Cherry stillage is a high strength organic wastewater arising from the manufacture of alcoholic products by distillation of fermented cherries. It is made up of biorefractory polyphenols in addition to readily biodegradable organic matter. An anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (AnSBR) was used to treat cherry stillage at influent COD ranging from 5 to 50 g/L. Different cycle times were selected to test biomass organic loading rates (OLR(B)), from 0.3 to 1.2 g COD/g VSS.d. COD and TOC efficiency removals higher than 80% were achieved at influent COD up to 28.5 g/L but minimum OLR(B) tested. However, as a result of the temporary inhibition of acetogens and methanogens, volatile fatty acids (VFA) noticeably accumulated and methane production came to a transient standstill when operating at influent COD higher than 10 g/L. At these conditions, the AnSBR showed signs of instability and could not operate efficiently at OLR(B) higher than 0.3 g COD/g VSS.d. A feasible explanation for this inhibition is the presence of toxic polyphenols in cherry stillage. Thus, an ozonation step prior to the AnSBR was observed to be useful, since more than 75% of polyphenols could be removed by ozone. The integrated process was shown to be a suitable treatment technology as the following advantages compared to the single AnSBR treatment were observed: greater polyphenols and color removals, higher COD and TOC removal rates thus enabling the process to effectively operate at higher OLR, higher degree of biomethanation, and good stability with less risk of acidification.  相似文献

Treatment of wet corn-milling wastewater with filamentous fungi was investigated as a means of obtaining fungal biomass as an additional byproduct. Competitive bacterial growth is a common problem during this nonaseptic treatment process. Selective disinfection with ozone was evaluated for eliminating bacterial populations during fungal cultivation. Three laboratory-scale continuous flow aerated reactors were operated under nonaseptic conditions at 38 degrees C, hydraulic retention time of 8h and pH of 4. The bacterial population was reduced by one log with respect to the control when ozone was dosed at a concentration above 47+/-2mg/L. An ozone dosage of about 57mg/L was found to be most effective in improving both fungal biomass production and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) removal (up to 90%). Fungal biomass concentration increased from c. 1.45g/L (control) to c. 1.75g/L at a 57-mg/L ozone dosage. Higher and lower dosages of ozone resulted in poorer fungal growth and lower SCOD removal.  相似文献

Recycling of anaerobically-digested thin stillage within a corn-ethanol plant may result in the accumulation of nutrients of environmental concern in animal feed coproducts and inhibitory organic materials in the fermentation tank. Our focus is on anaerobic digestion of treated (centrifugation and lime addition) thin stillage. Suitability of digestate from anaerobic treatment for reuse as process water was also investigated. Experiments conducted at various inoculum-to-substrate ratios (ISRs) revealed that alkalinity is a critical parameter limiting digestibility of thin stillage. An ISR level of 2 appeared optimal based on high biogas production level (763 mL biogas/g volatile solids added) and organic matter removal (80.6% COD removal). The digester supernatant at this ISR level was found to contain both organic and inorganic constituents at levels that would cause no inhibition to ethanol fermentation. Anaerobic digestion of treated-thin stillage can be expected to improve the water and energy efficiencies of dry grind corn-ethanol plants.  相似文献

The performance of integrated aerobic digestion and ozonation for the treatment of high strength distillery wastewater (i.e., cherry stillage) is reported. Experiments were conducted in laboratory batch systems operating in draw and fill mode. For the biological step, activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment facility was used as inoculum, showing a high degree of activity to distillery wastewater. Thus, BOD and COD overall conversions of 95% and 82% were achieved, respectively. However, polyphenol content and absorbance at 254 nm (A(254)) could not be reduced more than 35% and 15%, respectively, by means of single biological oxidation. By considering COD as substrate, the aerobic digestion process followed a Contois' model kinetics, from which the maximum specific growth rate of microorganisms (mu(max)) and the inhibition factor, beta, were then evaluated at different conditions of temperature and pH. In the combined process, the effect of a post-ozonation stage was studied. The main goals achieved by the ozonation step were the removal of polyphenols and A(254). Therefore, ozonation was shown to be an appropriate technology to aid aerobic biological oxidation in the treatment of cherry stillage.  相似文献

