The time of ovulation, artificial insemination (AI), conception and conception rate were studied in 412 Icelandic dairy cows from 2 different areas during a period of 3 years. To assess these parameters the progesterone level was measured in sequential samples of milk and the status of the genital organs evaluated by monthly rectal palpations. The time and number of AI was recorded and the conception rate calculated and compared with the other parameters. Furthermore, the length of the calving interval and gestation period were determined. The effects of year, season, area, age, herd and parity on these parameters were evaluated. The overall mean for the time of first post partum ovulation was 42 days and varied from 29 to 49 days between herds. This is a considerably longer time than recorded for many other breeds of dairy cows. The effects of season, area and herd were significant for the time of first post partum ovulation. The overall time of first post partum AI and conception were 74 days and 97 days, respectively. In spite of late onset of ovarian activity in Icelandic dairy cows, these two pararmeters are comparable to those of other breeds of cattle. The effects of season, parity and herd were significant for these two parameters. The conception rate to first post partum AI was 59% and the number of AI per conception was 1.6. The time of conception correlated closely (r = 0.5) with the time of first post partum AI, but the conception rate to first AI increased and the number of AI per conception decreased with increasing time of first post partum AI. The calving interval was 382 days and the gestation period was 287 days.  相似文献

Effects on reproduction in a total of 135 dairy cows managed for calving intervals of 12, 15 or 18 months (72, 38 and 25 cows respectively) were studied. The cows were of the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) and the Swedish Freisian Breed (SLB) and were housed in 2 different herds with 3 different management systems (tied, loose, and tied but milked in a milking parlour; mixed). The cows in one of the herds (48 cows) were assigned for milking either 2 times or 3 times a day. When comparing conception rate at 1st insemination (AI) and the percentage of cows finally pregnant, we found no significant differences between the 3 calving interval groups, however, a tendency for a higher conception rate with a 15 months' interval compared with a 12 months' interval was found in one of the herds (50% vs 41.5%). The percentage of finally pregnant animals varied between 81% and 100%, but this variation was mainly attributed to the herd rather than calving interval group. A significantly higher percentage of cows was treated for anoestrous in the 12-month group than in the 15-month group in one of the herds (28.6% vs. 5.3%). The frequency of ovulations with external heat signs increased with ovulation number up to the 4th ovulation and thereafter remained stable. No significant difference was found in number of AIs required per conception with respect to calving intervals, breeds, or milking frequency groups. However, cows milked 3 times a day had a significantly longer interval from the 1 st AI to conception compared with cows milked 2 times a day (45.8 days vs 17.6 days, p<.01). Cows kept loose exhibited 1st ovulatory oestrous, approximately 2 weeks earlier (55.9 days vs 69.7 days, p<.05) than their herd mates kept tied. In conclusion, our study shows that lengthening the calving interval to 15 or 18 months may have a positive influence on reproduction in terms of less need for treatments of ovarian disorders and higher conception rates. Our results also indicate that milking 3 times a day may have negative effects, and keeping cows in a loose-housing management system may have positive effects on ovarian function. kw|Keywords|k]reproduction; k]extended calving intervals; k]cattle; k]milking frequency  相似文献

Three strains of Holstein-Friesian (HF): high production North American (HP), high durability North American (HD) and New Zealand (NZ) cows were assigned, within strain, to one of three pasture-based feeding systems: (1) the Moorepark (control) system (MP), (2) a high concentrate system (HC), (3) a high stocking rate system (HS). Ovarian function was assessed using milk progesterone samples, collected from 117 cows in each of two successive years, with 81 animals being common to both years. Milk samples were collected thrice weekly, beginning day 5 post-calving and continued to day 26 after first AI. Data from animals subsequent to reproductive hormonal treatment were removed from the analysis. Feed system and strain of HF by feeding system interaction had no significant effect on re-establishment of ovarian activity and subsequent conception rate to first AI. Strain of HF had no significant effect on interval to commencement of luteal activity (CLA). The mean interval to CLA was 32.9 days (S.E. 1.18), ranged from 6 to 100 days, with 42 and 85% of cows ovulating by day 26 and 60, respectively. The HD (62%) and NZ (57%) strains had a higher conception rate to first AI than the HP strain (40%), (P < 0.05). Retrospective analysis categorised all cows into four quartiles based on interval to CLA (< 20 days, 20-26 days, 27-44 days and > 44 days). Cows in the first and fourth CLA quartiles had a longer calving to conception interval (P < 0.05). Cows with abnormal progesterone profiles (38.4%) had an earlier mean calving date, with a similar submission rate and conception rate to first service compared to cows with normal hormonal profiles. There was no significant difference in luteal activity or reproduction performance, apart from calving to conception interval, between cows that conceived or did not conceive to first service. These results indicate that while conception rate to first service differed between strains of HF cow, this was not associated with differences in the onset and pattern of luteal activity post partum.  相似文献

