Inhibition of photosynthesis after exposure to solar radiation was investigated in the marine green alga Dunaliella salina by monitoring photosynthetic optimal quantum yield Fv/Fm and efficiency of oxygen production. Samples were exposed to solar radiation in Ancient Korinth, Greece (37°58′ N, 23°0′ E) in August 1994. Within 30 min, Fv/Fm and efficiency of oxygen production decreased with similar kinetics with increasing exposure time. The inhibition, however, diminished when ultraviolet radiation was progressively excluded by means of colour filter glasses. Samples exposed for 3 h showed complete or partial recovery of photosynthesis, with almost the same rate under all irradition conditions. The fit of the experimental data with an analytical model describing inhibition of photosynthesis as a function of a linear combination of the photon fluence in the UV-B, UV-A and PAR allows one to estimate the relative mean effectiveness for inhibition by the three spectral ranges [about 2 × 10?4, 4 × 10?6 and 2 × 10?7 (μmol photons m?2)?1 for UV-B, UV-A and PAR, respectively].  相似文献

The physiological ecology of Prasiola stipitata was examined in situ from two supralittoral sites in the Bay of Fundy (Nova Scotian, Canada) during November 2011, when the population was undergoing major expansion. Photosynthetic parameters (effective quantum yield, ΦPSII, maximum quantum yield, Fv/Fm, and relative electron transport rate, rETR) were evaluated using chlorophyll fluorescence of PSII. A largely shaded and continuously moist population showed no change in ΦPSII from one hour after sunrise to sunset in which natural irradiance varied between 3 and 300 μmol photons m?2 s?1. High irradiance (up to 1800 μmol photons m?2 s?1) had no apparent negative impacts on either quantum yield or rETR, but high desiccation in the field reduced quantum yield to almost zero. When thalli were brought into the laboratory, no change in Fv/Fm was observed up to 60% dehydration; however, there was a steep decline in Fv/Fm between 60% and 85% dehydration. Thalli showed complete recovery of Fv/Fm within one hour of reimmersion in seawater after 2 days of desiccation. After 15 days of desiccation full recovery required 24 h and after 30 days of desiccation thalli showed only partial recovery. These observations confirm the adaptation to photosynthesis in high irradiances and the rapid recovery following extreme desiccation observed in other Prasiola species.  相似文献

The induction and protective role of the UV-absorbing compounds known as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were examined in sublittoral Chondrus crispus Stackh. transplanted for 2 weeks in the spring and summer to shallow water under three irradiance conditions: PAR (photosynthetically active radiation; 400–700 nm), PAR + UVA (PAR + 320– 400 nm), PAR + UVA + UVB (PAR + UVA + 280– 320 nm). Sublittoral thalli collected around Helgoland, North Sea, Germany, from 6 m below the mean low water of spring tides contained less than 0.1 mg·g−1 dry weight (DW) total MAAs, whereas eulittoral samples contained over 1 mg·g−1 DW. Transplantation to shallow water led to the immediate synthesis of three MAAs in the following temporal order: shinorine (λmax 334 nm), asterina (λmax 330 nm), and palythine (λmax 320 nm), with the shinorine content peaking and then declining after 2 days (exposure to 100 mol photons·m−2). Maximum total MAA content (2 mg·g−1 DW) also occurred after 2 days of induction, exceeding the content normally found in eulittoral samples. Furthermore, the relative proportion of the different MAAs at this time was different than that in eulittoral samples. After 2 days the total content declined to the eulittoral value, with palythine as the principal MAA. Similar data were obtained for all treatments, indicating that MAA synthesis in C. crispus was induced by PAR and not especially stimulated by UV radiation. The ability of photosystem II (PSII) to resist damage by UVB was tested periodically during the acclimation period by exposing samples to a defined UVB dose in the lab. Changes in chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm and effective quantum yield, φII) indicated that PSII function was inhibited during the initial stage of acclimation but gradually improved with time. No difference among screening treatments was detected except in spring for the samples acclimating to PAR + UVA + UVB. In this treatment Fv/Fm and φII were significantly lower than in the other treatments. During the first week of each experiment, growth rates were also significantly reduced by UVB. The reductions occurred despite maximum MAA content, indicating an incomplete protection of photosynthetic and growth-related processes.  相似文献