The microbial degradation of thin stillage for environment-friendly treatment has been studied extensively in recent years, and useful compounds in the treated-thin stillage are expected to be utilized in the subsequent fermentation. In this study, an Aspergillus oryzae H18, suitable for growing in thin stillage, was isolated from soil and served to degrade the organic matter in thin stillage, with the increase in pH (from 3·75 to 4·8) and decrease in chemical oxygen demand (COD, 81·3% removal rate). The effect of thin stillage as backset water after degradation of the strain H18 on alcohol production in syrup liquid was investigated. Compared with zero addition of thin stillage, the alcohol yield in mixed syrup liquid increased by 8·6% when the concentration of treated-thin stillage was 20%. After the addition of nutrients at proper concentration (0·5% urea, 1% molasses, 0·25% NaCl, 0·2% NaH2PO4, 0·3% MgSO4 and 0·25% CaCl2) in thin stillage, the alcohol yield in yeast fermentation was increased by 32·7% when mixed syrup liquid (with 40% thin stillage treated by H18) was employed, in comparison to control group without thin stillage addition. Meanwhile, the fermentation time was shortened, and alcohol production rate was enhanced.  相似文献

Ozone inactivation of cell-associated viruses   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The inactivation of HEp-2 cell-associated poliovirus (Sabin 1) and coxsackievirus A9 was investigated in three experimental systems, using ozone as a disinfectant. The cell-associated viral samples were adjusted to a turbidity of 5 nephelometric turbidity units. The cell-associated poliovirus and coxsackievirus samples demonstrated survival in a continuous-flow ozonation system at applied ozone dosages of 4.06 and 4.68 mg/liter, respectively, for 30 s. Unassociated viral controls were inactivated by the application of 0.081 mg of ozone per liter for 10 s. Ultrasonic treatment of cell-associated enteric viruses did not increase inactivation of the cell-associated viruses. The batch reactor with a declining ozone residual did not effect total inactivation of either cell-associated enteric virus. These cell-associated viruses were completely inactivated after exposure to ozone in a batch reactor using continuous ozonation. Inactivation of cell-associated poliovirus required a 2-min contact period with an applied ozone dosage of 6.82 mg/liter and a residual ozone concentration of 4.70 mg/liter, whereas the coxsackievirus was completely inactivated after a 5-min exposure to an applied ozone dosage of 4.81 mg/liter with an ozone residual of 2.18 mg/liter. These data indicate that viruses associated with cells or cell fragments are protected from inactivation by ozone concentrations that readily inactivate purified virus. The cell-associated viral samples used in this research contained particles that were 10 to 15 microns in size. Use of a filtration system before ozonation would remove these particles, thereby facilitating inactivation of any remaining viruses associated with cellular fragments.  相似文献

The microalgal species Chlorella pyrenoidosa was cultivated in synthetic wastewater of initial chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate, and phosphate concentrations of 5000, 100, and 40 mg/L, respectively. The aim of the study was to find out the tolerance of microalgae to different COD concentrations and the extent of COD degradation at those concentrations. Three dilutions of wastewater (initial COD concentrations 5000, 3000, and 1000 mg/L) and three inoculum sizes (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 g/L) were considered for the study. The experimental parameters such as total organic carbon, total inorganic carbon, COD, optical density, total solids, nitrate, and phosphate were measured on a daily basis. Biodegradation kinetics was determined for all cases using first-order reaction and Monod degradation equations. Optimal results showed that up to 90% reduction in TOC was obtained for 1000 COD wastewater while only 38% reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) was achieved for 5000 COD wastewater. Over 95% reduction in nitrate and nearly 90% removal of phosphate were obtained with the lowest microalgal inoculum concentration (i.e., 0.1 g/L) for all COD dilutions. This study showed that microalgal species C. pyrenoidosa can successfully degrade the organic carbon source (i.e., acetate) with significant removal efficiencies for nitrate and phosphate.  相似文献

The feasibility of applying the UASB concept for the anaerobic treatment of stillage of distilleries in the sugar producing area of Argentina was subject to study. Results obtained in a 100-L UASB reactor treating stillages with COD values between 35 and 100 g COD/L are presented. Loading rates of up to 24 g COD/L/day were applied with an average COD removal of 75% and a biogas production of more than 9 L/L/day, with an average methane content of 58%. The settling velocity distribution of sludge particles would indicate a good formation of biomass pellets. System interruptions of months without feed and at ambient temperature (20-24 degrees C) were well tolerated.  相似文献

