The purpose of this research was to identify the relationship between task performance and menstrual cycle. The difference of performance on menstrual cycle phase was investigated. The task was the mental arithmetic task which involved the non-sequential and higher order cognitive processes. The duration of the experiment was twenty minutes. Two-way analysis of variance by repeated-measures design was used to examine the differences in task performance between phases and temporal variations. Results showed that there was a significant difference in correct input time during temporal variations though there was no significant difference between phases. Moreover, the relationships between phases and intra-individual variations in task performance were examined using coefficient of variance (CV). CVs were plotted in three dimensions to examine the relationships between intra-individual variations and phases. Based on CVs, the subjects who showed differences were classified into two groups: those with a small difference in three phases and those with a difference every phase. The aim of the study was to assess if a simple motor task, one that required muscle contractions well below maximum, showed evidence of circadian changes and time-awake. The task consisted of using a larger counter to flick a number of smaller counters to land as near as possible to the center of a target. The closer a counter landed next to the center of the target, the higher the score obtained. Two distances from the target were used (long and short), and 20 counters were flicked at each distance. The task was performed by 72 diurnally active healthy participants at six test sessions distributed every 4 h throughout the day (08:00 h, 12:00 h, ... , 04:00 h), so covering a circadian cycle. When performing the sessions, subjects had been awake for about 1, 4, ... , 20 h. Before each test session, sublingual temperature was measured, and estimates of the individual's fatigue and alertness were made. Clear normally phased circadian rhythms (p<0.0001) in oral temperature and alertness with mean peak time (i.e., acrophases of 17.2 h and 15.9 h, respectively) and fatigue (i.e., mean acrophase of 3.4 h) were detected. The total scores for both the long and short distances also showed circadian rhythms that peaked slightly before the temperature rhythm (by 2.31+/-0.91 h and 1.77+/-0.77 h, mean+/-SE, respectively), and the number of occasions that the target was missed altogether showed rhythms that were in anti-phase (mean acrophases=3.8 h and 4.1 h for the long and short distances, respectively) to that of total scores (mean acrophases=16.0 h and 15.2 h for the long and short distances, respectively). With the long and, particularly, short distances, there were generally significant correlations (r<0.0005) between both the measures of accuracy (total score and number of misses) and body temperature and time-awake. The accuracy of performance at this task seems to show circadian and time-awake effects, and so makes it of potential value in protocols where repetitive measurements during the course of a day are required. 相似文献

Wrist splints are commonly prescribed to limit wrist motion and provide support at night and during inactive periods but are often used in the workplace. In theory, splinting the wrist should reduce wrist extensor muscle activity by stabilizing the joint and reducing the need for co-contraction to maintain posture. Ten healthy volunteers underwent a series of 24 10-s gripping trials with surface electromyography on 6 forearm muscles. Trials were randomized between splinted and nonsplinted conditions with three wrist postures (30 degrees flexion, neutral, and 30 degrees extension) and four grip efforts. Custom-made Plexiglas splints were taped to the dorsum of the hand and wrist. It was found that when simply holding the dynamometer, use of a splint led to a small (<1% MVE) but significant reduction in activity for all flexor muscles and extensor carpi radialis (all activity <4% maximum). At maximal grip, extensor muscle activity was significantly increased with the splints by 7.9-23.9% MVE. These data indicate that splinting at low-to-moderate grip forces may act to support the wrist against external loading, but appears counterproductive when exerting maximal forces. Wrist bracing should be limited to periods of no to light activity and avoided during tasks that require heavy efforts. 相似文献

Susceptibility to stress would presumably be different from person to person and be affected by the cause of the given stress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interactive effects of task difficulty and subject's personality on mood and autonomic nervous function when stress was induced experimentally by tasks involving 3 degrees of difficulty: easy (Task A), difficult but controllable (Task B), and very difficult and uncontrollable (Task C). Twelve healthy female subjects volunteered for the experiment. We assessed their personalities using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) questionnaire. Mood states were evaluated by a profile of mood states and a frontal alpha laterality ratio (FALR). Autonomic nervous function was estimated by a spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Repeated measures analysis of variance applied to two groups (low- and high-) divided by a median split of MMPI clinical scales, revealed significant interactions of time course x task difficulty x Hs (hypochondriasis) in FALR and time course x task difficulty x Pt (psychasthenia) in a low-frequency component and in a high-frequency component of HRV, and in FALR. The differences between low- and high-Hs, and low- and high-Pt were more obvious in Task B session. High-Hs group, whose members tend to place overemphasis on existing physical disorders, showed more negative FALR throughout the session, which would indicate prolonged negative mood possibly due to the task. High-Pt group, whose members tend to be susceptible to stress, showed sympathetic predominance during task period and parasympathetic predominance after task period, which would imply a tendency to overreact. These results suggest that task difficulties would affect mood states assessed by FALR and/or autonomic nervous function differently depending on the subject's personality, especially on Hs and Pt. 相似文献

