Variation in fruit production and pre-dispersal seed predation by Argyresthia conjugella was studied in␣four populations of Sorbus aucuparia in northern Sweden.␣The number of infructescences, fruits per infructescence, consumed seeds and developed unattacked seeds per fruit were scored in marked trees from 1984 to 1990. The results showed that the number of fruits produced in each population determined the number of seed predators occurring in the host population, as the yearly number of seed predators was significantly and positively correlated with yearly number of fruits, in all but one population. The seed predators showed a delay in response to variation in number of fruits produced. This lag in response resulted in a large proportion of fruits being attacked and seeds consumed in a bad fruiting year that followed a good fruiting year, and vice versa. The proportion of fruits attacked and seeds consumed was largest in the population showing the greatest between-year variation in fruit production and lowest in the population showing the lowest between-year variation in fruit production. Furthermore, the individuals within the former population were synchronised, while they were not in the latter population. These results contradict one of the possible explanations of mast-seeding, where large synchronised between-year variation is supposed to reduce pre-dispersal seed predation. Instead, differences in attraction of the seed predator to differences in fruit crop size could explain the observed difference in seed predation between the two populations with opposite fruiting patterns. Within each population, irrespective of year, the proportion of fruits attacked and seeds consumed was independent of a tree's fruiting display. Therefore, trees with high fruit production, despite harbouring the largest number of seed predators, produced the largest number of developed seeds in absolute numbers, compared to trees that produced few fruits. The life-history characteristics of Cardamine leucantha (Tausch) O. E. Schulz (Brassicaceae) are described. The species is an herbaceous perennial that favors open but relatively moist habitats. It is distributed from Kyushu to Hokkaido in Japan but also occurs in Korea, Mongolia, China and the Russian Far East. In southwestern Japan, shoots start sprouting from mid- to late April, reaching approximately 30–70 cm in height, with 5–10 compound leaves. Ramets simultaneously produce one or more stoloniferous rhizomes that elongate until new ramets are formed at the tips. Cardamine leucantha has a pseudo-annual life cycle, in which mother ramets wither at the end of each season and only daughter ramets appear aboveground in the next year. As a result, ramet positions change annually. In a study population, the number of flowers averaged 23.9 ± 21.0 per ramet and fruit set was 44.2 ± 24.8% (10.4 ± 10.1 fruits per ramet). Ramets produced 3.8 ± 2.3 rhizomes that were 22.0 ± 15.6 cm long. The species sometimes forms large populations. A single genet develops into a group of disconnected ramets spreading via clonal growth. Reproductive characteristics (e.g., fruit set and numbers of flowers and rhizomes) vary among populations, resulting in interpopulation differences in genet structure. Because the reference genome became available recently, established molecular tools will be applied effectively for the investigations of C. leucantha as a model clonal plant.  相似文献

