Synopsis We sampled larval, juvenile and adult fishes from littoral-zone areas of a large reservoir (Lake Texoma, Oklahoma-Texas) (1) to characterize environmental factors that influenced fish community structure, (2) to examine how consistent fish–environment relationships were through ontogeny (i.e., larval vs. juvenile and adult), and (3) to measure the concordance of larval communities sampled during spring to juvenile and adult communities sampled at the same sites later in the year. Larval, juvenile and adult fish communities were dominated by Atherinidae (mainly inland silverside, Menidia beryllina) and Moronidae (mainly juvenile striped bass, Morone saxatilis) and were consistently structured along a gradient of site exposure to prevailing winds and waves. Larval, juvenile and adult communities along this gradient varied from atherinids and moronids at highly exposed sites to mostly centrarchids (primarily Lepomis and Micropterus spp.) at protected sites. Secondarily, zooplankton densities, water clarity, and land-use characteristics were related to fish community structure. Rank correlation analyses and Mantel tests indicated that the spatial consistency and predictability of fish communities was high as larval fishes sampled during spring were concordant with juvenile and adult fishes sampled at the same sites during summer and fall in terms of abundance, richness, and community structure. We propose that the high predictability and spatial consistency of littoral-zone fishes in Lake Texoma was a function of relatively simple communities (dominated by 1–2 species) that were structured by factors, such as site exposure to winds and waves, that varied little through time.  相似文献

A survey to determine presence of parasitic and disease organisms and their effect on estuarine populations of striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum), was conducted monthly from May 1972 to May 1973. A total of 514 fish over 1 year old and 140 young-of-the-year were examined using standard necropsy and histological procedures. Other species of fishes were studied to determine the specificity of striped bass parasites and to determine if other fishes were reservoirs for striped bass pathogens. Forty-five species of parasitic organisms from viruses to Metazoa were recognized from striped bass. Heavy infections by some were associated with definite pathological conditions.  相似文献

HDL and apolipoprotein A-I from teleostean fishes demonstrate in vitro activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we purified ApoA-1 from striped bass (Morone saxatilis) plasma and examined its in vitro antibacterial activity against Streptococcus sp., Escherichia coli, and Mycobacterium marinum. In addition, we obtained sequence for a putative striped bass ApoA-1 gene, which when translated contained the identical sequence generated from N-terminal sequencing of the purified ApoA-1. The predicted secondary and tertiary structures contained the characteristic proline residues and high alpha-helical content conserved between mammals and fishes. Purified ApoA-1 exhibited antibacterial activity against the bacteria assayed. Concentrations of 125 microg/mL for E. coli, 250 microg/mL for Streptococcus sp., and 250 microg/mL for M. marinum, inhibited bacterial growth by 50% compared to control. ApoA-1 plasma concentrations in experimental and wild fish ranged from undetectable levels to greater than 5 mg/mL, indicating that striped bass ApoA-1 is an effective antibacterial agent at concentrations below the range of physiological concentrations in striped bass plasma. We therefore conclude that ApoA-1 could play a role in innate defense against bacterial pathogens in striped bass.  相似文献

The time course of osmoregulatory adjustments and expressional changes of three key ion transporters in the gill were investigated in the striped bass during salinity acclimations. In three experiments, fish were transferred from fresh water (FW) to seawater (SW), from SW to FW, and from 15-ppt brackish water (BW) to either FW or SW, respectively. Each transfer induced minor deflections in serum [Na+] and muscle water content, both being corrected rapidly (24 hr). Transfer from FW to SW increased gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity and Na+,K+,2Cl- co-transporter expression after 3 days. Abundance of Na+,K+-ATPase alpha-subunit mRNA and protein was unchanged. Changes in Na+,K+,2Cl- co-transporter protein were preceded by increased mRNA expression after 24 hr. Expression of V-type H+-ATPase mRNA decreased after 3 days. Transfer from SW to FW induced no change in expression of gill Na+,K+-ATPase. However, Na+,K+,2Cl- co-transporter mRNA and protein levels decreased after 24 hr and 7 days, respectively. Expression of H+-ATPase mRNA increased in response to FW after 7 days. In BW fish transferred to FW and SW, gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity was stimulated by both challenges, suggesting both a hyper- and a hypo-osmoregulatory response of the enzyme. Acclimation of striped bass to SW occurs on a rapid time scale. This seems partly to rely on the relative high abundance of gill Na+,K+-ATPase and Na+,K+,2Cl- co-transporter in FW fish. In a separate study, we found a smaller response to SW in expression of these ion transport proteins in striped bass when compared with the less euryhaline brown trout. In both FW and SW, NEM-sensitive gill H+-ATPase activity was negligible in striped bass and approximately 10-fold higher in brown trout. This suggests that in striped bass Na+-uptake in FW may rely more on a relatively high abundance/activity of Na+,K+-ATPase compared to trout, where H+-ATPase is critical for establishing a thermodynamically favorable gradient for Na+-uptake.  相似文献

The striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and its relatives (genus Morone) are of great importance to fisheries and aquaculture in North America. As part of a collaborative effort to employ molecular genetics technologies in striped bass breeding programs, we previously developed nearly 500 microsatellite markers. The objectives of this study were to construct a microsatellite linkage map of striped bass and to examine conserved synteny between striped bass and three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Of 480 microsatellite markers screened for polymorphism, 289 informative markers were identified and used to genotype two half-sib mapping families. Twenty-six linkage groups were assembled, and only two markers remain unlinked. The sex-averaged map spans 1,623.8 cM with an average marker density of 5.78 cM per marker. Among 287 striped bass microsatellite markers assigned to linkage groups, 169 (58.9%) showed homology to sequences on stickleback chromosomes or scaffolds. Comparison between the stickleback genome and the striped bass linkage map revealed conserved synteny between these two species. This is the first linkage map for any of the Morone species. This map will be useful for molecular mapping and marker-assisted selection of genes of interest in striped bass breeding programs. The conserved synteny between striped bass and stickleback will facilitate fine mapping of genome regions of interest and will serve as a new resource for comparative mapping with other Perciform fishes such as European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), and tilapia (Oreochromis ssp.).  相似文献

Distribution of leu-enkephalin-like peptides in the digestive gland of the Japanese scallop has been investigated by means of the indirect immunohistochemical method. The immunoreactive leu-enkephalin is revealed in supranuclear vacuoles of separate large secretory cells. These cells are situated in epithelium of the digestive tubules along the gland periphery. Their number is from 1-3 up to 5-6 per tubue section. The basal part of the cell and small apical vacuoles do not contain any products of the reaction. It is possible that in the bivalve molluscs, as in vertebrates, the leu-enkephalin-immunoreactive elements participate in regulation of digestion.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of a compound diet as a live prey substitute for feeding European sea bass larvae ( Dicentrarchus labrax L.). The effect of a commercial diet (Nippai ML feed) and live prey ( Artemia nauplii) on tryptic enzyme activity, protein content, growth (standard length) and survival rates of sea bass larvae were tested during a 27-day rearing experiment. Sea bass larvae were divided into two groups. The live food group (control group) was fed exclusively on newly hatched Artemia nauplii (Inve AF grade), the test group was fed exclusively with the compound diet from day 15 onwards. As trypsin has been demonstrated to be a useful indicator for evaluating digestibility of food and the nutritional condition of fish larvae, individual tryptic enzyme activity was determined in both feeding groups. Larvae older than 14 days after hatching and fed on live food showed a significantly higher tryptic enzyme activity than larvae fed the compound diet. A similar relationship between tryptic activity and standard length in both test groups was detected only in small larvae (standard length < 7 mm). The usefulness of proteolytic enzyme activity measurements in larval fish research, as well as its use in aquaculture nutrition research, was confirmed. Protein content, increase in length and survival rates of the sea bass larvae were additionally determined in order to evaluate an influence on the diet. The protein content of larvae fed the Artemia nauplii was higher and the growth of larvae fed the compound diet was reduced. Larval mortality was not affected by the diet given.  相似文献

White bass (Morone chrysops), striped bass and their interspecific hybrid are important game fishes, whereas the hybrid striped bass is an important aquaculture species in the US. Numerous state, federal and private hatcheries, therefore, rear these species for stocking purposes as well as for food fish. Although striped bass populations (both wild and domesticated) have been extensively evaluated, relatively little effort has been directed toward the study and improvement of white bass. In this study, we developed SNP resources to examine the genetic relationships among a long‐term domesticated white bass line and five potential founder stocks for selective breeding collected from drainages in Arkansas, Texas and Alabama. Using genotyping‐by‐sequencing, we generated 13 872 genome‐wide SNP loci across the six populations. Stringent filtering of SNP‐calling parameters identified 426 informative SNP loci. Population genetic and structure analyses using these loci revealed only moderate genetic differentiation between populations (global Fst = 0.083) and indicated two major genetic clusters. A final 57‐SNP assay was successfully designed and validated using the MassARRAY system. The developed SNP panel assigned 96 additional genotyped individuals to their population of origin with 100% accuracy. The SNP resources developed in this study should facilitate ongoing efforts in selective breeding and conservation of white bass.  相似文献

