The most important parameters of the neuronal soma of neurons of the chicken nucleus isthmi have been analyzed, with photo and morphometric techniques, in order to quantify the morphological variations present during the first months of the life to determine if the developmental changes of both neuronal populations of the nucleus are similar or different. The study was carried out on neurons of the parvicellular part and magnocellular part of the Nucleus Isthmi in one day and four month-old chickens. The soma shape did not change during this time interval in parvicellular neurons. The magnocellular neurons became more fusiform. In-one-day old chickens, the section shapes of the neuronal soma and optical density, are similar in both the magnocellular and parvicellular parts of the nucleus. The area and the maximum and minimum diameters do not present significant differences between magnocellular and parvicellular neurons. In adults, the maximum diameter, neuronal area and optical density are higher in magnocellular neurons than in parvicellular neurons. In summary, magnocellular neurons of the nucleus Isthmi of adults are bigger, darker and more elongated than the ones that constitute the parvicellular territory. 相似文献

Responses of single units in the region of the nucleus isthmi were investigated in frogs immobilized with diplacin by means of extracellular capillary liquid microelectrodes. The neurons of this region were not spontaneously active and, after electrical stimulation of the contralateral optic nerve with a single pulse, they gave a single spike discharge with a minimal latent period of 20–110 msec. On increasing the strength of stimulation from threshold to maximal these latent periods were significantly reduced, indicating marked development of summation processes in the corresponding neuronal pathway. Only 14% of the neurons (7 of 57) discharged in response to stimuli exciting myelinated but not exciting unmyelinated optic fibers. All neurons were characterized by instability of the latent period of the evoked discharge; consequently, they were not excited antidromically. The possible functional role of the nucleus isthmi region in the Anura is discussed.A. N. Periodontal mechanosensitive (PM) units were recorded from the trigeminal spinal tract nucleus (Vst) of the cat. The Vst is divided into three subnuclei: oralis (Vo), interpolaris (Vi), and caudalis (Vc). The receptive fields of PM units in Vo and Vi were arranged in a dorsoventral sequence in the mandibular to maxillary divisions, and those in Vc were arranged in a mediolateral sequence. The majority of Vo units were single-tooth ones, whereas more than half the Vi units and all the Vc ones were multitooth units. The PM units in each subnucleus were predominantly responsive to canine tooth stimulation. Most of the PM units in Vo and Vi gave sustained responses to pressure applied to the tooth, were directionally selective, and were most actively excited by canine tooth stimulation in the caudomedial or rostrolateral direction. Vc units, however, were transient. The threshold intensity for firings by canine tooth stimulation was less than 0.05 N. These findings indicate that only the response properties of PM units in the rostral part of Vst resemble those of the trigeminal main sensory nucleus neurons and primary afferent nerves. 相似文献

The response of caudate nucleus neurons to presentation of photic stimuli located at varying distances from the fovea centralis was investigated in awake cats. Stimulation of different sites on the visual field below the fovea produced dissimilar reactions in 25 of the 35 (or 71%) of these neurons responding to photic stimulation. This divergence of response indicates that in 6 of these cells (or 17%) the receptive fields in the test area of the visual field bordered on the central area of the latter and 6 neurons (17%) showed reduced sensitivity to the effects of stimuli nearer to the periphery than to the center of the visual field, while 13 units (37%) were receiving qualitatively different information from various sites on the field of vision. On the basis of our findings we deduced that caudate nucleus neurons are involved in the analysis of visual sensory signals.A. A. The nucleus isthmi (NI) is the primary relay for the frog's ipsilateral visuotectal projection. Using electrophysiological methods, ipsilateral visuotectal activity has been recorded in thyroxine-treated, postmetamorphic axolotls but not in larval axolotls. In order to determine whether changes in isthmotectal projections are responsible for this change in electrophysiological responsiveness, we have investigated the connections between the tectum and the NI using horseradish peroxidase. Our results indicate that the axolotl's isthmotectal pathways are strikingly similar to those of the frog NI, and that the NI sends bilateral projections to the tecta in both larval and thyroxine-treated, postmetamorphic axolotls. Thus, the anatomical connections underlying the ipsilateral visuotectal projection are present during larval stages, despite the lack of electrophysiological evidence for the larval ipsilateral visuotectal projection. We hypothesize that thyroxine-induced metamorphosis produces changes in the terminal arborizations of the crossed isthmotectal projection which allow them to be detected by presynaptic electrophysiological techniques. 相似文献

