The development of all osteological elements, except scales, of the Japanese sardine,Sardinops melanostictus, is described from newly-hatched larvae to adult fishes. Newly-hatched larvae lacked osteological elements. Part of the head skeleton began to develop in 53 hour old larvae (4.2 mm in notochord length [NL]). Larvae at the first-feeding stage (77 hours, 5.5 mm NL) possessed several elements of the head skeleton and pectoral fin supports. In a 10.5 mm NL specimen, part of the caudal and dorsal fin supports were apparent. The centra appeared in specimens 18–22.7 mm in standard length (SL). Gill rakers were first observed in the lower branchial arches at 13 mm NL and spine-like processes with spiny nodules from about 25 mm SL. The distance between the predorsal and first dorsal proximal radial relative to SL rapidly decreased with forward translocation of the dorsal fin and became constant beyond approximately 34 mm SL. At this stage, most basic osteological elements were established. Completion of the osteological structure was characterized by the disappearance of the dentary teeth at 60–70 mm SL. Based on the osteological development, ontogenetic intervals consisting of four periods and eight phases were recognized.  相似文献

The osteological development of the synanceiidInimicus japonicus, was described on the basis of five larvae and four juveniles (4.2–10.1 mm BL) reared in the laboratory, and two wild adult specimens. All bones, except for the basisphenoid, were formed in all larvae and juveniles, but fusions between the uppermost actinost and scapula, upper caudal plate and urostyle, and third preural centrum and hemal spine were not completed by 10.1 mm BL. Following comparison with the adult condition, a rod-like ossified bone without a tooth plate on the upper branchial arch of larvae and juveniles was considered homologous with the second pharyngobranchial. The number of epurals and length of the neural spine on the second preural centrum varied (unrelated to growth) and it is inferred thatJ. japonicus shows intraspecific variations in these bones.  相似文献

The osteological development of the feeding apparatus was examined in early stage larvae of laboratory-reared seabass,Lates calcarifer. At initial mouth openings 40 hours after hatching, the larvae were equipped with the fundamental elements forming the oral cavity, such as the trabecular roof, the lower branchial and hyoid arches forming the floor, the quadrate and symplectic-hyomandibular cartilages making up the sides, and the maxilla and Meckel's cartilage bordering the jaws. The cleithrum appeared almost simultaneously. The mechanics of creating a negative pressure in the oral cavity, which results in a “sucking” mode of feeding, were elucidated from these elements. During a period from 50–60 to 100–110 hours after initial mouth opening (HAMO), new elements such as the premaxilla and jaw teeth appeared, and the ossification of existing elements started. The new elements apparently enabled the larvae to “grasp” food organisms, in addition to the already existing and increasing sucking ability, from 100–110 HAMO.  相似文献

The distribution of somatostatin immunoreactive forms in three tissues of the anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius L.) was analyzed by a combination of gel permeation, High Pressure Liquid Chromatography and amino acid analysis. The data indicate that prosomatostatins I and II are expressed in both neural and gastro-intestinal tissues and that their post-translational processing gives rise to somatostatin-14 I, somatostatin-28 II and to some of its hydroxylysine23-derivative, respectively. It is concluded that, in contrast to the mammals, production of two somatostatins in the Teleostean fish requires two structurally distinct precursors whose processing operates in a fixed pattern rather than in a tissue-specific manner.  相似文献

Extant and fossil Australian chelonioid turtles were examined for 57 osteological morphometric variables. Data were analysed using principal components analysis and canonical variates analysis, after Burnaby isometric 'size' removal, as well as multivariate allometry. Results indicate that Lepidochelys spp. are proportionately differentiated from other Cheloniidae. The majority of chelonioid osteological variables scale isometrically, with less than a third exhibiting positive or negative allometry. Skull length and width, postero-ventral skull, mandible length, scapular and pubic variables are found to be useful for differentiating between extant and extinct chelonioids. Skull length and width, mandible height, jaw symphysis length, premaxilla height, femoral length, scapular, pelvic, plastral and rib variables are established as useful differentiators of cheloniids. Australian fossil protostegids are morphometrically more similar to cheloniids than dermochelyids, and no cranial morphometric evidence could be found for the presence of more than one protostegid species. Some osteological allometric variables may be valuable for use in determining the relationships of chelonioids; however these should be examined in conjunction with morphology-based cladistic analyses to test established phylogenies.  相似文献

