Low density occurrence of large carnivore species and direct hunting of predators and prey make carnivore conservation complex. Vital baseline information on population status of large carnivores is still deficient in most forests of eastern Himalaya, which are known to be the biodiversity hotspots. To fill this information gap, we estimated the large carnivore population status and abundance in an intricate eastern Himalayan lowland tropical forest in Pakke Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh. Population status and abundance estimates of tigers and leopards were made through individual identification using closed capture-recapture sampling. To estimate the dhole abundance photographic encounter rate was used. For individually non-identifiable species photographic rate seemed to correlate well with animal abundance. The estimated tiger and leopard density through 1/2 MMDM was 2.14 ± 0.04/100 km2 and 2.99 ± 1.13/100 km2 respectively. Maximum likelihood estimates shows density of tiger 1.86 ± 0.7 and for leopard 2.82 ± 1.2.The estimated dhole abundance was (N) 10.6 ± 0.94, and density 6.62 ± 0.58 individuals in 100 km2. Further, occupancy estimation of large carnivores may be tried along with assessing the comparative efficacy of other population estimation methods to establish better monitoring methods for this region.  相似文献

Solitary felids are commonly associated with structurally complex habitats, where their foraging success is attributed to stealth and remaining undetected by competitive scavengers. Research in North America suggests that pumas (Puma concolor), a wide-ranging species found throughout the Americas, conform to the general characteristics of solitary felids and avoid open grasslands with aggregating prey. Researchers hypothesize that pumas are limited to structurally complex habitats in North America because of pressures from other large, terrestrial competitors. We explored the spatial ecology of pumas in open habitat with aggregating prey in Chilean Patagonia, where pumas lack large, terrestrial competitors. We tracked 11 pumas over 30 months (intensive location data for 9 pumas with GPS collars for 9.33 ± 5.66 months each) in an area where mixed steppe grasslands composed 53% of the study area and carried 98% of available prey biomass, to track resource use relative to availability, assess daily movements, quantify home ranges and calculate their density. As determined by location data and kill sites, Patagonia pumas were primarily associated with open habitats with high prey biomass, but at finer scales, preferentially selected for habitat with complex structure. On average, pumas traveled 13.42 ± 2.50 km per day. Estimated 95% fixed kernel home ranges averaged 98 ± 31.8 km2 for females and 211 ± 138.8 km2 for males, with high spatial overlap within and between the sexes. In a multivariate analysis, available prey biomass was the strongest predictor of variation in the size of an individual puma's home range. Finally, we determined a total puma density of 3.44 pumas/100 km2, a significantly smaller estimate than previously reported for Patagonia, but similar to densities reported for North America.  相似文献

The annual leaf growth and shoot dynamics of Thalassia testudinum were examined in a meadow located near Havana City, Cuba, using direct censuses between January 1995 and January 1996. The net rate of shoot population change, specific shoot recruitment and mortality rates were calculated as the difference between the densities of shoots (tagged or untagged) in consecutive sampling events. The leaf biomass, the daily production, the turnover rate and the rate of leaf biomass loss were also estimated. The estimated mean dry leaf biomass (124.9 ± 9.5 g m−2), daily dry leaf production (3.3 ± 0.2 g m−2 day−1) and turnover rate (2.7 ± 0.1% day−1) were comparable to values previously reported for this species in Cuba and elsewhere. The production of leaves and shoots were higher in spring, declined towards mid summer, and showed the minimum values in January. Shoot recruitment prevailed over shoot mortality from January to March and from July to August, whereas most of the annual shoot mortality occurred between May and July and between August and October. The meadow examined was in close demographic balance along the study period. The results demonstrate that direct census provides reliable estimates of rapid shoot dynamics in T. testudinum.  相似文献

