We used metadata on nine reproductive traits of 67 species of Brazilian iteroparous, oviparous, teleost freshwater fishes to test phenotypes associations to discriminate species that only spawn in large rivers (lotic fishes) from those capable to spawn in lentic habitats (lentic fishes). We tested the hypothesis that lotic fishes present spawning migration, shorter spawning season, single spawning, no parental care, free eggs, higher relative fecundity, faster embryogenesis, and larger size, while lentic fishes present no spawning migration, longer spawning season, multiple spawning, parental care, adhesive eggs, lower relative fecundity, slower embryogenesis, and smaller size. Our analyses supported the hypothesis but not all phenotypic associations satisfied it, specifically with regard to lentic fishes or to pairs of phenotypes typical of lentic fishes. We also concluded that spawning in large rivers is a better predictor of bionomic characters than spawning in lentic habitats, and lotic fishes are specialists compared to lentic fishes.  相似文献

Hatchlings of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, display phase polyphenism in body coloration and size. This phenomenon has been found to be maternally controlled and two different mechanisms have been proposed to explain the underlying process. One mechanism claims that a water-soluble pheromonal factor secreted by gregarious female adults into the foam plugs of egg pods induces darkening in their progeny. The other mechanism states that hatchling body coloration is pre-determined in the ovaries and that no foam factor is involved in this phenomenon. This mechanism was supported by the observation that hatchling melanization was not prevented by the early washing or separation of eggs, which should have removed the pheromonal factor from the eggs and produced green hatchlings according to the other mechanism. This paper reviews the latest findings related to this phenomenon with special reference to reproductive cycles and genetic differences. The close relationships between egg size and the degree of melanization in hatchlings may provide strong evidence against the possible involvement of the pheromonal factor, because egg size is determined in the ovarioles. Furthermore, the absence of “solitarizing” effects of early washing and separation on hatchling melanization was also confirmed in different genetic strains. A hypothesis proposed by others that such effects occur only in eggs from the first reproductive cycle was tested and rejected. Based on these and other results, a model to explain the mechanisms underlying the maternal control of progeny characteristics and embryonic control of melanization in the hatchling was proposed.  相似文献

Incubation temperature and the amount of water taken up by eggs from the substrate during incubation affects hatchling size and morphology in many oviparous reptiles. The Brisbane river turtle Emydura signata lays hard-shelled eggs and hatchling mass was unaffected by the amount of water gained or lost during incubation. Constant temperature incubation of eggs at 24 °C, 26 °C, 28 °C and 31 °C had no effect on hatchling mass, yolk-free hatchling mass, residual yolk mass, carapace length, carapace width, plastron length or plastron width. However, hatchlings incubated at 26 °C and 28 °C had wider heads than hatchlings incubated at 24 °C and 31 °C. Incubation period varied inversely with incubation temperature, while the rate of increase in oxygen consumption during the first part of incubation and the peak rate of oxygen consumption varied directly with incubation temperature. The total amount of oxygen consumed during development and hatchling production cost was significantly greater at 24 °C than at 26 °C, 28 °C and 31 °C. Life-history theory predicts that, in long-lived organisms, effort towards reproduction will increase with age, and research from oviparous vertebrates largely supports this prediction. In reptiles, where parental care occurs primarily via provisioning of the egg, older females tend to produce larger eggs, which in turn produce larger hatchlings that have increased survival. We conducted an experimental release study and report that maternal age positively influences offspring survivorship in the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) and predicts offspring survival at least as well as hatchling body size does. These data suggest that, although increasing hatchling size is a major component of reproductive success in older individuals, other factors also contribute.  相似文献