Reports on callitrichid monkeys have not revealed a significant effect of nursing on interbirth intervals or on post-partum to ovulation intervals. We examined 25 post-partum intervals in cotton-top tamarin females to determine whether nursing infants would affect the length of the post-partum to ovulation interval. Urinary LH/CG and oestrone conjugates were measured in urine samples collected in the 6 weeks after birth. The post-partum to ovulation interval is the number of days between parturition and the rise of urinary LH and oestrone conjugates associated with ovulation. There was an 84% conception rate post partum. Neither mother's parity nor sex of the infants influenced the length of the post-partum to ovulation interval. The post-partum to ovulation interval for females nursing 2 infants was twice as long as for those not nursing or nursing 1 infant (P less than 0.05). The range of post-partum to ovulation interval lengths was more variable in nursing than in non-nursing females (P less than 0.01). Females spent less than 50% of observed time in contact and less than 20% of observed time nursing their infants. Neither the number of tamarins within the family nor the amount of time the mother was in contact with infants correlated with the length of the post-partum to ovulation interval. However, there was a positive correlation between the percentage time that mothers nursed 1 infant at a time and the length of the post-partum to ovulation interval (r = 0.75, P less than 0.02). The underlying mechanisms of suckling-induced delay of ovulation are present in the cotton-top tamarin as in other primate species. However, these nursing effects do not cause the substantial delay in fertility post partum that is associated with non-callitrichid primates.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine relationships between the uterine microflora and reproductive characteristics of dairy cows. Uterine lumina were swabbed during estrus immediately prior to artificial insemination (A I). Swabbings were cultured for bacteria and accessed for cytologic evidence of inflammation. The time of sampling averaged 104 d post partum. Bacteria in the uterus were cultured from 65% of the cows (n = 85). The number of cows with any given microbial genus ranged from 1 to 35 and the number of different genera per cow ranged from 0 to 8. There were on significant correlations between amount and type of uterine microflora, days post partum, numbers of observed estrus, conception rate and uterine inflammation. The number of observed estrus periods was not correlated with the presence of aerobic bacteria. No significant relationships were found between microbes and uterine inflammation or conception to the A.I. service at the time of sampling. A negative correlation between uterine inflammation and conception approached significance (r=-0.24, P > 0.10). Acquisition of uterine lumen samples by the technique utilized had no effect on conception to A I service.  相似文献

Plasma progesterone concentrations in jugular vein blood samples collected every other day after calving from 13 Friesian dairy cows indicated that ovarian cyclic activity was initiated by 16.6 +/- 1.1 (s.e.m.) days post partum, except for 1 cow which did not resume cyclic activity until Day 98 post partum. Rectal palpation of the ovaries indicated that a developing follicle was recognizable at a mean time of 15.7 +/- 2.0 days after calving. During the first oestrous cycle after parturition there was a significantly shorter period when plasma progesterone levels were elevated than during the next 2 cycles. Concentrations of progesterone, LH, FSH and prolactin were determined for 4 cows, in blood samples taken every 6 h from 2 to 36 days post partum. Tonic LH release was lower during the first 10 days than subsequently, but the lack of change in pattern for FSH suggests dissimilar control mechanisms for these hormones during this time. Three cows showed evidence of a resumption of ovarian cyclicity during the sampling period: in 2 there was an initial LH surge of a magnitude which would normally give rise to ovulation, followed 4 days later by an increase in plasma progesterone lasting only 5 and 9 days. This progesterone was considered to be of follicular origin. A second LH surge was followed by the presence of a corpus luteum.  相似文献

