Self-sustaining classical biological control agents offer hope for permanent wide-area control of imported Solenopsis fire ants in the United States because escape from abundant natural enemies left behind in Argentina is a likely reason for unusually high fire ant densities in the United States. The fire ant decapitating fly Pseudacteon obtusus Borgmeier (Diptera: Phoridae) was released as a biocontrol agent of the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) in Gainesville, FL because it is a common parasitoid of this ant in Argentina and because it has a higher propensity of attacking fire ants along foraging trails than the two Pseudacteon species previously released. Field surveys of a rapidly expanding P. obtusus population (8–12 km/yr) proved that this fly was capable of thriving and successfully competing with the much more abundant Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier. However, Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier, the first decapitating fly released, was effectively excluded from most sample sites when faced with competition from both P. curvatus and the similar-sized P. obtusus. Despite clear evidence for competitive exclusion, P. tricuspis abundance at sample sites was positively correlated with the abundance of its two competitors—probably because of moderate to strong covariability in the suitability of sample sites for all three congeners. The addition of P. curvatus, the second parasitoid released, increased total parasitism pressure on fire ant populations by about 10-fold. The addition of P. obtusus, the third species, did not measurably improve total guild parasitism rates on imported fire ants in North Central Florida (as assessed by roadside trap counts), but the performance of this species will likely vary with habitat, region, and climate. 相似文献

Laboratory observations were conducted on four separate red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, colonies that contained workers parasitized by the decapitating fly, Pseudacteon tricuspis. Parasitized S. invicta workers remained inside the nest during parasitoid larval development and left the nest approximately 8 – 10 hours before
decapitation by the parasitoid. When parasitized ants left the nest, they were highly mobile, were responsive to tactile stimuli,
and showed minimal defensive behavior. Ants ultimately entered into a grass thatch layer, where they were decapitated and
the fly maggots pupariated. This study reveals that parasitized ants exhibit behaviors that are consistent with host manipulation
to benefit survival of the parasitoid.

The phorid fly, Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier, is a parasitoid of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. This fly has been reported to use fire ant chemicals, specifically venom alkaloids and possibly alarm pheromone to locate its host. A recent study identified 2-ethyl-3,6-dimethyl pyrazine as a component of the alarm pheromone of S. invicta. To determine the possible involvement of this fire ant alarm pheromone component in mediating fire ant-phorid fly interactions, we tested electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioral responses of P. tricuspis females to the commercially available mixture of 2-ethyl-3,6-dimethyl pyrazine and its 3,5-dimethyl isomer, as well as six structurally related alkylpyrazine analogs at varying doses. Pseudacteon tricuspis females showed significant EAG response to 2-ethyl-3,6(or 5)-dimethyl pyrazine (herein referred to as pheromone-isomer) at all doses, 0.001-10 μg. Among the tested alkylpyrazine analogs, 2,3-diethyl-5-methyl pyrazine showed significant EAG activity at 0.1 and 1 μg. 2,3-dimethyl pyrazine also showed significant EAG activity at 0.1 μg. Results of four-choice olfactometer bioassays demonstrated significant attraction of P. tricuspis females to the pheromone-isomer (2-ethyl-3,6(or 5)-dimethyl pyrazine) at all tested doses (0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 μg). The analogs, 2,3-diethyl-5-methyl pyrazine and 2,3-dimethyl pyrazine were significantly better than the control at the higher doses (0.1, 1 and 10 μg). The pheromone-isomer was significantly better than both analogs at two doses, 0.1 and 1 μg. These results confirm that the reported fire ant alarm pheromone component plays a role in mediating attraction of phorid flies to host workers. Venom alkaloids were previously shown to attract P. tricuspis; therefore, we propose that fire ant alarm pheromones may act in tandem or synergistically with venom alkaloids to attract phorid fly parasitoids to fire ant workers. 相似文献

The introduction and establishment of Pseudacteon obtusus Borgmeier (Diptera: Phoridae) into the United States is an important milestone in the effort to introduce a suite of parasitoids
and pathogens as prospective biocontrol agents of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).
P. obtusus is the fourth species of phorid fly to be established in the US and is now present in at least 11 sites in Texas. This species
has a greater propensity for attacking foraging worker ants, and to a lesser degree it will attend mound disturbance events.
The effectiveness of alternate field release strategies was evaluated across 28 sites in Texas, with establishment success
35 times more likely when no other phorid species were present at the outset of the releases. This result implies that competition
between phorid species may interfere with establishment. Therefore release strategies should be directed to locations lacking

