Entostat is an electrostatically charged wax powder that can adhere strongly to insect cuticle, making it an ideal carrier to deliver pheromone for pheromone-based confusion techniques. We investigated the attractiveness of Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) males treated with pheromone-laden Entostat powder to naive conspecifics as well as mating behaviors of males after such treatment in a laboratory flight tunnel. Male moths exposed to Entostat containing 1% E,E-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol (codlemone) acquired and retained the largest amount of the powder and became more attractive as point sources to naive moths compared with those treated with powder containing 5 or 10% codlemone. All Entostat-exposed males remained as attractive as a 0.1-mg codlemone lure for up to 24 h in flight tunnel investigations. Male moth orientation to normally attractive sources of codlemone was completely disrupted directly after treatment with Entostat powder. Males' ability to orient to 0.1-mg lures recovered progressively over a 6-d postexposure interval; however, their responses never reached the levels observed with untreated control moths. Entostat-exposed moths retained detectable amounts of codlemone up to 4 d. Our laboratory flight tunnel results suggest that the mode of action of Entostat powder as an autodissemination control tactic may be due to creating both attractive false point sources after exposure to the powder as well as directly inhibiting contaminated males' capability to orient to pheromone.

The long-range, pheromone-mediated, flight behaviour of male moths under natural and mating disruption conditions was monitored by means of harmonic radar. Individual male turnip moths, Agrotis segetum (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), tagged with radar transponders, were released and tracked in plots with or without disruptive doses of sex pheromone. In addition, male attraction to pheromone-baited traps and mating of calling females in treated and untreated plots was investigated. High doses of a four-component pheromone blend reduced trap catch by 79% and mating of females by 62% when compared with control plots in pre-radar experiments. Surprisingly, this effect was not associated with any pronounced differences in flight behaviour of males between a treatment and a control plot as revealed by harmonic radar recordings. In total, 20 flight tracks from a control plot and 22 flight tracks from a treatment plot were analysed. Moths could be followed for up to 77 min, corresponding to a track length of 7350 m. Mean ground speed ranged from 0.7 m s–1 to 5.4 m s–1. There was a strong trend (P = 0.06) for a greater number of male orientations to traps from downwind in the control field compared to the treatment field. Many flight tracks were fragmented due to radar shadow. Advantages and constraints using harmonic radar to study the pheromone-mediated flight behaviour of nocturnal moths are discussed.

The vertical distribution of codling moth,Cydia pomonella (L.) within pheromone-treated and untreated apple and pear orchard canopies was determined using tethered virgin females, unbaited sticky traps, and blacklight observation of released moths. Mating of virgin females tethered at various heights in untreated orchard canopies increased with placement height from 1–4 m. Application of pheromone dispensers for mating disruption at 2 and 4 m above the ground greatly decreased mating. Greatest capture of males and females on unbaited sticky traps occurred at mid- and upper-canopy heights. Total capture of males and females in pheromone-treated plots was not statistically different than in untreated plots. The percentage of mated females captured on sticky traps did not vary with trap height or pheromone treatment. Released moths marked with flourescent powder and observed at dark with a blacklight indicated that moths are primarily distributed high in the canopy. However, males shifted to a position lower in the canopy when pheromone dispensers were placed 2.1 m above the ground. Results suggest that pheromone dispensers be placed in the upper canopy for optimal disruption of codling moth mating.

Mating has profound effects on animal physiology and behaviour, not only in females but also in males, which we show here for olfactory responses. In cotton leafworm moths, Spodoptera littoralis, odour-mediated attraction to sex pheromone and plant volatiles are modulated after mating, producing a behavioural response that matches the physiological condition of the male insect. Unmated males are attracted by upwind flight to sex pheromone released by calling females, as well as to volatiles of lilac flowers and green leaves of the host plant cotton, signalling adult food and mating sites, respectively. Mating temporarily abolishes male attraction to females and host plant odour, but does not diminish attraction to flowers. This behavioural modulation is correlated with a response modulation in the olfactory system, as shown by electro-physiological recordings from antennae and by functional imaging of the antennal lobe, using natural odours and synthetic compounds. An effect of mating on the olfactory responses to pheromone and cotton plant volatiles but not to lilac flowers indicates the presence of functionally independent neural circuits within the olfactory system. Our results indicate that these circuits interconnect and weigh perception of social and habitat odour signals to generate appropriate behavioural responses according to mating state.

