Most existing studies of lacustrine ostracodes have been focused on species composition, and little attention has been paid to population structure. In this study, 39 surface-sediment samples from Hulun Lake, Inner Mongolia, were analyzed for ostracode species composition and 17 of them also for population structure of Limnocythere inopinata, which is the dominant ostracode in the lake. A total of nine ostracode species were recovered, most of which show high abundances at sites with rich plant detritus, implying the possible control of food supply on ostracode species occurrence in the lake. On the other hand, both the subfossil and the living populations of L. inopinata have greater numbers of early instars in deeper waters, while middle and late instars occur mostly in shallower waters, which is related to the grainsize composition of the substrate, denoting a hydraulic control on population structure. Pre- and post-mortem transport of ostracodes may be responsible for the observed within-lake changes in the population structure, although other factors such as migration, intrinsic population dynamics, and life cycle could also be involved. Our data provide insights into the interpretation of lake conditions when using ostracodes in paleolimnological research of lakes with similar natural settings.  相似文献

Ostracod shells in surface sediments from Ulungur Lake (Xinjiang, China) belong mainly to Limnocythere inopinata as the dominant species, and Candona neglecta and Darwinula stevensoni as accompanying, less abundant taxa. Shells of an additional nine species were recorded only sporadically. The three most abundant ostracods have wide tolerance ranges in terms of salinity, substrate and water depth. The similarly recorded bivalve Pisidium subtruncatum, and the gastropods Gyraulus chinensis and Radix auricularia belong to the most tolerant representatives of the genera. The bivalve and gastropods, in addition to the ostracod assemblage, reflect the fact that Ulungur Lake has experienced strong lake level and salinity variations due to water withdrawal in the catchment and the counteracting diversion of river waters to the lake in recent decades. The substrate in Ulungur Lake is typically fine-grained, apart from the delta region of the Ulungur River channel, which is marked by relatively coarse-grained detrital sediments barren of ostracod shells. This channel was created 40 years ago to divert water to Ulungur Lake and support its local fisheries and recreational facilities. A reassessed Holocene ostracod record from the lake shows that a significantly higher salinity and lower lake level existed in the early Holocene before 6.0 ka in response to the regional climate. In contrast, a higher lake level and lowest salinity is inferred for the late Holocene period between ca. 3.6 and 1.3 ka before present. Afterwards, the lake level declined and salinity increased in response to regional moisture reduction, although conditions similar to the early Holocene lake status were not re-established. Our surface-sediment-derived data provide a baseline for analysis of future environmental variations due to global climate change and regional water management.  相似文献

1. The life cycles and annual production of the eight most abundant species of chironomids (Prodadius cf. choreus, Tanypus punctipennis, Chironomus bernensis, Chironomus gr. plumosus, Cladopelma virescens, Microchironomus tencr, Tanytarsus gr. lestagei, and Cladotanytarsus atridorsum) were studied from sublittoral and profundal samples taken monthly in Lake Banyoles during 1987 at five sampling stations (depths ranging from 5 to 20 m). 2. The number of generations per year deduced from instar-frequency data varied from one to four, depending on the species, lake basin and depth. Annual temperature range, dissolved oxygen in the stratified period and presence of sulphide are the key factors that may explain the differences in the number of generations. 3. Production estimates were calculated using the size-frequency (SF) method corrected for the number of generations (SFG), and the increment-summation method (IS) when cohorts could be clearly deduced. 4. Production calculated with the SFG method gave results which were comparable with those of the IS method using smoothed-survivorship curves in the three species for which the use of the IS method was possible (C. virescens, M. tener and C. atridorsum). Using these methods production was estimated to range from 23–70 mg AFDW (ash-free dry weight) m?2 yr?1 at 12 m to 74–275 mg AFDW m?2 yr?1 in the sublittoral zone of the lake (5-m depth). 5. Calculation of production for the other five species using the size-frequency method with the number of generations (SFG) deduced from monthly instar-frequency data gave values ranging from 12 mg AFDW m?2 yr?1 (Chironomus bernensis at 20 m depth) to 3.75 g AFDW m?2 yr?1(Prodadius cf. choreus at 12 m). 6. Total chironomid production (with the SFG method) varied from 0.8 to 5 g AFDW m?2 yr?1 in the profundal and sublittoral, respectively. At each sampling station two species groups accounted for most of the production: Prodadius cf. choreus and Chironomus spp. Annual production/biomass ratio (P/B) varied from very high values for Prodadius (between 11 and 27, as four generations completed each year) to very low values for Chironomus gr. plumosus (2.20), which completed only one generation each year. The annual production of P. cf. choreus in Lake Banyoles is higher than any reported in the literature due to the completion of four generations and to the high densities of this species.  相似文献