A study of the meadows of the invasive Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea (Sonder) Verlaque, Huisman et Boudouresque was carried out over one year at Marseilles (Provence, France) where the alga is thriving, probably since 1994, in the cold waters of the north western Mediterranean Sea. At an early phase of colonisation, the C. racemosa meadow is characterized by a patchy distribution pattern. Several years are necessary to obtain a dense and continuous meadow. In one area colonized for more than 4 years, C. racemosa has developed a continuous meadow with wide seasonal variations. Maximum development was reached in autumn (biomass: 82 ± 3 g DW m−2; length of stolons: 1162 ± 86 m m−2; number of apices: 8360 ± 405 m−2; number of erect axes: 20955 ± 1499 m−2) and the minimum from winter to early spring (respectively, 0.3 ± 0.1 g DW m−2; 3 ± 1 m m−2; 220 ± 55 apices m−2; 35 ± 15 erect axes m−2). Seasonal variations in the growth rate were highly significant. The season of high growth lasted from June to October. The apical growth rate of a stolon reached a maximum of 7.5 ± 0.3 mm day−1 in early October, then began to decrease significantly from the end of October to December, before becoming nearly nil from January to early May. Annual net production rate expressed in terms of stolon length and biomass was estimated as 5801 m m−2 a−1 and 612 g DW m−2 a−1, respectively. During the growth period, the turnover rate of the C. racemosa stolons was estimated at from 25 to 46 days. The growth rate was closely correlated to the seawater temperature (R2 = 0.83), whereas no significant correlation was found between growth and irradiance. During the growth period, a decrease in temperature rapidly affects the growth rate, which soon recovers its earlier level when the temperature rises again. In winter, the growth rate decreased rapidly with the seasonal drop in the seawater temperature. Grazing by fish (Sarpa salpa and Boops boops) can also affect the growth rate from September to December by consumption of the erect axes and stolon apices, enhancing the ramification of stolons. Seasonal changes at Marseilles are much sharper than those reported for warmer Mediterranean localities (French Riviera, Italy, Croatia): in winter and early spring C. racemosa meadows decreased and locally disappeared, leaving a barren substrate. C. racemosa survives the lower winter seawater temperatures of the north-western Mediterranean Sea probably in the form of zygotes and/or small fragments (rhizoids, stolons, propagules).  相似文献

We investigated the effect of intraspecific competition on growth parameters and photosynthesis of the salt marsh species Atriplex prostrata Boucher in order to distinguish the effects of density-dependent growth inhibition from salt stress. High plant density caused a reduction of 30% in height, 82% in stem dry mass, 80% in leaf dry mass, and 95% in root dry mass. High density also induced a pronounced 72% reduction in leaf area, 29% decrease in length of mature internodes and 50% decline in net photosynthetic rate. The alteration of net photosynthesis paralleled growth inhibition, decreasing from 7.6 ± 0.9 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 at low density to 3.5 ± 0.4 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 at high density, indicating growth inhibition caused by intraspecific competition is mainly due to a decline in net photosynthesis rate. Plants grown at high density also exhibited a reduction in stomatal conductance from 0.7 ± 0.1 mol H2O m−2 s−1 at low density to 0.3 ± 0.1 mol H2O m−2 s−1 at high density and a reduction in transpiration rate from 6.0 ± 0.3 mmol H2O m−2 s−1 at low density to 4.3 ± 0.3 mmol H2O m−2 s−1 at high density. Biomass production was inhibited by an increase in plant density, which reduced the rate of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and leaf area of plants.  相似文献

CH4 and CO2 fluxes across the water–atmosphere interface were measured over a 24 h day–night cycle in a shallow oxbow lake colonized by the water chestnut (Trapa natans L.) (Lanca di Po, Northern Italy). Only exchanges mediated by macrophytes were measured, whilst gas ebullition was not considered in this study. Measurements were performed from 29 to 30 July 2005 with short incubations, when T. natans stands covered the whole basin surface with a mean dry biomass of 504 ± 91 g m−2. Overall, the oxbow lake resulted net heterotrophic with plant and microbial respiration largely exceeding carbon fixation by photosynthesis. The water chestnut stand was a net sink of CO2 during the day-light period (−60.5 ± 8.5 mmol m−2 d−1) but it was a net source at night (207.6 ± 6.1 mmol m−2 d−1), when the greatest CO2 efflux rate was measured across the water surface (28.2 ± 2.4 mmol m−2 h−1). The highest CH4 effluxes (6.6 ± 1.8 mmol m−2 h−1) were determined in the T. natans stand during day-time, whilst CH4 emissions across the plant-free water surface were greatest at night (6.8 ± 2.1 mmol m−2 h−1). Therefore, we assumed that the water chestnut enhanced methane delivery to the atmosphere. On a daily basis, the oxbow lake was a net source to the atmosphere of both CO2 (147.1 ± 10.8 mmol m−2 d−1) and CH4 (116.3 ± 8.0 mmol m−2 d−1).  相似文献

