Deficiencies in Cu, Se, and Zn impair one or more biochemical functions, and excess are associated with toxicity. Baseline
studies on the Ghanaian population are scanty. The study was undertaken to determine whether significant rural/urban differences
in the serum levels of Cu, Se, and Zn did exist. Forty males/60 females from rural and 50 males/50 females from urban Ghanaian
communities were sampled. Serum Cu, Se, and Zn were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Cu level for rural
and urban subjects was 997 ± 333 and 979 ± 290 μg/L, respectively (p = 0.68). However, Cu levels were significantly higher in the rural females (1,063 ± 367 μg/L) than the rural males (898 ± 249 μg/L;
p = 0.0085). Se levels for rural/urban subjects were 97 ± 36 and 87 ± 31 μg/L, respectively (p = 0.03). Zn levels in the rural/urban subjects were 312 ± 218 and 150 ± 102 μg/L, respectively (p = 0.002). Additionally, Zn was significantly higher in rural females (428 ± 204 μg/L) than the urban females (166 ± 103 μg/L;
p = 0.0002). Finally, Zn was significantly higher in rural females (428 ± 204 μg/L) than males (172 ± 116 μg/L; p = 0.0028). In conclusion, Cu, Se, and Zn were higher in the rural group compared to the urban group, and the generally low
Zn levels were confirmed in another cohort follow-up study. 相似文献

Although there are many studies on effect of fluoride on trace elements in experimental animals, few studies exist on serum
trace elements levels in patients with endemic fluorosis. We aimed to determine the serum levels of trace elements including
serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and serum levels of minerals including calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sodium
(Na), potassium (K) in patients with endemic fluorosis. The study group consisted of 30 patients with endemic fluorosis (17
females, 13 males, mean age 33.53 ± 9.85 years). An age, gender, and body mass index matched 30 healthy volunteers comprised
control group (21 females, ten males with a mean age 33.93 ± 7.39 years). Urine fluoride levels of chronic fluorosis patients
were significantly higher than that of control subjects as expected (1.92 ± 0.10 mg/l vs. 0.41 ± 0.09 mg/l, respectively;
P < 0.001). Serum Cu levels (89.14 ± 16.77 μg/dL vs. 102.69 ± 25.04 μg/dL, respectively, P = 0.017), serum Zn levels (77.98 ± 20.58 μg/dL vs. 94.57 ± 35.87μg/dL, respectively, P = 0.032), and serum Mg levels (1.92 ± 0.18 mg/dL vs. 2.07 ± 0.31 mg/dL, respectively, p = 0.022) was significantly lower in chronic fluorosis patients than in controls. There were no statistically significant
differences between the fluorosis group and control group with respect to serum levels of Na, K, Ca, and P. We concluded that
chronic fluorosis is associated with reduced serum levels of Cu, Zn, and Mg. 相似文献

In this cross-sectional study, selenium (Se) levels in the sera of 35 hemodialysis (HD) patients and 34 patients undergoing
continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for more than 3 months were compared with the serum Se levels of 34 healthy
volunteers. The observed Se levels of 100.8 ± 51.9 μg/L in the sera of the HD patients and of 65.5 ± 32.1 μg/L in the sera
of the CAPD patients were significantly lower than the 134.9 ± 81.2 μg/L of the controls, with p = 0.002 and 0.02, respectively. Furthermore, the Se levels were significantly higher in the HD rather than the CAPD patients
(p = 0.01). In the spent dialysate effluent fluid of 32 of the CAPD patients Se was undetectable, in the remaining two CAPD
patients the Se levels were 1.9 and 4.6μg/l, respectively. The low Se levels of HD and CAPD patients as compared to healthy
persons are attributed to diminished Se retention due to chronic oxidative stress. 相似文献

Selenium concentrations in the blood of 112 (56 females and 56 males) normal subjects, from different regions of the Punjab
(Pakistan), have been determined using the technique of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The whole blood selenium
concentrations were found to be 452 ± 12 ppb (parts per billion or nano-gram of Se per gram freeze-dried blood or 96 ± 3 μg/L
), with 470 ± 16 ppb (or 100 ± 4 μg/L) in female and 435 ± 16 ppb (or 92 ± 4 μg/L) in male population. Compared with other