Abstract

A demographic and osteological analysis of skeletons from the Larson Village Site (39WW2), Walworth County, South Dakota, is presented. The site was an Arikara village dating to about A.D. 1750-1785. Within the village, the scattered and commingled bones of 71 individuals were discovered. Sixty-one of the skeletons were on earthlodge floors, an extremely unusual occurrence in the Plains. The objective of this analysis was to determine whether the cause responsible for these unburied remains was Intertribal warfare: the evidence is strong that it was.  相似文献

We have examined a 5th to 6th century inhumation from Great Chesterford, Essex, UK. The incomplete remains are those of a young male, aged around 21–35 years at death. The remains show osteological evidence of lepromatous leprosy (LL) and this was confirmed by lipid biomarker analysis and ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, which provided evidence for both multi-copy and single copy loci from the Mycobacterium leprae genome. Genotyping showed the strain belonged to the 3I lineage, but the Great Chesterford isolate appeared to be ancestral to 3I strains found in later medieval cases in southern Britain and also continental Europe. While a number of contemporaneous cases exist, at present, this case of leprosy is the earliest radiocarbon dated case in Britain confirmed by both aDNA and lipid biomarkers. Importantly, Strontium and Oxygen isotope analysis suggest that the individual is likely to have originated from outside Britain. This potentially sheds light on the origins of the strain in Britain and its subsequent spread to other parts of the world, including the Americas where the 3I lineage of M. leprae is still found in some southern states of America.  相似文献

Summary The effects of glucose and arginine on islet hormone biosynthesis were investigated using primary cell cultures prepared from islets of the anglerfish (Lophius americanus). After dispersion under sterile conditions, islet cells were maintained at 23° C in medium containing RPMI 1640 with Hanks' buffer, pH 7.5, modified by the adjustment of glucose (to 0.56 or 5.6 mM) and arginine (to 0.1, 1.15, or 10 mM) with the addition of 10% fetal bovine serum (dialyzed, heat inactivated) and penicillin/streptomycin. After 48 h, media were replaced by incorporation media containing [14C]isoleucine and [3H]tryptophan and incubated for an additional 8 h under otherwise identical conditions. Culture samples (cells plus media) were extracted, desalted, and gel filtered to identify and quantitate [14C]insulin, [3H]glucagon(s) plus [3H]somatostatin-28, and [3H]somatostatin-14 were In some experiments, [14C]insulin, [3H]glucagon(s), [3H]somatostatin-28, and [3H]somatostatin-14 were separated by high performance liquid chromatography. Raising the medium glucose from 0.56 (control) to 5.6 mM resulted in an augmentation in incorporation of [14C]isoleucine into insulin and an augmentation of [3H]tryptophan into glucagon(s) and somatostatin-14, but no change in incorporation of [3H]tryptophan into somatostatin-28. Raising the concentration of arginine from 0.1 to 1.15 or 10 mM resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of labeled amino acid incorporation into all hormones except somatostatin-28. The results demonstrate the usefulness of the culture system for studying the modulation of hormone biosynthesis in anglerfish islet cells. Relationships among the species of the annual fish Cynolebias are unclear. An analysis of the variation and utility of osteological characters for phylogenetic analysis was done using cleared and double-stained specimens representing 21 species of Cynolebias. This analysis showed that some of the characters previously used to diagnose this genus and some of the species are polymorphic. Osteologically, Cynolebias can be diagnosed by the following synapomorphies: (1) triangular-shaped parietal, (2) vomer positioned ventral to the parasphenoid, (3) long ventral process of the dentary, (4) teeth on fourth ceratobranchial, and (5) teeth on first epibranchial. In addition, characters that help define some of the currently recognized species complexes were identified. Species in the “antenori complex” share at least five synapomorphies, such as ossified medial radials of dorsal and anal fins, four pectoral radials, ventral process of the maxillae enlarged, mesopterygoid long relative to the autopalatine, and proportion of cartilage in the basihyal. The “bellottii complex” is characterized by having a reduced basihyal and a deep urohyal, whereas species in the “elongatus complex” possess a caudal fin supported by four vertebrae and have unique modifications of jaw bones. The following osteological features are useful as diagnostic characters at the specific level: (1) Two vertebrae supporting the caudal fin (C. nigripinnis); (2) cartilaginous pelvic bones (C. notatus); (3) short third postcleithrum and broad lateral process of the sphenotic (C. wolterstorffi); (4) thick third postcleithrum (C. gymnoventris); (5) crest on the parietal and reduced in the upper portion of the lacrimal (C. whitei); (6) anteriorly curved lacrimal (C. cheradophilus); (7) second dermosphenotic (C. bellottii); and (8) expansion of the ventral tip of the maxillae and long basyhial (C. constanciae).