Seventeen ostracod species were recorded from Lake Gölköy (Bolu, Turkey) between January 2000 and December 2001. Limnocythere inopinata is a new record for the Bolu region. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) explained 73% of the correlation between species and environmental variables, suggesting that the occurrence of many species is temporally variable, and is related to seasonal changes in physico-chemical conditions. The four most frequently occurring cosmopolitan ostracod species (Candona neglecta, Darwinula stevensoni, Physocypria kraepelini, and Cypridopsis vidua) accounted for more than 70% of the species recorded. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and redox potential were the most affective variables on the species occurrence. Two species (C. vidua, I. bradyi) were positively correlated to redox potential, while such a correlation was negative for P. kraepelini. The most frequently occurring species C. neglecta was most closely related to the changes in redox potential, whereas C. vidua and D. stevensoni showed a positive correlation to water temperature. Negative strong correlation (p<0.01) was found between pH and I. bradyi, but correlation was positive and weak for C. vidua. Some species (e.g. L. inopinata) showed no clear relationship with any of those environmental variables. UPGMA clustering of species based on their occurrence in different ecological conditions revealed three main species assemblages. Analysis of species phenology using the ‘Ostracod Watch Model’ showed that temporal patterns of occurrence could be similar among species with similar ecological preferences. The WWF Oasis of Palo, 38 kms north of Rome, is one of the last remnants of the Mediterranean plain forest formerly covering the coastal areas of Latium. Within this preserved area, nine temporary waterbodies were periodically visited during 2001 to obtain information on their morphology, water cycle and faunal composition. In total, 25 crustacean species were listed and monthly changes in their abundance were recorded. Cladoceran species prevailed in all waterbodies (11 species, 7 genera, 2 families). Copepoda were represented by 8 species, 7 genera, 2 families. Ostracoda included 5 species, 5 genera, 3 families. Anostracans were recorded in only two pools and were represented by Chirocephalus diaphanus Prévost, 1803, the most common species in Italy. Chirocephalus kerkyrensis Pesta, 1936 usually occurring in the waterbodies of the Mediterranean maquis, was missing. Species richness was maximal in late autumn and winter, and correlated positively with pond duration, flooded area, water level and number of rainpools. The species most frequently recorded were Chydorus sphaericus O.F. Müller, 1785 and Daphnia curvirostris Eylmann, 1887 for Cladocera, Megacyclops viridis Jurine, 1820, Diacyclops bicuspidatus odessanus Shmankevitch, 1875 and Mixodiaptomus kupelwieseri Brehm, 1907 for Copepoda, Cyclocypris ovum Jurine, 1820 and Eucypris virens Jurine, 1820 for Ostracoda. Others, like Alona affinis Leydig, 1860, Ceriodaphnia pulchella Sars, 1862 (Cladocera), Macrocyclops albidus Jurine, 1820 (Copepoda), Herpetocypris reptans Baird, 1835 Fabaeformiscandona fabaeformis Fischer, 1854 (Ostracoda) were found in only one pool.  相似文献