Premature graying of hair with unclear etiology, which is known as premature canities, is a common cause of referrals to the
dermatologists. We assessed the relationship between serum iron, copper, and zinc concentrations with premature canities.
This study was conducted on patients under 20 years old suffering from premature canities, having a minimum of ten gray hair
fibers, and referring to university hospitals of Isfahan (Iran). The results were compared with age–sex-matched controls.
Demographic data and disease characteristics were recorded for two groups. We studied serum iron, copper, and zinc concentrations
of 66 patients and 66 controls using atomic absorption and Ferrozine methods. The mean age of studied cases was 17.8 ± 2.0 years,
and the mean age of the onset of canities was 15.5 ± 3.2 years with no significant difference between males and females (P > 0.05). Serum copper concentration was significantly lower in patients compared with controls (90.7 ± 37.4 vs. 105.3 ± 50.2 μg/dL,
P = 0.048), but serum iron concentration was significantly lower in controls compared to patients (88.8 ± 39.5 vs. 108.3 ± 48.4 μg/dL,
P = 0.008). Also, there was no significant difference between patients and controls in serum zinc concentration (114.8 ± 67.8
vs. 108.2 ± 49.9 μg/dL, P = 0.285). According to these results, among copper, zinc, and iron, a low serum copper concentration may play a role in premature
graying of hairs in our society. Further studies are needed to find the underlying mechanism of this relationship. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the respiratory function disorders that could be related to dust exposure during
the production of copper mine in copper mineworkers (CMWs). The study included 75 male CMWs (mean age, 32.0 ± 7.1 years, 58.6%
smokers) and 75 male age- and smoking status-matched healthy control subjects. Serum Cu level was significantly higher in
the CMW group (0.80 ± 0.62 μg/ml) than the control group (0.60 ± 0.39 μg/ml) (p = 0.017). Significant negative correlations were found between serum Cu level and forced expiratory volume in first second
(r = −0.600; p < 0.001) and between serum Cu level and forced vital capacity (r = −0.593; p = <0.001) in CMWs. Serum Cu level was significantly higher in the restrictive type pulmonary function disorders group (1.36 ± 0.62 μg/ml)
than obstructive type (0.90 ± 0.55 μg/ml) and normal pulmonary function pattern group (0.53 ± 0.43 μg/ml) (p < 0.001). Patients with radiological parenchymal abnormalities had significantly higher serum copper levels than those without
abnormalities (1.53 ± 0.52 vs. 0.71 ± 0.52 μg/ml, respectively; p = 0.002). In conclusion, result of the study has shown a negative association between pulmonary functions disorders and radiological

The quality of the diet of obese children is poor. Eating habits may alter micronutrient status in obese patients. In this
study, we determined the serum levels of selenium, zinc, vanadium, molybdenum, iron, copper, beryllium, boron, chromium, manganese,
cobalt, silver, barium, aluminum, nickel, cadmium, mercury, and lead in obese Turkish children. Thirty-four obese and 33 healthy
control subjects were enrolled in the study. Serum vanadium and cobalt levels of obese children were significantly lower than
those of the control group (0.244 ± 0.0179 vs. 0.261 ± 0.012 μg/l, p < 0.001, and 0.14 ± 0.13 vs. 0.24 ± 0.15 μg/l, p = 0.011, respectively). There was no significant difference between groups regarding the other serum trace element levels.
In conclusion, there may be alterations in the serum levels of trace elements in obese children and these alterations may
have a role in the pathogenesis of obesity. 相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals. Stropharia rugoso-annulata is a nutritional and functional mushroom containing many kinds of bioactive ingredients. The aims of this study were to investigate
the Se-enrichment characteristics of S. rugoso-annulata in submerged culture and evaluate the antioxidant activities of Se-enriched mycelia in vivo in terms of the values of glutathione
peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA). The optimum parameters of Se-enrichment under
the optimal Se concentration (150 μg/mL) in media were as follows: biomass 8.11 ± 0.25 g/L, Se content in mycelia 4,727.68 ± 13 μg/g,
Se-accumulated rate 24.68 ± 1.67%, and percentage of organic Se 96.27 ± 3.26%. The mainly subsistent forms of selenium in
Se-enriched mycelia were selenoprotein and selenium-polysaccharide. The contents of total amino acids (TAA) and essential
amino acids (EAA) in Se-enriched mycelia were increased by 13.5 ± 1.09% and 12.8 ± 0.89%, respectively. It was efficient for
Se-enriched mycelia to elevate GSH-Px and SOD activities and decrease MDA content. These results indicated that Se-enriched
mycelia of S. rugoso-annulata represent a novel dietary source of bioavailable supplemental selenium. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine serum selenium (Se) levels during the development of liver disease as well as the possible Se supplementation benefits in liver disease patients. Serum was collected from 187 patients with liver diseases and 120 normal healthy people living in Seoul. The samples were collected at the Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital College of Medicines, The Catholic University of Korea, in accordance with procedures approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Catholic University of Korea. Serum Se levels were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and were compared between healthy and liver diseases patients. Se levels were 92.65?±?32.50?μg/l in hepatitis infection, 92.33?±?30.66?μg/l in hepatitis B virus infection and 96.41?±?51.50?μg/l in hepatitis C virus infection, 96.42?±?32.80?μg/l in cirrhosis, and 67.47?±?14.30?μg/l in hepatoma patients. Findings were significantly lower in hepatitis and hepatoma as compared with the healthy participants (P?0.001). The Se level of the healthy population was 108.38?±?29.50, 119.37?±?28.31 for males and 97.87?±?26.99?μg/l for females. Our data shows the same parallelism between liver disease progression and decrease of Se levels except in the case of liver cirrhosis. And also, our study confirms the previous findings of significantly lower Se levels in Korean hepatoma patients. Se levels that decrease parallel to liver disease progression should be further integrated and analyzed with liver function blood biomarkers. 相似文献

