Gross morphology and the development of flowers in Schefflera subintegra (Araliaceae) are examined. The floral groundplan of this species is found to be very similar to that of Tupidanthus calyptratus representing a case of most extreme floral polymery within Araliaceae. Schefflera subintegra differs from T. calyptratus with respect to a lower floral merism (19–43 versus 60–172 stamens and 15–33 versus 60–138 carpels respectively) and by transformation from polysymmetry to disymmetry of flower in the course of its development. Close relationships between S. subintegra, T. calyptratus, and Schefflera hemiepiphytica have been confirmed by phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequences. These species form a subclade within the Asian Schefflera clade, with T. calyptratus as a sister taxon to two other species. Apart from more or less pronounced floral polymery, the species of this subclade share calyx and corolla without any traits of individual sepals and petals, and also a massive calyptra. As these data suggest, the extremely polymerous flowers of Tupidanthus apparently evolved in two steps: (1) the saltational multiplication of floral elements together with a loss of individuality of sepals in the calyx and petals in the corolla and (2) further polymerization of androecium and gynoecium. Mutation(s) in CLAVATA‐like gene(s) are suggested as a possible mechanism of the saltation event. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 175 , 553–597.  相似文献

Wood anatomy was examined in 16 species of Meryta (a genus of c . 35 species) and bark anatomy was studied in 12 species. All but two of these taxa form an assemblage corresponding to the Northern Arc clade, one of two major groups identified by a recent molecular phylogenetic study. M. sinclairii and M. tenuifolia (corresponding to the New Zealand/Fiji clade) differ distinctly by having more numerous simple perforation plates, multiseriate rays with few marginal rows, and the absence of sclerified cells in collapsed secondary phloem, a bark feature that has not yet been found elsewhere in Araliaceae. The increase in abundance of simple perforation plates in the wood of these two species is not accompanied by a decrease in the number of bars on scalariform perforation plates. The wood structure of Meryta bears a strong resemblance to members of the Pacific Schefflera clade, sharing similar ranges of variation of several features. Bark characters, such as the diameter of the cortical secretory canals, the types of crystal in cortical cells, the types of axial parenchyma cell in collapsed secondary phloem, and the presence of sheath cells by phloem rays, appear to be of diagnostic value for some species of Meryta .  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 363–379.  相似文献

Small diameter pyritized axes, commonly referred to as 'twigs', of fossil platanaceous wood are described from the Lower Eocene London Clay Formation of south-east England. These twigs are characterized by solitary vessels with scalariform perforation plates, opposite intervessel pits, and tall, multiseriate rays that dilate in the phloem region. The wood anatomy supports close relationship to members of extant Platanaceae and the material is placed in the organ genus Plataninium Unger erected for fossil woods with close anatomical similarity to Platanus L. This material supplements the fossil record of platanaceous type wood from the Eocene London Clay and documents the first record of Plataninium decipiens Brett in the twig flora.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 139 , 181–191.  相似文献

Our main goals were to identify diagnostic characters at the species, genus, and subfamily levels, find anatomical features with potential for future morphological and molecular (combined) phylogenetic analyses, and to reconstruct the evolution of wood anatomical characters in two subfamilies of Primulaceae in a molecular phylogenetic framework. We investigated twenty-seven species from the woody Myrsinoideae (4 genera) and Theophrastoideae (2 genera) using scanning electron, light, and epifluorescence microscopy. Samples were prepared using standard protocols. Based on the wood anatomical characters, we were able to identify synapomorphies and to detect evolutionary trends of interest for the genera and subfamilies. Both subfamilies share the presence of diffuse porosity, simple perforation plates, septate fibres, and scanty paratracheal axial parenchyma. Theophrastoideae species have rays?>?10 cells wide and short (<?350 µm) vessel elements, and Myrsinoideae have breakdown areas in rays and longer vessel elements. Ardisia and Stylogyne have scalariform intervessel pits, Myrsine exhibit breakdown areas in rays, and two Cybianthus species from subgenus Weilgetia have distinguishing features (e.g., scalariform perforation plate in C. nemoralis and the absence of rays in C. densiflorus). Overall, when combining characters, we were able to segregate the Neotropical Primulaceae subfamilies and genera from each other and from the subfamily Maesoideae based on wood anatomy.  相似文献

