Abstract The morphology of the lateral-line system of the nine-spined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) and the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) has been studied. In the nine-spined stickleback, a preopercular, infraorbital, supraorbital, postotic and peduncular canal can be identified on both sides of the body. Replacement lines are found as a continuation of the preopercular and infraorbital canal. In addition, lines of free neuromasts are found on the mandible and trunk. An accessory line is present above and below the peduncular canal. The presence of both canals and accessory lines on the peduncle suggests that the peduncle in this species has important sensory functions. No canals are found in the three-spined stickleback. Instead, replacement lines corresponding to the canals can be identified on the head. Accordingly, the lateral-line system of the three-spined and the nine-spined stickleback has a different structure. The lateral-line system of both species shows signs of specialization but the three-spined stickleback has a more specialized lateral-line system than the nine-spined stickleback.  相似文献

Summary The olfactory epithelium of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and the nine-spined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) has been studied with a conventional histochemical and a novel immunological staining technique. In both species, the sensory epithelium is arranged in folds separated by non-sensory epithelial tissue. In the nine-spined stickleback, intrinsic folds consisting of non-sensory cells are found in the apical part of the sensory epithelium where they divide the surface of the sensory epithelium into small islets. These non-sensory cells are non-ciliated, flattened and piled on top of each other; they contain numerous electron-translucent vesicles. The intrinsic folds are absent from the sensory epithelium of the three-spined stickleback. In both species, axons of receptor cells form a layer of fibers in the sensory epithelium immediately above the basal cells. In the three-spined stickleback, thick branches of the olfactory nerve are frequently found in this layer. These branches are only occasionally observed in the sensory epithelium of the nine-spined stickleback. Thus, the three-spined stickleback and the nine-spined stickleback show considerable differences in the organization of the sensory regions of the olfactory epithelium.  相似文献

A complex of adaptive changes occurring in the Pacific salmon fry in the process of migration to the sea is described, including behavior, ion content in carcasses, and morphological changes in Stannius bodies, gill epithelium, and nephron tubular epithelium. Participating in experiments with transfer from fresh water into a two-layer aquarium (the lower layer - sea water, the upper layer - fresh water) were smolts of chum salmon and underyearlings of masu salmon as well as the trachurus and leiurus forms of the three-spined stickleback Casterosteus aculeatus. All fish, regardless of their salt preference, at once after placement into the two-layer aquarium, occupied the sea water zone, at the very bottom of the aquarium. After 1 h, there started brief excursions of masu salmon and chum salmon to the upper, fresh water layer; however, both forms of the three-spined stickleback did not participate in these excursions. After 12 h, the chum salmon settled down in the lower, sea water layer, while the masu salmon - in the upper, fresh water layer. Both forms of the three-spined stickleback never left the sea water layer and felt quite comfortably on the aquarium bottom. It seems that the high tolerance of the both stickleback forms to wide salinity limits allows them to choose the convenient position regardless of the water salt composition. By analyzing the material obtained for three years (2001-2003) on structure and functions of the gill epithelium chloride cells (CC), we have come to the conclusion that the fresh water fry of two salmon species, chum and masu salmons, caught at the same time and practically in the same water reservoirs can be divided into three groups. The underyearlings of the masu salmon as a rule are characterized by the thickened epithelium of secondary gill lamellae, but by a very small number of CC. In smolts of chum salmon, on the contrary, the epithelium is sufficiently thin, but enriched in the CC that demonstrate an active structure in the very beginning of migration to sea. However, with approaching the sea (and with an increase of terms of migration) the CC activity drops, but their amount does not change. And only after migration to the sea the CC activity rises again, although their amount seems to remain unchanged. The described peculiarities of behavior and of the ion composition regulation in the migrating salmon fry confirm the hypothesis that the salmons evolutionized in fresh water, that the Oncorhynchus genus appeared in large spaces of saltish waters, such as the Japan Sea at the period of the early Pleistocene, and that learning of fry of the Oncorhynchus genus (for instance, of O. gorbuscha and O. keta) is the most specialized in the salmons migrating to the sea, whereas the fresh water species of chars (Salvelinus) and of trouts (Salmo) are more primitive.  相似文献

