Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L. cv. Florunner) was grown from seed sowing to plant maturity under two daytime CO2 concentrations ([CO2]) of 360 μmol mol−1 (ambient) and 720 μmol mol−1 (elevated) and at two temperatures of 1.5 and 6.0 °C above ambient temperature. The objectives were to characterize peanut leaf photosynthesis responses to long-term elevated growth [CO2] and temperature, and to assess whether elevated [CO2] regulated peanut leaf photosynthetic capacity, in terms of activity and protein content of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco), Rubisco photosynthetic efficiency, and carbohydrate metabolism. At both growth temperatures, leaves of plants grown under elevated [CO2] had higher midday photosynthetic CO2 exchange rate (CER), lower transpiration and stomatal conductance and higher water-use efficiency, compared to those of plants grown at ambient [CO2]. Both activity and protein content of Rubisco, expressed on a leaf area basis, were reduced at elevated growth [CO2]. Declines in Rubisco under elevated growth [CO2] were 27–30% for initial activity, 5–12% for total activity, and 9–20% for protein content. Although Rubisco protein content and activity were down-regulated by elevated [CO2], Rubisco photosynthetic efficiency, the ratio of midday light-saturated CER to Rubisco initial or total activity, of the elevated-[CO2] plants was 1.3- to 1.9-fold greater than that of the ambient-[CO2] plants at both growth temperatures. Leaf soluble sugars and starch of plants grown at elevated [CO2] were 1.3- and 2-fold higher, respectively, than those of plants grown at ambient [CO2]. Under elevated [CO2], leaf soluble sugars and starch, however, were not affected by high growth temperature. In contrast, high temperature reduced leaf soluble sugars and starch of the ambient-[CO2] plants. Activity of sucrose-P synthase, but not adenosine 5′-diphosphoglucose pyrophosphorylase, was up-regulated under elevated growth [CO2]. Thus, in the absence of other environmental stresses, peanut leaf photosynthesis would perform well under rising atmospheric [CO2] and temperature as predicted for this century.  相似文献

Soybean (Glycine max [L.] cv Bragg) was grown at 330 or 660 microliters CO2 per liter in outdoor, controlled-environment chambers. When the plants were 50 days old, drought stress was imposed by gradually reducing irrigation each evening so that plants wilted earlier each succeeding day. On the ninth day, as the pots ran out of water CO2 exchange rate (CER) decreased rapidly to near zero for the remainder of the day. Both CO2-enrichment and drought stress reduced the total (HCO3/Mg2+-activated) extractable ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase) activity, as expressed on a chlorophyll basis. In addition, drought stress when canopy CER values and leaf water potentials were lowest, reduced the initial (nonactivated) RuBPCase activity by 50% compared to the corresponding unstressed treatments. This suggests that moderate to severe drought stress reduces the in vivo activation state of RuBPCase, as well as lowers the total activity. It is hypothesized that stromal acidification under drought stress causes the lowered initial RuBPCase activities. The Km(CO2) values of activated RuBPCase from stressed and unstressed plants were similar; 15.0 and 12.6 micromolar, respectively. RuBP levels were 10 to 30% lower in drought stressed as compared to unstressed treatments. However, RuBP levels increased from near zero at night to around 150 to 200 nanomoles per milligram chlorophyll during the day, even as water potentials and canopy CERs decreased. This suggests that the rapid decline in canopy CER cannot be attributed to drought stress induced limitations in the RuBP regeneration capability. Thus, in soybean leaves, a nonstomatal limitation of leaf photosynthesis under drought stress conditions appears due, in part, to a reduction of the in vivo activity of RuBPCase. Because initial RuBPCase activities were not reduced as much as canopy CER values, this enzymic effect does not explain entirely the response of soybean photosynthesis to drought stress.  相似文献

Rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. IR-72) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv. Bragg), which have been reported to differ in acclimation to elevated CO2, were grown for a season in sunlight at ambient and twice-ambient [CO2], and under daytime temperature regimes ranging from 28 to 40°C. The objectives of the study were to test whether CO2 enrichment could compensate for adverse effects of high growth temperatures on photosynthesis, and whether these two C3 species differed in this regard. Leaf photosynthetic assimilation rates (A) of both species, when measured at the growth [CO2], were increased by CO2 enrichment, but decreased by supraoptimal temperatures. However, CO2 enrichment more than compensated for the temperature-induced decline in A. For soybean, this CO2 enhancement of A increased in a linear manner by 32–95% with increasing growth temperatures from 28 to 40°C, whereas with rice the degree of enhancement was relatively constant at about 60%, from 32 to 38°C. Both elevated CO2 and temperature exerted coarse control on the Rubisco protein content, but the two species differed in the degree of responsiveness. CO2 enrichment and high growth temperatures reduced the Rubisco content of rice by 22 and 23%, respectively, but only by 8 and 17% for soybean. The maximum degree of Rubisco down-regulation appeared to be limited, as in rice the substantial individual effects of these two variables, when combined, were less than additive. Fine control of Rubisco activation was also influenced by both elevated [CO2] and temperature. In rice, total activity and activation were reduced, but in soybean only activation was lowered. The apparent catalytic turnover rate (Kcat) of rice Rubisco was unaffected by these variables, but in soybean elevated [CO2] and temperature increased the apparent Kcat by 8 and 22%, respectively. Post-sunset declines in Rubisco activities were accelerated by elevated [CO2] in rice, but by high temperature in soybean, suggesting that [CO2] and growth temperature influenced the metabolism of 2-carboxyarabinitol-1-phosphate, and that the effects might be species-specific. The greater capacity of soybean for CO2 enhancement of A at supraoptimal temperatures was probably not due to changes in stomatal conductance, but may be partially attributed to less down-regulation of Rubisco by elevated [CO2] in soybean than in rice. However, unidentified species differences in the temperature optimum for photosynthesis also appeared to be important. The responses of photosynthesis and Rubisco in rice and soybean suggest that among C3 plants species-specific differences will be encountered as a result of future increases in global [CO2] and air temperatures.  相似文献

The response of trees to rising atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) is of concern to forest ecologists and global carbon modellers and is the focus of an increasing body of research work. I review studies published up to May 1994, and several unpublished works, which reported at least one of the following: net CO2 assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf dark respiration (Rd) leaf nitrogen or specific leaf area (SLA) in woody plants grown at <400 μmol mol?1 CO2 or at 600–800 μmol mol?1 CO2. The resulting data from 41 species were categorized according to growth conditions (unstressed versus stressed), length of CO2 exposure, pot size and exposure facility [growth chamber (GC), greenhouse (GH), or open-top chamber (OTC)] and interpreted using meta-analytic methods. Overall, A showed a large and significant increase at elevated [CO2] but length of CO2 exposure and the exposure facility were important modifiers of this response. Plants exposed for < 50 d had a significantly greater response, and those from GCs had a significantly lower response than plants from longer exposures or from OTC studies. Negative acclimation of A was significant and general among stressed plants, but in unstressed plants was influenced by length of CO2 exposure, the exposure facility and/or pot size. Growth at elevated [CO2] resulted in moderate reductions in gs in unstressed plants, but there was no significant effect of CO2 on gs in stressed plants. Leaf dark respiration (mass or area basis) was reduced strongly by growth at high [CO2] > while leaf N was reduced only when expressed on a mass basis. This review is the first meta-analysis of elevated CO2 studies and provides statistical confirmation of several general responses of trees to elevated [CO2]. It also highlights important areas of continued uncertainty in our understanding of these responses.  相似文献

