The permanent eastward current at the Straits of Gibraltar may trap small Atlantic loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) inside the western Mediterranean until their swimming and diving skills improve enough to allow them counter-current swimming abilities through the current. A captivity experiment with twelve loggerhead sea turtles (straight carapace length or SCL range: 25.3-48.0 cm) revealed that the average critical velocity of this species within the considered length range was 0.38 ± 0.16 m s− 1 or 1.01 ± 0.24 bl s− 1. As a consequence, loggerhead sea turtles are predicted to require a minimum SCL of 36.0 cm to swim counter-current through the Straits of Gibraltar, where the water velocity ranges 0.31-0.37 m s− 1. Genetic analysis of 105 specimens using one mitochondrial marker and seven microsatellites, as well as the recapture of three tagged individuals, support this conclusion; all Mediterranean individuals found in the Atlantic side of the Straits were not smaller than 36.0 cm SCL and the average length (47.3 cm SCL) was significantly higher than that of the Mediterranean turtles in the Mediterranean side of the Straits (31.6 cm SCL). Furthermore, the average length of the turtles of any origin moving from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic was much larger than 36.0 cm (SCL: 54.5 cm SCL), which may indicate the intervention of a different, yet unidentified mechanism restricting east-westward movement. The Algerian current, running along northern Africa, may at least partially explain the delayed departure of loggerhead sea turtles from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, as it would force the eastward drift of loggerheads occupying the southwestern Mediterranean. Exchange through the Straits is asymmetrical, and Atlantic turtles are found to enter the Mediterranean at a length of about 20.5 cm. However, once in the Mediterranean they would be retained there for up to 7.9 years, due to the surface circulation pattern. This increases the time span at which turtles are exposed to a high mortality rate, caused by fishing.  相似文献

The possibility of nest site fidelity of leatherback turtles, Dermochelys coriacea, raises concerns about the merit of translocating poorly located clutches to a safe hatchery. Specifically, if some females habitually nest in areas where the probability of egg survival is low because of tidal inundation, nest relocation may inadvertently select for turtles that make poor nest site selections. We investigate the nest site fidelity of leatherbacks by studying consecutive nest site selections by leatherbacks at Playa Grande, Costa Rica, from 1993 to 2001. Along the ocean-to-vegetation axis, consecutive nest placements were independent (G42=4.737, P=0.315). Regardless of previous zone choices, leatherbacks typically nested in the open beach above the high tide line and away from vegetation. Thus, concerns about translocation of poorly located nests are unfounded. Along the coastal axis, however, an independence model was rejected (G362=145.179, P<0.001). The log-linear model-based analysis we developed and applied indicated that the pattern of dependence in nest site locations is more consistent with a hypothesis of spatial proximity in which leatherbacks simply nest close to the site of the previous nest than it is with a hypothesis of intrinsic fidelity to a specific location on the beach. Our model-based approach is suitable for other settings where longitudinal nesting data are available.  相似文献

Background

Adult leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) exhibit thermal gradients between their bodies and the environment of ≥8°C in sub-polar waters and ≤4°C in the tropics. There has been no direct evidence for thermoregulation in leatherbacks although modelling and morphological studies have given an indication of how thermoregulation may be achieved.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We show for the first time that leatherbacks are indeed capable of thermoregulation from studies on juvenile leatherbacks of 16 and 37 kg. In cold water (< 25°C), flipper stroke frequency increased, heat loss through the plastron, carapace and flippers was minimized, and a positive thermal gradient of up to 2.3°C was maintained between body and environment. In warm water (25 – 31°C), turtles were inactive and heat loss through their plastron, carapace and flippers increased. The thermal gradient was minimized (0.5°C). Using a scaling model, we estimate that a 300 kg adult leatherback is able to maintain a maximum thermal gradient of 18.2°C in cold sub-polar waters.