Holstein heifers were divided into three groups of 27 at least 60 days before any were inseminated to evaluate gross effects on ovarian activity when urea was fed continuously for more than 2 years. Groups were reduced to 21 heifers each before calving. In Groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively, urea nitrogen replaced 0, 22 and 45% of plant nitrogen in heifer rations from insemination to mid pregnancy, 0, 8 and 16% there-after until 2 weeks before calving, and 0, 18 and 36% precalving and during lactation. The rations were blended and fed free-choice. Dry matter in the lactation ration was 44% corn silage, 10% alfalfa bromegrass silage and 46% concentrate. Body weight increases were similar on each ration through second calving. Likewise, estrous cycles and intervals between inseminations were similar. After the second calving, groups were not different for time to first ovulation or for intervals between ovulations. In general, urea did not affect gross measures of ovarian activity. Effects of urea on abortion, retained fetal membranes, and conception efficiency were reviewed.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effects of abnormal ovarian cycles during the pre-service postpartum period on subsequent reproductive performance of high-producing Holstein cows. The study was conducted in a commercial dairy farm with approximately 150 lactating cows, in a subtropical region of Japan. Animals were kept in free-stall barn, and fed a total mixed ration. Cows that calved from June 2001 to July 2002 were included in the study. Milk samples were collected twice weekly from 2 to 11 weeks postpartum, and progesterone concentrations in skim milk were determined by ELISA. After a voluntary waiting period of 40 days, cows detected in estrus were bred by artificial insemination (AI). Pregnancy was confirmed by palpation per rectum 40-70 days after AI. Out of a total of 91 cases, 39 (42.9%) had normal ovarian cycles (ovulation within 45 days after calving, followed by normal ovarian cycles), 32 (35.2%) had prolonged luteal phase (i.e. luteal activity for >20 days), and 12 (13.2%) had anovulation or delayed first ovulation (i.e. first ovulation did not occur until >45 days after calving). The remaining (8.8%) had other types of abnormalities. When compared with cows with a normal ovarian cycle, prolonged luteal phase cows had a lower 100 days AI submission rate, conception rate and pregnancy rate (84.2% versus 56.3%; P<0.05, 50% versus 16.7%; P<0.05 and 42.1% versus 9.4%; P<0.01, respectively), and longer intervals to first AI and to conception ( 67+/-6 days versus 98+/-7 days and 95+/-9 days versus 136+/-11 days; P<0.01 for each). Similarly, when compared with cows with normal ovarian cycles, those with anovulation had lower 100 days conception rate and pregnancy rate (50% versus 0%; P<0.05 and 42.1% versus 0%; P<0.01, respectively), and longer intervals to first AI and to conception ( 67+/-6 days versus 93+/-12 days; P<0.05 and 95+/-9 days versus 155+/-14 days; P<0.01, respectively). Survival analysis of the data for calving to conception interval showed that cows with prolonged luteal phase or anovulation were getting pregnant at a slower rate, and took longer to get pregnant than the cows with normal resumption of ovarian cyclicity postpartum. In conclusion, abnormal ovarian cycles during the pre-service period postpartum adversely affected reproductive performance, including AI submission rate, pregnancy rate, interval to first AI, and calving to conception interval in high-producing Holstein cows.  相似文献

In the purpose to provide further information in respect of the relationship between metabolism and post partum (PP) ovarian activity resumption in dairy cows, the aim of the present study was to characterize the energy balance (EB) and leptin, NEFA and IGF-I plasma levels in Swedish Red and White (SRW) cows with and without ovarian activity re-initiation within 7 weeks PP. The study was conducted on 12 primiparous SRW cows fed the same diet as total mixed ration for ad libitum intake. The EB was calculated weekly from parturition until seven weeks PP. Blood samples were collected weekly from one week before until 7 weeks after calving for leptin, NEFA and IGF-I analysis. For progesterone (P4) analysis, blood samples were collected two times per week from parturition until the end of the study. P4 profile was used in addition to the clinical examination to detect cows with and without ovarian activity resumption. The clinical and ultrasonographic examination, coupled with P4 profile analysis showed the resumption of ovarian activity within 7 weeks after calving in 8 (group A) and no ovarian resumption in 4 cows (group B). No significant differences were detected in the whole period of observation in the amount of milk production between the two groups, while the mean milk protein content was significantly lower in group B at the third week PP. The calculated EB was negative in both groups in the first three weeks after calving, but more marked in group B. NEFA and Leptin plasma levels did not show significant differences between the two groups. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that, when low milk producing primiparous cows are concerned, no significant differences in BW loss, milk yield, EB and leptin and NEFA plasma levels between the cows with and without resumption of ovarian activity within 7 weeks post partum were seen. However, significantly higher IGF-I levels in the first two weeks after calving were found in cows with post partum ovarian activity resumption, highlighting the important role of IGF-I as sensitive signal between metabolism and reproduction.  相似文献

