Individual variation in two species of host plants (thistle,Cirsium kamtschaticum, and blue cohosh,Caulophyllum robustum) of the herbivorous ladybird beetleEpilachna pustulosa was examined under laboratory conditions for their acceptability to adult beetles as a food resource, for adult preference and for larval performance. When clones of these plants were subjected to non-choice tests using posthibernating female beetles, there was found to be significant intraspecific variation among clones in terms of their acceptability, but interspecific variation was not detected. Significant intraspecific as well as interspecific variation were frequently detected in the two host plants when clones of these plants were subjected to choice tests using posthibernating female beetles; the magnitude of interspecific plant variation for beetle preference is not necessarily larger than that of intraspecific plant variation. Individual variation across plant species with respect to beetle larval performance was also significant. A positive correlation between adult preference and larval performance is suggested across the two taxonomically remote host plant species, thistle and blue cohosh, although this needs further investigation.  相似文献

Phytophagous specialists among insects occasionally accept plants they do not or only rarely utilize under natural conditions. This non‐host acceptance could represent an initial stage in host‐range evolution. Here, we examined adult acceptance of and larval survivorship on a non‐host plant – wild thistle, Cirsium kamtschaticum Ledeb. (Asteraceae) – for two geographically separate populations of the phytophagous ladybird beetle Henosepilachna yasutomii Katakura (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), which normally utilizes blue cohosh, Caulophyllum robustum Maxim. (Berberidaceae), in the wild. The two beetle populations showed lower acceptance of and survivorship on the non‐host plant (thistle) than on the normal host plant (blue cohosh). Furthermore, they differed significantly in their responses to thistle but not to blue cohosh. Even for the beetle population that more readily accepted thistle as adults, acceptance was moderate and the eclosion rate was low, indicating reduced performance on the non‐host plant. Although studies have infrequently focused on non‐host acceptance, this is likely common in phytophagous specialists and thus is a potentially important evolutionary factor, as it may determine the future direction of food‐range evolution.  相似文献

The relationships between egg predation of an herbivorous lady beetle Epilachna niponica (Lewis ) and its predator, the earwig Anechura harmandi (Burr ), were examined in both time and space. In spite of little annual, changes in egg densities, egg mortality due to predation varied considerably. There was no, clear relationship between the earwig density and the proportionate predation over the five years. The seasonal occurrence of earwig nymphs on thistle plants, however, was closely synchronized with that of egg predation. Predator attacks on the beetle occurred in a time-restricted manner. Thus, later cohorts mostly escape from heavy predatory pressure. No spatially density-depent egg predation was detected at the level of either thistle plants or thistle patches. Furthermore, there was no indication of aggregative behaviour of the earwig in response to local egg density. The earwig density was more likely to be associated with particular localities with sandy deposits available for its nest site.  相似文献

Introduced species have been linked to declines of native species through mechanisms including intraguild predation and exploitative competition. However, coexistence among species may be promoted by niche partitioning if native species can use resources that the invasive species cannot. Previous research has shown that some strains of the aphid Aphis craccivora are toxic to a competitively dominant invasive lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis. Our objective was to investigate whether these aphids might be an exploitable resource for other, subdominant, lady beetle species. We compared larval development rate, survival, and adult weight of five lady beetle species in no‐choice experiments with two different strains of A. craccivora, one of which is toxic to H. axyridis and one that is nontoxic. Two lady beetle species, Cycloneda munda and Coleomegilla maculata, were able to complete larval development when feeding on the aphid strain that is toxic to H. axyridis, experiencing only slight developmental delays relative to beetles feeding on the other aphid strain. One species, Coccinella septempunctata, also was able to complete larval development, but experienced a slight reduction in adult weight. The other two lady beetle species, Hippodamia convergens and Anatis labiculata, demonstrated generally low survivorship when consuming A. craccivora, regardless of aphid strain. All five species showed increased survival and/or development relative to H. axyridis on the “toxic” aphid strain. Our results suggest that this toxic trait may act as a narrow‐spectrum defense for the aphids, providing protection against only some lady beetle enemies. For other less‐susceptible lady beetles, these aphids have the potential to provide competitive release from the otherwise dominant H. axyridis.  相似文献