At present there is no standardised heat tolerance test (HTT) procedure adopting a running mode of exercise. Current HTTs may misdiagnose a runner's susceptibility to a hyperthermic state due to differences in exercise intensity. The current study aimed to establish the repeatability of a practical running test to evaluate individual's ability to tolerate exercise heat stress. Sixteen (8M, 8F) participants performed the running HTT (RHTT) (30 min, 9 km h−1, 2% elevation) on two separate occasions in a hot environment (40 °C and 40% relative humidity). There were no differences in peak rectal temperature (RHTT1: 38.82±0.47 °C, RHTT2: 38.86±0.49 °C, Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC)=0.93, typical error of measure (TEM)=0.13 °C), peak skin temperature (RHTT1: 38.12±0.45, RHTT2: 38.11±0.45 °C, ICC=0.79, TEM=0.30 °C), peak heart rate (RHTT1: 182±15 beats min−1, RHTT2: 183±15 beats min−1, ICC=0.99, TEM=2 beats min−1), nor sweat rate (1721±675 g h−1, 1716±745 g h−1, ICC=0.95, TEM=162 g h−1) between RHTT1 and RHTT2 (p>0.05). Results demonstrate good agreement, strong correlations and small differences between repeated trials, and the TEM values suggest low within-participant variability. The RHTT was effective in differentiating between individuals physiological responses; supporting a heat tolerance continuum. The findings suggest the RHTT is a repeatable measure of physiological strain in the heat and may be used to assess the effectiveness of acute and chronic heat alleviating procedures.  相似文献

Patch dynamics of the Mediterranean slow-growing seagrass Posidonia oceanica was studied in two shallow sites (3–10 m) of the Balearic Archipelago (Spain) through repeated censuses (1–2 year−1). In the sheltered site of Es Port Bay (Cabrera Island), initial patch density (October 2001) was low: 0.05 patches m−2, and the patch size (number of shoots) distribution was bimodal: most of the patches had less than 6 shoots or between 20 and 50 shoots. Mean patch recruitment in Es Port Bay (0.006 ± 0.002 patches m−2 year−1) exceeded mean patch loss (0.001 ± 0.001 patches m−2 year−1), yielding positive net patch recruitment (0.004 ± 0.003 patches m−2 year−1) and a slightly increased patch density 3 years later (July 2004, 0.06 patches m−2). In the exposed site of S’Estanyol, the initial patch density was higher (1.38 patches m−2, August 2003), and patch size frequency decreased exponentially with size. Patch recruitment (0.26 patches m−2 year−1) and loss (0.24 patches m−2 year−1) were high, yielding a slightly increased patch density in the area 1 year later (October 2004, 1.40 patches m−2). Most recruited patches consisted of rooting vegetative fragments of 1–2 shoots. Seedling recruitment was observed in Summer 2004 at both sites. Episodic, seedling recruitment comprised 30% and 25% of total patch recruitment in Es Port Bay and S’Estanyol, respectively. Patch survival increased with patch size and no direct removal was observed among patches of 5 shoots or more. Most patches grew along the study, shifting patch distribution towards larger sizes. Within the size range studied (1–150 shoots), absolute shoot recruitment (shoots year−1) increased linearly with patch size (R2 = 0.64, p < 4 × 10−5, N = 125), while specific shoot recruitment was constant (about 0.25 ± 0.05 year−1), although its variance was large for small patches. Given the slow growth rate and the high survival of patches with 5 or more shoots, even the low patch recruitment rates reported here could play a significant role in the colonisation process of P. oceanica.  相似文献

