Hemodynamic imaging results have associated both gender and body weight to variation in brain responses to food-related information. However, the spatio-temporal brain dynamics of gender-related and weight-wise modulations in food discrimination still remain to be elucidated. We analyzed visual evoked potentials (VEPs) while normal-weighted men (n = 12) and women (n = 12) categorized photographs of energy-dense foods and non-food kitchen utensils. VEP analyses showed that food categorization is influenced by gender as early as 170 ms after image onset. Moreover, the female VEP pattern to food categorization co-varied with participants' body weight. Estimations of the neural generator activity over the time interval of VEP modulations (i.e. by means of a distributed linear inverse solution [LAURA]) revealed alterations in prefrontal and temporo-parietal source activity as a function of image category and participants' gender. However, only neural source activity for female responses during food viewing was negatively correlated with body-mass index (BMI) over the respective time interval. Women showed decreased neural source activity particularly in ventral prefrontal brain regions when viewing food, but not non-food objects, while no such associations were apparent in male responses to food and non-food viewing. Our study thus indicates that gender influences are already apparent during initial stages of food-related object categorization, with small variations in body weight modulating electrophysiological responses especially in women and in brain areas implicated in food reward valuation and intake control. These findings extend recent reports on prefrontal reward and control circuit responsiveness to food cues and the potential role of this reactivity pattern in the susceptibility to weight gain.  相似文献

Background: Men and women differ markedly with regard to their use of, and responses to, methamphetamine (MA) and related amphetamines. However, these gender differences oftentimes are given only a cursory consideration in the analyses of these MA effects. Objective: In this brief review, we summarize the data on gender differences in various parameters of MA use and responses. Such information on the pattern of male versus female differences in the use and responses to this psychostimulant can aid in tailoring gender-dependent treatment strategies. Methods: English-language articles were identified from MEDLINE as well as from reference lists of identified articles for the years 1966 to 2007. Search terms included various combinations of men/male, women/female, methamphetamine, and gender/sex differences. Only studies with human subjects were reviewed. Results: Women tend to begin MA use at earlier ages, appear more dependent on MA, but also respond better to treatment than do men. MA use appears to be associated with depression in women, and women seem more committed to MA, whereas men are more likely to use other drugs in the absence of access to MA. Female MA abusers had both larger volumes within the corpus callosum and more hyperperfused regions in the parietal and occipital areas of the brain, along with more genetic alterations but less MA-induced toxicity. Amphetamine-stimulated dopamine release was greater in men. Conclusions: When considered in total, women seem more dependent on and committed to MA but show diminished (amphetamine-stimulated) dopamine responses and a decreased degree of toxicity, as indicated by a lower incidence of emergency department-related deaths involving MA. A pervasive comorbidity of depression or depression-related characteristics were present in women MA users, suggesting that MA may serve as a type of self-medication for their depression. These findings not only highlight the need for consideration of gender when assessing MA use, but also can serve to direct efforts at prevention and treatment programs that address the specific needs of men and women.  相似文献

Haemodynamic responses to low levels of lower body negative pressure (LBNP) were investigated in two groups of healthy, normotensive volunteers (8 men and 8 women) during two repeated experimental runs on two occasions, the latter determined by the different phases of the menstrual cycle in the women. The data consisted of systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean blood pressure (MBP), pulse rate (fc), forearm blood flow (FBF) and forearm vascular conductance (FC). The resting cardiovascular status was similar in men and women, except that women had a significantly higher fc than men. LBNP (1.3, 2.7 and 4 kPa) had no significant effect on any BP variable or on fc. However, FBF and FC were reduced at all levels of LBNP. Significant overshoots in FBF and FC were seen in all subjects following the release of LBNP of 2.7 and 4 kPa and, in most cases, after release of LBNP of 1.3 kPa. There were no significant gender differences in any of the responses to LBNP. Furthermore, none of the cardiovascular variables measured showed significant differences between the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle in women, either at rest or during exposure to LBNP, and the responses in the men on the two occasions were not different. These findings indicate that gender differences in responses to LBNP hypothesized previously are not apparent during and after exposure to low levels of LBNP.  相似文献