Cydia molesta Busck (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a major pest of stone fruits and an increasingly important late season pest of apple, is predominately monitored by pheromone trapping of male moths. We investigated flight performance in relation to sex, age, and mating status using computer-linked flight mills, and also examined the relationship between female flight and reproduction. The crepuscular flight pattern of the experimental moths in relation to photointensity was very similar to that reported from field studies. Female moths significantly outperformed males in all measured flight parameters including total distance flown, distance of longest single flight, and velocity. The proportion of long-flying females (categorised as those completing an unbroken flight of greater than 1 km) was three to six times greater than that of males. Female flight performance was not related to mating status, but mated males displayed significantly greater flight than unmated males. The maximal flight period of mated females commenced on the third day after eclosion, following 30% egg deposition. Male flight was not significantly related to age. The data suggest that a limited proportion of the population, in particular females, may have the capacity to make inter-orchard flights. The limitations of monitoring C. molesta populations in apple orchards solely by pheromone trapping of males are discussed.

Studies were conducted with codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., to evaluate the mating status of male and female moths in apple, Malus domestica (Borkhausen), orchards treated with and without sex pheromone dispensers. Laboratory studies first examined the effect of multiple mating of male and female moths on female fecundity and egg fertility. Females that had mated three times had a significantly higher fecundity than singly mated moths. Sequential mating by male moths had no effect on the fecundity of female moths or egg fertility. However, male moth age did impact female fecundity, with significantly fewer eggs laid after mating with virgin 1- versus 3-d-old males. The mean size of the first spermatophore transferred by males was significantly larger than all subsequent spermatophores. Classifying spermatophores based on size was used in field sampling to categorize the mating status of the female's partner. The proportion of mated females with small spermatophores (partner had previously mated) was significantly higher in treated versus untreated orchards. The proportion of female moths caught in traps baited with pear ester that were virgin was low

Abstract. The ability of male spruce budworm moths, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), to orientate to and locate virgin female moths was investigated in a laboratory wind tunnel. When presented with two caged ‘target female’ moths, more than 99% of the male moths locked on and flew directly to the females. When confined for 3 h before release, downwind of a three-dimensional array of thirty-five evenly distributed female moths (a density of 40/m3), over 90% of the males still successfully oriented to one or another of the females, although not always to the target females. With an array of thirty-five septa containing either E-11-tetradecenyl acetate on E-11-tetradecenol there was no visible change in behaviour; >90% of the males flew directly to the two target females, which indicates that neither the acetate nor the alcohol has potential for mating disruption. An array of thirty-five septa containing a 955 blend of E- and Z-11-tetradecenal, the main components of the spruce budworm sex pheromone, significantly reduced the numbers of male moths able to locate the target females, and effects were concentration-dependent. The highest concentration, which gave a release rate similar to that of a calling female, produced the same level of disruption as the thirty-five females, but sensory fatigue became a factor in addition to ‘false trail following’. Lower concentrations were significantly less effective, with no evidence of sensory fatigue. At all concentrations significant numbers of males flew to the septa (false trail following), but when male moths were left uncaged in the tunnel for a further 3h, most eventually located the females. This suggests that false trail following alone will not prevent mating. The level of disruption was not improved by the addition of 2% tetradecanal to the 955 blend. Similar levels of disruption to the 955 blend were obtained with an 80:20 blend. A 5050 blend still caused a significant amount of false trail following, but less than the other blends. The ability of male spruce budworm to orientate to off-blend trails was enhanced if the males were first exposed to the natural, female-produced pheromone.