A factorial design of three densities of siblings at three local distances from seed parents was employed to distinguish effects of density from effects of dispersal distance on lifespan and fruit production of Cakile edentula var. lacustris, a plant with heteromorphic seeds. The segmented fruits produce two seed types: proximal and distal, with distal seeds having greater mass and greater dispersibility. Effects of longer distances (0.5 km and 30 km) on lifespan and fruit production were investigated using plants at low density. The prediction was tested that the greater seed mass of distal seeds increases fitness when seeds are dispersed into sites of unknown quality away from the home site or when seeds are dispersed to low density. High density caused earlier mortality and lower probability of reproduction. Distance from the maternal plant did not influence lifespan or reproduction at distances of 15 m or less, but lifespan was longer 0.5 km from the home site. No interaction was detected between the effects of density and distance on either lifespan or total fitness. Environmental conditions that influence fitness did not vary as a function of dispersal distance in this system, and favorable conditions at the home site did not persist between generations. Therefore, selection on dispersion patterns in natural conditions is likely to be through effects of density rather than dispersal distance. Proximal seeds had greater reproduction than distal seeds at the home site, and distal seeds had greater reproduction at the more distant sites (but not the most distant site), as expected, but these performance differences could not be attributed to differences in mass between the two seed types. Reduced seed mass was favored at the most distant site, but larger seed mass was favored most strongly at low density. Seeds that are dispersed to low density are larger, suggesting that although kin selection may limit the effectiveness of individual selection to increase seed mass under conditions of sibling competition, density-dependent individual selection on seed mass, rather than distant-dependent selection, also contributes to the observed associations among seed type, seed mass and dispersal ability. Sources of variation in floral nectar production were investigated in a natural population of Epilobium canum (Onagraceae), a hummingbird-pollinated herbaceous shrub. Field measurements showed significant phenotypic variation among plants in floral nectar production rates. Average variance among flowers within plants was approximately one-third to one-half as great as variance among plants, with coefficients of variation among flowers ranging from 6.5% to 116.7%. A greenhouse experiment using clonally propagated ramets from field plants showed significant genetic variation for nectar production rates; broad sense heritability was estimated to have a maximum value of 0.64. In the greenhouse, plants grown under low water or low light conditions produced approximately 25% less nectar on average than those grown under control conditions. However, significant genotype-environment interactions indicated that genets differed in their responses to the changes in conditions. Rank correlations for genet mean nectar production rates across environmental conditions were low, and in two out of three comparisons were not different from zero. It is concluded that although the opportunity for natural selection on nectar production rates exits in this population, the response to selection will likely be slow, and the opportunity for selection of a narrow-optimum nectar production phenotype may be limited. The post-dispersal fate of seeds and fruit (diaspores) of three vertebrate-dispersed trees, Crataegus monogyna, Prunus mahaleb and Taxus baccata, was studied in the Andalusian highlands, south-eastern Spain. Exclosures were used to quantify separately the impact of vertebrates and invertebrates on seed removal in relation to diaspore density and microhabitat. The three plant species showed marked differences in the percentage of diaspores removed, ranging from only 5% for C. monogyna to 87% for T. baccata. Although chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs) fed on diaspores, rodents (Apodemus sylvaticus) were the main vertebrate removers of seed and fruit. Two species of ant (Cataglyphis velox and Aphaenogaster iberica) were the only invertebrates observed to remove diaspores. However, the impact of ants was strongly seasonal and they only removed P. mahaleb fruit to any significant extent. While removal of seed by rodents was equivalent to predation, ants were responsible for secondary dispersal. However, their role was limited to infrequent, small-scale redistribution of fruit in the vicinity of parent trees. Rodents and ants differed in their use of different microhabitats. Rodents foraged mostly beneath trees and low shrubs and avoided open areas while the reverse was true of ants. Thus, patterns of post-dispersal seed removal will be contigent on the relative abundance and distribution of ants and rodents. Studies which neglect to quantify separately the impacts of these two guilds of seed removers may fail to elucidate the mechanisms underlying patterns of post-dispersal seed removal. The coincidence of both increased seed deposition by the main avian dispersers (Turdus spp.) and increased seed predation with increasing vegetation height suggested that selection pressures other than post-dispersal seed predation shape the spatial pattern of seed dispersal. Rather than providing a means of escaping post-dispersal seed predators, dispersal appears to direct seeds to microhabitats most suitable for seedling survival. Nevertheless, the reliance of most vertebrate-dispersed trees on regeneration by seed and the absence of persistent soil seed banks imply