During human locomotion lower extremity muscle-tendon units undergo cyclic length changes that were previously assumed to be representative of muscle fascicle length changes. Measurements in cats and humans have since revealed that muscle fascicle length changes can be uncoupled from those of the muscle-tendon unit. Ultrasonography is frequently used to estimate fascicle length changes during human locomotion. Fascicle length analysis requires time consuming manual methods that are prone to human error and experimenter bias. To bypass these limitations, we have developed an automatic fascicle tracking method based on the Lucas-Kanade optical flow algorithm with an affine optic flow extension. The aims of this study were to compare gastrocnemius fascicle length changes during locomotion using the automated and manual approaches and to determine the repeatability of the automated approach. Ultrasound was used to examine gastrocnemius fascicle lengths in eight participants walking at 4, 5, 6, and 7 km/h and jogging at 7 km/h on a treadmill. Ground reaction forces and three dimensional kinematics were recorded simultaneously. The level of agreement between methods and the repeatability of the automated method were quantified using the coefficient of multiple correlation (CMC). Regardless of speed, the level of agreement between methods was high, with overall CMC values of 0.90 ± 0.09 (95% CI: 0.86-0.95). Repeatability of the algorithm was also high, with an overall CMC of 0.88 ± 0.08 (95% CI: 0.79-0.96). The automated fascicle tracking method presented here is a robust, reliable, and time-efficient alternative to the manual analysis of muscle fascicle length during gait.  相似文献

The functional role of biarticular muscles was investigated based on direct force measurement in the cat medial gastrocnemius (MG) and analysis of hindlimb kinematics and kinetics for the stance phase of level, uphill, and downhill walking. Four primary functional roles of biarticular muscles have been proposed in the past. These functional roles have typically been discussed independently of each other, and biarticular muscles have rarely been assigned more than one functional roles for different phases of the work cycle. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the functional role of the biarticular cat MG during locomotion. It was found that MG forces were primarily associated with the moment requirements at the ankle for most of the stance phase, but also helped to satisfy the moments at the knee in the initial phase of stance. In the second half of stance, MG transferred mechanical energy from the knee to the ankle from the knee to the ankle, while simultaneously producing a substantial amount of mechanical work. Based on these results, we hypothesize that MG's primary function is that of an ankle extensor. However, because of the coupling of the ankle extensor moment with a knee flexor moment in the initial, and a knee extensor moment in the final phase of stance, MG satisfies two joint moments in early stance, and transfers mechanical energy from the knee to the ankle in late stance. We conclude that cat MG has multiple functional roles during the stance phase of locomotion, and speculate that such multi-functionality also exists in other bi- and multi-articular muscles.  相似文献

Investigations of trunk muscle activation during gait are rare in the literature. As yet, the small body of literature on trunk muscle activation during gait does not include any systematic study on the influence of walking speed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze trunk muscle activation patterns at different walking speeds. Fifteen healthy men were investigated during walking on a treadmill at speeds of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 km/h. Five trunk muscles were investigated using surface EMG (SEMG). Data were time normalized according to stride time and grand averaged SEMG curves were calculated. From these data stride characteristics were extracted: mean SEMG amplitude, minimum SEMG level and the variation coefficient (VC) over the stride period. With increasing walking speed, muscle activation patterns remained similar in terms of phase dependent activation during stride, but mean amplitudes increased generally. Phasic activation, indicated by VC, increased also, but remained almost unchanged for the back muscles (lumbar multifidus and erector spinae) between 4 and 6 km/h. During stride, minimum amplitude reached a minimum at 4 km/h for the back muscles, but for internal oblique muscle it decreased continuously from 2 to 6 km/h. Cumulative sidewise activation of all investigated muscles reached maximum amplitudes during the contralateral heel strike and propulsion phases. The observed changes argue for a speed dependent modulation of activation of trunk muscles within the investigated range of walking speeds prior to strictly maintaining certain activation characteristics for all walking speeds.  相似文献

