Summary The Drosophila fauna of a deciduous flood plain forest rich in undergrowth near the river Isar, close to Munich, Germany, was surveyed in summer 1990. Decaying herbage baits (decay artificially induced) were set out to study the exploitation of that resource by Drosophila. Sixteen plant species belonging to several families dominant in the collecting area were tested. All attracted and produced drosophilid flies. Ten Drosophila species utilized decaying plant material as breeding sites; at least eight of the ten are polyphagous. Decaying stalks and leaves of Angelica sylvestris (Apiaceae) were examined in detail. In the case of the most frequent species of Drosophila attracted to A. sylvestris, the number of adults collected did not correlate with the number of flies emerging from the substrate. This was particularly true of D. limbata and D. phalerata. When oviposition and larval development of D. limbata and D. phalerata on A. sylvestris was tested in the laboratory, the number of offspring per female was the same in both species. The difference between these two species of the quinaria group in the exploitation of A. sylvestris in the field is therefore not due to differential suitability of the substrate.  相似文献

Summary The associations shown between species of Drosophila collected in three European countries are analysed using a clustering method. The resulting dendrograms are combined to give a plan of associations shown by all three surveys. These general groupings are interpreted in the light of what is known about Drosophila breeding sites. One ecological group, the fungal breeding species are examined in detail and their pattern of geographical associations investigated. The three most abundant species in collections, D. transversa, D. phalerata and D. cameraria appear to replace one another in a north-south direction in western Europe. It is suggested that ecologically marginal areas may be defined using the frequency of a species within its ecological group.  相似文献

Approximately one-half of the members of the Drosophila quinaria species-group are mycophagous. The mushroom-breeding species D. falleni, D. recens, and D. phalerata are far more tolerant of the mushroom toxin α-amanitin than are D. guinaria, D. palustris, and D. subpalustris, which breed in decaying water plants. The non-mycophagous species, however, are physiologically capable of larval development in mushrooms, showing that high levels of amanitin tolerance are not necessary for mycophagy. A primary selective advantage of amanitin tolerance among the mycophagous species is that it allows them to breed in mushrooms that are toxic to nematodes that infest Drosophila in other fungi and render them infertile. Parasitism, then, may be an important factor governing evolutionary patterns of resource utilization in these species.  相似文献

Sexual isolation has been considered one of the primary causes of speciation and its genetic study has the potential to reveal the genetics of speciation. In Drosophila, the importance of courtship songs in sexual isolation between closely related species has been well investigated, but studies analysing the genetic basis of the difference in the courtship songs associated with sexual isolation are less well documented. Drosophila ananassae and Drosophila pallidosa are useful for studies of sexual isolation, because of their sympatric distribution and absence of postmating isolation. Courtship songs are known to play a crucial role in sexual isolation between these two species, and the female discrimination behaviour against the courting male has been revealed to be controlled by a very narrow region on the second chromosome. In this study we investigated the genetic basis controlling the song differences associated with their sexual isolation, using intact and wingless males with chromosomes substituted between species. The results obtained from F1 hybrid males between these species indicate the dominance of the song characters favoured by D. pallidosa females. In addition, the results obtained from backcross F2 males indicate that chromosome 2 had a major effect on the control of the song characters associated with sexual isolation.  相似文献

Summary The distributions of five Drosophila species and four components of the microflora have been compared across a total of 48 traps baited with four different fruit and vegetable substrates in two domestic compost heaps in Canberra (Australia). Large and consistent differences are found, both among the Drosophila and among the microbial classes, in their distributions across traps baited with different substrates. Moreover the distribution of each Drosophila species shows a unique set of strong associations with the microbial distributions. Thus the distributions of both D. simulans and D. melanogaster are found to be strongly negatively correlated with the abundance of bacteria while D. simulans is also strongly positively correlated with the titre of fermenter yeasts. D. immigrans is strongly positively correlated both with bacteria and with non-fermenter yeasts. D. hydei is positively correlated with nonfermentery yeasts and D. busckii is negatively correlated with fermenter yeasts. Moulds are the only microbial class not consistently associated with the distribution of any of the Drosophila species. The correlations with the other microbial classes are sufficient to explain the majority of the abundance differences of the Drosophila species among the trap types. It is therefore proposed that the clear partitioning of the fruit resources by the Drosophila is due to their differing primary interactions with the microflora.  相似文献

