Several central European species have failed to reach the British Isles because of the early separation from the continent. The two tree species Fagus sylvatica and Carpinus betulus reached southern England but were unable to spread much further. Other species, such as Acer pseudoplatanus, were only relatively recently introduced. Recent distribution maps for Fagus and Acer show an almost uninterrupted distribution in the whole British Isles. The beech must be considered to be an important element of the present potential natural vegetation; it has been planted widely and regenerates freely. The woodlands of Brittany may provide a model to enable us to visualize the possible species composition and appearance of these potential Atlantic beech woods.Nomenclature of vascular taxa follows Ehrendorfer (1973).  相似文献

Abstract. Up to now the syntaxonomy of the Fagus woods of the southern Balkans is far less known than that of beech communities in the northwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula and in central and western Europe. A set of 607 phytosociological relevés from southeastern Serbia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and northern and central Greece was subjected to numerical classification and ordination. These results were used for a syntaxonomic revision of Fagus, Fagus‐Abies and Fagus‐Acer woodland communities of the southwestern Balkans. The Doronico columnae‐Fagenion (seven associations from Serbia, the F.Y.R.O.M., and high altitudes in northern Greece) and the Doronico orientalis‐Fagenion (four associations from northern and central Greece) were distinguished. The results of ordination by Canonical Variates Analysis (CVA) showed a very distinct phytogeographical pattern of differentiation between community types. The floristic composition of Fagus woods changes markedly along the north‐south gradient. The share of Subbalkan, Balkan, Submediterranean and Mediterranean species increases significantly towards the south, while the Central‐European, European, Euro‐Siberian, Euro‐Asiatic and Circumpolar species decrease in the same direction. The syntaxonomic differentiation of the Fagus woodlands and their classification into regional suballiances reflects this gradient. With the rise in altitude, the number of Balkan, Mediterranean, Submediterranean, European and Euro‐Asiatic species declines.  相似文献

Fagus (beech) is among the most abundant and economically important genera of broad-leaved trees in northern hemisphere temperate forests. The number of modern taxa present in Europe and Asia Minor has long been a matter of debate and up to five species have been recognised. To resolve taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships we conducted morphological and molecular genetic analyses in western Eurasiatic taxa and evaluated palaeontological evidence. To place our findings from western Eurasiatic populations in a broader context additional East Asiatic and North American species of the same subgenus Fagus as well as two species of the subgenus Engleriana were included in our study. The morphological features exhibited in western Eurasiatic populations of Fagus show a west-east gradient that is characterised by strongly overlapping variability between geographical races. Fagus populations from Asia Minor exhibit an even higher variability that is also reflected in their genetic variability of nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. The intraspecific genetic variability recorded here is in conflict with previous ITS studies in Fagus. The high amount of ITS polymorphism within Fagus from western Eurasia along with the clinal variation observed for morphological characters suggest the presence of only a single species, Fagus sylvatica L., in Europe and Asia Minor. Previously recognised taxa such as F. orientalis Lipsky and Fagus moesiaca (Maly) Czeczott should therefore be treated as synonyms of Fagus sylvatica. Although species belonging to the subgenus Engleriana were genetically distinct from species of the subgenus Fagus, relationships within the subgenus Fagus could not be clearly resolved. A reason for this could be the low rate of diversification in Fagus during the early phase of range expansion of the genus in the Oligocene period as indicated by the uniformity of leaf and cupule/nut fossils. This may account for the low overall ITS divergence and the high degree of polymorphism encountered in the subgenus Fagus and points to a late differentiation of western Eurasiatic and eastern Asiatic species. Area disruptions during the Pleistocene and the post-glacial recolonisation of western Europe appear to have caused the west-east gradient that is apparent in modern Fagus of western Eurasia but absent in Late Tertiary ancestors of Fagus sylvatica. A systematic reassessment of megafossil records ofFagaceae in Central Europe has been undertaken on the basis of leaf cuticular characters. The oldest representatives date back to the Eocene:Quercus subhercynica spec. nova,Dryophyllum furcinerve (Rossm.)Schmalh.,Trigonobalanopsis rhamnoides (Rossm.) gen. & comb. nov. In the Oligocene other members of extant genera appear:Quercus rhenana (Weyl. & Kilpp.)Knobloch & Kvaek,Fagus attenuata Goepp.,Lithocarpus saxonicus spec. nova. In the Neogene these ancient taxa (except inFagus lineage), are gradually replaced by deciduous species ofQuercus andCastanea. Trigonobalanus andCastanopsis are recorded by fruits (or wood) only.  相似文献

