We investigated how individual variation in social behaviour among group members interacts to affect social structure and development of reproductive skills. We randomly assigned juvenile male and juvenile and adult female cowbirds to four aviaries and observed patterns of singing and social assortment in each. Although social composition of each aviary was the same, juvenile males in one aviary engaged in more intra- and intersexual affiliation and singing interactions. We designed a series of rotations of individuals among the aviaries to determine which individual traits were responsible for the observed group differences. First, we rotated groups of three males from a less interactive aviary into a more interactive aviary, replacing interactive males. Within 4 days, the rotated males changed their behaviour to match the aviary into which they had been moved (i.e. interactive males became less interactive and vice versa). Next, we rotated juvenile females through the aviaries. After this rotation, the behaviour of the juvenile females remained the same, but the behaviour of the resident males changed, becoming like the males in the females' former aviaries (i.e. when juvenile females were moved from an interactive aviary into a noninteractive aviary, the males in the new aviary became more interactive and vice versa). Across the aviaries, the amount of female-male associations correlated positively with male-male competition. During the breeding season, males that had experienced more competition over the year received more copulations than males that had experienced little competition. Furthermore, more eggs were produced in aviaries containing competitive males than in aviaries containing less competitive males. Past work has shown that females can influence male vocal development; here we show that they can also influence male social development. This study tests the hypothesis that hens that are reared in aviaries but produce in furnished cages experience poorer welfare in production than hens reared in caged systems. This hypothesis is based on the suggestion that the spatial restriction associated with the transfer from aviaries to cages results in frustration or stress for the aviary reared birds. To assess the difference in welfare between aviary and cage reared hens in production, non-beak trimmed white leghorn birds from both rearing backgrounds were filmed at a commercial farm that used furnished cage housing. The videos were taken at 19 and 21 weeks of age, following the birds'' transition to the production environment at 16 weeks. Videos were analysed in terms of the performance of aversion-related behaviour in undisturbed birds, comfort behaviour in undisturbed birds, and alert behaviour directed to a novel object in the home cage. A decrease in the performance of the former behaviour and increase in the performance of the latter two behaviours indicates improved welfare. The results showed that aviary reared birds performed more alert behaviour near to the object than did cage reared birds at 19 but not at 21 weeks of age (P = 0.03). Blood glucose concentrations did not differ between the treatments (P>0.10). There was a significant difference in mortality between treatments (P = 0.000), with more death in aviary reared birds (5.52%) compared to cage birds (2.48%). The higher mortality of aviary-reared birds indicates a negative effect of aviary rearing on bird welfare, whereas the higher duration of alert behavior suggests a positive effect of aviary rearing.  相似文献

Experiments have shown that pigeons, Columba livia, are able to develop navigational abilities even if reared and kept confined in an aviary, provided that they are exposed to the natural winds. In contrast, pigeons reared in a wind-screened aviary do not learn to navigate. Pigeons kept confined in a screened aviary when young do not learn to navigate even if, once they become adult, the screens are removed and the birds are exposed to natural winds for a period sufficiently long for map learning. In all of these experiments, pigeons were kept confined until the day of test release. In the present study we found that pigeons reared in a wind-screened aviary developed navigational abilities if, once adult, they were allowed to perform spontaneous flights around the loft. Summary A pair of the Great Spotted Cuckoo exhibited reproductive behaviour during the years 1968–72. Until 1971 the female laid the eggs in nests of Magpies or Blackbirds which were placed in the aviary. Birds which could serve as hosts at these times were not in the aviary. The female Cuckoo visited the nests before laying an egg quite often and stayed at or in the nests for longer periods.1972 two Rollers were kept together with the Cuckoos and one Roller laid four eggs into a cave of a beech-stump. Now the female Cuckoo tried to deposit its eggs into the Roller's nest and was successful doing so several times. As soon as the female Cuckoo was ready to lay, the male Cuckoo diverted the Roller and so made it possible for the female to get into the Rollers nest. This study examined reactions to mirror-image stimulation in a wild- reared adult male monkey (Macaca tonkeana) which had spontaneously developed a form of tool-use, namely the use of plant stems to reach mucus inside the nose. Initial intense social responsiveness to the mirror was followed by habituation, although some social responding persisted. Mirror- induced social facilitation of drinking was demonstrated, the first record of such an effect in a nonhuman primate. Rather than enhancing the subject's tool-using activity, the presence of the mirror disrupted tool-use. Finally, an objective test for the presence of self-recognition failed to obtain any evidence of self-recognition in the subject, lending support to the view that the capacity for self-recognition may be lacking in monkeys.  相似文献