The variations in lipid metabolism according to the physiological stage and their relationship to the resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclicity were assessed in Limousine beef cows fed a grass diet over 3 yr. Weekly blood samples were collected from 59 cows beginning 10 wk before to 20 wk after calving to evaluate serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations and electrophoretic lipoprotein fractions. After parturition, progesterone concentrations were also measured at weekly intervals to determine time of resumption of ovulation. Cows were categorized by resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclicity into 3 groups: early (4 to 6 wk post partum, n = 36); mid (7 to 10 wk post partum, n = 46) and late (after 11 wk post partum, n = 38). Higher serum triglyceride values (P<0.05) were observed during the last 10 wk of pregnancy (0.36+/-0.15 g/L) than during the first 20 wk of suckling (0.29+/-0.09 g/L). Cholesterol values decreased significantly (P<0.05) at the end of pregnancy, were minimal (1.01+/-0.03 g/L) at parturition, and increased again up to 9 wk post calving. Increased cholesterolemia and low serum triglyceride values after calving could be linked to the increased bovine alpha-lipoprotein fraction and decreased beta fraction. Serum triglyceride concentrations were not related to the resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclicity. Higher serum cholesterol values were observed from 2 wk before to 4 wk after calving in cows with early rather than mid and late resumption of ovarian cyclicity. Therefore, modifications in lipid metabolism during the puerperium seem to be related to resumption of cyclicity during the early postpartum period.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows treated with GnRH and/or PGF2a for synchronization of estrus and ovulation. Between Days 43 and 57 post partum, a total of 374 dairy cows was divided into 4 groups. Cows in Group 1 (n = 62) were treated with 25 mg, i.m. PGF2a on Days 43 and 57; cows in Group 2 (n = 65) were not treated at this time; cows in Group 3 (n = 118) were treated with 100 ug, i.m. GnRH on Day 50, 25 mg, i.m. PGF2a on Day 57, 100 ug, i.m. GnRH on Day 59, and time-inseminated 16 h later; cows in Group 4 (n = 129) were treated with 25 mg, i.m. PGF2a once on Day 57. Cows in Groups 1 and 4 were inseminated at an induced estrus within 7 d after the last PGF2a treatment, and cows in Group 2 were inseminated at a noninduced estrus within a corresponding period of time. Conception rate, estrus detection rate and pregnancy rate were analyzed using logistic regression, and controlled for lactation number, body condition score and time of year. Days from calving to conception were analyzed using the GLM procedures of SAS, and the model included group, body condition score, lactation number, time of year, and their interactions. Cows in Group 3 had a significantly higher pregnancy rate than cows in Groups 1, 2 and 4. Orthogonal contrasts of mean days from calving to conception showed that cows in Group 3 had significantly (P < 0.01) less days from calving to conception than cows in Group 1 and Group 4. There was a significant effect of time of year on pregnancy rate and days from calving to conception, but there was no interaction between time of year and these reproductive characteristics. There was no effect of body condition score and lactation number on the reproductive characteristics evaluated. From the results of this study, it was concluded that better reproductive performance was observed in cows inseminated at a synchronized ovulation than in those inseminated at a synchronized estrous period.  相似文献

