Microbial reduction of soluble uranyl [U (VI)] to insoluble uraninite by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) is a promising remediation strategy for uranium-contaminated groundwater. Effects of environmental factors, including pH and coexisting ions, on U (VI) bioreduction processes (UBP) remain unknown. Anaerobic batch experiments were performed to evaluate impact on UBP. Kinetic investigations with varied pH demonstrated that U (VI) was reduced mostly within 48 h. The bioprecipitation yields depended strongly on pH, increasing from 12.9% to 99.4% at pH 2.0 and 6.0, respectively. Sulfate concentration 4000 mg l−1 did not affect UBP; however, sulfate concentration 5000 mg l−1 significantly slowed UBP. Biogenic H2S produced during sulfate reduction was not directly involved in UBP. At 20 mg l−1 Zn or 10 mg l−1 Cu, no UBP inhibition was observed and uraninite was detected in metal sulfide precipitate. However, 25 mg l−1 Zn or 15 mg l−1 Cu stopped UBP completely. Cu toxicity mechanism probably differed from Zn. The ability to reduce U (VI) was lost permanently with exposure to 15 mg l−1 Cu, but not for Zn 25 mg l−1. No uraninite could be detected before nitrate removal, suggesting nitrate strongly inhibited UBP, which may possibly be related to denitrification intermediates controlling the solution redox potential.  相似文献

Fallen timber is an important component of many aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems around much of the world. Its distribution and abundance has been extensively altered, especially over the past 200 years. While correlative evidence suggests that many species require fallen timber for them to occupy locations, there are few precisely controlled field experiments that show conclusively how species respond to variation in loads. We manipulated wood loads (ranging from 0 to 80 Mg ha−1) and monitored the response over 6 years of a species of marsupial, the yellow-footed antechinus Antechinus flavipes. The antechinus appeared to prefer locations having fallen-timber loads 20 Mg ha−1. Antechinuses avoided bare areas (i.e. 0 Mg ha−1) and areas having finer forms of woody material. Changes in densities of the antechinus in excess of those occurring in the control plots were clear after 2 years following manipulation of loads, and were even more pronounced after almost 6 years. Therefore, we are confident that higher loads are favoured by the antechinuses. There was no evidence of breeding success by females in sites with 20 Mg ha−1, and that the highest, consistent breeding activity was achieved at sites with the greatest fallen-timber loads (80 Mg ha−1). Our results, which experimentally were designed to address responses to fallen-timber loads, were complicated by perturbations caused by managed flooding episodes of the experimental area. Flooding appears to lead to population booms of the antechinus, most probably related to irruptions of prey species such as carabid beetles and wolf spiders, which are large-bodied and are prey for the antechinus. Nevertheless, we show that there are differences in densities in different wood-load treatments even against a background of boom-and-bust dynamics associated with flooding.  相似文献

A new chitosan derivative has been synthesized by crosslinking a metal complexing agent, [6,6′-piperazine-1,4-diyldimethylenebis (4-methyl-2-formyl) phenol] (L), with chitosan (CTS). The resulting material (CCTSL) was characterized by elemental (CHN), spectral (FTIR and solid-state NMR), thermal (TGA and DTA), and structural (powder XRD and SEM) analyses. Adsorption experiments (pH dependency, kinetics, and equilibrium) of CCTSL toward various metal ions such as Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) were carried out at 25 °C. The results showed that the adsorption was dependent on the pH of the solution, with a maximum capacity between pHs 6.5 and 8.5. The kinetics was evaluated by applying the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equation models and the equilibrium data were analyzed by Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 1.21 mmol g−1 for Cu(II) and the order of adsorption capacities for the metal(II) ions studied was found to be Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Cd(II)  Co(II)  Mn(II)  Fe(II)  Pb(II).  相似文献