that post-dispersal seed predators may exert a strong influence on the demography of the plants whose seeds they consume. Even where microsites are limited, the coincidence of the most suitable microhabitats for seedling establishment with those where seed predation is highest provide a means by which selective seed predators can influence community composition. Large floral displays should theoretically provide advantages to plants through increased pollinator visitation and resulting fruit and seed set. However empirical tests of the response of pollinators to floral display size have been limited by a lack of direct experimentation, and the results of such studies have been equivocal. In addition, other selective agents such as pre-dispersal seed predators might modulate effects of floral display on pollination. By artificially altering flower number, we examined the direct effects of floral display in the monocarpic herb, Ipomopsis aggregata (Polemoniaceae), on visitation rates by broad-tailed and rufous hummingbird pollinators, as well destruction of fruits by a pre-dispersal seed predator (Hylemya: Anthomyiidae). In addition, we quantified the ultimate effects of flower number on female reproductive success. Plants with larger floral displays were most likely to be visited first in any given foraging bout (P < 0.01). As expected, plants with more flowers received more total flower visits. However, we found no gain in the proportion of flowers visited for many- versus few-flowered plants, or the total number of approaches/hour. In fact, a significantly greater percentage of flowers were visited on few-flowered plants. Plants did not compensate for our reduction in flowers by increasing investment in the number or proportion of flowers that set fruit, the number of seeds/fruit, or seed weight. Pre-dispersal seed predation was greater for many- than for few-flowered plants (P < 0.001), but this did not offset the potential fitness gains of producing large displays. Our data support the hypothesis that large floral displays function primarily in long-distance attraction of pollinators, and enhance maternal success.  We conducted an experiment in a natural population of Alstroemeria aurea, a clonal perennial, to determine (1) if reproduction was resource limited, and (2) if fruits would be selectively filled based on differences in pollination intensity when pollen loads were adequate for full seed set. Under these conditions, differences in pollination intensity are unlikely to affect seed number, but could affect seed quality, providing an interesting test of the gametophytic competition hypothesis. To test for resource limitation, percent fruit maturation, number of seeds per fruit and average seed weight were compared to paired controls for ramets in which all but one fruit was removed. To test the effect of pollination intensity on selective resource allocation, three types of pollination treatments were performed: (1) all flowers of the single inflorescence received a low pollen load, (2) all flowers received a high pollen load, (3) alternate flowers of the inflorescence received either a high or a low pollen load. We determined the percentage of fruit that reached maturity, counted the number of seeds and ovules and calculated the average seed weight for all capsules in each treatment. Resources appeared to limit reproduction in this population since seed number and weight were significantly higher than in controls when competing capsules were removed. At the whole ramet level, a four fold difference in pollen loads had no significant effect on any of the parameters measured. However, when pollination intensity varied within an inflorescence, the number of seeds per fruit increased by about 10% in flowers that received the higher pollen load. We observed the same trend in each of 2 years, but the increase was significant in only 1 year. The differences, although not great, were only slightly smaller than when all competing fruits were removed, and were consistent with selective resource allocation based on pollination intensity independent of seed set. Understory herbs are an essential part of tropical rain forests, but little is known about factors limiting their reproduction. Many of these herbs are clonal, patchily distributed, and produce large floral displays of nectar‐rich 1‐d flowers to attract hummingbird pollinators that may transport pollen over long distances. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of clonality, cross‐proximity, and patchy distribution on the reproduction of the hummingbird‐pollinated Amazonian herb Heliconia metallica. We experimentally pollinated flowers within populations with self‐pollen and with pollen of different diversity, crossed flowers between populations, and added supplemental pollen to ramets growing solitarily or in conspecific patches. Only flowers pollinated early in the morning produced seeds. Selfed flowers produced seeds, but seed number and mass were strongly reduced, suggesting partial sterility and inbreeding depression after selfing. Because of pollen competition, flowers produced more seeds after crosses with several than with single donor plants. Crosses between populations mostly resulted in lower seed production than those within populations, suggesting outbreeding depression. Ramets in patches produced fewer seeds than solitary ramets and were more pollen‐limited, possibly due to geitonogamy and biparental inbreeding in patches. We conclude that high rates of geitonogamy due to clonality and pollen limitation due to the short receptivity of flowers and patchy distribution constrain the reproduction of this clonal herb. Even in unfragmented rain forests with highly mobile pollinators, outbreeding depression may be a widespread phenomenon in plant reproduction.  相似文献