Bees were trained to react to differences both in the size and in the degree of greyness of discs. To measure the differential sensitivity on these parameters, differences in size and shade of grey (-intervals) were established such as lead to a specific choice reaction (Fig. 3). The -intervals may be described for both parameters by Weber's rule (Fig. 4). The main result is the following relationship between the differential sensitivity and the equivalence curve as defined by cross modality matching. The bee treats two discs, which differ from a reference disc in diameter or in degree of greyness, as equivalent when both differ from the reference disc by an equal number of -intervals (Fig. 6). The choice reactions between the reference disc and the discs of the equivalent pair are the same for these parameters. This does not hold for another parameter (Fig. 7A and B). Problems of infering from the -intervals to the differential sensitivity are then discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the behavior of the muscle tendon unit (MTU) of the medial gastrocnemius muscle during cyclic ankle bending exercise at eight different frequencies (ranging from 1.33 to 3.67 Hz). The changes in the length of fascicle in the muscle during the exercises were determined by real-time ultrasound imaging. The coordinates of anatomical references and the ground reaction force were determined from video recording and a force plate, respectively. The length change of the MTU (the distance from the origin to insertion of the muscle) was calculated from changes in the knee and ankle joint angles. It was found that the amplitude ratio and phase difference between the fascicle and MTU lengths were both dependent on the movement frequency. At lower frequencies, the fascicle lengths varied almost in phase with the MTU length, whereas they varied out of phase at the higher frequencies. At intermediate frequency, the amplitude of the fascicle became very small compared with that of the MTU, which is considered resonance. We constructed a mechanical model of the MTU based on a notion of forced oscillation in a mass-spring system. The obtained data were well explained by the model. It was concluded that the behavior of the MTU highly depends on the movement frequency due to the viscoelasticity of the MTU.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the combined effects of muscle history, activation and stretching velocity on short latency stretch response (SLR). Stretches (70, 120 and 200 deg s-1) were elicited to both passive and active (10-25% MVC) triceps surae muscle with constant (ISO), lengthened (LEN) or shortened (SHO) muscle length. Under the passive SHO pre-condition both SLR amplitude and reflex torque (RT) decreased where as latency increased compared with the passive ISO pre-condition. Such observations were absent in active trials. Stretches applied to a lengthening passive muscle (LEN) resulted in smaller SLR amplitude and RT compared with passive ISO. In active muscle the stretch response increased with stretching velocity in ISO and SHO. However, in LEN there was large interindividual variability and no velocity dependent increase in SLR amplitude was observed. Smaller amplitude and longer latency of passive SLR in SHO could result from increased slack in the intrafusal fibres, which may be compensated by fusimotor activation during the active condition. The mechanism behind the smaller amplitude in passive LEN and the lack of velocity dependence in active LEN may be related to changes in motoneuron pool excitability or changes in the spindle sensitivity to stretch.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test whether the spinal reflex excitability of the soleus muscle is modulated as posture changes from a supine to a passive upright position. Eight healthy subjects (29.6 ± 5.4 yrs) participated in this study. Stretch and H-reflex responses were elicited while the subjects maintained passive standing (ST) and supine (SP) postures. The passive standing posture was accomplished by using a gait orthosis to which a custom-made device was mounted to elicit stretch reflex in the soleus muscle. This orthosis makes it possible to elicit stretch and H-reflexes without background muscle activity in the soleus muscle. The results revealed that the H-reflex amplitude in the ST was smaller than that in the SP condition, which is in good agreement with previous reports. On the other hand, the stretch reflex was significantly larger in the ST than in the SP condition. Since the experimental conditions of both the stretch and H-reflex measurements were exactly the same, the results were attributed to differences in the underlying neural mechanisms of the two reflex systems: different sensitivity of the presynaptic inhibition onto the spinal motoneuron pool and/or a change in the muscle spindle sensitivity.  相似文献