Net avoidance rate increases as a function of larval striped bass size. This causes under-estimation of abundance and overestimation of mortality rate. We modeled net avoidance by assuming that fish avoid the net by swimming a radial distance at a right angle to the net axis. This distance, the evasion radius, was estimated by comparing the calculated densities of striped bass larvae from a series of paired tows involving a large and a small net. Iteration and solution models were used to estimate the evasion radius for each millimeter size group of fish in order to estimate the actual density in the environment. Avoidance of the nets increased with fish length. The ratio of actual density in the environment to the measured density in the small net was used to adjust abundances measured in our ichthyoplankton surveys. After adjusting for net avoidance, mortality rates of striped bass larvae from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Estuary were reduced by 10% compared to the unadjusted rates.   相似文献

Mechanisms of copper toxicity and consequences of exposure vary due to uptake route and ionoregulatory status. The goal of this research was to develop a model fish system to assess the influence of different Cu exposure routes (waterborne or dietary) on bioavailability, uptake, and effects in hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops x Morone saxatilis) acclimated to fresh- or saltwater. Initially, hybrid striped bass were exposed to dietary Cu concentrations of 571, 785, and 1013 mug Cu/g, along with a control (approximately 5 microg Cu/g), for 14 days in saltwater. Intestinal and liver Cu accumulated in a dose-dependent manner in fish exposed to increasing levels of dietary Cu. Chronic (42 days) experiments were then conducted to determine sub-lethal effects of aqueous, dietary, and combined aqueous and dietary Cu exposures to both freshwater- and saltwater-acclimated hybrid striped bass. Growth and Cu accumulation in the gill, intestine, and liver were measured. Although no significant effects were observed in fish exposed to waterborne Cu, those exposed through the diet accumulated significant liver and intestinal Cu but showed no significant change in growth. Overall, these results suggest that at the levels tested, exposure to elevated waterborne Cu did not cause significant long-term tissue Cu accumulation, whereas dietary Cu exposure caused significant liver and intestinal Cu accumulation in hybrid striped bass which was comparable in both freshwater and saltwater (15 g/L).  相似文献

Genetic variation has been difficult to detect in striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Therefore, we identified and characterized 13 microsatellite loci to provide additional genetic markers for striped bass. Microsatellites were identified by screening a striped bass genomic library or by using primers developed for European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) microsatellite loci. We found that 6 of the 13 microsatellite loci were polymorphic in DNA samples obtained from wild populations of striped bass. The number of alleles per locus varied from 3 to 12, and the observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.55 to 0.78. These results indicate that microsatellite loci provide more alleles and higher heterozygosities than other genetic markers developed for striped bass. Young of the year striped bass, Morone saxatilis , were exposed to sublethal concentrations of zinc and benzene and infected with larval Anisakis nematodes to determine the effects of these stressors on various physiological parameters. Results indicated that both pollutants and parasites significantly decreased haematocrit values. Parasites alone increased the liver somatic index, decreased haematocrits and, in the initial phase of the experiment, lowered antibody titres. Pollutants alone did not appear to significantly affect antibody titres, nor was there any difference in zinc and benzene uptake in the livers of infected and non-infected fish.  相似文献

Fed and 3-day fasted inland (average mass: 6.97 g) and anadromous (average mass: 6.54 g) striped bass Morone saxatilis fingerlings were held in dipnets above water for 5 min in groups of six. Severity of the response to this handling was measured by whole-body glucose, glycogen, and lactic acid in non-handled bass (considered control level), and then at 30 min, 1, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h recovery. At resting levels, both fed and fasted inland bass showed significantly higher concentrations of the whole body variables than anadromous bass. All four groups of bass showed an increase in lactic acid and glucose immediately after handling, with a concomitant decrease in glycogen. Peak levels of glucose and lactic acid were similar in the four groups. Fasting did not have an effect on the glucose and lactic acid responses, but did affect the glycogen response. The two fasted groups did not return to control glycogen concentrations during the 48-h recovery period. By 48 h, both glucose and lactic acid had returned to control levels. It is concluded that inland and anadromous strains of fingerling striped bass do not differ in their sensitivity to an acute handling stress. Recovery of glycogen energy stores following handling is much better if fish are not fasted before handling.  相似文献

