River Ganga is the largest river of Indian subcontinent and it originates in the state of Uttarakhand. Because of its importance in Indian culture and dense population residing at banks, it faces several forced and unforced human activities. In the present study, Gangetic river system of Uttarakhand (India) was studied in detail for quality of water. Samples were collected from 32 different sites and physicochemical and microbiological analysis was performed during summer, rainy and winter seasons. These samples were subjected to bacteriological analysis, i.e. total viable count, total coliform count and faecal streptococcal count. The physicochemical analysis of the water samples includes pH, temperature, specific conductance, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The bacterial genera were identified on the basis of their morphological and physiological characteristics. The present study confirmed the presence of bacterial indicators of faecal origin at various altitudes in every stretch of Gangetic river system. The results of bacteriological analysis of water revealed that the situation is alarming. The lower regions of Gangetic river system of Uttarakhand facing severe anthropological activities, mostly due to religious belief were heavily polluted. A huge bacterial gene pool was obtained after this study which was indicative of immense bacterial diversity in the region.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation of chromium from retan chrome liquor by Spirulina fusiformis was investigated under laboratory as well as field conditions. At the optimal conditions, metal ion uptake increased with initial metal ion concentration up to 300 mg/l. The effect on various physico-chemical parameters like total solids (TS), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), chlorides, sulphates, phenols, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical studies related to biomass, chlorophyll-a and protein were also carried out. The present study indicates that S. fusiformis is very effective in removal of chromium (93–99%) besides removing other toxicants from retan chrome liquor. The sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and FTIR studies indicate the interaction/complexation between Cr and alga. The mechanism involved in bioaccumulation of chromium is also discussed. The process when upgraded can be applied for detoxification of tannery effluents.  相似文献

The critical role of water quality for all animals, and especially dairy cattle, the dairy products of which are consumed by humans, raises the need for an index which represents well the quality of water consumed by dairy cattle. Noting the high subjectivity and inappropriate classifications that traditional methods apply to development an index, we aimed to develop a better index that measures the quality of drinking water supplied to dairy cattle (DCWQI1) based on fuzzy logic. Using fuzzy logic enabled us to capture experts’ knowledge and to simulate the human's way of thinking in the design of the index. Our approach avoided the shortcomings of the previous models. We selected 20 parameters that available literature determined were critical to assessing the quality of water for dairy cattle to drink due mainly to their potential impacts both on dairy cattle and human health. These parameters were: dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, fecal coliform, heterotrophic plate count, hardness, alkalinity, arsenic, lead, mercury, nickel, cadmium, chromium, total phosphorous, H2S, nitrate, and fluoride. We used trapezoidal membership functions and the final ruleset consisted of 550 rules. Mamdani inference system captured experts’ knowledge and experience; center-of-gravity method was used to defuzzify the results. To evaluate the index performance, we conducted a case study of Karun River employing the water quality data from six sampling stations along the river over the period of 2007–2010 and compared the results to those from the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) water quality index (WQI). Our study found that the water quality of Karun River lies in the low to medium range (annual mean index values of 38–55). In addition, the values from the fuzzy DCWQI were generally lower than the values from the NSF WQI, mainly because the DCWQI included heavy metals in its index, while the NSF WQI did not. Results of the present study suggest that DCWQI can be considered as a comprehensive tool for assessing the quality of water for dairy cattle drinking purposes and can be reliably used for that objective.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of environmental variation on assemblages of dragonfly larvae (Odonata). We hypothesize that there is a significant correlation between species richness, species composition, and abundance of Odonata individuals, and habitat integrity and abiotic variables. To test this hypothesis, we sampled odonate larvae at 12 streams in the Suiá-Miçú River basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil, during three different periods of the year. Local physical and chemical variables (temperature, pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), and oxidation reduction potential (ORP)) were measured at each site using a multi-parameter probe, and integrity was assessed using the Habitat Integrity Index (HII). The variation in richness, abundance, and composition of Odonata species was related to the environmental variables analyzed, primarily by the abiotic factors pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, and oxidation reduction potential. Our hypothesis was corroborated for the suborder Anisoptera, which showed a significant relationship with these variables, whereas Zygoptera was only related to pH. Our results show the importance of physical and chemical conditions in ecological studies using Odonata larvae as tools for the management and conservation of freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken from June 2015 to May 2017 in Tal Chhapar Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS), Churu, Rajasthan that represents one of the unique and important grassland ecosystems in the Thar desert of India but has not been assessed ecologically. In this work the water quality assessment of the area is carried out in terms of physicochemical parameters and water quality index to fill this gap. The surface water samples were collected from the water surface with two replicates per sampling occasion for the summer, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons. The physicochemical analysis for eight parameters were carried out following prescribed methods, viz., pH-by pH meter, total dissolved solids (TDS) -gravimetric analysis and filtration, chloride- silver nitrate titration, sulphate- turbidimetric, phosphate-stannous chloride, nitrate-brucine, calcium- EDTA titration, and iron- calorimetric methods. The relationship between the parameters was analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis, and the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME WQI) was calculated from these parameters. The study revealed water to be slightly alkaline (7.27–7.63) in the area. Most of the physicochemical parameters of water were found to be within the acceptable limits of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) except for TDS and phosphate. The TDS showed a very strong to moderate correlation with chloride (r = 0.97), iron (r = 0.79), sulphate (r = 0.58), and calcium (r = 0.52) that revealed these ions were the major components in the makeup of the dissolved solids in the water sample. The CCME WQI indicated the water quality was fair and suitable for drinking purposes for wildlife in the area. In absence of any such prior study in the area, the overall findings of the present work is highly significant that can be used by the management authorities for future environmental monitoring and holistic development of the area.