Background: Although women have been performing increasingly more manual labor in the workplace in the past 2 decades, their physiological responses and gender-based differences in muscle microvascularity during occupational activities have not yet been extensively documented. Objective: This study assessed gender differences and tissue heterogeneity in peripheral circulatory responses from 2 muscle groups during pushing and pulling exercise until volitional exhaustion. Methods: In healthy men and women, near-infrared spectroscopy was used to determine peripheral responses, oxygenation, and blood volume simultaneously from the right biceps brachii and lumbar erector spinae. Pulmonary oxygen uptake was assessed using a metabolic measurement cart. Results: Although the 11 men who participated in the study demonstrated greater pulmonary oxygen uptake and power output at volitional exhaustion, their peak peripheral responses for both muscles were similar to those of the 11 women participating. In both sexes, oxygenations trends decreased in both muscles with an increase in workload. However, whereas blood volume increased in the biceps, it decreased in the lumbar muscle in both sexes. At 20% to 60% levels of peak pulmonary oxygen uptake, the percent change in peripheral bicep responses was greater for men than for women (P < 0.05). In contrast, women demonstrated greater change in lumbar muscle oxygenation compared with men at 40% to 60% of peak pulmonary oxygen uptake (P < 0.05).Conclusions: Similar peripheral responses for biceps and lumbar muscles at the point of volitional exhaustion suggest that gender differences in pulmonary oxygen uptake are independent of oxygen extraction or delivery across the muscle groups monitored. However, at submaximal levels of exercise, the peripheral changes in each muscle were gender dependent. Although biceps and lumbar muscles are 2 discrete muscle groups, based on the heterogeneity found in the blood volume trends it is likely that oxygen supply and demand are regulated by muscle location and muscle fiber characteristics. Overall, gender-based assessment of occupational activities should incorporate both pulmonary and peripheral circulatory responses to understand each sex's performance effectiveness.  相似文献

Most men have a category-specific pattern of genital and subjective sexual arousal, responding much more strongly to erotic stimuli depicting their preferred sex than to erotic stimuli depicting their nonpreferred sex. In contrast, women tend to have a less specific arousal pattern. To better understand this sex difference, we used neuroimaging to explore its neural correlates. Heterosexual and homosexual women viewed erotic photographs of either men or women. Evoked neural activity was monitored via fMRI and compared with responses to the same stimuli in heterosexual and homosexual men. Overall, a network of limbic (as well as the anterior cingulate) and visual processing regions showed significantly less category-specific activity in women than men. This was primarily driven by weaker overall activations to preferred-sex stimuli in women, though there was also some evidence of stronger limbic activations to nonpreferred-sex stimuli in women. Primary results were similar for heterosexual and homosexual participants. Women did show some evidence of category-specific responses in the visual processing regions, although even in these regions they exhibited less differential activity than men. In the anterior cingulate, a region with high concentrations of sex-hormone receptors, subjective and neural category specificity measures correlated positively for women but negatively for men, suggesting a possible sex difference in the role of the anterior cingulate. Overall, results suggest that men tend to show more differentiated neural responses than do women to erotic photographs of one sex compared to the other sex, though women may not be entirely indifferent to which sex is depicted.  相似文献

Gender differences in the specificity of sexual response have been a primary focus in sexual psychophysiology research, however, within-gender variability suggests sexual orientation moderates category-specific responding among women; only heterosexual women show gender-nonspecific genital responses to sexual stimuli depicting men and women. But heterosexually-identified or “straight” women are heterogeneous in their sexual attractions and include women who are exclusively androphilic (sexually attracted to men) and women who are predominantly androphilic with concurrent gynephilia (sexually attracted to women). It is therefore unclear if gender-nonspecific responding is found in both exclusively and predominantly androphilic women. The current studies investigated within-gender variability in the gender-specificity of women’s sexual response. Two samples of women reporting concurrent andro/gynephilia viewed (Study 1, n = 29) or listened (Study 2, n = 30) to erotic stimuli varying by gender of sexual partner depicted while their genital and subjective sexual responses were assessed. Data were combined with larger datasets of predominantly gyne- and androphilic women (total N = 78 for both studies). In both studies, women reporting any degree of gynephilia, including those who self-identified as heterosexual, showed significantly greater genital response to female stimuli, similar to predominantly gynephilic women; gender-nonspecific genital response was observed for exclusively androphilic women only. Subjective sexual arousal patterns were more variable with respect to sexual attractions, likely reflecting stimulus intensity effects. Heterosexually-identified women are therefore not a homogenous group with respect to sexual responses to gender cues. Implications for within-gender variation in women’s sexual orientation and sexual responses are discussed.  相似文献

