1. The effects of Daphnia infochemicals on the morphology and biochemical composition of Scenedesmus were studied and subsequently their influence on Daphnia life history. Three species of Scenedesmus ( S. acutus, S. obliquus and S. subspicatus ) were tested for Daphnia -induced colony formation. Life history experiments were performed with Daphnia cucullata and D. magna feeding on unicellular or colonial S. acutus.
2. Colony formation was promoted when S. acutus and S. obliquus were exposed to filtered water from a D. magna culture. S. subspicatus did not form colonies when exposed to culture water, but showed some colony formation when exposed to live D. magna.
3. No clear differences were found in total lipid, protein or carbohydrate content between the unicellular and colonial ecomorphs of the three Scenedesmus species. However, fatty acid (FA) concentration and composition were changed. Total FA as a percentage of frozen dry weight (DW) were increased in colonies. The ratio of monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and the ratio of ω3 : ω6 fatty acids decreased in colonies.
4. A short-term grazing experiment with three size classes of Scenedesmus revealed lower clearance rates for small Daphnia when feeding on large colonial Scenedesmus.
5. Life history parameters of both Daphnia species were influenced by food type. The intrinsic rate of population increase ( r) was significantly lower for daphnids feeding on colonies.
6. The negative influence of colonial Scenedesmus on population growth of Daphnia seems to be determined by algal morphology rather than biochemical composition.  相似文献

1. Changes in dry weight, DNA, RNA, protein and reserve and structural carbohydrate were measured during the aerobic growth of yeast on 0.9% glucose in an aerobic synthetic medium. 2. After glucose had been consumed and during the growth of yeast on ethanol and acetate, the rate of formation of DNA remained about the same but the rate of increase of dry weight was greatly diminished. 3. During the second stage of growth the ratios dry weight/DNA, protein/DNA, RNA/DNA and carbohydrate/DNA decreased to about 30% of the corresponding values during the first stage of growth. 4. A higher fraction of the dry weight of the yeast cells could be accounted for by the reserve carbohydrate content of the cells during the second stage of growth. 5. By the end of the first stage of growth an increase in the reserve carbohydrate content of the cells was observed. Part of this reserve carbohydrate was consumed by the cells in the beginning of the second stage of growth. The possibility of adaptation of cells at the expense of their reserves is discussed.  相似文献

1. The ability of rain-forest plants to utilize sunflecks for growth was investigated using the following species: Alocasia macrorrhiza, Diploglottis diphyllostegia, Micromelum minutum and Omalanthus novo-guinensis.
2. Growth analysis and gas-exchange measurements were used to assess performance of the four species when exposed to either constant or fluctuating light.
3. Final biomass (g dry wt) in D. diphyllostegia and M. minutum grown under the lightfleck regime (total daily PFD = 7·02 mol m–2 day–1) was significantly greater than in the same species grown under constant low PFD (total daily PFD = 4·86 mol m–2 day–1). In contrast, final biomass in lightfleck O. novo-guinensis and A. macrorrhiza was significantly reduced in comparison with the same species grown under constant low PFD.
4. When grown under either constant or fluctuating light but with the same total daily PFD, A. macrorrhiza and O. novo-guinensis had significantly lower final biomass in fluctuating light as compared to constant light. Final biomass in D. diphyllostegia was not significantly different in either regime, while M. minutum had significantly higher final biomass in the fluctuating light regime.
5. Responses of the four species to fluctuating or constant light appeared to be the result of physiological rather than morphological acclimation as net assimilation rate was more closely correlated with relative growth rate than was leaf area ratio.  相似文献

