Populations of the serpentine-endemic nickel-hyperaccumulator Alyssum bertolonii from nine different outcrops were investigated for differences in their nickel tolerance and accumulation levels and shoot:root ratio of nickel concentration.

Plantlets from the different populations were cultivated in hydroponics culture and subjected to a range of nickel concentrations. For populations of this obligate serpentinophyte, the results showed significant intra-specific differences in the degree of both nickel tolerance and nickel accumulation. Among populations there was no correlation between the patterns of shoot and root tolerance, whereas there was a clearly correlated pattern for root and shoot nickel accumulation. The populations of this hyperaccumulator showed a significant variation also in shoot:root ratio in nickel concentration, but there was no relationship between this trait and shoot nickel accumulation levels.

Regarding the still obscure relationship between metal tolerance and hyperaccumulation, our results demonstrated a strong positive linear relationship between these two phenomena in the nickel hyperaccumulator Alyssum bertolonii.  相似文献

There is considerable variation in cannibalism between different species and also between individuals of different species, although relatively little is known about what creates this variation. We investigated the degree of cannibalism in guppy (Poecilia reticulata) populations originating from high and low predation environments in Trinidad, and also how cannibalism was affected by the presence of refuges. Females from two populations were allowed to feed on juveniles from two populations in aquaria trials. The cannibalism was size-dependent and varied depending on both juvenile and female origin. Low predation females were more efficient cannibals and low predation juveniles were better at avoiding cannibalism compared to high predation guppies when no refuges were present. The high predation females were superior cannibals and the high predation juveniles were better at escaping cannibalism than the low predation guppies when refuges were present. We discuss whether the differences in cannibalism and response to refuge addition relate to predation-induced habitat shifts and differences in the guppies’ natural environment.  相似文献

Adaptation to novel environments is a central issue in evolutionary biology. One important question is the prevalence of convergence when different populations adapt to the same or similar environments. We investigated this by comparing two studies, 6 years apart, of laboratory adaptation of populations of Drosophila subobscura founded from the same natural location. In both studies several life‐history traits were periodically assayed for the first 14 generations of laboratory adaptation, as well as later generations, and compared with established, laboratory, control populations. The results indicated: (1) a process of convergence for all traits; (2) differences between the two studies in the pattern and rate of convergence; (3) dependence of the evolutionary rates on initial differentiation. The differences between studies might be the result of the differences in the founder populations and/or changes in the lab environment. In either case, the results suggest that microevolution is highly sensitive to genetic and environmental conditions.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis whether differences between plant populations in root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi could be caused by genetic differentiation between populations. In addition, we investigated whether the response to AM fungi differs between plants from different populations and if it is affected by the soil in which the plants are cultivated. We used Aster amellus, which occurs in fragmented dry grasslands, as a model species and we studied six different populations from two regions, which varied in soil nutrient concentration.We found significant differences in the degree of mycorrhizal colonization of plant roots between regions in the field. To test if these differences were due to phenotypic plasticity or had a genetic basis, we performed a greenhouse experiment. The results suggested that Aster amellus is an obligate mycotrophic plant species with a high dependency upon mycorrhiza. Plant biomass was affected only by soil, and not by population or the interaction between the population and the soil. Mycorrhizal colonization was significantly affected by all three factors (soil, population, interaction of soil and population). Plants from the population originating from the soil with lower nutrient availability developed more mycorrhiza even when grown in soil with higher nutrient availability. The correspondence between mycorrhizal colonization of plants in the field and in both soils in the pot experiment suggests that the observed differences in root colonization have a genetic basis.  相似文献

The ecological trade-off between developmental time and starvation resistance, acting in a heterogeneous environment, can promote the coexistence of competing species. Heterogeneity results from variation in the vegetation that influences both abiotic (e.g. temperature, humidity) and biotic (e.g. fruit availability during the year) aspects of the environment. In this study, we investigated whether differences between collection sites have led to local differentiation of the two life-history traits underlying the coexistence model: developmental time and starvation resistance. Drosophila were collected from four collection sites, ranging from grassland to secondary forest, along a transect of 15 km. The microclimatic and vegetation differences among these collection sites were considerable. For developmental time, different species showed similar genetic responses to the (habitat) differences between the different collection sites. The shortest developmental times were found in the secondary forest populations and the agricultural area populations, the longest in the grassland populations, and the forest edge populations were intermediate. However, there was no correlation between the habitat ranking based on disturbance and canopy cover, and the ranking of the developmental times. The parasite communities of two molly species, the sexual Poecilia latipinna and the clonal Poecilia formosa , were investigated in four populations using a novel method applicable under field conditions. In two native populations from south Texas and two introduced populations from central Texas, four species of microparasites and eight species of macroparasites were recorded. Virtually no differences in the parasite diversity and species composition could be detected between the populations. Mollies from south Texas had a higher individual parasitization index of macroparasites. There was a negative correlation between the relative number of oocytes in gravid females and their individual macroparasite load.  相似文献