Sex-related differences in global/local hemispheric selective processing were examined by hierarchically presented letters in conditions of their perception and comparison. Fifty-six right-handed men and 68 women (aged 17–22 years) participated in the experiment. During the interference between global and local aspects of stimuli, the mean reaction time for correct global responses was shorter than for local responses, and the right hemisphere dominated during global selective processing independently of sex. Sex-related differences in perception of visual hierarchical stimuli were more pronounced than during their comparison: men preferred the right-hemispheric global strategy of information processing, and women, the left-hemispheric local one. The dominance of the global strategy in men and local strategy in women during visual hierarchical stimuli perception, together with the absence of sex-related differences in correct responses indicates the possibility of obtaining the same efficiency of cognitive activity in different ways.  相似文献

This study was conducted because of the paucity of information concerning gender differences in the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to cold stress. Lightly clad men (n = 8) and women (n = 8) were tested in 21 and 5 degrees C environments during a 20-min rest, followed by 20 min each of 50, 100, and 150 W of exercise. At 21 degrees C there was no gender differences in VO2 or cardiac output. Cold lowered skin temperature more in women than in men, but women demonstrated no differences in heart rate, stroke volume, or VO2 at 5 and 21 degrees C. The women's noradrenaline levels in the cold were higher than comparable 21 degrees C data at rest and 50 W and increased with work intensity in both tests. In contrast, men had a lower heart rate, higher stroke volume, and higher VO2 throughout the 5 degrees C treatment compared with 21 degrees C. The men's noradrenaline response to 5 degrees C was similar to that of women at rest and 50 W, but the level subsequently declined at 100 and 150 W. Thus, the women do not show a heart rate-stroke volume shift in either resting or exercising states in cold environments. Furthermore, the data fail to support that either skin cooling or changes in noradrenaline cause the bradycardia and enhanced stroke volume seen in men.  相似文献

Gender differences in the changes substrates of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism as well as in adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone, insulin and cortisol were investigated in 24 women and 24 men during exhaustive endurance exercise. Training history and current performance capacity were taken into consideration in the design of the study. Since previous papers present conflicting results the purpose of the present study was to obtain further information regarding possible gender differences in lipid metabolism and its regulation by hormones. Non-endurance-trained women and men each ran 10 km on a treadmill at an intensity of 75% of VO2max; endurance-trained women and men ran 14 and 17 km, respectively, at an intensity of 80% of VO2max. Blood glucose levels in non-endurance-trained women were higher when compared to non-endurance-trained men. This might be explained by increased mobilization of free fatty acids from intramuscular fat depots during energy production in non-specifically trained women. In contrast, no substantial gender differences in endurance-trained persons were seen in lipid metabolism. The changes in substrates of lipid metabolism confirm the higher lipolytic activity and greater utilization of free fatty acids in endurance-trained persons. During endurance exercise, changes in adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone, insulin and cortisol were not substantially affected by the sex of the subjects. This study does not present any conclusive results that endurance-trained persons show gender differences in lipid metabolism and major regulatory hormones.  相似文献

Past research has demonstrated clear gender differences in reported mate selection criteria. Compared to women, men place more importance on physical attractiveness and women place more importance than men do on the earning capacity of a potential mate. These gender differences have been explained using both sociobiological propositions and differences in the relative economic power of men and women. The present study tested the structural powerlessness hypothesis as an explanation for women's greater emphasis on the earning capacity of a potential spouse. Samples of college students (N = 997) and community members (N = 282) were asked to report expected personal income and to rate the importance of listed characteristics in a potential mate. Consistent with past research, men placed more emphasis on the item Good Looks, whereas women placed more importance on the item Good Financial Prospect. Contrary to the structural powerless model, women's expected income was positively related to ratings of the importance of a potential mate's earning capacity in the college sample and was unrelated to women's ratings of the item Good Financial Prospect in the community sample. Findings are discussed in terms of both evolutionary psychology and gender differences in access to financial resources.  相似文献