This communication presents and discusses the financial costs recorded by a small Brazilian aviary in which a few captive-bred wild bird species have been kept. The highest expenses were associated with the birds’ diet, accounting for at least 60% of total costs. Among insectivorous-frugivorous birds, this figure was 88%. The most expensive food item was live food. Although initial costs for enclosures may be considerable, their durability means expenditures can be spread over time, mitigating their impact. Approximately 30% of the total costs for keeping the largest species studied here were linked to a spacious outdoor planted aviary. Quail from this flock required additional sanitary expenditure (i.e. 14% of the total) for controlling a previous parasitic infection. Total annual maintenance costs amounted to USD 298.00, USD 211.00 and USD 116.00 for each Pekin robin (Leiothrix lutea Scopoli, 1786), Livingstone's turaco (Tauraco livingstonii Gray, 1864), and Valley quail (Callipepla californica Shaw, 1798), respectively.  相似文献

Sex steroid actions during early development appear to play a role in the development of sex differences in sexual partner preference (SPP, preference for males vs. females) in several species of mammals and in the socially monogamous pair bonding zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). Female finches treated with estrogen as nestlings exhibit varying degrees of masculinized SPP as adults, but only if they have been housed in all-female groups during the juvenile and young adult period, suggesting that the estrogen effect may involve social experience and possibly sexual imprinting. Because tactile contact is important for consolidation of imprinted preferences in this species, it was predicted that early estrogen treatment would alter preferences of females only if they were allowed to have tactile contact with other females. Subjects were injected with estradiol benzoate or with oil (normal controls) daily for the first 2 weeks post-hatching. At age 45 days, they were housed in a mixed sex aviary (normal controls), in an all-female aviary allowing tactile contact (group EB-TC), or in an all-female aviary with no tactile contact (group EB-NTC). At 100+ days, birds were given two-choice SPP tests followed by aviary tests of SPP. EB-TC females did not show the sex-typical preference for male stimuli, and differed significantly from the controls on several measures. EB-NTC females preferred males and never differed significantly from controls. These results show that tactile contact after age 45 days is essential for an EB effect on SPP, supporting the hypothesis that hormones and sexual imprinting together contribute to SPP.  相似文献

During a long-term study of chimpanzees in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon, tool-use to obtain insects or their products was observed four times and on 23 other occasions tools made and used by chimpanzees were recovered. Of 144 tools used to obtain insects, 142 were made from woody material. Tools varied in dimensions and in the degree of modification (bark stripping and fraying of ends) but those used to obtain different prey species were generally similar and resembled tools described from other chimpanzee populations in central Africa. Use of a leaf “sponge” to obtain water from a hole in the branch of a tree was observed once. Four tool-use patterns shown by other chimpanzee populations appeared to be absent at Lopé as no direct or indirect evidence of their existence was obtained in ten years.  相似文献