Conclusions/Significance

In juvenile leatherbacks, heat gain is controlled behaviourally by increasing activity while heat flux is regulated physiologically, presumably by regulation of blood flow distribution. Hence, harnessing physiology and behaviour allows leatherbacks to keep warm while foraging in cold sub-polar waters and to prevent overheating in a tropical environment.  相似文献

Growth of the scyllarid lobster Scyllarides astori was estimated in the Galapagos Marine Reserve by use of tag-recapture data and analysis of length-frequency distributions. Asymptotic carapace lengths (CL), obtained from Powell-Wetherall plots, were 17.53 cm for males and 16.38 cm for females. A ‘forced’ Gulland-Holt plot gave growth constants (K) of 0.153 yr− 1 for males and 0.162 yr− 1 for females. The narrow size distribution suggests that juveniles occupy a different spatial niche and that adult growth is either very slow or that there is a terminal moult. Currently mainly used for local consumption, there is pressure to allow exportation of S. astori on a large scale to continental Ecuador and abroad. However, its slow growth and low abundance point to the need for a cautious approach and the implementation of clear and enforceable regulations in order to ensure the biological and economical sustainability of the population.  相似文献

The European pond turtle Emys orbicularis, is an endangered species in Poland. The region of the Ilanka River, in the western part of the country (Lubuskie province), is the most densely inhabited area by the species. Several populous sites are dispersed over the whole area of the province. Over the past 10 years, 279 turtles were captured at 11 sites. In 218 individuals, those with a straight carapace length (SCL) between 2.10–12.10 cm, sex was not determined; the remaining 61 with SCL 13.33–19.85 cm were sexed. Females had bigger bodies and were heavier than males. The SCL of females was 17.10 ± 1.7 cm (average ± SD, n = 33), their body mass (BM) was 790.6 ± 228.7 g (n = 27), and in the case of males SCL was 15.44 ± 1.5 cm and BM was 554.2 ± 138.8 g (n = 28). SCL of the smallest egg laying female was 15.30 cm, and SCL of the smallest mating male was 13.33 cm. The colouration of the turtles which undergoes change with age can be varied.  相似文献

Age and growth are important parameters for better understanding of life history and population dynamics of animal species, as well as for formulating management strategies. However, these data are difficult to obtain for sea turtles because of overall slow growth, delayed maturation and highly migratory behaviour. The loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, is a widely distributed species, globally listed as endangered. Although the species has been well‐studied in some regions, little is known about various aspects of its biology in other populations, such as those in the waters of the western South Atlantic Ocean, especially outside nesting areas. To address age and growth, loggerhead turtles found dead stranded on the northern coast of the state of Rio Grande do Sul during a period of 16 years (1994–2010) were utilized for estimation of age and growth rates using skeletochronology. The individuals analyzed were predominantly neritic juveniles, ranging from 53 to 101 cm curved carapace length (CCL; mean = 71 cm), with estimated ages between 10 and 29 years (mean = 15 years). Mean estimated annual growth rate was 2.1 cm CCL year?1 (1.9 cm SCL yr?1), showing large variation among individuals and between successive years in the same individual. Generalized additive mixed models analysis indicated that growth response was influenced by age, CCL and year. The results demonstrated that the southern coast of Brazil is an important area for the development of neritic juveniles of this species, which appear to recruit to this region beginning at about 12 years of age and sizes greater than 55 cm CCL.  相似文献

The growth dynamics of green sea turtles resident in four separate foraging grounds of the southern Great Barrier Reef genetic stock were assessed using a nonparametric regression modeling approach. Juveniles recruit to these grounds at the same size, but grow at foraging-ground-dependent rates that result in significant differences in expected size- or age-at-maturity. Mean age-at-maturity was estimated to vary from 25–50 years depending on the ground. This stock comprises mainly the same mtDNA haplotype, so geographic variability might be due to local environmental conditions rather than genetic factors, although the variability was not a function of latitudinal variation in environmental conditions or whether the food stock was seagrass or algae. Temporal variability in growth rates was evident in response to local environmental stochasticity, so geographic variability might be due to local food stock dynamics. Despite such variability, the expected size-specific growth rate function at all grounds displayed a similar nonmonotonic growth pattern with a juvenile growth spurt at 60–70 cm curved carapace length, (CCL) or 15–20 years of age. Sex-specific growth differences were also evident with females tending to grow faster than similar-sized males after the juvenile growth spurt. It is clear that slow sex-specific growth displaying both spatial and temporal variability and a juvenile growth spurt are distinct growth behaviors of green turtles from this stock.Communicated by Ecological Editor P.F. Two new diterpenes, lobocompactols A (1) and B (2), and five known compounds (3-7) were isolated from the methanol extract of the soft coral Lobophytum compactum using combined chromatographic methods and identified based on NMR and MS data. Each compound was evaluated for cytotoxic activity against A549 (lung) and HL-60 (acute promyelocytic leukemia) human cancer cell lines. Among them, compound 5 exhibited strong cytotoxic activity against the A549 cell line with an IC50 of 4.97 ± 0.06 μM. Compounds 3, 4, and 7 showed moderate activity with IC50 values of 23.03 ± 0.76, 31.13 ± 0.08, and 36.45 ± 0.01 μM, respectively. The cytotoxicity of 5 on the A549 cells was comparable to that of the positive control, mitoxantrone (MX). All compounds exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against the HL-60 cell line, with IC50 values ranging from 17.80 ± 1.43 to 59.06 ± 2.31 μM. Their antioxidant activity was also measured using oxygen radical absorbance capacity method, compounds 1 and 2 exhibiting moderate peroxyl radical scavenging activity of 1.4 and 1.3 μM Trolox equivalents, respectively, at a concentration of 5 μM.  相似文献