Perforation plates from ten species of seven genera of Hydrangeales sensu Thorne were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of pit membranes in perforations ranges from abundant, as in Carpenteria and Hydrangea, to minimal, as in Deutzia, Escallonia and Philadelphus. Abnormally great pit membrane presence may result from the presence of secondary compounds that inhibit lysis, as in Quintinia serrata; such interference with the natural lysis process may or may not be evident from coarseness and irregularity of pit membrane surface and of threads composing the pit membrane remnants. The presence of pit membrane remnants in perforation plates is hypothesized to be a symplesiomorphy, found in a fraction of dicotyledons with scalariform perforation plates (but still in an appreciable number of species). Pit membrane remnant presence may represent incomplete lysis of primary wall material (cellulose microfibrils) in species that occupy highly mesic habitats, where such impedance in the conductive stream does not have an appreciable negative selective value. This physiological interpretation of pit membrane remnants in perforations is enhanced by the phylogenetic distribution as well as the strongly mesic ecological preferences of species that exemplify this phenomenon in dicotyledons at large. Families with pit membrane presence in perforations are scattered throughout phylogenetic trees, but they occur most often in basal branches of major clades (superorders) or as basal branches of orders within the major clades. Further study will doubtless reveal other families and genera in which this phenomenon occurs, although it is readily detected only with SEM. Phylogenetic stages in the disappearance of pit membrane remnants from perforation plates are described, ranging from intact pit membranes except for presence of pores of various sizes, to presence of membrane remnants only at lateral ends of perforations and in one or two perforations (arguably pits) at the transition between a perforation plate and subadjacent lateral wall pitting. Developmental study of the mechanism and timing of lysis of pit membranes in perforations, and assessment of the role of the conductive stream in their removal, are needed to enhance present understanding of vessel evolution. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 146 , 41–51.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs of thick sections from liquid‐preserved stems of Victoria cruziana and Euryale ferox show accretions of coarse fibrils on pit membranes of tracheids. The first‐deposited fibrils are randomly orientated; on top of them (facing the tracheid lumina) are axially orientated coarse fibrils. The two systems are interconnected. Axially orientated fibrils were more extensively observed in Euryale than in Victoria and tips of fibrils in Euryale extend over the pit apertures onto secondary wall surfaces. Tracheid–parenchyma interfaces bear rudimentary coarse fibrils on the tracheid side. End walls of Victoria tracheids have highly porose pit membranes, thinner and less complex than those of the lateral intertracheid walls. The structures reported in Victoria and Euryale are consistent with those concurrently reported for stems of other Nymphaeaceae. Although also present in Cabombaceae, the coarse fibrils are otherwise not reported for stems of angiosperms and are not yet reported in roots of any species. Pit membrane remnants in perforation plates of various woody dicotyledons represent a nonhomologous phenomenon. The accretions of coarse fibrils in stem tracheids of Nymphaeaceae do not appear to enhance conduction, although they do contain porosities interconnecting tracheids. Removal of pit membrane remnants from perforation plates of primitive dicotyledon woods by hydrolysis does, on the contrary, suggest conduction enhancement. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 52–57.  相似文献

Abstract Cercidiphylloxylon spenceri (Brett) Pearson is described from the Lizigou Formation, Palaeocene in China. The growth rings are distinct; pores are diffuse, solitary, with somewhat angular outlines in cross section; vessel elements long with long scalariform perforation plates; intervessel pitting is opposite to scalariform; fiber‐tracheids are present; axial parenchyma is scarce; rays are mostly biseriate and heterogeneous. All wood characters of the fossil specimen fall into the range of those of extant Cercidiphyllum (Cercidiphyllaceae). The finding is one of the earliest fossil wood records of Cercidiphyllaceae.  相似文献

Revision of the Neotropical fern genus Danaea (Marattiaceae) has resulted in the recognition of ten new species, which are here for the first time presented to the scientific audience. Morphological and molecular data suggest that the genus consists of three monophyletic subgenera that are circumscribed here. A key is provided to aid species identification. The geographical ranges of the species are summarized and discussed with regard to speciation. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 163 , 360–385.  相似文献