Three groups of male subjects, average fitness (AF, N = 12), high fitness (HF, N = 7) and highly fit competitive race walkers (CRW, N = 3) performed maximal treadmill tests walking at 3.5 and 4.5 mph and running at 4.5, 5.5, 7.0, and 8.5 mph. In addition, the HF group performed a running test at 10.0 mph and the CRW group performed a walking test at 5.5 mph. All maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) tests with the exception of the 3.5 mph walking test (modified Balke test) were discontinuous in nature. VO2 max obtained from walking tests was similar regardless of speed within each group. Walking VO2 max was significantly lower than running VO2 max which was found to be similar over a speed range of 4.5 to 8.5 mph in the AF group. Running at 4.5 mph (HF group) and 4.5 and 5.5 mph (CRW group) resulted in lower VO2 max levels than running at speeds greater than or equal to 7.0 mph. Associated physiological variables (heart rate, ventilation, and respiratory exchange ratio) did not demonstrate a discernable pattern with reference to mode of locomotion (walking versus running) or speed. It was concluded that VO2 max elicited during walking is independent of speed and less than VO2 max obtained during running. Running VO2 max was interrelated with speed of running and state of training.  相似文献

Five subjects contracted forearm supinator muscles which were stretched after development of maximal isometric torque. The ratio of torque at the end of stretch over isometric torque at that position was calculated as excess torque. Excess torque increased with stretch velocity and decreased with stretch amplitude, and it was not dependent upon final muscle length. The rate of decay of torque following stretch could not be shown to depend upon stretch variables. The absence of significant changes in myoelectric activity suggested that with high initial forces, reflex activity did not account for the observed changes. Time-constants of decay (0.15 s to 1.8 s) were much greater than time-constants of rise (approx. 0.07 s) of isometric torque at the same muscle length. This indicates that interaction of series elastic and contractile elements is not the sole cause of prolonged torque following stretch. It is concluded that stretch temporarily enhances the intrinsic contractile properties of a group of human muscles in a manner similar to, but quantitatively different from that seen in isolated muscle preparations.  相似文献

The current investigation examined the effect of various types of background muscle contractions on the short-latency stretch reflex (SLR) elicited from the soleus muscle while subjects were in a sitting position. A stretch was applied to the calf muscles while they performed an isometric (pre-ISO), shortening (pre-SHO) and lengthening contraction (pre-LEN) with several pre-contraction levels. The ankle was at a 90 degrees tibio-tarsal joint angle when the perturbation was applied. Subjects developed and maintained a given pre-load level, which was maintained at various percentages of the maximum voluntary isometric plantar flexion torque. This was performed at 80 degrees in pre-SHO, 90 degrees in pre-ISO and 100 degrees in pre-LEN for about 2s before the contractions. The SLRs in trials with 0, 35 and 50% of the maximum voluntary contraction torque level were compared among the three conditions. The main results were as follows. (1) Pre-ISO and pre-SHO showed an equal SLR area and a different SLR waveform in the active muscle. (2) Pre-LEN showed the smallest SLR area of three conditions in the active muscle. (3) Pre-LEN showed shorter SLR latencies than the other conditions. (4) Pre-SHO showed a longer SLR latency in the relaxed muscle than in the active muscle. (5) The SLR area was larger in the active muscle than in the relaxed muscle. These findings demonstrate that the muscle contraction type and the pre-contraction level before a stretch perturbation have a considerable influence on the latency, the area and the waveform of the SLR. In particular, the equal area and the different waveforms of the SLR between pre-ISO and pre-SHO were a unique finding in the present study. They might result from differences in muscle spindle sensitivity and afferent input from various receptors induced by the present motor task.  相似文献

