Further research was conducted on the ‘displacement’ nest activities occurring during the courtship of the male three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus. In several respects the results were found to be inconsistent with the widely accepted disinhibition explanation of displacement activities. One difficulty is that this theory ignores the possibility that the performance of the displacement act might itself play some causal role in motivational adjustment, as demonstrated in the present circumstances (Wilz 1970). In addition, the disinhibition hypothesis proposes that those behaviours prepotent in an animal's repertoire are those that are most likely to occur in the conflict situation of courtship. In the stickleback, however, it is not the most frequent behaviours prior to the conflict situation that occur most frequently during the ‘displacement’ contexts of courtship. Finally, the disinhibition view assumes functionally unrelated activities each have their own causal factors entirely separate from those of other behaviours, a view challenged by the present findings. All of these difficulties are considered in relation to the nature of stickleback courtship.  相似文献

Darwin''s finches are a classic example of adaptive radiation. The ecological diversity of the Galápagos in part explains that radiation, but the fact that other founder species did not radiate suggests that other factors are also important. One hypothesis attempting to identify the extra factor is the flexible stem hypothesis, connecting individual adaptability to species richness. According to this hypothesis, the ancestral finches were flexible and therefore able to adapt to the new and harsh environment they encountered by exploiting new food types and developing new foraging techniques. Phenotypic variation was initially mediated by learning, but genetic accommodation entrenched differences and supplemented them with morphological adaptations. This process subsequently led to diversification and speciation of the Darwin''s finches. Their current behaviour is consistent with this hypothesis as these birds use unusual resources by extraordinary means. In this paper, we identify cognitive capacities on which flexibility and innovation depend. The flexible stem hypothesis predicts that we will find high levels of these capacities in all species of Darwin''s finches (not just those using innovative techniques). Here, we test that prediction, and find that while most of our data are in line with the flexible stem hypothesis, some are in tension with it.  相似文献

Recent research has shown that social relationships may exert positive effects on fitness. Therefore, it is expected that animals make efforts to develop and preserve close social bonds. Reconciliation is a conflict resolution mechanism, which allows buffering the negative effects of aggressive conflict on social relationships. As socioecological theories claim that intrasexual competition and conflict‐shaped social interactions among macaque males, postconflict behaviour should reflect the effects of these evolutionary forces. Here, we present the results of a study on a provisioned group of Macaca arctoides in Thailand focusing exclusively on male postconflict behaviour. Through an Information Theory–Model Selection approach, we evaluated the relative support for three predictions about the occurrence of reconciliation and the quality of the opponents' social relationships. The strength of the opponents' affiliative relationship was the only variable predicting reconciliation occurrence. This agrees with the main prediction of the valuable relationship hypothesis for the function and distribution of reconciliation, which states that the opponents sharing high‐quality relationships are more likely to reconcile, and this interaction is aimed to repair the disturbing effects of previous aggression on their relationship. The conciliatory tendency found among these wild males is much lower than reported previously for this species from captive conditions, matching more closely the rates reported for species with an intolerant‐despotic dominance style. The results offer strong support for the importance of developing and preserving valuable relationships, even among rather intolerant males.  相似文献

In a number of experiments designed to investigate the interaction between sexual behaviour and breathing, male newts were presented with females whose behaviour was controlled by the experimenter. In some experiments the male received sufficient positive feedback from the female to enable him to complete his sexual sequence; in others he did not. The results are interpreted in terms of McFarland's (1969) hypothesis that the transitions from one activity of another may occur either by competition or by disinhibition. It is suggested that in the absence of sufficient positive stimulation to enable the male to complete his sexual sequence, breathing occurs by competition with sexual behaviour. When the male has sufficient stimulation the temporal patterning of his behaviour becomes more under his control and breathing occurs by disinhibition.  相似文献

Reconciliation is a conflict resolution mechanism that is common to many gregarious species with individualized societies. Reconciliation repairs the damaged relationship between the opponents and decreases postconflict (PC) anxiety. The "integrated hypothesis" links the quality of the opponents' relationship to PC anxiety, since it proposes that conflicts among partners with high relationship quality will yield high levels of PC anxiety, which in turn will lead to an increased likelihood of reconciliation. We tested the integrated hypothesis in captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the Arnhem Zoo, The Netherlands. We applied the standard PC/matched control (MC) method. Our results mostly support the integrated hypothesis, in that more valuable and compatible partners (i.e., males and frequent groomers) reconciled more often than less valuable and weakly compatible partners (i.e., females and infrequent groomers). In addition, PC anxiety was higher after conflicts among males than among females. Emotional arousal thus appears to be a mediator facilitating reconciliation. However, in contrast to the predictions derived from the integrated hypothesis, PC anxiety appeared only in aggressees, and not in aggressors, of conflicts. This suggests that while relationship quality determines PC anxiety, it is dependent on the role of the participants in the conflict.  相似文献