Fine structure of the intestine development in cultured sea bream larvae   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
At hatching, the gut cells of Sparus aurata are quite undifferentiated; however, slight ultrastructural differences can already be distinguished between the presumptive intestinal regions. The hindgut cells are more differentiated than midgut cells and the rectal cells show rather particular ultrastructural features. During days 1 (D1) and 2 (D2) after hatching, major changes occur that lead to full differentiation of the epithelial cells. Shortly before the onset of exogenous feeding (D3), the anterior intestine enterocytes can synthesize lipoprotein particles (LP) from endogenous lipids. The posterior intestine enterocytes show morphological features indicating a role in absorption and intracellular digestion of nutrients, whereas the rectal cells do not. Transient ciliated cells occur at hatching (D0) in the presumptive intestine, except in the caudal rectum, and disappear at the start of the late endotrophic phase about 3 days after hatching (D3). At hatching, very scarce enteroendocrine and leucocyte-like cells are found at the base of the gut epithelium. Their number increases throughout development. At D3 (late endotrophic phase), LP synthesized mainly in the periblast invade the circulatory system, interstitial spaces of the subepithelial tissue and intercellular spaces of the gut epithelium. When the endo-exotrophic phase begins (D4), the enterocytes can absorb exogenous food. Acid phosphatase activity was detected in microvilli, pical vacuoles and Golgi complex in both anterior and posterior enterocytes, as well as in supranuclear vacuoles (SNV) of posterior enterocytes, but not in the apical tubulovesicular system (TVS). During the exotrophic phase, large lipid droplets (LD) are found in anterior enterocytes, and the SNV occupy a large cell volume in posterior enterocytes. LP accumulate first in extracellular spaces and then are transferred to the circulatory system. Mucous and rodlet cells appear in the intestinal epithelium during the exotrophic phase, from D15.  相似文献

Trophic adaptability is a term used to describe feeding flexibility in fishes. Though a useful conceptual starting point, fishes often face constraints on their ability to switch prey that could limit feeding success even when prey switching is observed. We compared striped bass diet compositions summarized from previously published studies in California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta during two time periods (1963–1964 and 2001–2003), which allowed us to evaluate trophic adaptability in San Francisco Estuary striped bass at multiple time scales, ranging from intra-annual to multidecadal. The Delta is the landward region of the San Francisco Estuary; over time between the study periods, the Delta underwent substantial changes in potential prey availability for striped bass. We found evidence for trophic adaptability in San Francisco Estuary (SFE) striped bass at all temporal scales examined. Despite this ability to adapt to changes in prey availability, the relative abundance and carrying capacity of young striped bass have declined. This decline has previously been associated with substantial declines in their dominant historical prey—mysid shrimp. Our results, coupled with these previous findings, indicate that trophic adaptability may have limited usefulness as a conceptual model to predict foraging success when other food web constraints are not considered. We speculate that this is particularly true in highly invaded ecosystems like the San Francisco Estuary because invading species often introduce substantial and permanent changes into food webs, decreasing the likelihood that a predator will find prey assemblages that fully replace historical prey assemblages.  相似文献

Contrary to larval essential fatty acid (EFA) requirements, the effect of dietary neutral lipid supply has been little investigated in marine fish larvae. The present work investigates the effect of feeding Senegalese sole larvae on Artemia enriched with higher or lower doses of lipid emulsion. Two lipid sources - soybean oil and fish oil - were compared. From 16 days after hatching (DAH) onwards, larvae were fed one of four experimental treatments: Artemia enriched on a high or low dose of soybean oil emulsion (HS and LS) or Artemia enriched on a high or low dose of fish oil emulsion (HF and LF). In terms of growth, the dietary lipid level did not have a significant effect while the soybean oil treatments induced a lower growth than the fish oil-enriched Artemia. The fatty acid (FA) composition of the larvae closely reflected the dietary quantitative and qualitative FA profile. Only slight dietary effects were noted in the activity of trypsin, lipase and alkaline phosphatase. A higher amount of lipid droplets was noticeable in the posterior intestine epithelia and in the hepatocytes of larvae fed Artemia enriched with higher lipid doses, while LS-Artemia induced the lower lipid accumulation on the basal zone of the enterocytes, in accordance with the lowest total lipid level measured in this treatment. These results suggest an important effect of dietary total lipid level on lipid accumulation in the enterocytes and on FA absorption. At 33 DAH a tube feeding trial was conducted with 14C-labelled oleic acid (OA) or triolein (TRI), showing that the lower accumulation of lipid droplets in the larvae fed LS was associated with a significantly higher absorption and retention in the gut and body tissues of the TRI label. For OA no significant differences between treatments were found. TRI label was considerably more evacuated than OA, indicating that sole larvae may have a lower capacity to incorporate a triacylglycerol, which needs to be digested. Finally, OA appears to be preferentially utilized for energy production, accumulating more in larval tissues when absorbed in higher amounts.  相似文献

