Morphology of two endemic eastern Pacific species of eelpouts—blackbelly Lycodes pacificus Collett, 1879 and bigfin L. cortezianus Gilbert, 1891—were studied. It was shown that these two species are characterized by unreduced seismosensory system of the head and belong to a species group with a double lateral line. It was suggested that the ancestral form of this species group could have possibly dispersed in the Atlantic Ocean through the Panama Canal in the pre-Pleistocene time. It is likely that the antitropical distribution of the Newfoundland eelpout L. terranovae is related this event.  相似文献

Based on the data from six bottom trawl surveys carried out on the shelf of the Sea of Okhotsk in 1997–2007, the features of the distribution, size and sex structure, and food composition of the notched-fin (east) eelpout Zoarces elongatus were analyzed. It was established that this species regularly occurs in trawl catches only in the eastern part of the sea and that the density of its schools decreases with depth. It was recorded that females of the notched-fin eelpout are larger than males. The sex ratio of the fishes varies from year to year. Females prevail at depths less than 25 m and males prevail at depths greater than 25 m.  相似文献

Acute, short term cooling of North Sea eelpout Zoarces viviparus is associated with a reduction of tissue redox state and activation of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-1) in the liver. The present study explores the response of HIF-1 to seasonal cold in Zoarces viviparus, and to latitudinal cold by comparing the eurythermal North Sea fish to stenothermal Antarctic eelpout (Pachycara brachycephalum). Hypoxic signalling (HIF-1 DNA binding activity) was studied in liver of summer and winter North Sea eelpout as well as of Antarctic eelpout at habitat temperature of 0°C and after long-term warming to 5°C. Biochemical parameters like tissue iron content, glutathione redox ratio, and oxidative stress indicators were analyzed to see whether the cellular redox state or reactive oxygen species formation and HIF activation in the fish correlate. HIF-1 DNA binding activity was significantly higher at cold temperature, both in the interspecific comparison, polar vs. temperate species, and when comparing winter and summer North Sea eelpout. Compared at the low acclimation temperatures (0°C for the polar and 6°C for the temperate eelpout) the polar fish showed lower levels of lipid peroxidation although the liver microsomal fraction turned out to be more susceptible to lipid radical formation. The level of radical scavenger, glutathione, was twofold higher in polar than in North Sea eelpout and also oxidised to over 50%. Under both conditions of cold exposure, latitudinal cold in the Antarctic and seasonal cold in the North Sea eelpout, the glutathione redox ratio was more oxidised when compared to the warmer condition. However, oxidative damage parameters (protein carbonyls and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were elevated only during seasonal cold exposure in Z. viviparus. Obviously, Antarctic eelpout are keeping oxidative defence mechanisms high enough to avoid accumulation of oxidative damage products at low habitat temperature. Adolf’s eelpout, Lycodes adolfi, was found at five bottom trawl stations in 2007–2009, on the slope towards the Sofia Deep north of Spitsbergen, at depths of 970–1,220 m and water temperatures below 0°C. Previously, the species has been known from cold and deep waters south of 74°N to both sides of Greenland and in the Norwegian Sea. The present material represents the first records from the Arctic Ocean and may indicate a wider arctic distribution of this species.  相似文献

