Shallow lakes often alternate between two possible states: one clear with submerged macrophytes, and another one turbid, dominated by phytoplankton. A third type of shallow lakes, the inorganic turbid, result from high contents of suspended inorganic material, and is characterized by low phytoplankton biomass and macrophytes absence. In our survey, the structure and photosynthetic properties (based on 14C method) of phytoplankton were related to environmental conditions in these three types of lakes in the Pampa Plain. The underwater light climate was characterized. Clear-vegetated lakes were more transparent (K d 4.5–7.7 m−1), had high DOC concentrations (>45 mg l−1), low phytoplankton Chl a (1.6–2.7 μg l−1) dominated by nanoflagellates. Phytoplankton productivity and photosynthetic efficiency (α ~ 0.03 mgC mgChla −1 h−1 W−1 m2) were relatively low. Inorganic-turbid lakes showed highest K d values (59.8–61.4 m−1), lowest phytoplankton densities (dominated by Bacillariophyta), and Chl a ranged from 14.6 to 18.3 μg l−1. Phytoplankton-turbid lakes showed, in general, high K d (4.9–58.5 m−1) due to their high phytoplankton abundances. These lakes exhibited the highest Chl a values (14.2–125.7 μg l−1), and the highest productivities and efficiencies (maximum 0.56 mgC mgChla −1 h−1 W−1 m2). Autotrophic picoplankton abundance, dominated by ficocianine-rich picocyanobacteria, differed among the shallow lakes independently of their type (0.086 × 105–41.7 × 105 cells ml−1). This article provides a complete characterization of phytoplankton structure (all size fractions), and primary production of the three types of lakes from the Pampa Plain, one of the richest areas in shallow lakes from South America.  The autotrophic ciliate Mesodinium rubrum Lohmann was observed during winter and spring in saline lakes ranging in salinity from 2 to 78‰ in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica. The ciliate remained active during winter, and contained chlorophyll even though the level of light available for photosynthesis was minimal. No evidence of encystment as a means of survival during winter was observed. A seasonal study in one of the lakes, Ace Lake, revealed that M. rubrum was present throughout the year at abundances ranging from 1×104 to 3.5×105 cells l-1. During the winter period, when little light penetrated the lake’s ice cover, cells were most common immediately under the ice at 2 m, where cell numbers were typically 8×104 cells l-1. Substantial halophilic organisms have been found in 100–200‰ salinities. These ranges represent a highly specialized halophilic environment to which only a few halotolerant species have adapted. Recent studies have underlined the existence of diverse obligately halophilic protozoa in the salinity ranges of 100–200‰. The ranges of salinity under which these organisms can grow have been examined to some extent, but the balance of specific ions that will support growth has not been investigated. The heterotrophic nanoflagellate Halocafeteria, the type strain of which grows optimally at 150‰ salinity and 35°C, is a commonly encountered obligate halophile found in very hypersaline environments. These extreme environments can vary in their Mg:Ca ratios (i.e. weight ratios) and sulfate concentrations. To examine growth response of Halocafeteria to the different chemical compositions, densities of Halocafeteria seosinensis strain EHF34 were monitored in seven different ion composition media for 9 days at 1- to 2-day intervals (at 150‰ salinity and 35°C, with no prey limitation). Halocafeteria does not grow at Mg:Ca ratios of 35 and 100 and at high sulfate concentrations of 11.6 and 31.6 g l−1. It grows well in 0.6 g l−1 sulfate media at Mg:Ca ratios of 2, 10 or 35, but not 100. The present study demonstrates that the growth of the obligate halophile Halocafeteria can be affected by different ion compositions in hypersaline environments. Therefore, Halocafeteria may not be ubiquitous in hypersaline environments due to its ionic requirements.  相似文献

