Synopsis Migration is a common phenomenon in marine fishes but the consequences with respect to life history variation have been little
explored. Migration both influences the evolution of other traits and is contigent upon the evolution of other behavioural
and demographic characters. The interaction between such factors is illustrated by considering the relationship between the
cost of migration in relation to fecundity and the advantages and disadvantages of schooling, a phenomenon hypothesized to
favour the evolution of migration. These analyses predict that migratory species will be relatively large, mature late and
at a relatively large size and grow relatively fast. Data from north temperate marine fish support these predictions. 相似文献

Numerous studies have examined the effect of urbanization on species richness and most studies implicate urbanization as the major cause of biodiversity loss. However, no study has identified an explicit connection between urbanization and biodiversity loss as the impact of urbanization is typically inferred indirectly by comparing species diversity along urban-rural gradients at a single time point. A different approach is to focus on the temporal rather than the spatial aspect and perform "before and after" studies where species diversity is cataloged over time in the same sites. The current study examined changes in ant abundance and diversity associated with the conversion of natural habitats into urban habitats. Ant abundance and diversity were tracked in forested sites that became urbanized through construction and were examined at 3 time points - before, during, and after construction. On average, 4.3±1.2 unique species were detected in undisturbed plots prior to construction. Ant diversity decreased to 0.7±0.8 species in plots undergoing construction and 1.5±1.1 species in plots 1 year after construction was completed. With regard to species richness, urbanization resulted in the permanent loss of 17 of the 20 species initially present in the study plots. Recovery was slow and only 3 species were present right after construction was completed and 4 species were present 1 year after construction was completed. The second objective examined ant fauna recovery in developed residential lots based on time since construction, neighboring habitat quality, pesticide inputs, and the presence of invasive ants. Ant diversity was positively correlated with factors that promoted ecological recovery and negatively correlated with factors that promoted ecological degradation. Taken together, these results address a critical gap in our knowledge by characterizing the short- and long-term the effects of urbanization on the loss of ant biodiversity. 相似文献

In organisms encountering predictable environments, fixed development is expected, whereas in organisms that cannot predict their future environment, phenotypic plasticity would be optimal to increase local adaptation. To test this prediction we experimentally compared phenotypic plasticity in two rocky-shore snail species; Littorina saxatilis releasing miniature snails on the shore, and Littorina littorea releasing drifting larvae settling on various shores, expecting L. littorea to show more phenotypic plasticity than L. saxatilis. We compared magnitude and direction of vectors of phenotypic difference in juvenile shell traits after 3 months exposure to different stimuli simulating sheltered and crab-rich shores, or wave-exposed and crab-free shores. Both species showed similar direction and magnitude of vectors of phenotypic difference with minor differences only between ecotypes of the nondispersing species, indicating that plasticity is an evolving trait in L. saxatilis. The lack of a strong plastic response in L. littorea might be explained by limits rather than costs to plasticity. 相似文献

Anthropogenic activities are having devastating impacts on marine systems with numerous knock-on effects on trophic functioning, species interactions and an accelerated loss of biodiversity. Establishing conservation areas can not only protect biodiversity, but also confer resilience against changes to coral reefs and their inhabitants. Planning for protection and conservation in marine systems is complex, but usually focuses on maintaining levels of biodiversity and protecting special and unique landscape features while avoiding negative impacts to socio-economic benefits. Conversely, the integration of evolutionary processes that have shaped extant species assemblages is rarely taken into account. However, it is as important to protect processes as it is to protect patterns for maintaining the evolutionary trajectories of populations and species. This review focuses on different approaches for integrating genetic analyses, such as phylogenetic diversity, phylogeography and the delineation of management units, temporal and spatial monitoring of genetic diversity and quantification of adaptive variation for protecting evolutionary resilience, into marine spatial planning, specifically for coral reef fishes. Many of these concepts are not yet readily applied to coral reef fish studies, but this synthesis highlights their potential and the importance of including historical processes into systematic biodiversity planning for conserving not only extant, but also future, biodiversity and its evolutionary potential. 相似文献

In natural populations, dispersal tends to be limited so that individuals are in local competition with their neighbours. As a consequence, most behaviours tend to have a social component, e.g. they can be selfish, spiteful, cooperative or altruistic as usually considered in social evolutionary theory. How social behaviours translate into fitness costs and benefits depends considerably on life-history features, as well as on local demographic and ecological conditions. Over the last four decades, evolutionists have been able to explore many of the consequences of these factors for the evolution of social behaviours. In this paper, we first recall the main theoretical concepts required to understand social evolution. We then discuss how life history, demography and ecology promote or inhibit the evolution of helping behaviours, but the arguments developed for helping can be extended to essentially any social trait. The analysis suggests that, on a theoretical level, it is possible to contrast three critical benefit-to-cost ratios beyond which costly helping is selected for (three quantitative rules for the evolution of altruism). But comparison between theoretical results and empirical data has always been difficult in the literature, partly because of the perennial question of the scale at which relatedness should be measured under localized dispersal. We then provide three answers to this question. 相似文献