Ecological speciation is a process by which reproductive isolation evolves as the result of divergent natural selection between populations inhabiting distinct environments or exploiting alternative resources. Ecological hybrid inviability provides direct evidence for ecological speciation. To detect ecological hybrid inviability, we examined survival rates to the second instar of F1 hybrids and backcross hybrids in a pair of sympatric phytophagous ladybird beetles, Henosepilachna niponica Lewis and Henosepilachna yasutomii Katakura (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae: Epilachninae), reared on their respective host plants, thistle [Cirsium alpicola Nakai (Asteraceae)] and blue cohosh [Caulophyllum robustum Maxim. (Berberidaceae)], and on a common food plant, Japanese nightshade [Solanum japonense Nakai (Solanaceae)]. Hybrid larvae reared on leaves of the Japanese nightshade always had high rates of survival, irrespective of the crossing type of their parents, suggesting a lack of intrinsic hybrid inviability between the two species. In contrast, survival rates on thistle and blue cohosh varied greatly. On blue cohosh, the survival rate of F1 hybrids was nearly as high as that of H. yasutomii, but on thistle, survival was significantly lower than of H. niponica. Survival rates of backcross hybrids on the two host plants were intermediate between those of the parents, showing a reversed rank order of different types of backcross hybrids on the two food plant species. These results suggest that ecological hybrid inviability exists between H. niponica and H. yasutomii, although the two species do not show intrinsic hybrid inviability. Thus, our study supports the hypothesis that H. niponica and H. yasutomii underwent ecological speciation by divergent selection.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Eucalyptus globulus Labill. exhibited consistent intraspecific variation in oviposition choice by Mnesampela privata (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in field surveys of host plants that had been designated, based on the prior season's defoliation levels, as resistant or susceptible to M. privata. At both field sites significantly fewer egg batches were found on resistant compared to susceptible trees. 2 In cage bioassays we demonstrated a significant oviposition preference by M. privata, with over two‐fold greater number of egg batches laid on foliage sprigs from susceptible compared to resistant trees. Despite differences in tree oviposition choice, we found no evidence in the field or the laboratory of adult females adjusting egg batch size in accordance to oviposition preference. 3 Caged larval survival, development times and pupal weight did not vary significantly between resistant and susceptible trees. Similarly, in a laboratory feeding experiment, neonates utilized resistant and susceptible foliage equally. 4 Larval mortality in the field attributed to natural enemies did not vary significantly between resistant and susceptible trees, nor did the percentage of Telenomus sp. parasitism of M. privata eggs within a batch and batches per tree. 5 Failure to associate either larval performance or natural enemy efficacy with the observed intraspecific variation in E. globulus susceptibility to M. privata oviposition indicates that some other unidentified factors drive the evolution of host selection for oviposition.  相似文献

Genetic and environmental factors causing intraspecific variation of the thistle Cirsium kamtschaticum Ledeb. as a host plant of the phytophagous ladybird Epilachna pustulosa Kôno were investigated through simple food-choice tests and rearing of larvae. Two thistle clones (T1U1 and T4H2) were used, originally growing approximately 12 km apart. A previous study showed that adult female ladybirds preferred T1U1 to T4H2, and that larval performance was better on T1U1, when leaves from the clones in situ were examined. The two clones retained their characteristics with respect to beetle preference after transplantation into a common garden. However, the difference between T1U1 and T4H2 with respect to larval performance was reduced after the transplantation. When leaves from shoots of T1U1 exposed to different sunlight intensities were offered, adult female ladybirds did not show obvious preferences. Larval eclosion rates increased significantly with the increase in leaf sunlight intensity exposure. These results suggest strongly that both genetic and environmental factors are involved in interclonal variation of thistle quality in beetle preference and/or performance. It is suggested that the quality of thistle leaves for larval performance is largely affected by environmental factors, while leaf quality for beetle preference may be determined strictly by genetic factors. Under certain conditions, E. pustulosa females may behave maladaptively, preferring plants not appropriate for larval growth, or not choosing plants appropriate for the larval growth.  相似文献