ABSTRACT. Male antennal sensitivity to female sex pheromone in Bruchidius atrolineatus was investigated electrophysiologically (EAG). The existence of receptors for this pheromone was shown in the antennae of males. (No such receptors exist in the antennae of females.) Young (age < 24h) males gave an EAG of amplitude 25–30% of the response of older males. Diapausing males several days old gave a much smaller response than active males of the same age.
EAGs were used to test the production/release of pheromone by groups of twenty females. Before they are 24 h old, active females do not produce/release the pheromone; older females release it at an almost constant rate. Sexually diapausing females do not produce and/or release the sex pheromone.
In sexually active females, mating inhibits pheromone release almost immediately. There is a correlation between reproductive status of the females (development of ovaries, oogenesis) and the production or release of the pheromone. A corresponding correlation also exists in the males whose antennae show a very low sensitivity when they are young or when they are in reproductive diapause.

Mating disruption with a high density of sex pheromone dispensers is a new strategy recently developed for the control of the moth Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Ecodian LB dispensers, made of low-cost biodegradable material, were formulated with 10 mg of (E,Z) -7,9-dodecadienyl acetate and placed at a rate of 1,600 dispensers per ha. Seasonal dispenser performances were studied using different methods. The female attractiveness disruption and the efficacy of the method were evaluated in the field. The release rates of field-aged Ecodian LB dispensers, measured directly by solid phase microextraction, was comparable with that of the standard monitoring lure after 50-60 d of field exposure and significantly lower beyond 60 d; however, at the end of the season, it was approximately 46 times higher than that of a calling L. botrana female. Electroantennographic recordings showed that dispensers of different field age strongly stimulated male antennae. In a wind tunnel test, dispensers elicited close-range approaches and direct source contacts irrespective of their age. In fields treated with Ecodian dispensers the attractiveness of traps lured with calling females and monitoring baits was significantly reduced. Our data suggest that Ecodian dispensers are active sources of pheromone throughout the season. The efficacy of Ecodian strategy for L. botrana control was comparable with standard mating disruption and curative insecticides.

An analysis is presented of the first harmonic radar studies of pheromone-plume locating flights of male Agrotis segetum moths over distances of up to 500 m. Upon release most moths flew in a direction having a downwind component. The first significant changes in flight orientations occur in the immediate vicinity of a pheromone source. Moths that were initially flying downwind change course and start flying crosswind whilst those that initially flew crosswind change course and start flying upwind. It is shown that such behaviour is consistent with the adoption of an effective plume-location strategy, and conditions are identified when downwind flights would be more advantageous than crosswind ones. Additionally, some of the complex flight patterns that can arise at later times are shown to be compatible with the adoption of an optimal biased scale-free (Lévy-flight) searching strategy. It is found that disruptive doses of sex pheromone can have a marked influence upon male moth flight patterns.

ABSTRACT. Both male and female Taeniopoda eques (Burmeister) emit a defensive secretion from their thoracic spiracles. The secretion from mature females was found to act as a sex pheromone, eliciting mating behaviour in males. Females became chemically attractive to males about 16–18 days after eclosion. The antennae are shown to be the site of pheromone reception in males. Feeding upon natural host plants was not a prerequisite for pheromone production.

The mating behaviour of the white-tailed zygaenid moth,Elcysma westwoodii, was observed. During the morning in the breeding season, males fly in search of females. It seems that females release sex pheromone and that olfaction is important in the search, although the moth is diurnal. In mating behaviour, males often gather to a female. Some factors which cause male gathering are considered: 1) high density of male moths, 2) males' tendency to be attracted by other fluttering males, and 3) females' tendency to refuse males.

The evolution of animal communication systems is an integral part of speciation. In moths, species specificity of the communication channel is largely a result of unique sex pheromone blends produced by females and corresponding specificity of male behavioral response. Insights into the process of speciation may result from studies of pheromone strains within a species in which reproductive isolation is not complete. Toward this end we investigated assortative mating based on female pheromone phenotypes and male response specificity between mutant and normal colonies of the cabbage looper moth, Trichoplusia ni. There was no evidence of assortative mating in small cages in which the density of moths was high. In larger cages with lower densities of moths, assortative mating was evident. In these larger cages, matings between normal males and normal females and mutant males and mutant females were more frequent than interstrain matings. Wind tunnel tests indicated that normal males responded preferentially to pheromone released by normal females, whereas mutant males did not discriminate between normal and mutant pheromone blends. In large field cages, pheromone traps baited with normal females caught equal numbers of mutant and normal males, while pheromone traps baited with mutant females caught primarily mutant males. The overall pattern of assortative mating could be explained primarily based on the normal males' preference for the pheromone blend released by normal females.