Zinc (Zn) deficiency and obesity can be observed together in some developing countries. Zn deficiency may enhance fat deposition
and decrease lean mass accrual, which in turn, appears to influence physical activity (PA), although this has not yet been
evaluated in obese children. The objective of the study was to find out the association between measurements of plasma Zn
and serum leptin, body composition, and PA in Chilean obese preschool children. Seventy-two 18- to 36-month-old obese children
[weight-for-length/height z score (WHZ) > 2.0 SD], belonging to low socioeconomic communities, participated in the study. Plasma Zn, serum leptin, weight,
waist circumference, height, total body water (TBW) assessed by deuterium isotopic dilution technique and daily activity,
measured by registering 48 h with an accelerometer, were evaluated. We found 82% of children with WHZ > 3 SD. The geometric
mean Zn intake was 6.2 ± 2.5 mg/day. The mean plasma Zn was 91.8 ± 11.4 μg/dL, with 10% of the children having levels <80 μg/dL.
No correlation was found between plasma Zn concentrations and either weight, WHZ, or waist circumference. Serum leptin was
lower in males than in females (2.9 ± 2.8 vs 6.8 ± 5.0 ng/mL, respectively; p < 0.001). TBW was different between males and females (56.2 ± 5.4 vs 52.8 ± 4.3% body weight, respectively; p = 0.004), but no significant association was found between TBW and plasma Zn. Moderate + intense PA, (as percentage of wake
time), was greater in males than in females (6.3 ± 3.1% vs 3.4 ± 2.3%, respectively; p < 0.001), but it was not significantly correlated to plasma Zn. In conclusion, plasma Zn was not associated with body composition
as assessed by TBW, serum leptin, or with the magnitude of physical activity in Chilean overweight preschool children. 相似文献

Sixty-three patients with endemic fluorosis (36 males/27 females; mean age 33.9 ± 8.6 years) and 45 age-, sex-, and body mass
index-matched healthy controls (30 males/15 females; mean age 32.7 ± 8.8 years) were included in this study. Aortic stiffness
indices, aortic strain (AS), aortic distensibility (AD), and aortic strain index (ASI) were calculated from the aortic diameters
measured by echocardiography and blood pressure obtained by sphygmomanometry. The urine fluoride levels of fluorosis patients
were significantly higher than control subjects as expected (1.9 ± 0.1 mg/l vs. 0.4 ± 0.1 mg/l, respectively; P < 0.001). AS and AD were significantly lower in fluorosis patients than in the controls (for AS 5.3 ± 3.6 vs. 8.0 ± 3.4%;
P < 0.001 and for AD 0.2 ± 0.1 vs. 0.3 ± 0.1 cm2 dyn−1 10−3; P < 0.001, respectively). In contrast, signicantly higher ASI was observed in fluorosis patients than in the controls (3.4 ± 0.6
vs. 3.0 ± 0.4; P < 0.001, respectively). The results of our study demonstrate that elastic properties of ascending aorta are impaired in patients