An annual cycle of biomass and productivity of wild celery (Vallisneria americana) was studied in Kings Bay, FL, USA. In situ growth rates were measured monthly between March 2001 and June 2002 in high-density stands, using a modified hole-punching technique, and applied to shoot density data to obtain areal estimates of production. Mean shoot density varied greatly over the study period, ranging between 200 and 800 shoots m−2. Mean total biomass ranged between 162 and 1013 g m−2, with aboveground material comprising, on average, 70% of total biomass. Total annual estimated production of new attached shoots was 519 g m−2. Leaf growth rates peaked at >50 mg shoot−1 d−1, and mass-specific leaf growth ranged 0.6–1.8% d−1. Annually, individual shoots produced 7.4 g of leaf material and completely replaced standing leaf biomass 3.5 times. Areal leaf production was highest in late spring/summer of 2001, and ranged between 3.6 and 23.0 g m−2 d−1. Annual total leaf production was 2704 g m−2. Seasonality was not apparent in most variables monitored monthly; only 1 of the 64 relationships we examined between environmental variables (nutrients, chlorophyll a, and irradiance) and Vallisneria biological variables were significant, with relative growth rate increasing linearly with irradiance. Peak biomass and productivity of Vallisneria in Kings Bay were high compared to literature values for other Vallisneria populations as well as global averages for well-studied seagrasses, emphasizing the potential importance of Vallisneria to whole ecosystem functioning in springs, lakes, and oligohaline reaches of many estuaries.  相似文献

Many studies have investigated the ecology of wolf populations of Eurasia, showing that although wolves are mostly opportunistic in seeking meso-large enough mammalian prey, they can also be selective, depending on local availability of prey and their population biomass. Yet prey preferences of the wolf have been poorly evaluated in situations of complex predator/prey systems because such ecological situations are extremely rare in Europe. In particular, the role of beaver is poorly known due to the extreme decline in its range and population over the last few centuries. We conducted a 15-year study (1999–2014) of wolf Canis lupus diet in the Naliboki forest of central-western Belarus to determine the dietary responses of the wolf population in a context of a rich prey supply (beaver 650 inds/100 km2, elk 47 inds/100 km2, red deer 98 inds/100 km, roe deer 398 inds/100 km2, wild boar 234 inds/100 km2). The bison, although present, is not preyed on. We compared the seasonal and annual diet variations of both wolf adults and pups, by scat analysis and hair identification. In winter 2012–2013, the winter was quite harsh with a long period of snow, which severely affected the roe deer and wild boar populations. Five severe summer droughts also occurred (1999, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2013), greatly decreasing the water level in rivers and canals. We took advantage of these stressful events to evaluate the diet responses of the wolves. In “normal” years, we identified 11 food categories, essentially beaver and medium-sized ungulates (66%), and large ungulates to a lesser extent (9% in summer, 20% in winter). The adults were found to selectively supply pups with beaver, probably because of its easy transportability. Beaver consumption also increased during summer droughts when water levels were very low. After the harsh winter of 2012–2013, which was followed by a sharp decline in medium-sized prey, we observed a shift in the winter diet breadth of the wolves towards greater consumption of both large wild ungulates and small carnivores. We concluded that:1. Beaver is a functional element in wolf ecology, as a primary food for adults and pups;2. A large range of available prey species is important to maintaining a viable wolf population in cases of extreme climatic events.  相似文献

Realizing the importance of forest carbon monitoring and reporting in climate change, the present study was conducted to derive spectrally modeled aboveground biomass and mitigation using Landsat data in combination with sampled field inventory data in the coniferous forests of Western Himalaya. After conducting preliminary survey in 2009, 90 quadrats (45 each for calibration and validation) of 0.1 ha were laid in six forest types for recording field inventory data viz. diameter at breast height, height, slope and aspect. Biomass carbon (Mg ha 1) was worked out for different forest types and crown density classes (open with 10–40% crown density and closed with > 40% crown density) using recommended volume equations, ratios and factors. Biomass carbon map (aboveground + belowground) was generated for the entire region using geospatial techniques. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was generated and spectral values were extracted to establish relation (R2 = 0.72, p < 0.01) with the field inventory data. The model developed was validated (R2 = 0.73, p < 0.01) with 45 sample observations not used earlier for predicting and generating biomass carbon map (2009) for the entire region. The data from field based inventory indicates highest total biomass carbon (171.40, σ ± 23.19) Mg ha 1 for Fir–Spruce (closed) which has relatively more mature girth classes and low tree density. This value was found to be significantly higher than other forest types. Lowest biomass carbon was observed for Blue Pine (open) (37.15, σ ± 11.82) Mg ha 1. The NDVI values for the entire region ranged from 0 to 0.62 and consequently the spectrally derived aboveground biomass carbon varied from 0 to 600 Mg ha 1. The study demonstrates the application of mapping, spectral responses and sampled field inventory for type wise assessment of carbon mitigation in temperate coniferous forests of Himalayas.  相似文献

