Summary Principal components analysis is well suited for many data analysis problems in ecology, particularly for data reduction and hypothesis generation; but the structure of PCA is poorly suited for indirect gradient analysis. Whatever the intended application of PCA, the user must exercise special care in selecting data transformations to prevent the analysis from being overwhelmed by the purely numerical effects in the variance structure of the data.I would like to thank R. Using multivariate analyses, we evaluated the roles of landscape position and human development in the presence, composition, and abundance of freshwater macrophyte communities among 60 study lakes located in Vilas County, Wisconsin. These lakes varied in their position in a drainage network and surrounding land use as well as size, maximum depth, chemistry, and clarity. We used non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination, cluster analyses, and classification tree analyses to assess the multivariate relationships among macrophyte communities and environmental variables including an index of human development. Macrophyte communities in lakes high in the landscape were found to be dominated by isoetids while lakes low in the drainage network were dominated by elodeids due to the difference in bicarbonate concentrations. The presence of the human-introduced crayfish, Orconectes rusticus, had a high and significant correlation with the absence of macrophytes. An increase in human development correlated with a decrease in macrophyte abundance.  相似文献

Summary Cluster analysis and canonical ordination were used as complementary techniques to identify major associations in a lower montane rain forest in Puerto Rico. These techniques were applied to forestry inventories from both secondary and primary communities. Eight major forest types were identified from the analyses and were confirmed by field checks. Distribution of these types was strongly correlated with past land-use and topographic position.Comprehensive ecological surveys are rare in moist tropical forests; however, forestry inventories are common and the results of this study suggest that valuable ecological information can be obtained from these data sets as well.Scientific Journal Series No. 10793 of the Minnesota Agricultural Experimental Station. Seasonal variations and spatial homogeneity of the phytoplankton community were followed, from spring 1991 to spring 1992, in four pelagic stations of a large deep subalpine lake (Lake Garda, Northern Italy). Both cluster analysis and nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) applied to Bray & Curtis' dissimilarity matrices computed on density and biovolume data were employed; the Bray & Curtis index, calculated between pairs of chronologically contiguous samples, was also used as a measure of the community change rate over the temporal succession. In the tree diagrams obtained both from density and biovolume data, six groups of different size have been identified, with ordered sequences of samples within them. Superimposition of the results of cluster analysis on the NMDS configurations has allowed interpretations of the trajectories of the samples as a chronological and cyclical succession of compositionally homogeneous groups. A clear relationship between the community change rate and stability of the water column has been assessed. The specific composition of the six groups has been discussed in relation to environmental variables and in terms of adaptive strategies. During winter (winter-spring group) the turbulence of the water and the availability of nutrients favour the development of colonial Bacillariophyceae (Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton, Tabellaria fenestrata (Lyngb.) Kütz., Aulacoseira spp.), Cyanophyceae (Planktothrix agardhii (Gom.) Anagn. et Kom. and Planktolyngbya limnetica (Lemur.) Kom.-Legn. et Cronb.) and Cryptophyceae. In late spring group, with the stabilisation of the water column and silicon depletion, the diatoms give way to small, opportunistic species (Ankyra judayi (G. M. Smith) Fott, Cyclotella spp., Chroomonas acuta Utermhöl) and larger species (Ceratium hirundinella (O. F. Müll.) Dujardin). The three summer groups are characterised by a development of Chlorophyceae (chiefly Chlorococcales), Cyanophyceae (mainly Chroococcales), Cyclotella spp. and Dinophyceae. With the autumn destratification the summer community undergoes a rearrangement principally in favour of Cyanophyceae and Cryptophyceae.  相似文献
