Five lambs were inoculated with a granulocytic Ehrlichia species originally isolated from a Swedish horse with granulocytic ehrlichiosis (EGE). The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the Swedish Ehrlichia sp. causing EGE was identical to the sequence of the agent causing human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE). After the inoculation, infected neutrophils and a low serologic response were seen in all lambs, but no clinical symptoms were observed. In one lamb 17% of the neutrophils were infected without a corresponding fever. Six weeks later the lambs were inoculated with an ovine isolate of E. phagocytophila. After challenge with E. phagocytophila the lambs reacted with fever and infected granulocytes. The results presented herein show that the equine Ehrlichia isolate was infective for lambs but generated weak immune response and no distinctive protection from subsequent challenge with E. phagocytophila.  相似文献

Active immunization against inhibin has been shown to advance puberty and increase ovulation rate in ewe lambs; but in ram lambs, effects on puberty and sperm production are equivocal. The objective of the present study was to determine whether active immunization against an inhibin alpha-subunit peptide advances the onset of puberty in ram lambs. St. Croix hair sheep ram lambs were assigned to inhibin-immunized (n = 7) and control (n = 8) treatment groups. Lambs in the inhibin-immunized group were immunized against a synthetic peptide-carrier protein conjugate, alpha-(1-25)-human alpha-globulin (halpha-G), and control lambs were immunized against halpha-G. Lambs were immunized at 3, 7, 13, 19, 25, 31, and 37 weeks of age. On the day of immunization a blood sample was collected and lambs were weighed. Another blood sample was collected 1 week following each immunization. At 20 weeks of age additional blood samples were collected at 20 min intervals for 8h. Beginning at 20 weeks of age and at weekly intervals thereafter, scrotal circumference (SC) was measured and semen was collected using electroejaculation. A subsequent ejaculate was collected 1 week following onset of puberty, which was defined as the week of age when an ejaculate first contained > or =50 x 10(6) sperm cells. In control lambs, plasma alpha-(1-25)-antibody (Ab) was nondetectable. In inhibin-immunized lambs, alpha-(1-25)-Ab titer increased from 7 to 25 weeks of age and then plateaued at a level that varied (P<0.001) among animals. Body weight and SC of control and inhibin-immunized lambs were similar at the onset of puberty. At pubertal onset inhibin-immunized lambs were older than control lambs (31.9+/-0.5 vs. 29.5+/-0.7 weeks of age, P<0.05). Plasma FSH concentrations were similar in control and inhibin-immunized lambs from 3 to 38 weeks of age. Plasma LH levels were lower (P<0.01) in inhibin-immunized than control lambs. During the 8-h blood sampling period at 20 weeks of age, LH and testosterone concentrations were lower (P<0.05) in inhibin-immunized than control ram lambs, and the LH pulse frequency was similar in the two groups of animals. The decreased LH secretion is consistent with the immunoneutralization of a putative inhibin alpha-subunit-related peptide that stimulates LH secretion in ram lambs. Present findings show that active immunization against an inhibin alpha-peptide delays rather than advances puberty in ram lambs.  相似文献