The current interest of the team has been focused on investigation of novel amides with potential cytotoxicity. The presented series of compounds was synthesized from selected steryl hemiesters and heteroaromatic amines. The synthetic protocol was designed in a simple and economic way, and divided into several general methodologies applicable to the compounds synthesized. The cytotoxicity was tested on cells derived from human T-lymphoblastic leukemia, breast adenocarcinoma and cervical cancer, and compared with tests on normal human fibroblasts. Most of the lanosterol-based compounds (35 and 710) showed medium to good cytotoxicity, while only two derivatives of cholesterol (18 and 19) showed medium cytotoxicity on human T-lymphoblastic leukemia cell line. The compounds 8 and 9 displayed the reasonable cytotoxicity among this series of amides, tested on the cell lines of T-lymphoblastic leukemia [14.5 ± 0.4 μM (8) and 18.5 ± 3.9 μM (9)], breast adenocarcinoma [19.5 ± 2.1 μM (8) and 23.1 ± 4.0 μM (9)] and cervical cancer [24.8 ± 5.3 μM (8) and 29.1 ± 4.7 μM (9)]. Understanding the distribution of bycaught sea turtles could inform conservation strategies and priorities. This research analyses the distribution of turtles caught as longline fisheries bycatch on the high seas of the Atlantic Ocean. This research collected 18,142 bycatch observations and 47.1 million hooks from large-scale Taiwanese longline vessels in the Atlantic Ocean from June 2002 to December 2013. The coverage rates were ranged from 0.48% to 17.54% by year. Seven hundred and sixty-seven turtles were caught, and the major species were leatherback (59.8%), olive ridley (27.1%) and loggerhead turtles (8.7%). Most olive ridley (81.7%) and loggerhead (82.1%) turtles were hooked, while the leatherbacks were both hooked (44.0%) and entangled (31.8%). Depending on the species, 21.4% to 57.7% were dead when brought onboard. Most of the turtles were caught in tropical areas, especially in the Gulf of Guinea (15°N-10°S, 30°W-10°E), but loggerheads were caught in the south Atlantic Ocean (25°S-35°S, 40°W-10°E and 30°S-40°S, 55°W-45°W). The bycatch rate was the highest at 0.030 per 1000 hooks for leatherbacks in the tropical area. The bycatch rates of olive ridley ranged from 0 to 0.010 per thousand hooks. The loggerhead bycatch rates were higher in the northern and southern Atlantic Ocean and ranged from 0.0128 to 0.0239 per thousand hooks. Due to the characteristics of the Taiwanese deep-set longline fleet, bycatch rates were lower than those of coastal longline fisheries, but mortality rates were higher because of the long hours of operation. Gear and bait modification should be considered to reduce sea turtle bycatch and increase survival rates while reducing the use of shallow hooks would also be helpful.  相似文献