Summary There is evidence that the side-blotched lizard, Uta stansburiana, and some other organisms of temperate latitudes produce fewer and larger eggs as the reproductive season progresses. There are at least two models that could explain this phenomenon.Proponents of the parental investment model claim that females are selected to increase egg size, at the cost of clutch size, late in the season in order to produce larger and competitively superior hatchlings at a time when food for hatchlings is in low supply and when juvenile density is high. In this model the selective agent is relative scarcity of food available to hatchlings late in the reproductive season, and the adaptive response is production of larger offspring.The alternative explanation (bet-hedging model) proposed in this paper is based on the view that the amount of food available to females for the production of late-season clutches is unpredictable, and that selection has favored conservatively small clutches in the late season to insure that each egg is at least minimally provisioned. Smaller clutches, which occur most frequently late in the season, are more likely to consist of larger eggs, compared to larger clutches, for two reasons. Firstly, unlike birds, oviparous lizards cannot alter parental investment after their eggs are deposited, and therefore, in cases of fractional optimal clutch size, the next lower integral clutch size is selected with the remaining reproductive energy allocated to increased egg size. With other factors constant, eggs of smaller clutches will increase more in size than eggs of larger clutches when excess energy is divided among the eggs of a clutch. Secondly, unanticipated energy that may become available for reproduction during energy-rich years will similarly increase egg size a greater amount if divided among fewer eggs.  相似文献

The mechanism underlying the phase-dependent polyphenism in hatchling body coloration was studied by testing for a possible causal relationship with egg size in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. Crowd-reared (gregarious) females typically produce large, black offspring, whereas females reared in isolation (solitarious) deposit small, green offspring. We first tested for possible genetic differences in the role of egg foam by washing or separating eggs from two strains of locust. No solitarizing effect was found in either of the strains tested, supporting a previous finding, using another laboratory strain, to show that the hatchling body coloration and size are pre-determined in the ovary of the mother and no egg foam factor is involved in the control of the hatchling body coloration. Topical application of fenoxycarb, a juvenile hormone analog (JHA), and implantation of extra corpora allata (CA), taken from Locusta migratoria, caused gregarious female adults of S. gregaria to produce small eggs. Some eggs laid by CA-implanted females produced green hatchlings. All large eggs chosen among those deposited by gregarious females produced black hatchlings. When eggs were either kept on dry filter paper at nearly saturated relative humidity during embryogenesis or pricked with a needle so that some egg yolk was squeezed out, some produced small, green hatchlings. These results suggested that the amount of egg yolk or the availability of yolk material may determine the body coloration of hatchlings.  相似文献

A number of studies on birds have shown a positive correlation between egg mass and the growth (or survival) of chicks. However, a correlation based on non-experimental data does not demonstrate that egg mass affects growth, because it could be confounded by parental or territory quality. One way to see if pre-hatching attributes affect growth or survival is to swap hatchlings between nests, so that parental or territory quality do not confound correlations. I conducted such a fostering experiment on the blackbird, Turdus merula . Apart from very light eggs, that did not hatch, egg mass did not affect hatching success. Heavier eggs produced both heavier and larger nestlings. Nestlings raised by their own parents showed a positive correlation between hatchling mass and mass and size both early (day-4) and late (day-8) in the nestling period. The mass and size of fostered nestlings correlated with the mean mass of their natural parents' hatchlings, with higher coefficients early rather than late in the nestling period. By contrast, early in the nestling period there were no significant correlations of nestling mass or size and mean hatchling mass of the foster parents, but there were significant correlations late in the nestling period. Thus pre-hatching attributes of the egg do affect nestling size but environmental effects, including parental or territory quality, have an affect late in the nestling period. Direct manipulations of components of egg mass are required before one can conclude that egg mass affects growth, rather than some correlated pre-hatching attribute. There was no clear effect of egg mass on the probability that a hatching bird would survive until two weeks after fledging (shortly before nutritional independence), despite the fact that nestling mass does correlate with fledgling survival. I suggest that egg mass affects the 'size' component of mass and that juvenile survival depends on the 'condition' component of mass.  相似文献