The changes in photosynthetic efficiency and photosynthetic pigments during dehydration of the resurrection plantSelaginella lepidophylla (from the Chiuhahuan desert, S.W. Texas, USA) were examined under different light conditions. Changes in the photosynthetic efficiency were deduced from chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements (Fo, Fm, and Fv) and pigment changes were measured by HPLC analysis. A small decrease in Fv/Fm was seen in hydrated stems in high light (650 μmol photons·m−2·s−1) but not in low light (50 μmol photons·m−2·s−1). However, a pronounced decline in Fv/Fm was observed during dehydration in both light treatments, after one to two hours of dehydration. A rise in Fo was observed only after six to ten hours of dehydration. Concomitant with the decrease in photosynthetic efficiency during dehydration a rise in the xanthophyll zeaxanthin was observed, even in low-light treatments. The increase in zeaxanthin can be related to previously observed photoprotective non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence in dehydrating stems ofS. lepidophylla. We hypothesize that under dehydrating conditions even low light levels become excessive and zeaxanthin-related photoprotection is engaged. We speculate that these processes, as well as stem curling and self shading (Eickmeier et al. 1992), serve to minimize photoinhibitory damage toS. lepidophylla during the process of dehydration.  相似文献

Many laboratories have solely used the Wilson isolate to physiologically characterize the harmful algal bloom (HAB) dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (C. C. Davis) G. Hansen et Moestrup. However, analysis of one isolate may lead to misinterpretations when extrapolating measurements to field populations. In this study, pulse‐amplitude‐modulated chlorophyll fluorometer (PAM‐FL) relative electron transport rate (ETR), Fv/Fm, and chl were compared with traditional techniques, such as 14C photosynthesis versus irradiance (P–E) curves, DCMU [3‐(3′,4′‐dichlorophenyl)‐1,1‐dimethyl urea] Fv/Fm, and extracted chl. The DCMU and PAM‐FL values of Fv/Fm (r2 = 0.51) and chl (r2 = 0.58) were in good agreement. There was no correlation between 14C and PAM‐FL α, Pmax, and β parameters because PAM‐FL ETR was only a relative measurement. The PAM‐FL techniques were then used to investigate P–E curves, quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), and chl from 10 K. brevis isolates to determine whether one or all isolates would better represent the species. Comparisons were made with a radial photosynthetron, which allowed for controlled conditions of light and temperature. Isolate α, Pmax, and β varied between 0.097 and 0.204 μmol e? · m?2 · s?1 · (μmol quanta · m?2 · s?1)?1, 80.41 and 241 μmol e? · m?2 · s?1, and 0.005 and 0.160 μmol e? · m?2 · s?1 · (μmol quanta · m?2 · s?1)?1, respectively. Either carbon limitation and/or bacterial negative feedback were implicated as the cause of the P–E parameter variability. Furthermore, these results directly contradicted some literature suggestions that K. brevis is a low‐light‐adapted dinoflagellate. Results showed that K. brevis was more than capable of utilizing and surviving in light conditions that may be present on cloudless days off Florida.

Photosynthetic rates of green leaves (GL) and green flower petals (GFP) of the CAM plant Dendrobium cv. Burana Jade and their sensitivities to different growth irradiances were studied in shade-grown plants over a period of 4 weeks. Maximal photosynthetic O2 evolution rates and CAM acidities [dawn/dusk fluctuations in titratable acidity] were higher in leaves exposed to intermediate sunlight [a maximal photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 500–600 μmol m−2 s−1] than in leaves grown under full sunlight (a maximal PPFD of 1 000–1 200 μmol m−2 s−1) and shade (a maximal PPFD of 200–250 μmol m−2 s−1). However, these two parameters of GFP were highest in plants grown under the shade and lowest in full sun-grown plants. Both GL and GFP of plants exposed to full sunlight had lower predawn Fv/Fm [dark adapted ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence (the maximal photosystem 2 yield without actinic irradiation)] than those of shade-grown plants. When exposed to intermediate sunlight, however, there were no significant changes in predawn Fv/Fm in GL whereas a significant decrease in predawn Fv/Fm was found in GFP of the same plant. GFP exposed to full sunlight exhibited a greater decrease in predawn Fv/Fm compared to those exposed to intermediate sunlight. The patterns of changes in total chlorophyll (Chl) content of GL and GFP were similar to those of Fv/Fm. Although midday Fv/Fm fluctuated with prevailing irradiance, changes of midday Fv/Fm after exposure to different growth irradiances were similar to those of predawn Fv/Fm in both GL and GFP. The decreases in predawn and midday Fv/Fm were much more pronounced in GFP than in GL under full sunlight, indicating greater sensitivity in GFP to high irradiance (HI). In the laboratory, electron transport rate and photochemical and non-photochemical quenching of Chl fluorescence were also determined under different irradiances. All results indicated that GFP are more susceptible to HI than GL. Although the GFP of Dendrobium cv. Burana Jade require a lower amount of radiant energy for photosynthesis and this plant is usually grown in the shade, is not necessarily a shade plant.  相似文献