In human visual perception, there is evidence that different visual attributes, such as colour, form and motion, have different neural-processing latencies. Specifically, recent studies have suggested that colour changes are processed faster than motion changes. We propose that the processing latencies should not be considered as fixed quantities for different attributes, but instead depend upon attribute salience and the observer's task. We asked observers to respond to high- and low-salience colour and motion changes in three different tasks. The tasks varied from having a strong motor component to having a strong perceptual component. Increasing salience led to shorter processing times in all three tasks. We also found an interaction between task and attribute: motion was processed more quickly in reaction-time tasks, whereas colour was processed more quickly in more perceptual tasks. Our results caution against making direct comparisons between latencies for processing different visual attributes without equating salience or considering task effects. More-salient attributes are processed faster than less-salient ones, and attributes that are critical for the task are also processed more quickly. 相似文献

Summary Radiation action occurs over a broad timescale which extends from the very early physical processes associated with energy absorption to the very late biological effects, such as carcinogenesis which may not become apparent until many years later. The various temporal stages of radiation action are classified and their interrelationships described. Experimental projects in cellular radiation chemistry, including pulse radiolysis, are discussed, together with some applications of the techniques in this general area.The paper also deals with some aspects of the oxygen effect in radiobiology and the mechanisms of its action. Various studies employing fast response techniques have been useful in verifying the role of fast free radical reactions in the oxygen effects and examples are given of some applications. Investigations with other hypoxic cell sensitizers, the electron affinic agents, are also briefly discussed, with an account of how studies of the timescale of radiation sensitization can be valuable in understanding mechanisms. The present study aimed to elucidate whether the type of feedback influences the performance and the motor cortical activity when executing identical visuomotor tasks. For this purpose, time to task failure was measured during position- and force-controlled muscular contractions. Subjects received either visual feedback about the force produced by pressing a force transducer or about the actual position between thumb and index finger. Participants were instructed to either match the force level of 30% MVC or the finger position corresponding to the thumb and index finger angle at this contraction intensity. Subjects demonstrated a shorter time to task failure when they were provided with feedback about their joint position (11.5 ± 6.2 min) instead of force feedback (19.2 ± 12.8 min; P = 0.01). To test differences in motor cortical activity between position- and force-controlled contractions, subthreshold transcranial magnetic stimulation (subTMS) was applied while executing submaximal (20% MVC) contractions. SubTMS resulted in a suppression of the first dorsal interosseus muscle (FDI) EMG in both tasks. However, the mean suppression for the position-controlled task was significantly greater (18.6 ± 9.4% vs. 13.3 ± 7.5%; P = 0.025) and lasted longer (13.9 ± 7.5 ms vs. 9.3 ± 4.3 ms; P = 0.024) compared to the force-controlled task. The FDI background EMG obtained without stimulation was comparable in all conditions. The present results demonstrate that the presentation of different feedback modalities influences the time to task failure as well as the cortical activity. As only the feedback was altered but not the mechanics of the task, the present results add to the body of evidence that suggests that the central nervous system processes force and position information in different ways. 相似文献

Length of baseline training influences how methamphetamine disrupts temporal performance under a peak interval schedule. Acute methamphetamine produces overestimation of time following relatively brief training, but following extended training, methamphetamine produces more general loss of stimulus control. The current study extends the study of training length on the effects of methamphetamine to an interval-bisection procedure. Six pigeons responded under a psychophysical choice procedure in which responses to one key color were correct after presentation of four shorter sample durations and responses to another key color were correct after presentation of four longer sample durations. One group of three pigeons received briefer baseline training (45 sessions), while another group received more extended training (223 sessions) prior to methamphetamine administration. There was no evidence of overestimation of time or generalized loss of stimulus control in either group. in one of four uniquely decorated bowls in a specific location in a room. After retention intervals of 10 min, 1 h, 7 h, and
24 h, pigeons were placed back in the room with the same bowl in the same location (unmanipulated trials) or with the previously
rewarding bowl in a new location and a different bowl in the previously rewarding location (test trials). Although all groups
chose the correct bowl during unmanipulated trials, hippocampal formation lesioned birds' choices to the bowl in the correct
location decreased compared to the combined controls during the test trials. The results suggest that hippocampal formation
lesions do not impair long-term memory of a goal after one experience but significantly decrease the use of spatial information
to return to that goal.