Sexual conflict is ubiquitous across taxa. It often results in male harassment of females for mating opportunities that are costly for females, in some cases reducing reproductive success and increasing mortality. One strategy that females may employ to avoid sexual harassment is to segregate spatially from males. In fact, we do find sexual segregation in habitat use in species that have high levels of sexual conflict; however, the role of sexual harassment in driving such segregation remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate experimentally in a population of wild Trinidadian guppies Poecilia reticulata that male sexual harassment drives females into habitats that they otherwise do not prefer to occupy. In support of the social factors hypothesis for sexual segregation, which states that social factors such as harassment drive sexual segregation, this female behaviour leads to segregation of the sexes. In the presence of males, females actively select areas of high predation risk, but low male presence, and thus trade off increased predation risk against reduced sexual harassment.  相似文献

Although much research has been carried out on Australopithecus afarensis locomotion, no consensus has yet been reached. Our new critic study on femoral material brings to the fore a strictly bipedal behaviour within this taxon. Our results are based on the pertinence of human anatomical characteristics among A. afarensis and on the absence of characteristics revealing arboreal displacement. These results have emerged from our different observation and interpretation of some preceding authors concerning the anatomy of these fossil hominids. It is important to underline that apomorphic characteristics of this species are difficult to interpret. They must not however be used to support the idea of arboreal displacement simply based on the fact of a no totally human morphe. We believe that present day humans do not necessarily reflect the earliest strict bipedal anatomic model. An the other hand, it appears that the disagreement between the two locomotor hypothesis for A. afarensis that are bipedalism and arboreal displacement, facing the possibility of bipedalism associated with negligible arboreal displacement, results more from an evolutionary fact than from a real scientific conflict.  相似文献

In five-minute records in which they were rejected by their mothers, passive preventions of nipple access, 11- to 15-week-old group-living rhesus monkey infants (Macaca mulatta) initiated fewer playful conctacts with others relative to the other kinds of social contact they initiated, while their overall rates of initiating social contacts may not have been reduced. Whether acts of maternal rejection are costly and distressing to the infant may depend on the nature of the social companions available for it and until more is known of the context of such acts, hypothesis about weaning conflict will be difficult to test in detail.  相似文献

In battles, opponents exhibit positive illusions in both believing they can win. With great costs of failure and uncertain success, this represents extreme risk-taking behaviour. Conflict may be expected if one side is cornered, a sacrificial pawn in an overall war strategy, or demanded into action by politicians. However, in many cases even patently weaker forces fight despite nonviolent options. This is “military incompetence”, a failure in the assessment of winning probability. Previous explanations (stupidity, psychological deviance and cognitive constraints) have been rejected. Recently, Wrangham [Evol. Hum. Behav. 20 (1999) 3.] proposed that such risk-taking could be adaptive through one of two effects: (1) Performance Enhancement through exaggerated resolve or (2) Opponent Deception by bluffing. Although adaptive if they confer a tendency to win, both processes promote risk-taking behaviour and are therefore potentially responsible for military incompetence. These hypotheses can be distinguished because the Performance Enhancement hypothesis predicts positive illusions in any type of conflict. In contrast, the Opponent Deception hypothesis predicts them in battles but not in surprise attacks, where lack of communication disables any bluff. We conducted a test of these hypotheses using data collected by the US Historical Evaluation Research Organisation, mainly from the Arab–Israeli and Second World Wars. The Opponent Deception hypothesis is supported over the Performance Enhancement hypothesis, but other explanations are not ruled out.  相似文献

Play has been defined as apparently functionless behaviour, yet since play is costly, models of adaptive evolution predict that it should have some beneficial function (or functions) that outweigh its costs. We provide strong evidence for a long-standing, but poorly supported hypothesis: that early social play is practice for later dominance relationships. We calculated the relative dominance rank by observing the directional outcome of playful interactions in juvenile and yearling yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) and found that these rank relationships were correlated with later dominance ranks calculated from agonistic interactions, however, the strength of this relationship attenuated over time. While play may have multiple functions, one of them may be to establish later dominance relationships in a minimally costly way.  相似文献