Animal experiments suggest that an increase in sympathetic outflow can depress muscle spindle sensitivity and thus modulate the stretch reflex response. The results are, however, controversial, and human studies have failed to demonstrate a direct influence of the sympathetic nervous system on the sensitivity of muscle spindles. We studied the effect of increased sympathetic outflow on the short-latency stretch reflex in the soleus muscle evoked by tapping the Achilles tendon. Nine subjects performed three maneuvers causing a sustained activation of sympathetic outflow to the leg: 3 min of static handgrip exercise at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction, followed by 3 min of posthandgrip ischemia, and finally during a 3-min mental arithmetic task. Electromyography was measured from the soleus muscle with bipolar surface electrodes during the Achilles tendon tapping, and beat-to-beat changes in heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure were monitored continuously. Mean arterial pressure was significantly elevated during all three maneuvers, whereas heart rate was significantly elevated during static handgrip exercise and mental arithmetic but not during posthandgrip ischemia. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the short-latency stretch reflex was significantly increased during mental arithmetic (P < 0.05), static handgrip exercise (P < 0.001), and posthandgrip ischemia (P < 0.005). When expressed in percent change from rest, the mean peak-to-peak amplitude increased by 111 (SD 100)% during mental arithmetic, by 160 (SD 103)% during static handgrip exercise, and by 90 (SD 67)% during posthandgrip ischemia. The study clearly indicates a facilitation of the short-latency stretch reflex during increased sympathetic outflow. We note that the enhanced stretch reflex responses observed in relaxed muscles in the absence of skeletomotor activity support the idea that the sympathetic nervous system can exert a direct influence on the human muscle spindles.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate active muscle stiffness with the stretch reflex according to changes (in 110-ms period after stretching) in torque and fascicle length during slower angular velocity (peak angular velocity of 100 deg·s−1) in comparison with active muscle stiffness without the stretch reflex (in 60-ms period after stretching) during slower and faster (peak angular velocity of 250 deg·s−1) angular velocities. Active muscle stiffness in the medial gastrocnemius muscle was calculated according to changes in estimated muscle force and fascicle length with slower and faster stretching during submaximal isometric contractions (10–90% maximal voluntary contractions). Active muscle stiffness significantly increased for both angular velocities and analyzed periods as torque levels exerted became higher. The effects of angular velocities and the interaction between angular velocities and torque levels were not significantly different between 250 deg·s−1 (in 60-ms period after stretching) and 100 deg·s−1 (in 110-ms period after stretching) conditions. The effects of the analyzed periods and the interaction between analyzed periods and torque levels were not significantly different between the analyzed periods (60-ms and 110-ms periods after stretching) for the 100 deg·s−1 condition. Furthermore, active muscle stiffness measured during the same angular velocity had significant correlations between those calculated in the different analyzed periods, whereas those under 250 deg·s−1 (60-ms period after stretching) did not correlate with those under 100 deg·s−1 (110-ms period after stretching). These results suggest that active muscle stiffness is not influenced by the stretch reflex.  相似文献