This double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject experiment examined the effects of low-dose caffeine on pain reported during an exhaustive grip task. The grip task consisted of holding a metal block attached to standard Olympic weight plates with the arm at the side until the participants could no longer maintain their grip. Apparently healthy recreationally trained college-aged adults (men, n = 5; women, n = 5) were given either a piece of Stay Alert? gum that delivered 85% of the effective dose of 100 mg of caffeine in 5 minutes or an identical placebo gum that contained no caffeine. Subsequently, pain perception and ratings of perceived exertion were recorded during an exhaustive grip task every 15 seconds and the overall time to exhaustion. No significant difference was found in time to exhaustion between treatments. A significant main effect of treatment for reported pain (p < 0.001, Φ = 0.377) was observed. Thus, in a population of recreationally trained college-aged adults, low-dose caffeine may attenuate the individual's perception of pain during a grip to exhaustion task. 相似文献

Managing highway rights-of-way (HROW) for safety depends upon the annual precipitation received and vegetation mowing practices. This study was conducted along a precipitation gradient in Texas, USA, to evaluate how precipitation and mowing treatments influence vegetation heights. The experiment was initiated in spring 1999 and completed in autumn 2002. Each site had ten treatments with four replications and consisted of forty 15 m × 6 m subplots. Commercial highway mowing equipment was used to mow the subplots at 5-, 10-, or 20-cm heights with an annual mowing frequency of one, two, or three times per year and a non-mowed control. A vegetation height of >30 cm is generally considered a safety hazard. Control subplot vegetation heights increased along the annual precipitation gradient. Most of the subplot vegetation heights at the more arid Andrews site (35 cm precipitation year?1) were <30 cm. Subplot vegetation heights at the Tahoka (50 cm precipitation year?1), Brady (66 cm precipitation year?1), and Lufkin (109 cm precipitation year?1) locations exceeded 30 cm, regardless of mowing frequency or height. Mowing treatments for HROW safety must be based on site-specific conditions. In areas that receive <35 cm precipitation year?1, mowing treatments have little effect on vegetation height, and management practices do not necessarily affect visual safety. In areas that receive >35 cm precipitation year?1, mowing three or less times per year, regardless of mowing height, makes it unfeasible to maintain the vegetation heights of <30 cm needed to maintain the HROW visual safety criterion. 相似文献

Circadian patterns have been observed in infants as early as the first few postnatal days. We hypothesized that, in each sleep-waking state, heart rate variation in several distinct frequency bands would show consistent variations across a night in newborn infants. Twelve-hour night-time recordings of EEG, ECG, EOG, digastric EMG, respiratory movements, and CO2 were obtained from 25 normal full-term infants at 2-7 days postnatal age. The extents of three types of heart rate variation were determined for all epochs identified as quiet sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and waking during each 4-hr period of the night. In particular states, the extent of all three types of heart rate variation decreased from the evening (7-11pm) to the late night (11pm-3am). Heart rate variation at the respiratory frequency showed such a time-of-night effect in quiet sleep only, resulting in a significant sleep state effect on respiratory sinus arrhythmia during the evening that disappeared later in the night. Previous studies have indicated that respiratory sinus arrhythmia is enhanced during quiet sleep, relative to other states, after 3 mo of age; the present findings suggest that the tendency for enhancement during quiet sleep is present even in the neonate, although this tendency is only expressed during the evening. Results indicate that time-of-night effects on heart rate variation are not constant across physiological states in neonates, and heart rate variation during the waking state is particularly unresponsive to these time-of-night influences. 相似文献

Stretching has been implemented as part of the warm-up before physical events and widely thought to promote increased sport performance and decreased injury risk. However, recent research has concluded that static stretching before many exercises inhibits acute power, strength, and sprinting performance. There is little research examining the time course of these effects on moderate intensity cycling. The purpose of this study was to examine the time course of static stretching on cycling economy. The subjects consisted of 5 men and 5 women highly trained endurance cyclists. The first of 3 visits was baseline testing of their cycling VO2max. The second and third visits were either stretching or no stretching before a 30-minute stationary ride at 65% of their VO2max. The stretching condition consisted of four 30-second repetitions of 5 stretches with an average total stretching time of 16 minutes. VO2 demonstrated a significant condition by time interaction with the 5-minute time point being significantly less in the nonstretching condition (32.66 ± 5.35 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) than stretching (34.39 ± 5.39 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)). No other time points were different. Our results demonstrate that static stretching yielded an acute increase in submaximal VO2; therefore, coaches and highly trained endurance cyclists should exclude static stretching immediately before moderate intensity cycling because it reduces acute cycling economy. 相似文献