We used spot checks of stigmatic pollen deposition and hand-pollination experiments to test whether fruit production in Cape wildflower populations is limited by pollen availability. Natural levels of stigmatic pollen deposition were very low (median = 30.0% of flowers) in populations of 33 orchid species. We found similarly low levels of fruit set (median = 32% of flowers per plant) in six Orchidaceae and four Amaryllidaceae species. Experimental hand pollination at the whole plant level caused significant increases in fruit production in 11 of the 12 study populations. Background and Aims

Rubus chamaemorus (cloudberry) is a herbaceous clonal peatland plant that produces an extensive underground rhizome system with distant ramets. Most of these ramets are non-floral. The main objectives of this study were to determine: (a) if plant growth was source limited in cloudberry; (b) if the non-floral ramets translocated carbon (C) to the fruit; and (c) if there was competition between fruit, leaves and rhizomes for C during fruit development.

Methods

Floral and non-floral ramet activities were monitored during the period of flower and fruit development using three approaches: gas exchange measurements, 14CO2 labelling and dry mass accumulation in the different organs. Source and sink activity were manipulated by eliminating leaves or flowers or by reducing rhizome length.

Key Results

Photosynthetic rates were lower in floral than in deflowered ramets. Autoradiographs and 14C labelling data clearly indicated that fruit is a very strong sink for the floral ramet, whereas non-floral ramets translocated C toward the rhizome but not toward floral ramets. Nevertheless, rhizomes received some C from the floral ramet throughout the fruiting period. Ramets with shorter rhizomes produced smaller leaves and smaller fruits, and defoliated ramets produced very small fruits.

Conclusions

Plant growth appears to be source-limited in cloudberry since a reduction in sink strength did not induce a reduction in photosynthetic activity. Non-floral ramets did not participate directly to fruit development. Developing leaves appear to compete with the developing fruit but the intensity of this competition could vary with the specific timing of the two organs. The rhizome appears to act both as a source but also potentially as a sink during fruit development. Fruits formed after different pollination regimes (flowers hand pollinated, unpollinated, and open pollinated) and the seeds obtained were characterized in the wild chilli pepper Capsicum flexuosum Sendtn. Pollen tube development in vivo and ovary growth were also analyzed. Seedless fruits and empty seeds were abundant among the fruits from hand pollinated and open pollinated flowers, while no more than one seed with embryo was found in a low percentage of fruits from such pollination treatments. Parthenocarpic fruits were formed from unpollinated flowers. Pollen tube growth was arrested in the upper third of the style for almost all pollen tubes except for a single one that may continue elongating occasionally. The ovary size increased continuously after pollination, even without fertilization. The sum of the evidence registered may help to explain the low number of seeds with embryo harvested, the abundance of seedless fruits formed from pollinated flowers (possibly parthenocarpic), and the high rate of parthenocarpic fruits formed from unpollinated flowers.  相似文献