The systematics of the eelpout genus Bothrocara Bean 1890 is reviewed on the basis of 941 specimens. Eight mostly eurybathic, demersal species are recognized, distributed mainly along the continental slopes of the North and South Pacific oceans, with one species entering the South Atlantic. Distributions are: B. brunneum ranges from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Gulf of Panama at depths of 199–1,829 m; B. elongatum ranges from the Gulf of Panama to Chile at depths of 720–1,866 m; B. hollandi ranges from the Sea of Japan to the southeastern Bering Sea at depths of 150–1,980 m; B. molle ranges from the western Bering Sea to the South Atlantic at depths of 106–2,688 m; B. nyx is known only from the eastern Bering Sea at depths of 790–1,508 m; B. pusillum ranges from the northern Bering Sea to British Columbia, Canada, at depths of 55–642 m; B. tanakae is found along the northern coasts of Honshu and Hokkaido islands, Japan, at depths of 274–892 m; B. zestum ranges from the Izu Islands, Japan, and central Honshu, Japan, to the Gulf of Alaska at depths of 199–1,620 m (an unidentifiable specimen from off Taiwan may be B. zestum). The species are distinguished from one another mainly on the basis of head pore patterns, gill raker morphology, coloration and various meristic and morphometric values. Type III antifreeze proteins (AFP III) in the Antarctic eelpout Lycodichthys dearborni contain at least two size variants—a 7-kDa protein family and a specific 14-kDa isoform composed of two 7-kDa domains linked in tandem. We report the characterization of a two-domain AFP III gene from L. dearborni, and propose that the two-domain AFP III gene arose from a single-domain AFP III gene through duplication and degeneration. AT-rich regions played an important role in the degeneration of the duplicated AFP III gene that resulted in the concatenation of two originally separated 7-kDa AFP-coding exons into a single gene. We also identified a pseudo-AFP III gene interrupted at an AT-rich coding region, supporting AT-rich regions as hotspots for DNA recombination in AFP III gene evolution. Interestingly, study of AFP III genes in the related Antarctic eelpout Pachycara brachycephalum showed absence of two- and multi-domain AFP III genes, indicating that modes of AFP III gene family evolution are specific within species. On the basis of standard trawl survey made at the shores of the Republic of Korea in the Sea of Japan, species composition, ratio of species in catches, and size composition of eelpouts (fam. Zoarcidae) at depths 123–330 m is analyzed. Five species of eelpouts are found in the investigated region: Bothocara hollandi, Lycodes nakamurae, L. sadoensis, L. tanakae, and Petroschmidtia toyamensis. For the first time for the south-western part of the Sea of Japan, quantitative characteristics of distribution, size composition, and bottom temperature of capture are reported for each eelpout species. L. sadoensis is a common species in this region.  相似文献

Abstract-Molecular genetic and morphological analysis of eelpouts of the genus Zoarces was carried out. Based on the mitochondrial DNA sequence variation, haplotypes of notched-fin eelpout, Z. elogatus, more closely related Fedorov eelpout, Z. fedorovi, and common eelpout, Z. viviparus, as well as of Andriyashev eelpout, Z. andriashevi, were grouped in one macrocluster. Haplotypes of American eelpout, Z. americanus, and blotched eelpout, Z. gillii, clustered separately from other species. The genetic differences between Z. gillii and the other eelpout species were very high for within-genus comparisons, constituting 7.62%. Species divergence in terms of morphological characters was generally consistent with molecular genetic data and confirmed distinct isolation of American eelpout, and especially of blotched eelpout.  相似文献

Liparidae from stomachs of Antarctic toothfish Dissostichus mawsoni Norman, 1937 (Nototheniidae) caught in the Ross Sea (Pacific sector of Antarctica) have been identified. Two new species of deep-water liparids of the genus Paraliparis Collett, 1879—P. caninus sp. nov. (at a depth of 1182–1651 m) and P. vipera sp. nov. (1700 m)—were described. Both species that turned out to be most similar to P. neelovi Andriashev, 1982, from the Kerguelen area (the Indo-Oceanic sector of the South Ocean) are combined with it into a species group “P. neelovi.” According to meristic characters, pattern of dentition, and the size of gill opening, species of “P. neelovi” are close to the species group “P. copei.” In collections from a depth of 1700 m, also two individuals of P. andriashevi Stein et Tompkins, 1989, known previously from only two types from the northern boundary of the Ross Sea were found. The new finding supports species validity and extends the known limits of its range. The wide distribution of bathybenthal Paraliparis having low fecundity and leading a near-bottom mode of life can be explained by the presence of mesopelagic juveniles and their dispersal via currents.  相似文献

Capacities and effects of cold or warm acclimation were investigated in two zoarcid species from the North Sea (Zoarces viviparus) and the Antarctic (Pachycara brachycephalum) by investigating temperature dependent mitochondrial respiration and activities of citrate synthase (CS) and NADP+ -dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) in the liver. Antarctic eelpout were acclimated to 5°C and 0°C (controls) for at least 10 months, whereas boreal eelpout, Z. viviparus (North Sea) were acclimated to 5°C and to 10°C (controls). Liver sizes were found to be increased in both species in the cold, with a concomitant rise in liver mitochondrial protein content. As a result, total liver state III rates were elevated in both cold-versus and warm-exposed P. brachycephalum and Z. viviparus, with the highest rates in boreal eelpout acclimated to 5°C. CS and IDH activities in the total liver were similar in Z. viviparus acclimated to 5°C and 10°C, but decreased in those warm acclimated versus control P. brachycephalum. Enzyme capacities in the total liver were higher in eelpout from Antarctica than those from the North Sea. In conclusion, cold compensation of aerobic capacities in the liver seems to be linked to an increase in organ size with unchanged specific mitochondrial protein content. Despite its life in permanently cold climate, P. brachycephalum was able to reduce liver aerobic capacities in warm climate and thus, displayed a capacity for temperature acclimation.  相似文献