This paper examines humeral cross-sectional properties in two different samples of later medieval date: a group of blade-injured males from the sites of Towton, North Yorkshire, and Fishergate in the City of York, England, and a comparative group of nonblade-injured males also from the site of Fishergate in York. CT image slices were taken of the humeral shaft at 20%, 35%, 50%, 65%, and 80% from the distal end to investigate population differences in levels and patterns of mechanical loading. Bilateral asymmetry is investigated and comparisons are made with different populations of varying activity levels. Architectural changes such as humeral torsion are also investigated to determine the relationship between architectural changes and biomechanical efficiency. Results show significant differences in diaphyseal robusticity between the Towton sample and the comparative population, as well as significant differences in diaphyseal shape both between limbs within the Towton sample and between blade-injured samples. Population differences were also identified in the level of bilateral asymmetry, further demonstrating the differences in movement and activity patterns both between and within samples. These variations may relate to distinctive, more strenuous weapon use and differences in strenuous movement patterns in the two groups.  相似文献

Few studies of natural populations have investigated how phenotypic variation across populations relates to key factors in the environment and landscape structure. In the blue tits of southern France, inter-population differences in reproductive life-history traits (e.g. laying date and clutch size) are small, whatever the timing of maximum caterpillar availability, a key factor for offspring survival in tits. These small differences are attributed to gene flow between local populations occupying different habitat types. In contrast, in blue tits on the island of Corsica, we noted large differences in reproductive life-history traits between two populations, where each population is synchronized with the peak-date of caterpillar abundance. These occur over a short geographical distance (25km). Considering our study within a framework of long-term population studies in tits, our results support the hypothesis that different blue tit populations on Corsica show adaptive differences in life-history traits, and suggest that landscape structure at a small spatial scale can have profound effects on adaptive between-population differentiation in life-history traits that are closely linked with fitness.  相似文献

We investigated allozyme variation and phenotypic variation in leaf shape in 15 populations of the shrub Hippocrepis emerus (Leguminosae) from the three isolated, regional populations in Scandinavia and analysed patterns of differentiation and the hierarchical structuring of diversity on different geographic scales There are pronounced geographic differences between the Norwegian and Swedish isolates of the species and most of the polymorphic allozyme loci show reciprocal fixation in the two isolates The Scandinavian populations of H emerus are not only disjunct on a macrogeographic scale but also show considerable disjunction within regions Within the Oland regional population, a central group of populations shows low levels of Inter-population differentiation the Gotland group of populations is related to this core group of Oland populations The geographically marginal populations on Oland are spatially isolated and show a higher degree of divergence between populations than does the central group of Oland populations We interpret genetic divergence between the marginal populations in terms of genetic drift - as a result of historical fluctuations in habitat availability and population size  相似文献

Using multilocus DNA fingerprinting with phage M13 DNA as a probe, we have investigated a heterogeneous group of four human populations from Eastern Europe and Northeastern Asia. These populations belong to two language families: Indo-European (Eastern Slavonic branch: Russians, Belarussians) and Altaian (Turkic branch: Yakuts). The experimental results were treated by different statistical techniques: cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling, and multiple correspondence analysis. Coefficients of genetic differentiation were estimated using similarity indices and heterozygosities. The results of our study demonstrated similarity of Belarussian populations and significant differences between the group of Slavonic populations and Yakuts.  相似文献

Genetic diversity within populations of Fusarium pseudograminearum isolated from wheat grains from the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan was investigated. Three restriction enzymes (EcoRI, HaeIII, and PstI) were used to carry out restriction analysis of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) intergenic spacer region (IGS region) and eight primers were used to generate inter-simple sequence-repeat (ISSR) molecular markers. Our study indicated substantially high genetic diversity within these two populations, but low genetic differentiation and frequent gene flow among populations. The IGS data showed no genetic distinction between the two Alberta populations and only minor genetic differentiation between the Saskatchewan and Alberta populations. Analysis of molecular variance indicated that most genetic variability resulted from differences among isolates within populations. Multilocus linkage disequilibrium analysis suggested a panmictic population genetic structure and the occurrence of significant recombination in F. pseudograminearum. Regular gene flow and random mating between isolates from different populations could result in novel genotypes with both improved pathological and biological traits.  相似文献

Extracts of the digestive diverticula of more than 300 individuals from four geographically separated populations of the European oyster, Ostrea edulis L. have been examined by electrophoresis for esterase and phosphoglucose isomerase polymorphisms. Three regions of esterase variability have been detected in the electrophoretograms. It is inferred that the variants in two of these regions are governed by two co-dominant alleles at each of two loci. Two phenotypes of phosphoglucose isomerase, which is inferred to be a dimeric enzyme encoded by two alleles at a single locus, have been observed. Allele frequencies and phenotype distributions are compared in the four populations. It is concluded that the populations differ genetically at the loci investigated, the magnitude of the differences being generally greatest between different 'physiological races'.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Cannibalism was investigated in the wolf spider Pardosa monticola (Clerck) using spiders collected from four populations with varying densities, inhabiting two different coastal dune habitat types. Sampled individuals were paired randomly and tested immediately for their cannibalism propensity.
2. The occurrence of cannibalism was found to be influenced by the size (cephalothorax width) of both the smaller and the larger spider of a pair. Larger size differences enhanced cannibalism.
3. Cannibalism rates were not significantly different in spiders from high-density compared with low-density populations. Cannibalism rates showed, however, large variability between habitat types, with higher rates in spiders from dune grasslands than from dune slacks. This is suggested to result from differences in prey availability throughout the growing season between both habitat types.
4. Different size classes of spiders did not use different microhabitats, indicating that microhabitat segregation as a cannibalism-avoidance behaviour is absent in this species.  相似文献