Several species of parasitoid phorid flies (Pseudacteon spp., Diptera: Phoridae) have been released into the United States as potential biological control agents for the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Here we report the first successful introduction and spread of Pseudacteon nocens Borgmeier at a site in Texas, USA. Pseudacteon nocens is an important natural enemy since it is a widespread and often abundant parasitoid of S. invicta in Argentina, where it attacks larger fire ant workers eliciting a strong defensive response. Several years of effort to establish this species previously failed, and here we provide a model to better understand the likelihood of founding new populations when introducing sequential batches of flies in field or laboratory cultures. We also report on a novel method of establishing new populations of phorids in the field using pupae burial boxes to overcome constraints of releasing adult flies or infected worker ants. 相似文献

Decapitating phorid flies in the genus Pseudacteon are being studied as classical biological control agents of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier (Diptera: Phoridae) is a small decapitating fly that attacks small fire ant workers. We released a biotype of P. curvatus from Formosa, Argentina, at three sites near Gainesville, FL. Field releases were conducted in the spring and summer of 2003
and monitored monthly. Flies were discovered within 5 weeks at the spring site and then monthly thereafter. By late spring
2004, flies released at this site had expanded 1.6 km both north and south and about 0.8 km westward. Initially, we found
no flies from the two summer 2003 releases but we were successful at finding them 8 months after release during spring 2004.

Experiments were conducted to estimate the flight capabilities of fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) alates. These experiments were designed to: (1) quantify energetic expenditure during fixed flight; (2) characterize metabolic substrates of male and female alates; (3) estimate flight speed of male and female alates; and (4) quantify wingbeat frequency and water loss of females during flight. Flying males (in closed-system respirometry) increased metabolic rate approximately 38.4-fold over resting rate. Females increased metabolic rate approximately 51-fold (closed-system respirometry) and 48-fold (flow-through respirometry) over resting rate. Female alates had a mean respiratory quotient (RQ) of 0.999, indicating reliance on carbohydrates. The mean RQ of males was significantly lower (0.867). The flight speed of females on a circular flight mill averaged approximately 0.7 m s(-1), and increased with temperature but decreased with increasing body mass. The flight speed of males was 43% greater (approximately 1.0 m s(-1)) and increased linearly with temperature and increasing body mass. Female alates lost an average of 1.8 mg water h(-1) during flight. A simple energetics model, combined with previous work on the nutrient content of S. invicta and patterns of CO(2) release observed in this study, indicate that the flight capability of S. invicta female alates is limited to <5 km in the absence of wind. 相似文献

We studied how the behavior and performance of Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier varies with the social form of its host Solenopsis invicta Buren, in its native range in Argentina where monogyne colonies are more abundant than polygynes (approximately 75 vs. 25%). Female, P. tricuspis took 44% less time (50 vs. 89 s) to attack monogyne than polygyne ants, but oviposition attempts were similar (23 vs. 18 attacks). The presence of the parasitoid affected the average size of foragers on the trail, with the proportion of minor workers increasing on both social forms. In the laboratory, P. tricuspis selected similar host sizes, although pupal survival was 25% higher on monogynes than on polygynes. Developmental times of both genders were similar (33-35 d), although larger females emerged from bigger hosts. The sex ratio of P. tricuspis was more male biased when exploiting polygyne ants. Intraspecific competition significantly affected parasitoid reproductive success, being significantly higher for a solitary female than when three females were present, although the size of workers selected did not vary. The male:female ratio also changed, being 1:1 without competition but 2:1 with competition. We demonstrated for the first time the consequences of interference competition among P. tricuspis females, a common behavior observed in others parasitoids. We discuss why P. tricuspis sex ratios are always biased toward males in both social forms and suggest that similar studies of interference competition within and between already naturalized Pseudacteon species in the United States could help predict establishment patterns. 相似文献