To investigate tropical roles of the newly described Yihiella yeosuensis (ca. 8 μm in cell size), one of the smallest phototrophic dinoflagellates in marine ecosystems, its trophic mode and the types of prey species that Y. yeosuensis can feed upon were explored. Growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis on its optimal prey, Pyramimonas sp. (Prasinophyceae), as a function of prey concentration were measured. Additionally, growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis on the other edible prey, Teleaulax sp. (Cryptophyceae), were also determined for a single prey concentration at which both these rates of Y. yeosuensis on Pyramimonas sp. were saturated. Among bacteria and diverse algal prey tested, Y. yeosuensis fed only on small Pyramimonas sp. and Teleaulax sp. (both cell sizes = 5.6 μm). With increasing mean prey concentrations, both specific growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis increased rapidly before saturating at a mean Pyramimonas concentration of 109 ng C mL−1 (2725 cells mL−1). The maximum growth rate (mixotrophic growth) of Y. yeosuensis fed with Pyramimonas sp. at 20 °C under a 14:10-h light-dark cycle of 20 μE m−2 s−1 was 1.32 d−1, whereas the growth rate of Y. yeosuensis without added prey was 0.026 d−1. The maximum ingestion rate of Y. yeosuensis fed with Pyramimonas sp. was 0.37 ng C predator−1 d−1 (9.3 cells predator−1 d−1). At a Teleaulax concentration of 1130 ng C mL−1 (66,240 cells mL−1), growth and ingestion rates of Y. yeosuensis fed with Teleaulax sp. were 1.285 d−1 and 0.38 ng C predator−1 d−1 (22.4 cells predator−1 d−1), respectively. Thus, Y. yeosuensis rarely grows without mixotrophy, and mixotrophy supports high growth rates in Y. yeosuensis. Y. yeosuensis has the highest maximum mixotrophic growth rate with the exception of Ansanella graniferaamong engulfment feeding mixotrophic dinoflagellates. However, the high swimming speed of Y. yeosuensis (1572 μm s−1), almost the highest among phototrophic dinoflagellates, may prevent autotrophic growth. This evidence suggests that Y. yeosuensis may be an effective mixotrophic dinoflagellate predator on Pyramimonas and Teleaulax, and occurs abundantly during or after blooms of these two prey species.  相似文献

Functional response is basic to any investigation of predator–prey relationships. In this study, the functional response of female Scymnus syriacus Marseul (Col.: Coccinellidae) to different densities (10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100) of third instar nymphs of Aphis gossypii Glover as prey was studied in an open patch experiment in a growth chamber (25 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16L:8D h ). Using logistic regression, a type II functional response for female Scymnus syriacus was determined. The searching efficiency (a') and handling time (Th) of the female predator using non linear least-square regression were estimated as 0.0769 ± 0.0136 h? 1 and 0.3103 ± 0.0438 h., respectively. Mean times required for the female predator to settle in a patch were 10.20 ± 4.28, 6.58 ± 2.58, 12.58 ± 4.50, 4.53 ± 1.48, 5.14 ± 2.59, 3.87 ± 3.52 min at different prey densities, respectively. Maximum theoretical predation rate (T/Th) estimated by Rogers' model for the female predator was 77.34. The proportion of female predators remaining in open patches at the end of the experiment was dependent on prey density (R2 = 0.876). The type of functional response obtained here agrees with studies on this predator in closed patches.  相似文献