Maize and grain sorghum seeds were sown in pots and grown for 39 days in sunlit controlled-environment chambers at 360 (ambient) and 720 (double-ambient, elevated) μmol mol−1 carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2]. Canopy net photosynthesis (PS) and evapotranspiration (TR) was measured throughout and summarized daily from 08:00 to 17:00 h Eastern Standard Time. Irrigation was withheld from matched pairs of treatments starting on 26 days after sowing (DAS). By 35 DAS, cumulative PS of drought-stress maize, compared to well-watered plants, was 41% lower under ambient [CO2] but only 13% lower under elevated [CO2]. In contrast, by 35 DAS, cumulative PS of drought-stress grain sorghum, compared to well-watered plants, was only 9% lower under ambient [CO2] and 7% lower under elevated [CO2]. During the 27-35 DAS drought period, water use efficiency (WUE, mol CO2 Kmol−1 H2O), was 3.99, 3.88, 5.50, and 8.65 for maize and 3.75, 4.43, 5.26, and 9.94 for grain sorghum, for ambient-[CO2] well-watered, ambient-[CO2] stressed, elevated-[CO2] well-watered and elevated-[CO2] stressed plants, respectively. Young plants of maize and sorghum used water more efficiently at elevated [CO2] than at ambient [CO2], especially under drought. Reductions in biomass by drought for young maize and grain sorghum plants were 42 and 36% at ambient [CO2], compared to 18 and 14% at elevated [CO2], respectively. Results of our water stress experiment demonstrated that maintenance of relatively high canopy photosynthetic rates in the face of decreased transpiration rates enhanced WUE in plants grown at elevated [CO2]. This confirms experimental evidence and conceptual models that suggest that an increase of intercellular [CO2] (or a sustained intercellular [CO2]) in the face of decreased stomatal conductance results in relative increases of growth of C4 plants. In short, drought stress in C4 crop plants can be ameliorated at elevated [CO2] as a result of lower stomatal conductance and sustaining intercellular [CO2]. Furthermore, less water might be required for C4 crops in future higher CO2 atmospheres, assuming weather and climate similar to present conditions.  相似文献

Under CO2-limited conditions such as during stomatal closure, photorespiration is suggested to act as a sink for excess light energy and protect photosystem I (PSI) by oxidizing its reaction center chlorophyll P700. In this study, this issue was directly examined with rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants via genetic manipulation of the amount of Rubisco, which can be a limiting factor for photorespiration. At low [CO2] of 5 Pa that mimicked stomatal closure condition, the activity of photorespiration in transgenic plants with decreased Rubisco content (RBCS-antisense plants) markedly decreased, whereas the activity in transgenic plants with overproduction of Rubisco (RBCS-sense plants) was similar to that in wild-type plants. Oxidation of P700 was enhanced at [CO2] of 5 Pa in wild-type and RBCS-sense plants. PSI was not damaged by excess light stress induced by repetitive saturated pulse-light (rSP) in the presence of strong steady-state light. On the other hand, P700 was strongly reduced in RBCS-antisense plants at [CO2] of 5 Pa. PSI was also damaged by rSP illumination. These results indicate that oxidation of P700 and the robustness of PSI against excess light stress are hampered by the decreased activity of photorespiration as a result of genetic manipulation of Rubisco content. It is also suggested that overproduction of Rubisco does not enhance photorespiration as well as CO2 assimilation probably due to partial deactivation of Rubisco.  相似文献

Abstract. Elevated levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are expected to affect plant performance and may alter global temperature patterns. Changes in mean air temperatures that might be induced by rising levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases could also be accompanied by increased variability in daily temperatures such that acute increases in air temperature may be more likely than at present. Consequently, we investigated whether plants grown in a CO2 enriched atmosphere would be differently affected by a heat shock than plants grown at ambient CO2 levels. Plants of a C3 annual (Abutilon theophrasti), a C3 annual crop (Sinapis alba) and a C4 annual (Amaranthus retroflexus) were grown from seed in growth chambers under either 400 or 700cm3 m?3 CO2, and were fertilized with either a high or low nutrient regime. Young seedlings of S. alba, as well as plants of all species in either the vegetative or reproductive phase of growth were exposed to a 4-h heat shock in which the temperature was raised an additional 14–23°C (depending on plant age). Total biomass and reproductive biomass were examined to determine the effect of CO2, nutrient and heat shock treatments on plant performance. Heat shock, CO2, and nutrient treatments, all had some significant effects on plant performance, but plants from both CO2 treatments responded similarly to heat shocks. We also found, as expected, that plants grown under high CO2 had dramatically decreased tissue N concentrations relative to plants grown under ambient conditions. We predicted that high-CO2-grown plants would be more susceptible to a heat shock than ambient-CO2-grown plants, because the reduced N concentrations of high-CO2 grown plants could result in the reduced synthesis of heat shock proteins and reduced thermotolerance. Although we did not examine heat shock proteins, our results showed little relationship between plant nitrogen status and the ability of a plant to tolerate an acute increase in temperature.  相似文献