Active immunization of Merino and crossbred ewe lambs early in life with a partly purified inhibin derived from bovine follicular fluid (bFF) advanced their puberty. This occurred whether the lambs were immunized from 3 weeks of age or from 9 weeks of age or just 3 times between 3 and 9 weeks. However, the effect was more obvious with multiple injections starting at 3 weeks of age. The ovulation rate of the immunized lambs was significantly higher than that of the control ewes. When lambs were subjected to multiple immunizations the increased ovulation rate persisted in Merinos for at least 1 year after immunization ceased. The lambs injected 3 times only (at 3, 6 and 9 weeks of age) did not show any increase in ovulation rate. Plasma concentrations of FSH and LH measured in blood samples taken 1 week after immunization were not significantly different between the treatment groups. Daily sperm output in the urine and testis diameter were measured in ram lambs from the same breeds and flocks as the ewe lambs. Immunization with the inhibin preparation from 3 weeks of age resulted in a significant increase in daily sperm output (4255 +/- 701 vs 2344 +/- 344 x 10(6), P less than 0.01) and testis diameter (5.21 +/- 0.3 vs 4.33 +/- 0.2 cm, P less than 0.05) in Merino rams examined in the non-breeding season when the rams were aged 23 months. Although the same trend was seen in the following year the differences were not significant. Immunization from 9 weeks of age had no effect. A similar increase in daily sperm output was seen (at 20 and 25 months of age) in crossbred rams immunized from 3 weeks of age but the difference was not significant. Plasma concentrations of FSH (but not LH) in samples from rams immunized from 3 weeks of age were significantly higher than those of control rams at 7 and 60 weeks of age in Merino rams and at 23 and 31 weeks of age in crossbred rams. Plasma FSH concentrations at 21 and 26 weeks of age in the Merino rams immunized from 3 weeks of age were higher than those of control lambs, and these increases preceded a significant (P less than 0.05) increase in testicular diameter at 30 weeks of age (4.99 +/- 0.2 vs 4.37 +/- 0.2 cm). The effect of 2 different oxytetracycline treatments in acute E. phagocytophila infected lambs was investigated. Twenty 5-month-old lambs of the Dala and Rygja breeds were used. Ten lambs were inoculated intravenously with a stabilate of an ovine E. phagocytophila strain. On the third day of fever, 4 lambs were given long-acting oxytetracycline (Terramycin prolongatum vet?, Pfizer) (20 mg/kg) intramuscularly and another 4 lambs were given short-acting oxytetracycline (Terramycin vet?, Pfizer) (10 mg/kg) intravenously for 5 consecutive days. The lambs were examined for the presence of Ehrlichia infection by blood smear evaluation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and antibody titre against E. equi. One month after the last antibiotic treatment, 250 ml citrate blood from each of these lambs were inoculated into each of 10 susceptible lambs, which were observed during the following 6 weeks. The results indicate that oxytetracycline given in the acute stage of the infection may effectively teminate the development of fever, rickettsemia and weight reduction in E. phagocytophila infected lambs. No difference was observed between the 2 treatment groups. However, at least 3 of 8 antibiotic treated lambs (37.5%) were still infected with granulocytic Ehrlichia 3 months after treatment.  相似文献

In 1991, the experimental infection of a goat with pooled blood from goats that were positive for anti-Ehrlichia canis, E. risticii, E. equi and E. phagocytophila antibodies was monitored (physical examination, cell blood count, microscopical examination of blood smears, serology) for 180 days. The infection produced a clinical condition characterized by intermittent fever, anaemia and leukopenia with neutropenia during the first 40 days. Recurrent leukocytosis with lymphocytosis was noticed afterwards. A permanent high-level thrombocytosis appeared after the 18th day. During the first week, cytoplasmic basophilic inclusion bodies were seen in smears of peripheral venous blood stained with May-Grunwald-Giemsa, first in mononuclear cells and then in neutrophils (in max 3% of circulating leukocytes). Seroconversion occurred during the 2nd week and the highest antibody titre (IFAT) was registered vs E. equi (10,240) at the 19th day, vs E. canis (320) at the 24th and vs E. risticii (80) at the 30th day. At the end of the observation period the infected goat was still positive for E. equi (titre 160) and E. canis (titre 10) only. The preinoculation serum of the infected goat was reactive with E. phagocytophila antigen (serum was tested for IF antibodies to E. phagocytophila at 1:200 dilution only, because of the limited quantities of antigen available), but the qualitative evaluation of fluorescence showed an increase from the 7th day, maximum intensity between the 14th and the 40th day and passed to negative from the 74th day. Although it was based on microscopy and serology only and not carried out in a SPF goat, the above experiment gave evidence of the existence of species of the E. phagocytophila genogroup in Italy for the first time.  相似文献