Local adaptation to different host plants is important in the diversification of phytophagous insects. Thus far, much evidence of the local adaptation of insects with respect to host use at the physiological level has been gathered from systems involving less mobile insects and/or divergent hosts such as plants belonging to different families or genera. On the other hand, the prevalence of such local adaptation of insects with moderate or high dispersal ability to the intraspecific variation of herbaceous hosts is largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the occurrence and degree of local adaptation of the herbivorous ladybird beetle Henosepilachna pustulosa (Kôno) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to its primary host, the thistle Cirsium boreale Kitam. (Asteraceae), through reciprocal laboratory experiments using beetles and thistles from three locations with a range of approximately 200 km. Concerning the larval developmental ability, obvious patterns of local adaptation to the thistles from respective natal locations were detected, at least in some combinations of beetle populations. Similar tendencies were detected concerning adult feeding acceptance, although the statistical support was somewhat obscure. Overall, our results indicate that the degree of local adaptation of insect species with moderate dispersal ability to conspecific herbaceous hosts is occasionally as strong as that involving less mobile insects and/or heterospecific hosts, indicating the potential of such cryptic local adaptation to promote ecological/genetic differentiation of phytophagous insect populations.  相似文献

Demographic attributes of the adults of an introduced herbivorous lady beetleEpilachna niponica (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were investigated from 1975 to 1981 in the Botanical Garden of Kyoto University. Population growth rate varied from 4.8 to 16.8 throughout the study period. Fecundity and mortality in the late larval period contributed most to annual changes in the population growth rate. Population growth rate was negatively correlated with the density of overwintering adults. Adult survival from emergence to the reproductive season, which varied from 0.03 to 0.36 throughout the study, was almost completely determined by survival during the pre-hibernation period. Adult survival to the preproductive season changed in a size- and sex-dependent manner. Larger adults survived better than smaller individuals; male-biased mortality occurred from adult emergence to the reproductive age. Severe intraspecific competition among late instar larvae due to host plant defoliation produced a higher proportion of small-sized adults, resulting in lower adult survival to hibernation. The introduced population had a higher population growth rate and a lower adult survival to the reproductive season than the source population.  相似文献

1. A series of experiments was conducted to measure the impact of plant genotype, plant growth rate, and intraspecific competition on the oviposition preference and offspring performance of the host races of Eurosta solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae), a fly that forms galls on Solidago altissima and Solidago gigantea (Asteraceae). Previous research has shown that both host races prefer to oviposit on their own host plant where survival is much higher than on the alternate host plant. In this study, neither host race showed any relationship between oviposition preference and offspring performance in choosing among plants of their natal host species. 2. The larval survival of both host races differed among plant genotypes when each host race oviposited on its natal host species. In one experiment, altissima host race females showed a preference among plant genotypes that was not correlated with offspring performance on those genotypes. In all other experiments, neither the altissima nor gigantea host race demonstrated a preference for specific host plant genotypes. 3. Eurosta solidaginis had a preference for ovipositing on rapidly growing ramets in all experiments, however larval survival was not correlated with ramet growth rate at the time of oviposition. 4. Eurosta solidaginis suffered high mortality from intraspecific competition in the early larval stage. There was little evidence, however, that females avoided ovipositing on ramets that had been attacked previously. This led to an aggregated distribution of eggs among ramets and strong intraspecific competition. 5. There was no interaction among plant genotype, plant growth rate, or intraspecific competition in determining oviposition preference or offspring performance.  相似文献