Genes found to affect male courtship song characters in Drosophila melanogaster are good candidates when tracing genes responsible for species-specific songs in other Drosophila species. It has previously been shown that Thr–Gly repeat length variation at the period gene affects song traits in D. melanogaster, which gives the repetitive regions a special interest. In this work, we have characterised the patterns of nucleotide variation for gene regions containing two Gly and one Gln–Ala repeat in another D. melanogaster song gene, no-on-transient A, in D. virilis group species. The levels of nucleotide variability in D. virilis nonA were similar to those found for other genes of the species, and the gene sequences showed no signs of deviation from neutrality. The Gly 2 repeat preceding the central domain of the gene exhibited length variation, which did not, however, correlate with song variation either within D. virilis or between the species of D. virilis group. The Gly 3 repeat located on the other side of the central domain showed amino acid divergence parallel to the consensus phylogeny of the D. virilis group species. The species of the virilis subgroup having Asn after the first three glycines in this repeat have simple songs with no species-specificity, while the species of the montana subgroup having two Gly or Asn–Ser in this site have unique courtship songs. Amino acid differences between the species in this repeat may, however, reflect species phylogeny rather than have an effect on song divergence per se.  相似文献

Temporal analyses were applied to the tone pulses within the courtship songs of Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, their interspecific hybrid, and behavioral mutants of D. melanogaster.Linear regression was performed on various parameters of the song pulses (cycles per pulse, absolute peak amplitude, intrapulse frequency, number of peaks in fast Fourier transform, width of the primary frequency peak, and interpulse interval), as a function of their positions within pulse trains. Significant differences in the slope values of these two species and of the mutant genotypes allowed for discriminative quantification of temporal changes within trains. These results are discussed in relation to previous kinds of temporal analyses of Drosophilacourtship songs and also with regard to the mechanisms of song production.  相似文献

Summary Decaying petioles of giant hogweed,Heracleum mantegazzianum Sommier & Levier, are used as a breeding site by six species ofDrosophila and the drosophilidScaptomyza pallida. The most numerous parasitoid species associated with this community isLeptopilina australis. BecauseL. australis was previously unknown in western Europe, we present the characters to distinguish it form its close relativeL. clavipes. Experiments on host species selection and survival ofL. australis showed that this parasitoid mainly usesD. limbata as host. Olfactometer experiments showed thatL. australis is attracted by the odour of decaying hogweed stalks, especially when these contain larvae ofD. limbata. L. australis is also strongly attracted by the odour of stinkhorns, a habitat in which it has never been found in nature.D. phalerata is the dominant fly species in stinkhorns, and is not a host ofL. australis. We offer a possible functional explanation for this unexpected habitat choice, by showing thatD. transversa andD. kuntzei, both species found to breed in fungi, are also suitable hosts forL. australis. We also discuss habitat choice with regard to a proposed phylogeny of theLeptopilina species in temperate Europe. Finally, we discuss niche overlap ofL. australis with the otherLeptopilina species.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 The distribution and abundance of five Drosophila species breeding in fungi are examined by attracting adult flies to baited traps and collecting fungal fruit bodies containing the larval stages.
  • 2 Changes in species frequency follow a temporal (seasonal and yearly), rather than a spatial (between and within woods) pattern.
  • 3 There is a regular diurnal pattern of activity in D.subobscura but not in D.phalerata. Temperature, light intensity, humidity and wind speed have no effect upon the daily activity of D.phalerata. Only temperature affects the activity of D.subobscura.
  • 4 Out of 125 species of fungi collected, only forty-eight species produced Drosophila. However, the flies are even more selective, since only five species of fungi (Phallus impudicus, Polyporus squamosus, Amanita rubescens, Pluteus cervinus and Lactarius quietus) produce 80% of all Drosophila reared.
  • 5 The commonest species, D.phalerata, has two or three generations per year with a winter diapause. An outline of the yearly life cycle is given, with the major breeding sites for each generation indicated.
  • 6 Measures of niche overlap calculated from the data on individual fruit bodies are very low, suggesting that the five species are effectively isolated during the larval period. This ecological isolation is achieved by a summation of several niche dimensions, woodlands, seasons, fungal species, and individual fruiting body differences.