Arsenic is a critical contaminant that is released into the environment through geochemical processes and anthropic actions. Two independent hydroponic experiments were performed to evaluate the ecophysiological responses of water hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] to As under various stress conditions. In experiment 1, water hyacinth was exposed to As5+ at concentrations of 0, 0.2, 2.0, and 20 mg L?1 for 0, 2, and 4 d; in experiment 2, water hyacinth was exposed at concentrations of 0, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1 mg L?1 for 0, 10, and 20 d. In both experiments, As accumulation in plant tissue was proportional to its increase in the nutrient solution; As concentrations were higher in roots than in shoots. Detrimental effects of As on gas exchange were observed and were more pronounced in experiment 1. In experiment 1, at the beginning on the second day of exposure, significant decreases of maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), variable chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/F0), and photosynthetic pigment contents were observed in plants exposed to 2.0 and 20 mg(As5+) L?1. It indicated that damage to the photosynthetic apparatus had occurred. No changes in Fv/Fm, Fv/F0, and contents of photosynthetic pigments were observed in the plants grown in the presence of 0.2 mg(As5+) L?1 (in experiment 1) or after any of the treatments in experiment 2, indicating plant tolerance. Elevated nonphotochemical quenching was observed in experiment 2 after 20 d of exposure to As; it was as a part of protection mechanisms of the photosynthetic apparatus in these plants. The results obtained here indicate that the use of water hyacinth for As5+ removal from highly impacted environments is limited but that it is effective in remediating sites with a low contamination.  相似文献

Fertile Saccharina latissima sporophytes, collected in the Kongsfjorden, Ny‐Ålesund, Spitsbergen, Norway (78°56.87′ N, 11°51.64′ E) were investigated in relation to its sensitivity to experimentally enhanced ultraviolet radiation : photosynthetically active radiation (UVR : PAR) ratios. Irradiance of UVR were 4.30 W m?2 of UV‐A (320–400 nm) and 0.40 W m?2 of UV‐B (280–320 nm), and PAR (400–700 nm) was ~4.30 W m?2 (=20 µmol photons m?2 s?1). Excised soral (sporogenic) and non‐soral (vegetative) tissues were separately irradiated for 16 h at 7°C. Transmission electron microscopy showed abundant occurrence of physodes, electron dense particles (~300–600 nm) in the sorus. Paraphysis cells, with partly crystalline content, large mitochondria and abundant golgi bodies were towering over the sporangia. In soral tissue, cells were not visibly altered by the PAR + UVR irradiation. The chloroplasts, flagella and nucleus of unreleased meiospores inside the sporangial parent cells were visibly intact. Severe changes in the chloroplast structure of vegetative tissue occurred after PAR + UVR irradiation. These changes included wrinkling and dilatation of the thylakoid membranes, and appearance of electron translucent areas inside the chloroplasts. In vegetative cells exposed to PAR + UVR, the total amount of physodes, was slightly higher as in cells exposed to PAR only. Initial values of optimum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) were 0.743 ± 0.04 in non‐soral and 0.633 ± 0.04 in soral tissue. Vegetative tissue was observed to be more sensitive to radiant exposure of PAR and PAR + UVR compared to reproductive tissue. Under PAR, a 20% reduction in Fv/Fm was observed in non‐soral compared to no reduction in soral tissue, whereas under PAR + UVR, 60% and 33% reduction in Fv/Fm was observed in non‐soral and soral tissues, respectively. This can be attributed to the corresponding three times higher antiradical power (ARP) capacity in soral compared to non‐soral tissue.  相似文献

