The relationship between the intragastric distribution, dilution, and emptying of meals and satiety was studied using noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging techniques in 12 healthy subjects with four polysaccharide test meals of varying viscosity and nutrient content as follows: 1) low-viscosity nonnutrient, 2) low-viscosity nutrient, 3) high-viscosity nonnutrient, and 4) high-viscosity nutrient. Increasing the nutrient content of the high-viscosity meal delayed gastric emptying from 46 +/- 9 to 76 +/- 6 min (P < 0.004), whereas increasing viscosity had a smaller effect. The volume of secretions within the stomach 60 min after ingestion was higher for the high-viscosity nutrient meal (P < 0.04). A simple model to calculate the total volume of secretion added to the test meal is presented. Color-coded dilution map images showed the heterogeneous process of progressive gastric dilution of high-viscosity meals, whereas low-viscosity meals were uniformly diluted. Fullness was found to be linearly related to total gastric volumes for the nutrient meals (R(2) = 0.98) and logarithmically related for the nonnutrient meals (R(2) = 0.96). Fullness was higher for high- compared with low-viscosity meals (P < 0.02), and with the nutrient meals this was associated with greater antral volumes (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Although exercise is often recommended as therapy for constipation, almost nothing is known of the effects of exercise on rates of movement of material in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study we investigated the influence of mild exercise on transit of a liquid meal from the mouth to the large intestine. Orocecal transit time was determined by a consistent elevation of H2 concentration in a rebreathing apparatus after ingestion of 30 g lactulose; the lactulose was part of a 360-kcal, 350-ml liquid meal. Comparison of transit time was made, in 12 young healthy subjects, between seated rest and a treadmill walk at 5.6 km/h up a 2% grade. The walk elevated heart rate from 64 +/- 4 to 109 +/- 5 beats/min, O2 uptake (VO2) from 0.29 +/- 0.02 to 1.20 +/- 0.07 l/min STPD, and final rectal temperature from 37.0 +/- 0.1 to 38.3 +/- 0.1 degrees C (all P less than 0.01). Exercise speeded transit of the liquid meal, with mean rises in H2 concentration taking place 66 +/- 10 min after ingestion at rest, compared with 44 +/- 6 min after food intake during exercise (P less than 0.02). H2 concentrations in the rebreathing apparatus showed similar base lines in the two experiments, and quantitative increases in H2 concentration, although shifted in time by exercise, were otherwise identical. Subjects with the slowest resting transit rates showed the largest exercise effects (r = 0.79, P less than 0.05). These results indicate that mouth-to-cecum transit of at least the first portion of a liquid meal-based nonabsorbable carbohydrate marker is significantly accelerated during mild exercise.  相似文献

For five species of hummingbirds in the laboratory, time between meals was related to energy intake on the first meal and rate of energy expenditure between meals. Field observations gave similar results. Average meal sizes were similar at one intake rate independent of food caloric density; females averaged longer bouts than males. When rate of intake was approximately halved, meal duration approximately doubled and volume intake remained similar. We postulate that feeding is initiated when crop contents reach a lower threshold and that feeding is terminated after ingestion of an optimal volume determined by the added weight of the meal.  相似文献

Ten obese and 10 control subjects were studied in basal conditions and after ingestion of a standard mixed test meal. Blood glucose, insulin, somatostatin (SLI) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) concentrations were determined before and 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 and 240 min after the start of the meal. Basal SLI levels in the obese (14.4 +/- 0.7 ng/l) were not significantly different from those in the controls (15.5 +/- 0.8 ng/l), whereas after the meal a blunted secretory response was recorded. Baseline plasma VIP levels were higher in the obese (29.7 +/- 1.5 ng/l) than in the control subjects (19.8 +/- 1.3 ng/l) and, similarly to the controls, were unaffected by meal ingestion. Data suggest that in the course of obesity an enhanced VIP secretion in association with a diminished SLI responsiveness to meals occurs.  相似文献

