Among the alternatives to environmentally toxic and socio-economically unacceptable chemical pesticides, essential oils from Ocimum gratissimum and Cymbopogon citratus were tested on the main pests and beneficial insects of the cotton plant in Côte d′Ivoire. After extraction and chemical analysis of the essential oils, field trials were carried out using a Fisher block system with three treatment repetitions where their effects compared with those of a registered synthetic insecticide (IBIS A 52 EC). Foliar applications of the products were carried out in accordance with the cotton plant protection extension programme in Côte d′Ivoire from the 45th to the 115th day after plant emergence, with one application every fortnight. Twenty-three and forty compounds representing about 96 and 99 % of the oil composition of O. gratissimum and C. citratus respectively were elucidated. The most abundant compounds were p-cymene and thymol (O. gratissimum) and myrcene, neral and geranial (C. citratus). The essential oil of O. gratissimum at concentrations of 2 and 5 % showed insecticidal activity on all pests (biting-sucking and carpophagous), except the phyllophagous Syllepte derogata. C. citratus, at a low concentration (1 %), was particularly toxic to whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), however, it favoured the action of beneficial insects, specifically black ants and ladybirds in the cotton plots, unlike the chemical product. EO of O. gratissimum (1.60 and 4.62 mg GALAE/g, respectively) and C. citratus (2.26 and 2.78 mg GALAE, respectively) exhibited also significant acetyl and butyryl cholinesterase inhibitors. Insecticide formulations based on the essential oils of O. gratissimum and C. citratus offer favourable prospects for their use in cotton cultivation as an alternative to chemical pesticides.  相似文献

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is a popular fruit vegetable in Nigeria but production is low due to diseases, among the various disease problems associated with tomato production is southern blight caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. This study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of Aframomum melegueta, Ocimum gratissimum and Cymbopogon citratus in vitro and in vivo. Infected tomato stems were obtained from the experimental plots of National Horticultural Research Institute, Nigeria. Cultural and morphological identification of the organism was done with the use of microscope. A. melegueta seeds, fresh leaves of O. gratissimum and C. citratus were used. The experiment was replicated three times, radial growth (mm) was measured for 5?days at an interval of 24?h. The in vivo experiment was conducted using the same extracts in a screen house and the experiment was laid out in triplicates in completely randomised design with the synthetic fungicide as control. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance and significant means were separated using Fisher’s Least Significant Difference at P???0.05. The results showed that the extracts differed significantly (P???0.05) in their potential to inhibit the growth of S. rolfsii. The highest reduction (1.27?mm) in radial growth was obtained with 5% O. gratissimum extract while the least (4.63?cm) was recorded with the control. Disease severity and fruit yield varied among the treatments. The highest yield (170.6?g) was obtained on plants treated with 5% O. gratissimum extract and this was comparable with the yield (155.8?g) obtained on plants treated with funguforce.  相似文献

Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. is an important fungal pathogen affecting the production of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Conventional control methods using chemicals are expensive, which constitute environmental hazards. This has necessitated the search for alternatives in botanicals. Ethanol and supernatant solution of fermented maize slurry extracts from Ocimum gratissimum, Cymbopogon citratus, Xylopia aethiopica, Aframomum melegueta and Allium sativum were evaluated. In vitro test was carried out at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% concentrations against the pathogen. Mycelial growth was significantly reduced in the following descending order: O. gratissimum?>?A. melegueta?>?A. sativum?>?X. aethiopica?>?C. citratus. Supernatant solution extracts of O. gratissimum and A. melegueta at 5% concentration gave highest mycelial reduction (0.00?mm), respectively, while O. gratissimum ethanol extract recorded highest mycelial reduction (0.23?mm) among the ethanol extracts. Supernatant solution of fermented maize slurry extracts of O. gratissimum and A. melegueta at 5% concentration was more effective in reducing mycelial growth of S. rolfsii.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of foliar spray of aqueous extracts of Tithonia diversifolia or Ocimum gratissimum on Cercospora leaf spot (CLS) and Alternaria leaf blight (ALB) diseases of sesame intercropped with maize. Spraying regime was at 2 weeks interval from 3 weeks after planting (WAP) until 12 WAP. Extracts of T. diversifolia or O. gratissimum reduced the incidence and severity of both diseases. CLS incidence and severity as well as defoliation was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced below what obtained in the unsprayed intercrop. ALB lesion size was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced by T. diversifolia extract at 8.0% (w/v) from 154.7 mm2 (sole crop) or 13.4 mm2 (unsprayed intercrop) to 4.9 mm2 (sprayed intercrop). T. diversifolia extract at 8.0% (w/v) enhanced higher values of grain yield/plant and incidence of normal seeds, and lower incidence of fungal infection of seeds than in the unsprayed intercrop.  相似文献