Two new Cu(II) complexes, [Cu(acac)(dpq)Cl] () and [Cu(acac)(dppz)Cl] () (acac = acetylacetonate, dpq = dipyrido[3,2-d:20,30-f]quinoxaline, dppz = dipyrido[3,2-a:20,30-c] phenazine), have been synthesized and their DNA binding, photo-induced DNA cleavage activity and cell cytotoxicity are studied. The complexes show good binding propensity to calf thymus DNA in the order: 2(dppz) > 1(dpq). Furthermore, two complexes exhibit efficient DNA cleavage activity on natural light or UV-A (365 nm) irradiation via a mechanistic pathway involving formation of singlet oxygen as the reactive species. The photo-induced DNA cleavage activity of the dppz complex 2 is found to be more efficient than its dpq analogue. In vitro study of the photocytotoxicity of two complexes on HeLa cells indicate that both of them have the potential to act as effective anticancer drugs, with IC50 values of 5.25 ± 0.83 μM (1) and 4.40 ± 0.52 μM (2) in the natural light, and 2.57 ± 0.92 μM (1) and 2.18 ± 0.52 μM (2) in UV-A light. In addition, to detect an apoptotic HeLa body, cells were stained with Hoechst 33342 dye.  相似文献

Patterns of distribution, key biometric parameters and home range extent were determined for hawksbill turtles at Lighthouse Reef Atoll (LRA), Belize over two field seasons (16 days, 2009; 30 days, 2010). Relative abundance was determined using 49 sightings transects (≈ 1 km) distributed across the atoll and of all turtles encountered (n = 68), 91% were immature (CCLmin ≤ 65 cm). Habitat type was significantly correlated with abundance, with more turtles encountered on the coral reef than in the lagoon (GzLMM, χ22 = 6.85, p < 0.05; CPUE reef = 1.41 turtles h− 1, CPUE lagoon = 0.62 turtles h− 1). Hawksbills were also significantly more abundant within protected areas (GzLMM, χ21 = 8.69, p < 0.05; CPUE Blue Hole Natural Monument (BHNM) = 2.96 turtles person− 1 h− 1; CPUE Half Moon Caye Natural Monument (HMCNM) = 2.34 turtles h− 1; outside boundaries = 0.88 turtles h− 1). Of 26 captures, 19 focal individuals were equipped with ultrasonic transmitters for active acoustic telemetry, and tracked for 6-25 days (n = 10, 2009; n = 9, 2010). Spatial habitat utilisation was found to be highly variable, with large areas of overlap between distinct home ranges. Home range averaged 31.2 ha ± 32.6 (range 5.1-111.3 ha) for the juveniles that were successfully tracked (n = 15), with maximum displacement in the order of 1.8 km ± 1.0 (range 0.5-4.0 km) and net displacement at 1.2 km ± 0.9. This offshore atoll constitutes an important developmental habitat for the regional population and although our tracking durations were limited, home range of juvenile hawksbills at this site is significantly more expansive than that documented elsewhere.  相似文献

Over recent years there have been substantial efforts to record and interpret the post-nesting movements of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) breeding in tropical regions. Less well documented are the movements undertaken by individual turtles during the breeding season itself, or more specifically between sequential nesting events. Such movements are of interest for two reasons: (1) gravid female leatherbacks may range extensively into the territorial waters and nesting beaches of neighbouring countries, raising questions for conservationists and population ecologists; and (2) the magnitude of movements themselves help elucidate underlying reproductive strategies (e.g. whether to rest near to the nesting or forage extensively). Here, satellite relay data loggers are used (SRDLs) to detail the movements and behaviour of two female leatherback turtles throughout three consecutive inter-nesting intervals in the Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies. Both near-shore residence and extensive inter-nesting movements were recorded, contrasting previous studies, with movements away from the nesting beach increasing towards the end of the nesting season. Using this behavioural study as a backdrop, the suitability of attaching satellite transmitters directly to the carapace was additionally explored as an alternative approach to conventional harness deployments. Specifically, the principal aims were to (1) gather empirical data on speed of travel and (2) assess dive performance (aerobic dive limit) to enable comparisons with turtles previously fitted with harnesses elsewhere in the Caribbean (n = 6 turtles; Grenada, WI). This produced mixed results with animals bearing directly attached transmitters travelling significantly faster (55.21 km day− 1; SD 6.68) than harnessed individuals (39.80 km day− 1; SD 6.19); whilst no discernable difference in dive performance could be found between the two groups of study animals.  相似文献

