The majority of authors consider Festuca jubata Lowe as an endemic species common to Madeira and the Azores. Saint-Yves proposed that F. jubata was an Azorean endemic and described a geovicarious taxon in Madeira: F. filiformis C. Sm. ex Link in Buch ssp. mandonii St.-Yves. We undertook a complete bibliographical revision of the taxonomy, nomenclature, and chorology of F. jubata s.l. , and contrasted it with morphological and anatomical studies performed on samples from the Azores and Madeira. Azorean plants usually identified as F. jubata had a character combination distinct from that of those with a Madeiran provenance. Saint-Yves' proposal of two independent taxa was correct, but he erroneously considered F. jubata as an Azorean endemic because the name F. jubata was based on Madeiran plants. Elaphoglossum section Lepidoglossa in Africa, Macaronesia (Azores and Madeira), the mid‐Atlantic Ocean Islands (St Helena, Gough and Tristan da Cunha Island groups) and the southern Indian Ocean Islands (Marion and Prince Edward Islands) is reviewed. Fifteen Elaphoglossum species from this region are ascribed to the section. The hydrozoan family Aglaopheniidae (Cnidaria) is widespread worldwide and contains some of the most easily recognizable hydroids because of their large colony size and characteristic microscopic structure. The systematics of the group has, however, been controversial and dedicated molecular analyses are lacking. We therefore analysed existing and new 16S rRNA sequences of Aglaopheniidae, in a total of 98 16S sequences corresponding to 25 putative species (25 nominal and three undescribed) from seven genera. The monophyly of the subfamilies Gymnangiinae and Aglaopheniinae, and tribes Aglaopheniini and Cladocarpini were not verified with 16S sequence data. The genera Gymnangium and Aglaophenia can only be considered valid if both Gymnangium gracicaule and Aglaophenia latecarinata are removed from their respective genera. The phenotypically similar Cladocarpus and Streptocaulus are probably monophyletic and clearly distinct genetically. The genus Lytocarpia may be polyphyletic. The nominal species Aglaophenia pluma, Aglaophenia tubiformis, and Aglaophenia octodonta are probably conspecific, as are also the species Aglaophenia acacia and Aglaophenia elongata. The 16S data revealed the existence of two potentially unnamed species of Aglaophenia respectively from the Azores and Madeira. The phylogeographical structure of the taxa with the greatest representation of haplotypes from the north‐east Atlantic and Mediterranean, revealed the influence of Mediterranean waters in Madeira and the Azores, and gene flow between deep waters of the Mediterranean and Atlantic. The last glaciations in Europe may have caused genetic bottlenecks but also high intraspecific haplotype diversity. We analyzed the genetic structure and relationships of house mouse (Mus musculus) populations in the remote Atlantic archipelago of the Azores using nuclear sequences and microsatellites. We typed Btk and Zfy2 to confirm that the subspecies Mus musculus domesticus was the predominant genome in the archipelago. Nineteen microsatellite loci (one per autosome) were typed in a total of 380 individuals from all nine Azorean islands, the neighbouring Madeiran archipelago (Madeira and Porto Santo islands), and mainland Portugal. Levels of heterozygosity were high on the islands, arguing against population bottlenecking. The Azorean house mouse populations were differentiated from the Portuguese and Madeiran populations and no evidence of recent migration between the three was obtained. Within the Azores, the Eastern, Western, and Central island groups tended to act as separate genetic units for house mice, with some exceptions. In particular, there was evidence of recent migration events among islands of the Central island group, whose populations were relatively undifferentiated. The Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, originally from South America, is now a major pest in many parts of the world with Mediterranean-like climates. Earlier research indicated that southwestern European L. humile populations are segregated into two distinct supercolonies, the ‘Main’ supercolony extending through Portugal, Spain, southern France, and Italy, and the ‘Catalonian’ supercolony in eastern Spain. Both supercolonies are unicolonial, with workers showing no aggression towards members of the same supercolony, but severe aggression towards members of the other supercolony. Here we evaluated the behavioral relationships among non-native L. humile populations on the Macaronesian islands of Madeira and the Azores and non-native populations in southwestern Europe. We conducted aggression assays among L. humile workers from Madeira, the Azores, and the two southwestern European supercolonies. We found no aggressive interactions among any combination of workers from Madeira, the Azores, and the Main supercolony. However, workers from Madeira and the Azores always fought aggressively with workers from the Catalonian supercolony. Thus, the populations of L. humile in Madeira and the Azores appear to be unicolonial and act as if they belong to the Main supercolony of southwestern Europe. This set of geographically separated but mutually compatible supercolonies, which we term a ‘metacolony,’ appears to descend from one supercolony. Historical evidence suggests that the first L. humile population in the greater Mediterranean region was established in Madeira and that propagules from the dominant supercolony in Madeira gave rise to the dominant supercolonies in to other parts of the region.  相似文献