Calcium availability may limit the reproductive output of birds and snail shells are considered to be the main source of calcium in many passerine species. This study of collared (Ficedula albicollis) and pied (F. hypoleuca) flycatchers evaluates calcium intake of a natural diet in Central Europe, and sex differences in the utilization of experimentally supplemented sources of calcium during the entire breeding period in aviary birds. The study provides the first evidence that successful reproduction of these species depends on the availability of woodlice (Isopoda) and millipedes (Diplopoda). Each of these two components provided about 3 times more calcium than the snail shells contained in a natural nestling diet. The breeding performance of aviary birds was poor when only snail shells and the fragments of eggshells were provided in food, i.e., irregular laying, smaller clutches, eggshell defects (25 of 53 eggs), and eggs dried-up during incubation. In contrast, no defective eggshell or dried-up eggs were found and the overall breeding performance increased 2–3 times when woodlice were added to the food. Females increased their intake of woodlice during both the pre-laying and laying periods, and both sexes did so during the nestling period. Both sexes took more woodlice in the evening than in the morning, independent of the nesting stage. Intake by females was low until 4 days before laying the first egg, then increased to the highest level, dropping immediately after laying the last egg. Intake of woodlice by both sexes increased steadily from hatching until the nestling age of about 10–12 days decreasing thereafter, which corresponds with the period of rapid skeletal growth. Animals in captive or laboratory settings may outperform wild animals of the same species in both frequency and diversity of tool use, a phenomenon here termed ‘captivity bias’. Although speculative at this stage, a logical conclusion from this concept is that animals whose tool-use behaviour is observed solely under natural conditions may be judged cognitively or physically inferior than if they had also been tested or observed under controlled captive conditions. In turn, this situation creates a potential problem for studies of the behaviour of extinct members of the human family tree—the hominins—as hominin cognitive abilities are often judged on material evidence of tool-use behaviour left in the archaeological record. In this review, potential factors contributing to captivity bias in primates (including increased contact between individuals engaged in tool use, guidance or shaping of tool-use behaviour by other tool-users and increased free time and energy) are identified and assessed for their possible effects on the behaviour of the Late Pleistocene hominin Homo floresiensis. The captivity bias concept provides one way to uncouple hominin tool use from cognition, by considering hominins as subject to the same adaptive influences as other tool-using animals.  相似文献

The variety and complexity of human-made tools are unique in the animal kingdom. Research investigating why human tool use is special has focused on the role of social learning: while non-human great apes acquire tool-use behaviours mostly by individual (re-)inventions, modern humans use imitation and teaching to accumulate innovations over time. However, little is known about tool-use behaviours that humans can invent individually, i.e. without cultural knowledge. We presented 2- to 3.5-year-old children with 12 problem-solving tasks based on tool-use behaviours shown by great apes. Spontaneous tool use was observed in 11 tasks. Additionally, tasks which occurred more frequently in wild great apes were also solved more frequently by human children. Our results demonstrate great similarity in the spontaneous tool-use abilities of human children and great apes, indicating that the physical cognition underlying tool use shows large overlaps across the great ape species. This suggests that humans are neither born with special physical cognition skills, nor that these skills have degraded due to our species’ long reliance of social learning in the tool-use domain.  相似文献

Use of leaves or sticks for drinking water has only rarely been observed during long-term study of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) at Mahale. Recently, however, we observed 42 episodes of tool-use for drinking water (73 tools and two cases of using tool-sets) between 1999 and 2004. Interestingly, all of the performers were immature chimpanzees aged from 2 to 10 years. Immature chimpanzees sometimes observed the tool-using performance of others and subsequently reproduced the behavior, while adults usually paid no attention to the performance. This tool-use did not seem to occur out of necessity: (1) chimpanzees often used tools along streams where they could drink water without tools, (2) they used tools for drinking water from tree holes during the wet season when they could easily obtain water from many streams, and (3) the tool-using performance sometimes contained playful aspects. Between-site comparisons revealed that chimpanzees at drier habitats used tools for drinking water more frequently and in a more conventional manner. However, some variations could not be explained by ecological conditions. Such variations and the increase in this tool-use in recent years at Mahale strongly suggest that social learning plays an important role in the process of acquiring the behavior. We should note here that such behaviors that lack obvious benefits or necessity can be prevalent in a group.  相似文献

Females mated to attractive males are predicted to produce male-biasedbroods. Previous studies on zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata,in which colored leg rings were used to alter male attractiveness,support this hypothesis. However, because molecular sexing techniqueswere not available, it was not known when during developmentthis bias arose. Also, because both attractive (red-ringed)and unattractive (green-ringed) males were within the same aviary,assortative mating between treatments may have confounded theresults. Using two different experimental designs, we testedwhether the sex ratio of zebra finch eggs and chicks differedin response to paternal ring color whilst controlling for assortativemating between treatments. In the aviary experiment, birds couldinteract socially, but all males in an aviary had the same legring color. In the cage experiment, each female was randomlyassigned a red- or green-ringed mate, thus also eliminatingassortative mating within treatments. Offspring were sexed basedon plumage or using a molecular method. The sex ratio at layingdid not differ between treatments in either the aviary (n =313 eggs) or cage (n = 151 eggs) experiments, suggesting thatfemale zebra finches do not manipulate the primary sex ratioin response to their mate's ring color. However, in the cageexperiment we found greater male embryonic mortality in theattractive group, which resulted in a female-biased sex ratioat sexual maturity, that is, in the opposite direction to thatfound in previous studies. Possible explanations for the disparitybetween our results and those of previous studies are considered.  相似文献