The conventional wetland system using Phragmites sp. is in existence since 20 years. The constructed wetland system has not gained much popularity due to large land area requirement, clogging of beds and need for capital investment. The aim of the study is to develop a new approach to the horizontal flow wetlands system (termed bio-rack) for treatment of domestic wastewater. The new system dealt with an engineered attached growth matrix and a high microbial degradation rate. The study on bio-rack was undertaken in a horizontal flow pilot plant using Phragmites sp. and experiments were carried out for various parameters. Analytical data were collected during the studies which include temperature, pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), dissolved oxygen (DO), chlorides, total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), phosphate (PO4-P) and most probable number (MPN). This paper also studies microbial flora present in the system by isolating and identifying the microorganisms, and also measuring total viable count (TVC). Morphological aspects with reference to the growth of plant were studied and it indicated high plant yield. At optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h, approximately 75.15% COD, 86.59% BOD5, 27.54% TDS, 73.13% TSS, 8.86% Chlorides, 70.22% NH3-N, 31.71% PO4-P and 92.11% MPN reduction was achieved in bio-rack system. A comparative evaluation was done with the conventional wetland system and better treatment efficiency was observed in the bio-rack system. This result indicates a possibility of development of a substantially effective system compared to any other methods on constructed wetland.  相似文献

Gilgel Gibe hydroelectric power dam was located in the submerging part of the Addis Ababa, Jimma highway in Ethiopia which is about 55 km far from Jimma was constructed in 2004. A cross-sectional study was conducted during 2005 to assess the siltation and nutrient enrichment level of the dam. It was found from the study that siltation and nutrient enrichment were the major problems in this reservoir. The sheet erosion of catchment area was found to be 4.47x10(7) ton/year and hence 2210 ton/km(2). The contribution of the sediment load deposition of the Gilgel Gibe River to the dam was 277,437 ton/year and the total sediment load was 4.50x10(7)ton/year and this amount could cover 3.75x10(7) m(3)/year of the dam. From the analysis of water samples of Gilgel Gibe dam, the concentrations of ammonia, chlorophyll a, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), pH and temperature were found within the permissible limits as prescribed by WHO standards, but other parameters like phosphate, nitrate, sulphate, total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS) and visibility were much higher than the permissible limits. Due to the high concentration of suspended and sediment load, the secchi disc visibility of Gilgel Gibe dam was 0.72 m which indicated that it was well within the range of eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