We photosynthetically characterized two rice cultivars - salt-sensitive ‘Annapurna’, and salt-tolerant ‘Dongjin’ - growing under NaCl stress. Both cultivars showed an increase in Fo/Fm (the ratio of initial to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence) and a decrease in Fv/Fm (an indicator of the photochemical efficiency of PS II). In particular, the Fv value for Annapurna significant declined while Fo/Fm was enhanced when plants were exposed to salt stress for 4 d. Annapurna also exhibited more rapid decreases in the coefficients for photochemical quenching (qQ) and non-photochemical quenching (qNP) than did Dongjin. In contrast, zeaxanthin formation was largely influenced by exposure to light rather than to high salinity, with Annapurna having a higher rate of production compared with Dongjin. When both cultivars were exposed to salt stress for 2 d, Annapurna had a much lower rate of photosynthetic oxygen evolution, corresponding to only 46% of the control; the rate for Dongjin was 90% of the control. Salt stress in both cultivars induced the accumulation of two osmoprotectants, glycinebetaine and proline, the rate being higher for the latter. These results indicate that Annapurna is more sensitive than Dongjin to salt stress, in terms of its deterioration in photosynthetic function.  相似文献

The influence of irradiance on photosynthesis under natural conditions was studied in aseasonal Singapore using three Heliconia taxa: H. rostrata, H. psittacorum × H. spathocircinata cv. Golden Torch and H. psittacorum cv. Tay. When grown under full sunlight, all three heliconias exhibited reduced phatosynthetic capacities and lowered chlorophyll content per leaf area as compared with those grown under intermediate and deep shade. A marked decrease in the chlorophyll fluorescence Fv/Fm ratio and an increase in photochemical quenching (1- qp) and non-photochemical quenching (qN) were observed in upper leaves of plants grown under full sunlight. Increases in qN suggest that ‘photoinhibition’ (decreases in Fv/Fm) in Heliconia grown under natural tropical conditions are probably due to photoprotective energy dissipation processes. The quantum yield, the maximum photosynthetic rate, Fv/Fm and the chlorophyll content of upper leaves were lower than those of lower leaves on the same plants grown under full sunlight. Similarly, lower values were obtained for the tip (sun) portion than for the base (shaded) portion of the leaves. The changes in Fv/Fm and in the levels of (1 –qp) in leaves grown under intermediate and deep shade were negligible in plants during the course of day. However, there was a steep decrease in Fv/Fm and an increase in the levels of (1 –qp), along with an increase in incident light in the sun leaves. The lowest Fv/Fm and the highest level of (1 –qp) indicated minimum PSII efficiency at midday in full sun. These results indicate that, in Heliconia, the top leaves (particularly leaf tips) experienced sustained decreases in PSII efficiency upon exposure to full sunlight. Although all three taxa exhibited sustained decreases in photosynthetic capacity in full sunlight, the sun leaves of ‘Tay’ showed higher photosynthetic capacity than those of the other two taxa. This could be due, at least in part, to the vertical leaf angle and smaller lamina area. When the upright leaves of ‘Tay’ were constrained to a horizontal angle, they exhibited lower PSII efficiency (FvIFm ratio), while horizontal leaves of ‘Rostrata’ and ‘Golden Torch’ inclined lo near-vertical angles showed increased efficiency. Thus, an increase in leaf angle helps to achieve a reduction in the sustained decrease in PSII efficiency by decreasing the levels of incident sunlight and subsequently the leaf temperature.  相似文献

Sandy plains are characteristic of the coastal region of Brazil. We investigated the diel patterns of changes in organic acid levels, leaf conductance and chlorophylla fluorescence for sun-exposed and shaded plants ofClusia hilariana, one of the dominant woody species in the sandy coastal plains of northern Rio de Janeiro state. Both exposed and shaded plants showed a typical CAM pattern with considerable diel oscillations in organic acid levels. The degradation of both malic and citric acids during the midday stomatal closure period could lead to potential CO2 fixation rates of 28 mol m-2 s-1 in exposed leaves. Moreover, exposed leaves exhibited large increases in total non-photochemical quenching (qN) accompanied by a substantial decrease in effective quantum yield during the course of the day. However, these potential high rates of CO2 fixation and the increases inqn of exposed plants were not enough to maintain the primary electron acceptor of photosystem II (qA) in a low reduction state, similar to that of shaded plants. As a result, there was a moderate increase in the reduction state of qA throughout the day. Most of the decline in photochemical efficiency of exposed leaves ofC. hilariana was reversible, as evidenced by the high levels of pre-dawn potential quantum yields (Fv/Fm) and their rapid recovery after sunset. However, the depletion of the organic acid pool in the afternoon resulted in an accentuated subsequent drop in Fv/Fm, suggesting that prolonged periods of water stress accompanied by high irradiance levels may expose plants ofC. hilariana in unprotected habitats to the danger of photoinhibition.  相似文献