Neither the overall rate of intake of liquids by adults of Chortoicetes terminifera, calculated over the course of a whole meal, nor the rate of consumption during the first half of meals was dependent upon the stimulating power of the liquid, water being taken at the same rate as a veriety of more powerfully stimulating sucrose solutions. Rates of intake tended to decrease towards the end of meals, the greatest decreases occurring when the locusts consumed large volumes of liquid. When locusts were given alternate drops of water and 1·0 M sucrose, the rates of consumption of the two kinds of drops were similar for most of the meal, but towards the end of the meal drops of sucrose solution were consumed more rapidly than those of water.  相似文献

Weight reduction, either by dietary or surgical means, is associated with prolongation of the heart rate corrected QT interval (QTc=QT/R-R0–5 and, on occasion, sudden death. Screening subjects with obesity before weight loss for prolonged QTc intervals is an accepted practice, although at present, there are no guidelines for whether subjects should be fasting before electrocardiogram (EKG) evaluation. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that EKG QTc interval duration is independent of meal ingestion. The hypothesis was tested in 11 healthy subjects who ingested a 500-kcal formula meal. A small decrease in absolute QT interval and a steady decline in R-R interval were observed for up to 60 minutes after formula ingestion. The QTc interval increased above baseline at 15 minutes (p<0. 007) after meal, a change that persisted for the 1-hour postmeal observation period. Spectral analysis of EKG R-R intervals (low-/high-frequency amplitude ratio) indicated a change in cardiac autonomic flow after meal ingestion. The QTc interval did not lengthen and R-R low-/highfrequency amplitude ratio remained unchanged in eight subjects evaluated in a similar manner but in whom isovolumic amounts of water replaced the meal. These observations suggest that (1) cardiac repolarization changes with fasting and feeding, (2) the QTc interval is influenced by meal intake, and (3) the autonomic nervous system may play a role in meal-related QTc changes. These findings have implications for the evaluation of patients with obesity before starting and during weight loss treatment.  相似文献

Intense exercise and insulin each increases total limb blood flow and recruits muscle capillaries, presumably to facilitate nutrient exchange. Whether mixed meals or light exercise likewise recruits capillaries is unknown. We fed 18 (9 M, 9 F) healthy volunteers a 480-kcal liquid mixed meal. Plasma glucose, insulin, brachial artery flow, and forearm muscle microvascular blood volume were measured before and after the meal. Brachial artery flow and microvascular volume were also examined with light (25% max), moderate (50%), and heavy (80%) forearm contraction every 20 s in 5 (4 M, 1 F) healthy adults. After the meal, glucose and insulin rose modestly (to approximately 7 mM and approximately 270 pM) and peaked by 30 min, whereas brachial artery blood flow (P < 0.05) and the microvascular volume (P < 0.01) each increased significantly by 60 min, and microvascular flow velocity did not change. For exercise, both 50 and 80%, but not 25% maximal handgrip, increased average forearm and brachial artery blood flow (P < 0.01). Flow increased immediately after each contraction and declined toward basal over 15 s. Exercise at 25% max increased microvascular volume threefold (P < 0.01) without affecting microvascular flow velocity or total forearm blood flow. Forearm exercise at 80% maximal grip increased both microvascular volume and microvascular flow velocity (P < 0.05 each). We conclude that light exercise and simple meals each markedly increases muscle microvascular volume, thereby expanding the endothelial surface for nutrient exchange, and that capillary recruitment is an important physiological response to facilitate nutrient/hormone delivery in healthy humans.  相似文献

