The essential oils (EOs) isolated from the leaves and twigs of Juniperus excelsa M.Bieb . growing wild in Lebanon were characterized, and their antimicrobial activity and antiradical capacity were evaluated. The EOs were obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger‐type apparatus and characterized by GC and GC/MS analyses. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by determining minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against a Gram‐positive and a Gram‐negative bacterium, a yeast, and a dermatophyte with the broth microdilution technique. A total of 28 constituents was identified and accounted for 90.1 and 95.6% of the twig and leaf EO composition, respectively. Both EOs were essentially composed of monoterpene hydrocarbons (46.7 and 59.6% for twig and leaf EOs, resp.) and sesquiterpenes (39.4 and 32.1%, resp.). The main components were α‐pinene, α‐cedrol, and δ‐car‐3‐ene. The J. excelsa EOs did not show any antiradical potential, but revealed interesting in vitro antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Trichophyton rubrum (MICs of 64 and 128 μg/ml, resp.). The three major compounds were tested separately and in combination according to their respective amounts in the oil. δ‐Car‐3‐ene was the most active component and is undoubtedly one of the constituents driving the antifungal activity of J. excelsa essential oil, even though synergies are probably involved. 相似文献

The chemical compositions of 25 Corsican Limbarda crithmoides ssp. longifolia essential oils were investigated for the first time using GC‐FID, GC/MS, and NMR analyses. Altogether, 65 compounds were identified, accounting for 90.0–99.3% of the total oil compositions. The main components were p‐cymene ( 1 ; 15.1–34.6%), 3‐methoxy‐p‐cymenene ( 4 ; 11.8–28.5%), 2,5‐dimethoxy‐p‐cymenene ( 5 ; 5.9–16.4%), thymol methyl ether ( 6 ; 1.3–14.9%), α‐phellandrene ( 2 ; 0.9–11.9%), and α‐pinene ( 3 ; 0.2–13.4%). The chemical variability of the Corsican oil samples was studied using multivariate statistical analysis, which allowed the discrimination of two main clusters. A direct correlation between the water salinities of the plant locations and the chemical compositions of the L. crithmoides essential oils was evidenced. Indeed, essential oils rich in 1 (30.4–34.6%) were found in samples growing in the wetlands of the southern oriental coast, which exhibit high salinity levels (24.4±0.2–33.9±0.2 ppt), and essential oils with lower contents of 1 (15.1–27.3%) were isolated form samples growing in the wetlands of northern Corsica, which exhibit lower salinity levels (10.90±0.20–15.47±0.15 ppt). The antioxidant potential of L. crithmoides essential oil was also investigated, by assessing the DPPH.‐ and ABTS.+‐scavenging activities and the reducing power of ferric ions, and was found to be interesting. Moreover, using bioassay‐guided fractionation of the essential oil, a higher antioxidant activity was obtained for the oxygenated fraction and both ester and alcohol subfractions. 相似文献

The composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of different parts of Litsea cubeba, including roots, stems, leaves, alabastra (flower buds), flowers, and fruits, were investigated by GC (RI) and GC/MS. The antimicrobial activity of the oils was assessed with disc diffusion and microbroth dilution assays. The results showed large variations in the composition among the different oils. The major components in the oils from roots and fruits, from stems, leaves, and alabastra, and from flowers were citral B (neral), β‐phellandrene, and β‐terpinene, respectively. The inhibition zone (DD) and MIC values for the bacterial strains tested, which were all sensitive to the essential oil of L. cubeba, were in the range of 10.1–35.0 mm and 100–1000 μg/ml, respectively. Hence, the oils of the various parts showed moderate activity against the tested bacteria. This investigation showed that the antibacterial activity of L. cubeba was attributed to the essential oils, thus they can be a potential medicinal resource. 相似文献

The chemical compositions of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Croatian Eryngium alpinum L. and E. amethystinum L. were characterized by GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses. The main components identified were the sesquiterpene β‐caryophyllene (19.7%) in the oil of E. amethystinum and the oxygenated sesquiterpene caryophyllene oxide (21.6%) in the oil of E. alpinum. Overall, 32 and 35 constituents were detected in the essential oils of the aerial parts of E. alpinum and E. amethystinum, respectively, representing 92.4 and 93.1% of the total oil compositions. The essential oils of both Eryngium species were proved to reduce the number of lesions in the local host Chenopodium quinoa infected with cucumber mosaic virus and an associated satellite. This is the first investigation of antiphytoviral activity of essential oils of Eryngium species. 相似文献