Gender differences of exploratory eye movements: a life span study   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Exploratory eye movements of normal subjects (39 male and 39 female) were recorded using an eye-mark recorder. Four parameters mean gazing time, total number of gazing points, mean scanning length, and total scanning length) were analyzed. Subjects were divided into three life spans as prepuberty (boys and girls), adult, and postpuberty. The mean gazing time of adult women was significantly longer than that of age-matched adult men, but not between men and women in prepuberty or postpuberty (postmenopausal older women and age-matched older men). The total number of gazing points of women was significantly smaller than that of men, but not significantly different between men and women in both prepuberty and postpuberty. Both the mean scanning length and total scanning length of adult women were shorter than those of age matched adult men, but no significant differences were found between men and women in both prepuberty and postpuberty. Furthermore, the mean gazing time of adult women was longer than that of men in prepuberty and postpuberty. The total scanning length of adult men was longer than that of women in both prepuberty and postpuberty. These findings suggest that gender differences of exploratory eye movements are observed only during the adult phase, which indicates that visual information processing may be regulated by gonadal hormones in humans.  相似文献

In this paper we draw from black and multiracial feminist theories to argue that interpersonal racial discrimination should be understood as a potentially gendered phenomenon. While there are some discriminatory practices that are directed at both black men and black women, some forms of racial discrimination affect men more than women, and some affect women more than men. Still other forms may be gender-specific. Our review of existing literature shows that most survey research has utilized measures and models of racial discrimination that fail to account for these gender differences. Drawing on the 2001–2003 National Survey of American Life (NSAL) we demonstrate the importance of gender for understanding and analysing interpersonal racial discrimination. We offer concrete ways for social researchers to centralize gender in their analyses. By doing so, we hope to advance the development of an intersectional approach to racial discrimination.  相似文献

Background

Increased mortality among men on antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been documented but remains poorly understood. We examined the magnitude of and risk factors for gender differences in mortality on ART.

Methods and Findings

Analyses included 46,201 ART-naïve adults starting ART between January 2002 and December 2009 in eight ART programmes across South Africa (SA). Patients were followed from initiation of ART to outcome or analysis closure. The primary outcome was mortality; secondary outcomes were loss to follow-up (LTF), virologic suppression, and CD4+ cell count responses. Survival analyses were used to examine the hazard of death on ART by gender. Sensitivity analyses were limited to patients who were virologically suppressed and patients whose CD4+ cell count reached >200 cells/µl. We compared gender differences in mortality among HIV+ patients on ART with mortality in an age-standardised HIV-negative population.Among 46,201 adults (65% female, median age 35 years), during 77,578 person-years of follow-up, men had lower median CD4+ cell counts than women (85 versus 110 cells/µl, p<0.001), were more likely to be classified WHO stage III/IV (86 versus 77%, p<0.001), and had higher mortality in crude (8.5 versus 5.7 deaths/100 person-years, p<0.001) and adjusted analyses (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR] 1.31, 95% CI 1.22–1.41). After 36 months on ART, men were more likely than women to be truly LTF (AHR 1.20, 95% CI 1.12–1.28) but not to die after LTF (AHR 1.04, 95% CI 0.86–1.25). Findings were consistent across all eight programmes. Virologic suppression was similar by gender; women had slightly better immunologic responses than men. Notably, the observed gender differences in mortality on ART were smaller than gender differences in age-standardised death rates in the HIV-negative South African population. Over time, non-HIV mortality appeared to account for an increasing proportion of observed mortality. The analysis was limited by missing data on baseline HIV disease characteristics, and we did not observe directly mortality in HIV-negative populations where the participating cohorts were located.