The direct discharge of wastes from agricultural fields and livestock feedlots increases the concentration of nitrogen (N) in streams. This study was conducted to determine the impact of farm N budgets on stream water quality. In 1999–2000, we investigated an experimental livestock farm of 457 ha in the Kepau River watershed in Shizunai, Southern Hokkaido, Japan, where grasslands and maize fields account for 33% of the farm's total area. Annual N flow was calculated on the basis of the farm's land management records. Livestock was supplied with 15.2 t N yr−1 from agricultural lands, which made the farm 81% self-sufficient. Livestock excreta produced 17.2 t N yr−1, of which 4 t N yr−1 was lost, probably by ammonia volatilization during decomposition. Apart from manure, the major N inputs were 9.1 t N yr−1 of chemical fertilizers, 6.4 t N yr−1 of atmospheric deposition, and 12.6 t N yr−1 biological N fixation. The major outputs were uptake by forest vegetation of 11.0 t N yr−1, denitrification of 1.5 t N yr−1, and livestock feed production. Consequently, the annual surplus N on the whole farm was estimated to be 12.7 t N yr−1, which corresponds to 28 kg N ha−1 of agricultural land.The annual N load from the farm to the Kepau River was measured at 14.4 t N yr−1. Ninety percent of this load, however, occurred during rainfall and spring snowmelt. Within one 2-week snowmelt period, 5.0 t N was discharged, which corresponds to 35% of the annual load. Although the average N concentration of stream water below the farm was 2.8 mg N L−1, the maximum concentration recorded during the snowmelt season was 13.5 mg N L−1. The N concentration of the stream water increased and the silica (Si) concentration decreased as the stream flow rate increased. Consequently, the molar ratio of Si/N frequently dropped below 2.7, the critical level for the occurrence of eutrophication. The large N load during rainfall and snowmelt could be ascribed to open ditches, which collect tile drainage and surface runoff from the fields, discharging it directly to the river, bypassing the forested riparian zone.  相似文献

The effect of reduced application rate, soil temperature at shallow depth (2.5 cm), and soil type on the efficacy of Steinernema carpocapsae against the navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella, was evaluated in six field trials employing 1 m2 plots conducted from November 2003 through December 2004 in Madera and Kern Counties, California. Nematodes were applied at a concentration of 100,000 infective juveniles (IJs)/m2 (109/ha) in a volume of 187 ml water/m2 (1870 L/ha) with a post-application irrigation in all trials. Mortality ranged from 7.9 to 64.9% in successful trials and percent reduction in live larvae per plot was as high as 74.6%. Percent reduction and mortality were highly correlated (r2 = 0.78) and larval reduction typically was 10–11% greater than mortality for any treatment. In one trial, although nematode treatment significantly increased mortality compared to the controls, the treatment was deemed unsatisfactory because mortality was <15%. Soil temperature in this trial rose to 39 °C within 5 h after application. Nematodes failed in two other trials when soil temperature fell below freezing (minimum temperatures −3.0, −5.5 °C, respectively) several times in a 5-day period. We conclude that a commercially feasible application volume of 1870 L water/ha followed by post-application irrigation at this same rate was effective, and that soil maximum temperature at or below 32 °C during the first 24 h after application is necessary for treatment success.  相似文献