In this study, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (?F/F m′, F v/F m) and oxygen evolution of female vegetative tissues of Porphyra katadai var. hemiphylla in unisexual culture (FV) and in mixed culture with male vegetative tissues (FV-M) were followed at 5–20 °C, 10 and 80 μmol photons m?2 s?1. The formation of reproductive tissues was closely correlated with decreasing photosynthetic activities. At the same temperature the tissues cultured under 80 μmol photons m?2 s?1 showed a greater extent of maturation than those under 10 μmol photons m?2 s?1, and their decrease in photosynthesis was also larger. Under the same light intensity the extent of maturation increased with increasing temperature, and both cultures showed higher values of ?F/F m′ and F v/F m at 10 and 15 °C, while their oxygen evolution became negative at 15–20 °C during the later period. Under the same culture condition the maturation of FV-M culture was relatively faster than that of FV culture, while their photosynthetic activity, especially ?F/F m′, was lower.  相似文献

Photoinhibition and pigment composition of green stem tissues of field-grown adult Eucalyptus nitens were measured on clear spring days with low morning temperatures—conditions that cause photoinhibition in leaves of many plant species. The sun-exposed (north-facing) bark contained less chlorophyll a+b (531 vs 748 mol m–2), neoxanthin (29 vs 41), and -carotene (54 vs 73), more xanthophyll cycle pigments per unit surface area and per unit chlorophyll (71 vs 53 mol m–2 and 141 vs 66 mmol mol–1 chlorophyll), and less lutein per unit chlorophyll (239 vs 190) than the shaded (southern) side. Maximum electron flow rates were 60 mol m–2 s–1 on the sun-exposed side, and about 10 mol m–2 s–1 on the shaded side. Fv/Fm was always lower than 0.8 on the sun-exposed side and the de-epoxidation state (DEPS) of the xanthophyll cycle was dominated by zeaxanthin in midday samples. Fv/Fm increased quickly after darkening, but DEPS recovered more slowly to 40% overnight. This suggested that rapidly reversible pH-dependent quenching was responsible for the bulk of changes in PS II efficiency. Fv/Fm remained below 0.8 overnight, which may well be indicative of photo-damage to PSII. In contrast, DEPS of the shaded side was lower, and Fv/Fm was higher, than for the sun-exposed side. We conclude that E. nitens chlorenchyma on the sun-exposed stem side has a photosynthetic pigment composition similar to sun leaves and it experiences significant photoinhibition in the field.  相似文献

Dry cork layer (phellem) in stems of Populus tremula transmitted 35–55 percent of incident irradiation, depending upon moisture content. A cover of crustose Lecanora lichens reduced transmission through phellem to 10 percent or less of incident irradiation. The bark contains photosynthetically active cells. Apparent quantum yield for photosynthetic O2-evolution was 0.017 in bark covered with dry Lecanora compared with 0.070 in naked bark. The capacity for gross photosynthesis in high light (1090 μmol photons m?2 s?1) was reduced by 50 percent in Lecanora-covered bark. Lecanora did not reduce the ratio between variable and maximal chlorophyll a fluorescence (Fv/Fm). Chlorophyll content per unit area was similar in leaves and naked bark of Populus tremula. The chlorophyll content in the bark decreased with increasing chlorophyll content in Lecanora. Chlorophyll a/b ratio was 2.5 in the bark compared with 4.0 in leaves and in Lecanora, and the ratio decreased down the stems. The a/b ratio was 2.3 in Lecanora covered bark compared with 2.6 in naked bark. The changes in bark photosynthesis below a Lecanora crust were probably due to acclimation of bark photosynthesis to shade, since the lichen acids in the measured lichens neither suppressed photosynthetic O2-evolution nor changed the Fv/Fm in bark disks.  相似文献