Conclusions

HIV-infected men have higher mortality on ART than women in South African programmes, but these differences are only partly explained by more advanced HIV disease at the time of ART initiation, differential LTF and subsequent mortality, and differences in responses to treatment. The observed differences in mortality on ART may be best explained by background differences in mortality between men and women in the South African population unrelated to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Invited review: gender issues related to spaceflight: a NASA perspective.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This minireview provides an overview of known and potential gender differences in physiological responses to spaceflight. The paper covers cardiovascular and exercise physiology, barophysiology and decompression sickness, renal stone risk, immunology, neurovestibular and sensorimotor function, nutrition, pharmacotherapeutics, and reproduction. Potential health and functional impacts associated with the various physiological changes during spaceflight are discussed, and areas needing additional research are highlighted. Historically, studies of physiological responses to microgravity have not been aimed at examining gender-specific differences in the astronaut population. Insufficient data exist in most of the discipline areas at this time to draw valid conclusions about gender-specific differences in astronauts, in part due to the small ratio of women to men. The only astronaut health issue for which a large enough data set exists to allow valid conclusions to be drawn about gender differences is orthostatic intolerance following shuttle missions, in which women have a significantly higher incidence of presyncope during stand tests than do men. The most common observation across disciplines is that individual differences in physiological responses within genders are usually as large as, or larger than, differences between genders. Individual characteristics usually outweigh gender differences per se.  相似文献

Defective structural and neural upper airway properties both play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea. A more favorable structural upper airway property [pharyngeal critical pressure under hypotonic conditions (passive Pcrit)] has been documented for women. However, the role of sex-related modulation in compensatory responses to upper airway obstruction (UAO), independent of the passive Pcrit, remains unclear. Obese apneic men and women underwent a standard polysomnography and physiological sleep studies to determine sleep apnea severity, passive Pcrit, and compensatory airflow and respiratory timing responses to prolonged periods of UAO. Sixty-two apneic men and women, pairwise matched by passive Pcrit, exhibited similar sleep apnea disease severity during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, but women had markedly less severe disease during non-REM (NREM) sleep. By further matching men and women by body mass index and age (n = 24), we found that the lower NREM disease susceptibility in women was associated with an approximately twofold increase in peak inspiratory airflow (P = 0.003) and inspiratory duty cycle (P = 0.017) in response to prolonged periods of UAO and an ~20% lower minute ventilation during baseline unobstructed breathing (ventilatory demand) (P = 0.027). Thus, during UAO, women compared with men had greater upper airway and respiratory timing responses and a lower ventilatory demand that may account for sex differences in sleep-disordered breathing severity during NREM sleep, independent of upper airway structural properties and sleep apnea severity during REM sleep.  相似文献

BackgroundThe incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing in industrialized countries. Preventive action is an important factor in minimizing CVD-associated morbidity and mortality. However, it is not known whether gender differences affect CVD or risk factor awareness influencing self-assessment of personal risk and preventive action.ObjectiveThis study was performed to assess individual CVD and risk factor awareness, preventive action taken, and barriers to cardiovascular health.MethodsThe study included 573 women and 336 men, randomly chosen to complete an anonymous questionnaire to assess individual CVD and risk factor awareness, preventive action taken, and barriers to cardiovascular health. The data were analyzed using SAS software.ResultsCardiovascular disease was identified in 75% of patients, in both sexes, as the leading cause of death; however, both groups showed significant lack of knowledge about CVD risk factors. Type 2 diabetes was identified correctly in only 27.5%. Preventive action was linked more often to family members in 66.5% of women and 62.8% of men. The primary barrier to cardiovascular health in adults was incorrect assessment of personal CVD risk. More than half of female respondents (56.4%) and male respondents (52.7%) underestimated their risk of CVD.ConclusionKnowledge about risk factors for CVD needs to be improved in members of both sexes. Because women, in particular, have difficulty in correctly assessing their personal CVD risk, future education programs are warranted to inform both women and men about CVD and its risk factors, thereby helping them to correctly assess their individual risk. However, greater effort is needed to inform men, compared with women, about the various ways in which to prevent CVD and to motivate them to take preventive action.  相似文献

Introduction

There is a strong clinical need to provide effective stress reduction programs for patients with an acute coronary syndrome. Such programs for men have been implemented and their cardiovascular health benefit documented. For women such programs are scarce. In this report, The feasibility of a cognitive method that was recently demonstrated to prolong lives of women is tested. A setting with gender segregated groups was applied.