We attempted to determine the degree of diversification of the microflora that allow the establishment of Bacteroides succinogenes S85 in the rumen of gnotoxenic lambs. Four lambs (group I) received an inoculum orally, composed of 182 noncellulolytic bacterial strains (inoculum 1) previously isolated from the rumen of conventional young lambs. Two lambs (group II) were inoculated with 32 strains (inoculum 2) selected among the 182 strains of inoculum 1. Two lambs (group III) received an inoculum (inoculum 3) composed of 106 noncellulolytic bacterial strains previously isolated from the rumen of meroxenic lambs. Two lambs (group IV) were inoculated with 16 strains (inoculum 4) chosen among the 106 strains of inoculum 3. All lambs were inoculated from birth except two lambs of group I, which were inoculated from 1 month of age. Each lamb then received orally a pure culture of B. succinogenes. This strain became established more easily in the rumen of lambs that had received complex inocula (group I). Its population reached a level close to that generally observed in conventional lambs (10(7)-10(8) bacteria.mL-1). In contrast, B. succinogenes became established in only one lamb of group II, but bacterial numbers varied considerably. In group III, repeated inoculations were necessary to obtain its definitive establishment (10(7)-10(8) bacteria.mL-1 after weaning). In spite of several inoculations, this cellulolytic species failed to establish in the rumen of lambs of group IV, which had received the less complex inoculum. The volatile fatty acid levels were very different from one lamb group to another. The present study surveyed the prevalence of natural infection of the sheep esphagus muscle with sarcocysts of Sarcocystis ovicanis and examined induction of protective immunity using UV-attenuated sporocysts. The overall prevalence of natural infection of the sheep was 95%. Infectivity of the collected sarcocysts was confirmed by shedding of sporulated oocysts after feeding infected esophageal tissues to dogs. To induce protective immunity, lambs were immunized 3 times (once a week) with 1.5 × 104 sporocysts exposed to UV-light for 30 min (UV-30 group) or 60 (UV-60 group) min and then challenged with 1.5 × 104 normal sporocysts at the 3rd week post the 1st vaccination. These lambs showed high survival and less clinical signs of sarcocystosis than normal infected lambs. The attenuated sporocysts produced abnormal cysts; small in size and detached from the muscle fiber. These abnormalities were more obvious in UV-60 group than UV-30 group. Also, the IFN-γ level and lymphocyte percentage were increased while the total leukocyte count was decreased in the UV-60 group compared with other groups. The high level of IFN-γ may be an evidence for the induction of Th1 responses which may have protective effect against a challenge infection.  相似文献

Sequential studies of the pulmonary vascular response to leukotriene D4 (LTD4) and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in the immediate newborn period were performed in lambs, instrumented in utero and delivered vaginally. Compounds were tested in fully conscious 1.5-day-old lambs and the study was repeated 1 week later. Bolus injections of PGD2 (0.05-2.0 micrograms/kg) or LTD4 (0.01-1.0 micrograms/kg) were made into the main pulmonary artery or aorta while pulmonary blood flow and aortic, pulmonary artery, and left and right atrial pressures were monitored continuously. PGD2 was a systemic constrictor regardless of age. In lambs 1.5 days of age, it decreased pulmonary vascular pressure and resistance by 6% (p less than 0.05) and 15% (p less than 0.05), respectively, while 1 week later it increased pulmonary vascular resistance by 18% (p less than 0.05). In contrast, LTD4 was a pulmonary and systemic vasoconstrictor in both the early and late newborn, the threshold dose being between 0.01 and 0.05 micrograms/kg at either age. The decrease in pulmonary blood flow and the increase in pressure and resistance were greater in older animals. In lambs 1.5 days of age, LTD4 (1 micrograms/kg) increased pulmonary vascular resistance by 66.1% (p less than 0.05) and 1 week later by 210% (p less than 0.001). These sequential observations in the same animal indicate that unlike PGD2, LTD4 is a pulmonary vasoconstrictor regardless of age, and its effectiveness increases significantly with age. These results support previous reports that PGD2 action in the pulmonary circulation changes shortly after birth from dilation to constriction.  相似文献

In two trials, lambs were trickle infected with 400 or 1000 infective larvae of Haemonchus contortus (HcL(3)), twice weekly for 4 weeks from the day of birth. Following anthelminthic treatment at 6 weeks (Trial 1) or 7 weeks of age (Trial 2), lambs were challenged 1 week later with a trickle infection totalling 5000 (Trial 1) or 10000 HcL(3) (Trial 2). In both cases, significant protection (P<0.05) ranging from 42 to 79% was achieved against egg and worm counts. Serum antibody responses as well as abomasal lymph node cell proliferation and production of interferon-gamma or interleukin (IL)-5 did not differ significantly between immunised and control lambs. The results are consistent with earlier findings that neonatal lambs can generate protective immunity against Trichostrongylus colubriformis, but the underlying mechanism(s) remain to be determined.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The effects of age and sex of the cat on oocyst shedding, multiplication of Toxoplasma gondii in tissues of cats, and acquisition of immunity were investigated after oral inoculation of cats with Toxoplasma cysts. Twenty-five cats varying in age from 1 week to 39 months were killed 7-97 days after inoculation with T. gondii. Homogenates of brain, heart, mesenteric lymph nodes, retina, and blood from these cats were inoculated into mice to test for Toxoplasma infectivity. Toxoplasma was isolated more frequently and in higher titers in mice receiving inocula from cats of the youngest age group (1 week old). Toxoplasma gondii was isolated from tissues of only 2 of 21 cats older than 2 months (at the time of inoculation), although all of the animals shed oocysts within 1 week after ingesting the parasites. The number of oocysts shed varied among littermates of the same sex and between sexes. Generally, cats younger than 12 months shed more oocysts than older cats. The number of oocysts shed by older cats varied considerably; males generally shed more oocysts than the females. However, the numbers of cats examined were too small for statistical comparison. Nevertheless, the observations suggest that cats older than 12 months should not be used in experiments where numbers of oocysts shed is critical.  相似文献