Montane moist evergreen broad-leaved forest, dominated byLithocarpus and Castanopsis species,is the most extensive stand of subtropical mountain in Yunnan Province, SWChina. Litter production, standing crop of litter on forest floor and nutrientreturn patterns were studied over nine years (1991–1999) in a stand ofprimary evergreen broad-leaved forest in northern crest of the Ailao MountainRange. There were significant yearly variations in litter production, which ismainly related with the masting year of canopy species, and exceptionalphysicalevents (strong winds and snow) in the natural forest. The mean annual smalllitterfall is 7.12 t ha–1 yr–1ofwhich leaf litter account for 65% of the total litterfall. The seasonality ofsmall litterfall was bia-modal, with the main one in the late dry season(April–May) and a lesser one in early winter (October–November).Decomposition quotient value was relatively low with 0.58 for total smalllitterfall. Mean large-wood ( 2.5 cm in diameter) ranged from0.21 to 1.41 t ha–1 yr–1 with amean of 0.52 t ha–1 yr–1.Concentrations of most elements in leaf and twig were slightly greater in wetmonths than dry months, except for C and K. Woody litter had low N and Pconcentrations compared with the leaf and reproductive parts. Eight formulations of Penicillium oxalicum (FOR1 to FOR8) were obtained by the addition of various ingredients, in two separate steps of the production and drying of P. oxalicum conidia. These formulations were then evaluated against tomato wilt in three glasshouse (G1 to G3) and two field (F1 and F2) experiments. All formulations were applied to seedlings in seedbeds 7 days before transplanting at a rate of 107 spores g−1 seedbed substrate. The conidial viability of each formulation was estimated by measuring germination just after fluid bed-drying, before seedbed application and after 1 and 2 years of storage at 4 °C under vacuum. The densities of P. oxalicum were estimated in the seedbed substrate and in the rhizosphere of three plants per treatment just before transplanting. Initial conidial viability of formulations just after fluid bed-drying was approx. 80%, except for FOR1, FOR4, and FOR7 which were 60%. The initial viability was maintained up to 40–50% for 2 years of storage at 4 °C under vacuum, except for FOR1. All formulations had 50% viability at application time. Populations of P. oxalicum in the seedbed substrate just before transplanting were >106 cfu g−1 soil in G3 and F2; populations in rhizosphere were also >106 cfu g−1 fresh root, except for FOR3, FOR5, and FOR6 in G2. A range of 22–64% of disease reduction was observed with all formulations, although these reductions were not significant (p = 0.05) for FOR1, FOR4, and FOR5 in any experiment. Contrast analysis showed significant differences between biological treatments and untreated control (p = 0.05) in all experiments, but no significant differences between biological and chemical treatments. Initial conidial viability of P. oxalicum in formulations and populations of P. oxalicum in the seedbed substrate explained 78.26% of the variability in P. oxalicum populations in tomato rhizosphere before transplanting. Disease incidence in untreated plants was negatively correlated (r = −0.54) with the percentage of disease control. The relationship between the viability of formulations, the populations of P. oxalicum in seedbed and rhizosphere, and the control of tomato wilt is discussed.  相似文献

Standard maize starch was hydrothermally treated by Instantaneous Controlled Pressure Drop (DIC) process at three pressure levels (1, 2 and 3 bar) corresponding to the temperatures of 100, 122 and 135 °C (at 13–27% moisture), respectively. The structural effects of various hydrothermal conditions were examined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. In order to understand the changes that occur during DIC treatment, melting endotherms of native maize starch at various moisture contents were determined. The gelatinization temperatures of DIC treated standard maize starch increased with DIC treatment. The transition temperatures (To, Tp) are closely related to the combined effect of pressure and processing time. At approximately 10 min of processing time, To and Tp were 65.7 and 72.3, 68.8 and 73.6 °C, 74.8 and 79.8 °C for pressure levels of 1, 2 and 3 bar, respectively (against 63.1 and 69.6 °C for native starch). DIC treatment narrowed the gelatinization temperature range and decreased gelatinization enthalpy (ΔH), as the severity of processing conditions increased. ΔH decreased from 11.4 J g−1 (native) to 11.0 (1 bar), 9.0 (2 bar) and 1.7 J g−1 (3 bar) for treated maize starch during approximately 10 min. Relative crystallinity of hydrothermally treated starch decreased with increasing DIC conditions. The A-type crystalline pattern was progressively lost (at pressure level 2 bar) and substituted by the Vh-type X-ray diffraction pattern, corresponding to the formation of amylose–lipid complexes. For severe DIC conditions (pressure level of 3 bar), the substitution was completed. Microscopic observations revealed progressive loss of the birefringence of DIC treated starch granules except at low pressure (1 bar), while the integrity of starch granules was preserved for all the conditions. These modifications that reveal important changes in the crystalline organization of the starch granules are related to their functional properties.  相似文献