Samples collected from Lake Fryxell, southern Victoria Land, Antarctica in January 1992 and 1994 were analysed for the abundance of bacterioplankton and the diversity and abundance of protistan plankton. At the times of sampling, 14 ciliate species and 10 species of autotrophic flagellate were recorded. The samples contained two species of rotifer (Philodina spp.), which formed the first record of planktonic metazoans in the Dry Valley lakes of this region of Antarctica. Bacterial concentrations ranged between 1.0 and 3.8×108 l-1 in the upper oxic waters increasing to 20×108 l-1 in the anoxic waters. Heterotrophic flagellates decreased in abundance down the oxygenated water column, disappearing completely at 9 m, and ranged between 0.28 and 7.39×105 l-1 in abundance. Autotrophic flagellates were much more abundant exhibiting a number of distinct peaks down the water column (1.89–25.3×108 l-1). The ciliated protozoa were very abundant (up to 7720 l-1) in relation to flagellate and bacterial numbers, typical of oligotrophic lakes world-wide. The distribution of the protistan plankton showed marked zonation, probably in response to the differing salinity and temperature gradients in the water column. Possible trophic interactions are discussed and comparisons with other continental Antarctic lakes made. Received: 29 November 1995/Accepted: 18 February 1996  相似文献

A survey of 11 sites covering three large (>10 km long, 6 sites) playa lakes and four pans (<1 km2, 5 sites) of the Yarra Yarra salt lake system in the Northern Agricultural Region of Western Australia commenced in 2001. These salt lakes are shallow and ephemeral, with inundation being more regular following winter rainfall, but summer inundation also occurred in 2001. Salinity was generally higher in playas (156–368 g l−1) than pans (30–284 g l−1), but salinity responded noticeably to heavy rainfall events, especially in pans. pH values in the playa lakes (6.68–7.82) were less variable than in the pans (6.81–8.08). The range of dissolved oxygen concentrations was greater in pans (3.7–14.4 mg l−1) than in playas (3.9–8.2 mg l−1). Cationic concentrations generally followed the pattern of sea water cation dominance. Benthic microbial communities comprised either cohesive to loosely mucilaginous mats, or thin films of diatoms. Five genera of diatom and two species of filamentous cyanobacteria were recorded. Guest Editor: John M. Melack Saline Waters and their Biota  相似文献

Abstract Seasonal variation in bacterioplankton abundance, biomass, and bacterioplankton production was studied over eight years in hypertrophic Lake S?byg?rd. Biologically, the lake is highly variable; this is due mainly to large interannual variation in fish recruitment. Bacterioplankton production was low during winter, typically 1–3 × 107 cells l−1 h−1, and high during summer, albeit greatly fluctuating with maximum rates typically ranging from 60 to 90 × 107 cells l−1 h−1 (or 0.4 to 0.6 mg C l−1 day−1). Less pronounced variations were found in bacterioplankton abundance, which typically ranged from 3–8 × 109 cells l−1 in winter to 15–30 × 109 cells l−1 during summer. The specific growth rate of bacterioplankton varied from 0.02–0.2 d−1 in winter to 0.5–2.3 day−1 during summer. Interpolated mean bacterioplankton production, in terms of carbon, ranged from 0.08 to 0.16 mg C l−1 day−1, corresponding to 1.6–5.5% of the phytoplankton production, while biomass ranged from 0.28 to 0.36 mg C l−1, corresponding to 1.9–4.6% of the phytoplankton biomass. We conducted regression analysis, relating the bacterioplankton variables to a number of environmental variables, and evaluated the interannual parameter variability. Chlorophyll a and phytoplankton production contributed less to the variation in the bacterioplankton variables than in most previous analyses using data from less eutrophic systems. We suggest that the proportion of phytoplankton production that is channelized through bacterioplankton in lakes decreases with increasing trophic state and decreasing mean depth. This probably reflects a concurrent increase in fish predation on macrozooplankton and loss by sedimentation. An important part of the residual variation in the equations hitherto proposed in the literature could be explained by variation in macrozooplankton biomass and pH > 10.2. A negative effect of high pH on bacterioplankton production was confirmed by laboratory experiments. The impact of different zooplankton varies considerably, with Daphnia seeming to have a negative impact on bacterioplankton abundance and, thereby, indirectly on bacterioplankton production, while Bosmina, rotifers, and cyclopoid copepods seem to stimulate both abundance and production. Bosmina apparently also stimulate the bacterioplankton specific growth rate. Received: 8 February 1996; Accepted: 16 July 1996  相似文献