L-gulono-γ-lactone oxidase (Gulo) catalyzes the last step of ascorbic acid biosynthesis, which occurs in the kidney of elasmobranchs. This study aimed to clone and sequence gulonolactone oxidase (gulo) from the kidney of the euryhaline freshwater stingray, Himantura signifer, and to determine the effects of acclimation from freshwater to brackish water (salinity 20) on its renal gulo mRNA expression and Gulo activity. We also examined the effects of brackish water acclimation on concentrations of ascorbate, dehydroascorbate and ascorbate + dehydroascorbate in the kidney, brain and gill. The complete cDNA coding sequence of gulo from the kidney of H. signifer contained 1323 bp coding for 440 amino acids. The expression of gulo was kidney-specific, and renal gulo expression decreased significantly by 67% and 50% in fish acclimated to brackish water for 1 day and 6 days, respectively. There was also a significant decrease in renal Gulo activity after 6 days of acclimation to brackish water. Hence, brackish water acclimation led to a decrease in the ascorbic acid synthetic capacity in the kidney of H. signifer. However, there were significant increases in concentrations of ascorbate and ascorbate + dehydroascorbate in the gills (after 1 or 6 days), and a significant increase in the concentration of ascorbate and a significant decrease in the concentration of dehydroascorbate in the brain (after 1 day) of fish acclimated to brackish water. Taken together, our results indicate that H. signifer might experience greater salinity-induced oxidative stress in freshwater than in brackish water, possibly related to its short history of freshwater invasion. These results also suggest for the first time a possible relationship between the successful invasion of the freshwater environment by some euryhaline marine elasmobranchs and the ability of these elasmobranchs to increase the capacity of ascorbic acid synthesis in response to hyposalinity stress.  相似文献

Multiple, action-based space representations are each based on the extent to which action is possible toward a specific sector of space, such as near/reachable and far/unreachable. Studies on tool-use revealed how the boundaries between these representations are dynamic. Space is not only multidimensional and dynamic, but it is also known for interacting with other dimensions of magnitude, such as time. However, whether time operates on similar action-driven multiple representations and whether it can be modulated by tool-use is yet unknown. To address these issues, healthy participants performed a time bisection task in two spatial positions (near and far space) before and after an active tool-use training, which consisted of performing goal-directed actions holding a tool with their right hand (Experiment 1). Before training, perceived stimuli duration was influenced by their spatial position defined by action. Hence, a dissociation emerged between near/reachable and far/unreachable space. Strikingly, this dissociation disappeared after the active tool-use training since temporal stimuli were now perceived as nearer. The remapping was not found when a passive tool-training was executed (Experiment 2) or when the active tool-training was performed with participants’ left hand (Experiment 3). Moreover, no time remapping was observed following an equivalent active hand-training but without a tool (Experiment 4). Taken together, our findings reveal that time processing is based on action-driven multiple representations. The dynamic nature of these representations is demonstrated by the remapping of time, which is action- and effector-dependent.  相似文献

The strength of the evidence for population-level handedness in the great apes is a topic of considerable debate, yet there have been few studies of handedness in orangutans. We conducted a study of manual lateralization in a captive group of eight orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) ranking the degrees of manual preference according to a defined framework. We analyzed five behavioral patterns: eat (one- and two-handed), make/modify tool, oral tool-use, and manual tool-use. Although some individuals showed significant manual preferences for one or more tasks, at the group-level both one-handed and two-handed eating, oral tool-use, and make/modify tool were ranked at level 1 (unlateralized). Manual tool-use was ranked at level 2, with four subjects demonstrating significant hand preferences, but no group-level bias to the right or left. Four subjects also showed hand specialization to the right or left across several tasks. These results are consistent with most previous studies of manual preference in orangutans. The emergence of manual lateralization in orangutans may relate to more complex manipulative tasks. We hypothesize that more challenging manual tasks elicit stronger hand preferences.  相似文献