Summary In the Central Europaean mountain ranges, the alpine timberline is usually formed by Picea abies or by other conifers (Larix decidua, Pinus mugo, Pinus cembra). Unlike in the East Europaean mountains, the Balkan Peninsula, the Europaean Mediterranean and Les Vosges, Fagus silvatica occurs sporadically on the alpine timberline in this area where it forms very specific woods. This type of the alpine timberline is bound to the association Aceri-Fagetum (Bartsch 1940, Moor 1952). This association is found on the highest sites of the Fagion alliance in the subalpine vegetation zone. Within this zone, the association is bound to localities with heavy snowfall and a submaritime climat. It occupies larger areas in the Swiss Jura and in Les Vosges. In other Central Europaean mountains (the Alps, Schwarzwald, Krkonoe etc.) it occus in isolated areas only. Many trunk deformations and bush forms are found with Fagus on a large scale in the snow impacted localities (steep slopes, periphery of corries, avalanche slopes etc.). Crawling and sliding snow causes these growth deformations in the Fagus seedlings since their first year. The general increase of the vegetative propagation is a remarkable and exceptional response of Fagus in adapting to these extreme growth conditions. Under alpine timberline conditions, the generative propagation is very limited. The vegetative shoots with adventitious root systems are formed mainly from branches layering in the humus. The typical monocormonal tree-form of Fagus from lower altitudes turns in this way into a polycormon. From an evolutionary point of view, it is a suitable substitution; but from the ecological viewpoint, however, it is a sturdy growth form. In its typical form, the polycormon is formed by a number of vegetative shoots, which may be deformed but are very elastic and resistent. The number of shoots in a polycormon varies from 3–5 below, and up to 40–50 at and above the timberline. They are formed by shoots of a number of filial successions. The decay of a polycormon results from decreasing vitality of single shoots or, very often, it is caused by the impact of snow and ice. Considering, however, the fact that single shoots have a sufficient adventitious root system and are thus physiologically independent, the dying of the other shoots does not mean a danger for the existence of the remaining part of the polycormon. The age of a polycormon as a whole is difficult to determine. Fagus polycormons can be considered as a typical growthform of the highest sites of the association Aceri-Fagetum. No other tree species is able to form close stands under these conditions. This phenomenon is of primary importance for the existence of this plant community. The unusual character of the structure and dynamics of the highest Aceri-Fagetum stands gives rise to a special type of the alpine timberline which should be understood not as a line but as a transitional zone between the closed stands and the hon-wooded plant communities of the subalpine vegetation zone. The dynamic succession of the Fagus polycormons guarantees the stability of the Fagus stands forming the alpine timberline.

We analysed patterns of woody species richness in Pinus sylvestris and Fagus sylvatica forests in Catalonia (NE Spain) from forestry inventory databank in relation to climate and landscape structure. Both types of forests are found within the same climatic range, although they have been managed following somewhat different goals. Overall, woody species richness significantly increased when conditions get closer to the Mediterranean ones, with milder temperatures. Differences between the two types of forests arose when comparing the relationship between richness and forest patch size. Woody species richness increased in pine forests with patch size, while the opposite trend was observed in beech forests. This pattern is explained by the different behaviour of structural canopy properties, since leaf area index and canopy cover showed a steeper increase with increasing forest patch size in Fagus forests than in Pinus ones. Accordingly, richness decreased with canopy cover in Fagus plots, but not in Pinus ones. We suggest that these differences would be related to management history, which may have enhanced the preservation of beech stands in larger forest landscape units.  相似文献