Effects of elevated root-zone (RZ) CO2 concentration (RZ [CO2]) and RZ temperature (RZT) on photosynthesis, productivity, nitrate (NO3 ?), total reduced nitrogen (TRN), total leaf soluble and Rubisco proteins were studied in aeroponically grown lettuce plants in a tropical greenhouse. Three weeks after transplanting, four different RZ [CO2] concentrations (ambient, 360 ppm, and elevated concentrations of 2,000; 10,000; and 50,000 ppm) were imposed on plants at 20°C-RZT or ambient(A)-RZT (24–38°C). Elevated RZ [CO2] resulted in significantly higher light-saturated net photosynthetic rate, but lower light-saturated stomatal conductance. Higher elevated RZ [CO2] also protected plants from both chronic and dynamic photoinhibition (measured by chlorophyll fluorescence Fv/Fm ratio) and reduced leaf water loss. Under each RZ [CO2], all these variables were significantly higher in 20°C-RZT plants than in A-RZT plants. All plants accumulated more biomass at elevated RZ [CO2] than at ambient RZ [CO2]. Greater increases of biomass in roots than in shoots were manifested by lower shoot/root ratios at elevated RZ [CO2]. Although the total biomass was higher at 20°C-RZT, the increase in biomass under elevated RZ [CO2] was greater at A-RZT. Shoot NO3 ? and TRN concentrations, total leaf soluble and Rubisco protein concentrations were higher in all elevated RZ [CO2] plants than in plants under ambient RZ [CO2] at both RZTs. Under each RZ [CO2], total leaf soluble and Rubisco protein concentrations were significantly higher at 20°C-RZT than at A-RZT. Our results demonstrated that increased P Nmax and productivity under elevated [CO2] was partially due to the alleviation of midday water loss, both dynamic and chronic photoinhibition as well as higher turnover of Calvin cycle with higher Rubisco proteins.  相似文献

To examine the role of sink size on photosynthetic acclimation under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]), we tested the effects of panicle-removal (PR) treatment on photosynthesis in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Rice was grown at two [CO2] levels (ambient and ambient + 200 μmol mol−1) throughout the growing season, and at full-heading stage, at half the plants, a sink-limitation treatment was imposed by the removal of the panicles. The PR treatment alleviated the reduction of green leaf area, the contents of chlorophyll (Chl) and Rubisco after the full-heading stage, suggesting delay of senescence. Nonetheless, elevated [CO2] decreased photosynthesis (measured at current [CO2]) of plants exposed to the PR treatment. No significant [CO2] × PR interaction on photosynthesis was observed. The decrease of photosynthesis by elevated [CO2] of plants was associated with decreased leaf Rubisco content and N content. Leaf glucose content was increased by the PR treatment and also by elevated [CO2]. In conclusion, a sink-limitation in rice improved N status in the leaves, but this did not prevent the photosynthetic down-regulation under elevated [CO2].  相似文献

The combined effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment and water deficits on nodulation and N2 fixation were analysed in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Two short-term experiments were conducted in greenhouses with plants subjected to soil drying, while exposed to CO2 atmospheres of either 360 or 700 μmol CO2 mol–1. Under drought-stressed conditions, elevated [CO2] resulted in a delay in the decrease in N2 fixation rates associated with drying of the soil used in these experiments. The elevated [CO2] also allowed the plants under drought to sustain significant increases in nodule number and mass relative to those under ambient [CO2]. The total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) concentration was lower in the shoots of the plants exposed to drought; however, plants under elevated CO2 had much higher TNC levels than those under ambient CO2. For both [CO2] treatments, drought stress induced a substantial accumulation of TNC in the nodules that paralleled N2 fixation decline, which indicates that nodule activity under drought may not be carbon limited. Under drought stress, ureide concentration increased in all plant tissues. However, exposure to elevated [CO2] resulted in substantially less drought-induced ureide accumulation in leaf and petiole tissues. A strong negative correlation was found between ureide accumulation and TNC levels in the leaves. This relationship, together with the large effect of elevated [CO2] on the decrease of ureide accumulation in the leaves, indicated the importance of ureide breakdown in the response of N2 fixation to drought and of feedback inhibition by ureides on nodule activity. It is concluded that an important effect of CO2 enrichment on soybean under drought conditions is an enhancement of photoassimilation, an increased partitioning of carbon to nodules and a decrease of leaf ureide levels, which is associated with sustained nodule growth and N2 rates under soil water deficits. We suggest that future [CO2] increases are likely to benefit soybean production by increasing the drought tolerance of N2 fixation.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that mesophyll conductance (gm) would be reduced by leaf starch accumulation in plants grown under elevated CO2 concentration [CO2], we investigated gm in seedlings of Japanese white birch grown under ambient and elevated [CO2] with an adequate and limited nitrogen supply using simultaneous gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Both elevated [CO2] and limited nitrogen supply decreased area‐based leaf N accompanied with a decrease in the maximum rate of Rubisco carboxylation (Vc,max) on a CO2 concentration at chloroplast stroma (Cc) basis. Conversely, only seedlings grown at elevated [CO2] under limited nitrogen supply had significantly higher leaf starch content with significantly lower gm among the treatment combinations. Based on a leaf anatomical analysis using microscopic photographs, however, there were no significant difference in the area of chloroplast surfaces facing intercellular space per unit leaf area among treatment combinations. Thicker cell walls were suggested in plants grown under limited N by increases in leaf mass per area subtracting non‐structural carbohydrates. These results suggest that starch accumulation and/or thicker cell walls in the leaves grown at elevated [CO2] under limited N supply might hinder CO2 diffusion in chloroplasts and cell walls, which would be an additional cause of photosynthetic downregulation as well as a reduction in Rubisco activity related to the reduced leaf N under elevated [CO2].  相似文献