A thermoacidophilic elemental sulfur and chalcopyrite oxidizing enrichment culture VS2 was obtained from hot spring run-off sediments of an underground mine. It contained only archaeal species, namely a Sulfolobus metallicus-related organism (96% similarity in partial 16S rRNA gene) and Thermoplasma acidophilum (98% similarity in partial 16S rRNA gene). The VS2 culture grew in a temperature range of 35–76°C. Sulfur oxidation by VS2 was optimal at 70°C, with the highest oxidation rate being 99 mg S0 l−1 day−1. At 50°C, the highest sulfur oxidation rate was 89 mg l−1 day−1 (in the presence of 5 g Cl l−1). Sulfur oxidation was not significantly affected by 0.02–0.1 g l−1 yeast extract or saline water (total salinity of 0.6 M) that simulated mine water at field application sites with availability of only saline water. Chloride ions at a concentration above 10 g l−1 inhibited sulfur oxidation. Both granular and powdered forms of sulfur were bioavailable, but the oxidation rate of granular sulfur was less than 50% of the powdered form. Chalcopyrite concentrate oxidation (1% w/v) by the VS2 resulted in a 90% Cu yield in 30 days.  相似文献

From November 1992 to February 1995 a quantitative and qualitative phytoplankton study was conducted at a permanent station (Kerfix) southwest off the Kerguelen Islands, in the vicinity of the Polar Front (50°40′S–68°25′E). Phytoplankton populations are low in this area both during summers and winters. They consist, in order of decreasing cell abundance, of pico- and nanoflagellates (1.5–20 μm), coccolithophorids (<10 μm), diatoms (5–80 μm) and dinoflagellates (6–60 μm). Flagellates form the dominant group throughout the year and attain the highest summer average of 3.0 × 105 cells l−1. Next in abundance year-round are coccolithophorids with the dominant Emiliania huxleyi (highest summer 1992 average 1.9 × 105 cells l−1), diatoms (summer 1992 average 1.0 × 105 cells l−1) and dinoflagellates (average 3.8 × 104 cells l−1). Winter mean numbers of flagellates and picoplankton do not exceed 8.4 × 104 cells l−1; those of the three remaining algal groups together attain 2 × 104 cells l−1. Summer peaks of diatoms and dinoflagellates are mainly due to the larger size species (>20 μm). The latter group contributes most to the total cell carbon biomass throughout the year. Dominant diatoms during summer seasons include: Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Chaetoceros dichaeta, C. atlanticus, Pseudonitzschia heimii, and P. barkleyi/lineola. This diatom dominance structure changes from summer to summer with only F. kerguelensis and T. nitzschioides retaining their first and second positions. Any one of the co-dominant species might be absent during some summer period. The variable diatom community structure may be due to southward meandering of the Polar Front bringing “warmer” species from the north, and to the mixing of the water masses in this area. The entire community structure characterized both during summer and winters by the dominance of flagellates can be related to deep mixing (ca. 40–200 m) of the water column as the probable controlling factor. In this study, four real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer sets were developed for the 16S rRNA genes of specific ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) found in activated sludge of sewage treatment systems. The primer sets target two of several sequence types of the Nitrosomonas oligotropha cluster, members within the Nitrosomonas communis cluster, and all members of the Nitrosomonas europaeaNitrosococcus mobilis cluster. The detection limit of each primer set was in the range of 3×101–6×102 genes reaction−1. Reliable quantification of the target AOB DNA was obtained when the target AOB DNA comprised more than 0.1% of total AOB DNA in the sample. The application of the primer sets to samples taken from five sewage treatment systems showed that, in all systems, the majority of the AOB population was comprised of one sequence type of the N. oligotropha cluster (3.9±1.5×109–1.7±0.5×1010 cell l−1) and, in most systems, followed by members within the N. communis cluster (2.8±0.3×109–1.0±0.1×1010 cell l−1) or/and another sequence type of the N. oligotropha cluster (1.5±0.6×108–5.5±0.5×108 cell l−1). N. europaeaN. mobilis cluster arose solely in small numbers (4.9±0.8×108 cell l−1) in one system. Real-time PCR-amplified products obtained from genomic DNA extracted from samples were verified using clone library, and it revealed that only the target AOB DNA were PCR amplified, without amplification of the nontarget sequences.  相似文献