Fourteen ewes were orally dosed with 2000 E. granulosus eggs at 2 weeks of age, were mated at 19 months, and produced lambs when the cysts were 2 years old. One week after parturition, all 14 ewes had 'Arc 5' antibodies in their serum, as did 11/14 of their lambs. Fourteen uninfected ewes were immunized three times before parturition with E. granulosus eggs injected intramuscularly. Cysts grew at the first, or first and second site, but not the third, indicating that the ewes were immune prior to parturition. Most sera from these ewes and their lambs, and from 14 control ewes and their lambs, produced precipitin arcs with hydatid cyst fluid, but no 'Arc 5'. All lambs were challenged with 500 eggs 2 weeks after birth. At necropsy, cyst numbers within groups ranged from 3 to > 200, but there was no significant difference between the three groups of lambs. The immunized ewes did not pass a protection to their lambs that was effective when the lambs were challenged. 'Arc 5' antibodies were induced by prolonged infection with cysts, and were not seen in the sera of ewes immunized with eggs, although the eggs developed into cysts at the injection sites. 'Arc 5' antibodies did not protect lambs against infection, and were not correlated with protection in ewes. Subcutaneous injection of oncospheres into four ewes from each group at the time of lamb challenge showed that the immunized ewes were immune to this method of challenge, but the infected and control ewes were not.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A study of the pathogenesis of Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection in lambs with observations on the contribution of gastrointestinal plasma loss. International Journal for Parasitology 3: 743–757. Increased effusion into the gut of51Cr-labelled plasma protein was observed in 20-week-old Merino lambs which showed signs of trichostrongylosis after administration of 100,000 T. colubriformis larvae. In another trial, similarly infected 12-week-old meat type crossbred lambs did not have elevated gastrointestinal plasma loss, or signs of trichostrongylosis, although they generally carried heavier worm burdens than the Merinos. Differences in breed susceptibility were considered a possible explanation. Nine-week-old Merino lambs inoculated with 85,000 T. colubriformis had increased plasma loss into the gut beginning 10–12 days after infection, coinciding with onset of inappetance, hypoproteinaemia and weight loss. Weight loss was considered largely due to reduced feed intake, but infected lambs during the period of protein effusion into the gut lost more weight, or gained less, than pair fed controls. Hypoproteinaemia was related mainly to effusion of plasma into the gut. One infected lamb, and its pair fed control, died, probably due to malnutrition. Slight anaemia, and depressed faecal dry matter per cent were observed in infected lambs.  相似文献