Needles from phosphorus deficient seedlings of Pinus radiata D. Don grown for 8 weeks at either 330 or 660 microliters CO2 per liter displayed chlorophyll a fluorescence induction kinetics characteristic of structural changes within the thylakoid chloroplast membrane, i.e. constant yield fluorescence (FO) was increased and induced fluorescence ([FP-FI]/FO) was reduced. The effect was greatest in the undroughted plants grown at 660 μl CO2 L−1. By week 22 at 330 μl CO2 L−1 acclimation to P deficiency had occurred as shown by the similarity in the fluorescence characteristics and maximum rates of photosynthesis of the needles from the two P treatments. However, acclimation did not occur in the plants grown at 660 μl CO2 L−1. The light saturated rate of photosynthesis of needles with adequate P was higher at 660 μl CO2 L−1 than at 330 μl CO2 L−1, whereas photosynthesis of P deficient plants showed no increase when grown at the higher CO2 concentration. The average growth increase due to CO2 enrichment was 14% in P deficient plants and 32% when P was adequate. In drought stressed plants grown at 330 μl CO2 L−1, there was a reduction in the maximal rate of quenching of fluorescence (RQ) after the major peak. Constant yield fluorescence was unaffected but induced fluorescence was lower. These results indicate that electron flow subsequent to photosystem II was affected by drought stress. At 660 μl CO2 L−1 this response was eliminated showing that CO2 enrichment improved the ability of the seedlings to acclimate to drought stress. The average growth increase with CO2 enrichment was 37% in drought stressed plants and 19% in unstressed plants.  相似文献

Transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. W38) plants with an antisense gene directed against the mRNA of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase (Rubisco) activase were used to examine the relationship between CO2-assimilation rate, Rubisco carbamylation and activase content. Plants used were those members of the r1 progeny of a primary transformant with two independent T-DNA inserts that could be grown without CO2 supplementation. These plants had from < 1% to 20% of the activase content of control plants. Severe suppression of activase to amounts below 5% of those present in the controls was required before reductions in CO2-assimilation rate and Rubisco carbamylation were observed, indicating that one activase tetramer is able to service as many as 200 Rubisco hexadecamers and maintain wild-type carbamylation levels in vivo. The reduction in CO2-assimilation rate was correlated with the reduction in Rubisco carbamylation. The anti-activase plants had similar ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate pool sizes but reduced 3-phosphoglycerate pool sizes compared to those of control plants. Stomatal conductance was not affected by reduced activase content or CO2-assimilation rate. A mathematical model of activase action is used to explain the observed hyperbolic dependence of Rubisco carbamylation on activase content.Abbreviations CA1P 2-carboxyarabinitol-1-phosphate - Pipa intercellular, ambient partial pressure of CO2 - PGA 3-phospho-glycerate - Rubisco ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate - SSU small subunit of Rubisco  相似文献