Low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels often occur during summer in tidal creeks along the southeastern coast of the USA. We analyzed rates of oxygen loss as water-column biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and sediment oxygen flux (SOF) at selected tidal creek sites monthly over a 1-year period. Ancillary physical, chemical and biological data were collected to identify factors related to oxygen loss. BOD5 rates ranged from 0.0 mg l?1 to 7.6 mg l?1 and were correlated positively with organic suspended solids, total suspended solids, chlorophyll a concentrations, temperature, and dissolved oxygen, and negatively with pH and nitrate + nitrite. SOF rates ranged from 0.0 to 9.3 g O2 m?2 d?1, and were positively correlated with temperature, chlorophyll a, and total suspended solids, but negatively with dissolved oxygen. Both forms of oxygen uptake were seasonally dependent, with BOD5 elevated in spring and summer and SOF elevated in summer and fall. Average oxygen loss to sediments was greater and more variable than oxygen loss in the water column. Oxygen deficits at three of five locations were significantly related to BOD5 and SOF, but not at two sites where ground water discharges were observed. Correlation and principal component analyses suggested that BOD5 and SOF responded to somewhat different suites of environmental variables. BOD5 was driven by a set of parameters linked to warm season storm water inputs that stimulated organic seston loads, especially chlorophyll a, while SOF behaved less strongly so. Runoff processes that increase loads of organic material and nutrients and ground water discharges low in dissolved oxygen contribute to occurrences of low dissolved oxygen in tidal creeks.  相似文献

Fish faunal diversity and their abundance vary to a great extent in respect to physical, chemical and biological parameters of the water body. The present study deals with the fish biodiversity and distribution with respect to several physicochemical characters of the habitat, from August-2013 to January-2015 in the Kangsabati River, Paschim Medinipur District of West Bengal. Occurrence of 45 fish species belonging to 8 orders, 17 families and 29 genera have been noted during the study period. It is evident that the members belonging to Cyprinifomes constitute 41 % of the total fish fauna of the river. Fluctuation in occurrence and abundance of the species are influenced by a number of physicochemical parameters viz. pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, conductivity and suspended solids.  相似文献

Present study was designed to obtain estimation about ground water quality of Bhimber, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan. A total of 12 water samples were collected from different localities of study area to analyze for various physicochemical and biological parameters i.e. namely temperature, pH, turbidity, color, odor, taste, electric conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness (Calcium + Magnesium), chloride, arsenic, phosphate, lead, ammonium ion, nitrite, Fecal coliform and Escherichia coli. Results exposed that all ground water samples of study area were grossly contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms like E. coli and Fecal coliform except one water sample that was obtained from community filter plant Samahni Chowk site. Besides it, values of some physicochemical water quality determining parameters also deviated from recommended limits of World Health Organization (WHO). Chloride ion concentration was little below the prescribed limits in almost all water samples. It has been proven that consumption of un-safe drinking water is one of the major cause of prevalence of water borne diseases like diarrhea, gastroenteritis, typhoid fever and malaria etc. in study area. Community water supply and sanitation projects should be encouraged; government should provide filter plants in all regions of the country so that people could have easy approach to safe drinking water.  相似文献

Impact of abattoir effluents (characterized by intestinal and stomach contents of slaughtered animals, ashes from roasted animals and blood stains) on water quality, distribution and abundance of Diptera were investigated in an urban stream, River Orogodo, Southern Nigeria, from July 2003 to June 2004. Water quality changes indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) in conductivity, dissolved oxygen, BOD5, COD, total hardness, nitrate-nitrogen and phosphate-phosphorus between the three stations sampled. Higher values of these parameters were observed at the impacted station. The abundance and community structure of Diptera patterns, especially Chironomidae, Culicidae and Syrphidae families (all indicative of poor water quality) showed strong evidence of impact from the abattoir effluents. Comparisons of abundance values demonstrated high significance (p < 0.05) between the impacted station and the upstream (station 1) and downstream station (station 3). Shannon index and Berger–Parker dominance were greater at the impacted station (station 2). Analysis of faunal similarities showed that upstream station 1(unpolluted site) was significantly different from stations 2 and 3. The distinct taxa found in station 2 (the impacted station) suggest that the organic input from the abattoir favoured their abundance as most of them were opportunistic species.  相似文献