The data on feeding of coastal cod Gadus morhua marisalbi in the area of the Chupa Bay (Kandalaksha Gulf of the White Sea) are presented. In the food spectrum of cod, over 25 cm long fish and their eggs dominated (77.5% by frequency of occurrence and 91.7% by weight). Other groups of food organisms occupied a secondary place. Among fish, three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus was the most prominent food item in the diet of cod (48.3% by weight). The published data on long-term changes of the diet of cod are considered, which are mostly related to considerable fluctuations of the abundance of three-spined stickleback in the White Sea. It is shown that, at present, three-spined stickleback again plays an important role in the diet of the White Sea cod  相似文献

Variation at nine microsatellite loci, four of which are linked to phenotypic traits (spine length and lateral plate morphology) in Canadian three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus , are used to test for selection on marine and freshwater three-spined stickleback morphs in Iceland. There are indications of strong selection on loci linked to dorsal spine length, providing another potential example of parallel divergence at the genomic level in three-spined stickleback.  相似文献

From the end of May to mid-August 2005 and 2006, the dynamics of migrations and spawning, as well as specific features of development, growth, and feeding migration of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in the salmon river Utkholok of the mountain-tundra type were studied. Morphological characteristics, age, fecundity, dates of reproduction and spawning biotopes, structure of spawning groups, and specific features of feeding were investigated. On the basis of the obtained data, it was concluded that the riverine and migratory forms of three-spined sticklebacks from the Utkholok River belong to a single population. Biological specific features of spawners with high (2005) and low (2006) numbers of the migratory form were compared. For comparison, we also used our own data on the morphology and biological analysis of the migratory three-spined stickleback from the Kol River salmon of the mountain type.  相似文献

The results of a parasitological study of the two species of sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius and Gasterosteus aculeatus) inhabiting the Kola region are presented. The 42 and 14 species of parasite were found in the nine-spined and three-spined stickleback, respectively. The paucity of the parasite fauna in the three-spined stickleback is observed. Distribution of parasites in Kola waterbodies and ecological peculiarities in system "parasite-host" are presented.  相似文献

The role and intensity of positive selection maintaining the polymorphism of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I genes in the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus was investigated. The highly polymorphic set of MHC class I genes found was organized in a single linkage group. Between 5 and 14 sequence variants per individual were identified by single-stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. Segregation analysis studied in 10 three-spined stickleback families followed the expected pattern of Mendelian inheritance. The gamete fusion in three-spined stickleback thus seems to be random with respect to the MHC class I genes. The DNA sequence analyses showed that the expressed MHC class I loci are under strong selection pressure, possibly mediated by parasites. Codons that were revealed to be under positive selection are potentially important in antigen binding. MHC class I sequences did not form significant supported clusters within a phylogenetic tree. Analogous to MHC class II genes, it was not possible to assign the class I sequences to a specific locus, suggesting that the class I genes may have been generated by recent gene duplication.  相似文献

Similarity between the taste preferences of classical taste substances and free L-amino acids in adult three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus (forma leiurus) and nine-spined stickleback Pungitius pungitius (forma laevis) was found. The strongest and the most significant responses in both species were evoked by citric acid and cysteine, asparatic, and glutamic acids. Sodium chloride, calcium chloride, sucrose, and the remaining 18 amino acids do not elicit a statistically significant effect on the consumption of agar-agar pellets by the fish or have weak taste attractiveness. Similarity of taste preferences in the three-spined and nine-spined sticklebacks are supported by correlation analysis. Absolute values of the consumption of pellets of the same types are also similar in the two species. There were, however, differences in the behavioral taste response, repeated snaps, and the duration of processing of the pellets. The taste response of the nine-spined stickleback is more similar to taste responses in fish of the limnophilic complex than to the response in the three-spined stickleback. It is hypothesized that taste spectra may be very similar in fish with similar ecology and feeding patterns not only in sticklebacks, but also in other related species.  相似文献

Endocrine disrupting compounds are chemicals that may interfere with the endocrine system causing severe effects in organisms. The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) offers a potential for the assessment of endocrine disruption caused by a) estrogenic xenobiotics through the estrogen-dependent protein vitellogenin and b) androgenic xenobiotics through the androgen-dependent protein spiggin. The stickleback is presently the only known fish species with a quantifiable androgen and anti-androgen biomarker endpoint. In the current study, hepatocyte and kidney primary cell cultures and liver and kidney tissue slice cultures were prepared and used for detecting estrogenic or androgenic activity in vitro through the action of hormones or municipal sewage water. The results indicate that stickleback male hepatocyte cultures are suitable in detecting estrogenic activity and stickleback female kidney tissue slice cultures in detecting androgenic activity. The tested sewage water showed high estrogenic activity but no significant androgenic activity. Primary cell and tissue slice cultures isolated from the three-spined stickleback will allow simultaneously screening in vitro for potential estrogenic and androgenic activity of complex samples.  相似文献