"选择-表现"假说认为,成虫应该选择有利于子代发育的高品质寄主,但在寄主选择中,除了寄主品质外,其他因素也可能影响寄主选择决策。寄主选择研究通常以成虫为对象,而对那些初龄幼虫选择寄主的寄生性昆虫很少关注。以1龄幼虫积极搜寻寄主的寄生性花绒寄甲为模式生物,采用双选试验设计,观察了花绒寄甲初孵幼虫在不同体重青杨天牛幼虫之间、在已被寄生与健康的黄粉虫蛹之间的寄生选择性;然后采用回归设计,观察了花绒寄甲寄生若干不同体重的青杨天牛幼虫后的发育表现。研究结果表明,花绒寄甲1龄幼虫对体型较大的青杨天牛幼虫的选择偏好显著大于对体型较小的寄主幼虫的选择,选择大体型幼虫的比值比是选择小体型幼虫的4.55倍;对已被寄生的寄主黄粉虫蛹的选择偏好显著大于对健康寄主蛹的选择,选择已被寄生寄主的比值比是选择健康寄主的12.57倍。寄生青杨天牛幼虫的花绒寄甲幼虫发育历期平均为11.49 d、蛹历期为26.67 d、幼虫发育至成虫的羽化率50%,这些发育表现与寄生时青杨天牛幼虫的体重没有显著关系。但刚羽化寄甲成虫体重与寄生时寄主的体重存在显著的正直线关系:寄生时的寄主体重每增大0.01 g,羽化出的寄甲成虫体重增大近0.08%;方差分析寄甲成虫体重在不同寄主体重水平之间的差异表明,从体型较大寄主中羽化的寄甲成虫体重显著大于从体型较小寄主中羽化的成虫。研究结果说明,花绒寄甲初孵幼虫在寄主选择决策时,在寄主体型大小与被寄生状态之间可能采取折衷对策,而且对体型大小不同的寄主选择与子代发育适合度表现存在一致性,从而支持"选择-表现"假说。  相似文献

Life history traits of the phytophagous ladybird beetle Epilachna yasutomii were compared between a nonpest population feeding on wild blue cohosh and a pest population feeding on cultivated solanaceous crops, mainly potato. Newly emerged adults of the nonpest population entered diapause early in midsummer when blue cohosh withered, while adults of the pest population were found in tomato and eggplant fields until late autumn. The pest population had larger females, a higher population growth rate, a shorter larval developmental period, and reduced longevity of overwintered females, compared with the nonpest population. ANOVA indicated that all these life history traits were influenced by the food plant, and that the number of eggs laid per female and the longevity of overwintered females were also affected by the population type. These findings suggest that the life history pattern of E. yasutomii changed to high fecundity with a short life span from low fecundity with a long life span as a result of the host shift from wild blue cohosh to cultivated solanaceous crops. 1. Within the host range of herbivorous insects, performance hierarchies are often correlated with relatedness to a primary host plant, as plant traits are phylogenetically conserved. Therefore, it was hypothesised that differences in herbivore performance on closely related plant species are due to resistance traits that vary in magnitude, rather than in the nature of the traits. 2. This hypothesis was tested by manipulating putative resistance traits of three congeneric thistle species (Cirsium arvense, Cirsium palustre, and Cirsium vulgare) and assessing the performance of the oligophagous, leaf‐feeding beetle, Cassida rubiginosa. Measurements were done of survival, weight gain, and development time of the beetle on its primary host, C. arvense, and two alternative hosts under low and high nutrient availability, and on shaved and unshaved leaves. 3. Survival of C. rubiginosa was strongly dependent on plant species with final mean survival rates of 47%, 16%, and 8% on C. arvense, C. palustre, and C. vulgare, respectively. Survival was primarily explained by leaf trichome densities, and to a lesser extent by specific leaf area. Leaf flavonoid concentrations did not explain differences in beetle survival, and there were no differences in beetle weight gain or development time of individuals that survived to adulthood. 4. No beetles survived on unshaved (hairy) C. vulgare plants, but manipulating leaf trichome densities of the thistle species by shaving the leaves moderated the plant‐specific resistance, and equalised the survival rates. Survival of C. rubiginosa on alternative congeneric hosts was explained by a common physical resistance trait that varied in magnitude.  相似文献