Extracts of Cymbopogon citratus, Azadirachta indica (Neem) and Ocimum gratissimum were effective in controlling the growth of Rhizopus oryzae in vitro and in vivo. Neem was found to be the best followed by C. citratus and O. gratissimum. Alcohol extracts of these plant species were more effective than water extracts in reducing the growth of the pathogen in culture and in checking rot development in potato tuber by the fungus. A. indica and C. citratus have considerable disease control potential and their extracts can be exploited as a source of pesticide of plant origin to control the soft rot in stored potato incited by Rhizopus oryzae.  相似文献

Plots of clonal Trinitario cocoa were sprayed with fungicides in the field. Ripe pods were harvested from the trial plots and artificially inoculated with Phytophthora palmivora using various techniques, the most suitable of which proved to be the zoospore spot method. Percentage infection results from the spot inoculation tests agreed well with the field percentage infection results and it was concluded that field spraying followed by zoospore spot inoculation of detached pods is a suitable preliminary screening technique for fungicides. Three systemic fungicides metalaxyl, aluminium tris (ethyl phosphonate) and DPX-3217 in a mixture with captafol and copper oxychloride were compared with the protectant cuprous oxide. Metalaxyl was found to be the most effective of the systemic fungicides and when applied at the rate of 0·44 g ai/ha every 8 wk it gave a similar reduction in percentage infection to 4 weekly applications of cuprous oxide at the rate of 4·4 kg Cu++/ha during the wetter part of the year when pod rot is most severe.  相似文献

The leaf extracts of Piper guinensis, Ocimum sanctum, O. gratissimum and Cymbopogon citratus were effective in reducing the radial growth of Rhizoctonia solani in vitro and in checking the spread of the disease caused by the pathogen in the field. P. guinensis was the best in checking the spread of the pathogen both in vitro and in vivo. This was followed by C. citratus, O. sanctum and O. gratissimum. Citrus limon reduced the radial growth of the pathogen in vitro but failed to check the spread of the disease effectively in the field. Alcohol extracts were more effective than water extracts.  相似文献

Faced with the serious consequences resulting from the abusive and repeated use of synthetic chemicals, today rethinking crop protection is more than necessary. It is in this context that the essential oils of the Lamiaceae Ocimum gratissimum and Ocimum canum, the Poaceae Cymbopogon citratus and nardus and a Rutaceae Citrus sp. of known chemical compositions were experimented. The evaluation of the larvicidal potential of the essential oils was done by the method of topical application of the test solutions, on the L1−L2 stage larvae from the first generation of S. frugiperda obtained after rearing in an air-conditioned room. Lethal concentrations (LC10, LC50 and LC90) were determined after 48 h. After assessing the larvicidal potential of essential oils, molecular docking was carried out to study protein-ligand interactions and their propensity to bind to insect enzyme sites (AChE). The essential oil of O. gratissimum was the most effective with the lowest lethal concentrations (LC10=0.91 %, LC50=1.91 % and LC90=3.92 %). The least toxic oil to larvae was Citrus sp. (LC10=5.44 %, LC50=20.50 % and LC90=77.41 %). Molecular docking revealed that p-cymene and thymol from O. gratissimum essential oil are structurally similar and bind to the AChE active site via predominantly hydrophobic interactions and a H-bond with Tyr374 in the case of thymol. The essential oil of O. gratissimum constitutes a potential candidate for the development of biological insecticides for the fight against insect pests and for the protection of the environment.  相似文献