We examined the effects of thermal and hydric environments on hatching success, the embryonic use of energy and hatchling traits in a colubrid snake, Elaphe carinata. The eggs were incubated at four temperatures ranging from 24 to 32 degrees C on substrates with water potentials of 0 and -220 kPa using a 4x2 factorial design. Both thermal and hydric environments affected the water exchange between eggs and their surroundings. Eggs incubated in wetter substrates gained mass throughout the course of incubation, whereas eggs in drier substrates gained mass during the first half of incubation and lost mass thereafter. Hatching success was noticeably higher at 26 and 30 degrees C than at 24 and 32 degrees C, but among treatments, differences in hatching success were not significant. Temperature significantly affected the duration of incubation and most hatchling traits examined. Deformed hatchlings were found in all temperature treatments, with more deformities observed at 32 degrees C. Hatchlings from eggs incubated at different temperatures differed in wet body mass, but the differences stemmed mainly from variation in water contents. Embryos at different temperatures completed development at nearly the same expenditure of energy and catabolized nearly the same amount of lipids, but hatchlings from different temperatures differed in the development condition of carcass at hatching. Hatchlings from eggs incubated at 26 degrees C were larger in SVL than those from other higher or lower incubation temperatures, characteristically having larger carcasses; hatchlings from 32 degrees C eggs were smaller in SVL and had smaller carcasses but larger residual yolks than those from lower incubation temperatures. Hatchlings from eggs incubated at 24 degrees C were shorter in tail length but greater in size (SVL)-specific body wet mass than those from higher incubation temperatures. Within the range from -220 to 0 kPa, the substrate water potential did not affect hatching success, the embryonic use of energy and all hatchling traits examined, and the effects of temperature were independent of the effects of substrate water potential. Therefore, our data add evidence showing that embryonic development in reptiles with pliable-shelled eggs is relatively insensitive to variation in hydric environments during incubation.  相似文献

We examine the importance of both the hydric environment ofnaturally incubating reptilian eggs and the energetic needsof hatchlings via an investigation of reproduction in Galapagosland iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus). Hatching success ofegg clutches and the size of subsequent hatchlings are bothpositively correlated with the water potential of natural nests,as predicted from previous laboratory experiments. Water potentialsrepresenting optimal incubation environments are available foronly a brief period in nature, and depend upon the same seasonalrainfall as does food abundance for the emerging hatchlings.The temporal placement of the reproductive season of Conolophussubcristatus balances these conflicting needs for water by eggsand energy by hatchlings. Oviposition occurs slightly beforesuitable water potentials are reached and hatchling emergenceoccurs after the peak in food abundance. Morphological adaptations by Conolophus subcristatus to theirprecarious reproductive phenology include greater amounts ofalbumen in their eggs, and greater energy reserves in emergenthatchlings than most other lizard species. These adaptationslessen the severity of an arid environment where water becomesavailable for periods too short to allow both oviposition andhatching to be temporally placed in an optimal manner.  相似文献

I used comparative and experimental analysis of egg size in a Sceloporus lizard to examine a fundamental tenet of life-history theory: the presumed trade-offs among offspring number, offspring size, and performance traits related to offspring size that are likely to influence fitness. I analyzed latitudinal and elevational patterns of egg life-history characteristics among populations and experimentally manipulated egg size and hatchling size by removing yolk from the eggs to examine the causal bases of population differences in offspring traits. Mean clutch size among populations increased to the north (seven vs. 12 eggs/clutch, California vs. Washington), whereas egg size decreased (0.65 g vs. 0.40 g). The elevational patterns in southern California paralleled the latitudinal trends. Several offspring life-history traits that are correlated with egg size also varied geographically; these traits included incubation time, hatchling size, growth rate, and hatchling sprint performance. Hatchling viability of experimentally reduced eggs was remarkably high (~70%), even when up to 50% of the yolk was removed. The experimentally reduced eggs and hatchlings demonstrated the degree to which size influences each of the offspring life-history traits considered. Northern eggs hatched sooner, in part because of their small size. Though growth rate is allometrically related to size within each population (i.e., smaller hatchlings grow faster on a mass-specific basis), population differences in growth rate, as measured in the laboratory, are likely to reflect genetic differentiation in the underlying physiology of growth. Moreover, smaller juveniles, because of experimental reduction, had slower sprint speeds than larger juveniles. The slower sprint speed of hatchlings from Washington compared to hatchlings from California is thus largely due to the fact that eggs are smaller in the Washington population. These results provide a basis for interpreting the evolutionary divergence of the suite of traits involved in the evolution of maternal investment per offspring in lizards. For example, evolutionary divergence in some offspring traits functionally related to size (e.g., sprint speed) may be constrained, relative to traits that are determined by other aspects of development or physiology (e.g., growth). I also discuss issues relating to the evolution of maternal investment that could be tested in laboratory and natural populations using experimentally reduced offspring.  相似文献