Summary A highly selected population of cells (clumps from 63 to 125 μm in diameter), obtained by screening 14-day-old stock suspension cultures of wild carrot (Daucus carota L.), was used to initiate cultures in this study. Time-course changes in DNA, RNA and protein were followed when these cultures were grown in the presence or absence of 2.25 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The data show that growth of these cultures, particularly in the early part of the growth curve, is different from that in most other studies reported on suspension cultures initiated without screening. The gross compositional analysis shows that this difference stems from the very high RNA:DNA and protein:DNA ratios of the cellular material used as the inoculum in this study. The presence of 2,4-D in the medium promoted total RNA and protein levels. Correlations were sought between the appearance of embryos in the absence of exogenous 2,4-D and gross compositional differences developing in cultures grown in the presence and absence of 2,4-D. The handling of cultures during inoculation appeared to have led to a substantial loss of DNA. This had, however, little effect on dry weight or protein content of the tissue. 1. Plants of Bellis perennis, Dactylis glomerata and Poa annua were grown from seed in controlled-environment cabinets at either 16 or 20 °C; at the higher temperature all three species had increased total dry mass and leaf area when assessed on the basis of chronological time. On the basis of thermal time (summation of degree-days above 0 °C; days °C) temperature decreased the dry mass in P. annua.
2. Partitioning was assessed as a change in the allometric coefficients relating shoot and root dry mass, leaf and plant mass, leaf area and plant mass, and leaf area and leaf mass. Of the 12 relationships examined only three were affected by temperature: there was increased partitioning towards the shoot relative to the root in D. glomerata and increased partitioning towards leaf area rather than leaf mass in D. glomerata and B.perennis .
3. Root respiration was unaffected by temperature of growth in D. glomerata and P.annua but was lower in B. perennis grown at elevated temperature.
4. Root respiration acclimated to temperature in P. annua and B. perennis (i.e. when measured at the same temperature, respiration was higher in plants grown at 16 °C).
5. Root soluble carbohydrate concentration was unaffected by temperature of growth in any of the species. Feeding sucrose to the roots for a short period had no effect on the rate of respiration of B. perennis or D. glomerata but increased root respiration of P. annua .  相似文献

1. A series of experiments examined growth of Daphnia magna on three algal diets ( Rhodomonas minuta , Scenedesmus acutus and Synechococcus sp.) at varying physiological states [nitrogen and phosphorus (P) limitations] to test whether variation in algal fatty acid and/or elemental composition can predict Daphnia growth.
2. These algae differed widely in their essential fatty acid (EFA) composition while phosphorus (P) or nitrogen limitation had only a small influence on their ω3-polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content.
3. Individually, algal ω3-PUFA content explained 69% of the variation in the normalised growth of D. magna, while algal phosphorus content explained 11% of the variation. Quantitative models for D. magna growth used both algal ω3-PUFA content and algal C : P ratio as food quality indices. Together, algal ω3-PUFA content and C : P ratio explained 70% of the variation in the normalised growth rate of D. magna .
4. Our results indicate that EFA influenced algal food quality much more strongly than P. The EFA and mineral P impacts appear to be independent.  相似文献

We have used phosphate, nitrogen, or carbon limited batch and continuous flow cultures to study how growth and biochemical composition of the dinoflagellate Crypthecodinium cohnii CCMP 316 is affected by nutrient limitation. Specific contents of phosphorous, proteins, and starch were differently affected by nutrient limitation. The specific phosphorous content in C. cohnii varied 10-20 times depending on phosphate availability in the medium. When phosphate was available it was taken up in excess and stored to be re-utilized during phosphate limitation. The specific protein content varied twofold. At most conditions, proteins made up 12-15% of the biomass dry weight but when cells were nitrogen limited, the specific protein content was only half this value. Floridean starch was the major cell constituent of C. cohnii accounting for 40-50% of the biomass dry weight. Only during carbon limitation did the specific starch content decrease. In contrast was the specific lipid content almost unaffected by nutrient availability and lipids accounted for 12-15% of the biomass dry weight irrespectively of which nutrient that was limiting. Lipid production does therefore not depend on nutrient limitation in C. cohnii and lipids are produced even by carbon limited cells. Cultures grown under phosphate limitation resulted in formation of cells with maximal specific contents of all the three major cell constituents; starch, lipid, and protein.  相似文献

The survival time of zooplankton under conditions of total starvation is expressed as a function of weight-specific respiration rate and the fraction of initial (pre-starvation) body weight which may be lost prior to death. Data from the literature on these two components of survival time are used to formulate a general expression of survivorship of zooplankton at 20°C as a function of body weight: t=2·95 w0·25, where t is in days and w is μg dry weight. Survival time data from the literature on 25 marine and freshwater species are compared to this prediction as are new data on Daphnia pulex Leydig, D. magna Straus and Simocephalus serrulatus (Koch). The effects of age-specific (non-starvation) mortality are considered; in particular, older individuals of each of these species survive for shorter periods of time than predicted and an interaction between age-specific and starvation-induced mortality is proposed. The effects of total and partial starvation on the size structure of zooplankton communities are discussed.  相似文献