The effect of aqueous extract of Cymbopogon citratus on sorghum seed germination and its efficacy against Phoma sorghina transmission to sorghum vegetative organs and seed were studied in field conditions in 2008–2010. During these years, we also examined the effect of panicle protection on the reduction of P. sorghina infection. The aqueous extract of C. citratus lowers sorghum seed germination compared to untreated seeds, seeds treated with water and those treated with fungicide calthio C. P. sorghina is transmitted to the whole vegetative organs and seed of all the treatments. However, the aqueous extract of C. citratus significantly reduces the transmission of P. sorghina compared to untreated seeds, to seeds treated with water and those treated with fungicide. The protection of sorghum panicles before flowering limits the infection by P. sorghina compared to the panicles not protected.  相似文献

The study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of the aqueous extracts ofBalanites aegyptiaca (L.) Del., Cymbopogon citratus D. C. Stapf, Cassia occidentalis L. and Portulaca oleracea L. different durations of extracts maceration (6, 12, 24 and 48 h) and different durations of soaking seed in plant extracts (6, 12 and 24 h). All the plant extracts tested significantly reduced the infection rate by C. graminicola and P. sorghina except for the extract of C.occidentalis which was not efficient against P. sorghina. Extract of C. citratus and P. oleracea were more efficient on the reduction of the infection rate by C.graminicola. Those of B. aegyptiaca and C. citratus were the most efficient in reducing infection by P. sorghina. Long period of soaking and macerate were favourable in increasing of the antifungal efficiency of the extract.  相似文献

Phytophthora pathogens have contributed largely to the production losses of plantation crops such as cacao and durian. Correct identification and knowledge of the diversity of the pathogen is a requisite in the formulation of effective management strategies. Fifty-eight putative Phytophthora isolates were collected from cacao and durian orchards in South-Central Mindanao, Philippines, with 43 from cacao and 15 from durian. Molecular identification of isolates based on DNA sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), partial β-tubulin (β-tub) and mitochondrial gene (cox2+spacer) regions combined with morphocultural characterization identified 57 Phytophthora palmivora isolates from cacao and durian typically showing variations in colony morphology and sporangial shape. However, these variations were not phylogenetically informative. One Phytophthora meadii (CDDS-P3) causing pod rot of cacao was phylogenetically isolated from P. palmivora. Phylogenetic analysis of isolates using combined ITS, β-tubulin (β-tub) and mitochondrial (cox2+spacer) DNA regions showed an intraspecific variation within P. palmivora. Representative isolates of P. palmivora used for cross-inoculation showed more aggressiveness on its original host with higher lesion diameter and less aggressiveness on its potential hosts with smaller lesion diameter on artificially inoculated detached plant part. All Phytophthora isolates were tested pathogenic to cacao, durian and its potential hosts (rubber and coconut); therefore, cross-infection in the field is possible in an intercrop system. Implementation of combined control strategies should be done against highly diverse pathogens such as P. palmivora and the potentially destructive pathogen P. meadii, which was tested pathogenic and virulent to its original (cacao) and potential hosts (coconut, durian and rubber).  相似文献

Bud rot disease affecting oil palm in South American countries is reported to be caused by Phytophthora palmivora. P. palmivora is a local pathogen affecting various crops in Malaysia, and this finding caused an alarm, which prompted an investigation of pathogenicity using Malaysian P. palmivora to assess the potentials of this Oomycete to infect oil palm in Malaysia. A total of 11 P. palmivora isolates were obtained from cocoa and durian for the study. Leaf bioassays via artificial inoculation using 50,000 zoospores/ml and mycelial agar disc showed severe necrotic lesions on the infection spot of oil palm (DxP) spear leaves. Mild infection was observed in oil palm spear leaves of OxG hybrids indicating lower susceptibility against P. palmivora infection. Phylogenetic analysis using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) data revealed that Malaysian isolates were genetically similar to Colombian isolates supported by significant bootstrap values. The leaf bioassay results revealed that Malaysian oil palm materials are susceptible towards local P. palmivora infection. The Colombian P. palmivora isolates causing bud rot incidence may have evolved over a long period of time, undergone sequential genetic shift to become more virulent towards Colombian oil palm planting materials.  相似文献