The first data on the ecology of rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) introduced to the Iberian peninsula are presented. The habitat and diet variation of rudd were studied in Lake Banyoles (Spain), an oligotrophic karstic lake dominated by exotic fish species. Rudd were strictly littoral and the diet was based on detritus and plant material. The most important animal prey were the cladocerans Daphnia longispinaand Scapholeberis rammneri, amphipods and several late stages of nematoceran dipterans. Rudd were more zooplanktivorous in spring and autumn and less in summer. There was also a size-dependent diet shift, from microcrustaceans to macroinvertebrates. The diet of rudd was also distinguished by the importance of plant material and various small neustonic invertebrates, particularly S. rammneriand late stages of nematocerans, showing a strong resource partitioning with other fish species. The degree of herbivory in Lake Banyoles was lower than usual.  相似文献

Spatial distribution of Gammarus lacustris in Lake Shira and growth of young specimens that feed on lake biota were studied. The amphipods have been shown to inhabit the littoral, sublittoral and the upper aphytal zones of the lake on stony-sandy soil and silted sand. The young and adult individuals stay apart. The young live in submerged or semi-submerged vegetation in the littoral, the adults in the sublittoral and upper aphytal zones. Maximum density of amphipods was encountered in the areas influenced by human activity.The feeding experiments revealed that the lake plankton is a more important food source for G. lacustris than any other food species. The specific growth rate measured was 0.039 d–1, with a length increment 0.095 mm d–1.  相似文献

New data are provided on the ostracode fauna of the Middle Neopleistocene to Holocene of the southeastern West Siberian Plain. Several species are recorded for the first time in the West Siberian Plain: Fabaeformiscandona aff. hyalina (Brady et Robertson), F. harmsworthi Scott, F. holzkampfi Hartwig, Pseudocandona insculpta Müller, Candona weltneri Hartwig, C. inaequivalvis Sars, and C. muelleri jacutica Pietrzeniuk. New evidence is presented on the distribution of the species Pseudocandona stagnalis Sars, Eucypris pigra (Fischer), Dolerocypris fasciata Fischer, Cyclocypris ovum Müller, and C. triangula Negadaev. New species, Candona kazminae sp. nov. and Ilyocypris pustulata sp. nov., are described. The study resulted in establishing the Late Karginian ostracode association.  相似文献

Although the area of Lake Yeniça?a is a potential candidate for RAMSAR convention, several anthropogenic factors compromise its biological diversity. This is mostly due to nutrient-rich water released from both point and nonpoint sources. Thirteen ostracod taxa (Candona neglecta, C. candida, Ilyocypris bradyi, Darwinula stevensoni, Cypridopsis vidua, Physocypria kraepelini, Cypria ophtalmica, Prionocypris zenkeri, Eucypris virens, Herpetocypris reptans, Pseudocandona compressa, Fabaeformiscandona fabaeformis Potamocypris cf. fulva) were found during this study. Potamocypris cf. fulva is a new record for the Turkish freshwater ostracod fauna. The first nine of these species have broad geographic ranges, implying high tolerance levels to different environmental variables. Based on the estimated species optima and tolerance levels, two species exhibited higher effective number of occurrences (C. neglecta, and D. stevensoni, respectively) than the other species. Three species (C. neglecta, D. stevensoni, I. bradyi) did not show significant correlation with any environmental variable we used. Both Canonical correspondence (CCA) and Pearson correlation analyses showed that temperature was the most effective predictor of species occurrence, followed by electrical conductivity and redox potential. In contrast, pH and dissolved oxygen of water were the least effective predictors. Approximately 71% of the correlation between community composition and environmental variables was explained by the first axis of the CCA diagram, which had a relatively low (7.7%) cumulative variance of species. The lower (560 μg/l) and the upper (2030 μg/l) levels of ammonia (NH3) exceeded the limits during winter season. The concentrations of total coliform and Escherichia coli bacteria were measured up to 10 × 107 cfu/ml and 10 × 103 cfu/ml, respectively. Results of physicochemical measurements, microbiological counts, and species data indicate that water quality of Lake Yeniça?a has been rapidly deteriorated by anthropogenic factors that are the main threat for not only the lake’s aquatic diversity but also human health around the lake.  相似文献

