1. To evaluate the effect of habitat patch heterogeneity on abundance and growth of macroinvertebrates in arctic lakes, macroinvertebrate abundance, individual biomass, and potential food resources were studied in three patch types in two arctic lakes on the Alaskan North Slope near the Toolik Lake Field Station. An experiment was conducted to determine which sediment patch type supported higher growth rates for Chironomus sp., a commonly occurring macroinvertebrate. 2. Potential organic matter (OM) resources were significantly higher in both rock and macrophyte patches than in open‐mud patches. Total macroinvertebrate densities in both lakes were highest in rock patches, intermediate in macrophytes and lowest in open‐mud. The open‐mud patches also had lower species richness compared with other patch types. Additionally, individual biomass for one clam species and two chironomid species was significantly greater in rock patches than in open‐mud. 3. In a laboratory experiment, Chironomus showed two to three times greater mass increase in sediments from macrophyte and rock patches than from open‐mud patches. Rock and macrophyte experimental sediments had at least 1.5 × the percentage OM as open‐mud sediments. 4. Chlorophyll a appeared to be the best predictor for invertebrate abundances across all patch types measured, whereas OM content appeared to be the variable most closely associated with Chironomus growth. 5. Our results combined with previous studies show that the relationships between macroinvertebrate community structure, individual growth, and habitat heterogeneity are complex, reflecting the interaction of multiple resources, and biotic interactions, such as the presence or absence of a selective vertebrate predator (lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush).  相似文献

Different types of litter patches with contrasting macroinvertebrate assemblages have been observed within a stream reach. This study examined whether distributions of macroinvertebrates among three litter patch types (riffle, middle, edge) were consistent between reaches with different channel characteristics in headwater streams in central Japan. Mass of leaves per unit area was significantly higher in riffle and edge patches than in middle patches, which was consistent between reaches, while no consistent pattern was evident between reaches for mass of either woody material or small litter fragments. Distribution among the patch types was consistent between reaches for 11 out of 13 dominant macroinvertebrate taxa; density was highest in riffle patches for 5 taxa and in middle patches for 5 taxa. Although we previously related densities of some taxa to mass of woody material or small litter fragments, hydraulic characteristics (water depth, current velocity), which were consistent between reaches, may be more important determinants of macroinvertebrate distributions among the patch types, even within pools (i.e. middle and edge patches) where current is uniformly low. The results of this study indicate that a reach-scale macroinvertebrate community structure associated with litter is likely to vary according to litter patch type composition, which would be affected by channel characteristics of the reaches.  相似文献

  • 1 Plant patch shape may affect the abundance of herbivorous insects. Patches of the same size but longer or irregular have a higher perimeter/area relationship (P/A) than square or regular ones, which may determine the immigration, emigration and abundance of individuals in the patch.
  • 2 Only specialist species should be affected by plant patch shape. Those species that are more abundant in smaller patches should be more abundant in patches with higher P/A, whereas those that are more abundant in larger patches should be more abundant in patches with lower P/A.
  • 3 We studied the density of eggs, larvae and pupae of Pieris brassicae, Plutella xylostella and Trichoplusia ni in square (low P/A) and I‐shaped (high P/A) patches of 144 plants of Brassica oleracea. We also estimated their immigration to these patches, and the final plant weight.
  • 4 Plant patch shape affected the abundance, but not the distribution, of the two specialist species. Whereas P. brassicae was denser in I‐shaped patches, P. xylostella was more abundant in square patches. The generalist T. ni was not affected by patch shape. Immigration of P. brassicae was higher in I‐shaped patches, but immigration of P. xylostella and T. ni was not affected by patch shape. Plants were heavier in the centre of square patches.
  • 5 Our results suggest that plant patch shape affects the density of herbivorous insects and should be considered independently from other plant patch variables when studying the population dynamics of these organisms.