Phytoplankton can be exposed to periods of N starvation with episodic N resupply. N starvation in Dunaliella tertiolecta (Butcher) measured over 4 days was characterized by slow reduction in cell chl and protein content and chl/carotenoid ratio and a decline in photosynthetic capacity and maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis (Fv/Fm). In the early stages of N starvation, cell division was maintained despite reduction in cellular chl. Chl content was more sensitive than carotenoids to N deprivation, and cellular chl a was maintained preferentially over chl b under N starvation. NO3? resupply stimulated rapid and complete recovery of Fv/Fm (from 0.4 to 0.7) within 24 h and commencement of cell division after 10 h, although N‐replete levels of cell chl and protein were not reestablished within 24 h. Recovery of Fv/Fm was correlated with increases in cell chl and protein and was more related to increases in Fm than to changes in F0. Recovery of Fv/Fm was biphasic with a second phase of recovery commencing 4–6 h after resupply of NO3?. Uptake of NO3? from the external medium and the recovery of Fv/Fm, cell chl, and protein were inhibited when either cytosolic or chloroplastic protein synthesis was inhibited by cycloheximide or lincomycin, respectively; a time lag observed before maximum NO3? uptake was consistent with synthesis of NO3? transporters and assimilation enzymes. When both chloroplastic and cytosolic translation was inhibited, Fv/Fm declined dramatically. Dunaliella tertiolecta demonstrated a capacity to rapidly reestablish photosynthetic function and initiate cell division after N resupply, an important strategy in competing for limiting inorganic N resources.  相似文献

The susceptibility to photoinhibition of tree species from three different successional stages were examined using chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange techniques. The three deciduous broadleaf tree species were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, pioneer and early successional, Quercus mongolica, intermediate shade‐tolerant and mid‐successional, and Acer mono, shade‐tolerant and late successional. Tree seedlings were raised under three light regimes: full sunlight (open), 10% full sun, and 5% full sun. Susceptibility to photoinhibition was assessed on the basis of the recovery kinetics of the ratio of vaviable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) of detached leaf discs exposed to about 2000 μmol m?1 s?1 photon flux density (PFD) for 2 h under controlled conditions (25 to 28 °C, fully hydrated). Differences in susceptibility to photodamage among species were not significant in the open and 10% full sun treatments. But in 5% full sun, B. platyphylla sustained a significantly greater photodamage than other species, probably associated with having the lowest photosynthetic capacity indicated by light‐saturated photosynthetic rate (B. platyphylla, 9·87, 5·85 and 2·82; Q. mongolica, 8·05, 6·28 and 4·41; A. mono, 7·93, 6·11 and 5·08 μmol CO2 m?1 s?1for open, 10% and 5% full sun, respectively). To simulate a gap formation and assess its complex effects including high temperature and water stress in addition to strong light on the susceptibility to photoinhibition, we examined photoinhibition in the field by means of monitoring ΔF/Fm on the first day of transfer to natural daylight. Compared with ΔF/Fm in AM, the lower ΔF/Fm in PM responding to lower PFD following high PFD around noon indicated that photoinhibition occurred in plants grown in 10 and 5% full sun. The diurnal changes of ΔF/Fm showed that Q. mongolica grown in 5% full sun was less susceptible to photoinhibition than A. mono although they showed little differences both in photosynthetic capacity in intact leaves and susceptibility to photoinhibition based on leaf disc measurements. These results suggest that shade‐grown Q. mongolica had a higher tolerance for additional stresses such as high temperature and water stress in the field, possibly due to their lower plasticity in leaf anatomy to low light environment.  相似文献