Background matching might lower the risk of seeds being eaten by seed predators that search visually. In aviary experiments, we analyzed the selection of diff erent-colored seeds by ground-feeding finches (Fringillacoelebs and F.montifringilla) against four naturally occurring forest soil substrates. The substrates were fresh burn (black), 6-year-old burn (brown), mineral soil (pale yellow) and Pleuroziumschreberi feather moss (green). We used color-sorted seeds of Pinussylvestris, a species with a large natural variation in seed color, ranging from pale yellow to black. Although seeds were scattered on the substrates at a density of only 91 seeds m−2, birds removed seeds effectively. Both bird species found more pale than dark seeds on the fresh burn substrate. F. montifringilla also recovered more pale than dark seeds on the old burn, and more dark than pale seeds on mineral soil. In moss, the birds found very few seeds compared to the other substrates, and there was no color discrimination. P.sylvestris is frequently regenerating after fire, suggesting that dark seeds would be favored under selection from visually searching predators. Fire-adapted conifers with serotinous cones, e.g., Pinuscontorta ssp. latifolia, which spread their seeds primarily on freshly burnt surfaces, produce uniformly black or dark brown seeds. However, regeneration of the non-serotinous P.sylvestris is often extended for several years after a fire, during which substrate color and structure change. This may have helped to maintain variation in seed color. When regeneration of a plant species occurs on a substrate of uniform color, we believe that selection by visually searching seed predators will result in the evolution of cryptic seed color. Recently, considerable attention has been paid to the invasion of the clonal plant Spartina alterniflora into coastal wetlands at lower elevations. In this experiment, we tested whether clonal integration improved flood tolerance in S. alterniflora daughter ramets. Daughter ramets at two growth stages (young and old ramets) were flooded to water levels of 0, 9 and 18 cm above the soil surface, and the rhizomes between mother and daughter ramets were either severed or left intact. Biomasses of connected ramets grown in controls or in shallow and deep water treatments were 119%, 108% and 149% higher in the old ramet group than those of severed ramets, respectively, whereas they were 3.0, 3.3 and 11.2 times higher in the young ramet group, respectively. At the end of the experimental period, the shoot height, connected with young ramets, in shallow and deep water treatments increased by 19% and 26%, respectively, over that in the control treatments, whereas the old ramets increased by 11% and 39%, respectively. In contrast, the shoot height of the severed young ramets was 27% and 26% lower in shallow and deep water treatments than in the control treatment, respectively. However, the shoot height of the severed old ramets remained constant with increasing water depth. We conclude that clonal integration enhances the flood tolerance of S. alterniflora daughter ramets, and the trait of clonal integration plays more important roles in severe flooding stress conditions and at early growth stages.  相似文献

Summary Initial seed set and fruit set were pollen-limited in a Costa Rican population of Passiflora vitifolia, a self-incompatible species with 200–350 ovules per flower. Pollination intensity was measured by counting the number of allogamous pollen grains on stigmas of the large one-day flowers. Hand-pollinations demonstrated that 25–50 pollen grains are required for fruit set, and >450 are needed for maximum seed set, with a pollen:seed ratio of about 1.6:1.0. Hummingbirds (Phaethornis superciliosus) delivered sufficient allogamous pollen for maximum seed set to only 28% of the flowers examined. Naturally pollinated flowers yielded fewer fruits and fewer seeds per fruit than those pollinated by hand. Most pollen transferred by humming-birds was self-incompatible; emasculated flowers yielded higher seed set than flowers with intact anthers. Visitation rates did not provide a good index of effective pollination.There were significant differences in ovule number, maximum seed set, and maximum per cent seed set among individual vines. More than half of an individual's flowers failed to set fruit, whether pollinated by birds or by hand. In this population, maximum reproductive potential may be limited by maternal resources for fruit development, but seed set varies with pollination intensity. Pollen-limited seed set may be a disadvantage of self-incompatibility, especially in species with many-seeded fruits.  相似文献

Clonal structure in clonal plants can affect sexual reproduction. Individual ramets can decrease reproduction if their neighbors are ramets of the same genet due to inbreeding depression or self-incompatibility. We assessed ramet reproductive success in the partial self-incompatible Ferocactus robustus (Cactaceae) as a function of floral display size in focal ramets and floral display size and clonal structure of their reproductive neighborhoods. Ramets were labeled, sized in number of stems, mapped and genetically identified through RAPD markers in one population. A pollen dispersal area of 15-m radius was established for each ramet to determine the clonal diversity in the neighborhoods. Flower production and fruit set were counted on a monthly basis during one reproductive season as a surrogate of ramet fitness. We expected a decrease in individual ramet reproductive success as a function of the number of reproductive ramets of the same genet in the neighborhood. A total of 272 sampled ramets revealed 116 multilocus genotypes, showing high clonal diversity in the population (G/N = 0.43, D = 0.98). Clonal diversity of neighborhoods ranged from 0.06 to 1 and fruit set varied from 0 to 76.9%. Individual ramet reproductive success was influenced by (1) mate availability, (2) floral display size of a genet within the reproductive neighborhood, and (3) the proportion of distinguishable genotypes. Floral display size of genets and ramets coupled with the genetic diversity within the reproductive neighborhood determines the low sexual reproduction in F. robustus.  相似文献