The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) contains a heterogeneous population of neurons, some of which are temperature sensitive in their firing rate activity. Neuronal thermosensitivity may provide cues that synchronize the circadian clock. In addition, through synaptic inhibition on nearby cells, thermosensitive neurons may provide temperature compensation to other SCN neurons, enabling postsynaptic neurons to maintain a constant firing rate despite changes in temperature. To identify mechanisms of neuronal thermosensitivity, whole cell patch recordings monitored resting and transient potentials of SCN neurons in rat hypothalamic tissue slices during changes in temperature. Firing rate temperature sensitivity is not due to thermally dependent changes in the resting membrane potential, action potential threshold, or amplitude of the fast afterhyperpolarizing potential (AHP). The primary mechanism of neuronal thermosensitivity resides in the depolarizing prepotential, which is the slow depolarization that occurs prior to the membrane potential reaching threshold. In thermosensitive neurons, warming increases the prepotential's rate of depolarization, such that threshold is reached sooner. This shortens the interspike interval and increases the firing rate. In some SCN neurons, the slow component of the AHP provides an additional mechanism for thermosensitivity. In these neurons, warming causes the slow AHP to begin at a more depolarized level, and this, in turn, shortens the interspike interval to increase firing rate. 相似文献

In acute experiments on immobilized cats 13 functional characteristics of 96 visual cortex neurons were investigated. By means of regression, cluster, and multivariate analyses, these could be divided into two subgroups with varying degrees of correlatedness. Cells of the first subgroup were more frequently characterized by their relatively central location in the visual receptive field, while those of the second subgroup were more often found at the periphery. A significant correlation was found between 11 of the properties investigated. In each subgroup, cells with more centrally localized small receptive fields had, in comparison with neurons of the peripheral visual projection, short latent periods, lower thresholds, phasic response, and brief summation; their responses varied widely in intensity, and they had greater differential sensitivity, and were distinguished by high-frequency discharges. Significant correlation coefficients between the factors studied fluctuated between 0.21 and 0.99; moreover, there were almost twice as many significant relationships in the first subgroup of neurons as in the second. The possible mechanisms of correlations between the properties of the visual cortex neurons are discussed, as well as the reasons why they differ in cells of the two subgroups, the cortex, and the lateral geniculate body.Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. We used controlled whisker deflections to examine the response properties of 208 primary afferent neurons in the trigeminal ganglion of adult mice. Proportions of rapidly adapting (RA, 47%) and slowly adapting (SA, 53%) neurons were equivalent, and most cells had low or no spontaneous activity. We quantified angular tuning and sensitivity to deflection amplitude and velocity. Both RA and SA units fired more frequently to larger deflections and faster deflections, but RA units were more sensitive to differences in velocity whereas SA units were more sensitive to deflection amplitudes. Almost all neurons were tuned for deflection angle, and the average response to the maximally effective direction was more than fourfold greater than the average response in the opposite direction; SA units were more tuned than RA units. Responses of primary afferent whisker-responsive neurons are qualitatively similar to those of the rat. However, average firing rates of both RA and SA neurons in the mouse are less sensitive to differences in deflection velocity, and RA units, unlike those in the rat, display amplitude sensitivity. Subtle observed differences between mice and rats may reflect greater mechanical compliance in mice of the whisker hairs and of the tissue in which they are embedded. 相似文献