Near-isogenic lines of maize varying in their genes for flavonoid biosynthesis were utilized to examine the effects of foliar flavonoids and nutrient deficiency on maximum net photosynthetic rate (P N) and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (Fv/Fm) in response to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Plants with deficient (30 to 70 % lower N, K, Mn, Fe, and Zn) and sufficient nutrients were exposed to four irradiation regimes: (1) no UV-B with solar photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), (2) two day shift to ambient artificial UV-B, 8.2–9.5 kJ m−2 d−1 (21–25 mmol m−2 d−1); (3) continuous ambient artificial UV-B; (4) continuous solar UV-B in Hawaii 12–18 kJ m−2 d−1 (32–47 mmol m−2 d−1). The natural ratio of UVB: PAR (0.25–0.40) was maintained in the UV-B treatments. In the adequately fertilized plants, lines b and lc had higher contents of flavonoids and anthocyanins than did lines hi27 and dta. UV-B induced the accumulation of foliar flavonoids in lines hi27 and b, but not in the low flavonoid line dta or in the high flavonoid line lc. In plants grown on deficient relative to adequate nutrients, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents decreased by 30–40 and 40–50 %, respectively, and Chl a and Chl b contents decreased by 30 and 70 %, respectively. The UV-B treatments did not significantly affect P N and Fv/Fm in plants grown on sufficient nutrients, except in the low flavonoid lines dta and hi27 in which P N and Fv/Fm decreased by ∼15 %. P N, Fv/Fm, and stomatal conductance decreased markedly (20–30 %) in all lines exposed to UV-B when grown on low nutrients. The decrease in Fv/Fm was 10 % less in higher flavonoid lines b and lc. The photosynthetic apparatus of maize readily tolerated ambient UV-B in the tropics when plants were adequately fertilized. In contrast, ambient UV-B combined with nutrient deficiency significantly reduced photosynthesis in this C4 plant. Nutrient deficiency increased the susceptibility of maize to UV-B-induced photoinhibition in part by decreasing the contents of photoprotective compounds.  相似文献

Enhanced ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280?C320?nm) is recognized as one of the environmental stress factors that cannot be neglected. Jasmonic acid (JA) is an important signaling molecule in a plant??s defense against biotic and abiotic stresses. To determine the role of exogenous JA in the resistance of wheat to stress from UV-B radiation, wheat seedlings were exposed to 0.9?kJ?m?2?h?1 UV-B radiation for 12?h after pretreatment with 1 and 2.5?mM JA, and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), the content of UV-B absorbing compounds, photosynthetic pigments, and proline and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured. The results of two-way ANOVA illustrated that the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), MDA level, anthocyanin and carotenoid (Car) content, and almost all chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were significantly affected by UV-B, JA, and UV-B?×?JA (P?<?0.05) [the maximal efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (F v/F m) was not affected significantly by UV-B radiation]. Duncan??s multiple-range tests demonstrated that UV-B stress induced a significant reduction in plant photosystem II (PSII) function and SOD activity and an increased level of membrane lipid peroxidation, indicative of the deleterious effect of UV-B radiation on wheat. JA pretreatment obviously mitigated the detrimental effect of UV-B on PSII function by increasing F v/F m, reaction centers?? excitation energy capture efficiency (F v??/F m??), effective photosystem II quantum yield (??PSII), and photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR), and by decreasing nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) of wheat seedlings. Moreover, the activity of SOD and the content of proline and anthocyanin were provoked by exogenous JA. However, the MDA level was increased and Car content was decreased by exogenous JA with or without the presence of supplementary UV-B, whereas the contents of chlorophyll and flavonoids and related phenolics were not affected by exogenous JA. Meanwhile, exogenous JA resulted in a decrease of CAT and POD activities under UV-B radiation stress. These results partly confirm the hypothesis that exogenous JA could counteract the negative effects of UV-B stress on wheat seedlings to some extent.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effects of low irradiation (LI) on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Jinyou 35) during a ripening stage, our experiment was carried out in a climate chamber. Two levels of PAR were set for plants: normal irradiation [NI, 600 μmol(photon) m?2 s?1] and low irradiation [LI, 100 μmol(photon) m?2 s?1], respectively. The experiments lasted for 9 d; then both groups of plants were transferred under NI to recover for 16 d. The plants showed severe chlorosis after the LI treatment. Chlorophyll (Chl) a, initial slope, photosynthetic rate at saturating irradiation (Pmax), light saturation point, maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), electron transport rate of PSII (ETR), soluble protein content, and catalase (CAT) activity in cucumber leaves decreased under LI stress, while Chl b, carotenoids, light compensation point, nonphotochemical quenching (qN), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) exhibited an increasing trend under LI. After 16 d of recovery, values of Pmax, Fv/Fm, ETR, qN, SOD, CAT, MDA, and soluble protein were close to those of the control after one, three, and five days of the LI treatment, while those kept under LI for 7 and 9 d could not return to the control level. Therefore, 7 d of LI stress was a meteorological disaster index for LI in cucumber at the fruit stage.  相似文献