Small diameter pyritized axes, commonly referred to as 'twigs', of fossil vitaceous and menispermaceous wood from the Lower Eocene, London Clay Formation of south-east England are described here for the first time. The vitaceous twigs, which represent the earliest known occurrence of fossil Vitaceae wood, are characterized by large diameter, solitary vessels, tall wide rays which dilate in the phloem region, scalariform intervessel pits and simple perforation plates. The wood anatomy supports a close relationship to the Vitaceae and in particular the genus Rhoicissus Planch. The menispermaceous twigs are characterized by medium to moderately large vessels, simple perforation plates, alternate intervascular pitting and very broad and high rays. The anatomical characters support a close relationship to the Menispermaceae and in particular the genera Tinomiscium Miers and Coscinium Colebr. However, as these fossil twigs are not exactly similar to any particular genus they have been placed in the organ genus, Vitacexoylon Wheeler and LaPasha and Menispermoxylon Vozenin-Serra, Privé-Gill & Ginsburg, with which, respectively, they have the greatest similarity. These specimens were studied using reflected light- and scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

The wood anatomy of all four woody genera of the tribe Heteromorpheae (Apiaceae, subfamily Apioideae) has been described and compared, based on 40 wood samples (representing nine species of Anginon, one species of Glia, three species of Heteromorpha and two species of Polemannia). The four genera were found to be relatively similar in their wood anatomy. Helical thickenings on the vessel walls occur in all species investigated and appear to represent an ancestral character state and a symplesiomorphy for the tribes Bupleurieae and Heteromorpheae. Each of four genera has a diagnostically different combination of character states relating to the diameter of vessels, size of intervessel pits, length of fibres, presence and arrangement of banded axial parenchyma, size of rays and ray cells, and presence of septate fibres and crystals in the ray cells. The occurrence of marginal axial parenchyma in Anginon and Glia may be an additional synapomorphy for these taxa. Variation in the wood anatomy of 31 samples from nine species of Anginon is not correlated with habitat (Fynbos or Succulent Karoo Biomes), but instead appears to reflect adaptations to seasonal aridity found in both ecosystems. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 569–583.  相似文献

Epidendrum is one of the largest Neotropical genera of Orchidaceae and comprises approximately 1500 species. Only 2.8% of these species have been studied cytologically, demonstrating chromosome numbers ranging from n = 12 in E. fulgens to n = 120 in E. cinnabarinum. The present work evaluated the evolution of the karyotypes of Epidendrum spp. based on data gathered from the literature and from analyses of the karyotypes of 16 Brazilian species (nine previously unpublished). The appearance of one karyotype with n = 12 with one larger chromosome pair in subgenus Amphiglottium appears to have occurred at the beginning of the divergence of this lineage, and x = 12 probably represents the basic number of this subgenus. Epidendrum secundum exhibits wide variation in chromosome numbers, with ten different cytotypes found in 22 Brazilian populations, seven of which were new counts: 2n = 30, 42, 50, 54, 56, 58 and 84. Most lineages of Epidendrum seem to have been secondarily derived from one ancestral stock with x = 20, as is seen in the majority of the present‐day representatives of the genus. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 172 , 329–344.  相似文献