The brown alga Laminaria japonica is distributed from southern Hokkaido to the northeastern Honshu in Japan. Recently, aquaculture of L. japonica has expanded to the southern coast of Japan and to China along the East China Sea. In order to elucidate the growth, biomass and productivity of L. japonica in a subtropical area, we cultivated and examined it in the Uwa Sea, in southwestern Japan over a period of 2 years. The seawater temperature ranged from 13.8 to 26.8 °C in 2001/2002 and from 13.1 to 27.2 °C in 2002/2003. In 2001/2002, the maximum density, maximum mean length and maximum mean wet wt. of L. japonica were 59.7 ± 28.0 ind. 50 cm− 1 (mean ± S.D.), 187.5 ± 82.7 cm (360 cm in the largest individual) and 130.1 ± 94.6 g wet wt., respectively. In 2002/2003, these values were 94.7 ± 22.2 ind. 50 cm− 1, 159.3 ± 74.4 cm (300 cm in the largest individual) and 95.2 ± 69.5 g wet wt., respectively. Thus, the length and weight increased when the density was low (2001/2002), and the length and weight decreased when the density was high (2002/2003). The maximum biomass was estimated to be 7200 ± 3400 g wet wt. 50 cm− 1 in 2001/2002 and 7300 ± 2000 g wet wt. 50 cm− 1 in 2002/2003. Annual production was estimated to be 33.3 kg wet wt. m− 1 year− 1 in 2001/2002 and 34.0 kg wet wt. m− 1 year− 1 in 2002/2003. The present study indicates that the annual production of L. japonica per rope of 1 m at Uwajima Bay, the Uwa Sea corresponded to 1.1-2.2 m2 of that of Hokkaido in their native area. Thus, the present study indicates that L. japonica is highly adaptable because it is able to keep a high level of productivity when grown in water with a high temperature.  相似文献

Marine Protected Areas are increasingly considered in coastal areas as an instrument to preserve threatened fauna and fragile habitats from the detrimental effects of human activities. For this reason baseline data are of utmost importance for the evaluation of the outcomes of ongoing conservation efforts. Along the Uruguayan coast, the area of Cerro Verde (declared protected since 2011) represents the most important foraging and development area for green turtles (Chelonia mydas). Between 2002 and 2009, a long-term capture-mark-recapture programme for green turtles was developed to gather data on demography, ecology and status of the species in the area. Turtles captured were juveniles ranging from 28.8 to 64.3?cm in length over the curve of the carapace (n?=?514), and results indicated a size-based habitat segregation. Tumour prevalence was 5.3% (n?=?27) and was positively correlated with carapace length. The mean body condition index was 1.25?±?0.14 (n?=?494). From the total number of tagged turtles 10.6% were recaptured during the study period. Green turtles showed high site fidelity; 81% of the turtles were recaptured within the same season and 76% were recaptured in different seasons but were found at the original capture spot. Mean annual growth rate was 1.6?±?0.9?cm year?1. The catch per unit effort of 2008 differed from 2009, higher in 2009, but also significantly different between capture spots. The present study constitutes a baseline dataset for future monitoring of green turtles in the area and provides valuable information for wider analyses of population dynamics in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

A series of 19 heterocyclic homoprostanoids were synthesized from easily available oleic and ricinoleic acids and evaluated for their possible antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperlipidaemic activities. Compounds with thioxo- and oxoimidazole ring (1) and (2) have shown potent antioxidant activity with IC50 values 0.23 ± 0.09 and 0.41 ± 0.01 mM comparable with standard ascorbic acid. Compound (3) with a quinoxaline ring showed maximum inhibition of BSA denaturation at 1 mM concentration and comparable with standard diclofenac. Incorporation of electron withdrawing substitutions like chloro- and nitro-groups in the quinoxaline ring has resulted in an increase anti-inflammatory activity. Test compounds (3), (3a) and (3c) showed modest inhibition of DPP-IV in vitro. However, the unsubstituted quinoxaline (3) and substituted quinoxalines (3b and 3c) reduced plasma glucose levels indicating the presence of hypoglycemic activity.  相似文献