Larvae of the leaf beetle Chrysomela lapponica derive a defensive secretion from salicyl glucosides found in the host plant Salix borealis. This secretion protects beetle larvae from some natural enemies, but does not appear to repel parasitoids. We tested the hypothesis that the fly parasitoid Megaselia opacicornis (Diptera, Phoridae) uses the larval defensive secretion of Ch. lapponica in its search for prey. In the field, nearly 30 times more M. opacicornis individuals were caught on leaves coated with sticky resin next to a source of secretion than on control leaves. In the laboratory, M. opacicornis females laid six times more eggs next to a cotton ball soaked in secretion than next to one soaked in water. Fly females also lay more eggs on prey rich in larval secretion than on secretion-poor prey. In the field, removal of defensive secretion from beetle prepupae resulted in a 7.5-fold reduction of oviposition by fly females. Parasitoids were nearly twice as likely to lay eggs on prepupae, rich in secretion, as on pupae, which contain little secretion. Fly offspring reared from beetle prepupae reached a 21% larger body mass than those reared from pupae. Finally, M. opacicornis females avoided host prepupae already parasitized by the tachinid fly Cleonice nitidiuscula, which possess little secretion. These experiments indicate that host plant-derived defensive secretions are used by this parasitoid for host location. Adaptation of parasitoids to use defensive secretions of hosts may selectively favor an increase in diet breadth in specialist herbivores.  相似文献

The oviposition-preference–offspring-performance hypothesis predicts that female insects should prefer to deposit clutches on or in hosts that maximize offspring performance. An important assumption behind this prediction is that female fitness is tightly correlated with the fitness of any one offspring. In this study, we evaluate offspring performance in the walnut fly, Rhagoletis juglandis Cresson (Diptera: Tephritidae), in relation to a previously described oviposition preference for previously exploited host fruit. In particular, we examined how superparasitism of walnut hosts influences offspring survival and weight at pupation under field conditions. We found that superparasitism was common and that increases in larval densities within fruit were associated with reduced larval survival and weight at pupation. In a laboratory experiment, female size was correlated with lifetime fecundity. In this system, oviposition preference is therefore negatively, not positively, correlated with offspring performance. We argue that patterns of female preference in this system reflect direct benefits to females that are traded off against costs in terms of offspring fitness. Because female fitness is a product not only of offspring quality but also of the total number of offspring produced, female walnut flies may be optimizing their fitness by producing many less fecund offspring. Studies examining the preference-performance hypothesis should consider the reproductive conflicts between parents and offspring as potential factors that influence the congruence between parental preference and offspring performance.  相似文献

Convergent lady beetles, Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville, are a popular choice for aphid control in North America. An unidentified microsporidium was found in H. convergens adults that were purchased from a commercial insectary in 2004. This study examined egg cannibalism and egg predation as a means of horizontal transmission of the unidentified microsporidium among H. convergens larvae and three coccinellid species found in Nova Scotia: Coccinella septempunctata (seven-spotted lady beetle), C. trifasciata perplexa (three-banded lady beetle), and Harmonia axyridis (multicolored Asian lady beetle). The microsporidium was transmitted with 100% efficiency when first instars fed on microsporidia-infected eggs. Mean spore count data from smear preparations of infected beetles suggest that the infection was as heavy in C. trifasciata perplexa (a native coccinellid) (11.2 ± 0.96 spores/100 μm2) as it was in H. convergens (the natural host) (12.8 ± 1.16) but lighter in the introduced species C. septempunctata (7.5 ± 0.65) and H. axyridis (0.8 ± 0.11). For all of the beetle species examined, larval development was significantly longer for microsporidia-infected individuals than for their uninfected cohorts. The microsporidium had no effect on larval mortality. Based on the results of this study, field-collected H. convergens should be examined for microsporidia and uninfected individuals should be used to rear individuals for release in biological control programs. However, this is unlikely to happen because H. convergens are relatively easy and inexpensive to collect from their overwintering sites for redistribution.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Oviposition site selection is crucial for the reproductive success of herbivorous insects. According to the preference–performance hypothesis, females should oviposit on host plants that enhance the performance of their offspring. More specifically, the plant vigour hypothesis predicts that females should prefer large and vigorously growing host plants for oviposition and that larvae should perform best on these plants.
2. The present study examined whether females of the monophagous leaf beetle Cassida canaliculata Laich. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) prefer to oviposit on large host plant individuals of the meadow clary and whether large host plants are of higher nutritional quality than small host plants. Subsequently, it was tested whether the female preference correlates with offspring performance and survival.
3. In the field, females preferred large host plant individuals for oviposition and host plant quality, i.e. leaf nitrogen content, was significantly higher in leaves of large than of small host plants.
4. In the laboratory, larval development time was shorter on leaves of large host plant individuals than on small host plant individuals, but this could not be shown in the field.
5. However, a predator-exclusion experiment in the field resulted in a higher survival of larvae on large host plants than on small host plants when all predators had free access to the plants. On caged host plants there was no difference in survival of larvae between plant size categories.
6. It is concluded that females of C. canaliculata select oviposition sites that enhance both performance and survival of their offspring, which meets the predictions of the plant vigour hypothesis.  相似文献