The combined effect of temperature, food level and the presence of an invertebrate predator on the body size of the rotifer Brachionus havanaensis were tested in this study. B. havanaensis was cultured at 15, 20, and 25°C under three different Chlorella vulgaris levels (0.5 × 106, 1.0 × 106 and 2.0 × 106 cells ml−1) in the presence and in the absence of Asplanchna girodi. For each treatment we maintained three replicates and constant (0.4 ind ml−1) population density of B. havanaensis. In treatments containing A. girodi, the predator was separated from the prey by a mesh (pore size 50 μm). On the last day of the experiment, a portion of the B. havanaensis population was sampled for several morphometric measurements (adult lorica length, width, posterior spine length, body volume, and the egg volume). Size measurements were done by drawing the specimens using a calibrated camera lucida. Statistically significant impact of temperature as well as the predator’s presence was observed on the lorica length, posterior spine, and egg volume of B. havanaensis. The interactions of food × temperature, or predator′s presence × food × temperature were non-significant (P > 0.05) for lorica length, spine length, body volume, and egg volume. Regardless of the type of treatment, there was a direct positive correlation between lorica length and width. Egg volume was linearly related to the adult size. Notably long posterior spines were observed in treatments containing the presence of A. girodi. Guest editors: S. S. S. Sarma, R. D. Gulati, R. L. Wallace, S. Nandini, H. J. Dumont & R. Ciliate and bacterial densities and their link with eutrophication were studied in fourteen shallow lakes in northwest Spain. Total phosphorus (TP) in these lakes varied between 30 μg l−1 and 925 μg l−1 and chlorophyll a concentration (chla) between 0.5 μg l−1 and 107 μg l−1. Bacterial abundance ranged from 1 × 106 to 14 × 106 cells ml−1, while ciliate abundance ranged from 0.6 cells ml−1 to 229 cells ml−1. Lakes were classified into three trophic types from their TP and chla concentrations. Bacterial abundance was significantly correlated with trophic type, as well as with TP and with chla separately, whereas ciliate abundance was only correlated with chla. No significant relationship could be established between bacterial and ciliate abundance across the trophic gradient. A general pattern was observed in the ratios of bacterial abundance to TP and chla concentrations, of decreasing ratios with increases in the nutrient loading. This pattern was not found for ciliates. The dominant zooplankton group in 13 of the 14 lakes studied was Rotifera, which accounted for a mean of 71% of total zooplankton abundance (41% of zooplankton biomass). The positive correlation between bacteria and ciliates with this group, and the absence of any relationship with Cladocera suggest that top down control by cladocerans was weaker in our lakes than previously shown in northern European shallow lakes. Rotifers could be important predators of bacteria in the high-nutrient lakes of our study. Higher slopes of regressions on bacterial abundance towards the hypertrophic range indicate that top-down control was weaker in our lakes than in northern European shallow lakes.  相似文献

Outbreak of blue-green algal blooms, with associated unsightly scum and unpleasant odor, occurs frequently in eutrophic lakes. We conducted feeding experiments to study ingestion and digestion of Microcystis aeruginosa by tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under laboratory conditions and field testing to reduce Microcystis blooms by stocking tilapia in Lake Yuehu and other eutrophic waters in Ningbo, China between 2000 and 2003. Our results show that tilapia was capable of ingesting and digesting a large quantity of Microcystis. Digestion efficiency ranged from 58.6 to 78.1% at water temperature of 25 °C. Ingestion rate increased with increasing fish weight and water temperature. Intensive blooms occurred in Lake Yuehu in both 1999 and 2000. The lake was stocked with silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead (Aristichthys nobilis) and a freshwater mussel (Hyriopsis cumingii) at a total biomass of 9.8 g m−3 in early 2001, and tilapia at 3–5 g m−3 in April of 2002. From June to October, average phytoplankton density decreased from 897.6×106 cells l−1 in 2000 to 291.7×106 cells l−1 in 2001 and 183.0×106 cells l−1 in 2002. Compared to 2000, the annual average phytoplankton biomass in 2001 and 2002 decreased by 48.6% and 63.8%, respectively. The blue-green algal biomass which made up 70% of the total phytoplankton biomass in 2000 was reduced to 22.1% in 2001 and 11.2% in 2002. Meanwhile, Secchi depth increased from 20–50 cm to 55–137 cm during the same time period. Similar results were observed in some other eutrophic waters. For example, algal bloom disappeared about 20 days after tilapia fingerlings were stocked (8–15 g m−3) to a pond in Zhenhai Park. Chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton production declined dramatically whereas water transparency increased substantially. However, the impacts of tilapia on nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in natural lakes need further investigation. Our studies revealed that stocking tilapia is an effective way to control algal blooms in eutrophic waters, especially in lakes where nutrient loading cannot be reduced sufficiently, and where grazing by zooplankton cannot control phytoplankton production effectively.  相似文献

