The theory of evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS) in asymmetric contests predicts that the propensity of an individual to expose itself to risk during contests depends on the individual's resource-holding-potential (RHP) and on the value of the disputed resource (V) for the individual compared with that for an opponent. If encounters of a territory owner with individuals of high RHP and high food demands (V) increase in frequency, one should expect a decrease in total aggressiveness of the territory owner, and in consequence a decrease of its territory size. Such a decrease should result in a lower amount of food consumed by the territory owner. Using natural variability in RHP and V in Gerris lacustris, I experimentally tested these predictions. The average prey item has higher value (V) for reproductive female water striders (which probably transform most of their food into eggs), than for nonreproductive females and for males. Because males are smaller, they have lower RHP than females, as RHP depends on size. Thus the reproductive females are the class of individuals of high RHP and high food demands (high V). Most nonreproductive females defend food-based territories. I observed two groups of water striders in a seminatural laboratory setting. As predicted, there was a negative correlation between the rate of encounter with reproductive females and size of the territory, and a positive correlation between territory size and number of Drosophila flies consumed by the owner. Territories were smaller in the group with high rates of encounter between territory owners and reproductive females. Territory owners caught the same number of Drosophila flies as non-territorial individuals in this group. In contrast, in the group with fewer encounters between territory owners and reproductive females, territories were larger, and territory owners gained more food than non territorial water striders.  相似文献

Territoriality is an important male behavioral trait used in mate selection of butterflies, but the factors determining the outcome of territorial contests remain controversial. We studied the foraging and territorial behaviors of males in the Parnassius imperator butterfly. Adult males were selective about nectar sources, but they did not defend nectar flowers. By contrast, they fought over areas of bare rocks because bare rocks were used as lek locations to attract and court receptive females. The ownership of a lek, rather than sex pheromones or wing pigments, played the key role in attracting females. In an owner replacement experiment, the owner of a territory always defeated intruders, indicating that perching order, not relative body size, determined the outcome of territorial contests. Territories are small areas of bare rocks that lack food resources, so intruders do not challenge the ownership of a resident in a location where they can easily find vacant territories. Males that first perch in a territory have an advantage compared to intruders in that they can forage on flowers in the vicinity of the territory. This may help explain why satiated owners always defeated fatigued intruders. Our findings suggest that early perching on bare rock allows male butterflies of P. imperator to occupy a territory, attract receptive females and exclude later‐arriving competitors.  相似文献

Contests between males fighting over limited resources often determine the reproductive success of the contestants. It is possible that the outcomes of such contests are affected by traits that also contribute to the likelihood of males achieving paternity when sperm from multiple males compete to fertilize the ova of a single female; however, this relationship has been poorly characterized. In dung and carrion roller beetles, contests among males for the possession of a food ball – a vital resource for nesting – are frequent in nature. However, females that roll and nest with a male often store the sperm of previous mates, forcing males to engage in sperm competition. We analyzed the relationship between wins and losses in contests between food ball owner males and subsequent paternity success in the carrion roller beetle Canthon cyanellus using both naïve (virgin) and experienced (previously mated) males. Owner males that initiated contests were more likely to win, and contest durations were longer between experienced owner males than between naïve owners. The paternity of the winner owner males nesting with a female that had previously mated with another male was higher than for loser owner males, and the paternity of experienced owners also tended to be higher than for virgin owners. Our results indicate that winning and being an experienced male are associated with greater success at fighting and sperm competition than losing and being a naïve male.  相似文献

Predictions of game theory models about the outcome of animal conflicts have most often been tested using male contests for mates, territories or food. We studied female contests for nest sites and mates in the pied flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca, and asked which factors affect the outcome and duration of the contests. Conflicts over residency were experimentally induced, but natural cases in which both females regarded themselves as owners were also included in the analyses. The ensuing escalated contests involved physical fighting, defence of the nestbox of the male and alarm calling. Contrary to expectations from game theory, fighting seemed to occur most often at the start of conflicts, whereas alarm calling occurred towards the end and nestbox visits throughout the conflict. The outcome of the contests was not determined by asymmetries in body size or age, nor by a simple previous-present owner asymmetry. Instead, it depended on the relative residence times of the opponents. The duration of the contests tended to increase with decreasing asymmetry in the residence times of females, whereas body size asymmetries had no influence. Because there is intense competition between females for a mate in the pied flycatcher, we suggest that females do not respect asymmetries in residency and body size, but fight in relation to the value of the mating opportunity. In particular, we point to the possibility that the value of a mating opportunity may increase with residence time because knowledge of other mating options may become outdated.  相似文献