The role of calcium in the response of cardiac muscle to stretch   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
This review focuses on the complex interactions between two major regulators of cardiac function; Ca2+ and stretch. Initial consideration is given to the effect of stretch on myocardial contractility and details the rapid and slow increases in contractility. These are shown to be related to two diverse changes in Ca2+ handling (enhanced myofilament Ca2+ sensitivity and increased intracellular Ca2+ transient, respectively). Interaction between stretch and Ca2+ is also demonstrated with respect to the rhythm of cardiac contraction. Stretch has been shown to alter action potential configuration, generate stretch-activated arrhythmias, and increase the rate of beating of the sino-atrial node. A variety of Ca(2+)-dependent mechanisms including attenuation of Ca2+ extrusion via Na+/Ca2+ exchange, Ca2+ entry through stretch-activated channels (SACs) and mobilisation of intracellular Ca2+ stores have been proposed to account for the effect of stretch on rhythm. Finally, the interaction between stretch and Ca2+ in the secretion of natriuretic peptides and onset of hypertrophy is discussed. Evidence is presented that Ca2+ (entering through L-type Ca2+ channels or SACs, or released from sarcoplasmic reticular stores) influences secretion of both atrial and B-type natriuretic peptide; there is data to support both positive and negative modulation by Ca2+. Ca2+ also appears to be important in the pathway that leads to expression of precursors of hypertrophic protein synthesis. In conclusion, two of the major regulators of cardiac muscle function, Ca2+ and stretch, interact to produce effects on the heart; in general these effects appear to be additive.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that increasing the speed and inclination of the treadmill increases the peak Achilles tendon forces and their rates of rise and fall in force. Implantable force transducers (IFT) were inserted in the confluence of the medial and lateral heads of the left gastrocnemius tendon in 11 rabbits. IFT voltages were successfully recorded in 8 animals as the animals hopped on a treadmill at each of two speeds (0.1 and 0.3 mph) and inclinations (0 degrees and 12 degrees). Instrumented tendons were isolated shortly after sacrifice and calibrated. Contralateral unoperated tendons were failed in uniaxial tension to determine maximum or failure force, from which safety factor (ratio of maximum force to peak in vivo force) was calculated for each activity. Peak force and the rates of rise and fall in force significantly increased with increasing treadmill inclination (p<0.001). Safety factors averaged 30.8+/-7.5 for quiet standing, 7.0+/-2.9 for level hopping, and 5.2+/-0.7 for inclined hopping (mean+/-SEM). These in vivo force parameters will help tissue engineers better design functional tissue engineered constructs for rabbit Achilles tendon and other tendon repairs. Force patterns can also serve as input data for mechanical stimulation of tissue-engineered constructs in culture. Such approaches are expected to help accelerate tendon repair after injury.  相似文献

The distribution of blood flow within the isolated perfused dog gastrocnemius muscle (weight 100-240 g) was studied by intra-arterial injection of radioactively labeled microspheres (diameter 15 micron) at rest and during supramaximal stimulation to rhythmic isotonic tetanic contractions of varied frequency against varied loads. After the experiment the muscle was cut into 180-250 pieces of approximately 0.75 g each, and the blood flow to each muscle piece was determined from its radioactivity. The inhomogeneity of blood flow was represented as the frequency distribution of the ratios of regional specific blood flow, i.e., blood flow per unit tissue weight of the piece, QR, to the overall specific blood flow of the muscle, Q. The QR/Q values for the individual pieces of a muscle were found to vary widely both at rest and during stimulation. With rising work load the frequency distribution had a tendency to broaden and flatten, indicating increasing perfusion inhomogeneity. On the average of the experiments, there was no significant difference in specific blood flow between the three anatomic components of the gastrocnemius (lateral and medial heads of gastrocnemius and flexor digitorum superficialis) nor between the superficial and deep portions within these anatomic components, only the distal third of the muscle was relatively less perfused compared with the proximal two-thirds. The considerable inhomogeneity of blood flow as revealed by microsphere embolization and by other methods is expected to exert important limiting effects on local O2 supply, particularly during exercise. Its neglect would lead to serious errors in the analysis of O2 supply to muscle tissue.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects of aging on the stretch reflex in the ankle muscles, and in particular to compare the effects on the ankle dorsi-flexor (tibialis anterior: TA) and the plantar-flexor (soleus: SOL). Stretch reflex responses were elicited in the TA and SOL at rest and during weak voluntary contractions in 20 elderly and 23 young volunteers. The results indicated that, in the TA muscle, the elderly group had a remarkably larger long-latency reflex (LLR), whereas no aging effect was found in the short latency reflex (SLR). These results were very different from those in the SOL muscle, which showed significant aging effects in the SLR and medium latency reflex (MLR), but not in the LLR. Given the fact that the LLR of the TA stretch reflex includes the cortical pathway, it is probable that the effects of aging on the TA stretch reflex involve alterations not only at the spinal level but also at the cortical level. The present results indicate that the stretch reflexes of each of the ankle antagonistic muscles are affected differently by aging, which might have relevance to the neural properties of each muscle.  相似文献