Shallow subtidal macroalgal communities in the North-eastern Atlantic archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canaries and Cape Verde) were studied in order to identify their spatial organization patterns and the main drivers of change. Fifteen islands and 145 sites across 15º of latitude and 2850 km were sampled. We found high spatial variability across the scales considered (archipelago, island and site). The structure of macroalgal communities differed among archipelagos, except between Madeira and the Canaries, which were similar. Across a latitudinal gradient, macroalgal communities in the Azores were clearly separated from the other archipelagos; communities in Madeira and the Canaries occupied an intermediate position, while those in Cape Verde appeared at the opposite end of the gradient. In the Azores, species with warm-temperate affinities dominated communities. Cape Verde communities were, in contrast, dominated by tropical taxa, whereas in the subtropical Canaries and Madeira there was a mixture of species with colder and warmer affinities. Apart from crustose coralline algae, the Dictyotales were the group with greatest cover; larger and longer-lived species were progressively replaced by short-lived species along a latitudinal gradient from north to south. The perennial species Zonaria tournefortii dominated the sea-bottom in the Azores, the semi-perennial Lophophora variegata in the Canaries, the filamentous algae in Madeira and the ephemeral Dictyota dichotoma in Cape Verde. We hypothesized that the differences among archipelagos could be explained by synergies between temperature and herbivory, which increased in diversity southwards, especially in Cape Verde. This was supported by the predominance of non-crustose macroalgae in the Azores and of crustose macroalgae in Cape Verde, as would be predicted from the greater herbivore activity. At the scale of islands and sites, the same set of environmental variables drove differences in macroalgal community structure across all the Macaronesian archipelagos.  相似文献

Maturation experiments of volcanic mud samples with mineral water were followed up during 120 days at constant room temperature (20ºC) to track geochemical modifications induced by the process and, eventually, the development of diatom communities. Different abiotic conditions were tested during the experiments. Mud samples were collected in Azores and Madeira Archipelagos (Portugal) and the biological inoculum was collected from the edge of a fumarole from Azores (Portugal). The assemblages of diatoms were dominated by Nitzschia species both in the inoculum and on maturated muds. Although one of the samples from São Miguel island (Azores) was dominated by Nitzschia cf. thermalis var. minor, the mud sample from Porto Santo (Madeira) allowed the development mainly of Nitzschia communis during maturation experiments. Associations between chemical composition and samples’ mineralogical signature were established by cluster analysis. Slight enrichment on Na+ and Ca2+ was detected in samples after maturation and exchangeable cations content was improved by the process. This research includes a multidisciplinary approach that contributes to the understanding of interactions between volcanic substrates and specific diatom species and geochemical modifications induced by maturation in volcanic materials.  相似文献

This paper provides comparative information on the reproductive biology of the alfonsino, Beryx splendens Lowe, 1834, species with commercial interest in the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. A total of 846 individuals from Azores (14.0–42.0 cm fork length), 621 from Madeira (17.2–50.0 cm fork length) and 643 from the Canaries (18.2–38.9 cm fork length) were used for the study. The alfonsino is gonochoric with no evidence of sexual dimorphism. Females are more abundant than males; this dominance probably reflects certain differences in the spatial distribution and/or the catchability of males and females in the Macaronesian archipelagos. The spawning season was distinct for the three Macaronesian areas, with an observed North–South variation in the reproductive period: September–March in the Azores, March–June in Madeira and July–September in the Canary Islands. The size at sexual maturity estimated for Madeira and the Canary Islands is similar (32 and 30 cm fork length, respectively), while for the Azores it is reached at smaller length (23 cm fork length). The differences observed in the size at sexual maturity can be explained by the different exploitation levels in each archipelago. Life‐history parameters of the alfonsino suggest that this species has a specialistic life‐history strategy and fisheries based on this species are more susceptible to growth overfishing and population depletion.  相似文献