For the first time, under laboratory conditions, development of the polychaete Namanereis littoralis (Grube, 1876) is investigated. Under conditions of the Sea of Japan, its reproduction occurs in July and is confined to the season of monsoon rains. Fertilization is external. Spawning manifests no epitocous transformations. Fecundity is low, ovicells are rich in yolk, and development is nonpelagic, lecithotrophic, embryonized, characterized by a high rate—5–8 days—and occurs in mucous clutches up to hatching of benthic juveniles. Temperature and salinity optima of development are 22–27°C and 16–21‰, respectively, characterizing the species as subtropical brackish-water by its origin. Archaic and specialized traits are noted in the early ontogenesis of N. littoralis.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of variability of seven microsatellite loci—Gmo3, Gmo-G12, Gmo-G18, Gmo19, Gmo34, Gmo35 and Pgmo32—was performed for the Greenland cod Gadus ogac, Pacific cod G. macrocephalus, Atlantic cod G. morhua, and White Sea cod G. morhua marisalbi. High genetic identity was observed between the Greenland cod and Pacific cod (I = 0.9520). Pair analysis of genetic differentiation was performed on the studied microsatellite loci according to θ (analogue of F ST). The Greenland cod differed significantly from the Pacific, Atlantic, and the White Sea cod; however, the differentiation level varied. The lowest value was observed for the pair Greenland cod-Pacific cod (0.123), and the highest levels were registered for the pairs Greenland cod-Atlantic cod (0.605) and Greenland cod-White Sea cod (0.535).  相似文献

For the first time, the genus Cocotropus is recorded from the South China Sea and in the Vietnam fauna. Two new species are described—C. astakhovi and C. eksae spp. n. They are compared in detail with 14 previously known species of this genus. The fauna of velvet-fishes of Vietnam is revised. Previously noted for Vietnam Paraploactis sp. is attributed to C. astakhovi.  相似文献

The results of long-term research on the biology of the viviparous Fedorov eelpout Zoarces fedorovi from the Tauiskaya Guba in the Sea of Okhotsk are generalized. It was determined that in winter and spring this species inhabits strongly freshened sea areas and in summer and fall it inhabits, as a rule, estuarine areas in the tide effect zone. Z. fedorovi did not leave the coastal zone, even during the ebb, and could remain in colder fresh water up to 12 h a day. Data on the age, sexual and size structure of the catches, character of linear growth, increase in body mass and fecundity, size, as well as the growth rates of the larvae and fry during prenatal development of Z. fedorovi are cited.  相似文献

The mitochondrial COI gene was for the first time sequenced in eelpout species of the genus Zoarces from the Taui Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk: notched-fin Z. elongatus Kner, 1868 and the new sympatric form Zoarces sp., differing in a large set of morphological traits. The two species were compared with European eelpout Z. viviparus Linnaeus, 1758 from the Finnish Bay of the Baltic Sea. Divergence and phylogenetic analyses demonstrated a greater genetic similarity between Zoarces sp. and Z. viviparus than between sympatric Zoarces sp. and Z. elongatus.  相似文献

Species diversity and distribution—in relation with biogeography, bathymetry and environmental characteristics—within the genus Acantholaimus were investigated on the shelf and slope (182–2,009 m) in the Weddell Sea (Kapp Norvegia and Vestkapp) and near the Antarctic Peninsula (Drake Passage and Bransfield Strait). The occurrence of the otherwise typical deep-sea genus Acantholaimus in high densities and diversity on the continental shelf is a unique feature of the Southern Ocean. Fifty-five Acantholaimus species (morpho-types) were distinguished in our study area, of which 39 were found on the shelf. The Acantholaimus communities were characterised by a high number of congeneric species and the presence of many rare species, similar to typical deep-sea communities. Fourteen species had a distribution extending from the shelf to the lower slope. High local and regional diversity was obvious and a considerable level of endemism was suggested. A negative impact of chlorophyll a concentrations, reflecting the availability of phytoplankton, was found on the Acantholaimus densities and species diversity.  相似文献