The effects of ownership, energy status and relative size on the ability to defend a territory were studied in dyadic contests among wild brown trout fry. A logistic regression showed that the territory owner won 85% of the contests with opponents of equal size, and that a 30% size advantage was required to balance the advantage of ownership. The occurrence of polygyny requires specific environmental conditions such as female aggregation or patchy resource distribution. However, it is difficult to determine the factors responsible for polygyny in species in which the territories of both sexes overlap. To overcome this, we performed female removal experiments in the polygynous triggerfish Sufflamen chrysopterum (Balistidae) in the Okinawa coral reef. Both sexes defended their territories exclusively against consexuals of the same species, and female aggregation was absent. Each male territory included 1–3 female territories, and nonterritorial males were significantly smaller than territorial males. Further, the body size of territorial males was positively correlated with that of the largest female in their territories, and larger males tended to mate with more females. The results of the female removal experiments (n = 10 females) indicated that females competed for better territories rather than larger mates. In contrast, males abandoned the territories once the females emigrated. These results strongly suggest that males defend females rather than sites and compete for larger and a greater numbers of females. Thus, in S. chrysopterum, female defense polygyny occurs in the absence of female aggregation.  相似文献

We studied sexual dominance and seasonal differences in aggressiveness of individuals in intraspecific competition for shells of the hermit crab Pagurus filholi in terms of size of contestants and duration of the attempt to deprive other crabs of their shell. Experiments were conducted using paired intrasexual and intersexual contests in the pre-breeding and post-breeding seasons. Size ratios between contestants were systematically varied to assess the sexual difference in size and owner advantages. In both intrasexual and intersexual contests intruder crabs tended to win the contests more often as their size increased, that is, size advantage overcame owner advantage. Although we did not recognize a sexual difference in size and owner advantages in contest outcomes, male intruder crabs took a shorter time to deprive female owners of a shell than to deprive male owners. Furthermore, male individuals in the pre-breeding season had significantly longer fight durations. Fighting is costly. Thus males can afford to expend more energy and time fighting, indicating that males are dominant over females in shell fights as both intruders and owners. Electronic Publication  相似文献

Current evidence suggests that in Hetaerina damselflies males exhibit lek mating system. In this study, in order to answer if the same occurs in Hetaerina rosea Selys, we manipulated vegetation substrates used as territories and quantified the number of visiting females, males defending territories and fight intensity. We also examined whether body size and wing pigmentation are selectable traits in male-male competition, and if age affects male territorial behavior. Our results showed that males with larger pigmented areas won more contests, independently of body size. Old males changed from territoriality to sneaking strategy. Contrary to other Hetaerina species, males of H. rosea do not display lek behavior, but defend resources according to the resource defense polygyny strategy.  相似文献

Theory predicts that asymmetry between contenders influences their ability to defend resources. More recently, some theoretical approaches have also examined the circumstances that might promote sharing of the disputed resources. We tested these hypotheses in males of the ball roller beetle Canthon cyanellus cyanellus. Males fight for possession of a food ball, which is a vital resource used for nesting. We evaluated the role of food resource ownership, body size and reproductive status on the outcome of contests (win, lose or share) between males that rolled a food ball (owners or finders) either alone or with a female partner, when faced with male intruders (or joiners). Large owners of a food ball had a higher probability of victory than small intruders, and small owners had a high probability of losing when faced with large intruders. The reproductive status of both contenders also influenced their chances of winning: previously mated owners of a food ball had a higher probability of winning than virgin owners. Males of a similar size tended to split the food ball, thereby sharing the resource. Our results suggest that competitors may adjust the intensity of their aggression depending at least on their own resource holding power (RHP), the value of the resource in dispute and perhaps even the RHP of their opponents. Sharing the food ball emerges as a fresh solution between similarly matched contestants.  相似文献