Phosphorus cycling in a Mexican tropical dry forest ecosystem   总被引:10,自引:4,他引:6  
The study was conducted in five contiguous small watersheds (12–28 ha) gauged for long-term ecosystem research. Five 80 × 30 m plots were used for the study. We quantified inputs from the atmosphere, dissolved and particulate-bound losses, throughfall and litterfall fluxes, standing crop litter and soil available P pools. Mean P input and output for a six-year period was 0.16 and 0.06 kgha–1yr–1, respectively. Phosphorus concentration increased as rainfall moved through the canopy. Annual P returns in litterfall (3.88 kg/ha) represented more than 90% of the total aboveground nutrient return to the forest floor. Phosphorus concentration in standing litter (0.08%) was lower than that in litterfall (0.11%). Phosphorus content in the litterfall was higher at Chamela than at other tropical dry forests. Mean residence time on the forest floor was 1.2 yr for P and 1.3 yr for organic matter. Together these results suggest that the forest at Chamela may not be limited by P availability and suggest a balance between P immobilization and uptake. Comparison of P losses in stream water with input rates from the atmosphere for the six-year period showed that inputs were higher than outputs. Balances calculated for a wet and a dry year indicated a small P accumulation in both years.  相似文献

Background: A dysregulated growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) axis is well-recognized in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Decreased IGF-1 levels can also be found in chronic inflammatory diseases, while hyperglycemia promotes inflammatory cytokine production. Therefore, inflammatory cytokines may link poor metabolic control with GH/IGF-1 axis changes. This study examined the relationship between serum inflammatory cytokines and IGF-1 in adolescents (age 13–18) with TIDM in chronic poor (n = 17) or favorable (n = 19) glucose control. Poor control (PC) was defined as 3, consistent HbA1C > 9% during the previous 2 years, while favorable control (FC) was consistent levels of HbA1C < 9%. Results: HbA1C (FC: 7.5 ± 0.6%; PC: 10.5 ± 0.9%, p < 0.001) and interleukin (IL)-8 (FC: 3.7 ± 4.0 pg/ml; PC: 7.4 ± 4.3 pg/ml, p = 0.01) were increased and IGF-1 (FC: 536.5 ± 164.3 ng/ml; PC: 408.9 ± 157.1 ng/ml, p = 0.03) was decreased in patients with poor control compared to patients with favorable control. Moreover, IL-8 was inversely correlated with IGF-1 (r = −0.40, p = 0.03) and positively correlated with HbA1C (r = 0.36, p = 0.03). Conclusions: In adolescents with T1DM and chronic, poor glucose control, increased serum IL-8 is associated with reduced IGF-1 suggesting a pro-inflammatory milieu that may contribute to alterations in the GH/IGF-1 axis.  相似文献

A large part of the nutrient flux in deciduous forests is through fine root turnover, yet this process is seldom measured. As part of a nutrient cycling study, fine root dynamics were studied for two years at Huntington Forest in the Adirondack Mountain region of New York, USA. Root growth phenology was characterized using field rhizotrons, three methods were used to estimate fine root production, two methods were used to estimate fine root mortality, and decomposition was estimated using the buried bag technique. During both 1986 and 1987, fine root elongation began in early April, peaked during July and August, and nearly ceased by mid-October. Mean fine root ( 3 mm diameter) biomass in the surface 28-cm was 2.5 t ha–1 and necromass was 2.9 t ha–1. Annual decomposition rates ranged from 17 to 30% beneath the litter and 27 to 52% at a depth of 10 cm. Depending on the method used for estimation, fine root production ranged from 2.0 to 2.9 t ha–1, mortality ranged from 1.8 to 3.7 t ha–1 yr–1, and decomposition was 0.9 t ha–1 yr–1. Thus, turnover ranged from 0.8 to 1.2 yr–1. The nutrients that cycled through fine roots annually were 4.5–6.1 kg Ca, 1.1–1.4 kg Mg, 0.3–0.4 kg K, 1.2–1.7 kg P, 20.3–27.3 kg N, and 1.8–2.4 kg S ha–1. Fine root turnover was less important than leaf litterfall in the cycling of Ca and Mg and was similar to leaf litterfall in the amount of N, P, K and S cycled.  相似文献