Attempts were made in this study to examine the effectiveness of polymer addition to the aeration tank effluent prior to sludge flotation as practiced in a slaughterhouse wastewater treatment plant. The plant currently uses 10 mg/l of polymer prior to sludge flotation, but alternative, less-expensive, chemicals such as alum could be equally effective. Therefore, experiments were conducted using the Standard Jar test to determine the performance of both alum (Al2SO4.6H2O) and organic polymer. The dosages used for alum ranged between 0 and 1000 mg/l, whereas polymer dosages varied between 0 and 90 mg/l. The (optimal) removal efficiency for suspended solids in the mixed liquor was obtained at 400 mg/l for alum and 30 mg/l for polymer. It is evident that addition of alum or polymer results in significant removal of suspended solids reaching up to 99% for alum and 96% for polymer but alum produced a more compacted sludge. Removal of filterable COD was much lower in both cases since the chemicals used target the colloidal and suspended portion of the COD rather than the soluble (filterable) part of the COD.  相似文献

Stillage obtained from ethanol production of grain sorghum was separated into two fractions: thin stillage and wet solids. A portion of the thin stillage was recycled as cooking water in subsequent fermentation runs using both bench- and full-scale ethanol production plants. When thin stillage replaced 50-75% of the cooking water, large increases occurred in solids content, COD, and EC of the resulting thin stillage. It was found that while the volume of thin stillage requiring treatment or disposal was reduced, there was little reduction in the total pollutant load. Stillage rcycling had little effect on the quality of the stillage wet solids fraction. At the high levels of stillage recycle used, ethanol yield was reduced after three to five runs of consecutive recycling.  相似文献

The anaerobic digestion of wood ethanol stillage in a UASB reactor was studied. At organic loading rates be low 16 kg COD/m(3) day the reactor performed effectively, achieving soluble COD and BOD removals in excess of 86 and 93%, respectively. Removal of color averaged 40%. At a loading rate of 16 kg COD/m(3) day the methane yield was 0.302 L CH(4) (STP)/g COD removed, and the observed cell yield was 0.112 g VSS/g COD removed. Operation of the reactor at higher loading rates was unsuccessful. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and alkalinity were supplemented. No additions of the essential trace elements Fe, Co, and Ni were required.  相似文献

Ozonation strategies to reduce sludge production of a seafood industry WWTP   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this work, several alternatives related to the application of ozone in different streams of a seafood industry WWTP were evaluated to minimize the production of waste sludge. The WWTP was composed of two coagulation-flocculation units and a biological unit and generated around of 6550 kg/d of sludge. Ozone was applied to sludge coming from flotation units (110 g TSS/L) at doses up to 0.03 g O(3)/g TSS during batch tests, no solids solubilization being observed. Ozone doses ranging from 0.007 to 0.02 g O(3)/g TSS were also applied to the raw wastewater in a bubble column reaching a 6.8% of TSS removal for the highest ozone dose. Finally, the effect of the pre-ozonation (0.05 g O(3)/g TSS) of wastewater coming from the first flotation unit was tested in two activated sludge systems during 70 days. Ozonation caused a reduction of the observed yield coefficient of biomass from 0.14 to 0.07g TSS/g COD(Tremoved) and a slight improvement of COD removal efficiencies. On the basis of the capacity for ozone production available in the industry, a maximum reduction of sludge generated by the WWTP of 7.5% could be expected.  相似文献

Batch experiments were performed to evaluate biodegradation of raw and ozonated oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) under denitrifying anoxic and nitrifying aerobic conditions for 33 days. The results showed both the anoxic and aerobic conditions are effective in degrading OSPW classical and oxidized naphthenic acids (NAs) with the aerobic conditions demonstrating higher removal efficiency. The reactors under nitrifying aerobic condition reduced the total classical NAs of raw OSPW by 69.1 %, with better efficiency for species of higher hydrophobicity. Compared with conventional aerobic reactor, nitrifying aerobic condition substantially shortened the NA degradation half-life to 16 days. The mild-dose ozonation remarkably accelerated the subsequent aerobic biodegradation of classical NAs within the first 14 days, especially for those with long carbon chains. Moreover, the ozone pretreatment enhanced the biological removal of OSPW classical NAs by leaving a considerably lower final residual concentration of 10.4 mg/L under anoxic conditions, and 5.7 mg/L under aerobic conditions. The combination of ozonation and nitrifying aerobic biodegradation removed total classical NAs by 76.5 % and total oxy-NAs (O3–O6) by 23.6 %. 454 Pyrosequencing revealed that microbial species capable of degrading recalcitrant hydrocarbons were dominant in all reactors. The most abundant genus in the raw and ozonated anoxic reactors was Thauera (~56 % in the raw OSPW anoxic reactor, and ~65 % in the ozonated OSPW anoxic reactor); whereas Rhodanobacter (~40 %) and Pseudomonas (~40 %) dominated the raw and ozonated aerobic reactors, respectively. Therefore, the combination of mild-dose ozone pretreatment and subsequent biological process could be a competent choice for OSPW treatment.  相似文献