Variations of phytoplankton assemblages were studied in November–December 2001, in surface waters of the Southern Ocean along a transect between the Sub-Antarctic Zone (SAZ) and the Seasonal Ice Zone (SIZ; 46.9°–64.9°S; 142°–143°E; CLIVAR-SR3 cruise). Two regions had characteristic but different phytoplankton assemblages. Nanoflagellates(<20 μm) and pico-plankton (∼2 μm) occurred in similar concentrations along the transect, but were dominant in the SAZ, Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF), Polar Front Zone (PFZ) and the Inter-Polar Front Zone (IPFZ), (46.9°–56.9°S). Along the entire transect their average cell numbers in the upper 70 m of water column, varied from 3 × 105 to 1.1 × 106 cells l−1. Larger cells (>20 μm), diatoms and dinoflagellates, were more abundant in the Antarctic Zone-South (AZ-S) and the SIZ, (60.9°–64.9°S). In AZ-S and SIZ diatoms ranged between 2.7 × 105 and 1.2 × 106 cells l−1, dinoflagellates from 3.1 × 104 to 1.02 × 105 cells l−1. A diatom bloom was in progress in the AZ-S showing a peak of 1.8 × 106 cells l−1. Diatoms were dominated by Pseudo-nitzschia spp., Fragilariopsis spp., and Chaetoceros spp. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. outnumbered other diatoms in the AZ-S. Fragilaropsis spp. were most numerous in the SIZ. Dinoflagellates contained autotrophs (e.g. Prorocentrum) and heterotrophs (Gyrodinium/Gymnodinium, Protoperidinium). Diatoms and dinoflagellates contributed most to the cellular carbon: 11–25 and 17–124 μg C l−1, respectively. Small cells dominated in the northern region characterized by the lowest N-uptake and new production of the transect. Larger diatom cells were prevalent in the southern area with higher values of N-uptake and new production. Diatom and nanoflagellate cellular carbon contents were highly correlated with one another, with primary production, and productivity related parameters. They contributed up to 75% to the total autotrophic C biomass. Diatom carbon content was significantly correlated to nitrate uptake and particle export, but not to ammonium uptake, while flagellate carbon was well correlated to ammonium uptake, but not to export. Diatoms have contributed highly to particle export along the latitudinal transect, while flagellates played a minor role in the export.  相似文献

We studied the trophic development of the past 30–100 years in eight moderately deep Dutch lakes based on their sedimentary fossil diatom assemblages. The dominant diatoms indicating meso- to eutrophic conditions were Aulacoseira subarctica, Cyclotella ocellata, C. cyclopuncta, C. meneghiniana, Puncticulata bodanica, Aulacoseira granulata, Cyclostephanos dubius, C. invisitatus, Stephanodiscus hantzschii, S. medius, and S. parvus. Ordination of diatom data separated the lakes into four groups according to their total phosphorus concentrations (TP), water supply, water management, and origin. The first group consists of dike-breach lakes, which were in stable eutrophic to hypertrophic conditions throughout the past century with diatom-inferred TP (DI-TP) concentrations of between 70 and 300 μg l−1. The main factors influencing these dike-breach lakes are river management, ground water supply of riverine origin, and local land use. The second group are artificial lakes of fluctuating oligo- to mesotrophic conditions and DI-TP concentrations of 10–30 μg l−1. Only one of the artificial lakes showed a DI-TP increase due to changes in catchment agricultural practice. A third group includes an artificial moat and an inland dike-breach lake with DI-TP concentrations of 50–100 μg l−1. The fourth group contains an individual dike-breach lake with stable mesotrophic conditions of 50 μg l−1 throughout the past century. Rather than showing a regional pattern, the studied lakes behave very individualistically with regard to their trophic history, reflecting changes in the local hydrology and in their nutrient sources.  相似文献