The mormyrid fish Pollimyrus adspersus has auditory specializations for sound pressure detection and uses acoustic displays in its natural social behavior. In this paper it is shown that auditory neurons in the mesencephalon (torus semicircularis) are activated selectively by temporal features of complex sounds. Single neurons were recorded while presenting sounds to fish underwater. The stimuli were acoustic click trains, 400 ms in duration, and were synthesized with differing inter-click-intervals (ICIs). The natural sounds of this species are composed similarly and the range of ICIs synthesized overlapped with the natural range (5–40 ms). One-third of the neurons studied were strongly selective for a narrow range of ICIs, increasing spike rate by ten fold or more at the best ICI compared to the minimum response observed. The best ICI for interval selective neurons remained stable when the sound pressure of the stimulus was changed. Neurons that were selective gave phasic responses to tone bursts, and most had non-monotonic rate level functions. The origin of interval selectivity is discussed and a time-based computational mechanism is proposed. Accepted: 20 December 1996  相似文献

Seedlings suffer high mortality in most plant populations, with both competition and herbivory proposed as being important mechanisms causing seedling death. The relative strength of these factors, however, is often unknown. Here I ask how interspecific competition for light and insect herbivory jointly affect seedling survival of bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus), a native shrub common to coastal California. Bush lupine seedlings germinate in grasslands during winter, and throughout spring potentially compete for light with surrounding fast-growing annual grasses. By early summer, after grasses have died, seedlings can be defoliated by a locally abundant caterpillar, the western tussock moth (Orgyia vetusta). I examined the relative importance of competition and insect herbivory on seedling survival in two separate experiments. First, I compared seedling mortality in plots either exposed to or protected from tussock moth larvae. Plants were protected from herbivory by the judicious use of insecticide; control plants were sprayed with water. Tussock moth herbivory resulted in significantly greater (31%) seedling mortality. To determine the effects of interspecific competition for light on seedling survival, I manipulated the density of grass surrounding lupine seedlings. I removed all vegetation surrounding some individuals, and left intact vegetation surrounding others. Reducing competition resulted in a 32% increase in seedling survival from February to June, as well as changes in seedling growth. To determine whether there are interactive effects of competition and herbivory on seedling survival, I enclosed tussock moth larvae on half of all surviving seedlings within each of the two prior competition treatments, comparing growth and survival of defoliated and undefoliated seedlings. Defoliation in June led to an additional 50% mortality for individuals that had grown with competitors through spring, and a 53% additional mortality for seedlings that grew without competitors through spring. Thus, although competition and herbivory both caused substantial seedling mortality, there was no statistical interaction between these factors. Competition-free plants were not less vulnerable to herbivory than plants that previously grew with competitors. Taken together, these experiments indicate that competition and herbivory are both important sources of mortality for bush lupine seedlings. In the meiotic prophase nucleus of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, chromosomes are arranged in an oriented manner: telomeres cluster in close proximity to the spindle pole body (SPB), while centromeres form another cluster at some distance from the SPB. We have isolated a mutant, kms1, in which the structure of the meiotic prophase nucleus appears to be distorted. Using specific probes to localize the SPB and telomeres, multiple signals were observed in the mutant nuclei, in contrast to the case in wild-type. Genetic analysis showed that in the mutant, meiotic recombination frequency was reduced to about one-quarter of the wild-type level and meiotic segregation was impaired. This phenotype strongly suggests that the telomere-led rearrangement of chromosomal distribution that normally occurs in the fission yeast meiotic nucleus is an important prerequisite for the efficient pairing of homologous chromosomes. The kms1 mutant was also impaired in karyogamy, suggesting that the kms1 + gene is involved in SPB function. However, the kms1 + gene is dispensable for mitotic growth.