This modern distribution study from the southwest arm of Lake Malawi quantitatively relates variables of the lake environment to surficial assemblages of ostracodes and other paleoenvironmental indicators (molluscs, Botryococcus, fish, and charcoal) from 102 sites, across a gradient of littoral to shallow profundal conditions. The goal of this research is to use the resultant relationships to help quantify paleoecological interpretations of the fossil record from sediment cores. Site locations varied by depth (1–60 m) and adjacent shoreline environment. Thirty-three ostracode species are identified from 54 sites including four new, undescribed species of Cypridopsinae (2) and Limnocythere (2). Ostracodes are extremely abundant between 1 and 25 m water depth, but are rare to absent between 30 and 60 m. This disappearance is probably taphonomically controlled, with carbonate dissolution in the death assemblage since abundant live ostracodes have been found in the lake at greater than 30 m depth, where bottom sediments lack calcium carbonate. Constrained correspondence analysis (CCA) of ostracode species abundance suggests depth and dissolved oxygen (DO) content to be the primary environmental variables affecting their distribution. Additional CCA models using all biological indicators suggest limnologic variables correlated with depth (e.g., bottom water temperature and DO) and adjacent shoreline environment were most significant.  相似文献

High-resolution biostratigraphy has been established on the basis of fossil ostracodes from cores of the Cretaceous Continental Scientific Drilling borehole-Songke 1 (south) (SK1(s)) in the Songliao Basin, northeast China. More than 80 species belonging to 13 genera have been identified and 15 ostracode assemblage zones have been recognized. On the basis of ostracode paleoecological analysis, paleoenvironments, for example lake levels and salinity, have been reconstructed. Two inferred deep-water phases occurred during the deposition of the lower Qingshankou and lower Nenjiang formations, whereas shallower water phases probably occurred during deposition of the upper Quantou and uppermost Qingshankou to Yaojia formations. The salinity of paleo-Songliao lake is interpreted as predominantly freshwater to oligohaline. Oligohaline to mesohaline water environments may have occurred during the first and middle third members of the Qingshankou formation and the lower first and lower second members of the Nenjiang formation.  相似文献

Morphometric investigations on the populations of Megacyclops in Lake Constance showed, that in a sublittoral region from about 20 to 50 m depth an intermediate type between the two species M. viridis (littoral) and M. gigas (benthal) could be distinguished. Using enzyme electrophoresis it was evident, that these specimens belonged to M. viridis.The annual range of water temperatures in the sub-littoral region corresponds to that found in the shallow areas of the lake or in ponds during winter and early spring, when the adults of M. viridis are markedly larger than in summer and fall (seasonal variation). Nevertheless the sublittoral population represents a different local type with special characteristics in morphometric details.  相似文献

Life cycles and annual production of the chironomidCladopelma virescens are studied at two different depths in the sublittoral (5m) and the profundal (12m) zones of the karstic Lake Banyoles (NE Spain). Two generations were completed by this chironomid in the two sampling stations studied. Production was estimated with two different methods: increment-summation (IS) and size-frequency (SF). In the IS method the smoothed survivorship curves were estimated because of the absence of the smaller instars in the samples. The mean annual production varied from 44 to 70 mg m–2y–1 in the deeper station and from 215 to 270 mg m–2y–1 in the shallower, depending on whether the size-frequency or increment summation method was used. Annual P/B varied between 5.07 and 5.67, and 6.14 and 4.11 respectively. Due to the many assumptions to be made with the IS method, we suggest the SF method in this case, because the values given by the two methods are of the same order of magnitude.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of Canthocamptus staphylinus (Jurine) in Lake Ladoga was examined. C. staphylinus is one of the most numerous species of harpacticoids in the lake. It can dwell in almost all littoral biotopes. In profundal biotopes strongly exposed to anthropogenic influence (pollution and eutrophication) only this species of harpacticoid was found. A peculiarity of C. staphylinus biology is that in summer individuals are in the resting stage as cysts. In summer active individuals were found in littoral habitats at a water temperature of 20 °C, but their number was small in comparison with cold periods of the year. In the littoral zone the relative number of individuals in cysts was clearly related to water temperature. Twelve degrees temperature appears to be critical for development of littoral populations of C. staphylinus.  相似文献