【目的】探索国家二级保护野生药用植物蛇足石杉内生细菌的物种和生理活性多样性,发现并收集药用植物内生菌资源。【方法】分别从四川和福建等不同生态环境采集蛇足石杉植株,运用纯培养手段,对经过表面消毒处理的蛇足石杉样品进行内生菌的分离、培养;根据菌株16S r RNA基因信息,计算从蛇足石杉不同区系分离获得的内生细菌间的Jaccard指数、多样性指数、优势度指数与均匀度指数等,分析内生菌物种多样性;应用6种筛选模型对分离得到的内生菌进行生理活性测定,初步评价蛇足石杉内生细菌的生理活性多样性和药用价值。【结果】从12份蛇足石杉植物样品中分离获得356株内生菌菌株,菌株16S r RNA基因序列信息显示,分离得到的蛇足石杉内生细菌隶属于放线菌门、厚壁菌门和变形菌门等3个门的26个科、41个属,来源于蛇足石杉地上和地下部位的菌株数目、多样性指数等无明显差异。从中发现了分属于拟无枝酸菌属(Amycolatopsis)、Angustibacter、节杆菌属(Arthrobacter)、短小杆菌属(Curtobacterium)、Frondihabitans、Glaciihabitans、Jatrophihabitans、Luteimicrobium、Massilia、Naumannella和Tardiphaga等11个属的11个潜在新物种,以及皮生球菌科(Dermacoccaceae)的1个新属。在抗菌活性筛选中,356株纯培养物抗粪肠球菌、抗肺炎克雷伯菌、抗耻垢分枝杆菌以及抗水稻白叶枯病菌的阳性率分别是9.0%、1.4%、2.2%、0.8%;抑制SS04生长的降血脂药物筛选模型上的阳性率是8.1%;抗HIV-1的初筛阳性率为4.5%。共计74株菌在一个或多个筛选模型中显示出活性,初筛总阳性率为20.8%。【结论】蛇足石杉内生细菌具有丰富的物种多样性和生理活性多样性,是进一步发掘新型天然产物的理想菌种资源。  相似文献

The special features of the intertidal ecosystems of remote islands are reviewed briefly before focusing on the littoral zone of Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira and Canaries). Distribution patterns are briefly compared with other European shores. Species missing from the Azores compared with Madeira, the Canaries and continental European shores are listed. The degree of genetic differentiation within and amongst selected important species of gastropods (Patella spp.) and barnacles (Chthamalus spp.) in Macaronesia is reviewed. The role of isolated islands in allopatric speciation of these organisms is discussed in relation to dispersal. Possible threats to the populations and communities of rocky shores in Macaronesia are considered in the context of the endemic nature of certain species. The importance of studies of basic ecology and genetics to inform resource management and conservation is highlighted. Future research directions are indicated, emphasizing the usefulness of Macaronesia as a model system to explore speciation in intertidal organisms.  相似文献

The common shallow water species of sea anemones (Actiniaria) and tube anemones (Ceriantharia) of the Azores are listed. Eight species of sea anemones are mentioned, the species Cereus pedunculatus and Sagartia affinis being new records for the archipelago. Both species of Ceriantharia, namely Arachnanthus nocturnus and Pachycerianthus solitarius, are recorded from the Azores for the first time. Island canaries (Serinus canaria) are characterised as a species living exclusively on North Atlantic islands, mainly on the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands. Although they are very common in their habitats, their behaviour and breeding system has only recently been studied systematically. To advance the understanding of their ecology and to see if the rather isolated archipelagos are already promoting a genetic differentiation, we investigated their phylogeographic relationship as revealed by mtDNA sequences of the cytochrome b gene and investigated whether this measure corresponds to morphological characteristics within the islands. Genetic distances were very low throughout the distribution range of the species. Although the variation of genetic distances within the population of Pico (Azores) was larger than that on Madeira and Canary Islands, the genetic distances between island populations were very low throughout which prevented a clear phylogeographic differentiation. Moreover, morphological measurements did not reveal a consistent pattern to reliably separate the populations, although the measures of beak length and body weight revealed a clear island-specific differentiation. These data lead to the assumption that the colonisation of the Atlantic islands by the canaries occurred very recently, while there is no persisting gene flow between the populations.  相似文献