The effects of micropropagation conditions on avocado (Persea americana Mill.) have been measured in leaves and plants cultured in vitro. The consequences of the type and concentration of sugar in the medium and of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere on the rates of photosynthesis and amounts of ribulose 1,5-biphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39; Rubisco) and total soluble protein (TSP) were measured. At the highest sucrose supply (87.6 mM), Rubisco content was substantially decreased in leaves, and even more when elevated CO2 (1 000 μmol·mol−1) was supplied. Maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) was significantly decreased when plants developed in high sucrose and elevated CO2. However, Rubisco concentration was significantly greater when glucose was supplied at the same molar concentration or when the concentration of sucrose was small (14.6 mM), and no differences were observed due to the CO2 concentration in the air in these treatments. The ratio of Rubisco to total soluble protein (Rubisco/TSP) was dramatically decreased in plants grown in the highest concentration of sucrose and with elevated CO2. Leaf area and ratio of leaf fresh weight/(stem + root) fresh weight, were greater in plants grown with CO2 enriched air. However, upon transplanting, survival was poorer in plants grown on low sucrose/high CO2 compared to those grown on high sucrose/high CO2.  相似文献

A complementary DNA for the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) was cloned from tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and fused in the antisense orientation to the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter. This antisense gene was introduced into the tobacco genome, and the resulting transgenic plants were analyzed to assess the effect of the antisense RNA on Rubisco activity and photosynthesis. The mean content of extractable Rubisco activity from the leaves of 10 antisense plants was 18% of the mean level of activity of control plants. The soluble protein content of the leaves of anti-small subunit plants was reduced by the amount equivalent to the reduction in Rubisco. There was little change in phosphoribulokinase activity, electron transport, and chlorophyll content, indicating that the loss of Rubisco did not affect these other components of photosynthesis. However, there was a significant reduction in carbonic anhydrase activity. The rate of CO2 assimilation measured at 1000 micromoles quanta per square meter per second, 350 microbars CO2, and 25°C was reduced by 63% (mean value) in the antisense plants and was limited by Rubisco activity over a wide range of intercellular CO2 partial pressures (pi). In control leaves, Rubisco activity only limited the rate of CO2 assimilation below a pi of 400 microbars. Despite the decrease in photosynthesis, there was no reduction in stomatal conductance in the antisense plants, and the stomata still responded to changes in pi. The unchanged conductance and lower CO2 assimilation resulted in a higher pi, which was reflected in greater carbon isotope discrimination in the leaves of the antisense plants. These results suggest that stomatal function is independent of total leaf Rubisco activity.  相似文献

The northern hemisphere temperate and boreal forests currently provide an important carbon sink; however, current tropospheric ozone concentrations ([O3]) and [O3] projected for later this century are damaging to trees and have the potential to reduce the carbon sink strength of these forests. This meta‐analysis estimated the magnitude of the impacts of current [O3] and future [O3] on the biomass, growth, physiology and biochemistry of trees representative of northern hemisphere forests. Current ambient [O3] (40 ppb on average) significantly reduced the total biomass of trees by 7% compared with trees grown in charcoal‐filtered (CF) controls, which approximate preindustrial [O3]. Above‐ and belowground productivity were equally affected by ambient [O3] in these studies. Elevated [O3] of 64 ppb reduced total biomass by 11% compared with trees grown at ambient [O3] while elevated [O3] of 97 ppb reduced total biomass of trees by 17% compared with CF controls. The root‐to‐shoot ratio was significantly reduced by elevated [O3] indicating greater sensitivity of root biomass to [O3]. At elevated [O3], trees had significant reductions in leaf area, Rubisco content and chlorophyll content which may underlie significant reductions in photosynthetic capacity. Trees also had lower transpiration rates, and were shorter in height and had reduced diameter when grown at elevated [O3]. Further, at elevated [O3], gymnosperms were significantly less sensitive than angiosperms. There were too few observations of the interaction of [O3] with elevated [CO2] and drought to conclusively project how these climate change factors will alter tree responses to [O3]. Taken together, these results demonstrate that the carbon‐sink strength of northern hemisphere forests is likely reduced by current [O3] and will be further reduced in future if [O3] rises. This implies that a key carbon sink currently offsetting a significant portion of global fossil fuel CO2 emissions could be diminished or lost in the future.  相似文献