Reproduction systems are controlling the creation of new genetic variants as well as how natural selection can operate on these variants. Therefore, they had historically been one of the main foci of evolutionary biology studies. The little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, has been found to display an extraordinary reproduction system, in which both males and female queens are produced clonally. So far, native sexual populations of W. auropunctata have not been identified. Our goals were to identify such sexual populations and investigate the origins of female parthenogenesis and male clonality. Using mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite markers in 17 native populations, we found that traditional sexual populations occurred in W. auropunctata and are likely the recent source of neighboring clonal populations. Queen parthenogenesis has probably evolved several times through mutational events. Male clonality is tightly linked to queen parthenogenesis and thus appears to be female controlled. Its origin could be accounted for by 2 mutually exclusive hypotheses: either by the expected coevolution of the 2 sexes (i.e., a variant of the maternal genome elimination hypothesis) or by a shared mechanistic origin (i.e., by the production of anucleate ovules by parthenogenetic queens). Our results also show that W. auropunctata males and females do not form separate evolutionary units and are unlikely to be engaged in an all-out battle of sexes. This work opens up new perspectives for studies on the adaptive significance and evolutionary stability of mixed sexual and clonal reproduction systems in living organisms. 相似文献

We examined flight activity patterns for a guild of fire ant parasitoids in western Argentina in relationship to their host's location (mound/foraging trail) and light condition (full sun/partial sun/full shade) at different scales, from the individually sampled mound to the full day's summation for each species. We asked first whether taxa showed preferences among these conditions, and second, whether certain species and sexes might be found together more frequently than expected to by chance. All species, except the P. obtusus species complex, were significantly more likely to be found attacking ants at disturbed mounds than at paired foraging trails. The P. nocens complex and P. litoralis were more likely to be in the shade when temperatures were above the overall mean of the study (28.3 degrees C), whereas others, such as the P. obtusus complex and P. tricuspis, were more likely to be in full sun under these same conditions. Our analyses indicated that a limited set of species, particularly P. nocens with P. litoralis, and males with female P. obtusus and P. tricuspis, were more likely to be found together than expected. We also found decreasing proportions of males with increasing time of analysis. We discuss the implications of host location, metereological conditions, and sex ratios in relationship to ongoing classical biological control efforts using species of these phorids. 相似文献

Several phorid fly species were introduced to the southern United States for biological control of the invasive imported fire ants, Solenopsis richteri (Black), Solenopsis invicta (Red), and their Hybrid S. richteri×S. invicta (Hybrid). It has been previously reported that the Jaguariuna biotype of Pseudacteon tricuspis and the Formosan biotype of Pseudacteon curvatus could distinguish among the three fire ant species with greater preference for Hybrid and Red fire ants. We hypothesized that phorid flies might use host derived chemical cues to differentiate ant species. To determine possible differential olfactory sensitivity of phorid fly species to different fire ant species, we compared electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioral responses of both sexes of P. tricuspis and P. curvatus to body extracts of Black, Red and Hybrid fire ants. As worker sizes of Black and Hybrid fire ants used in this study were much larger than that of Red fire ant (the average weight for Black, Red and Hybrid workers was 1.707, 0.863, 1.223mg per ants, respectively), at doses of 0.01, 0.1, 1 worker equivalent, body extracts of Black and Hybrid fire ant elicited significantly greater EAG response in both sexes of P. tricuspis than that of Red fire ant. Similarly, the EAG response in female P. curvatus to body extract of Black fire ant was significantly greater than to body extract of Red fire ant. To eliminate worker size influence on EAG response in phorid flies, we conducted a second EAG study using a dose of 1mg ant equivalent (body extract from 1mg of worker). No difference in EAG responses was recorded to body extract obtained from the same amount of workers among the three fire ant species (we consider viable Hybrid fire ant as a species in this paper), suggesting that worker size differences contributed to difference in EAG response in the first EAG study. In both EAG studies, male P. tricuspis showed significantly greater EAG responses than male P. curvatus to all three fire ant species. In four-way olfactometer bioassay, worker body extracts of all three fire ant species were equally attractive to P. tricuspis and P. curvatus (i.e. both phorid fly species did not show any preferences among the three fire ant species). Together, the results of the EAG and behavior studies suggest that parasitic phorid flies utilize host derived non-polar compounds from worker ants extracted out by hexane for host location but not for host preference, since both fly species are not able to distinguish among the body extracts of the three fire ant species. Future study will investigate possible involvement of polar compounds and/or non-chemical cues in mediating host preference by phorid flies. 相似文献