The present study examined ovarian changes preceding the resumption of the ovarian cycle in postpartum dairy cows with different parities under similar body nutritional conditions. In postpartum primi- (n=6), bi- (n=4), and multiparous (n=6) Holstein dairy cows, ovarian ultrasonographic observations starting at 7 days after calving were performed every other day and then daily after the confirmation of clinical signs of oestrus for the detection of postpartum first ovulation. Blood samples were collected at the same time as ultrasonography and analyzed for oestradiol and progesterone to monitor ovarian activity. To evaluate the nutritional condition of the cows, body weight and body condition score (BCS, 1=emaciated to 5=obese) were measured weekly and blood samples for the analysis of glucose, insulin, and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) were collected at the same time until postpartum second ovulation. Dominant follicles (>8mm in diameter) of the first follicular wave were detected at 7 days after calving in all cows. The first wave follicle ovulated in five of six multiparous cows, whereas no first wave follicle ovulated in any of the primiparous cows. The days to first ovulation after calving in primiparous cows (31.8+/-8.3 days) were significantly greater (p<0.05) than those in multiparous cows (17.3+/-6.3 days), but were not significantly different from biparous cows (28.8+/-8.6 days). There was a significant relationship between parity and days to first ovulation after calving (p<0.05). BCS was maintained at a level of more than 2.5 during the postpartum period in all cows and there was no influence of parity on postpartum changes in BCS, glucose, insulin, or NEFA throughout the experiment. The present study demonstrated a negative relationship between parity and number of days from calving to first ovulation in dairy cows under similar body nutritional conditions. It is possible that the influence of parity on the resumption of ovarian cycle is modulated by the factors different from the nutrition-related changes during the postpartum period in dairy cows.  相似文献

Beef cows (n = 294) calving between November and April in six states were used to evaluate the effects of postpartum diet and calf separation on body weight, body condition score (BCS), reproductive performance, and weaning weight of calves. In each state, half of the 48 cows that calved during 60 d were group fed an additional 4.5 kg of a 20% crude protein supplement daily for 28 d starting an average of 30 d post partum (flush). Calves were separated from half of the flush and half of the nonflush cows for 48 h at 14 and 28 d after the beginning of flush. Progesterone was quantified in plasma samples obtained weekly during a 56-d breeding period to assess ovarian luteal activity. The breeding period started at the first calf separation. BCS ranged from 3.3 to 5.6 among states (on a scale of 1 to 9) at the start of the flush but was similar for treatments within a state. There was a state x flush (P < 0.008) effect on body weight at the end of the flush period. Weaning weights were influenced by state x separation x flush (P < 0.06) and were greatest for flush nonseparated calves in five of six states. There were state x flush (P < 0.08) and separation (P < 0.04) effects on ovarian luteal activity at the start of the breeding period. Flush and separation tended to increase ovarian luteal activity. During the breeding period, ovarian luteal activity was influenced only by state but there was a state x separation x flush effect (P < 0.001) on the number of weeks post partum to onset of ovarian luteal activity. Conception rate and days postpartum to conception were not influenced by either separation or flush but were affected by state (P < 0.001). These data indicate that flushing may increase weaning weights of calves and calf separation may hasten the onset of postpartum ovarian luteal activity, but conception rate and days postpartum to conception for cows in thin to moderate body condition were not influenced by the calf separation or flushing treatments.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of metabolic, endocrine and energy status on onset of ovarian cycle, days open (DO), and conception at first service in 90 multiparous Holstein cows, housed at a research farm. Dry matter intake, milk yield and body weight were measured daily from Week 2 antepartum (a.p.) to Week 20 postpartum (p.p.). Milk composition was determined four times per week and milk acetone was measured weekly. Blood samples for the determination of glucose, non-esterified fatty acids, cholesterol, creatinine, albumin, urea, beta-hydroxybutyrate, leptin, insulin, insulin-like growth factor-1, growth hormone, 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T(3)), and thyroxine (T(4)) were taken 2 weeks a.p., in Weeks 1-16, and 20 p.p. between 7:30 and 9:00 h. The onset of ovarian cycle was specified by weekly gynecological examination and by skim milk progesterone determination by radioimmunoassay (twice per week). Energy balance (EB) traits were calculated and expressed as accumulated negative EB from calving to EB equilibrium, EB nadir (EBN), rate of EB recovery after EBN (EBR), and time from calving to EBN and to EB equilibrium, respectively. The onset of ovarian cycle p.p. was not related to EB. However, a low degree of EBN and a fast EBR were associated with fewer DO, and EB at first service was positively related to conception. High plasma levels of T(3) and T(4) p.p. were associated with an early start of ovarian cycle, and high concentrations of glucose and cholesterol with a short calving to conception interval. Conception at first service was positively related to EB at first service and progesterone concentration 10-13 days after first service. In conclusion, thyroid hormones may play an important role in resumption of ovarian cyclicity p.p., and a good energy status enhances the chance of conception at first service and shortens DO.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine cow factors that influence conception rates after timed artificial insemination (TAI) on a commercial dairy farm. In Trial 1, 197 cows were synchronized by an administration of 25 mg of dinoprost between Days 48 and 54 post partum and again 14 days later. Cows were inseminated 66 and 90 hours after the second treatment. In Trial 2, 186 cows were treated with an Ovsynch protocol consisting of an administration of 0.02 mg of buserelin between Days 62 and 68 post partum, a treatment with 0.75 mg of tiaprost 7 days later and a second treatment with buserelin 48 h later. Cows were bred 16 to 20 hours after the last treatment. Cows with abnormal vaginal discharge at the time of insemination were excluded from AI. Lactation number, milk yield, fat and protein content of milk, signs of endometritis at an examination 14 to 20 days post partum and month of breeding were included as potential factors influencing conception on TAI. Conception rates after timed breeding were 32.0% and 30.6% in Trials 1 and 2, respectively. Logistic regression revealed that neither milk production parameters nor endometritis at post partum examination influenced conception rates in either of the two timed breeding protocols. Only parity showed an effect (P=0.012) in Trial 2. Primiparous cows were more likely to conceive after timed breeding than older cows (43.5 vs. 23.1%). An effect of parity, however, was not observed in Trial 1. It can be concluded that neither milk production nor endometritis at an examination 14 to 20 days post partum influence conception rates after TAI if cows with abnormal vulval discharge at the designated time of AI are excluded from breeding.  相似文献