Biomass and phosphorus distribution and accumulation rates wereestimated for an undisturbed subtropical rainforest in northernNew South Wales. The accumulation rates were estimated overa 16-year period. It is estimated that the steady-state above-groundbiomass for this forest is 35.0 tonne ha–1. Most of theannual biomass production was replacing litterfall and mortality.The above-ground forest contained 52 kg P ha–1 with agross annual accumulation of about 0.4 kg P ha–1/yr–1.The forest understorey and forest floor contained 4.7 kg P ha–1and 7.9 kg P ha–1, respectively. The annual uptake wasapprox. 4 kg P ha–1 yr–1. Typhoons are frequent on Okinawa Island, southwestern Japan. The effects of typhoon disturbance on the patterns of fine litterfall and related nutrient inputs in a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest were studied over 5 years from May 1996 to April 2001. Annual fine litterfall averaged 7558 kg ha−1 (range from 6188 to 9439 kg ha−1) for six sampling plots over 5 years, which differed significantly among years (p<0.001) but not among plots (p=0.122). A seasonal maximum was most evident for leaf litter component. Woody litter fell more irregularly through the year, and peak fall varied with typhoon and windstorm. The mean ratio of annual litterfall mass of sexual organs to leaves was 0.06, much lower than that in other tropical and subtropical rain forests. Nutrient concentrations varied in litterfall components, but were not significantly different among plots. The lowest concentrations of N and P in leaf litter were observed in March, which is also the month with the greatest leaf fall. However, the highest concentrations were recorded in typhoon season. Nitrogen and P concentrations were 34% and 106% greater in the green leaves that fell during typhoons than in senescent leaves. Mean nutrient inputs by litterfall were: N 83, P 3.2, K 25, Ca 71, Mg 19, Al 12, Na 10, Fe 0.86 and Mn 3.9 kg ha−1 yr−1, and differed significantly among years for all elements (p<0.0005) and among plots only for K (p<0.05) and Mn (p<0.0001). Typhoon disturbance strongly affected annual fine litterfall and related nutrient inputs, which contributed an average of 30% of the annual litterfall mass, and from 30% to 39% (for different nutrient elements) of annual total nutrient inputs. The results from this study suggest that typhoon-driven maintenance of rapid cycling of P and N and their high availability in soil appears to be an important mechanism to maintain productivity in the subtropical forest on Okinawa Island.  相似文献

Interleukin-6 and procalcitonin in children with sepsis and septic shock   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Objectives. To examine the behavior of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and procalcitonin (PCT) and verify whether they can be used to differentiate children with septic conditions. Methods. Septic children aged between 28 days and 14 years, prospectively enrolled from 01/2004 to 12/2005, were divided into sepsis (SG; n = 47) and septic shock (SSG; n = 43) groups. IL-6 and PCT were measured at admission (T0) and 12 h later (T12h). PCT results were classed as: 0.5 ng/mL = sepsis unlikely; 0.5 to <2 = sepsis possible; 2 to <10 = systemic inflammation; 10 = septic shock. Results. Ninety children were included. At T0, there was a higher frequency of SSG with higher PCT compared with SG [SSG: 30 (69.7%) > SG: 14 (29.8%); p < 0.05]. Similar results were observed at T12h. PRISM was significantly higher for SSG patients with higher PCT than SG patients. At T0, IL-6 levels were higher in SSG [SSG: 213.10 (10.85–396.70) > SG: 63.21 (0.86–409.82); p = 0.001], but not statistically different at T12h. IL-6 levels positively correlated with PRISM score in SSG patients at admission (p = 0.001; r = 0.86). Conclusion. PCT and IL-6 appear to be helpful in early assessment of pediatric sepsis, are of diagnostic value at admission, and are related to disease severity.  相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation on aerobic metabolism and the response of oxidative stress parameters in the digestive glands of the subpolar limpet Nacella (P.) magellanica. Sampling was carried out from July (winter) 2002 to July 2003 in Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Whole animal respiration rates increased in early spring as the animals spawned and remained elevated throughout summer and fall (winter: 0.09 ± 0.02 μmol O2 h− 1 g− 1; summer: 0.31 ± 0.06 μmol O2 h− 1 g− 1). Oxidative stress was assessed at the hydrophilic level as the ascorbyl radical content / ascorbate content ratio (A / AH). The A / AH ratio showed minimum values in winter (3.7 ± 0.2 10− 5 AU) and increased in summer (18 ± 5 10− 5 AU). A similar pattern was observed for lipid radical content (122 ± 29 pmol mg− 1 fresh mass [FW] in winter and 314 ± 45 pmol mg− 1 FW in summer), iron content (0.99 ± 0.07 and 2.7 ± 0.6 nmol mg− 1 FW in winter and summer, respectively) and catalase activity (2.9 ± 0.2 and 7 ± 1 U mg− 1 FW in winter and summer, respectively). Since nitrogen derived radicals are thought to be critically involved in oxidative metabolism in cells, nitric oxide content was measured and a significant difference in the content of the Fe–MGD–NO adduct in digestive glands from winter and summer animals was observed. Together, the data indicate that both oxygen and nitrogen radical generation rates in N. (P.) magellanica are strongly dependent on season.  相似文献