Salinomycin, administered prophylactically, was effective in controlling clinical sarcocystosis resulting from infection with Sarcocystis ovicanis in two experiments involving a total of 50 lambs. In each experiment, five lambs were used in each of five test groups--uninoculated and unmedicated, inoculated and unmedicated, uninoculated and medicated (2 mg/kg), inoculated and medicated (2 mg/kg), and inoculated and medicated (1 mg/kg). Salinomycin was included in the feed of each medicated group for 30 days beginning on the day of oral inoculation with 10(6) S. ovicanis sporocysts. Lambs were challenged with 10(6) sporocysts 9 wk PI and the experiment was terminated 7 wk later. Data from deaths, weight gains, body temperatures, packed cell volumes, hemoglobin values, serum protein levels, and postmortem and histological examinations indicated that salinomycin at both doses tested reduced the number of deaths and severity of signs of sarcocystosis in infected lambs as compared with unmedicated controls. Infected, medicated lambs developed a protective immunity as determined by challenge inoculation. An additional group of five lambs, each inoculated orally with 10(6) sporocysts, were treated therapeutically with 2 mg/kg per day beginning 21 days after inoculation. The activity of diamfenetide (N,N'-[oxybis(2,1-ethan diyloxy-4,1-phenylene)] bis acetamide) was studied in lambs experimentally inoculated with Fasciola hepatica. The drug was given orally at a dose level of 100 mg/kg either 1,3,5,7, or 9 weeks postinoculation. It was 100% effective 1, 3, and 5 weeks postinoculation, 73% effective 7 weeks postinoculation, and 57% effective 9 weeks postinoculation. Serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase activity remained normal in all lambs for 5 weeks after infection; it then began to increase in infected, untreated lambs at 6 weeks, and had increased 5- to 6-fold 9 weeks postinoculation in infected lambs. This enzyme activity was the most sensitive hematologic parameter used in this test to detect hepatobiliary damage by the parasite. The drug was well tolerated at the dose level used.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine whether reductive acetogenesis can provide an alternative to methanogenesis in the rumen. Gnotobiotic lambs were inoculated with a functional rumen microbiota lacking methanogens and reared to maturity on a fibrous diet. Lambs with a methanogen-free rumen grew well, and the feed intake and ruminal volatile fatty acid concentrations for lambs lacking ruminal methanogens were lower but not markedly dissimilar from those for conventional lambs reared on the same diet. A high population density (10(7) to 10(8) cells g(-1)) of ruminal acetogens slowly developed in methanogen-free lambs. Sulfate- and fumarate-reducing bacteria were present, but their population densities were highly variable. In methanogen-free lambs, the hydrogen capture from fermentation was low (28 to 46%) in comparison with that in lambs containing ruminal methanogens (>90%). Reductive acetogenesis was not a significant part of ruminal fermentation in conventional lambs but contributed 21 to 25% to the fermentation in methanogen-free meroxenic animals. Ruminal H(2) utilization was lower in lambs lacking ruminal methanogens, but when a methanogen-free lamb was inoculated with a methanogen, the ruminal H(2) utilization was similar to that in conventional lambs. H(2) utilization in lambs containing a normal ruminal microflora was age dependent and increased with the animal age. The animal age effect was less marked in lambs lacking ruminal methanogens. Addition of fumarate to rumen contents from methanogen-free lambs increased H(2) utilization. These findings provide the first evidence from animal studies that reductive acetogens can sustain a functional rumen and replace methanogens as a sink for H(2) in the rumen.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of milk replacer and rumen inert fat on growth, testicular development, puberty, semen production and sperm motion characteristics of ram lambs reared under intensive management in semi-arid climatic conditions. Seven-day-old male lambs of Malpura breed (n=20) were divided equally into two groups. Up to weaning, the lambs in G1 group (control) were fed concentrate, green khejri (Prosopis cineraria) leaves and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) hay along with suckling of dams, whereas lambs in G2 group were fed reconstituted milk at 17 g/lamb per day for the 1st week and at 34 g/lamb per day from 2nd week in addition to the feed inputs given in G1. During post weaning, lambs in the G1 group were given control concentrate, whereas in G2 the control concentrate supplemented with 40 g rumen inert fat per kg of feed was offered along with dry pala (Zizyphus nummularia) and ardu (Ailanthus excelsa) leaves. BWs of lambs were recorded weekly up to 6 months of age. Ram lambs of both the groups were trained for semen collection at a weekly interval from the age of 5 months and simultaneously testicular measurements were recorded fortnightly. The feeding of milk replacer and rumen inert fat had positive (P<0.05) effects on BW, testicular length, testicular volume, semen volume, sperm concentration, mass motility, % motility, % rapid, medium or slow motile spermatozoa. However, no significant effect was observed on testicular breadth, scrotal circumference, age of puberty, sperm velocities and other CASA-derived parameters. The results of this study indicate that higher plane of nutrition in the form of milk-replacer feeding during preweaning and rumen inert fat-supplemented feed during the postweaning period to growing ram lambs enhances their growth, testicular development and semen quality.  相似文献

Background

Main impact of Schmallenberg virus (SBV) on livestock consists in reproductive disorders, with teratogenic effects, abortions and stillbirths. SBV pathogenesis and viral placental crossing remain currently poorly understood. Therefore, we implemented an experimental infection of ewes, inoculated with SBV at 45 or 60 days of gestation (dg).

Methodology

“Mourerous” breed ewes were randomly separated in three groups: eight and nine ewes were subcutaneously inoculated with 1 ml of SBV infectious serum at 45 and 60 dg, respectively (G45 and G60). Six other ewes were inoculated subcutaneously with sterile phosphate buffer saline as control group. All SBV inoculated ewes showed RNAemia consistent with previously published studies, they seroconverted and no clinical sign was reported. Lambs were born at term via caesarian-section, and right after birth they were blood sampled and clinically examined. Then both lambs and ewes were euthanatized and necropsied.