The growth rate hypothesis states that in many organisms or tissues, the specific growth rate μ correlates with RNA concentrations. Since RNA often accounts for much of the phosphorus content of cells, μ may also correlate positively with P concentrations and negatively with C:P and N:P ratios. We tested this hypothesis with broth cultures of five aquatic hyphomycete species. Samples were harvested on eight occasions after 3–56 d of incubation. Accumulation of biomass was fitted to a rectangular hyperbola, whose parameters were used to estimate μ. There were no consistent trends related to culture age or μ for C, N, P or ergosterol concentrations. RNA and DNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios were significantly and negatively correlated with culture age. Only RNA concentrations were positively and linearly correlated with μ. While RNA or DNA concentrations are unsuitable as indicators for total biomass, levels of fungal RNA combined with markers for fungal biomass may allow estimates of the extent to which the mycelia are metabolically active.  相似文献

1. Pampulha Lake has undergone rapid eutrophication. Annual maxima of total phosphorus and conductivity increased steadily from 1993 to 1996. Nitrogen quickly decreased after macrophyte removal in 1994, but increased again in the following years
2. The zooplankton was dominated by Daphnia gessneri , D. laevis , Diaphanosoma birgei and Thermocyclops decipiens . The biomass of major zooplankton organisms, including Daphnia and rotifers, increased during the period covered in this study.
3. Autocorrelation coefficients have confirmed the existence of recurrent seasonal patterns for both chemical and biological variables.
4. Daphnia , calanoid copepods and rotifers showed clear and recurrent seasonal patterns. Cyclopoid copepods and Diaphanosoma had temporal patterns more affected by long‐term trophic changes. Other organisms such as Moina, Ceriodaphnia and Bosmina exhibited high temporal variability with no recurrent patterns.
5. There was a strong and positive correlation between total phosphorus and Daphnia biomass. Seasonal patterns of this cladoceran were also inversely associated with sestonic C:P ratios. Thus, Daphnia may be limited primarily by phosphorus and not by total food availability as expressed by particulate carbon.
6. This study suggests that increasing eutrophication has changed the structure as well as seasonal patterns of the zooplankton community in Pampulha Reservoir.  相似文献

在考查罗非鱼或鲢、鳙下行影响的微型生态系统实验后期,对其唯一的浮游动物──大型的特定正磷酸盐(PO4-P)排泄率按不同大小级别和培育时间进行了测定,同时估算了该浮游动物种群的PO4-P排泄率。结果表明,大型的特定PO4-P排泄率依其体重的增长呈指数式下降,并且随着培育时间的增加而大大降低。有鱼系统中大型种群的PO4-P排泄率及其与浮游植物PO4-P摄取率的比值都显著地小于无鱼系统,而放养罗非鱼或鳙的系统之二项估算值又明显地比鲢单养系统低。看来,大型种群的磷排泄在鲢单养系统的PO4-P再生中起有一定的作用,而在放养罗非鱼或鳙的系统中所起的作用很小。    相似文献

Growth of fathead minnow yolk sac larvae was characterized from changes in dry weight and total content and concentrations of RNA, DNA and protein in fish exposed to a sublethal level of HCN (58 micrograms/l) and in age matched controls. Cyanide toxicosis occurred within 24 hr of exposure as evidenced by significant reductions in protein and RNA content and RNA/DNA ratio of larvae. After 96 hr exposure to HCN, larvae exhibited the same growth rate and protein synthetic rate (RNA/DNA) as control fish. HCN toxicosis and recovery is rapid and at least partial tolerance to HCN develops within 96 hr of exposure in larval fathead minnows.  相似文献

Feeding rate, growth and nutritional condition as well as nodularin concentration of juvenile three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus were assessed in an experimental study where field-collected fish were given a diet of zooplankton fed with toxic Nodularia spumigena for 15 days. Food consumption was higher in N. spumigena bloom conditions compared with the cyanobacterium-free control, but despite this the growth rate of exposed fish did not improve. Control fish and fish fed N. spumigena -exposed zooplankton had higher RNA:DNA ratios and protein content than fish grown in cyanobacterial bloom conditions indicating good nutritional condition and recent growth of fish, whereas in bloom conditions metabolic transformation of nodularin to less toxic compounds may cause an energetic cost to the fish affecting the growth rate of the whole organism. Juvenile three-spined sticklebacks collected from the field contained higher concentrations of nodularin at the beginning of the experiment (mean 503·1 μg kg−1). After 15 days, the lowest nodularin concentrations in fish were measured in the control treatment, suggesting that fish fed with non-toxic food are able to detoxify nodularin from their tissues more effectively than fish in continuing exposure.  相似文献