We report on soil leaching of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) along transects across exposed edges of four coniferous and four deciduous forest stands. In a 64-m edge zone, DIN leaching below the main rooting zone was enhanced relative to the interior (at 128 m from the edge) by 21 and 14 kg N ha−1 y−1 in the coniferous and deciduous forest stands, respectively. However, the patterns of DIN leaching did not univocally reflect those of DIN throughfall deposition. DIN leaching in the first 20 m of the edges was lower than at 32–64 m from the edge (17 vs. 36 kg N ha−1 y−1 and 15 vs. 24 kg N ha−1 y−1 in the coniferous and deciduous forests, respectively). Nitrogen stocks in the mineral topsoil (0–30 cm) were, on average, 943 kg N ha−1 higher at the outer edges than in the interior, indicating that N retention in the soil is probably one of the processes involved in the relatively low DIN leaching in the outer edges. We suggest that a complex of edge effects on biogeochemical processes occurs at the forest edges as a result of the interaction between microclimate, tree dynamics (growth and litterfall), and atmospheric deposition of N and base cations.  相似文献

Oligonucleotide chip-based assays can be a sample-thrifty, time-saving, routine tool for evaluation of chemical-induced DNA strand breaks. This article describes a novel approach using an oligonucleotide chip to determine photosensitizer-induced DNA single-strand breaks. Surface coverage of fluorophore-labeled oligonucleotides on silicon dioxide chip surfaces was determined on alkaline phosphatase digestion. Fluorescence maxima (at 520 nm) of the solutions were converted to molar concentrations of the fluorescein-modified oligonucleotide by interpolation from a predetermined standard linear calibration curve. The photosensitizing activity of chlorpromazine and triflupromazine toward DNA single-strand breaks was then studied at different drug doses and also as a function of photoirradiation time. Photoinduced single-strand breaks calculated using the method described here agreed with values predicted by theoretical extrapolation of the single-strand breaks obtained for plasmid DNAs from agarose gel electrophoresis, and thereby indirectly validated the chip-based assays. Under UV irradiation (93.6 kJ/m2) chlorpromazine (0.08 mM) was found to have significant photogenotoxicity. However, triflupromazine did not exhibit any (photo)genotoxicity over the concentration range studied (0.04–0.20 mM). The method developed will be useful for quantitative screening of drug genotoxicity in terms of induction of breaks in DNA.  相似文献