  • 1 It has been suggested that submerged aquatic plants can influence the periphyton which grows on their surfaces, making it nutritionally beneficial to snails. In return, preferential feeding by snails clears the plants from a potential competitor, with both plants and grazers gaining from this mutualistic relationship.
  • 2 A highly replicated experiment was conducted, in which the nature of the plant (isoetid and elodeid types compared with similar shaped inert substrata), the nutrient availability (10–200 µg L‐1 P, 0.2–4 mg L‐1 N) and the influence of periphyton grazers, Physa fontinalis, were controlled. The plants were cleaned of periphyton before use and an algal inoculum added to all treatments. At the end of the growth period, quantitative measures of the periphyton community composition were made and related to the treatments using both ordination and analysis of variance.
  • 3 Grazing had the largest influence on community composition and algal numbers. A community of unicellular and adpressed filamentous forms developed in the presence of snails, and of erect filamentous forms in their absence. Three algal species, Cocconeis placentula, Chamaesiphon incrustans and Aphanochaete repens, increased in real numbers in the presence of snails, probably as a result of reduced competition whilst being able to withstand grazing.
  • 4 The second largest effect was the influence of host plant. However, differences between the two artificial plants were as great as between the real plants and their artificial counterparts, indicating that physical structure was as important as any active contribution by the plants. Nutrients had a small but significant effect on community composition, but not all species responded in the same way to nutrient enrichment.
  • 5 Although submerged aquatic plants exert an influence over the community composition of the periphyton which develops on their surfaces, it is unlikely that they manipulate it to make it more attractive to grazers such as snails.

Ninety‐two strains of Microcoleus vaginatus (=nomenclatural‐type species of the genus Microcoleus Desmazières ex Gomont) and Phormidium autumnale Trevisan ex Gomont from a wide diversity of regions and biotopes were examined using a combination of morphological and molecular methods. Phylogenies based on the 16S rDNA and 16S‐23S ITS (partial) demonstrated that the 92 strains, together with a number of strains in GenBank, were members of a highly supported monophyletic clade of strains (Bayesian posterior probability = 1.0) distant from the species‐cluster containing the generitype of Phormidium. Similarity of the 16S rRNA gene exceeded 95.5% among all members of the Microcoleus clade, but was less than 95% between any Microcoleus strains and species outside of the clade (e.g., Phormidium sensu stricto). These findings, which are in agreement with earlier studies on these taxa, necessitate the revision of Microcoleus to include P. autumnale. Furthermore, the cluster of Phormidium species in the P. autumnale group (known as Group VII) must be moved into Microcoleus as well, and these nomenclatural transfers are included in this study. The main diacritical characters defining Microcoleus are related to the cytomorphology of trichomes, including: narrowed trichome ends, calyptra, cells shorter than wide up to more or less isodiametric, and facultative presence of sheaths. The majority of species are 4–10 μm in diameter. The possession of multiple trichomes in a common sheath is present facultatively in many but not all species.  相似文献

We present a phytogeographical comparison between polar (Arctic and Antarctic) and non-polar strains of the cyanobacterial genus Phormidium, which plays a key role in Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems as primary producer. A total of 26 Phormidium strains were studied using a polyphasic approach, 18 from Arctic (Svalbard, Ellesmere Island and Scandinavian Arctic—Abisko) and Antarctic (Antarctic Peninsula—King George and James Ross Island) regions, and 8 from temperate sites (mostly situated in Central Europe). A phylogenetic tree was constructed and compared with similar 16S rRNA sequences retrieved from Genbank. Within the Phormidium autumnale cluster, genetic similarity of 16S rDNA was more related to geographical proximity of strain origin than to morphological similarity. No genetic identity of Phormidium strains from north and south polar regions was found. The cluster Phormidium autumnale apparently belongs to generic entities in which geographical limitation plays a prominent role. However, the cyanobacterial strains found in Europe suggest that the distribution areas of some Phormidium cyanobacteria overlap. The Phormidium autumnale cluster is evidently a very characteristic type and represents an isolated clade within the traditional genus Phormidium. According to morphological features and the structure of trichomes, it is most similar and thus probably belongs to the genus Microcoleus.  相似文献