Life history theory predicts that trade-offs between growth and reproduction should be dictated by a population's mortality schedule. We tested this prediction with Arabis fecunda, a short-lived perennial that occurs in many different habitats in southwest Montana. Individuals produce either or both axillary or terminal inflorescences. Axillary-flowering plants are usually iteroparous and have smaller reproductive bouts, while terminal-flowering plants have larger reproductive bouts, and tend to be semelparous. We recorded size and fecundity of A. fecunda individuals from 1989 to 1993 in three different habitats. There was great variation in demographic and life history traits among the populations. A wide range of life history strategies among populations of A. fecunda is achieved through different proportions of axillary- and terminal-flowering plants. Arabis fecunda demonstrated a lower recruitment rate, higher survivorship, slower growth, and lower annual fecundity at the low-elevation site compared to the high-elevation site. At the low-elevation site population size was more stable, and elasticity analysis of matrix projection models indicated that adult survivorship was the most important demographic parameter contributing to population growth. This association of life history characters conforms to theoretical predictions. 相似文献

The demography and abundance of Collembola in relation to a gradient of increasingly isolated tussocks of Carex ursina were investigated near Ny-Alesund, Svalbard The study area was divided into three zones according to tussock density Ten tussocks were sampled in each zone In addition, samples were taken between tussocks, which consisted of ground covered with a layer of cyanobacteria A total of ten Collembola species were found, five of which were chosen for further studies The Carex tussocks were the preferred habitat for the majority of these species Only one species, Hypogastrura viatica, was found regularly between tussocks, although at low density The gradient in tussock distribution was probably an important factor in determining the distribution, abundance and the underlying demographic processes of most species This was indicated by an increase in demographic heterogeneity with patch isolation The different species were affected differently, however Whereas one species appeared to be unaffected by the gradient (H viatica), two species (H longispina) and (Folsomia sexoculata) were somewhat surprisingly found to have their highest density where tussocks were furthest apart Factors other than the spatial configuration of the habitat are probably important in determining the distribution of these two species, indicated by a positive correlation at tussock level between them In accordance with general hypotheses on the effect of patchiness on population dynamics the remaining two species, F quadrioculata and Onvchiurus groenlandicus, occurred in very low numbers or not at all, respectively, in the zone where tussocks were furthest apart Their response is probably dependent on their ability to successfully colonise isolated tussocks We predict that different species specific demographic strategies, and in particular dispersal rates may account for the observed patterns 相似文献

At present, there are 43 self-sustaining fish species in Norwegian fresh waters, 11 (26%) of which are non-native, representing four families (Salmonidae, Cyprinidae, Centrarchidae and Ictaluridae). Human-mediated fish introductions probably began in the 15th century with common carp Cyprinus carpio, but most have occurred between the late 1800s and late 1900s. The number of known established populations varies from one (goldfish Carassius auratus ) to nearly 250 (tench Tinca tinca ). Dispersal risk is also highest with tench, which is being spread by anglers for its appeal as a trophy fish. Intentional introductions to improve amenity angling have been part of fisheries management programmes ( e.g. brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis ), so this appears to be an increasingly common introduction vector despite the prohibition under legislation of introducing any species of non-native fishes. Some introduced species, such as brook trout, have declined in abundance and number of populations as the quality of acidified waters has been restored, being replaced by native brown trout Salmo trutta . Further range expansion by some species ( e.g. common carp, goldfish and pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus ) is probably restricted by current climatic conditions. 相似文献

Global patterns in marine dispersal estimates: the influence of geography, taxonomic category and life history 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