Antarctic lakes are extreme ecosystems with microbially dominated food webs, in which viruses may be important in controlling community dynamics. A year long investigation of two Antarctic saline lakes (Ace and Pendant Lakes) revealed high concentrations of virus like particles (VLP) (0.20–1.26 × 108 ml−1), high VLP: bacteria ratios (maximum 70.6) and a seasonal pattern of lysogeny differing from that seen at lower latitudes. Highest rates of lysogeny (up to 32% in Pendant Lake and 71% in Ace Lake) occurred in winter and spring, with low or no lysogeny in summer. Rates of virus production (range 0.176–0.823 × 106 viruses ml−1 h−1) were comparable to lower latitude freshwater lakes. In Ace Lake VLP did not correlate with bacterial cell concentration or bacterial production but correlated positively with primary production, while in Pendant Lake VLP abundance correlated positively with both bacterial cell numbers and bacterial production but not with primary production. In terms of virus and bacterial dynamics the two saline Antarctic lakes studied appear distinct from other aquatic ecosystems investigated so far, in having very high viral to bacterial ratios (VBR) and a very high occurrence of lysogeny in winter.  相似文献

Extracellular phosphatases are an important part of the phosphorus cycle in aquatic environments. Phosphatase activity (PA) in plankton was studied in seven subtropical shallow lakes of different exploitation management and trophic status in the urban area of Wuhan City. Bulk PA was rather high (range 1.1–11 μmol l−1 h−1), although concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) were also high (range 27 μg P l−1 to ~1.5 mg P l−1) in all lakes. Cell-associated extracellular PA in phytoplankton was detected using the fluorescence-labelled enzyme activity technique. Phytoplankton species partly contributed to the bulk PA. We found explicit differences in the presence of cell-associated phosphatase within the main phytoplankton groups; species belonging to Chlorophyta and Dinophyta were regularly phosphatase-positive, while Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyceae were phosphatase-negative in all but one case. Furthermore, there is a certain potential of extracellular phosphatases produced by heterotrophic nanoflagellates in most of the lakes. This new finding compromises the ‘traditional’ interpretation of bulk phosphatase data as being due to overall phytoplankton or bacterial P regeneration.  相似文献

The abundance and composition of phytoplankton were investigated at six stations along a transect from the Barguzin River inflow to the central basin of Lake Baikal in August 2002 to clarify the effect of the river inflow on the phytoplankton community in the lake. The water temperature in the epilimnion was high near the shore at Station 1 (17.3°C), probably due to the higher temperature of the river water, and gradually decreased offshore at Station 6 (14.5°C). Thermal stratification developed at Stations 2–6, and a thermocline was observed at a 17–22-m depth at Stations 2–4 and an 8–12-m depth at Stations 5 and 6. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients in the epilimnion at all stations were <1.0 μmol N l−1 and <0.16 μmol P l−1, respectively. Relatively high concentrations of nutrients (0.56–7.38 μmol N l−1 and 0.03–0.28 μmol P l−1) were detected in the deeper parts of the euphotic zone. Silicate was not exhausted at all stations (>20 μmol Si l−1). The chlorophyll a (chl. a) concentration was high (>10 μg l−1) near the shore at Station 1 and low (<3 μg l−1) at five other stations. The <2 μm fraction of chl. a in Stations 2–6 ranged between 0.80 and 1.85 μg l−1, and its contribution to total chl. a was high (>60%). In this fraction, picocyanobacteria were abundant at all stations and ranged between 5 × 104 and 5 × 105 cells ml−1. In contrast, chl. a in the >2 μm fraction varied significantly (0.14–11.17 μg l−1), and the highest value was observed at Station 1. In this fraction, the dominant phytoplankton was Aulacoseira and centric diatoms at Station 1 and Cryptomonas, Ankistrodesmus, Asterionella, and Nitzschia at Stations 2–6. The present study demonstrated the dominance of picophytoplankton in the pelagic zone, while higher abundance of phytoplankton dominated by diatoms was observed in the shallower littoral zone. These larger phytoplankters in the littoral zone probably depend on nutrients from the Barguzin River.  相似文献