During precipitation events, untreated human sewage is often intentionally discharged to surface water bodies via combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems in order to avoid overloading wastewater treatment plants. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the risk of pathogen-related disease associated with CSO discharges into the Lower Passaic River. Concentrations of fecal coliform, total coliform, fecal Streptococcus, and fecal Enterococcus bacteria were measured at six river locations on six different days in 2003 (n = 36). In addition, water samples (n = 2) were collected directly from and in the immediate vicinity of a discharging CSO in Newark, NJ. These samples were analyzed for fecal coliforms, total coliforms, fecal Streptococcus, fecal Enterococcus, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, and several viruses. Risk estimates for gastrointestinal illness and Giardia infection resulting from indirect and direct ingestion of contaminated water were calculated for three potential exposure scenarios: visitor, recreator, and homeless person. Single-event risk was first evaluated for the three individual exposure scenarios; overall risk was then determined over a 1-year period. Monte Carlo techniques were used to characterize uncertainty. Nearly all of the pathogen concentrations measured in the Passaic River exceeded health-based water quality criteria and in some cases were similar to levels reported for raw sewage. The probability of contracting gastrointestinal illness due to fecal Streptococcus and Enterococcus from incidental ingestion of water over the course of a year ranged from 0.14 to nearly 0.70 for the visitor and recreator scenarios, respectively. For the homeless person exposure scenario, the risk for gastrointestinal illness reached 0.88 for fecal Streptococcus and Enterococcus, while the probability of Giardia infection was 1.0. This risk analysis suggests that, due to the levels of pathogens present in the Lower Passaic River, contact with the water poses, and will continue to pose, significant human health risks until CSO discharges are adequately controlled or abated.  相似文献

Background

Recycled treated or untreated wastewater represents an important health challenge in developing countries due to potential water related microbiological exposure. Our aim was to assess water quality and health implications in a Mexico City periurban agricultural area.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A longitudinal study in the Xochimilco wetland area was conducted, and 42 sites were randomly selected from 211, including irrigation water canals and effluents of treatment plants. Sample collection took place during rainy and dry seasons (2000–2001). Microbiological parameters (total coliforms, fecal coliforms, streptococci/enterococci, and bacteria other than Vibrio grown on TCBS), Helicobacter pylori, and physicochemical parameters including trihalomethanes (THM) were determined. Fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci are appropriate indicators of human or animal fecal contamination. Fecal coliform counts surpass Mexican and World Health Organization irrigation water guidelines. Identified microorganisms associated with various pathologies in humans and domestic animals comprise Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Salmonella spp., Enterobacter spp., Enterococcus spp., and Pseudomonas spp; H. pylori was also present in the water. An environmental characteristic of the canal system showed high Total Organic Carbon content and relatively low dissolved oxygen concentration; residual chlorine as a disinfection control is not efficient, but THMs do not represent a problem. During the rainy season, temperature and conductivity were higher; in contrast, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and residual chlorine were lower. This is related with the continuous load of feces from human and animal sources, and to the aquatic systems, which vary seasonally and exhibit evidence of lower water quality in effluents from treatment plants.

Conclusions/Significance

There is a need for improvement of wastewater treatment systems, as well as more efficient monitoring, regulation, and enforcement procedures for wastewater disposal into bodies of water.  相似文献

The total viable count, population density of Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria, and nitrogen in the microbiomass (microbiomass-N) in sediments were monitored monthly at 12 points in the Ongagawa River basin from June 2002 to May 2006. The measurement of the sediment microbiomass-N was used for evaluation of the sediment’s microbial population in the river ecosystem. An extraordinarily high population of E. coli was observed during the season when there was stagnant water in the basin, with a high population and an insufficient drain diffusion system, and, thus hydrological water control is indispensable to prevent rapid E. coli growth. Microbiomass-N in sediments showed a negative correlation or independent fluctuation in relation to the bacterial population in the water column of the river. Seasonal changes in extracted nitrogen (N) in river sediments did not show correspondence with microbiomass-N in sediments. The microbiomass-N in sediments changed independently of the bacterial population in the river water, indicating that the high population of bacteria in the water does not lead to a high microbial population in river sediments. Ordination of the microbial parameters by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that microbiomass-N in sediments was quite different from other parameters. Relatively higher H+ (lower pH), PO4 3− concentration and dissolved oxygen (DO) were the determinant parameters of higher microbiomass-N in sediments. A relative microbial abundance between the water column and sediments as well as each of the microbial populations in the water column and sediments could be a quantitative parameter for evaluating the biochemical processes of stream water.  相似文献