In this work wine vinasses have been treated separately by means of a chemical ozonation and a biological aerobic degradation in an activated sludge system, and later by means of a combined process which consisted of an aerobic pretreatment followed by an ozonation treatment, in continuous reactors in all cases. In the ozonation experiments, the hydraulic retention time and the ozone partial pressure were varied leading to substrate removals in the range 4.4-16%, with increases in this removal when both operating variables were increased. A kinetic study, which combines mixed flow reactor model for the liquid phase and plug flow reactor model for the gas phase, allows to determine the rate constant for the ozone reaction and the consumption ratio, which are kO3 = 3.6 l/(g COD · h) and b = 22.5 g COD degraded/mol O3 consumed. The aerobic degradation experiments were conducted in the activated sludge system with variations in the retention time and influent organic substrate concentration in the wastewater. A modified Contois model applied to the experimental results leads to the determination of the kinetic parameters of that model: K1 = 5.43 l/g VSS and qmax = 6.29 g COD/(g VSS · h). Finally, the combined process reveals an improvement in the efficiency of the ozonation stage due to the previous aerobic treatment with increases in the substrate removal reached and in the rate constant obtained, the last one being kO3 = 5.6 l/(g COD · h).  相似文献

Isolation of astaxanthin-overproducing mutants of Phaffia rhodozyma   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
We isolated mutants of Phaffia rhodozyma strain NRRL Y-17269 that overproduced astaxanthin when grown on corn-based fuel ethanol stillage (thin stillage, TS, or fuel ethanol byproducts). Ten ml cultures of mutant strain JB2 produced 1.54 ± 0.21 mg carotenoid/mg dry weight when grown on 70% thin stillage at pH 5.2, compared with 0.38 ± 0.04 g/mg produced by the parental strain. Furthermore, JB2 produced similar astaxanthin concentrations when grown in either thin stillage or yeast malt broth. By comparison, previously described astaxanthin overproducing strain NRRL Y-17811 yielded 1.08 ± 0.07 g/mg in yeast malt broth but only 0.67 ± 0.03 g/mg in thin stillage. Five liter fermentation experiments using JB2 grown on 70% thin stillage at pH 5.2 yielded 2.01 ± 0.17 g/mg astaxanthin. Thus, JB2 is uniquely suited for astaxanthin production from low cost thin stillage.  相似文献

The corn based dry grind process is the most widely used method in the US for fuel ethanol production. Fermentation of corn to ethanol produces whole stillage after ethanol is removed by distillation. It is centrifuged to separate thin stillage from wet grains. Thin stillage contains 5–10% solids. To concentrate solids of thin stillage, it requires evaporation of large amounts of water and maintenance of evaporators. Evaporator maintenance requires excess evaporator capacity at the facility, increasing capital expenses, requiring plant slowdowns or shut downs and results in revenue losses. Membrane filtration is one method that could lead to improved value of thin stillage and may offer an alternative to evaporation. Fractionation of thin stillage using ultrafiltration was conducted to evaluate membranes as an alternative to evaporators in the ethanol industry. Two regenerated cellulose membranes with molecular weight cut offs of 10 and 100 kDa were evaluated. Total solids (suspended and soluble) contents recovered through membrane separation process were similar to those from commercial evaporators. Permeate flux decline of thin stillage using a resistance in series model was determined. Each of the four components of total resistance was evaluated experimentally. Effects of operating variables such as transmembrane pressure and temperature on permeate flux rate and resistances were determined and optimum conditions for maximum flux rates were evaluated. Model equations were developed to evaluate the resistance components that are responsible for fouling and to predict total flux decline with respect to time. Modeling results were in agreement with experimental results (R 2 > 0.98).  相似文献