According to the enemy‐free space hypothesis (EFS), parasites and predators create a selective force for a specialization on a host that assures better protection against natural enemies than other potential hosts. Few studies have found support for EFS and none of them have covered the whole larval period in natural conditions. I studied the growth and survival of lichen‐feeding moth larvae on five lichen species with and without their natural enemies in natural conditions covering the whole larval period. All the three following EFS predictions gained support. First, natural enemies caused significant mortality of larvae. Second, when natural enemies were present, larval survival was highest on preferred Ramalina lichens. Third, larvae attained higher mass on non‐preferred Parmelia sulcata than on Ramalina species, indicating fecundity cost to feed on Ramalina species instead of P. sulcata. EFS for C. lichenaria larvae on Ramalina species is likely a consequence of shrubby appearance of Ramalina species which provide better larval protection from predation than other hosts.  相似文献

The effects of citrus limonoids, applied topically to potato (Solanum tuberosum L. var. Katahdin) foliage, on Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) (Say) (Chrysomelidae) larval development, growth, and survival were quantified in laboratory assays and a small-plot field test. In laboratory assays, survival, development rate, and body weight decreased with increasing limonoid concentration, however these measures of larval response did not significantly differ among varying periods of limonoid exposure (three, six, or nine days). Significant limonoid application concentration and frequency effects on survival, development rate, and defoliation were observed in the field test. These results indicate the potential utility of lethal and non-lethal effects of citrus limonoids for management of the Colorado potato beetle.  相似文献

We examined the influence of proteinase inhibitors on digestive enzymes and development of oriental beetle,Exomala orientalis Waterhouse, European chafer,Rhizotrogus majalis (Razoumowsky),Phyllophaga white grub,Phyllophaga anxia (LeConte), cranberry root grub,Lichnanthe vulpina (Hentz), Japanese beetle,Popillia japonica Newman, Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera castanea (Arrow) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), and the black cutworm,Agrotis ipsilon (Rottemburg) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). We demonstrated that all species within our test group had alkaline midguts that contained proteinase activity that could be inhibited,in vitro with serine proteinase inhibitors. Our data suggests that host range may influence the susceptibility to non-host inhibitors. Chronic ingestion of the serine proteinase inhibitor, Kunitz-soybean trypsin inhibitor (STI), significantly reduced proteolytic activityin vivo in those species with relatively specialized feeding habits (i.e., cranberry root grub, Japanese beetle, Asiatic garden beetle, and black cutworm). Chronic ingestion of STI also resulted in reduced larval growth and delayed pupation for black cutworm, and elevated larval mortality for Japanese beetle. However, chronic ingestion of STI did not influence larval survival for those species with relatively generalized feeding habits (i.e., oriental beetle, European chafer). Based on these results, we propose mechanistically-based criteria for selecting proteinase inhibitors for phytochemical defense against herbivorous insects.  相似文献