The courtship song of Drosophila has been extensively used as a model system for studies of sexual selection and species recognition. Traditionally, the courtship song has been recorded from males placed individually with a female. However, under natural conditions females are exposed to multiple courting males, and the effect of their joint signal on mate recognition by the female is not yet understood. Here, we recorded the courtship behavior of D. melanogaster males singing either individually to a female lpar;1:1) or in the presence of an additional male lpar;2:1). We compared the structure of the male song in the two experimental designs. Our results show that when two males courted a female their songs could overlap each other. Males produced a significantly different signal in the presence of competition; the duration of each song component was significantly shorter and the rate of singing was markedly lower. The present study demonstrates that male competition can dramatically alter the acoustic signal detected by the female.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Seasonal reproductive development was investigated in four obligate fungivorous species, D.phalerata Meigen, D.transversa Fallen, D.cameraria Haliday and D.confusa Staeger.
  • 2 Samples of females taken from woodlands over a 2 year period were scored for reproductive status and fat content.
  • 3 Populations of D.phalerata and D.cameraria maintained in an outdoor insectary provided information on developmental time and adult mortality throughout the year.
  • 4 Experiments in controlled environmental chambers gave percentage diapause curves against day length for all four species.
  • 5 In D.phalerata the influence of temperature and fungus upon diapause behaviour was also investigated.
  • 6 In D.phalerata the optimal strategy for reproductive development can vary from month to month. Maturation of females may be immediate, dependent upon a fungal cue or completely prevented.

InDrosophila montana andD. littoralis (species of theD. virilis group), females use male courtship song in their mate choice in wild preferring males which produce short and dense sound pulses (Aspi and Hoikkala, 1995). In the present study these song characters were found to be repeatable among overwintered males. Male progenies of wild-caught flies reared in the laboratory, and inD. montana also the males collected in wild before overwintering, exhibited very little variation between males in these characters. Contrary to pulse characters, pulse train characters measured forD. montana song varied significantly between laboratory-reared males. Our findings suggest that inD. montana andD. littoralis song characters playing a part in sexual selection in the wild are more condition dependent than song characters which are not the direct targets of female choice.  相似文献

Intron loss and its evolutionary significance have been noted in Drosophila. The current study provides another example of intron loss within a single-copy Dfak gene in Drosophila. By using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we amplified about 1.3 kb fragment spanning intron 5–10, located in the position of Tyr kinase (TyK) domain of Dfak gene from Drosophila melanogaster species group, and observed size difference among the amplified DNA fragments from different species. Further sequencing analysis revealed that D. melanogaster and D. simulans deleted an about 60 bp of DNA fragment relative to other 7 Drosophila species, such as D. elegans, D. ficusphila, D. biarmipes, D. takahashii, D. jambulina, D. prostipennis and D. pseudoobscura, and the deleted fragment located precisely in the position of one intron. The data suggested that intron loss might have occurred in the Dfak gene evolutionary process of D. melanogaster and D. simulans of Drosophila melanogaster species group. In addition, the constructed phylogenetic tree based on the Dfak TyK domains clearly revealed the evolutionary relationships between subgroups of Drosophila melanogaster species group, and the intron loss identified from D. melanogaster and D. simulans provides a unique diagnostic tool for taxonomic classification of the melanogaster subgroup from other group of genus Drosophila.  相似文献

Summary At two locations in the Sonoran Desert, yeasts were sampled from species of Drosophila, the flies' cactus hosts, and other neighboring sources of cactophilic yeasts to determine the relation between the yeasts vectored by the fly and the yeasts found in their breeding sites. D. mojavensis, D. nigrospiracula, and D. mettleri vectored yeast assemblages significantly more similar to the yeast species found on the rot from which the flies were collected than to the yeasts found on other rots from the flies host cactus or other rotting cactus at the same site. Rots with Drosophila had fewer yeast species than those without flies, suggesting that flies were associated with younger rots. Rots with flies and the Drosophila also had more yeast species with the capability to produce ethyl acetate than rots without flies. The results support the contention that cactophilic Drosophila feed on a subset of the yeasts available in an area, and may act to maintain differences among the yeast communities found on different species of cactus.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships among nine entities of Drosophila belonging to the D. willistoni subgroup were investigated by establishing the homologous chromosomal segments of IIR chromosome, Muller’s element B (equivalent to chromosome 2L of D. melanogaster). The sibling species of the D. willistoni group investigated include D. willistoni, D. tropicalis tropicalis, D. tropicalis cubana, D. equinoxialis, D. insularis and four semispecies of the D. paulistorum complex. The phylogenetic relationships were based on the existence of segments in different triads of species, which could only be produced by overlapping inversions. Polytene banding similarity maps and break points of inversions between species are presented. The implications of the chromosomal data for the phylogeny of the species and comparisons with molecular data are discussed. The aim of this study is to produce phylogenetic trees depicting accurately the sequence of natural events that have occurred in the evolution of these sibling species. The Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1) is a conserved protein which is best known for its strong association with the heterochromatin of Drosophila melanogaster. We previously demonstrated that another important property of HP1 is its localization to the telomeres of Drosophila, a feature that reflects its critical function as a telomere capping protein. Here we report our analysis of the euchromatic sites to which HP1 localizes. Using an anti-HP1 antibody, we compared immunostaining patterns on polytene chromosomes of the Ore-R wild type laboratory strain and four different natural populations. HP1 was found to accumulate at specific euchromatic sites, with a subset of the sites conserved among strains. These sites do not appear to be defined by an enrichment of known repetitive DNAs. Comparisons of HP1 patterns among several Drosophila species revealed that association with specific euchromatic regions, heterochromatin and telomeres is a conserved characteristic of HP1. Based on these results, we argue that HP1 serves a broader function than typically postulated. In addition to its role in heterochromatin assembly and telomere stability, we propose that HP1 plays an important role in regulating the expression of many different euchromatic regions.  相似文献