Sequential tests in an open field (OF) and in an aviary were performed to study the exploration behavior of great tits, Parus major Each aviary of 2×2×2 m included a standard set of objects: trees, feeder, and shelters. Twenty-four aviaries included a single individual, and 49 aviaries included two heterosexual individuals. During the 15-min observation, a number of explored objects, the latent exploration period of each object (the time period from the start of observation to the first visit of each object), and the time period to the onset of feeding were recorded. The exploration rate of each individual was characterized by the sum of all latent periods (CLP). No association between the cumulative locomotor activities in OF and in an aviary was found. Probably, in the complex environment of an aviary, the frequency of directed actions increases, competing with the movement activity. Faster individuals in OF showed a shorter CLP; i.e., they were fast explorers. The exploration rate of a novel environment in the presence of socid partner was unrelated to exploration scores in OF. Interrelations of birds combined in an aviary were dependent on combinations of personality characteristics identified in OF.  相似文献

Humans are distinctive in their dependence upon products of culture for survival, products that have evolved cumulatively over generations such that many cannot now be created by a single individual. Why the cultural capacity of humans appears unrivalled in the animal kingdom is a topic of ongoing debate. Here we explore whether innovation and/or social learning propensities may constrain the ability of one of our closest living relatives, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), to master an extractive foraging and tool-use task designed to afford opportunities for cumulative culture to develop. We further explore the potential demographic characteristics associated with novel task solutions. Chimpanzees (N = 53) were inventive, flexibly exploring the novel task, albeit complex inventions were rare and shaped by prior individual experience with similar tool-use tasks. However, they displayed no evidence of cumulative cultural learning. Communities displayed richer behavioral repertoires and had greater task success than chimpanzees tested in an asocial control condition, but their solution complexity did not surpass what individuals invented. The lack of social transmission of complex and beneficial solutions in contexts like those we studied provides one explanation for the limited cumulative culture observed in this species.  相似文献

In an aviary experiment, we studied whether body size or habitatfamiliarity of field voles (Microtus agrestis) affected predationrisk by Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus). In the field, wecompared the body size of field voles snap-trapped in good (covered)and poor (open) habitats in 1992 and 1994 to determine whetherthere were habitat-related differences in the body size of voles.In the aviary, large individuals occupied the good habitat significantlymore than small individuals both in the control (owl not present)and experimental treatments (owl present). Furthermore, habitat-familiarvoles inhabited the good habitat more than habitat-unfamiliarvoles did when an owl was present Our field data were consistentwith our aviary data: larger field voles were more frequentlyfound in good habitats than in poor habitats. In the aviary,Tengmalm's owl predation risk was higher for small and habitat-unfamiliarvoles. This suggests that large field voles may have priorityto sheltered habitats. Furthermore, habitat familiarity mayplay a central role in avoiding risky habitats.  相似文献

Bird-pollinated plants typically have reddish flowers, but it is not clear whether this trait can be attributed to selection by birds. Here we experimentally test for the first time the foraging behaviour of sunbirds in relation to flower colour, using the Orange-breasted Sunbird Anthobaphes violacea (Nectariniidae) and the colour dimorphic Erica perspicua (Ericaceae). Pink and white flower morphotypes co-flower in intermixed populations and have similar nectar volumes and concentrations. Using floral arrays in a field aviary, we found that sunbirds preferred pink flowers; 95 % of their first choices were to pink inflorescences and they visited and probed more pink inflorescences and flowers, respectively. We also tested for flower constancy (the tendency to move between same colour rather than different colour morphotypes), but found no evidence for this in the sequence of their foraging choices, indicating that this mechanism did not maintain flower colour differences in sympatry. There was evidence for optimal foraging: 80 % of moves were to adjacent inflorescences. Unexpectedly, the preference for pink flowers observed in the aviary did not translate into a female fitness advantage for this morphotype in the field, since no difference is found in natural pollination rate, fruit or seed set. This may be because the minimization of flight distances between plants is the primary factor in sunbird foraging choices, overriding their colour preference. Antagonistic nectar robbers did not act as a selective force on the polymorphism, since nectar-robbing rates were equal between white and pink morphotypes in the field.  相似文献