Prolonged postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows is a source of economic loss to beef cattle producers. Duration of postpartum acyclicity is influenced by suckling status, nutritional status, calving season, age, and several other factors. Although uterine involution begins and ovarian follicular waves resume soon after parturition, dominant follicles of these waves fail to ovulate, due to a failure to undergo terminal maturation. As a result, postpartum anovulatory dominant follicles are smaller than the ovulatory follicles in cyclic cows. Failure of postpartum dominant follicles to undergo terminal maturation is due to absence of appropriate LH pulses, a prerequisite for follicular terminal maturation prior to ovulation. Absence of LH pulses early post partum is primarily due to depletion of anterior pituitary LH stores, although GnRH pulses are also absent during this period due to suckling. Following replenishment of LH stores between Days 15 and 30 post partum, absence of LH pulses is due to continued sensitivity of the hypothalamic GnRH pulse-generator to the negative feedback effect of ovarian estradiol-17beta, which results in absence of GnRH pulses. This negative feedback effect of estradiol-17beta is modulated by suckling which stimulates release of endogenous opioid peptides from the hypothalamus. As the postpartum interval increases, sensitivity of the GnRH pulse-generator to the negative feedback effect of ovarian estradiol-17beta decreases. This is followed by an increasing frequency of GnRH discharges and LH pulses, terminal follicular maturation, ovulation, and continued cyclicity. The first ovulation post partum is usually followed by a short cycle due to premature luteolysis because of premature release of PGF2alpha from the uterine endometrium, which is possibly intensified by the suckling-induced oxytocin release from the posterior pituitary. A model for the postpartum ovulatory acyclicity and for the resumption of cyclicity is presented.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of prepartum somatotropin injection in late-pregnant Holstein heifers on metabolism, milk production and resumption of postpartum ovulation. For this study, 31 late-pregnant Holstein heifers were used. The heifers were assigned randomly into two treatments: (1) 500 mg sc injections of somatotropin (somatotropin treatment, n = 15) at -35 and -21 days, and, if pertinent, at -7 days from expected calving date and (2) no treatment (control group, n = 16). Blood samples were collected weekly from -5 to 7 weeks after calving. Heifers with progesterone concentrations in plasma above 1 ng/ml in two consecutive postpartum samples were considered as having resumed ovarian activity. A higher proportion (P = 0.04) of heifers treated with somatotropin resumed ovarian activity in the first 7 weeks post partum (73.3%; 11/15) compared with the control group (37.5%; 6/16). A higher number (P = 0.02) of heifers in the somatotropin treatment group also ovulated during the first postpartum follicular wave (53.3%; 8/15) compared with the control group (12.5%; 2/16), as indicated by the number of heifers ovulating in the first 3 weeks post partum. Pregnancy rate was not affected by treatments (P > 0.10) and averaged 40.0% (6/15) in somatotropin-treated and 25.0% (4/16) in control heifers when evaluated up to 150 days in milk. Somatotropin treatment increased the average daily milk production by 2.8 kg/cow per day (P < 0.0001) and reduced the somatic cell count (P = 0.009). Plasma IGF-I was higher (P < 0.05) for somatotropin-treated heifers in the prepartum period. Insulin and body condition score were higher (P < 0.05) and non-esterified fatty acids were lower (P < 0.05) for somatotropin-treated cows in the early postpartum period. In conclusion, somatotropin injection during the prepartum period in late-pregnant Holstein heifers was able to increase the proportion of heifers resuming ovarian activity early post partum, inspite of higher milk production.  相似文献