Marine sediments from 12 shallow water stations in Raritan Bay, New York were tested for the presence of Acanthamoeba. Eight stations were positive for one or more species of Acanthamoeba, A. castellanii, A. comandoni, A. hatchetti, A. lenticulata, A. polyphaga, A. rhysodes, and Acanthamoeba spp. Isolates that grew at 38–40° C were found at four stations (A. comandoni, A. lenticulata, and two unidentified strains). The two unknown strains were characterized on the basis of morphological features, isoenzyme profiles, and mouse pathogenicity tests. One of the two strains was determined to be a new species and is designated herein as Acanthamoeba stevensoni n. sp., ATCC 50388. Mature cysts were most similar to those of morphological Group II of Pussard & Pons (1977). Acanthamoeba stevensoni n. sp. was isolated from inshore coastal sediments where seawater ranged from 20–30%‰ (ppt.). The sediments supported commercially valuable populations of hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria, that required depuration prior to sale because of contamination by sewage-associated bacteria.  相似文献

  • 1 The taxonomy, distribution and habitat preferences of Chironomus larvae from profundal benthos of reservoirs and natural lakes in Spain are presented. The 114 water bodies studied were medium to large reservoirs and lakes throughout Spain, and were visited on at least two occasions (summer and winter). Out of the natural lakes investigated, Chironomus larvae were found only in one karstic lake (Banyoles), and to date, these have not been found in the high mountain lakes of the Spanish Pyrenees or Sierra Nevada, or in Spain's largest oligotrophic lake (Sanabria).
  • 2 Multiple regression with environmental data from reservoirs showed that the density of Chironomus larvae was inversely correlated with water depth, temperature and sulphide content of the bottom water, but positively correlated with alkalinity and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) content of bottom water. Thus, the density of Chironomus larvae was higher in shallow reservoirs from the eastern part of Spain (calcareous water and higher PON), but markedly lower in southern reservoirs (higher temperature and higher sulphide).
  • 3 According to morphological and cytological characteristics, three species of this genus have been identified in the samples examined: C. bernensis, C. plumosus and C. nuditarsis. Reasons for the absence of other widespread European species are discussed.
  • 4 Using canonical correspondence analysis to relate species and environmental variables, C. bernensis showed a significant preference for reservoirs with higher oxygen concentrations in bottom water and lower total reactive phosphorus (TRP) content at the surface than those reservoirs where C. plumosus‐type were found. This suggests that the smaller C. bernensis prefers mesotrophic reservoirs and the larger C. plumosus‐type (C. plumosus + C. nuditarsis) prefers eutrophic reservoirs. Taking into account the TRP/depth index for those samples collected at depths below the thermocline, and thus, where oxygen can be a limiting factor, C. bernensis and C. nuditarsis were present in reservoirs in which the index was low (< 1:170 for C. bernensis and >1:800 for C. nuditarsis), while C. plumosus thrived in reservoirs with higher index values (<1:20). These differences may reflect the preference of C. bernensis and C. nuditarsis for detrital material, while C. plumosus prefers phytoplankton. These observations are in agreement with the depth distribution of each species: C. plumosus was restricted to reservoirs less than 46 m deep, whereas the other two species (i.e. C. bernensis and C. nuditarsis) were found up to depths of 65 and 80 m, respectively.
  • 5 Data from a transect (5–20 m deep) in Lake Banyoles are consistent with the general pattern described in reservoirs. In this lake, a high density of C. bernensis was recorded from littoral and sublittoral areas with abundant oxygen (above or close to the thermocline), whereas C. plumosus was scarce in several parts of the lake, especially in oxygen‐deficient areas during the summer. This karstic, oligotrophic lake has a low TRP/depth index, and therefore, we expected C. bernensis to be dominant in the littoral, as is the case. Nevertheless, the severe depletion of oxygen caused by meromixis, and the high hydrogen sulphide concentration benefit C. plumosus in deeper zones. Chironomus nuditarsis was scarce in Lake Banyoles and only found at considerable depths.