Optimal life-history models generally predict that the reproductive effort of iteroparous organisms may increase with age, as their expectation of future reproduction decreases. The population of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in the Camargue (Rhone River Delta, France) is annual, all adults dying after their first breeding season. As the three-spined stickleback is a multiple spawner, we tested the hypothesis that reproductive effort may increase during the breeding season on field data. From 1987 to 1998, 653 female sticklebacks were collected in the field during the breeding seasons. The body size, body weight and weights of the liver, gonads and carcass were measured for these individuals. Only gravid females with mature eggs (176 fish) were included in the analysis. Considering the female three-spined stickleback as a capital breeder, the energetic resources available for allocation between soma and gonads were estimated by its body weight. Somatic condition decreased during the breeding season and reproductive effort (gonad weight relative to body weight) increased. These patterns did not vary significantly between years. These observed variations in reproductive effort during the breeding season can be interpreted as empirical evidence of a trade-off between reproductive effort and expectation of future reproduction.  相似文献

Sex-biased dispersal is capable of generating population structure in nonisolated populations and may affect adaptation processes when selective conditions differ among populations. Intrasexual competition for local resources and/or mating opportunities predicts a male-biased dispersal in polygynous species and a female bias in monogamous species. The patterns of sex-biased dispersal in birds and mammals are well explained by their respective mating systems, but the picture emerging from fish studies is still mixed. Using neutral genetic markers, we investigated whether there is any evidence for sex-biased dispersal among Baltic Sea populations of the three-spined stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ). The null hypothesis of non sex-biased dispersal was rejected in favour of male-biased dispersal in this species. As the three-spined stickleback has a polygynous mating system, the observed male bias in dispersal is consistent with the hypothesis that local mate competition might drive the observed pattern. Although more research both on the proximate and ultimate causes behind the observed pattern is needed, our results serve as a first step towards understanding patterns of sex-biased dispersal in this species.  相似文献

Summary Diel and seasonal foraging activity patterns of goosanders (Mergus merganser L.) and red-breasted mergansers (M. serrator L.) were studied during the breeding season on the Rickleå River in northern Sweden (64°05N). In addition, the locomotor activity patterns of their most important prey species, the river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis (L.)) and the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.), were recorded.During spring, as mergansers arrived in the breeding area, both species exhibited a bimodal, diurnal pattern of activity with morning and evening peaks. By June (the spawning period for the river lamprey and the migratory period for the three-spined stickleback), goosander activity had shifted to late in the evening. This new activity peak correlated well with the main activity period in the river lamprey. Red-breasted mergansers remained predominantly diurnal throughout the observation period. Their diurnal activity correlated with the activity of their major prey, the three-spined stickleback. Both merganser species utilize a specialized foraging technique, i.e. probing the river-bottom with the bill, to catch hiding fish more or less at random. This behaviour probably helps them to forage during the relatively bright summer nights and thus prey upon the abundant nocturnal river lamprey. The goosander preys upon the river lamprey to a greater extent than does the red-breasted merganser, thus leading to a temporal segregation in food resource utilization between the two duck species.  相似文献

Species that form breeding aggregations, such as the three-spined stickleback, have ample opportunity to observe and interact with others in their respective populations. This exposes courting pairs to distraction or disruption from onlooking individuals. Thus, courting inconspicuously could be beneficial to males. We tested whether males would court inconspicuously by housing them in individual tanks with visual access to a neighbouring male. A dummy of a gravid female three-spined stickleback was presented to a male in the front quadrant of the tank while screens concealed either the front quarter or front half of the tank from the neighbour. When a portion of the tank was concealed from a neighbouring rival, males courted more in the concealed areas than those that were exposed to a rival. Hence, in the presence of rivals, males can adjust their courtship behaviour in ways that could increase their mating success. Whether this reflects an active ‘strategy’ or a passive result of the male being less distracted by its neighbour is presently unknown.  相似文献