The appearance of large supranuclear vacuoles in the enterocytes of 1- and 4-days post-hatch larvae of turbot and herring, respectively, revealed by the pinocytotic uptake of a fluorescent marker (FITCdextran), indicates a potential for the absorption of dissolved nutrients by the endotrophic stages of marine fish larvae. Ingestion of algal cells by turbot larvae was observed soon after hatching, but low level pinocytotic absorption of algal material was first seen during the second day. More extensive lysis of algal cells and pinocytotic absorption occurred 24 h later. Although lysis of I. galbana was shown to occur at low external osmolarities, it is unlikely that sufficiently low osmolarities present in the hind gut of turbot larvae explained the observed rupture of algae. Other mechanisms for digestion are discussed. In newly hatched herring larvae, algal cells were unable to pass beyond the constriction in the mid-gut caused by the yolk sac. When algal cells were eventually seen to pass into the hind gut, there was no evidence of algal digestion or absorption throughout the remaining endotrophic and early exotrophic stages of herring larvae, although pinocytosis was observed to occur mid-way through the endotrophic stage.  相似文献

Synopsis In a high salinity estuary at North Inlet, South Carolina, co-occurrence and possible competition among adults of four dominant zooplanktivorous fishes were minimized by seasonal adjustments in lateral and vertical distributions as well as in dietary preferences. In winter, Atlantic silversides, Menidia menidia, occupied the entire water column while other planktivores were rare or absent from the estuary, and they consumed large prey such as mysid shrimps and fish larvae. An immigration of bay anchovies, Anchoa mitchilli, in the spring resulted in a redistribution of species with Atlantic silversides shifting to the surface waters and bay anchovies dominating the lower half of the water column. Both fishes consumed mostly copepods in the spring, but each favored a different species. There was little similarity in the large prey items consumed by the two fishes. Striped anchovies, Anchoa hepsetus, arrived in mid-summer and were most abundant at the surface while bay anchovies continued to dominate the bottom waters. Atlantic silversides were rare in all summer collections. The diets of the two anchovies were similar, but vertical separation during the period of maximum zooplankton abundance probably minimized competition. Rough silversides, Membras martinica, which were obligate surface dwellers, shared the upper water column with striped anchovies, but the two species had very different diets during their period of co-occurrence. Although seasonal changes in fish diets reflected shifts in zooplankton composition and all fishes consumed a variety of prey types, preferences for some prey taxa and total avoidance of others were indicated. Electivity indices indicated an especially strong selection for fiddler crab megalopae by all fishes in the summer and fall. All fishes, except rough silversides, which fed almost exclusively on copepods and crab zoeae, consumed large prey items when they were available. Fine scale partitioning of the food resources was apparent in the selection of different copepod and insect species by the fishes. Spatial and temporal separation in the distribution and/or dietary preferences of the zooplanktivores fishes probably reduces the potential for resource competition. Given the high abundances and selectivity of the planktivores, significant impacts on some zooplankton populations probably result.  相似文献

Summary Adult largemouth bass alter habitat use by, and abundances of, other fishes in small streams. Experimental manipulations of bass in natural stream pools (Brier Creek, Oklahoma) showed that responses of other fishes to adult bass were highly dependent on prey size, and that both direct and indirect effects of adult bass influence the distribution and abundance of other stream fishes. Experiments measuring the distributional responses of members of natural pool assemblages to adult bass revealed differences among adult sunfishes, small fishes (16–80 mm SL), and larval sunfish and minnows. Adult sunfishes (Lepomis spp.) did not detectably alter their depth distribution in response to adult bass, but changes in abundance of adult Lepomis on the whole-pool scale appeared positively related to changes in the number of bass. Small fishes tended to occupy shallower water when adult bass were present; changes in abundance of small fishes were negatively related to the number of adult bass. Larval minnows and larval Lepomis occupied primarily deep, mid-regions of pools, and were found only in pools which contained, or had contained, adult bass. A second set of experiments was motivated by censuses of small prairie-margin streams which revealed co-occurrence of larval fishes (of both minnow and sunfish species) and adult largemouth bass. Experimental manipulation of bass and Lepomis larvae on the whole-pool scale showed that adult bass enhanced short-term survival of Lepomis larvae. This effect appears to be an indirect result of habitat shifts by small fishes in response to bass; additional experiments indicated that these small fishes are potentially important predators of larvae. The interactions suggested in this study are analogous to those hypothesized for bass and sunfish in lakes by Werner and Hall (1988).  相似文献