We examine estimates of dispersal in a broad range of marine species through an analysis of published values, and evaluate how well these values represent global patterns through a comparison with correlates of dispersal. Our analysis indicates a historical focus in dispersal studies on low-dispersal/low-latitude species, and we hypothesize that these studies are not generally applicable and representative of global patterns. Large-scale patterns in dispersal were examined using a database of correlates of dispersal such as planktonic larval duration (PLD, 318 species) and genetic differentiation (FST, 246 species). We observed significant differences in FST (p<0.001) and PLD (p<0.001) between taxonomic groups (e.g. fishes, cnidarians, etc.). Within marine fishes (more than 50% of datasets), the prevalence of demersal eggs was negatively associated with PLD (R2=0.80, p<0.001) and positively associated with genetic structure (R2=0.74, p<0.001). Furthermore, dispersal within marine fishes (i.e. PLD and FST) increased with latitude, adult body size and water depth. Of these variables, multiple regression identified latitude and body size as persistent predictors across taxonomic levels. These global patterns of dispersal represent a first step towards understanding and predicting species-level and regional differences in dispersal, and will be improved as more comprehensive data become available. 相似文献

An uncertain life: demography in random environments 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
S Tuljapurkar 《Theoretical population biology》1989,35(3):227-294
This paper concisely reviews the demography of populations with random vital rates, highlights examples and techniques which yield insight into population dynamics, summarizes the state of significant applications of the theory, and points to open problems. The central picture in this theory is of a time-varying but statistically stationary equilibrium for population, sharply distinct from the notions of classical demography. The deepest biological insights from the theory reveal the temporal structure of life histories to be a rich arena for natural selection. 相似文献

We provide evidence of reproductive activities of nine Asian freshwater fish species belonging to three families in Atlantic Forest creeks located in the Paraíba do Sul River basin, southeastern Brazil, an area rich in endemic and endangered fish fauna. These non-native fishes were introduced into the natural systems by both accidental and intentional releases from ornamental fish farms in the region. Adults of all species were found reproducing during virtually all year round and showed fractionated spawning. Imature individuals (young-of-the-year and juveniles) were also frequent in the five sites. Most of the total sex ratios were close to 1:1. The frequent releases, warm water temperature, marginal vegetation providing food, protection and spawning sites, and the low richness of native fishes in these creeks can facilitate the establishment process of all species. The creeks can also act as dispersing agents of non-native fishes after flash floods, leading to biotic homogenization or differentiation in the local fish community, competition with native fishes, and parasite dissemination. Given the flourishing aquaculture activity in the area, it is expected that these and other non-native species cause extensive modifications in the regional ichthyofauna. 相似文献

A metric of biodiversity is proposed that combines three of its key components: abundance, phylogeny, and ecological function. This metric is an expansion of the current abundance‐based metric that uses Hill numbers, the effective number of types in a sample if all types had the same mean proportional abundance. I define analogous proportional measures of phylogenetic divergence and functional distinctiveness. Phylogenetic divergence is measured as the sum of the proportional share of each species of a given branch of a phylogeny. Functional distinctiveness can be measured in two ways, as the proportional share of each species of a specified ecological function, or as the relative distance of each species based on functional trait values. Because all three aspects of biodiversity are measured in the same fashion (relative proportions) in similar units (effective numbers of species), an integrated metric can be defined. The combined metric provides understanding of covariation among the components and how management for one component may trade off against others. The metric can be partitioned into components of richness and evenness, and into subsets and variation among subsets, all of which can be related through a simple multiplicative framework. This metric is a complement to, rather than a replacement of, current metrics of phylogenetic and functional diversity. More work is needed to link this new metric to ecological theory, determine its error structure, and devise methods for its effective assessment. 相似文献

We examined climatic effects on the geographic distribution and abundance of 34 dominant oceanic fishes in the southern California region using larval fish data collected from the 50‐year long California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) surveys. The oceanic species responses to environmental changes in their geographic distributions were not very pronounced, perhaps because they lived in the deep layer where temperature change was relatively small or because the environmental variation of the CalCOFI region is not strong enough (with an average temperature gradient of the upper 100 m around 91 km °C?1). Among the 34 taxa, 16 showed a significant distributional shift (median latitude or boundaries) in relation to environmental variables, and eight species significantly shifted their geographic distribution from the 1951–1976 cold period to the 1977–1998 warm period. Interestingly, the vertically migrating taxa more often showed a significant response to environmental variables than the nonmigrating mesopelagic taxa, reflecting the more significant increase in heat content of the upper ocean (<200 m), compared with the deeper zone (300–500 m) where the mesopelagic fishes typically remain. Climate change has significant effects on the abundances of oceanic fishes. Twenty‐four taxa exhibited a significant change in abundance in relation to environmental variables, and 25 taxa, including both warm and cold‐water taxa, showed a significant increase in abundance from the cold to warm period. Analysis of physical data indicated that the surface‐layer (20–200 m) warmed significantly and the isotherms approached shoreward from the cold to the warm period. We further show that the spatial distribution of coastal–neritic fish retreated shoreward and oceanic fish extended shoreward from the cold to warm period. Our results suggest intensified stratification of the southern California region during the warm period may create a suitable habitat for the oceanic species. Moreover, such an unfavorable condition (e.g. changes in food habitat) for coastal–neritic species might result in competitive release for the oceanic fishes to flourish. 相似文献