The pattern of TSH secretion in man in pulsatile in addition to the well known circadian variation. The mechanism triggering TSH pulses remains unclear to date. Infusions of somatostatin or dopamine rapidly lowering basal TSH levels without suppressing the pulsatile pattern suggest that an episodic disinhibition exerted by a physiological inhibitor is not a likely cause. On the same basis, thyroid hormones do not appear to be candidates, since they similarly inhibit basal TSH levels after a time lag of several hours but again do not suppress pulsatile release of the hormone. In contrast, bolus injections of dexamethasone completely abolish pulsatile release of TSH for several hours despite a normal sensitivity of the pituitary to exogenous TRH, suggesting a hypothalamic action of the drug. The hypothesis that pulsatile TSH release might be governed by a pulsatile mode of a hypothalamic stimulator is supported by the observation that an infusion of nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker, which in vitro selectively inhibits the TRH effect on TSH but not prolactin secretion, exerts a comparable effect when it is infused in vivo.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on the preening of foraging wasps (Paravespula vulgaris) collecting sucrose solution at an artificial food source is described. The temperature has an influence on the number of preening movements performed per unit time (= rate of preening) as well as on the spatial distribution of the preening movements. The rate of preening as a function of the temperature is explained in a quantitative manner using a diagram, which corresponds to the disinhibition hypothesis for displacement activities. This also holds true for the honeybee. The degree of disinhibition of the preening tendency does not determine the spatial distribution of the preening movements.  相似文献

Biased sex ratios are expected to affect the conditions of the evolution of worker behaviour in malehaploid populations. In a subsocial, malehaploid species an association to female-biased brood sex ratios favours the evolution of worker behaviour. There are various reasons to expect such an association. The critical worker efficiency threshold required for worker behaviour to evolve is lower when looked at from the viewpoint of the mother than from that of the daughter. In this mother-daughter conflict, the mother can expect some help from her other offspring to resolve the conflict in her favour. In semisocial species the sex ratio biases have a less significant role and the worker behaviour can evolve more easily in malehaploid than in diploid populations. Furthermore, limited dispersal (due to the risks attached to it) is expected to favour worker behaviour in malehaploid but inbreeding in diploid populations. In addition to the genetic mechanisms that determine the critical worker efficiency threshold, it is essential to pay attention to those ecological factors that affect the actual worker efficiency in nature. Several such factors exist but it is not easy to associate them with the common occurrence of eusocial species in the Hymenoptera.  相似文献

Most theories on the function of play have focused on ultimate rather than proximate benefits. Play peaks during juvenility but, in some species, it is present in adulthood as well. In primates, social play and grooming often show a matched pattern because they bring individuals into close contact and favor social cohesion. In Pan, researchers have widely documented anticipation of competition at feeding time. Chimpanzees limit aggression over food by grooming (celebration), whereas bonobos use sociosexuality as a reassurance mechanism. We examined the function of play in the context of conflict prevention in the Apenheul bonobo colony. We analyzed the distribution of social play, grooming, and sexual contacts in periods around feeding and in a control condition. Adult-adult and adult-immature play frequencies were significantly higher during prefeeding than in any other condition, thus not supporting the commonly held view that social stress suppresses play. Further, there is a significant positive correlation between adult-adult play and rates of cofeeding. During feeding, adults engaged in their highest levels of sociosexual behaviors, whereas an increase in grooming rates occurred in prefeeding, though not significantly compared to the control rates. In conclusion, bonobos apparently cope with competition and social tension via 2 different mechanisms of conflict management: play to prevent tension, e.g., prefeeding, and sociosexual behaviors as appeasement and reassurance mechanisms once a tense situation emerges.  相似文献

Limited flexibility in behaviour gives rise to behavioural consistency, so that past behaviour is partially predictive of current behaviour. The consequences of limits to flexibility are investigated in a population in which pairs of individuals play a game of trust. The game can either be observed by others or not. Reputation is based on trustworthiness when observed and acts as a signal of behaviour in future interactions with others. Individuals use the reputation of partner in deciding whether to trust them, both when observed by others and when not observed. We explore the effects of costs of exhibiting a difference in behaviour between when observed and when not observed (i.e. a cost of flexibility). When costs are low, individuals do not attempt to signal that they will later be trustworthy: their signal should not be believed since it will always pay them to be untrustworthy if trusted. When costs are high, their local optimal behaviour automatically acts as an honest signal. At intermediate costs, individuals are very trustworthy when observed in order to convince others of their trustworthiness when unobserved. It is hypothesized that this type of strong signalling might occur in other settings.  相似文献