Heterotrophic bacterial and viral concentrations (range, 0.7 × 104 to 206.2 × 104 ml−1 and 0.05 × 106 to 128.9 × 106 ml−1, respectively) were determined in several Arctic freshwater environments, including lakes and glacial ecosystems (78.55°N, 11.56°E). Our bacteria and virus results mirrored trends seen in temperate lakes, with an average virus-to-bacteria ratio (VBR) of 13 (range, 7.3–25.2) and viral concentrations and DOC positively correlated with bacterial concentrations (R = 0.964, P < 0.01 and R = 0.813, P < 0.05, respectively). Lysogenic bacteria, determined by induction with Mitomycin C, were not detected in any of the investigated Arctic freshwater environments. Nutrient-addition experiments at in situ and at elevated temperatures were performed to elucidate the factors which influenced the bacterial growth and the virus–bacteria interactions in Arctic freshwaters. Our results suggest that multiple limiting factors interacted and constrained bacterial growth. Bacterial concentrations and doubling times increased at elevated temperatures and appeared to be co-stimulated by phosphorus and carbon. However, viral concentrations showed a lack of response to nutrient addition thus indicating an uncoupling between bacteria and viruses in the experiment.  相似文献

Planktonic picocyanobacteria abundance and diversity were investigated in nine lakes on the East Tibetan Plateau spanning a salinity gradient of 0.4–22.6 g l−1. The investigation was conducted using epifluorescence microscopy (EFM) and terminal restriction fragment polymorphism analysis of 16S–23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) PCR amplicons followed by sequence analyses of large ITS clone libraries of seven selected samples. EFM showed that picocyanobacteria comprised 7–19% of the total prokaryotic cells found in surface water. Most of the clones were classified into six clusters and grouped within the “picocyanobacterial clade”, which consists exclusively of freshwater Synechococcus. Four new phylogenetic clusters and one new subcluster of Synechococcus spp. were found, none of which are members of any known picocyanobacterial clusters. The new clusters and subcluster were the most abundant picocyanobacteria (about 96% of the sequences) in the samples collected. Sequence analyses indicated that members of the four new Synechococcus groups were only found in freshwater lakes (<1.0 g l−1 of total dissolved solid), while members of the new subcluster were found in all the investigated Tibetan lakes, over a large salinity gradient of 0.4–22.6 g l 1. This suggests that there is ecologically significant microdiversity within the observed Synechococcus group as defined by ITS sequences. Collectively our study demonstrated abundant and potentially novel Synechococcus in East Tibetan lakes that are likely the result of evolutionary adaptations to regional conditions.  相似文献

The rates of photosynthesis and dark CO2 fixation were determined in 12 soda lakes of the Kulunda steppe. Characterization of the phototrophic communities was given, and the cell numbers of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (APB) were determined. The photosynthetic production in different lakes was substantially different, constituting from 0.01 to 1.32 g C m−2 day−1. The main part of carbon dioxide was assimilated in the process of oxygenic photosynthesis. Anoxygenic photosynthesis was recorded only in 5 of the 12 lakes studied. Its values varied between 0.06 and 0.42 g C m−2 day−1, constituting from 8 to 34% of the total photosynthetic activity. Anoxygenic photosynthesis was revealed in the lakes where the number of APB reached 107–109 CFU cm−3. Dark CO2 fixation constituted 0.01–0.15 g C m−2 day−1. Positive correlation was observed between the primary production value and water alkalinity. No relationship between productivity and water mineralization was revealed in the 30–200 g l−1 range, whereas an increase in salinity above 200 g l−1 suppressed the photosynthetic activity. The mechanisms of influence of the environmental factors on the rate of photosynthesis are discussed.  相似文献