Principal Findings/Significance

No lambs showed any malformation suggestive of SBV infection and none of them had RNAemia or anti-SBV antibodies prior to colostrum uptake. Positive SBV RNA detection in organs was rare in both G45 and G60 lambs (2/11 and 1/10, respectively). Nevertheless most of the lambs in G45 (9/11) and G60 (9/10) had at least one extraembryonic structure SBV positive by RTqPCR. The number of positive extraembryonic structures was significantly higher in G60 lambs. Time of inoculation (45 or 60 dg) had no impact on the placental colonization success rate but affected the frequency of detecting the virus in the offspring extraembryonic structures by the time of lambing. SBV readily colonized the placenta when ewes were infected at 45 or 60 dg but infection of the fetuses was limited and did not lead to congenital malformations.  相似文献

Seven lambs, separated from their dam 24 h after birth, were kept in a conventional environment until transferred to sterile isolators between 1 and 9 days of age: two on day 1 (IA and IB), two on day 4 (IVA and IVB), one on day 8 (VIIIA), and two on day 9 (IXA and IXB). The lambs were reared in these isolators until 120 days of age. Lambs IA, IB, IXA, and IXB were free of cellulolytic bacteria when they were placed in the isolators. They were then inoculated with Bacteroides succinogenes S85 which became established in the four lambs. Until the age of 2 months, the population of this strain fluctuated and then stabilized at a high level (10(8)-10(9) cells/mL). Cellulolytic bacteria were present in the rumen of lambs IVA, IVB, and VIIIA when they were transferred to the isolators. In IVA, and IVB, the cellulolytic population slowly increased with the animal age. In contrast, in VIIIA, the cellulolytic bacteria disappeared within a few days. Bacteroides succinogenes S85 inoculated thereafter became established rapidly and reached a level comparable to that observed in lambs IA and IB. The total number of viable rumen bacteria in the isolated lambs was similar to that observed in conventionally raised animals, but differences were observed in the selective enumeration of bacteria utilizing specific energy sources.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy was used to determine the time of initial colonization of the rumen epithelium of young lambs and successive changes with time in the morphological composition of the epimural community. Tissue samples were obtained from two groups of lambs at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks of age. Comparisons were made with the epimural communities observed at 12 well-distributed sites in the rumen of a mature wether. Epimural bacteria were already present on the epithelium at 1 week of age. The morphological composition of the epimural community changed with age, with the pattern of succession being similar in both groups of lambs. A total of 24 morphotypes were distinguished by scanning electron microscopy; 17 were rod shaped, 4 were cocci, 2 were spiral, and 1 was filamentous. These morphotypes were further subdivided into: (i) those persisting after their initial colonization in young lambs and present in the adult (7 morphotypes), (ii) those seen only in the adult (2 morphotypes), and (iii) those present only in young lambs (15 morphotypes). The seven morphotypes present in both the lamb and the adult could be considered indigenous members of the epimural community. Several morphotypes appeared restricted in their colonization to certain regions of the papillae, suggesting the presence of microhabitats within the epithelial habitat. Two rod-shaped bacteria were repeatedly seen specifically attached to one another, suggesting an interspecific association.  相似文献

Transfer of odour between lambs less than 1 week old was attempted by the use of rectangular coats of hessian (a jute textile) worn for 24 h by a ewe's own lamb and then transferred to a potential foster lamb. In the absence of their own lamb, 50–60% of ewes accepted the foster lamb immediately and more than 90% accepted the foster after confinement together over the next 2 days. Without exchange of coats, 12% of ewes accepted alien lambs immediately, and 50% after confinement.Breed differences in the success of fostering were observed, and a higher proportion of primiparas than multiparas accepted foster lambs. Foster lambs of similar appearance to the ewe's own lamb were more readily accepted than lambs of different appearance, and lambs 1–2 days old were more readily accepted than older lambs. There was a low level of success with fostering several weeks after lambing. Ewes that had accepted a foster lamb and then had their own lamb returned within 24 h of fostering initially tended to favour their own lamb.The success of the fostering method used in these studies appears to depend on both transfer and masking of lamb odour. The method should prove useful as an experimental tool, and as a practical means of saving lambs.  相似文献