Weight, RNA, DNA and protein content of the oviduct, vaginal cul-de-sac, lateral vagina and urogenital sinus and oestradiol and progesterone cytosol receptor concentrations in vaginal cul-de-sac, lateral vagina and urogenital sinus were examined after administration of oestradiol to ovariectomized animals and on days 0, 5, 9 and 13 of the non-pregnant cycle and on day 13 of the pregnant cycle. In ovariectomized animals, oestradiol induced an increase in weight, RNA:DNA and protein:DNA ratios and a decrease in DNA:tissue weight ratio for each organ and in addition an increase in total DNA in vaginal cul-de-sac and urogenital sinus. There was no effect of oestradiol on oestradiol cytosol receptor concentration but there was a significant increase in progesterone cytosol receptor concentration in all organs that were examined. During the oestrous cycle, changes in the wet weight of each organ showed a common pattern with maximum weight at day 0 followed by variable rates of decline until day 13. In oviduct and vaginal cul-de-sac, the decrease in weight was paralleled by a decrease in RNA:DNA and protein:DNA ratios whereas the DNA: tissue weight ratio showed the opposite pattern and total DNA remained unchanged. The changes in the lateral vagina and urogenital sinus were similar except that a significant decline in total DNA was also seen after day 0 and the DNA:tissue weight and protein:DNA ratios in the urogenital sinus and the lateral vagina respectively showed no significant changes. Progesterone cytosol receptor concentration in the lateral vagina and urogenital sinus were high on day 0 and then declined until day 13. In contrast, there were no consistent effects on oestradiol receptor concentration.  相似文献

1. The relative importance of zooplankton grazing and nutrient limitation in regulating the phytoplankton community in the non-stratified Lake Kvie, Denmark, were measured nine times during the growing season.
2. Natural phytoplankton assemblage bioassays showed increasing importance of nutrient limitation during summer. Growth rates at ambient nutrient concentrations were continually below 0.12 per day, while co-enrichment with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to above concentration-saturated conditions enhanced growth rates from May to the end of July.
3. Stoichiometric ratios of important elements in seston (C : N, C : P, N : P), in lake water (TN : TP), in external loading (TN : TP) and in internal loading (DIN : DIP) were measured to determine whether N or P could be the limiting nutrient. TN : TP molar ratio of both lake water, benthic fluxes and external loading suggested P limitation throughout the growing season. However, seston molar ratios suggested moderate P-deficiency only during mid-summer.
4. Abundance and community structure of the zooplankton varied considerably through the season and proved to be important in determining the responses of algal assemblages to grazing. High abundance of cladocerans and rotifers resulted in significant grazing impact, while cyclopoid copepods had no significant effect on the phytoplankton biomass.
5. Regeneration of ammonium and phosphate by zooplankton were periodically important for phytoplankton growth. A comparison of nutrient regeneration by zooplankton with nutrient inputs from sediment and external sources indicated that zooplankton may contribute significantly in supplying N and P for the growth of phytoplankton.  相似文献