种群调节是种群生态学的一个核心问题。文章主要阐述了小型哺乳动物种群在其低数量期自我调节的4 种可能假说和相关的实验证据。其中, 有关衰老—母体效应假说近年已受到普遍重视, 而支持多态行为假说、社会生物学假说和远交假说的证据较少, 尚需更多的实验来加以验证。衰老—母体效应假说是在应激假说的基础上发展而成的。该假说认为, 母体质量会在整个高峰期的动物中发生改变, 并能够延续到衰减期和低数量期。在低数量期, 种群内的老年个体增多, 导致它们不能维持内分泌的自稳态, 可能通过影响后代的存活和生殖而维持低数量, 进而起到调节种群周期的作用。针对国际上研究的发展趋势, 我们还对未来的研究方向提出了一些建议。  相似文献

Plasma levels of tricyclic antidepressant drugs vary considerably between individuals receiving the same amount of drug. The bearing of this variation on the occurrence of subjective side effects was investigated in 40 psychiatric inpatients with depressive disorders. Plasma levels were determined before and during four weeks of treatment with nortriptyline 50 mg. three times a day and patients were rated for subjective side effects, the assessors being unaware of the plasma levels of the drug.Plasma levels varied widely between individual patients, but in any given patient the plasma level tended to be constant over a period of time. The side effects of nortriptyline diminished significantly with time and were in most cases absent during the fourth week of treatment. There was a significant positive correlation between plasma level of nortriptyline and subjective side effects.The steady-state plasma level of a drug which is metabolized is usually a more important determinant for its effect than dosage, since it reflects the amount of drug available for biological action. Very high plasma levels of nortriptyline should presumably be avoided, since there is no evidence that they are needed for therapeutic effect and they are potentially harmful.  相似文献

All else being equal, parthenogenetic females should produce as many surviving daughters as sexual couples produce daughters plus sons. Hence the resources spent on producing sons are a cost of sex and parthenogenetic females economize on sons. It has recently been shown that a small competitive advantage of sexual individuals can recoup this large reproductive disadvantage, while the adaptation behind the competitive advantage might differ from case to case. One hypothesis that has not yet been considered as a potential competitive advantage is that males could differentially harm parthenogenetic females, for example, through harassment, toxic seminal fluids, or infanticide. Harmful male functions result from the selection for males that maximise their fitness at the expense of females in the context of sexual conflict. Unless parthenogenetic lineages can maintain their resistance against harmful male functions, a competitive advantage for sex should be a by-product benefit of sexual conflict.
Mutations that make males harm parthenogenetic females worse than sexual ones, however, can be seen as evolutionary spite. The spiteful trait is not the production of costly sons, but the production of males that discriminate against parthenogenetic females. Spiteful behaviour can be positively selected, if it acts against negatively related victims. Sexual and parthenogenetic individuals within a population should usually be negatively related, because the genomes of the sexual individuals are bound together by recombination while those of parthenogenetic individuals will be identical except for divergence through mutation.
Some unusual cases of parthenogenesis are discussed in the light of this new hypothesis and an experimental approach for testing it is suggested.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the mechanical arrangement of costal (COS) and crural (CRU) diaphragms can be changed from parallel to series when direct or indirect transmission of tension occurs. Ratio of rib cage to abdominal displacement (RC/AB) resulting from separate COS and CRU stimulations were used to measure RC expanding action. Hyperinflation in six dogs caused RC/AB with COS and CRU stimulations to change progressively from 0.53 +/- 0.07 (SE) and 0.03 +/- 0.05 at functional residual capacity (FRC) to -0.48 +/- 0.08 and -0.46 +/- 0.05 at 68% inspiratory capacity, respectively. Liquid substitution of abdominal contents in six other dogs equalized abdominal pressure swings (delta Pab), without changing chest wall elastic properties or geometry, or costal RC/AB (0.35 +/- 0.07 before and 0.33 +/- 0.06 after) but caused crural RC/AB to change from 0.01 +/- 0.05 to 0.31 +/- 0.01. We conclude that hyperinflation changes fiber orientation, allowing direct transmission of tension between COS and CRU, which become linked mechanically in series (the diaphragm acts as a unit with RC deflating action); and equalization of delta Pab causes indirect transmission of tension between COS and CRU, which become linked in series (the diaphragm acts as a unit with RC inflating action).  相似文献