Few studies have collected longitudinal data that follow the complete microevolutionary path of an organism linking sources of variation (e.g. environmental versus genetic) to a trait and its subsequent relationship with fitness. Identifying the links within this pathway is imperative for understanding the ecological relevance of effects found at the phenotypic level. Furthermore, experimental studies that examine parts of the pathway in ectothermic organisms often fail to mimic the complexities of the natural developmental environment. Temperature and moisture conditions in reptile nests, for example, can fluctuate greatly on a seasonal and daily basis. Despite the potential effects of fluctuating environments, the vast majority of studies have held environmental treatments constant during the developmental period. We investigated the effects of fluctuating moisture regimes during incubation on eggs, hatchling phenotypes, and subsequent survival in the eastern fence lizard Sceloporus undulatus. Moisture fluctuations during embryonic development caused water absorption by eggs to follow the environmental availability of moisture. Initial hatchling tail length was affected by the pattern of moisture fluctuations, and hatchling growth rates in fluctuating treatments were significantly faster than those in a constant treatment, resulting in larger hatchlings after 4 weeks. A release–recapture experiment conducted in the field did not detect a treatment effect on survival despite the larger body sizes. In summary, although fluctuations affected water absorption by eggs and some hatchling traits, these effects did not have subsequent fitness consequences. A commercial turtle pond in South Louisiana was studied to identify the mechanism by which turtle hatchlings acquire Salmonella flora. The visceral organs and mature eggs removed from 31 adult gravid female turtles over the course of two egg-laying seasons and from 37 adult females during one winter dormant period were examined bacteriologically for Salmonella. Pond water, egg nest soil, and hatchlings produced by eggs removed from the oviducts and nest soil were also tested. Eighty-eight turtles hatched from eggs removed from the oviducts of 15 turtles at necropsy did not excrete or harbor systemically Salmonella, nor were these pathogens isolated from ovarian tissue or immature eggs. The findings suggest transovarian transmission of these pathogens does not occur frequently. Turtles hatched from eggs retrieved from soil nests 1 to 2 h after deposition harbor and excrete these organisms. This result coupled with the isolation of these pathogens from the cloaca, colon contents, and bursal fluid from 18 females captured in the act of egg laying supports the cloaca to egg and nest soil to egg mode for salmonellae infection in the resultant hatchling. Salmonella arizonae and Salmonella serogroups B, C2, and E1 were isolated from the cloaca, colon contents, pond water, and nest soil, and were excreted by hatchlings produced from eggs removed from the soil nests. These same serogroups were isolated from the colon contents of 19 of 37 females tested during the dormant period, suggesting the salmonellae persist in the pond environment in the adult throughout the year.  相似文献

In an experiment repeated for two separate years, incubation temperature was found to affect the body size and swimming performance of hatchling green turtles (Chelonia mydas). In the first year, hatchlings from eggs incubated at 26°C were larger in size than hatchlings from 28 and 30°C, whilst in the second year hatchlings from 25.5°C were similar in size to hatchings from 30°C. Clutch of origin influenced the size of hatchlings at all incubation temperatures even when differences in egg size were taken into account. In laboratory measurements of swimming performance, in seawater at 28°C, hatchlings from eggs incubated at 25.5 and 26°C had a lower stroke rate frequency and lower force output than hatchlings from 28 and 30°C. These differences appeared to be caused by the muscles of hatchlings from cooler temperatures fatiguing at a faster rate. Clutch of origin did not influence swimming performance. This finding that hatchling males incubated at lower temperature had reduced swimming ability may affect their survival whilst running the gauntlet of predators in shallow near-shore waters, prior to reaching the relative safety of the open sea.  相似文献

To investigate geographic adaptation of the migratory locust Locusta migratoria in China, locusts were collected from six localities, ranging from 47.4°N to 19.2°N. Using offspring from the various populations, we compared embryonic diapause, reproductive traits, cold‐hardiness and adult body size. The incidence of embryonic diapause was influenced by the genetic makeup, parental photoperiod, and incubation temperature of the eggs. The northern strain (47.4°N) produced diapause eggs under all photoperiodic conditions, whereas the other strains produced a higher proportion of diapause eggs when exposed to a short photoperiod. The incubation temperature greatly influenced diapause induction. At a low temperature, all eggs entered diapause, even some of those from a tropical strain (19.2°N) in which no diapause was induced at high temperatures. Photoperiodic changes during the parental generation affected the incidence of embryonic diapause. Diapause intensity decreased with decreasing original latitude. Cold hardiness was compared by exposing eggs in diapause to either ?10 or ?20°C for various periods; the northern strain was more cold‐hardy than the southern strain, although some eggs in the tropical strain were probably not in a state of diapause. Adult body size and head width showed a complicated pattern of variation along the latitudinal gradient, whereas egg pod size (egg pod width and egg number) and hatchling weight tended to decrease with decreasing latitude. These results reveal that L. migratoria has adapted to local environments and that the latitudinal gradient appears to play an important role in shaping L. migratoria life cycle and development.  相似文献