Abstract Indian meal moths, Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), have ears which are sensitive to high‐frequency calls produced by echolocating, insectivorous bats. The influence of artificially generated, high‐intensity, ultrasound signals (25 kHz, 106 dB SPL at 1 m distance) on different parameters involved in the odour‐mediated mating behaviour of this species and its potential use in population control was investigated. All moths flying towards olfactory cues in flight tunnel experiments reacted strongly to a 1 s ultrasound pulse by cessation of flight and falling out of the odour plume. The source contact proportion of both male moths orienting towards the female‐produced sex pheromone and of mated female moths orienting towards an oviposition cue was reduced by 40%, compared to unexposed moths. Calling females responded to the sound by retraction of the ovipositor or by falling to the ground. Long‐term exposure to repetitive pulses of ultrasound suppressed female calling by up to 27%. Furthermore, mating in plastic tents was disrupted by up to 58% in ultrasound‐treated tents using different sound regimens, compared to control tents. The results are discussed in relation to the potential use of ultrasound technology for the population control of pyralid stored product pests.

Abstract:  EntostatTM is an electrostatically charged wax powder that is used as a carrier particle in novel delivery systems for contaminating target insect pests with insecticides, biologicals or pheromones. Here, the adhesion of two forms of Entostat to the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) was examined, and the adhesion of Entostat to live and dead medflies was compared. From controlled contaminations of medflies, it was shown that live medflies acquired larger quantities of Entostat than dead medflies, which could be due to the electrostatic charge shown to be carried by live insects. Air-milled Entostat (7.59  μ m mean diameter) adhered in larger quantities to medflies than pestle and mortar-ground Entostat (9.17  μ m mean diameter). Exposing medflies to different quantities of Entostat affected the initially adhering quantity but did not alter the proportion of powder retained over time. Medfly males contaminated with air-milled Entostat were shown to transfer small quantities to females during mating. This documentation of secondary powder transfer underscores the potential for using slow-acting killing agents on the basis of this delivery system.

The flight and mating behaviour of the pea moth (Cydia nigricana) was studied at overwintering sites and in pea fields to see whether it could be exploited to provide early warning of adult immigration into pea crops. The field threshold temperature for take-off is 18 CC. Most flight activity-occurred in June and July between 16.00 and 18.00 B.S.T. with peak activity at 17.04 h. Moths were not caught in suction traps at heights above 0–4 m, but they can probably travel several km by fluttering above vegetation in winds of up to 10 km/h. Female moths produce a sex pheromone(s) highly attractive to males; ‘calling’ by females and mating occur during the period of maximum flight activity. Suction traps and egg counts detected the presence of moths in crops at about the same time. On average, sticky and water traps containing live virgin females as a lure caught respectively 17 and 130 times more males than suction traps and, on occasions, 25 and 300 times more; these attractive traps should detect the arrival of immigrants sooner than suction traps or egg counts. Extracts of virgin females dispensed from filter paper at doses of one and five female-equivalents (FE) attracted males rapidly but temporarily. Rubber dispensers with extracts of twenty FE remained attractive for 6 days. Several synthetic attractants were screened using doses of o-i mg on rubber dispensers in sticky traps. CYs-8-dodecenyl acetate and erans-8, frans-io-dodeca-dienol at doses of o-i mg were slightly attractive; the latter at doses of 1 -o mg was more attractive than twenty FE doses of extract and could be used for experimental monitoring of pea moth until its own synthetic sex pheromone(s) is available.

Summary Sexuals ofFormica lugubris fly to mating places, where females attract males by using a sex pheromone. Females collected on the nest surface before departing on a mating flight are much less attractive than those collected on the mating place after the mating flight, suggesting that the mating flight triggers the release of the sex pheromone. Olfactory cues are essential for males to locate females while they patrol. Males probably use visual cues to locate females once they have alighted nearby them. Males are also attracted by aggregations of other males on the ground, probably because one or several females are likely to be close to male aggregations.