The population dynamics ofTaraxacum serotinum (Waldst. etKit.)Poir. were studied in two stands of a loess grassland community (Salvio-Festucetum rupicolae). The two stands differed in their previous management: one of them had been grazed by sheep and the other had been mown before the start of the study. The fate of every rosette ofTaraxacum was followed in an area of 75 m2 in each stand for nine years. The demographic characteristics of the populations differed in the two habitats. In the formerly mown site, the population size decreased considerably due to an increase in mortality after the cessation of mowing. In contrast, the population size in the formerly grazed site showed only a slight decrease with lower mortality rates. In both populations it was mostly the new offspring which died. Comparing the year-to-year demographic characterstics there were significant differences between the two sites in almost every year. However, if the same characteristics for the whole nine-year period were considered, there were no differences. The population growth rates calculated from the year-to-year transition matrices were almost always under the equilibrium value of 1, but the deviation was not significant. An elasticity analysis indicated that the greater contribution to the variability of population growth in both populations comes from those plants that remain in the same (adult) stage from year to year. 相似文献

Patterns of variation in life history among South American fishes in seasonal environments 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Kirk O. Winemiller 《Oecologia》1989,81(2):225-241
Summary Ten traits related to life history theory were measured or estimated for 71 freshwater fish species from two locations in the Venezuelan llanos. Multivariate statistics and cluster analysis revealed three basic endpoint patterns bounding a two-dimensional continuum. A suite of attributes associated with parental care and aseasonal reproduction appeared to correspond to an equilibrium strategy. A second group of small fishes was distinguished by traits associated with rapid colonizing ability: early maturation, continuous reproduction, and small clutches. The third basic pattern was associated with synchronized reproduction during the early wet season, high fecundity, absence of parental care, and breeding migrations. A subset of mostly small fishes exhibiting little or no parental care, small clutches, and two to four month reproductive seasons was intermediate between the opportunistic (rapidly colonizing) and seasonal strategies. All ten life history variables showed significant effects of phylogeny. The cluster of species corresponding to the equilibrium group was dominated by siluriform fishes and perciforms of the Cichlidae. The opportunistic cluster was dominated by cyprinodontiform and characiform fishes, whereas the seasonal cluster contained primarily characiform and siluriform fishes. Seven of nine traits were significantly correlated with body length. The three reproductive patterns are interpreted as being adaptative with respect to relative intensity and predictability of temporal and spatial variation in abiotic environmental parameters, food availability, and predation pressure. 相似文献

The composition and dynamics of ecosystems are influenced by insects serving as providers, eliminators and facilitators across multiple trophic levels. The role of insects in ecosystems may be documented by manipulative field studies involving exclusion techniques applied to species that are decomposers, herbivores or predators. The presence or absence of insects is important to the distribution, abundance and diversity of plants and vertebrates, which typically are the premier species in conservation efforts. Thus, policy-making in environmental management programmes should consider the role of insects in ecosystems when establishing objectives and procedures for species conservation and biodiversity. 相似文献

Comparative analysis of phylogenetic and fishing effects in life history patterns of teleost fishes 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

The effects of fishing on life history traits and life history strategies of teleost fishes are analysed by a new comparative method that splits traits into an allometric part (size effect), an autoregressive phylogenetic component, and an environmental component (fishing effect). Both intra- and inter-specific variation of age and size at maturity, fecundity, adult size and egg size are analysed by comparing 84 populations of 49 species submitted to various fishing pressures. Two axes of life history diversification are found among teleosts. One is the well-known slow-fast continuum separating short-lived and early maturing species (like Clupeiformes) from longer-lived species that mature late relative to their size and spawn larger eggs (like salmonids or Scorpaeniformes). An additional strategy involves the schedule of resource allocation to growth and reproduction. Indeterminate growth allows higher teleosts (e.g. Gadiformes) to reach a large size while maturing early and laying small eggs. Increasing fishing pressure decreases age at maturity and egg size, and increases fecundity at maturity, the slope of the fecundity-length relationship and relative size at maturity. These compensations for higher adult mortality differ among life history strategies. Indeterminate growth is associated with a greater flexibility in resource allocation to growth and reproduction that facilitates greater resilience to fishing mortality. 相似文献