In experiments on rat brain slices, we carried out intracellular recording from neurons of the red nucleus (RN). Passive electrical properties of these neurons (input resistance, membrane time constant) were evaluated. We detected voltage-dependent rebound depolarization and time dependent inward rectification when passing hyperpolarizing pulses of current through the cell. Injections of depolarizing currents caused rhythmical firing of the neurons; the frequency of these firings depends upon the strength of injected current. Rhythmical firings were also characterized by rapid frequency adaptation when currents of different frequency were injected. Stimulation of regions of slices presumably corresponding to the decussion of the brachium conjunctivum mainly evoked EPSPs with a "fast" rise time in RN neurons. This suggests activation of synaptic input from the cerebellar nucleus interpositus. Stimulation of this same region sometimes evoked EPSP-IPSP mixtures and "pure" IPSPs in RN neurons.L. A. Summary Tongue-projecting plethodontid salamanders have massive direct ipsilateral retinal afferents to the tectum opticum as well as a large and well developed nucleus isthmi. Retrograde staining revealed two subnuclei: A ventral one projecting to the contralateral tectal hemisphere and a dorsal one projecting back to the ipsilateral side. The isthmic nuclei show a retinotopic organization, which is in register with that of the tectum. Electrophysiological recordings from nucleus-isthmi neurons revealed response properties that are very similar to those found in tectal neurons. Thus, there is no substantial processing of tectal neural activity in the nucleus isthmi. Measurements of peak latencies after electrical and light stimulation suggest the continuous coexistence of 4 representations of the visual field in the tectum mediated by (1) the contralateral and (2) the ipsilateral direct retinal afferents, (3) the uncrossed and (4) the crossed isthmo-tectal projection. (1) and (2) originate at the same moment in the retina and arrive simultaneously in the tectum. It is assumed that in plethodontid salamanders with massive ipsilateral retino-tectal projections depth perception based on disparity cues is achieved by comparison of these images.Representations mediated by (3) and (4) arriving in the tectum at the same time as (1) and (2) originate 10–30 ms earlier in the retina. It is hypothesized that these time differences between (1)/(2) and (3)/(4) are used to calculate three-dimensional trajectories of fast-moving prey objects.Abbreviations

Responses of neurons in the superior colliculi and visual cortex of rabbits to a black and white boundary moving in different directions were investigated. Neurons responding clearly to presentation of the black and white boundary moving in one direction (movement in the opposite direction led to inhibition of spontaneous activity) and neurons giving well-defined maximal responses to movement of this boundary in 2 or 3 directions were found in the superior colliculi. Neurons with a marked maximal response to the stimulus moving in 1 or 2 directions were found in the visual cortex. Nembutal has a powerful effect on the quantitative detector properties of visual cortical neurons and sometimes may completely inhibit unit activity.V. Kapsukas Vilnius State University. A model of the electrophysiological properties of rodent nucleus reticularis thalami (NRT) neurons of the dorsal lateral thalamus was developed using Hodgkin-Huxley style equations. The model incorporated voltage-dependent rate constants and kinetics obtained from recent voltage-clamp experiments in vitro. The intrinsic electroresponsivity of the model cell was found to be similar to several empirical observations. Three distinct modes of oscillatory activity were identified: 1) a pattern of slow rhythmic burst firing (0.5-7 Hz) usually associated with membrane potentials negative to approximately -70 mV which resulted from the interplay of ITs and IK(Ca); 2) at membrane potentials from approximately -69 to -62 mV, rhythmic burst firing in the spindle frequency range (7-12 Hz) developed and was immediately followed by a tonic tail of single spike firing after several bursts. The initial bursting rhythm resulted from the interaction of ITs and IK(Ca), with a slow after-depolarization due to ICAN which mediated the later tonic firing; 3) with further depolarization of the membrane potential positive to approximately -61 mV, sustained tonic firing appeared in the 10-200-Hz frequency range depending on the amplitude of the injected current. The frequency of this firing was also dependent on the maximum conductance of the leak current, IK(leak), and an interaction between the fast currents involved in generating action potentials, INa(fast) and IK(DR), and the persistent Na+ current, INa(P). Transitions between different firing modes were identified and studied parametrically. 相似文献