Egg size is a critical life-history trait in which maternal investment is optimized to maximize maternal fitness. The adaptive significance of variable egg size among spawning groups of Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) landlocked in the Lake Biwa system was examined through field investigations and rearing experiments. Observed egg size variations were explained by the water temperature around spawning grounds established near the mouths of inlet streams. Two typical streams with different incubation temperatures showed similar maternal body sizes and hatchling sizes, but eggs attached to the stream bed were larger in the colder stream. An experiment that used eggs from a single clutch showed that a smaller hatchling size was obtained with a lower incubation temperature, indicating that the effect of differences in egg size on hatchling size can be canceled out by variations in incubation temperature. In general, larvae that are less than a certain threshold of effective body size are not expected to be assured of early success among conspecifics competing for foods. It is proposed that environments in which the incubation temperature varies favor variability in egg size to ensure that sufficient food is accessible to larvae.  相似文献

Temperature acclimation of adult vertebrates typically induces changes in metabolic physiology. During early development, such metabolic compensation might have profound consequences, yet acclimation of metabolism is little studied in early life stages. We measured the effect of egg incubation temperature on resting metabolic rate (RMR) and blood thyroid hormone levels of hatchling snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina). Like many reptiles, snapping turtles have temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), in which embryonic temperature determines sex. Therefore, we designed the experiments to separately measure effects of temperature and of sex on the response variables. We incubated eggs in the laboratory at 21. 5 degrees, 24.5 degrees, 27.5 degrees, and 30.5 degrees C, producing both sexes, all males, both sexes, and all females, respectively. Hatchling RMR, when measured at a common temperature (either 25 degrees or 31 degrees C), was negatively correlated with egg temperature in both males and females, such that RMR of turtles from 21.5 degrees C-incubated eggs averaged 160% that of turtles from 30.5 degrees C-incubated eggs. These results indicate that egg temperatures induced positive metabolic compensation in both sexes. Thyroid hormone levels of hatchlings showed similar correlations with egg temperature; thyroxine level of turtles from 21.5 degrees C-incubated eggs averaged 220% that of turtles from 30.5 degrees C-incubated eggs. To examine the possibility that thyroid hormones contribute to positive metabolic compensation, we added triiodothyronine to eggs during mid-incubation. RMR of hatchlings from these treated eggs averaged 131% that of controls, consistent with the previous possibility. Moreover, the effects of embryonic temperature on metabolic physiology, in combination with effects on sex, can result in differences in RMR and thyroid hormone levels between male and female hatchling turtles. Such differences may be important to the ecology and evolution of TSD.  相似文献

The relationship between offspring size and offspring number is crucial to life history evolution. To examine how these two life history variables are coupled and whether an altered balance between them will result in changes in maternal fitness, we manipulated clutch size of the Chinese cobra (Naja atra) by using the techniques of hormonal manipulation and follicle ablation. Females receiving exogenous follicle-stimulating hormone produced more but smaller eggs, and females undergoing follicle ablation produced fewer but larger eggs. Neither body size (body mass and snout-vent length) at hatching nor egg mass at oviposition had a role in determining hatchling survival and growth. Female hatchlings were more likely to die in early post-hatching days and grew more slowly than male hatchlings. Our data show that: (1) there is a nonlinear continuum of egg size-number trade-offs in N. atra within which there is a single inflexion where the rate at which egg size decreases with increasing clutch size, or clutch size increases with decreasing egg size, is maximized; (2) there is a fixed upper limit to egg size for a given-sized female, and the limit is not determined by her body volume; (3) egg size has no role in determining hatchling survival and growth; and (4) the extent to which females may enjoy reproductive benefits in a given reproductive episode depends on how well egg size and egg number are balanced.  相似文献