Two chitosan extracts were prepared by chemical and enzymatic treatment of Ganoderma lucidum mushroom, as an alternative source to crustacean shells. The molecular weight of the enzymatic extract was lower than that of the chemical one and of shrimp chitosan, as determined by viscosity measurements. Characteristic signals were identified in the 1H‐NMR spectra and high deacetylation degree indicated good physico‐chemical properties for both mushroom chitosan extracts. The scavenging capacity of mushroom chitosan extracts was moderate against the synthetic radicals of 2,2′‐azinobis(3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), but higher values were observed for the enzymatic extract, compared to the chemical extract and shrimp chitosan. In vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated in L929 mouse fibroblast cell lines and the results of MTT assay showed good cytocompatibility in the tested range of concentrations. The growth of Gram‐positive bacteria was inhibited more than Gram‐negative bacteria in the presence of mushroom chitosan extracts, in particular by the chemical one, indicating their efficiency as antimicrobial agents. All these results strengthen the evidence of mushroom polysaccharide preparations availability for biomedical applications. 相似文献

The hydrodistilled essential oils obtained from aerial flowering parts of Teucrium stocksianum ssp. stocksianum (TSS) and T. stocksianum ssp. gabrielae (TSG) from Iran were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. The oil analysis of two subspecies led to the identification of 65 compounds that accounted for 93.3 and 95.1% of the total oil compositions, respectively. Sesquiterpenoids (52.9%) constituted the main compounds in the essential oil of TSS represented mainly by cis‐sesquisabinene hydrate (12.0%), followed by epi‐β‐bisabolol (6.6%), guaiol (5.4%), and β‐eudesmol (4.4%), whilst monoterpenoids (61.2%) were found to be the major components of the oil of TSG, represented by α‐pinene (23.0%), β‐pinene (13.0%), myrcene (6.3%), and sabinene (6.3%). The principal component in both subspecies, TSS and TSG, was α‐pinene (22.0 and 23.0%, resp.) and β‐pinene (6.5 and 13.0%, resp.). epi‐α‐Cadinol, myrcene, and sabinene, which were detected as principal compounds of TSG, were characterized in lower amounts (<1.5%) in the oil of TSS. Seven components were identified in the oil of TSS corresponding to 25.9% of total oil, which were totally absent in the oil of TSG, of which cis‐sesquisabinene hydrate (12.0%), guaiol (5.4%), and β‐eudesmol (4.4%) were in considerable amounts. Salvia tomentosa essential oils from Greece were studied for the first time here. The oils from five populations growing in Mediterranean pine forests on the island of Thassos (northern Aegean Sea) and from 14 populations situated in deciduous forests in Thrace (northeastern Greek mainland) were investigated. Their essential‐oil contents ranged from 1.1 to 3.3% (v/w, based on the dry weight of the plant material). The populations from Thassos had high contents of α‐pinene (18.0±2.9%), 1,8‐cineole (14.7±3.0%), cis‐thujone (14.0±6.9%), and borneol (12.8±2.2%) and smaller amounts of camphene, camphor, and β‐pinene, whereas the populations from Thrace showed high α‐pinene (16.7±4.0%), β‐pinene (22.8±4.5%), camphor (18.3±4.3%), and camphene (10.3±2.4%) contents, much lower 1,8‐cineole and borneol amounts, while cis‐thujone was completely lacking. The comparison of the present results with published data showed that oils having cis‐thujone as one of the main compounds were reported for the first time here. Multivariate statistical analyses indicate that the observed essential‐oil variation was related to geographical and environmental factors. 相似文献