Residency is an important predictor of success in contests with ownership asymmetries. Residency often can interact with a winning experience. However, given that some residents lose a contest even when showing an ownership advantage and that the process leading to loss often determines the loser's subsequent success, prior ownership might also interact with a loss. Here, we staged experimental contests between males of the hermit crab Pagurus minutus with a similar-sized weapon (i.e., cheliped) to examine this possibility. Male–male contests in this species occur between a solitary intruder and an owner guarding a mature female. We evaluated (a) whether resource ownership and female value affect the contest outcome and (b) whether the probability of winning after losing differs depending on the initial role of the loser (i.e., owner or intruder) by using precopulatory guarding pairs of P. minutus collected from the field. In the first fighting trial, we found an ownership advantage and increasing owner success as the body size of his partner increased. Although some owners lost the fight, in contrast to our prediction, the frequency of losing in the second fighting trial did not differ between prior owners and prior intruders. Because losers from the first fighting trial of male–male contests have no female regardless of their initial role, this shared solitary status might be related to the lack of difference in success in the second fighting trial. Moreover, unlike in other animals, resident status might not always assure greater fighting ability in P. minutus males because guarding Pagurus males can avoid male–male contests by climbing up objects in the field. Losers in the first trial, therefore, may have been weaker contestants based on traits other than size, regardless of whether they were owners or intruders.  相似文献

A positive relationship between ownership and contest success is widespread among territorial butterflies. We tested the hypothesis that owners win simply because they have a longer experience occupying a given territory than do intruders in territorial butterflies. Using the lycaenid butterfly Chrysozephyrus smaragdinus , we staged contests between two males that had experienced different residency periods at the same contested territory, similar to owners and intruders in natural contests. We found that males that had occupied the contested territory for a longer period (a day) always defeated the shorter occupancy males (15 min). Therefore, residency period plays a key role in settling territorial contests. As residency confers advantages in a time-dependent manner, the mechanism of owner dominance could be an increase in motivation to fight as local familiarity increases. Moreover, this result predicts a population-level territorial dynamics. If residency period per se confers advantages in each contest, males arriving at a territory early in their adult season should acquire territorial dominance because they can remain there for a certain period with only a few rivals; late-appearing males do not have this advantage. As predicted, we found that males appearing at territory sites early in the season were more likely to hold their territories. This finding provides new evidence for the evolution of protandry in butterflies.  相似文献

Territoriality drives the evolution of many mating systems, yet has remained an extremely difficult trait to measure in the wild. Classic studies rely on the theoretical framework of resource holding potential (RHP) as a predictor of success in territory acquisition. However, mounting evidence suggests that an individual's RHP may change over short time scales. Previous studies suggest that RHP is best understood by considering two categories of territoriality, resource defending and resource usurping potential (RDP and RUP, respectively). In a population of the side-blotched lizard, Uta stansburiana, blue-throated males defend territories near their natal site (RDP) while mature orange-throated males use their RUP to sequester high quality territories from defending territorial males. We tested differences in territoriality by releasing pairs of maturing male lizards onto experimentally altered territories that had improved thermal qualities owing to the addition of rock piles. Dyads of males competed for these thermal resources and the females that were released on rock piles. Early in the season, when throat colors were not yet fully expressed, large male body size predicted contest victories irrespective of throat color. This pattern changed however, with the onset of the breeding season and maturation of throat color. Orange males tended to usurp territories from blue males within 2 weeks of contest initiation. Large male body size still influenced these contests, but after one more week, throat color was the sole factor explaining variance in territory ownership. We demonstrate the ontogeny of territoriality relating to body size and throat color during maturation, and suggest a novel approach to assessing territoriality and aggression in the wild.  相似文献