Rocky intertidal algae harbor a diverse invertebrate meiofauna of arthropods, nematodes and other invertebrates. Despite its ecological importance, relatively little is known about the diversity and composition of this important component of intertidal biodiversity. In this study, we quantified species composition, abundance and distribution of ostracodes, an important group of phytal meiofauna, at two different intertidal areas in southern California. In total, we recovered 22 ostracode species from three different orders (16 podocopids, five myodocopids and one platycopid), nearly a quarter of which could not be assigned to existing taxa. The abundance of ostracodes differed significantly among algal types, with structurally complex algae bearing many more ostracodes per gram of algae than simple forms (blade-like algae and the surfgrass Phyllospadix). Although most ostracode species were recovered from multiple kinds of algae, different algae harbored distinct assemblages that could be discriminated statistically on the basis of relative abundances of ostracode species. This segregation of the ostracode fauna according to algal species is evident even over very short spatial scales (<1 m). Finally, ostracode samples from turf-forming algae were more species rich than samples from other kinds of macroalgae. Since turf-forming algae are easily damaged by human trampling, this component of ostracode biodiversity may be particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts on the intertidal habitat. The aims of this study included: specifying values of ecological parameters and Ostracoda species characteristic for different types of plant habitats occurring in lake systems, determining the impact of mud presence on the taxonomic structure and density of the ostracods, tracing seasonal changes in the structures of Ostracoda assemblages identifying the species typical of particular seasons. Various types of rushes and underwater meadows were taken into consideration as lake microhabitats. The research was conducted in the shallow Lake Œwidwie (NW Poland). Multivariate (constrained) ordination methods were used to analyse the relationships between species composition and environmental variables. In the lake and its margins 31 species of the Ostracoda were identified. The development of water vegetation during the vegetation season was conducive to growth in ostracod density. The accessibility of mud in plant habitats had a favourable effect on the general density of ostracods. Species which preferred a high mud content in their habitats included: Cypria ophtalmica, C. exsculpta and Physocypria kraepelini. Species typically encountered in underwater meadow habitats were: Cyclocypris ovum and Cypridopsis vidua. Underwater meadows of charophyte were characterized by the highest ostracod density in the whole lake system, with the average of 7860 ind. m–2 and the maximum of 17 470 ind. m–2. Recent palaeontological and sedimentological studies on the Upper Pliocene–Lower Pleistocene continental deposits of the Rieti and Tiberino basins (Latium and Umbria, Italy) showed the existence of brackish marshes influenced by the Early Pleistocene Tyrrhenian sea. The micropaleontological analyses carried out on five sections cropping out in the northern sector of the Rieti Basin and on one section cropping out in the southwestern branch of the Tiberino Basin showed the repeated alternance of two ostracod assemblages. The first is characterized by a very abundant ostracod association dominated by Cyprideis torosa, typical of brackish waters; the second one is less rich in specimens and dominated by several species of freshwater Candoninae. This alternance allowed the recognition of several changes in the water salinity that could be related to many Early Pleistocene sea-level changes. Palaeosalinities were estimated for both the Tiberino and the Rieti Basin using the morphological analysis of the shell of Cyprideis torosa (ornamentation, nodosities and percentages of sieve-type pore canals). The obtained palaeosalinity values, ranging from freshwater to oligohaline, show slightly higher salinities for the Tiberino Basin, located nearer the ancient coastline, than for the Rieti Basin.  相似文献

A new ostracode species, Cribroconcha magna sp. nov., is described from the Serpukhovian cephalopod facies, Lower Carboniferous, of the Southern Urals.