The chemical composition of the essential oils of nine taxa from seven sections of Hypericum L. (Guttiferae; H. perforatum subsp. perforatum, H. perforatum subsp. veronense, H. calycinum, H. montanum, H. richeri subsp. richeri, H. hyssopifolium, H. hirsutum, H. hircinum subsp. majus, and H. tetrapterum) occurring in central Italy (Appennino Umbro‐Marchigiano) was analyzed by GC/FID and GC/MS. A total of 186 compounds were identified in the different species and subspecies, accounting for 86.9–92.8% of the total oils. The major fraction of the oil was always represented by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (30.3–77.2%), while quantitative differences occurred between the other classes of volatiles depending on the taxa considered. Chemical composition of the nine Hypericum entities with respect to the taxonomical classification was discussed. Essential oils obtained from six taxa, i.e., H. perforatum subsp. perforatum, H. perforatum subsp. veronense, H. calycinum, H. richeri subsp. richeri, H. hirsutum and H. tetrapterum, were also tested for their antimicrobial properties against five different microbial strains by the broth‐microdilution method, and they were found to have significant activity (expressed as MIC) on B. subtilis, moderate activity on C. albicans and S. aureus, and weak activity on E. coli and E. faecalis, the most active being those from H. hirsutum, H. richeri subsp. richeri, and H. tetrapterum. 相似文献

The essential oils of 14 species and hybrids, respectively, of the genus Mentha were examined for their antioxidant capacity in the ABTS (2,2′‐azinobis(3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid)) assay and in a lipid‐peroxidation (LPO) assay. The ABTS.+‐scavenging capacity of pure essential‐oil components and mixtures of them was also tested. In both assays, Mentha×dumetorum (classification not fully confirmed), Mentha suaveolens, and Mentha×villosa (classification not fully confirmed) showed the highest antioxidant capacity, which was ascribed to the components germacrene D, piperitone oxide, and piperitenone oxide. The high antioxidant activity in the LPO assay of the two hybrids Mentha×gracilis and, to a lower degree, of Mentha×dalmatica (classification not fully confirmed) was ascribed to their high contents of cis‐ocimene and β‐caryophyllene. Of the pure components tested (germacrene D, piperitone oxide, and piperitenone oxide were not tested, as not commercially available), only cis‐ocimene showed a distinct antioxidant effect, whereas dihydrocarvone and linalool had pro‐oxidant effects in the ABTS assay. 相似文献

The present work focused on the evaluation of the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the phenolic‐rich fraction (ItJ‐EAF) obtained from cauline leaves collected in January from Isatis tinctoria L. (Brassicaceae) growing wild around Acireale (Sicily, Italy). The total phenolic, flavonoid, and condensed tannin contents of the fraction were determined spectrophotometrically, whereas the phenolic profile was assessed by HPLC‐PDA/ESI‐MS analysis. A total of 20 compounds were positively identified and twelve out of them were never previously reported in I. tinctoria leaves. The fraction exhibited good radical scavenging activity in DPPH test (IC50 = 0.6657 ± 0.0024 mg/ml) and reducing power (3.87 ± 0.71 ASE/ml), whereas, it neither showed chelating activity nor was able to counteract H2O2 induced oxidative stress damage in Escherichia coli. The antiproliferative effect was evaluated in vitro on two human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell lines (CAL‐62 and 8505C) by MTT assay. At the highest tested concentration ItJ‐EAF significantly reduced (80%) the growth of CAL‐62 cells. No cytotoxicity against Artemia salina was observed. It can be concluded that I. tinctoria cauline leaves represent a source of phenolic compounds which could be potentially used as chemopreventive or adjuvant agents against cancer. 相似文献

The composition of 21 essential‐oil samples isolated from Helichrysum italicum collected in seven locations of Elba Island (Tuscany, Italy), characterized by different soil types, during three different periods (January, May, and October 2010) was determined by GC‐FID and GC/EI‐MS analyses. In total, 115 components were identified, representing 96.8–99.8% of the oil composition. The oils were characterized by a high content of oxygenated monoterpenes (38.6–62.7%), while monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons accounted for 2.3–41.9 and 5.1–20.1% of the identified constituents, respectively. The main oxygenated derivatives were nerol (2.8–12.8%) and its ester derivative neryl acetate (5.6–45.9%). To compare the chemical variability of the species within Elba Island and between the island and other localities within the Mediterranean area, studied previously, multivariate statistical analysis was performed. The results obtained showed a difference in the composition of the essential oils of H. italicum from Elba Island, mainly due to the environment where the plant grows, and, in particular, to the soil type. These hypotheses were further confirmed by the comparison of these oils with essential oils obtained from H. italicum collected on other islands of the Tuscan archipelago. 相似文献