Fights between male Euophrys parvula, a New Zealand salticid spider, consist of a number of discrete ‘stages’, of increasing intensity. Two aspects of these contests were investigated: (1) relative body size of the two opponents, and (2) the presence of a ‘resource’ (a female model). In 92% of all contests where a size difference existed, the larger of the two opponents won. Contest intensity (measured as the highest intensity behaviour elicited during the contest) was inversely correlated with relative body size of the two opponents (measured as carapace width). Contests escalated further when the female model was present. No relationship was found between contest duration and either relative body size or the presence of the model. It is suggested that for contests in which a number of behaviours of different intensity are used, contest intensity may be a better estimate of contest cost than duration. The results are discussed in terms of theoretical models of contest behaviour.  相似文献

The mate-locating behavior of male butterflies has been classified into two major types, territorial and patrolling. Territorial males defend a specific site, whereas patrolling males fly around a wider area without having to defend a site. In this study, I investigated the use of these tactics by males of the satyrine butterfly, Lethe diana. A previous study suggested that the males of L. diana change their mate-locating behavior during the day (they patrol in the morning and defend territories in the afternoon) and that patrolling is the primary mating strategy, whereas defending territories is a supplementary one. In the present study, I found that the daily activity pattern of the males of L. diana was similar to that described in the previous study: males often flew around in the morning and competed for territories in the afternoon. However, contrary to the previous study, all courtships and copulations were performed within male territories during their territorial activity. Closer observations revealed that copulations found in male territories were achieved by the owner of the territory. Males tended to feed in the morning, suggesting that the males flying in the morning searched for food rather than females. I conclude that territory holding is the primary male matelocating tactic in L. diana. I further found that, in summer, males exhibited territorial behavior later than in spring or autumn, which may be a strategy for preventing heat stress.  相似文献

A field study of disputes over ownership of mating territories by male tarbush grasshoppers (Ligurotettix planum) revealed that most contests were settled ritualistically via the antiphonal exchange of acoustic signals. Males used a special aggressive signal, referred to as the “shuck” call, in these encounters. Individuals that never produced shuck calls invariably departed the contested sites, and a playback experiment showed that shuck calls elicited higher response levels from males than sexual advertisement calls. Approximately 1/5 of all territorial contests escalated to biting, grappling, or kicking. The outcomes of territorial contests that were settled via purely acoustic encounters could not be predicted by the size of the participants. Prior residency was a predictor of winning in some contests, but often the competing males did not possess clear intruder/resident roles. However, a signal parameter that was a combined measure of the rate of shuck calls and their mean length predicted the winner of most acoustic encounters. Contests that escalated, though, were generally distinguished by participants that displayed comparable measures of all signal parameters save call length. A tradeoff occurred between call rate and length in most individuals. This, as well as the finding that call length did predict winning in escalated contests, implies that these signal parameters may reflect an individual's strength or motivation. Contests in which the signal parameters of the males were similar tended to be prolonged and escalated. This relationship suggests that individuals assess the signals of their rivals and depart if they cannot match their call rate and length. That both call rate and length are assessed may enhance the reliability with which signals can be used to predict a rival's fighting ability in the event of escalation. Various simple mechanisms for signal assessment are proposed. A second playback experiment suggested that the insects heard less effectively while they called. Timing mechanisms that preclude the overlap of calls during contests occur, and they may have evolved because of the importance of precise assessment of the signals of rivals. Such mechanisms circumvent the potential impairment in perception noted above and also generate a conspicuous feature of L. planum contests — mutual alternation of signals.  相似文献

Male dung beetles compete to obtain food and females, and early resource recognition and appropriation increase the probability of mating. The outcome of such encounters is expected to be defined by self‐ and the opponent’s health condition. In this study, we analyzed the effect of body condition and immune defense on the contest dynamics between males that rolled a food ball with a partner female (owner males) and intruder males of dung beetle Canthon cyanellus. Body condition was measured as body size, body dry mass, lipid mass, and muscle mass; immune defense was estimated via phenoloxidase activity. Owner males with higher lipid mass contacted the food ball significantly earlier than owner males with lower lipid mass. Individuals with lower phenoloxidase activity started to roll food balls earlier than individuals with higher phenoloxidase activity. Owner males that had higher body dry mass, compared to female partners, began to roll the food ball significantly earlier than male–female pairs with lower differences in dry mass. Heavier males won significantly more contests than lighter males. Our results suggest that the health condition is a key factor related to the dynamics and outcome of male–male contests for resources and females in C. cyanellus. Consequently, differences in individual condition are main determinants of contest outcomes in dung beetles.  相似文献