Multichannel intraluminal impedance (MII) is a new technique for evaluation of bolus transport. We evaluated esophageal function using bolus transport time (BTT) and contraction wave velocity (CWV) of liquid, semisolid, and solid boluses. Ten healthy subjects underwent MII swallow evaluation with various boluses of sterile water (pH 5), applesauce, three different sized marshmallows, and iced and 130 degrees F water. The effect of bethanechol was also studied. There was no difference in BTT or CWV for all water volumes from 1 to 20 ml. There was significant linear increase of BTT with progressively larger volumes of applesauce, and BTT of applesauce was longer than for water. BTT was significantly longer with large marshmallows vs. small and medium and was longer than for water. BTT for iced water was similar to 130 degrees F water. Applesauce showed a significant linear decrease of CWV with progressively larger volumes and was slower than water. Marshmallow showed significantly slower CWV with the large vs. small, and CWV for ice water was significantly slower than 130 degrees F water. Therefore, BTT of liquid is constant, whereas BTT of semisolid and solid are volume dependent and longer than liquids. CWV of semisolids and solids are slower than liquids. CWV of cold liquids is slower than warm liquids. MII can be used as a discriminating test of esophageal function.  相似文献

Objective: Childhood obesity is a prominent health problem that may involve early learning about tastes and the energy content of foods. We tested the hypothesis that food tastes predictive of low energy content cause overeating in young animals. Research Methods and Procedures: Juvenile and adolescent (4‐ and 8‐week‐old) male JCR:LA‐cp lean (+/cp or +/+) and obesity‐prone (cp/cp) rats were given sweet (saccharin) and salty (sodium chloride) gelatin cubes made with starch (high caloric) or no starch (low caloric) for 16 days of taste conditioning. After 10 hours of food deprivation, rats received pre‐meals with flavors that had been paired or unpaired with high caloric content during taste conditioning, followed immediately by measurement of chow intake at regular meals. Results: Our findings show that both lean (+/cp) and obesity‐prone (cp/cp) juvenile rats ate more regular chow after a pre‐meal with a flavor associated with low caloric value than after a similar pre‐meal with a flavor predictive of high caloric content. This effect occurred with juvenile rats but not with adolescents. Discussion: Data from our study indicate that the subversion of the relationship between taste and caloric content disrupts the normal physiological and behavioral energy balance of juvenile rats, resulting in overeating that is independent of genetic disposition for obesity.  相似文献

The ingestion of a meal high in fat content is known to increase circulating levels of neurotensin (NT) in humans. However, the magnitude of the postprandial rise of NT in the general circulation and its physiological significance have been subject of much debate. The present study examines circulating levels of NT in male volunteers prior to and following each of their three daily meals (ca. 31 g fat/meal). The response observed are also compared to that elicited by the direct instillation of intralipid (ca. 44 g fat) into the duodenum. NT levels were determined by radioimmunoassay of acid/acetone extracted plasma fractionated by high pressure liquid chromatography. Meals caused a significant but modest increase in NT levels, with the largest increment (ca. 4 fmol/ml) occurring after breakfast. In contrast, NT levels increased ca. 20 fmol/ml with intraduodenal instillation of lipid. The meal-stimulated increases in circulating NT measured here are 4- to 5-fold less than those reported by others, the difference most likely reflecting the lesser amount of lipid ingested. Previous studies provided subjects with single meals containing in excess of 120 g of fat; the 30 g of fat ingested by our subjects, ca. 33% of total caloric intake, is near that recommended by the U.S. Senate, Select Committee on Nutritional and Human Needs. These data show that diets with a reasonable fat content have only a modest effect on circulating levels of NT.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to characterize the volumes and rates of gastric emptying of both liquid and gas following the ingestion of beverages of varying carbonation and carbohydrate levels. Eight subjects drank 800 ml each of four test beverages in a counterbalanced order: water, a non-carbonated carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (NC), a lightly carbonated carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (PC), and a carbonated cola (CC). T2-weighted, echoplanar images (25-30 contiguous slices, 1 cm thick, 256 x 128 matrix, TE = 80, 40 cm FOV) of the abdomen were collected at minutes 3,110, 20, 30, 45, and 60 following beverage ingestion. Images were analyzed for gas and liquid volumes. Water and NC emptied the most rapidly, with half times of 21(3) and 31(3) min, respectively [mean (SE)]. PC emptied significantly slower [47 (6) min] and CC slower yet [107 (8) min]. The carbonation content of the beverage accounted for 84% of the variation in emptying time, whereas carbohydrate content did not account for any significant variation. The gastric gas volume of the CC was higher at 2 min post-ingestion compared with all other drinks; however, the rate of emptying of the gas was the same among all beverages. Significantly greater total gastric volumes (gas+ liquid) were associated with the ingestion of CC, and accordingly produced a greater severity of gastric distress, as evaluated with a gastric distress inventory. The high gastric gas volumes (approximately 600 ml) after ingestion of CC suggested a potential source of error in body composition using standard hydrostatic weighing methods. This prediction was tested in nine additional subjects. Ingestion of 800 ml of CC prior to hydrostatic weighing resulted in a 0.7% underestimate of body density and thus an 11% overestimate of percentage body fat compared to measurements made before beverage consumption.  相似文献