A heterologous double-antibody radioimmunoassay was used to measure plasma prolactin concentrations in 27 marmosets. The assay was valid for the marmoset because plasma levels of prolactin were increased in response to TRH and metoclopramide and suppressed in response to bromocriptine treatment. During the cycle there were no consistent changes in plasma prolactin concentrations. During lactation mothers suckling single or twin infants had higher prolactin levels than did non-suckling females and levels were highest with twins. No statistically significant delay in the resumption of ovulation post partum was observed for the suckling and non-suckling females; conception occurred in all but one marmoset by 70 days post partum. These results show that neither the suckling stimulus nor high levels of prolactin post partum delay the return of ovulation and fertility in the common marmoset, a result in contrast to that for all other primate species so far investigated.  相似文献

Wheat grain (WG) is unique in possessing extensive starch and nitrogen fermentation (i.e. >85% in ground and steam-processed WG), low cation-anion difference and high-intake properties, making it a potentially useful prepartal dietary choice. The objective was to determine the effects of WG provision to pre-partum first-calf heifers on metabolic, health and productive criteria during the transition period. WG replaced barley grain that was commonly used earlier. Fifteen Holstein heifers at 31 ± 6 days pre partum were blocked based on expected calving date and assigned to three treatments or feeding totally mixed rations containing either (i) barley grain (13.8%) and wheat bran (6.1%), (ii) 10% WG (WG10) or (iii) 18% WG (WG18; dry matter (DM) basis) from 31 days pre partum until calving. In replacing WG for barley grains, some changes in WG use and slight changes in soybean and cottonseed meals use were made to properly formulate balanced rations for net energy for lactation, CP, calcium and P. Prepartal diets contained no supplemental anionic salts. Cows were monitored until 21-day post partum and received the same early lactation diet. The prepartal provision of WG and related dietary changes reduced urine pH at 7-day pre partum, and elevated blood calcium and glucose at 7-day pre partum and at 3-day post partum. Milk fat and protein yields were increased during the 21 days post partum by prepartal WG provision and related diet changes. Blood albumin, globulins, total proteins and urea concentrations were similar among treatments. Feeding diets with WG did not affect body condition score, calving difficulty, calf weight, placenta weight and the time interval from calving to placenta expulsion. It is suggested that prepartal provision of WG with necessary dietary changes led to simultaneous improvements in energy and calcium status of the heifers experiencing their first periparturient phase without compromising parturition status.  相似文献

Primiparous crossbred does were remated on Day 1 (n = 15) or 14 (n = 25) post partum and killed on Day 10 post coitum to assess their fertility. Blood samples were taken during the pre- (0-12 h post coitum) and post- (1-10 days post coitum) ovulatory periods and plasma was assayed for luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, oestradiol-17 beta and progesterone. Ovulation response was significantly greater (P less than 0.01) and ovulation rate significantly lower (P less than 0.001) in does mated on Day 1 than in those mated on Day 14 post partum. Does failing to ovulate on Day 14 post partum exhibited no preovulatory LH surge and had significantly lower (P less than 0.05) premating concentrations of oestradiol-17 beta and prolactin than those ovulating at this time. No significant differences in hormone concentrations were observed during the preovulatory period between does ovulating on Days 1 and 14 post partum, with the exception of oestradiol-17 beta. Concentrations of this hormone were significantly lower (P less than 0.01) in does mated on Day 1, at 1 h post coitum. We conclude that (i) fertility was affected by the remating interval after parturition, (ii) ovulation failure was associated with an absence of the preovulatory LH surge and a reduction in premating concentrations of oestradiol-17 beta and prolactin and (iii) the lower ovulation rate in early lactation was apparently caused by a reduction in ovarian competence to respond to the gonadotrophic stimulus.  相似文献