The tents of different ant species collected from young cocoa trees in their first or second year of bearing and free from visible pod rot, were tested for the presence of Phytopthtora palmivora by inoculating wounded cocoa pods with tent material. Tents of all species harboured viable P. palmivora but those consisting mainly of soil were more frequently positive than plant debris-type tents. Although Anoplolepis longipes, a dominant, ground nesting, non-tent building species sometimes transported inocula in the laboratory, it did not significantly increase black pod infection in the field. Trees infested with the dominant debris tent building species, Technomyrmex albipes, however, had significantly more black pod than those infested with A. longipes or trees without ants. A. longipes forms dense populations and can exclude other dominant ants and some cocoa pests; its introduction may be a potentially economical method of reducing the transmission of P. palmivora in redeveloped cocoa in Papua New Guinea.  相似文献

The cocoa tree, Theobroma cacao L., suffers large yield losses in Aceh Indonesia due to the disease black pod rot, caused by Phytophthora spp. Despite having the largest area under cacao production in Sumatra, farmers in the Aceh region have low overall production because of losses to insect pests and black pod rot. Trichoderma spp. were isolated from the roots and leaves of cacao trees and screened as potential biological control agents. Isolates used in the study were Trichoderma asperellum isolates T2 and T4, Trichoderma longibrachiatum isolates T15 and T16, and Trichoderma virens isolates T1 and Tv. T1, T2, T4, and Tv completely colonized and destroyed Phytophthora tropicalis and Phytophthora palmivora mycelium in precolonized plate assays. All six isolates reduced P. tropicalis, but none reduced the growth of P. palmivora in dual plate assays. Phytophthora growth was suppressed on MIN media amended with sterile heat inactivated Trichoderma culture filtrates, with Tv best suppressing growth of both Phytophthora spp. T. virens isolate Tv was the only isolate observed coiling around P. tropicalis mycelium and disrupted the formation of P. palmivora sporangia. Of all six isolates, only Tv reduced P. palmivora lesion expansion in a detached pod assay, reducing severity by 71%. Tv also reduced P. palmivora infection on seedlings when applied aerially at 1 × 106 and 1 × 108 conidia/ml, by 19% and 59%, respectively. T. virens isolate Tv is a mycoparasite, antagonizes Phytophthora in a dual plate assay, and shows antibiosis against Phytophthora spp., suggesting that multiple modes of action contribute to its ability to limit Phytophthora lesion expansion on cacao pods and seedlings.  相似文献

Inoculation of resistant (R) and susceptible (S) Hevea brasiliensisleaves with Phytophthora palmivorainduced foliar necrosis and biosynthesis of scopoletin (Scp), considered as a Heveaphytoalexin. The degree of resistance of four clones, as classified by the necrotic lesions, was related to the rapidity and intensity of Scp production. The resistant BPM-24, and marked partially resistant clone PB-235, displayed an early secretion of scopoletin that intensified and lasted longer than the weak partially resistant RRIT251, and susceptible clone RRIM600. The lesion size and amount of Scp after infection were positively correlated to the concentration of spores applied to Hevealeaves. In addition, in leaflets inoculated with high spore concentration, Scp reached the highest level earlier than those with low spore concentration. A fungitoxic effect of Scp on mycelium growth was shown in bioassays; the I50 value tested on Phytophthora palmivora was relatively the same as on Phytophthora botryosa, but much lower than those found on other leaf pathogens of rubber tree, Corynespora cassiicolaand Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The lesion size and level of Scp upon spore inoculation may be appropriate for classifying Heveaclones according to their R/S with respect to P. palmivora  相似文献