Japanese quail ate shorter meals with pellets than with mash, and longer and more frequent meals with diluted mash (40% cellulose) than undiluted mash. The differences with particle size were due to different rates of ingestion, and those with nutrient density to different meal volumes and different rates of passage. Average meal size was about the same with all foods in terms of weight eaten, but not nutrients digested. Short-term adjustments in feeding were concerned mainly with changes in meal frequency, and longer-term adjustments mainly with changes in meal size. It is concluded that the control of meal-eating is concerned with emptying and filling of the digestive tract and not with changing levels of circulating nutrients, and parts of the gut that may be involved are suggested.  相似文献

The stomach of the rhesus monkey empties liquids in a fashion that varies with the character of the solutions. Physiological saline empties exponentially. Glucose solutions empty biphasically--rapidly for the first minutes, then slowly and proportionately to glucose concentration to deliver glucose calories through the pylorus at a regulated rate (0.4 kcal/min). This prolonged and regulated second phase of gastric emptying depends on intestinal inhibition of the stomach. Cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone released by food in the intestine, is an inhibitor of gastric emptying. In vitro receptor autoradiography demonstrates CCK receptors to be clustered on the circular muscle of the pylorus. Exogenous CCK, in doses that inhibit gastric emptying, will reduce food intake only if combined with an infusion of saline in the stomach. These observations indicate how gastric distension can be a means for provoking satiety. The variably sustained distension produced by the stomach's slow, calorically regulated emptying could prolong intermeal intervals and thus permit high-calorie meals to inhibit further caloric intake over time. CCK, by directly inhibiting gastric emptying during a meal, could promote gastric distension and so restrict the duration and size of individual meals.  相似文献

Plasma glutamate concentrations were examined in male rats following oral intubation of monosodium L-glutamic acid (MSG, 250 mg/kg) soon after ingesting one of several meals differing in carbohydrate content. Intubation of MSG alone produced a 4-fold rise in plasma glutamate that peaked at 15 min, and returned to baseline by 60 min. Red blood cell glutamate concentrations were unchanged. The ingestion of a meal lacking carbohydrate produced a modest attenuation of the post-MSG intubation rise in plasma glutamate concentrations. This attenuating effect increased progressively with the carbohydrate content of the meal (and as the protein content declined, to maintain isocaloric meals), though as little as 5% carbohydrate marked attenuated the plasma glutamate rise. This effect diminished as the time interval between the meal and MSG intubation increased from 1 to 4 hrs. Similar, but not identical effects were noted when meals substituted fat (instead of protein) for carbohydrate. The intubation of MSG alone produced a slight increase in plasma alanine concentrations over the 60-min post-intubation period examined. The ingestion of any of the meals just prior to intubation did not influence this effect. Overall, the results indicate that although the ingestion of carbohydrate can markedly attenuate the rise in plasma glutamate that follows MSG consumption in rats, this effect is also influenced by the other macronutrients present. The absence of notable, meal related changes in plasma alanine suggests that this parameter does not provide a useful indication of gut glutamate transamination.  相似文献