The hypothesis of environmentally related life history variations between two Rutilus rutilus caspicus populations was investigated by comparing Gomishan and Anzali populations along the southern shores of the Caspian Sea. The roach growth rate in the Anzali wetland was higher than in the Gomishan wetland. There were significant differences in growth patterns between males and females from both wetlands, however the sex ratios were not significantly different. Fecundity or reproductive investment (Gonadosomatic index – GSI) of the Gomishan roach was significantly more than the Anzali roach. In both areas the absolute fecundity was significantly positive correlated to age and total length.  相似文献

The water flea Daphnia has the capacity to respond rapidly to environmental stressors, to disperse over large geographical scales, and to preserve its genetic material by forming egg banks in the sediment. Spatial and temporal distributions of D. magna have been extensively studied over the last decades using behavioral or genetic tools, although the correlation between the two has rarely been the focus. In the present study, we therefore investigated the population genetic structure and behavioral response to a lethal threat, ultraviolet radiation (UVR), among individuals from two different water bodies. Our results show two genetic populations with moderate gene flow, highly correlated with geographical location and with inheritable traits through generations. However, despite the strong genetic differences between populations, we show homogeneous refuge demand between populations when exposed to the lethal threat solar UVR.  相似文献

Data on serum protein levels of four populations from Rwanda were analyzed by multivariate statistical methods to assess their utility as an anthropological tool. These populations consisted of two ethnic groups in two different environments. Seven proteins were considered in the analysis. The total concentration of proteins is intermediate between Italian levels and those of the Binga pygmies of the Republic of Central Africa (RCA). Discrimination between the populations was possible with a 25% misclassification. The major principal components can be interpreted from a medical viewpoint, and show significant differences between the populations.  相似文献

The distribution of C-glycoflavones has been examined in the leaves of plants from five diploid and 12 tetraploid populations of Gibasis schiedeana. Five different chromatographic patterns were found; one occurs only in a single population of diploid plants, two were found in seven populations of tetraploids and the other two in the remaining plants from both diploid and tetraploid populations. Flavonoids were also investigated in three different types of artificially produced triploids. The effects of the changes in ploidy, which are accompanied by Robertsonian fusion and variation in the number of B chromosomes as contributory factors in the observed differences in flavonoid patterns are discussed.  相似文献

The use of enzymatic techniques to characterize rumen metabolism was investigated. Assays were developed to estimate the activities of 14 enzymes in cell-free extracts of microorganisms collected from rumen contents of cows fed two diets, selected to produce widely different proportions of fermentation end products. The results reflected the differences between the two diets in metabolic potential, fermentation patterns, and microbial populations. The differences between the diets in the relative activities of succinic dehydrogenase and fumaric reductase, for example, indicated a shift in the microbial population favoring organisms of the Viellonella alcalescens type on the concentrate diet. The data presented indicate that, if employed carefully, enzymatic criteria can be utilized effectively in studies of rumen metabolism.  相似文献

Growth and development rates often differ among populations of the same species, yet the factors maintaining this differentiation are not well understood. We investigated the antipredator defences and their efficiency in two moor frog Rana arvalis populations differing in growth and development rates by raising tadpoles in outdoor containers in the nonlethal presence and absence of three different predators (newt, fish, dragonfly larva), and by estimating tadpole survival in the presence of free-ranging predators in a laboratory experiment. Young tadpoles in both populations reduced activity in the presence of predators and increased hiding behaviour in the presence of newt and fish. Older tadpoles from the slow-growing Gotland population (G) had stronger hiding behaviour and lower activity in all treatments than tadpoles from the fast-growing Uppland population (U). However, both populations showed a plastic behavioural response in terms of reduced activity. The populations differed in induced morphological defences especially in response to fish. G tadpoles responded with relatively long and deep body, short tail and shallow tail muscle, whereas the responses in U tadpoles were often the opposite and closer to the responses induced by the other predators. U tadpoles metamorphosed earlier, but at a similar size to G tadpoles. There was no evidence that growth rate was affected by predator treatments, but tadpoles metamorphosed later and at larger size in the predator treatments. G tadpoles survived better in the presence of free-ranging predators than U tadpoles. These results suggest that in these two populations, low growth rate was linked with low activity and increased hiding, whereas high growth rate was linked with high activity and less hiding. The differences in behaviour may explain the difference in survival between the populations, but other mechanisms (i.e. differences in swimming speed) may also be involved. There appears to be considerable differentiation in antipredator responses between these two R. arvalis populations, as well as with respect to different predators.  相似文献