Oospores ofPhytophthora palmivora andP. botryosa fromHevea brasiliensis were produced when complementary strains of the same species were incubated on V-8 juice agar in continuous darkness, with or without a subsequent period of continuous light. The oospores germinated at a rate of 15–30 % in demineralised water at 26 °C in normal daylight conditions. Other substrates did not improve the germination rate. Single-zoospore colonies derived from sporangia formed by a single oospore were similar to each other in morphology and in pathogenicity toHevea leaves. Over 400 single-oospore isolates from four intraspecific matings ofP. palmivora, and 102 from one pairing ofP. botryosa, were examined. The progeny differed in morphological appearance, mating behaviour, temperature-growth relations, pathogenicity toHevea leaf petioles and cacao pods, rate of production, shape and size of sporangia and in the abundance of chlamydospores. The progeny from an intraspecific cross ofP. botryosa was more variable, with a few isolates being similar in appearance toP. palmivora, having permanently lost their parental characteristic of producing small oval sporangia in clumps. One isolate in particular was indistinguishable fromP. palmivora in morphology and in its ability to produce functional oospores when mated withP. palmivora. Oospores formed by interspecific crosses could not be germinated. With both species, many progeny was less pathogenic than the parents, and many completely non-infective isolates with respect toHevea, cacao and other host plants were produced. Sexual reproduction resulted in a diversity of phenotypes, and both parental types and recombinants were recovered.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the volatile fraction of Ocimum gratissimum concrete (romba) from Madagascar has been determined for the first time by GC/MS and GC-FID. A methyl cinnamate chemotype has been determined for this material, along with a set of compounds typical in essential oils and extracts from plants of the Ocimum genus. Variability was mostly observed on terpenes and terpenoids components. GC-O-MS was also used for a sensory evaluation of this material performed by a master perfumer. The chemical composition of this O. gratissimum extract was then compared with literature data to assess subtle differences between chemotypes of the same species and other species of the same genus within natural variability. A mapping illustrates the occurrence of the cinnamate chemotype in Eastern Africa, India and now Madagascar, while other origins generally present eugenol, thymol, camphor, or linalool chemotypes.  相似文献

Canker disease of Theobroma cacao L. caused by Phytophthora palmivora (Butler) Butler gives rise to serious damage in Fiji and is common in the S.W. Pacific area. Fusarium decemcellulareBiick (imperfect stage of Calonectria rigidiuscula (Berk. & Br.) Sacc.) was constantly associated with P. palmivora in disorders of cocoa but was not found to be a primary pathogen. Most Amelonado cocoa trees were resistant to canker but there were differences in the reactions of other Forastero and of Trinitario types. The F1 generation of a local Trinitario selection, itself resistant, showed segregation resulting in a proportion of very susceptible plants. Isolates of P. palmivora from black pod, canker and green twigs were equally pathogenic, both to pods and seedling stems. Sporangial dimensions, particularly the length/breadth ratio, differed from those reported elsewhere. It is uncertain whether the reason that cocoa canker is more serious in some countries than others is because of differences in the pathogenicity of P. palmivora strains to bark or the genetic differences of the cocoa grown.  相似文献

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), one of the leading staples in the world, has considerable scope for integration into emerging markets through efficient and environmentally sound production of a diversified range of high quality, competitive products for food, feed and industry. One of the major reasons attributed to the low productivity of cassava in India is the incidence of tuber rot in cassava incited by Phytophthora palmivora. Usually, an array of microorganisms is involved in rotting of cassava tubers in the field and in postharvest conditions. Unfortunately, the disease management practices focus mainly on fungal pathogens. In this article, we tried to investigate the role of associative bacterial pathogens in induction of tuber rot of cassava, the potential of the bacteria with P. palmivora in causing disease incidence, spread and rotting. The bacteria and P. palmivora were originally isolated from tuber rot infected cassava from the field having a disease incidence percentage of above 40%, checked for pathogenicity and were proven for Koch postulate. The detached tubers of disease resistant (cv. Sree Pathmanabha) and susceptible cultivars (cv. M4) of cassava were used for the study. The effect of bacterial association was studied in Cassava agar plate assay, in detached tubers and in in planta experiments in in vitro glass house conditions. The bacterial isolates were identified as Gram-negative coco bacilli of class Pseudomonas, Erwinia amylovora and Achromobacter denitrificans.  相似文献

Forty‐nine Phytophthora isolates were obtained from roots and crown of apricot trees with symptoms of decline grown in commercial orchards in Malatya, Elaz?? and Diyarbak?r provinces, Turkey, in 2011 and 2013. All of the recovered isolates were identified as Phytophthora palmivora on the basis of morphological characteristics. Blast analysis of ITS region sequences of rDNA of 5 isolates revealed 100% identity with a reference isolates of P. palmivora from GenBank. Isolates of P. palmivora were pathogenic on 12‐month‐old wild apricot rootstock ‘Zerdali’ plants that were wound inoculated on the roots and on the crown. This study demonstrated that P. palmivora is the cause of the crown and root rot found on apricot in Turkey. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. palmivora on this host plant.  相似文献