Among C4 species, sorghum is known to be more drought tolerant than maize. The objective was to evaluate differences in leaf gas exchanges, carbohydrates, and two enzyme activities of these nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-malic enzyme (NADP-ME) C4 subtype monocots in response to water deficit and CO2 concentration ([CO2]). Maize and sorghum were grown in pots in sunlit environmental-controlled chambers. Treatments included well watered (WW) and water stressed (WS) (water withheld at 26 days) and daytime [CO2] of 360 (ambient) and 720 (elevated) μmol mol−1. Midday gas exchange rates, concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates, and activities of sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS) and adenosine 5′-diphosphoglucose pyrophosphorylase (ADGP) were determined for fully expanded leaf sections. There was no difference in leaf CO2 exchange rates (CER) between ambient and elevated [CO2] control plants for both maize and sorghum. After withholding water, leaf CER declined to zero after 8 days in maize and 10 days for sorghum. Sorghum had lower stomatal conductance and transpiration rates than maize, which resulted in a longer period of CER under drought. Nonstructural carbohydrates of both control maize and sorghum were hardly affected by elevated [CO2]. Under drought, however, increases in soluble sugars and decreases in starch were generally observed for maize and sorghum at both [CO2] levels. For stressed maize and sorghum, decreases in starch occurred earlier and were greater at ambient [CO2] than at elevated [CO2]. For maize, drought did not meaningfully affect SPS activity. However, a decline in SPS activity was observed for drought-stressed sorghum under both [CO2] treatments. There was an increase in ADGP activity in maize under drought for both [CO2] treatments. Such a response in ADGP to drought, however, did not occur for sorghum. The generally more rapid response of maize than sorghum to drought might be related to the more rapid growth of leaf area of maize.  相似文献

In this study, we tested for the temporal occurrence of photosynthetic acclimation to elevated [CO2] in the flag leaf of two important cereal crops, rice and wheat. In order to characterize the temporal onset of acclimation and the basis for any observed decline in photosynthetic rate, we characterized net photosynthesis, gs, gm, Ci/Ca, Ci/Cc, Vcmax, Jmax, cell wall thickness, content of Rubisco, cytochrome (Cyt) f, N, chlorophyll and carbohydrate, mRNA expression for rbcL and petA, activity for Rubisco, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SS) at full flag expansion, mid‐anthesis and the late grain‐filling stage. No acclimation was observed for either crop at full flag leaf expansion. However, at the mid‐anthesis stage, photosynthetic acclimation in rice was associated with RuBP carboxylation and regeneration limitations, while wheat only had the carboxylation limitation. By grain maturation, the decline of Rubisco content and activity had contributed to RuBP carboxylation limitation of photosynthesis in both crops at elevated [CO2]; however, the sharp decrease of Rubisco enzyme activity played a more important role in wheat. Although an increase in non‐structural carbohydrates did occur during these later stages, it was not consistently associated with changes in SPS and SS or photosynthetic acclimation. Rather, over time elevated [CO2] appeared to enhance the rate of N degradation and senescence so that by late‐grain fill, photosynthetic acclimation to elevated [CO2] in the flag leaf of either species was complete. These data suggest that the basis for photosynthetic acclimation with elevated [CO2] may be more closely associated with enhanced rates of senescence, and, as a consequence, may be temporally dynamic, with significant species variation.  相似文献

After exposure to a doubled CO2 concentration of 750 µL L?1 for 2 months, average relative growth rate (RGR) of Mokara Yellow increased 25%. The two carboxylating enzymes, ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase), responded differently to CO2 enrichment. There was a significant daytime down‐regulation in Rubisco activity in the leaves of CO2‐enriched plants. However, PEPCase activity in CO2‐enriched plants was much higher in the dark period, although it was slightly lower during the daytime than that at ambient CO2. Leaf sucrose–phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SS) activities in CO2‐enriched plants increased markedly, along with a night‐time increase in total titratable acidity and malate accumulation. There was a remarkable increase in the levels of indole‐3‐acetic acid (IAA), gibberellins A1 and A3 (GA1+3), isopentenyladenosine (iPA) and zeatin riboside (ZR) in the expanding leaves of plants grown at elevated CO2. It is suggested that (1) the down‐regulation of Rubisco and up‐regulation of SPS and SS are two important acclimation processes that are beneficial because it enhanced both photosynthetic capacity at high CO2 and reduced resource investment in excessive Rubisco capacity; (2) the increased levels of plant hormones in CO2‐enriched M. Yellow might play an important role in controlling its growth and development.  相似文献