Seed bank samples were collected from Huli Marsh, a subtropical shallow water mountainous marsh in Hunan Province, South China. Core samples were divided into upper and lower layers (each 5 cm in depth) and allowed to germinate in three water levels (0, 5 and 10 cm) over a 4-month period. A total of 51 species germinated and the mean density was 9211 ± 7188 seedlings m−2. In the top 5 cm 41 species and 5747 ± 5111 seedlings m−2 germinated, whereas 40 species and 3464 ± 3363 seedlings m−2 did so from 5–10 cm. Germinated seedling density was significantly higher in the upper layer, largely due to differences in eight species. With increasing experimental water depth, less seedlings germinated: respectively, 9788 ± 7157 m−2, 2050 ± 2412 m−2 and 1978 ± 2616 m−2, of 44, 21 and 19 species, submerged under 0, 5 or 10 cm. Seven species could emerge only in 0 water level. Vallisneria natans occurred only in 5 cm water, whereas Ottelia alismoides occurred in 10 cm water. In the vegetation survey of the marsh, 25 species were recorded, which was less than half of the species recorded in the seed bank. The top 10 dominants in the standing vegetation, accounting for 89% of vegetation abundance, represented only 10% in the seed bank. Twenty germinated species that also occurred in the standing vegetation accounted for 56% of the total seed bank. Our observed number of species germinating from a Chinese wetland seed bank is within the range observed elsewhere in the northern hemisphere (15–113 species).  相似文献

Dual purpose systems that treat wastewater and produce lipid rich microalgae biomass have been indicated as an option with great potential for production of biodiesel at a competitive cost. The aim of the present work was to develop a dual purpose system for the treatment of the anaerobic effluents from pig waste utilizing Neochloris oleoabundans and to evaluate its growth, lipid content and lipid profile of the harvested biomass and the removal of nutrients from the media. Cultures of N. oleoabundans were established in 4 L flat plate photobioreactors using diluted effluents from two different types of anaerobic filters, one packed with ceramic material (D1) and another one packed with volcanic gravel (D2). Maximum biomass concentration in D1 was 0.63 g L−1 which was significantly higher than the one found in D2 (0.55 g L−1). Cultures were very efficient at nutrient removal: 98% for NNH4+ and 98% for PO43−. Regarding total lipid content, diluted eflluents from D2 promoted a biomass containing 27.4% (dry weight) and D1 a biomass containing 22.4% (dry weight). Maximum lipid productivity was also higher in D2 compared to D1 (6.27 ± 0.62 mg L−1 d−1 vs. 5.12 ± 0.12 mg L−1 d−1). Concerning the FAMEs profile in diluted effluents, the most abundant one was C18:1, followed by C18:2 and C16:0. The profile in D2 contained less C18:3 (linolenic acid) than the one in D1 (4.37% vs. 5.55%). In conclusion, this is the first report demonstrating that cultures of N. oleoabundans treating anaerobic effluents from pig waste are very efficient at nutrient removal and a biomass rich in lipids can be recovered. The maximum total lipid content and the most convenient FAMEs profile were obtained using effluents from a digester packed with volcanic gravel.  相似文献

PurposeTo analyse the correlations between the eye lens dose estimates performed with dosimeters placed next to the eyes of paediatric interventional cardiologists working with a biplane system, the personal dose equivalent measured on the thorax and the patient dose.MethodsThe eye lens dose was estimated in terms of Hp(0.07) on a monthly basis, placing optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLDs) on goggles. The Hp(0.07) personal dose equivalent was measured over aprons with whole-body OSLDs. Data on patient dose as recorded by the kerma-area product (PKA) were collected using an automatic dose management system. The 2 paediatric cardiologists working in the facility were involved in the study, and 222 interventions in a 1-year period were evaluated. The ceiling-suspended screen was often disregarded during interventions.ResultsThe annual eye lens doses estimated on goggles were 4.13 ± 0.93 and 4.98 ± 1.28 mSv. Over the aprons, the doses obtained were 10.83 ± 0.99 and 11.97 ± 1.44 mSv. The correlation between the goggles and the apron dose was R2 = 0.89, with a ratio of 0.38. The correlation with the patient dose was R2 = 0.40, with a ratio of 1.79 μSv Gy−1 cm−2. The dose per procedure obtained over the aprons was 102 ± 16 μSv, and on goggles 40 ± 9 μSv. The eye lens dose normalized to PKA was 2.21 ± 0.58 μSv Gy−1 cm−2.ConclusionsMeasurements of personal dose equivalent over the paediatric cardiologist’s apron are useful to estimate eye lens dose levels if no radiation protection devices are typically used.  相似文献