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is one of the most widely used brominated flame retardants and has attracted more and more attention. In this work, the parent TBBPA with an initial concentration of 100 mg/L was completely removed after 6 min of ozonation at pH 8.0, and alkaline conditions favored a more rapid removal than acidic and neutral conditions. The presence of typical anions and humic acid did not significantly affect the degradation of TBBPA. The quenching test using isopropanol indicated that direct ozone oxidation played a dominant role during this process. Seventeen reaction intermediates and products were identified using an electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Notably, the generation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol was first observed in the degradation process of TBBPA. The evolution of reaction products showed that ozonation is an efficient treatment for removal of both TBBPA and intermediates. Sequential transformation of organic bromine to bromide and bromate was confirmed by ion chromatography analysis. Two primary reaction pathways that involve cleavage of central carbon atom and benzene ring cleavage concomitant with debromination were thus proposed and further justified by calculations of frontier electron densities. Furthermore, the total organic carbon data suggested a low mineralization rate, even after the complete removal of TBBPA. Meanwhile, the acute aqueous toxicity of reaction solutions to Photobacterium Phosphoreum and Daphnia magna was rapidly decreased during ozonation. In addition, no obvious difference in the attenuation of TBBPA was found by ozone oxidation using different water matrices, and the effectiveness in natural waters further demonstrates that ozonation can be adopted as a promising technique to treat TBBPA-contaminated waters.  相似文献

The Scenedesmus obliquus FSP-3, a species with excellent potential for CO2 capture and lipid production, was harvested using dispersed ozone flotation. While air aeration does not, ozone produces effective solid-liquid separation through flotation. Ozone dose applied for sufficient algal flotation is similar to those used in practical drinking waterworks. The algae removal rate, surface charge, and hydrophobicity of algal cells, and fluorescence characteristics and proteins and polysaccharides contents of algogenic organic matter (AOM) were determined during ozonation. Proteins released from tightly bound AOM are essential to modifying the hydrophobicity of bubble surfaces for easy cell attachment and to forming a top froth layer for collecting floating cells. Humic substances in the suspension scavenge dosed ozone that adversely affects ozone flotation efficiency of algal cells.  相似文献

Urban waste waters were treated with pure ozone or combinations of ozone, hydrogen peroxide and/or UV radiation to study the course of resulting BOD (biological oxygen demand)-time profiles and to propose a kinetic model. BOD-time profiles of chemically treated waste waters show an initial lag period that first order kinetic models cannot describe. A second order kinetic model is then proposed that satisfactorily fits experimental BOD-time profiles, except when hydrogen peroxide has been used. In these cases, BOD-time profiles present the highest lag periods observed. By applying this model, three parameters are determined: the biokinetic constant (k) which is an index of the biological removal rate; the potential amount of biodegradable matter (BODT), and the measure of the size of inocula and microbial activities of microoganisms (λ). The model was checked with experimental results of BOD-time profiles corresponding to both untreated and chemically ozonated urban waste waters. Ozonated waste waters showed the highest values of k and BODT, which implies an improvement of waste water biodegradability after ozonation. However, values of λ corresponding to ozonated waste waters presented lower values than those of untreated waste waters. This was due to the lag period observed in the BOD-time profile, which was a consequence of a lack of microorganism acclimation to ozonated waste waters. The effect of the ozone does, pH and carbonates during ozonation on COD (chemical oxygen demand) and the above indicated parameters was also studied. There was an optimum ozone dose which was 138 mg/l for this specific system. This led to the highest biodegradable fraction (φ) and the highest biokinetic constant (39% increase in φ and 4.7- fold increase in the value of k, respectively, compared to untreated waste waters.). Another significant fact was that a higher COD reduction was observed in the absence of carbonate during ozonation at basic pH values. In addition, the percentage of variation in the biodegradable fraction (Δφ) of ozonated waste water increased compared to the untreated waste water at acid pH. The results suggest that ozonolysis, the direct molecular ozone way of reaction, due to its selective character, increases the biodegradability of waste water more than other chemically advanced oxidation processes based on hydroxyl radical reactions.  相似文献