Aseptic inflammation of tissues surrounding large meningeal blood vessels, e.g. the superior sagittal sinus, underlies pathogenesis of migraine. This inflammation develops due to antidromic activation of sensory trigeminal nerve endings and is followed by changes in responses of the spinal nucleus of the trigeminal nerve neurons to electrical stimulation of the superior sagittal sinus. However, characteristics of these reactions are still unclear. In experiments ou urethane-anesthetized rats, responses of 387 neurons of the spinal nucleus of the trigeminal nerve to electrical stimulation of the superior sagittal sinus, were recorded. It was tial discharge with the latency 7 to 19 ms (11.4 +/- 0.17 ms) and a subsequent long-lasting discharge with the latency 20 to 50 ms (34.2 +/- 0.8 ms). It is presumed that the first phase reflects orthodromic activation of prevascular A delta and C-fibers of the trigeminal nerve while the second phase is connected with activation of meningeal C-fibers which have low conduction velocity, and/or with a secondary activation of perivascular sensory endings of trigeminal nerve by releasing algogenic and vasoactive substances. These changes could be used as an indicator of efficacy of some antimigraine substances in animal experiments. 相似文献

The crystalline-like structure of the optic lobes of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has made them a model system for the study of neuronal cell-fate determination, axonal path finding, and target selection. For functional studies, however, the small size of the constituting visual interneurons has so far presented a formidable barrier. We have overcome this problem by establishing in vivo whole-cell recordings from genetically targeted visual interneurons of Drosophila. Here, we describe the response properties of six motion-sensitive large-field neurons in the lobula plate that form a network consisting of individually identifiable, directionally selective cells most sensitive to vertical image motion (VS cells). Individual VS cell responses to visual motion stimuli exhibit all the characteristics that are indicative of presynaptic input from elementary motion detectors of the correlation type. Different VS cells possess distinct receptive fields that are arranged sequentially along the eye's azimuth, corresponding to their characteristic cellular morphology and position within the retinotopically organized lobula plate. In addition, lateral connections between individual VS cells cause strongly overlapping receptive fields that are wider than expected from their dendritic input. Our results suggest that motion vision in different dipteran fly species is accomplished in similar circuitries and according to common algorithmic rules. The underlying neural mechanisms of population coding within the VS cell network and of elementary motion detection, respectively, can now be analyzed by the combination of electrophysiology and genetic intervention in Drosophila. 相似文献

Nucleus isthmi (NI) is a mesencephalic structure of the amphibian brain that has been reported to participate in CO(2) chemoreception and in the ventilatory response to hypoxia. However, no information exists about the modulators and/or mediators involved. In the present study, we assessed the participation of nitric oxide (NO) in the hypoxic and hypercarbic drive to breathing, specifically in the NI. We compared the ventilatory and cardiovascular responses with hypoxia and hypercarbia after microinjecting 100 nmol/0.5 microliter of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; an NO synthase blocker) into the NI of toads (Bufo paracnemis). L-NAME had no effect under resting conditions. Hypoxia elicited an increase in ventilation in control and vehicle toads by elevating tidal volume (V(T)). Hypercarbia caused hyperventilation in all groups due to an increase in both V(T) and frequency. The microinjection of L-NAME into the NI elicited an increase in ventilatory response to hypoxia and hypercarbia due to a higher V(T.) We conclude that NO in the NI has an inhibitory effect when the respiratory drive is high, acting on V(T). 相似文献

Summary For echolocation, the mustached bat,Pteronotus parnellii rubiginosus, emits orientation sounds (pulses) and listens to echoes. Each pulse is made up of 8 components, of which 4 are constant frequencies (CF1–4) and 4 are frequency-modulated (FM1–4). Target-range information, conveyed by the time delay of the echo FM from the pulse FM, is processed in this species by specialized neurons in a part of the auditory cortex known as the FM-FM area. These cortical neurons are responsive to pulse-echo pairs at specific echo delays (Fig. 1). The essential components in the sound pair include the pulse FM1 followed by an echo FMn (n=2, 3 or 4). Downward sweeping FM1-FMn sounds that are similar to those the animal naturally hears during echolocation are the most effective in evoking facilitative responses. Most FM-FM neurons, however, still exhibit facilitative responses to stimulus pairs consisting of upward sweeping FM sounds and/or pure tones at frequencies found in FM sweeps (Figs. 2 and 3). The magnitude of facilitation is altered by changes in echo rather than pulse amplitude (Figs. 5 and 6). Neurons characterized by shorter best delays (or echoes from closer targets) do not require larger best echo amplitudes for facilitation.Abbreviations