The von Bertalanffy rule (1960) predicts that low incubation temperature during larval development will result in larger adult body size. If larval development in social insects followed this rule, then low incubation temperature would induce the development of larger workers and possibly even sexuals. To test this prediction, the effect of incubation temperature on larval development, larval meal size, larval tending and worker recruitment to food in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta was investigated. Temperatures tested where within the range at which brood remains viable.Contrary to the predictions of the von Bertalanffy rule, worker size was unaffected by incubation temperature, and sexuals were reared at the high rather than the low incubation temperature. Moreover, larval meal size, the rate of larval tending by workers and the total number of workers recruited to food were unaffected by temperature.Mechanisms regulating developmental and behavioral homeostasis were as follows: the duration of larval development and the rate of larval growth changed proportionately with temperature such that the mean and variation of pupal size was unaffected by incubation temperature. Larvae solicited at the same rate, swallowed at the same rate and swallowed for the same duration such that meal size was unaffected by incubation temperature. On the brood pile, fewer workers tended brood at higher incubation temperatures, but worker tempo increased; as a result, brood tending was not adversely affected by incubation temperature. The rate of worker recruitment to food sites outside the nest increased with temperature, but the duration of the recruitment effort decreased such that, over time, the same total number of workers was employed to retrieve food.Incubation humidity was also investigated. When brood chambers were less than 100% humid, workers recruited to food and tended larvae (retrieved, sorted and groomed them), but did not feed larvae. 1. Solenopsis (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) fire ants are host to Pseudacteon (Diptera: Phoridae) parasitoids. The activity of S. geminata (F.) hosts and relative abundance of Pseudacteon phorids, along with five environmental variables, were measured at weekly intervals over an 8‐month period at two sites. 2. Pseudacteon relative abundances often varied greatly from week to week, and were only weakly positively correlated with S. geminata activity. 3. A quadratic function of soil temperature was the single best predictor of ant activity at both sites, explaining 32 and 73% of the variation in ant activity. A linear function of soil moisture was the single best predictor of phorid relative abundance at one site (r2 = 0.23) whereas no measured variables were significant predictors of phorid relative abundance at the other site. 4. Interspecific interactions at 600 baits were monitored at a third site to document dominance hierarchies and determine whether the presence of Pseudacteon phorids mediated interspecific interactions in their host, S. geminata. 5. Solenopsis geminata was near the top of dominance hierarchies, which did not diverge greatly from a linear pattern. Three species (S. geminata, S. invicta Buren, and Crematogaster laeviuscula Mayr) won the majority of their interspecific interactions and appear to be co‐dominants at this microhabitat‐rich site. 6. Overall, the presence of phorids had no significant effect on the outcome of interspecific contests involving S. geminata and all other ant species grouped together. Variation in host size preferences of four South American and two North American Pseudacteon species on monogyne and polygyne forms of their host Solenopsis species [ S. invicta Buren and S. geminata (F.), respectively] was documented.

The PBAN/pyrokinin peptides are a major neuropeptide family characterized by a common FXPRLamide at the C-termini. These peptides are distributed ubiquitously in the Insecta and are involved in many essential endocrine functions, e.g. pheromone production. We report the gene architecture of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta PBAN (Soi-PBAN) gene, including the exon and intron boundaries. Furthermore, we quantified expression of the Soi-PBAN mRNA in the head, thorax and abdomen of the fire ant. The Soi-PBAN gene is comprised three exons and two introns, all composed of 13,358 nucleotides, which is 2-4 times larger than lepidopteran PBAN genes. The overall pattern of the PBAN immunoreactive neuron number and localization was similar for female and male alates, inseminated female delates, workers and queens. The Soi-PBAN mRNA expression level was highest in the head, followed by the thorax, and abdomen of adult ants. Expression in the abdominal tissues was expected to be similar to the head, or at least higher than thorax because strong PBAN immunoreactive neurons were detected previously in brain-subesophageal and abdominal ganglia. This result suggests that another FXPRL gene could be dominant in the abdomen rather than Soi-PBAN gene. 相似文献