Green turtles Chelonia mydas of immature and adult size (n = 19, curved carapace length 49 to 118 cm) were equipped with time-depth recorders for short periods (≤ 7 d) to investigate diel and seasonal variation in diving behaviour. Research sessions were distributed over 2 years to cover seasonal variation in sea temperature from 14 °C to 30 °C. Diurnal dives were shallower and shorter than nocturnal dives, with diel patterns also evident in dawn and dusk peaks in occupation of depths within 1 m of the surface, elevated diurnal occupation of depths 1 to 2 m below the surface and elevated nocturnal occupation of depths > 2 m. Dive duration increased as sea temperature decreased, showing strong negative correlation by day and by night. Study turtles made resting dives that were 3 to 4 times longer in median duration, and six times longer in maximum duration, at cool temperatures than they were at warm temperatures, but there was no evidence of winter diapause or location shift to avoid cold water. The large majority of turtles spent 89 to 100% of their time at depths ≤ 5 m below the surface, three individuals did not exceed 3 m and the maximum depth recorded by any turtle was 7.9 m, although deeper water was available. Furthermore, the dive data indicated that study turtles collectively spent more than 80% of their time at charted (low tide) depths of 3 m or less, indicating that they consistently used the shallow margins of the bay where human activities tend to be concentrated, thereby potentially increasing their exposure to anthropogenic threats.  相似文献

Twelve loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings (Caretta caretta) were removed from a nest site (A) at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), Virginia Beach, VA. Hatchlings were distributed among study participants, and raised in captivity for a period of two years. Growth of the loggerheads was recorded weekly by straight-line caliper measurements of carapace lengths as well as measurements of total weights. Growth rates from the present study were much greater than those measured in previous studies. Mean weights for Nest A turtles at 1.5 years ranged from 10.3 to 17.6 kg, with one exceptional individual reaching 20.0 kg. The data from this study provide new insights into the early growth potential of loggerhead sea turtles. Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are critically endangered, primarily threatened by the overharvesting of eggs, fisheries entanglement, and coastal development. The Pacific leatherback population has experienced a catastrophic decline over the past two decades. Leatherbacks foraging off the coast of California are part of a distinct Western Pacific breeding stock that nests on beaches in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. Although it has been proposed that the rapid decline of Pacific leatherback turtles is due to increased adult mortality, little is known about the health of this population. Health assessments in leatherbacks have examined females on nesting beaches, which provides valuable biological information, but might have limited applicability to the population as a whole. During September 2005 and 2007, we conducted physical examinations on 19 foraging Pacific leatherback turtles and measured normal physiologic parameters, baseline hematologic and plasma biochemistry values, and exposure to heavy metals (cadmium, lead, and mercury), organochlorine contaminants, and domoic acid. We compared hematologic values of foraging Pacific leatherbacks with their nesting counterparts in Papua New Guinea (n=11) and with other nesting populations in the Eastern Pacific in Costa Rica (n=8) and in the Atlantic in St. Croix (n=12). This study provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of the health status of leatherbacks in the Pacific. We found significant differences in blood values between foraging and nesting leatherbacks, which suggests that health assessment studies conducted only on nesting females might not accurately represent the whole population. The establishment of baseline physiologic data and blood values for healthy foraging leatherback turtles, including males, provides valuable data for long-term health monitoring and comparative studies of this endangered population.  相似文献

Biological limit reference points (LRPs) for fisheries catch represent upper bounds that avoid undesirable population states. LRPs can support consistent management evaluation among species and regions, and can advance ecosystem-based fisheries management. For transboundary species, LRPs prorated by local abundance can inform local management decisions when international coordination is lacking. We estimated LRPs for western Pacific leatherbacks in the U.S. West Coast Exclusive Economic Zone (WCEEZ) using three approaches with different types of information on local abundance. For the current application, the best-informed LRP used a local abundance estimate derived from nest counts, vital rate information, satellite tag data, and fishery observer data, and was calculated with a Potential Biological Removal estimator. Management strategy evaluation was used to set tuning parameters of the LRP estimators to satisfy risk tolerances for falling below population thresholds, and to evaluate sensitivity of population outcomes to bias in key inputs. We estimated local LRPs consistent with three hypothetical management objectives: allowing the population to rebuild to its maximum net productivity level (4.7 turtles per five years), limiting delay of population rebuilding (0.8 turtles per five years), or only preventing further decline (7.7 turtles per five years). These LRPs pertain to all human-caused removals and represent the WCEEZ contribution to meeting population management objectives within a broader international cooperative framework. We present multi-year estimates, because at low LRP values, annual assessments are prone to substantial error that can lead to volatile and costly management without providing further conservation benefit. The novel approach and the performance criteria used here are not a direct expression of the “jeopardy” standard of the U.S. Endangered Species Act, but they provide useful assessment information and could help guide international management frameworks. Given the range of abundance data scenarios addressed, LRPs should be estimable for many other areas, populations, and taxa.  相似文献