Historically, Pterocarpus officinalisJacq. (Leguminoseae) dominated freshwater wetlands in the coastal plains of Puerto Rico, but deforestation has reduced its distribution to small patches adjacent to mangrove forests in areas of higher salinity. The objective of this study was to determine how a gradient in soil salinity affected litter, flower, and fruit production in a Pterocarpus officinalis.Three 100 m2 plots were established in each of three sites along a salinity gradient: pasture/Pterocarpus edge (low salinity, mean salinity at 60 cm–9.7 g Kg–1), Pterocarpus forest (intermediate salinity, 11.5 g Kg–1) and a Pterocarpus/mangrove ecotone (high salinity, 15.0 g Kg–1). Across this gradient, P. officinalis accounted for 100% of the relative basal area in the low and intermediate sites and 43% in the high salinity site which was domimated by Laguncularia racemosa. The basal area of P. officinalis decreased along the gradient from 73.5 m2 ha–1 in the low salinity site to 42.0 m2 ha–1 in the high salinity site. Litterfall was sampled on average every 23 days in 45 0.25 m2 traps (5 traps per plot) for two years. Annual litterfall for the forest was 11.9 Mg ha–1 yr–1. Peaks in litterfall were associated with high precipitation in May 1995 and tropical storms in September 1995. Leaf fall of P. officinalis was significantly higher in the low salinity site (4.8 Mg ha–1 yr–1) than the high salinity site (1.8 Mg ha–1 yr–1), but total stand litterfall was greatest in the area of high salinity due to the greater contribution of L. racemosa. Pterocarpus flower and fruit production was approximately 10 times greater in low and intermediate salinity sites in comparison with the high salinity site. An increase in global temperature, will lead to higher sea level and higher soil salinity in costal wetlands. To conserve this wetland forest type it is critical to expand the distribution into areas of lower salinity where this species occurred historically.  相似文献

The species–area relationship (SAR) has been extensively studied in a wide range of plant communities, but very few studies have directly addressed how plant communities affect the SAR and what are the underlying mechanisms. Many graminoids form distinct tussocks where many other plant species grow, but no study has investigated whether the SAR holds true for the vegetation on tussocks. In four plant communities on an abandoned subalpine pasture in the Swiss National Park, we made releves on 600 tussocks of Carex sempervirens and measured tussock basal area and other tussock traits. In all four communities, species richness on C. sempervirens tussocks was strongly positively related to tussock basal area (R20.74), while other tussock traits explained very little (R2<0.04). Slope and intercept of the SAR on C. sempervirens tussocks differed significantly among the four communities. This was because plant communities affected richness in smaller tussocks (basal diameter <10 cm) but not that in large tussocks (basal diameter10 cm). We conclude that the SAR holds true for vegetation on C. sempervirens tussocks and changes with plant communities. Changes in the SAR on C. sempervirens tussocks are very likely because smaller tussocks are less independent of the plant communities than the larger ones, regarding disturbance or nutrients.  相似文献

Objective: To study the significance of persistent (12 months) new autoantibodies, in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) patients treated with either Infliximab (INFL) or Etanercept (ET) for 2 years. Patients-methods: 26 children under INFL (n = 12) or ET (n = 14) were prospectively studied. A large panel of autoantibodies was tested using indirect immunofluorescence (ANA, anti-dsDNA, anti-ENA, SMA, LKM, AMA, PCA, anti-R1, ATA), ELISA (ANA, anti-ENA, anti-cardiolipin, ANCA), immunoblotting assay (anti-ENA: anti-Ro, anti-La, anti-Sm, anti-URNP, anti-Jo, anti-Scl70, anti-centromere, anti-ribosomal and anti-histone) and rate nephelometry (RF). Results: Apart from the positive patients for ANA (13/26) and RF (2/26) prior to anti-TNF treatment, 6/26 patients (23%) developed new autoantibodies (SMA, anti-R1, ATA) which persisted for 12–50 months. None developed antibodies to nuclear antigens. In only one case, ATA was associated with the development of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Conclusions: These findings indicate that in JIA patients in contrast to adult RA patients, development of new autoantibodies to various nuclear antigens is rare. Other non relevant to rheumatic diseases autoantibodies, may appear and persist for >12 months, but very rarely they may be related to clinical entities, especially in the presence of a positive family history of autoimmunity.  相似文献