Argania spinosa includes two varieties, var. apiculata and var. mutica. These argan varieties were introduced into Tunisia in ancient times and are actually cultivated in some botanic gardens. Little is known about the chemical differentiation among these argan varieties. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the fatty‐acid composition, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and the antioxidant and α‐amylase‐inhibitory activities of leaf, seed, and pulp extracts of both argan varieties harvested during the months of January to April. The fatty‐acid distribution was found to depend on the argan variety, the plant organ, and the harvest time. Significant variations in the phenolic contents were observed between the investigated varieties as well as between leaves, pulps, and seeds of each variety. As expected, phenolic compounds were found to be contributors to the antioxidant and α‐amylase‐inhibitory activities of both argan varieties. The chemical differentiation observed among the two argan varieties, based mainly on the fatty‐acid composition, might have some chemotaxonomic value. 相似文献

Here we report, for the first time, the results of detailed GC and GC/MS analyses of the essential oil of a rare taxon in Serbia, Hypericum elegans Stephan ex Willd . One hundred and sixty two constituents identified accounted for 98.6% of the oil. The major components of the oil were undecane (31.9%), α‐pinene (16.7%), nonane (6.1%), bicyclogermacrene (5.8%), 2‐methyloctane (3.7%), and germacrene D (3.6%). Non‐terpenoids as chemotaxonomic markers constituted the main fraction of H. elegans oil, whereby n‐alkanes were the most abundant contributors of this fraction. Based on these results and previously published ones, we performed an intrasectional multivariate statistical comparison of corresponding essential‐oil chemical compositions. Principal component analysis (PCA) and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) of the data on the volatile profiles of section Hypericum taxa revealed that H. elegans either represents an oil chemotype of its own (AHC) or could be considered related to H. perforatum (PCA). 相似文献

Three (9βH)‐pimaranes, 1, 2 , and 3 , and two (9βH)‐17‐norpimaranes, 4 and 5 , belonging to a rare compound class in nature, were obtained from the tubers of Icacina trichantha for the first time. Compound 1 is a new natural product, and 2 – 5 have been previously reported. The structures were elucidated based on NMR and MS data, and optical rotation values. The absolute configurations of (9βH)‐pimaranes were unambiguously established based on X‐ray crystallographic analysis. Full NMR signal assignments for the known compounds 2, 4 , and 5 , which were not available in previous publications, are also reported. All five isolates displayed cytotoxic activities on MDA‐MB‐435 cells (IC50 0.66–6.44 μM ), while 2, 3 , and 4 also exhibited cytotoxicities on HT‐29 cells (IC50 3.00–4.94 μM ). 相似文献

The enzymatic synthesis of N‐acetyl‐lactosamine (LacNAc) by the transgalactosylation of N‐acetyl‐D ‐glucosamine (GlcNAc), catalyzed by the β‐galactosidase from Bacillus circulans (BcβGal), was studied in hydro‐organic media, starting from o‐nitrophenyl‐β‐D ‐galactopyranoside (oNPG) as a galactosyl donor. Thermal stability and synthesis activity of BcβGal were shown to depend on the organic solvent polarity, characterized by its Log P value. BcβGal was thus most stable in 10% (v/v) t‐BuOH, an organic solvent found to have a stabilizing and/or weakly denaturing property, which was confirmed for high t‐BuOH concentrations. In the same manner, the optimal synthesis yield increased as the Log P value of the organic solvent increased. The best results were obtained for reactions carried out in 10% (v/v) pyridine or 2‐methyl‐2‐butanol, which gave 47% GlcNAc transgalactosylation yield based on starting oNPG, of which 23% (11 mM; 4.3 g/L) consisted in LacNAc synthesis. Furthermore, it was also established that both the GlcNAc transgalactosylation yield and the enzyme regioselectivity depended on the percentage of organic solvent used, the optimal percentage varying from 10 to 40% (v/v), depending on the solvent. This phenomenon was found to correlate mainly with the thermodynamic activity of water (aw) in the aqueous organic solvent mixture, which was found to be optimal when close to 0.96, whatever the organic solvent used. Finally, this study highlighted the fact that the regioselectivity of BcβGal for 1‐4 linkage formation could be advantageously managed by controlling the aw parameter. © 2010 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol.