This work was aimed at optimizing biomass production by the edible basidiomycete Pleurotus ostreatus ATHUM 4438 in a submerged process with enhanced glucan and dietary fibres content. β-Glucan from Pleurotus sp. (pleuran) has been used as food supplements due to its immunosuppressive activity. Like other dietary fibre components, oyster mushroom polysaccharides can stimulate the growth of colon microorganisms (probiotics), i.e. act as prebiotics. We used the FF MicroPlate for substrate utilization and growth monitoring. The pattern of substrate catabolism forms a substrate assimilation fingerprint which is useful in selecting media components for media optimization of maximum biomass production. Different carbon sources (95) were used and then 8 of them were tested in shake flask cultures. The effect of various organic and complex nitrogen sources on biomass production was also examined and response surface methodology based on central composite design was applied to explore the optimal medium composition. When the optimized culture medium was tested in a 20-L stirred tank bioreactor, using 57 g L−1 xylose and 37 g L−1 corn steep liquor, high yields (39.2 g L−1) of dry biomass was obtained. The yield coefficients for total glucan and dietary fibres on mycelial biomass formed were 140 ± 4 and 625 ± 9 mg g−1 mycelium dry weight, respectively.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the applicability of dendrochronology for assessing the growth dynamics and response to climate variability and to estimate the aboveground carbon stock and carbon sequestration potential of Vitellaria paradoxa in southern Mali. Twenty stem disks were collected from three land-use types (parklands, fallows and protected areas) in Koutiala and Yanfolila districts. We combined a standard dendrochronological approach with biomass allometric equations to estimate the growth and carbon stocks. The results showed that V. paradoxa forms distinct growth ring boundaries but most of the disks from parklands did not successfully cross-date due to management operations like pruning. The tree-ring width showed a significant standardized coefficient of regression with rainfall (r2 = 0.66, p < 0.001) but insignificant correlation with temperature. One-way analysis of variance showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) for C-sequestration as well as for carbon stocks in aboveground biomass for both land-use types and sites. Mean values of the amount of C-sequestered in Yanfolila were 0.112 ± 0.0.065 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 in parklands, 0.075 ± 0.018 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 in fallows and 0.064 ± 0.028 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 in protected areas. In Koutiala, the values were 0.068±0.020 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 in the parklands and 0.053 ± 0.017 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 in the fallows. These results clearly indicate that dendrochronology can be applied to assess growth and carbon sequestration potential of V. paradoxa. These results also suggest that climate change could affect the growth and carbon sequestration potential of V. paradoxa. Given the limited size of our sample, figures on the amount of carbon are indicative calling for applying the tested approaches to larger samples and also to other tree species in West Africa.  相似文献

Sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) foraging behavior and prey preference were studied from June to August 2001–2004 in Simpson Bay, Prince William Sound, Alaska. The study area has an average water depth of 30 m and a benthos primarily of soft- and mixed-sediment with no canopy-forming kelps. A total of 1816 foraging dives from 211 bouts were recorded. Overall, dives ranged in depth from <5 to 82 m; most dives were less than 15 m (40%) with smaller, secondary peaks at 25–30 m (10%) and 50–55 m (7%). Average dive depth and duration were 27 m ± 19.5 and 1.89 min ± 0.88, respectively. Dive durations were all significantly different: male > unknown > female. Dive depths reflected the bathymetry (percentage of the bay within a depth range) of Simpson Bay but favored shallow areas. 87% of foraging dives were successful, and 44% of the prey was positively identified: 75% clams, 9% Pacific blue mussels, 6% crabs, 2% Reddish scallops and a variety of other invertebrates. There was no evidence for prey specialization among the sexes. Although sea otters in Simpson Bay rely heavily on bivalves, their diet has remained unchanged for the past 18 years, and the minimum summer population has been constant for at least the past nine years. It appears that bivalves are the predominant and stable component of the diet, and their productivity is sufficient to sustain a stable population of sea otters with a minimum peak summer density of 4.3 adult otters km?2 and an average annual density of ca. 2.9 adult otters km?2 for the past nine years and probably longer.  相似文献