Aims
To assess whether the yew roots, which are able to provide a very constant environment due to their long life-span, can maintain the original arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal community during yew population decline.Methods
The diversity of AM fungi (AMF) colonizing the roots of yew was analyzed by selecting the small subunit ribosomal RNA genes to construct a database of the overall community of AMF in the experimental area. A terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) approach was used to identify the AMF communities present in yew roots. Physiological and environmental variables related to topology and soil and plant characteristics were determined as markers of habitat degradation.Results
The AMF communities within yew roots were found to be dependent on soil, plant and topological variables indicative of habitat degradation surrounding the yew. The phylogenetic diversity of AMF associated to the yews was lower in habitats more exposed to degradation than in those better conserved.Conclusions
The target yews can be grouped into two degradation levels. AMF communities were also affected by the degradation processes affecting their hosts. This finding rules out the role of these trees as refugia for their original AMF community, a fact that should be considered in plant reintroduction programs using AMF as bioenhancers. 相似文献16.
One hundred subjects, males and females with ages ranging between 18 and 48 years, were studied under both field-exposed and sham-exposed conditions. A 50 Hz, 100 μT magnetic field (MF) was used. To examine the effect of field exposure on performance, a two-alternative, forced-choice, duration-discrimination task with three levels of difficulty was used. The subject's task was to decide which of two sequentially presented light flashes had the longer duration. The standard duration was 50 ms, and the alternative durations were 65, 100, or 125 ms. Both reaction time and percentage of correct responses were recorded for each subject. MF and sham exposure were for 9 min each. Blood pressure and heart rate were also measured before and following MF exposure and sham-exposure trials. The study was performed double blind, with the exposure order counterbalanced. Compared to sham exposure, MF exposure significantly decreased reaction time on the hardest level of the performance task. MF exposure did not reliably affect percentage correct or cardiovascular performance. It was demonstrated that a relatively high level of statistical power was the basis for the observed MF effect, and the need to pay closer attention to power levels in future research is discussed. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Intense magnetic fields have been shown to affect memory-related behaviours of rodents. A series of experiments was performed to investigate further the effects of a 50 Hz magnetic field on the foraging behaviour of adult, male C57BL/6J mice performing a spatial learning task in an eight-arm radial maze. Exposure to vertical, sinusoidal magnetic fields between 7.5 μT and 7.5 mT for 45 min immediately before daily testing sessions caused transient decreases in performance that depended on the applied flux density. Exposure above a threshold of between 7.5 and 75 μT significantly increased the number of errors the animals made and reduced the rate of acquisition of the task without any effect on overall accuracy. However, the imposition of a 45-minute delay between exposure at 0.75 mT and behavioural testing resulted in the elimination of any deficit. Similarly, exposure to fields between 7.5 μT and 0.75 mT for 45 min each day for 4 days after training had no amnesic effects on the retention and subsequent performance of the task. Overall, these results provide additional evidence that 50 Hz magnetic fields may cause subtle changes in the processing of spatial information in mice. Although these effects appear dependent on field strength, even at high flux densities the field-induced deficits tend to be transient and reversible. Previous reports of faster responses to threatening compared to benign stimuli in visual search tasks have argued that threatening targets are faster to engage and slower to disengage attention than benign targets. This study reinterprets previous findings and resolves inconsistencies in the literature by replacing the theory of differential disengagement of attention with one of differential caution. It also examines whether visual attentional mechanisms are sensitive to more than just the threatening versus benign categorical status of the targets and introduces a novel measure (a caution score) that appears to be sensitive to the level of threat implied by the target image, but immune to other stimulus features (target-distracter similarity and threat status of distracters) known to affect reaction time. As well as locating threatening targets faster than benign targets, participants were also faster, more accurate, and more cautious to detect lethal spiders compared to nonlethal spiders and even more cautious again if the spiders were presented on a person's hand. These results suggest that mechanisms of attention and threat evaluation interact during visual search tasks, producing behaviour that is sensitive to the target's implied threat level and the context in which that target is presented. 相似文献

The effect of a concurrent task on timing performance of pigeons was investigated with the peak interval procedure. Birds were trained to peck a side key on a discrete-trial schedule that included reinforced fixed-interval (FI) 30-s trials and nonreinforced extended probe trials. Then, in separate sessions, birds were trained to peck a 6-s center key for food. In a subsequent test phase, the FI procedure was in effect along with dual-task probe test trials. On those test trials, the 6-s center key (task cue) was presented at 3, 9, or 15s after probe trial onset. During another test phase, a 6-s gap (the FI keylight was extinguished) was presented at 3, 9, or 15s after probe trial onset. Peak time increased with center key time of onset, and was greater under task than gap conditions. Moreover, peak time under task conditions exceeded values predicted by stop and reset clock mechanisms. These results are at variance with current attentional accounts of timing behavior in dual-task conditions, and suggest a role of nontemporal factors in the control of timing behavior. 相似文献

High-pressure processing (HPP) is a nonthermal process capable of inactivating and eliminating pathogenic and food spoilage microorganisms. This novel technology has enormous potential in the food industry, controlling food spoilage, improving food safety and extending product shelf life while retaining the characteristics of fresh, preservative-free, minimally processed foods. As with other food processing methods, such as thermal processing, HPP has somewhat limited applications as it cannot be universally applied to all food types, such as some dairy and animal products and shelf-stable low-acid foods.