We analyzed 28 species of the genus Drosophilafor the presence of the Tc1-like transposable element Minosusing Southern blot hybridization under high stringency conditions. The Minostransposon was found in members of both the Drosophilaand the Sophophorasubgenus showing a distribution that is wider if compared to other well-studied Drosophilatransposons such as the Pelement, hoboand mariner. The presence of Minos-hybridizing sequences was discontinuous in the Sophophorasubgenus, especially in the melanogasterspecies group. Using the Polymerase Chain Reaction we amplified a portion corresponding to the putative Minostransposase from different Drosophilaspecies. Cloning and sequence analysis of randomly selected Minoscopies from D. mojavensisis, D. saltansand D. willistonisupports the idea that event(s) of horizontal transfer may have contributed to the spreading of this transposon in the Drosophilagenus. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

DNA methylation has been studied abundantly in vertebrates and recent evidence confirms that this phenomenon could be disseminated among some invertebrates groups, including Drosophila species. In this paper, we used the Methylation-Sensitive Restriction Endonuclease (MSRE) technique and Southern blot with specific probes, to detect methylation in the Drosophila willistoni species. We found differential cleavage patterns between males and females that cannot be explained by Mendelian inheritance, pointing to a DNA methylation phenomenon different from the Drosophila melanogaster one. The sequencing of some of these bands showed that these fragments were formed by different DNA elements, among which rDNA. We also characterized the D. willitoni dDnmt2 sequence, through a Mega Blast search against the D. willistoni Trace Archive Database using the D. melanogaster dDnmt2 nucleotide sequence as query. The complete analysis of D. willistoni dDnmt2 sequence showed that its promoter region is larger, its dDnmt2 nucleotide sequence is 33% divergent from the D. melanogaster one, Inverted Terminal Repeats (ITRs) are absent and only the B isoform of the enzyme is produced. In contrast, ORF2 is more conserved. Comparing the D. willistoni and D. melanogaster dDnmt2 protein sequences, we found higher conservation in motifs from the large domain, responsible for the catalysis of methyl transfer, and great variability in the region that carries out the recognition of specific DNA sequences (TRD). Globally, our results reveal that methylation of the D. willistoni genome could be involved in a singular process of species-specific dosage compensation and that the DNA methylation in the Drosophila genus can have diverse functions. This could be related to the evolutionary history of each species and also to the acquisition time of the dDnmt2 gene.  相似文献

Summary The yolk proteins stored in Drosophila, oocytes for utilisation during embryogenesis are an ideal system for studying the regulation of gene expression during development. The 3 major polypeptides found in yolk in D. melanogaster are synthesised in the fat body and ovarian follicle cells and selectively accumulated by the oocyte during vitellogenesis. In order to understand more about their regulation and the mechanism of uptake, studies on other species are necessary.Three yolk polypeptides have previously been identified in the D. melanogaster sibling species (D. melanogaster, D. simulans, D. mauritiana, D. erecta, D. teissieri, D. orena and D. yakuba). In D. melanogaster three genes located on the X chromosome are known to code for these yolk polypeptides. in this study genomic Southern transfers and in situ hybridisation experiments were carried out on the sibling species. Using the three cloned yolk protein genes from D. melanogaster, homologous sequences could be detected in the sibling species. It is suggested that three yolk protein genes occur in each of these species, all being located on the X chromosome, and that two of the genes are very closely linked in these same species. Yolk protein gene-homologous DNA sequences have also been identified in two more distantly related species D. funebris and D. virilis.  相似文献