The microalga Porphyridium cruentum (Rhodophyta) has several industrial and pharmaceutical uses, especially for its polysaccharide production. This study aimed to investigate the influence of nitrogen levels as reflected by altered N:P ratios on the production and content of biomass and carbohydrate. N:P molar ratios were altered in batch cultures to range from 1.6 to 50 using the Redfield ratio of 1:16 as reference. Algal growth (estimated as final cell number, biomass concentration and maximum specific growth rate) was negatively affected at low N:P ratios. The optimal N:P ratio for growth was identified at 35–50, with specific growth rates of 0.19 day?1 and maximum cell concentrations of 59·108 cells L?1 and 1.2 g dry weight of biomass L?1. In addition, variation in cell size was seen. Cells with larger diameters were at higher N:P ratios and smaller cells at lower ratios. The cellular carbohydrate content increased under reduced nitrogen availability. However, because accumulation was moderate at the lowest N:P ratio, 0.4 g per g dry weight biomass compared to 0.24 at the Redfield ratio of 16:1, conditions for increased total carbohydrate formation were identified at the N:P ratios optimal for growth. Although phosphorus has long been considered an important factor in the growth of diverse biota such as bacteria, algae, and zooplankton, insect nutrition has classically focused on dietary protein and energy content. However, research in elemental stoichiometry has suggested that primary producer biomass has similar N:P ratios in aquatic and terrestrial systems, and phosphorus-rich herbivores in freshwater systems frequently face phosphorus-limited nutritional conditions. Therefore, herbivorous insects should also be prone to phosphorus limitation. We tested this prediction by rearing Manduca sexta larvae on artificial and natural (Datura wrightii leaves) diets containing varying levels of phosphorus (approximately 0.20, 0.55, or 1.2% phosphorus by dry weight). For both artificial and natural diets, increased dietary phosphorus significantly increased growth rates and body phosphorus contents, and shortened the time to the final instar molt. Caterpillars did not consistently exhibit compensatory feeding for phosphorus on either type of diet. The growth and body phosphorus responses were not explicable by changes in amounts of potassium or calcium, which co-varied with phosphorus in the diets. Concentrations of phosphorus in D. wrightii leaves collected in the field varied over a range in which leaf phosphorus is predicted to affect M. sexta's growth rates. These results suggest that natural variation in dietary phosphorus is likely to affect the growth rate and population dynamics of M. sexta, and perhaps larval insects more generally.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The specific productivities of algae and bacteria were measured in short-term (4 day) experiments consisting of enclosures with natural or reduced zooplankton biomass. Experiments were repeated five times over a season in each of two lakes that differed in the background concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC).
2. Algal biomass as estimated by chlorophyll a was suppressed in enclosures with ambient grazer levels in six of ten experiments and enhanced in one experiment. Distribution of chlorophyll among net and nanoplankton was not significantly affected by grazing.
3. Relative to enclosures with reduced zooplankton, normal grazer biomass (97–466μg 1−1 dry weight) enhanced specific algal productivity in only one of five experiments in the low DOC take and had no effect in all five experiments in the high DOC lake. The main effects of grazers on algae was through removal of biomass rather than through indirect changes in turnover rate.
4. Between experiments, bacterial density was either unaffected, or mildly enhanced (4–87%) in enclosures with ambient macrozooplankton compared to those with reduced levels. Bacterial productivity and turnover estimated by incorporation of [3H]thymidine into DNA showed different responses across experiments; increasing, declining or remaining the same with grazer minipulation. This variability was not related to differences in dissolved primary production or to background DOC between lakes or experiments. Comparison of bacterial productivities based on thymidine incorporation rates with changes in cell densities indicated that control of bacterial loss processes by macrozooplankton is more important than control of growth rates.  相似文献

1. Previous studies documented that zebra mussels became abundant in the Hudson River during 1992 causing an 80–90% reduction in phytoplankton biomass. This study used intervention time series analysis of abundance, biomass and reproduction over the period 1987–95 to assess changes in zooplankton in response to the invasion.
2. Zebra mussels caused a size-dependent decline in zooplankton. Microzooplankton, including tintinnid ciliates, rotifers and copepod nauplii all declined in 1992 and were scarce thereafter. Mean abundances of post-naupliar copepods and of cladocerans were also lower following the invasion but these changes were not statistically significant ( P > 0.05). Egg ratios and clutch sizes for the dominant cladoceran, Bosmina freyi , were not significantly related to zebra mussels, even though relatively low egg ratios were observed after the invasion.
3. The strong declines in microzooplankton were probably caused by direct zebra mussel predation. Estimated consumption rates by mussels were roughly equivalent to maximum microzooplankton growth rates.
4. The total biomass of zooplankton in the Hudson River declined by more than 70% following the invasion. Annual average zooplankton biomass was correlated with chlorophyll, but biomass per unit chlorophyll in the Hudson River was much lower than in lakes. The present study hypothesizes that this lower biomass reflects limitations by riverine flow and by predation during summer.  相似文献

A laboratory calibration study was undertaken with juvenile Sepia officinalis (80-85 g initial wet weight) to investigate the effects of different food rations and different starving intervals on RNA/dry weight (DW) ratios and RNA/DNA ratios in cephalopod mantle muscle at two different temperatures. The digestive gland index was also used as an additional indicator of recent growth. High food rations and low temperature went along with high RNA/DW ratios and high RNA/DNA ratios. Starving resulted in a linear decline in growth performance and a concomitant decrease in RNA/DW and RNA/DNA ratio, with RNA/DNA ratios representing the growth data better. RNA/DNA ratios decreased faster at higher temperatures. A fluorimetric assay for nucleic acid analysis was optimized for cephalopod mantle tissues and yielded reproducible RNA/DNA ratios with a relative variance below 10%. Thus, it may be possible to use this estimator of recently encountered feeding regime for the evaluation of mortality rates of early teuthid paralarvae to eventually support stock management. Also, log relative digestive gland weight showed a strong relationship with starving time, but, surprisingly, not with temperature. Data from the two temperatures analyzed could be combined to form a common regression line of relative digestive gland index with starving time. This indicator for recent growth might be especially suitable for large specimens with a well-developed digestive gland.  相似文献