Method

The principles of a behavioural health educational program originally designed to attenuate the stress of patients with coronary prone behaviours were used as a basis for the intervention method. For the groups of female patients this method was tailored according to female stressors and for the groups of men according to male stressors. The same core stress reduction program was used for women and men, but the contents of discussions and responses to the pre planned program varied. These were continuously monitored throughout the fifteen sessions. Implementation group: Thirty consecutive patients, eleven women and nineteen men, hospitalized for an acute coronary syndrome were included in this intervention. All expressed their need to learn how to cope with stress in daily life and were highly motivated. Five groups, three groups of men and two groups of women were formed. Psychological assessments were made immediately before and after completion of the program.

Results

No gender differences in the pre planned programs were found, but discussion styles varied between the women and men, Women were more open and more personal. Family issues were more frequent than job issues, although all women were employed outside their homes. Men talked about concrete and practical things, mostly about their jobs, and not directly about their feelings. Daily stresses of life decreased significantly for both men and women, but more so for women. Depressive thoughts were low at baseline, and there was no change over time. In contrast, anxiety scores were high at baseline and decreased significantly, but more so for women than for men.

Conclusion

Women are likely to benefit from women's groups. Men may prefer to have one or two women in the group, but women fare better in gender segregated groups.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that women have blunted sympathetic neural responses to orthostatic stress compared with men, which may be elicited under hypovolemic conditions. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and hemodynamics were measured in eight healthy young women and seven men in supine position and during 6 min of 60 degrees head-up tilt (HUT) under normovolemic and hypovolemic conditions (randomly), with approximately 4-wk interval. Acute hypovolemia was produced by diuretic (furosemide) administration approximately 2 h before testing. Orthostatic tolerance was determined by progressive lower body negative pressure to presyncope. We found that furosemide produced an approximately 13% reduction in plasma volume, causing a similar increase in supine MSNA in men and women (mean +/- SD of 5 +/- 7 vs. 6 +/- 5 bursts/min; P = 0.895). MSNA increased during HUT and was greater in the hypovolemic than in the normovolemic condition (32 +/- 6 bursts/min in normovolemia vs. 44 +/- 15 bursts/min in hypovolemia in men, P = 0.055; 35 +/- 9 vs. 45 +/- 8 bursts/min in women, P < 0.001); these responses were not different between the genders (gender effect: P = 0.832 and 0.814 in normovolemia and hypovolemia, respectively). Total peripheral resistance increased proportionately with increases in MSNA during HUT; these responses were similar between the genders. However, systolic blood pressure was lower, whereas diastolic blood pressure was similar in women compared with men during HUT, which was associated with a smaller stroke volume or stroke index. Orthostatic tolerance was lower in women, especially under hypovolemic conditions. These results indicate that men and women have comparable sympathetic neural responses during orthostatic stress under normovolemic and hypovolemic conditions. The lower orthostatic tolerance in women is predominantly because of a smaller stroke volume, presumably due to less cardiac filling during orthostasis, especially under hypovolemic conditions, which may overwhelm the vasomotor reserve available for vasoconstriction or precipitate neurally mediated sympathetic withdrawal and syncope.  相似文献

Face perception is modulated by sexual preference   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Face perception is mediated by a distributed neural system in the human brain . The response to faces is modulated by cognitive factors such as attention, visual imagery, and emotion ; however, the effects of gender and sexual orientation are currently unknown. We used fMRI to test whether subjects would respond more to their sexually preferred faces and predicted such modulation in the reward circuitry. Forty heterosexual and homosexual men and women viewed photographs of male and female faces and assessed facial attractiveness. Regardless of their gender and sexual orientation, all subjects similarly rated the attractiveness of both male and female faces. Within multiple, bilateral face-selective regions in the visual cortex, limbic system, and prefrontal cortex, similar patterns of activation were found in all subjects in response to both male and female faces. Consistent with our hypothesis, we found a significant interaction between stimulus gender and the sexual preference of the subject in the thalamus and medial orbitofrontal cortex, where heterosexual men and homosexual women responded more to female faces and heterosexual women and homosexual men responded more to male faces. Our findings suggest that sexual preference modulates face-evoked activation in the reward circuitry.  相似文献