The taxonomy of Saimiri is controversial because morphological characteristics, traditionally used for identification, are insufficient to distinguish
species and subspecies. Genetic studies of specimens become relevant for captive management, especially considering their
frequently unknown geographical origin. We analyzed phenotypic and genetic parameters in Saimiri spp. in Argentinean zoological gardens and biological stations to provide a more accurate taxonomic identification. We studied
27 males and 19 females of Saimiri spp. The cytogenetic analysis in mitotic metaphases corroborated a modal number of 2N = 44, XX/XY, and FN = 75 for males
and FN = 76 for females. G- and C-bands, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and the pelage coloration pattern of all the specimens corresponded to Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis. We characterized for the first time the sperm cell morphology and morphometry (mean ± SE): total length: 71.39 ± 5.40 μm;
head length: 5.71 ± 0.81 μm; head width: 3.76 ± 0.70 μm; acrosome length: 3.70 ± 0.82 μm; midpiece length: 12.20 ± 2.22 μm.
Researchers can use the characterization of the sperm morphology as another parameter for taxonomic identification that, together
with cytogenetic and molecular ones, would allow a more precise identification of individual Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis. 相似文献

The trace element selenium is an essential micronutrient for human health and its low levels in serum are implicated in the
pathogenesis of several chronic diseases. Therefore, the determination of total selenium in serum may contribute to the assessment
of the health and nutritional status of certain populations. The objective of the present work was to determine total selenium
in the serum of 506 healthy volunteers that participated in the ATTICA study. Selenium was determined in serum by using the
technique of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The mean serum selenium concentration was determined to be 91.8 ± 33.7 μg/L
(N = 506); 87.6% of women and 88.5% of men had serum selenium concentration below 125 μg/L, the cutoff considered to be required
for optimal glutathione peroxidase activity. No association was found between serum selenium levels and the gender of the
participants while a significant decline of selenium with age (p < 0.0001) was observed. According to our results, no anthropometric, lifestyle, nutritional, or biochemical indices were
able to affect the association between serum selenium and age. This result may indicate that other factors such as selenium
distribution as well as retention may be affecting the relationship between serum selenium and age. 相似文献

The objective of the present study is to calculate linear regressions between a mother and her child with respect to their
selenium concentration (ng/g) in the following traits: maternal blood and umbilical cord blood, maternal and child hair, maternal
milk and child umbilical cord blood, maternal milk and meconium, maternal blood plasma, and child meconium. The data were
collected at Research Hospital of the University of Yüzüncü Yıl from 30 pairs of mothers and their newborn baby. The mean
maternal serum Se level in 30 mothers was 68.52 ± 3.57 ng/g and cord plasma level was 119.90 ± 18.08 ng/g. The Se concentration
in maternal and neonatal hair was 330.84 ± 39.03 and 1,124.76 ± 186.84 ng/g, respectively. The Se concentration of maternal
milk at day 14 after delivery was determined as 68.63 ± 7.78 ng/g (n = 13) and the concentration of Se was 418.90 ± 45.49 ng/g (n = 22) for meconium of neonatal. There was no significant difference between maternal blood and milk Se levels. However, hair
Se concentration was significantly higher than milk and maternal blood Se level. For each trait comparison, the average absolute
difference in log10-transformed Se concentration was calculated between a mother and her child. The observed average absolute difference was
compared with a test distribution of 1,000 resampled bootstrap averages where the number of samples was maintained but the
relationship between a mother and her child was randomized among samples (α = 0.05). 相似文献

The sialic acid/glycosaminoglycan ratio was determined in 35 coronary artery ectasia patients and 35 control subjects to determine
the possible role of fluoride in the etiology of the disease. The coronary artery ectasia patients and controls were selected
from subjects who underwent coronary angiography. The mean serum sialic acid level was significantly lower in patients with
coronary artery ectasia (CAE) than in controls (340.3 ± 28.6 vs. 427.0 ± 15.9 μg/mL, respectively; p < 0.001). The mean serum glycosaminoglycan level was significantly higher in patients with CAE than in controls (5,013.1 ± 158.6
vs. 3,833.6 ± 237.1 μg/mL, respectively; p < 0.001). The sialic acid/glycosaminoglycan ratio in patients with coronary artery ectasia was significantly lower than in
controls (0.068 ± 0.007 vs. 0.111 ± 0.005; p < 0.001). There was more than 38.7% reduction in this ratio in patients with CAE when compared with controls. We demonstrated
that chronic fluoride exposure has an important role in pathogenesis of coronary artery ectasia. 相似文献