The compositions of BF3/CH3OH depolymerisates of cutins and suberins from leaf and periderm samples from Picea abies [L.] Karst., Quercus robur L., and Fagus sylvatica L., respectively, were determined by quantitative capillary gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. Long-chain monobasic, -hydroxymonobasic, dihydroxymonobasic, trihydroxymonobasic and epoxyhydroxymonobasic alkanoic acids constituted the major aliphatic monomers of leaf cutins. The total amounts of cutin monomers ranged from 629 mg · m–2 (Fagus) to 1350 mg · m–2 (Quercus). Cutin composition and amounts did not significantly differ between current year and three-year-old needles of Picea. Trans-esterification of periderm samples yielded a much greater variety of aliphatic monomers than obtained from cutins. In addition to the substance classes found with cutins, suberin depolymerisates also contained , -dibasic acids while dihydroxymonobasic acids were lacking. Depolymerisates from periderms taken from different locations on a Picea tree did not differ significantly in their relative composition. The results are discussed in terms of the distinctive characteristics of the aliphatic portions of cutins and suberins, respectively. Discriminant analysis is applied for formulating a quantitative and inarbitrary classification rule for cutins and suberins. The precision, statistical significance and robustness of this classification rule are tested by employing it to a large set of compositional data (70 plant species) from the literature. The relevance of data obtained by depolymerization methods for elucidating the physical structure of cutins and suberins in situ is evaluated. To whom correspondence should be addressedThe authors are indebted to Drs. A newly developed portable chlorophyll fluorometer in combination with a special leaf clip holder was used for assessing photosynthetic activity of attached sun leaves of Fagus sylvatica and Cucurbita pepo under field conditions. During diurnal time courses, fluorescence yield, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) incident on the leaf plane, and leaf temperature were measured and quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PS II), apparent relative electron transport rates, and non-photochemical fluorescence quenching (NPQ) calculated. In both species, quantum efficiency followed closely the incident PPFD and no hysteresis could be observed during the day. Apparent electron transport rate showed light saturation above a PPFD of 700 mol m–2 s–1 in F. sylvatica, while in C. pepo no saturation was visible up to 1400 mol m–2 s–1. NPQ was closely correlated to excessive PPFD calculated from the PS II quantum yield. Maximal NPQ observed was 3.3 Although the beech leaf was exposed for a considerable time to PPFD values of 1400–1500 mol m–2 s–1 and leaf temperatures between 30 and 35°C, no obvious signs for sustained photodamage could be observed. The data demonstrate the potential of chlorophyll fluorescence measurements to analyse photosynthetic performance under field conditions with minimal disturbance of the plant. Potential error sources due to the geometry of the leaf clip holder used are discussed.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. F.-C. Czygan on the occasion of his 60th birthday  相似文献

Occurrence and direction of introgressive hybridization between Plantago major taxa were tested. Plantago major plants were collected from 10 Egyptian locations. Four populations of two European taxa were used for comparison. These are ecologically and geographically separated and were identified as the subspecies Plantago major ssp. major and Plantago major ssp. intermedia. In the Egyptian populations, most individuals fall within the variation range of P. major ssp. intermedia. Only one population, from Burg El-Arab, morphologically resembled clearly P. major ssp. major and showed some ISSR fragments that characterize pure populations of this taxon. All individuals of population 2 (Alexandria) and some individuals of populations 1, 3, 5, 6 and 10 (Alexandria, Aswan) morphologically corresponded to P. major ssp. intermedia. All individuals collected from Egypt had ISSR fragments characterizing both pure P. major ssp. major and pure P. major ssp. intermedia. Most of these individuals had a higher percentage of intermedia-type fragments than major-type fragments, suggesting that P. major ssp. intermedia in Egypt shows some introgression towards P. major ssp. major. The pure populations were distinct from each other, while the Egyptian populations were intermediate according to principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) of ISSR data. In the populations collected from Egypt, major and intermedia cannot be seen as separate species. The study suggests that the dominant taxa introgressed to the minority population(s). Taxon frequency may be a key component in determining the direction of introgression.  相似文献