The biology of Corbicula fluminea, the Asiatic clam, in the Vermilion River, Louisiana, as affected by sediment, dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, and sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents was investigated. A point source of high DO water to the Vermilion River established a gradient of DO that decreased as the river moved towards the Gulf of Mexico. Lowering DO levels were exacerbated by municipal sewage treatment plant discharges in the 20 km reach studied. Low dissolved oxygen was associated with reduced Corbicula density in the river and 30-day in-stream growth studies (weight and length) demonstrated that low DO inhibited growth. Generally, if DO was < 1.0 mg l–1 in sediment pore water and/or < 3.0 mg l–1 at the sediment-water interface, growth was significantly impaired (p < 0.05). Corbicula experienced substantial mortality near the STP discharges (up to 70% in 30 days) and laboratory toxicity tests with Ceriodaphnia dubia, a sensitive cladoceran, also strongly suggested discharges were chronically toxic at 6.25–25.0% effluent. Respiration experiments along with environmental measurements of DO, temperature, and STP discharge chemistry support a hypothesis that clam populations are adversely affected by the suite of environmental conditions present in the Vermilion River. Further, growth studies were consistent with observed population densities in situ.  相似文献

The purpose of this microcosm experiment was to determine whether the freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa affected phytoplankton community and water quality. Three treatments of different snail densities (low, medium, and high) and a control (no snails) were set up in twelve enclosures. Chlorophyll a (chl a), transparency (SD), water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, nutrients, and abundance of phytoplankton were determined on days 0, 3, 7, 11, 15, 23, 31, 46, and 61. The total chl a concentration decreased and SD increased in the treatments, whereas the proportion of cyanobacteria chl a increased. Bellamya seemed to result indirectly in a decrease of DO, by reducing the algal biomass rather than by respiration. A significant decrease in nitrogen–phosphorus ratios was observed in the treatments. In the enclosed system the abundance of colonial green algae decreased over time whereas that of cyanobacteria and flagellates increased. Principal response curves showed that both phytoplankton community and water quality in the medium and high-density treatments were consistently different from in the control. These results indicate that the presence of snails resulted in a significant change of water physicochemical properties and phytoplankton community.  相似文献

An eco-friendly and cost effective technique- phytoremediation was used to remediate contaminants from waste water. This study demonstrated that phytoremediation ability of duckweed (Lemna minor L.) to remove chloride, sulphate from Biological Oxygen Treatment (BOT) waste water of coke oven plant. The BOT water quality was assessed by analyzing physico-biochemical characters – pH, Biological oxygen demand (BOD), Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS) and elemental concentration. It was observed that an increase in pH value indicated an improvement of water quality. The experimental results showed that, duckweed effectively removed 30% chloride, 16% sulphate and 14% TDS from BOT waste water, which suggested its ability in phytoremediation for removal of chloride and sulphate from BOT waste water. A maximum increase of 30% relative growth rate of duckweed was achieved after 21 days of experiment. Thus, it was concluded that duckweed, an aquatic plant, can be considered for treatment of the effluent discharged from the coke oven plant.  相似文献

To improve water quality and reduce the negative impacts of sudden inputs of water pollution in the Lixia River watershed, China, a series of experimental water transfers from the Yangtze River to the Lixia River were conducted from 2 December 2006 to 7 January 2007. Water samples were collected every six days at 55 monitoring sites during this period. Eight water parameters (water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), potassium permanganate index (CODMn), ammonia nitrogen (NH4 +-N), electrical conductivity (EC), and water transparency (WT)) were analyzed to determine changes in nutrient concentrations during water transfers. The comprehensive pollution index (Pi) and single-factor (Si) evaluation methods were applied to evaluate spatio-temporal patterns of water quality during water transfers. Water quality parameters displayed different spatial and temporal distribution patterns within the watershed. Water quality was improved significantly by the water transfers, especially for sites closer to water intake points. The degree of improvement is positively related to rates of transfer inflow and drainage outflow. The effects differed for different water quality parameters at each site and at different water transfer times. There were notable decreases in NH4 +-N, DO, COD, and CODMn across the entire watershed. However, positive effects on EC and pH were not observed. It is concluded that freshwater transfers from the Yangtze River can be used as an emergency measure to flush pollutants from the Lixia River watershed. Improved understanding of the effects of water transfers on water quality can help the development and implementation of effective strategies to improve water quality within this watershed.  相似文献