Eight young female camels shared in four groups of two 2 years received a basal diet enriched respectively with 0, 2, 4, and
8 mg selenium under sodium selenite form for 64 days. Feed intake was assessed daily; blood samples were taken on weekly basis.
One camel from each group was killed at the end of the experiment. Se concentration in serum was increased significantly in
the supplemented groups with an average of 176.3 ± 18.0 ng/mL in the control group, 382.7 ± 107.6 in the group receiving 2 mg
Se, 519.8 ± 168.4 in the group receiving 4 mg Se, and 533.4 ± 158.6 in the group receiving 8 mg Se daily. For glutathione
peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, the control group (51.0 IU/g Hb) and the group receiving 2 mg (50.5 IU/g Hb) were significantly
different than groups receiving 4 and 8 mg (respectively, 65.9 and 76.1 IU/g Hb). No significant variation occurred for vitamin
E (mean, 0.56 ± 0.23 ng/mL). Significant correlation between serum Se and GSH-Px was reported. Kidney was the richest organ
in selenium followed by lung, spleen, and liver, but the increase in supplemented groups was more marked in liver and kidney.
The hair seemed to be the best indicator of selenium intake in camel. 相似文献

Five brands of antidiabetic herbal formulations as tablets, Diabetex, Divya Madhu Nashini, Jambrushila, Diabeticin, and Madhumeh Nashini, from different pharmacies were analyzed for six minor (Na, K, Ca, Cl, Mg, and P) and 20 trace (As, Ba, Br, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs,
Cu, Fe, Hg, La, Mn, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Th, V, and Zn) elements by thermal neutron irradiation followed by high-resolution
gamma ray spectrometry. Further Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Most elements vary
in a narrow range by a factor of 2–4 while a few others vary in a wide range, e.g., Na (0.05–0.67 mg/g), Mn (26.7–250 μg/g),
and V (0.26–2.50 μg/g). All the five brands contain K, Cl, Mg, P, and Ca as minor constituents along with mean trace amounts
of Cr (2.11 ± 0.67 μg/g), Cu (15.7 ± 7.11 μg/g), Fe (459 ± 171 μg/g), Mn (143 ± 23 μg/g), Se (238 ± 112 ng/g), and V (0.99 ± 0.93 μg/g).
Jambrushila is enriched in Na, Ca, Mg, Cl, Fe, Cu, Se, and Zn, essential nutrients responsible for curing diabetes. Dietary intake of
Mn, Fe, and Cu are greater than 10% of the recommended dietary allowance, whereas that for Zn and Se is less than 2%. Mean
contents of toxic elements (As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were found below permissible limits except in Jambrushila. Cr and Zn were inversely correlated with r = −0.81, whereas Rb and Cs exhibit linear correlation (r = 0.93) in five brands. C, H, N analysis showed C ∼ 55%, H ∼ 12%, and N ∼ 2% with a total of ∼70% organic matter. However,
thermal decomposition studies at 700°C suggest less than 5% nonvolatile metal oxides. Herbal formulations contain minor and
trace elements in bioavailable forms that favorably influence glucose tolerance and possibly increase the body’s ability to

Diabetic nephropathy is a complication of diabetes mellitus. This present study investigates the status of copper and magnesium
in diabetic nephropathy cases to establish a possible relation. Forty patients of diabetic nephropathy participated in the
study as cases. Forty age- and sex-matched healthy individuals served as controls. Blood samples were collected from both
cases and controls for determination of FBS, PPBS, HbA1c, microalbumin, copper, and magnesium levels. The mean concentrations
of FBS, PPBS, HbA1c, and microalbumin of cases were significantly higher than that of controls. The mean magnesium levels
of cases (1.60 ± 0.32 meq/L) were significantly lower than controls 2.14 ± 0.16 meq/L (p < 0.05).