A species ofMycosphaerella with aPseudocercospora anamorph was collected on overwintered fallen leaves of Japanese beech,Fagus crenata. Based on comparison of morphology withMycosphaerella species on Fagaceae, the fungus was newly described asMycosphaerella buna. ThePseudocercospora anamorph derived from a single ascospore of the fungus was morphologically identical to an endophytic anamorph isolated from asymptomatic living leaves of Japanese beech. We studied the autumn food habits of the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) from 1993 to 1997, based on 202 fecal samples in the Chichibu Mountains, central Japan. Nuts occupied the highest proportions of autumn foods (59.9–85.8% important values). Although the proportion of nuts of Quercus crispula, Fagus crenata and Fagus japonica varied greatly between the years, acorns of Q.crispula were most prevalent in four of the five years. We also determined the relative nut production of these three species by counting the number of nuts or cupules on the ground. Black bears consumed the nuts according to their relative availabilities. Nuts of Q.crispula appeared to be the most important food because: (i) these nuts were eaten in the highest proportion in four of the five study years; and (ii) even in poor years the bears consumed acorns of Q.crispula, whereas nuts of Fagus spp. were not consumed. We discuss the significance of alternative foods for black bears in relation to food tree diversity in the forest and the necessity for long-term studies examining the food habits of Asiatic black bears.  相似文献

Summary The ability of two bacterial toxins to modify a plant actin by covalent ADP-ribosylation was tested in the green algaChara corallina. Using [32P]NAD, bothClostridium botulinum C2 toxin andClostridium perfringens iota toxin labelled a protein of Mr 42 kDa which comigrated with actin and was immunoprecipitated by a monoclonal anti-actin antibody. ADP-ribosylation ofChara actin was more efficient with iota toxin than with C2 toxin. The actin bundles in perfusedChara cells were not affected by toxin-containing media competent for ADP-ribosylation. The data indicate that monomeric plant actin is substrate for ADP-ribosylation by the bacterial toxins.Abbreviations ADP adenosine-diphosphate - EGTA ethyleneglycol-bis-(-aminoethyl)N,N,N,N-tetraacetic acid - NAD nicotinamide dinucleotide - pCA -log [Ca2+] - PIPES piperazine-N,N-bis(2-ethanesulfonic acid) Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. We investigated factors that limited the distribution of phytophagous species within a woodiand system in Midlothian, Scotland. A pattern analysis was conducted of phytophagous species on a total of 45 Fagus sylvatica within 15 woodlands. Species richness counted on collected leaves was tested against within-and between-wood variables. Variables used in a regression with arthropod data from Fagus were used to estimate the phytophage richness on Betula pendula and Quercus robur in the same woods. Convariance in the number of phytophages in sampled woods was found for Fagus over three years and for Fagus, Betula and Quercus in 1992. Association analysis was used to classify the woods into species rich or poor based on presence or absence matrices. The main factors that limit phytophages on Fagus (gaps along the woodland edge, depth and species richness of the field layer. density of leaf litter and the extent of contiguous woodland cover, when including hedgerows and lines of trees) affect phytophages of similar life history strategy on other tree species within the same woods. Eighty-six per cent of species were lost because certain life history stages were vulnerable to factors that prevail in woods of poor structure. The nature conservation value of woodlands could be assessed using the correlated vulnerability of particular phytophages across tree species under specific woodland conditions.  相似文献

Summary The outer segments of pineal photoreceptor cells ofSalmo gairdneri were investigated with the scanning electron microscope. The scanning electron micrographs showed three different types of outer segments. These results are discussed with respect to the ultrastructural concepts of Rüdeberg (1969) and Bergmann (1971). Scanning electron microscopy permits better anatomical classification of pineal photoreceptor cells according to the form of their outer segments.