Two hundred and four rabbits from 8 Macaronesian islands (Pico, San Jorge, San Miguel, Terceira, and Flores from Azores Archipelago; Tenerife and Alegranza from Canary Islands; and Madeira from Madeira Archipelago) were examined for helminth parasites between 1995 and 2000. Three species of cestodes, Taenia pisiformis (larvae), Andrya cuniculi, and Mosgovoyia ctenoides, and 5 species of nematodes, Trichuris leporis, Graphidium strigosum, Trichostrongylus retortaeformis, Passalurus ambiguus, and Dermatoxys hispaniensis, were identified. Only 3 species (M. ctenoides, T. retortaeformis, and P. ambiguus) were regularly distributed over the 3 archipelagos. Taenia pisiformis was not collected in Madeira, nor was A. cuniculi in the Azores and G. strigosum in the Canary Islands. Trichuris leporis and D. hispaniensis were only found in Madeira. Significant differences in the general prevalence of the nematodes G. strigosum and T. retortaeformis were detected between Azores and Madeira. The prevalence of T. retortaeformis differs significantly between the Azores and the Canaries and that of P. ambiguus was higher in Madeira than in Azores and Canaries. The helminth richness found in the wild rabbit in these Macaronesian archipelagos was very low compared with the Palearctic helminth fauna of this host. The wild rabbit was introduced from the Iberian Peninsula into different Macaronesian islands. Helminths introduced with Oryctolagus cuniculus into these islands also are commonly found in Iberian wild rabbits, which are excellent colonizers, as demonstrated in this study.  相似文献

A rapid qualitative HPLC-UV-MS method was developed for the detection of huperzine A in Lycopodiaceae species. HPLC coupled with mass spectrometry experiments allowed the identification of the alkaloid and enabled targeted analysis of complex matrices such as herbal extracts. Huperzine A was detected by single ion monitoring of the pseudomolecular ion [M + H]+ at m/z 243.2. The alkaloid was also detected on TLC in a bioautographic enzyme assay with acetylcholinesterase to show the activity of the compound. Four Lycopodiaceae species collected in Switzerland were tested by these methods and Huperzia selago (L.) Bernh. ex Schrank et Martius was the only species found to contain huperzine A.  相似文献

Analysis of biogeographic affinities is a key tool to establish and improve the resolution of hierarchical biogeographic systems. We describe patterns of species richness of the marine macroalgal flora across Lusitanian Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, the Salvage Islands and the Canary Islands), and test (i) whether such differences are related to differences in proximity to the nearest continental shore and size among islands. We also explore biogeographic affinities in the composition of macroalgal assemblages (= presence/absence of each taxon in multivariate datasets) to determine (ii) whether each archipelago is a biogeographic unit within this ecoregion and (iii) whether patterns in assemblage composition are related to proximity (i.e. distances) among islands. Presence/absence matrices were created to test and visualize multivariate affinities among archipelagos. A total of 872 taxa were compiled. Species richness peaked at the Canary Islands and decreased towards the Azores; the pattern matched a progressive increase in distance from the nearest continental shores, matching the classical island biogeography theory. Intra-archipelago differences in species richness were largely related to variations in island size. Biogeographic similarities among archipelagos were hierarchically structured. Madeira and the Salvage Islands constituted one biogeographic unit. Floras from the Azores, Madeira and the Salvage Islands were barely separable from each other, but were different from those at the Canary Islands. Such biogeographic similarities among islands were negatively correlated with the geographical separation (i.e. distances) among them. Proximity to nearby continental shores, in conjunction with large- and meso-scale oceanographic patterns, seems to interact to create patterns in richness and composition of algal assemblages across Lusitanian Macaronesia.  相似文献

The genetic and morphological structure of Patella candei in the Macaronesian Islands were studied by allozyme electrophoresis and multivariate analysis (canonical discriminant analysis), respectively. Sixteen enzymes, yielding 21 resolvable loci were analysed for all populations using the BIOSYS-1 program. A disjunct distribution of genetically similar populations from the Azores and Selvagens Islands ( P.c. gomesii – P.c. candei ) was found, which showed two diagnostic loci with P.c. ordinaria from Madeira. Patella c. crenata from the Canaries showed an intermediate composition of 92% P.c. ordinaria and 8% P.c. gomesii–P.c. candei . Hypotheses are presented to explain the evolution of the genetic and morphological structure of P.c. candei in the Macaronesian Islands, including the interaction of natural processes and human intervention. Patella c. candei is considered to represent the ancestral form. An extinction or near extinction event may have happened in Madeira after which P.c. ordinaria arose, carrying only a small part of the diversity of the original form, which evolved in isolation. The ancestral form, P.c. candei , was depleted by human extraction from high levels of the shore in the Azores and Canaries. Patella c. gomesii , from the Azores evolved by phyletic evolution, colonizing low levels of the shore, leaving only a relict population in the Selvagens Islands, that remained almost free of human exploitation. Patella c. crenata is a hybrid with a high degree of introgression to P.c. ordinaria , which is maintained by the forces of human extraction at high-tide levels and by intraspecific competition at low-tide levels.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 341−353.  相似文献