Territory size can be considered as the outcome of contests between an owner and its neighbours for the resource units in the defended area. Variation in territory size could be dependent upon three possible asymmetries: (1) difference in resource holding potential (RHP); (2) difference in resource value to the competitors; and (3) difference in ‘ownership’ status. These possibilities were tested in a 3-year study of moorhens which defend linear territories along ditches in a grazing marsh habitat. Of the three, relative difference in RHP between an owner and its two neighbours provided the best correlation with territory size. There was no relationship between the amount of resources per unit area and territory size nor between the time of establishing a territory and its later size. Heavier moorhens are more likely to win contests in winter flocks and are thought to have a greater RHP. The ratio of the weight of a male territory owner to the weight of both its male neighbours was highly correlated with territory size. Birds with larger territories may gain more potential nesting sites with good cover from predators.  相似文献

Summary A laboratory experiment with the broad-headed skink (Eumeces laticeps) involving staged agonistic encounters demonstrates that larger males have an advantage over smaller ones in agonistic bouts. Field data on head wounds produced by intraspecific fighting during the breeding season show a much higher frequency of new wounds among males over 100 mm in snout-vent-length than in smaller males. The significant difference in new-wound frequency strongly suggests avoidance of fights by the small males, which is corroborated by laboratory and field observations. Access by males to reproductively active females depends on the ability to defeat other males in aggressive contests virtually always involving head biting if the males are of nearly equal size. Because the probability of winning agonistic encounters increases with size, young males avoid fights with older males. Aggressive contests with larger males and reproductive attempts other than courtship in the absence of larger males are deferred.Aggressive behavior in E. laticeps may be employed in direct defense of females, but might also be expressed in defense of specific sites and/or territories. In the laboratory, males in their home cages were significantly more likely to win encounters with males of similar size than were males fighting in the home cages of opponents. This suggests that encounter site could be important in determining encounter outcome and that field study of possible site defense or territoriality is needed.  相似文献

Populations of male Polistes fuscatus simultaneously exhibit two different mate-locating tactics. Some males defend territories in female nesting and hibernation sites. These males frequently do not occupy the same territory each day, and they drag their gasters over perches, which may function to apply a secretion to the perch. Another segment of the population patrols large overlapping areas in female foraging sites. In contrast to territorial males, patrolling males do not rub their gasters on perches, and males seen on more than one day are tenacious to one area. Males in both sites are aggressive to other males and attempt to copulate with females. A laboratory study indicates that large males have an advantage in male-male competition. The mean size of patrollers is smaller than that of territorial males, indicating that patrollers are competitively inferior males. Yet there is considerable size overlap of males between the two sites, suggesting that there is also overlap in the range of probability of mating success between the two sites.  相似文献

The longnose filefish,Oxymonacanthus longirostris, usually lives in heterosexual pairs, the male and female swimming together and sharing the same territory. Pair territoriality in the species was examined in detail in relation to sexual differences in territorial defense activities. Rigorous pair territoriality was maintained only during the breeding season, although pairs used their home ranges exclusively to a certain extent, during the non-breeding season. The frequency of aggression against other conspecific pairs in the breeding season was higher than in the non-breeding season. Agonistic interactions appear to be over both mates and food resources, the strict pair territoriality in the breeding season possibly being due to mutual mate guarding. In intraspecific aggressive interactions, males usually led their partner females when attacking intruders. The feeding frequency of males was much lower than that of females in the breeding season. Mate removal experiments indicated that females could not defend their original territories solitarily and their feeding frequency decreased. Conversely, males could defend territories solitarily without a decrease in feeding frequency. These results suggest that males contribute most to the defense of the pair territory, with females benefiting from territorial pair-swimming with their partner males.  相似文献