Taxonomic complexity may be associated with migration history and polyploidy. We used plastid and nuclear DNA markers to investigate the evolutionary history of the systematically challenging Dactylorhiza maculata polyploid complex. A total of 1833 individuals from 298 populations from throughout Europe were analysed. We found that gene flow was limited between the two major taxa, diploid ssp. fuchsii (including ssp. saccifera) and tetraploid ssp. maculata. A minimum of three autotetraploid lineages were discerned: (1) southern/western ssp. maculata; (2) northern/eastern ssp. maculata; and (3) Central European ssp. fuchsii. The two ssp. maculata lineages, which probably pre‐date the last glaciation, form a contact zone with high genetic diversity in central Scandinavia. Intermediate plastid haplotypes in the contact zone hint at recombination. Central Europe may have been a source area for the postglacial migration for the southern/western lineage of ssp. maculata, as well as for ssp. fuchsii. The northern/eastern lineage of ssp. maculata may have survived the LGM in central Russia west of the Urals. The tetraploid lineage of ssp. fuchsii is indistinguishable from diploid ssp. fuchsii, and is probably of postglacial origin. The Mediterranean region and the Caucasus have not contributed to the northward migration of either ssp. fuchsii or ssp. maculata. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 503–525.  相似文献

Diffusion coefficients for thirteen lipophilic organic compounds in reconstituted waxes of Fagus sylvatica L. and Picea abies (L.) Karst. were measured to characterise the transport properties of the cuticular waxes that form the transport-limiting barrier of plant cuticles. Desorption kinetics (relative amounts desorbed versus time) were asymptotic, but could be linearized up to 50% desorption by plotting relative amounts desorbed versus the square root of time. Diffusion coefficients calculated from the slopes of the linear regressions ranged from 10–22 to 10–17 m2·s–1 and decreased with increasing molecular size. This size dependency of diffusion coefficients was analysed, assuming an exponential dependence of the diffusion coefficients on molar volumes, which allowed cuticular transport properties to be related to the physical structure of the wax. Furthermore, the fact that the barrier properties of Fagus wax are less pronounced than those of Picea is interpreted as an ecological adaptation of the respective tree species to their habitats at the level of their cuticular transport barriers.Abbreviation D diffusion coefficient The authors gratefully acknowledge financial support by the Schwerpunkt Programm Baumphysiologie of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

Ultrastructure and function of the excretory organ of Ascaris lumbricoides L. (Nematoda)
Summary The Excretory organ (H-system) of Ascaris lumbricoides has been investigated electronmicroscopically. In adult animals this single-cell-organ embedded in the lateral lines extends from the nerve ring to approximately the middle of the body.In the second quarter of the body it lacks a continuous canal lumen, and it seems to be degenerated. In all of the other regions (except the stem leading to the excretory pore) it consists of two zones. The inner zone lining the canal lumen contains several extraplasmatic spaces; at least those placed the farthest inside communicate with the canal lumen. The outer cell membrane shows many infoldings, some of which extend deeply into the cytoplasm. The tissue of the lateral line adjacent to the canal system contains very many intercellular spaces which build a coherent intracellular rainage-system. Experiments have been performed in order to localize the ATPase activity histochemically. Possible mechanisms for the forming of the excretory fluid are discussed under consideration of physiological results already published.

Here, palaeobotanical and genetic data for common beech (Fagus sylvatica) in Europe are used to evaluate the genetic consequences of long-term survival in refuge areas and postglacial spread. Four large datasets are presented, including over 400 fossil-pollen sites, 80 plant-macrofossil sites, and 450 and 600 modern beech populations for chloroplast and nuclear markers, respectively. The largely complementary palaeobotanical and genetic data indicate that: (i) beech survived the last glacial period in multiple refuge areas; (ii) the central European refugia were separated from the Mediterranean refugia; (iii) the Mediterranean refuges did not contribute to the colonization of central and northern Europe; (iv) some populations expanded considerably during the postglacial period, while others experienced only a limited expansion; (v) the mountain chains were not geographical barriers for beech but rather facilitated its diffusion; and (vi) the modern genetic diversity was shaped over multiple glacial-interglacial cycles. This scenario differs from many recent treatments of tree phylogeography in Europe that largely focus on the last ice age and the postglacial period to interpret genetic structure and argue that the southern peninsulas (Iberian, Italian and Balkan) were the main source areas for trees in central and northern Europe.  相似文献