Attempts to understand ingestion have sought to understand the control of meals. The present study evaluated a meal definition that included prandial drinking (drinking-explicit meals). The spontaneous nocturnal intake of male Wistar rats was studied. The meal breakpoint was defined as the interval between feeding or drinking events providing the most stable estimate of meal structure. Alternative breakpoints derived from prevailing methodology, log-survivorship, or frequency histogram analysis of interfeeding intervals without respect to drinking were compared (drinking-naive meals). Threshold interfeeding intervals that accounted for drinking indirectly were evaluated as surrogate breakpoints (drinking-implicit meals). Definitions were compared by determining which criterion better conformed to predictions of satiety. Microstructural differences resulting from the definitions were also studied. Under the drinking-explicit definition, rats averaged nine or ten 13-min meals/night, during which they consumed food and water equally in duration (5-6 min) and quantity (2.3 g). Individual differences were observed in microstructure measures. Meals defined by drinking-informed, but not drinking-naive, methods were followed by the behavioral satiety sequence and by an initially low likelihood of resuming feeding that monotonically increased with time. The drinking-explicit definition uniquely revealed preprandial and postprandial correlations of similar magnitude. Under drinking-informed definitions, food restriction increased meal size, whereas drinking-naive definitions increased meal frequency. Drinking-implicit definitions provided workable approximations of meal frequency and size but inferior estimates of feeding duration, eating rate, and the preprandial correlation. Thus log-survivorship analysis is not appropriate for identifying meal breakpoints, and the consideration of drinking in meal definitions can provide a better estimate of meal structure.  相似文献

When exposed to a human host, Anopheles gambiae started probing 4 h post-eclosion, but 95% successfully blood-fed by 16-20 h with maximal blood volumes of 5- 10 microl per female. When fed sugar, the 95% feeding was not observed until 36-40 h post-eclosion; sugar meals appeared to interfere with blood meals. Similarly in An. atroparvus, maximum volumes were 10 microl when starved but only 6 microl when fed sugar. This species did not bite before 2 d, and 95% biting was by 4 d. Given single blood meals to water-kept An. gambiae, a threshold body size for oogenesis was detected. With wing lengths below 2.8 mm, eggs never matured, but when sugar-fed, females of all sizes matured eggs including the synthesis of maternal deposits. Although sugar feeding interfered with blood feeding, more lipid was transferred to the yolk. In water-kept An. atroparvus only 5% of the females produced eggs. When sugar-fed for 4 d, all females matured eggs, so in this species sugar feeding appeared to be essential for oogenesis. An. gambiae always took multiple blood meals, tested at any time after the first ones, leading to 120 mature eggs/female. Yolk composition was 3.9 mcal protein and 3.8 mcal lipid/oocyte when kept on water, but 2.8 meal protein and 4.3 mcal lipid/oocyte with intermittent sugar meals, thus marking a surprising flexibility in synthesis of yolk protein and lipid that strongly depends on additional carbohydrates sources. Only 80% of water-fed An. atroparvus re-fed 2 d after a first blood meal with small females taking three blood meals but they still showed reduced fecundity. Only the large water-fed females matured eggs, with blood volumes higher than 9-12 microl. When fed sugar, the blood meal input was reduced, but oogenesis was possible, whereas water-fed females required three blood meals to reach the caloric level comparable to pre-feeding sugar-fed females. Water-fedAn. gambiae could survive on daily blood meals alone, but survival was further extended by intermittent sugar meals. When offered a blood donor daily, there was a behavioral difference. Females maintained alone showed a more or less regular 3 d feeding and oviposition activity, while females kept in groups fed daily followed a daily oviposition pattern, suggesting gonotrophic discordance.  相似文献

The changes in peripheral (hand) blood flow that occurred when deep body temperature was raised were measured in 13 patients with anorexia nervosa and 13 control subjects. The relation between blood flow and core temperature was shifted to the left in the patients with anorexia, with the onset of vasodilatation occurring at lower core and mean skin temperatures: no significant differences in the slopes of the responses were evident. The onset of thermal sweating occurred at lower core and mean skin temperatures in the patients with anorexia than in the controls. After ingestion of a high-energy liquid meal core temperature increased in the patients, and this was accompanied by a significant rise in peripheral blood flow in most cases. A similar meal in the normal subjects was followed by either no change in core temperature or a slight fall, and no consistent change in peripheral blood flow. These findings suggest that the lowering of thresholds for thermoregulatory sweating and vasodilatation may be a contributory factor to the abnormally low core temperature of patients with anorexia and may also explain some of their common complaints relating to feelings of warmth in the hands and feet after meals.  相似文献