Analysis of 88 characters of external and internal body systems yielded a phylogenetic reconstruction of the Neotropical electric knifefish genus Sternarchorhynchus (Apteronotidae; Gymnotiformes). The results support a hypothesis of Sternarchorhynchus as the sister group to Platyurosternarchus. A series of synapomorphies, many involving major innovations of the neurocranium, jaws, suspensorium, and associated systems that permit an unusual mode of grasp‐suction feeding, support the monophyly of both genera. Synapomorphies largely resolve relationships within Sternarchorhynchus with basal nodes strongly supported by characters pertinent to prey capture and initial processing of food items. These possible key innovations may provide Sternarchorhynchus with a competitive advantage over other clades of the Apteronotidae and account for the species diversity of the genus in Neotropical rivers. Adaptive radiation in Sternarchorhynchus was analysed. Habitat preference transitions repeatedly occurred in the genus between deep‐river channel dwelling species and rheophilic species with preferences for higher energy setting including rapids and swift‐flowing fluviatile settings. Twenty‐two species of Sternarchorhynchus are described as new based on samples that originated in the smaller rivers draining into the Golfo de Paria, the Marowijne and Essequibo River basins, the Río Orinoco and in particular the Amazon River basin. The 32 species in Sternarchorhynchus make it the most speciose genus in the Apteronotidae. No claim to original US government works. Studies on niche evolution allow us to establish how species niches have changed over time and to identify how long‐term evolutionary processes have led to present‐day species distributions. Here, we investigate the patterns of climatic niche evolution in Tynanthus (Bignonieae, Bignoniaceae), a genus of narrowly distributed species. We test the hypothesis that niche conservatism has played an important role in the history of this group of Neotropical lianas. We perform univariate and multivariate comparisons between climatic niches of species and associated environmental data with information on phylogenetic relationships. We encountered considerable divergence in niches among species, indicating that niche conservatism in climatic variables does not seem to have played a key role in the history of the genus. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 179 , 95–109.  相似文献

The distribution of scalariform and simple perforation plates along vessels in Arthrophyllum otopyrenum, Meryta tenuifolia, and Polyscias multijuga (Araliaceae) is examined. In all three species, most vessels bear simple perforation plates only, but the combination of simple and scalariform perforation plates in variable ratios also occurs. Aggregated arrangement of scalariform perforation plates along the vessels was statistically confirmed in some vessel portions. The scalariform perforation plates occur mostly in narrow vessels that are grouped in multiples. Within the clade represented by Polyscias and Arthrophyllum, the evolutionary transition from scalariform to simple perforation plates is realized as the gradual elimination of vessels or vessel portions with scalariform perforation plates, but is not accompanied by a gradual decrease of the number of bars per perforation plate. The narrow vessels that are grouped in vessel multiples are likely to retain the ability to develop scalariform plates, which could promote the evolution from simple to scalariform perforation plates as is the case within Meryta.  相似文献

We present phylogenetic relationships and phylogeographic patterns of the two species of bulldog bats, genus Noctilio. Using a comprehensive sampling of 118 individuals throughout the species distribution, we investigated the distribution of molecular variation in one nuclear and two mitochondrial markers. Phylogenetic trees do not recover Noctilio albiventris as a monophyletic group and point to three similar‐age intraspecific genetic lineages, suggesting cryptic diversity in this taxon. These lineages correspond to the subspecies previously proposed, and are strongly associated with major river basins in South America. Analyses also suggest a very recent origin for the fishing bat Noctilio leporinus, which probably originates from N. albiventris, with a population expansion corresponding to its invasion in South America. Based on our analysis, the speciation event was dated in the Pleistocene epoch and seems to be associated with the variation of the sea level in the Caribbean islands. The present work indicates how phylogeographic studies support the identification of independent evolutionary lineages, driving new systematic/taxonomic investigations, while at the same time shed light on the role of the Caribbean in shaping Neotropical bat fauna diversity. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

Non‐invasive genetic analysis has been frequently employed to estimate ecological and population parameters for many secretive and/or threatened species. However, Neotropical carnivores have so far been scarcely targeted by such studies. The Neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis) is a poorly‐known species for which local levels of genetic diversity and demographic parameters are virtually absent. We employed non‐invasive sampling and amplification of microsatellite loci to investigate population size and density, spatial organization, and relatedness of a wild Neotropical otter population in an Atlantic forest area in southern Brazil. We directly identified 28 individuals and estimate a rather high population density at the study site. Spatial organization analysis indicated that male cumulative displacement was higher than that of females, with the latter sex showing evidence of philopatric behaviour. Also, the reconstruction of genealogical relationships suggests that spatial organization in this otter appears to be influenced by relatedness. By allowing the testing of specific hypothesis targeting these issues, our results provided important glimpses into the Neotropical otter's population biology. Moreover, the findings of the present study reaffirm the power of non‐invasive genetics to investigate the biology of this elusive species, and open up new avenues for ecological and demographic studies of other Neotropical carnivores. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109 , 932–948.  相似文献