Apparent SDA was defined as the energy expenditure associated with the ingestion of a meal. In the present study apparent SDA was equated to an increase in oxygen consumption above the postabsorptive level subsequent to the ingestion of a meal. The energy cost for physically processing a meal, mechanical SDA, was equated to the oxygen uptake associated with the ingestion of non-digestible cellulose. The energy utilized by anabolic and catabolic processes associated with the ingestion of a standard diet was identified as biochemical SDA. Apparent, mechanical and biochemical SDA were each positively related to the energy intake of the standard diet. Apparent SDA expressed relatively to energy ingested equalled 10·5% and was independent of the caloric content of the meal. Mechanical SDA increased asymptotically with ingested meal size and energy content. Relative to apparent SDA, mechanical SDA decreased with meal size, suggestive of an enhancement in efficiency. Biochemical SDA rose exponentially with increase in ingested energy, reflective of the cost for growth and catabolism.  相似文献

In this study we evaluated the feasibility of measuring cerebral blood flow in rats by monitoring the transit of an indocyanine green bolus through the brain with multiwavelength near-infrared spectroscopy. Different volumes of a 1 mg/ml indocyanine green solution (5, 15, 25, 50 microl) were injected intravenously in the search for an optimal dose. Clear transit curves were obtained with all doses and a blood flow index could easily be determined. The indocyanine green signal obtained with the bolus of 5 microl rapidly returned to baseline and interfered minimally with the haemoglobin and cytochrome oxidase signals. This dose was used in a second study to evaluate the reproducibility of the signal and the effect of hypercapnia. Two groups of rats received 7 repetitive boli of indocyanine green. In one group, 7% CO(2) was added to the gas mixture before the second, fourth and sixth indocyanine green injection. Hypercapnia consistently caused a significant increase in blood flow index, cerebral haemoglobin concentration and O(2)-saturation. In the control group these variables remained stable in time. We conclude that monitoring of the transit of an indocyanine green bolus with multiwavelength near-infrared spectroscopy can be used to assess cerebral blood flow qualitatively in rats in combination with continuous monitoring of brain oxygenation.  相似文献

The use of paracetamol as tool to determine gastric emptying was evaluated in a cross over study. Twelve healthy volunteers were included and each of them consumed two low and two high caloric meals. Paracetamol was mixed with a liquid meal and administered by a nasogastric feeding tube. The post prandial paracetamol plasma concentration time curve in all participants and the paracetamol concentration in the stomach content in six participants were determined. It was found that after paracetamol has left the stomach, based on analysis of the stomach content, there was still a substantial rise in the plasma paracetamol concentration time curve. Moreover, the difference in gastric emptying between high and low caloric meals was missed using the plasma paracetamol concentration time curve. The latter curves indicate that (i) part of the paracetamol may leave the stomach much quicker than the meal and (ii) part of the paracetamol may be relatively slowly absorbed in the duodenum. This can be explained by the partition of the homogenous paracetamol-meal mixture in the stomach in an aqueous phase and a solid bolus. The aqueous phase leaves the stomach quickly and the paracetamol in this phase is quickly absorbed in the duodenum, giving rise to the relatively steep increase of the paracetamol concentration in the plasma. The bolus leaves the stomach relatively slowly, and encapsulation by the bolus results in relatively slow uptake of paracetamol from the bolus in the duodenum. These findings implicate that paracetamol is not an accurate post prandial marker for gastric emptying. The paracetamol concentration time curve rather illustrates the food-drug interaction on absorption, which is not only governed by gastric emptying.
