The mating behaviour of a quasi‐gregarious egg parasitoid Telenomus triptus Nixon (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae), which exploits egg masses of a stink bug Piezodorus hybneri (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), is examined in the laboratory. In this parasitoid wasp, male adults that emerge earlier stay at the natal egg mass and mate with subsequently emerging females. In the present study, a male adult that encounters the emergence of another male always waits for it to egress, and then mounts the newly emerging male. To examine why males of T. triptus show same‐sex sexual behaviour, male adults are presented with a parasitized host egg mass or a freshly killed wasp. Male adults are observed to remain at host egg masses from which only male wasp(s) had emerged. In addition, male adults attempt to copulate with freshly killed young male wasps. It is suggested that newly emerging male wasps are targets of same‐sex sexual behaviour because they possess cues for male sexual behaviour similar to the cues of females. Both the sex and age of freshly killed wasps affect the frequency of the sexual behaviour of male adults: females are more attractive than males, although their attractiveness declines with age. When the mating opportunity is restricted to the natal egg mass, the costs of failing to notice newly emerging female adults should be extremely high. Habitat and resource distributions can influence the movement and aggregation of individuals and thus have important effects on breeding behavior and ecology. Though amphibians have been model systems for the study of breeding behavior and sexual selection, most studies have examined breeding behavior within a single pond. As a result, little is known about how inter-pond distance affects breeding amphibians. We studied the effects of inter-pond distance on the breeding ecology of the tungara frog, Physalaemus pustulosus, in replicated pond arrays in which distance was varied from 0 to 50 m. We predicted that male site fidelity and male aggregation within arrays would increase with inter-pond distance, and that the opportunity for mate choice and oviposition site selectivity by females would decrease with the distance between ponds. Male site fidelity did increase with inter-pond distance. However, male aggregation decreased with distance, such that males tended to be more evenly spaced among ponds when ponds were farther apart. The opportunity for mate choice by females, measured as the number of males within the phonotactic radius of females, also decreased with inter-pond distance. Each of these three responses was consistent with a threshold effect between 5 m and 10 m in inter-pond distance. This threshold corresponded to the maximum distance at which females in laboratory choice experiments exhibited phonotaxis toward the ”whine” call of a tungara male, suggesting that phonotactic limits may play an important role in tungara movements and spacing patterns. The distribution of egg masses among ponds, a potential correlate of oviposition site selectivity, did not vary with inter-pond distance. Multiple egg masses deposited on the same night were significantly overdispersed in all distance treatments, implying that females may select oviposition sites to avoid conspecific egg masses over distances of at least 50 m. Collectively, these results demonstrate that inter-pond distance may indeed affect amphibian breeding and movement behavior, and that consideration of multiple habitat patches and their spatial distributions can provide new insights into even the most well-understood mating systems. Courtship behaviour in spiders in the form of premating vibrations by males may function (1) as a male identity signal used for species recognition, (2) in suppression of female aggressiveness, (3) to stimulate female mating behaviour, or (4) as a quality signal used in female choice. We investigated the function of web vibration by male Stegodyphus lineatus in a series of experiments. Regardless of vibratory performance, all males mated successfully with virgin females but only 56.4% of males mated with nonvirgin females. Vibratory performance did not influence male mating success, but heavier males had a higher probability of mating with mated females. Males vibrated less often and produced fewer vibrations when introduced on the web of a mated female. Males that vibrated webs of virgin females mated faster than nonvibrating males, but there was no effect of vibration rate or body mass. There was no effect of male vibratory effort or vibration rate on female reproductive success measured as time to egg laying, clutch size, number of hatched young, number of dispersed young and offspring body mass after a single mating. Males vibrated on abandoned virgin female webs but the response decreased with increasing duration of female absence, suggesting that females produce a web-borne pheromone, which elicits male vibrating behaviour. Mated females were less receptive and not stimulated by male vibrating behaviour. We conclude that male premating vibrations in S. lineatus do not function as a male quality signal selected via female choice. Rather, the primary function of this behaviour may be to stimulate a receptive female to mate. In male odonates, both size and fat content are related to territory defence and mating success. Males that are larger and have higher energy reserves win relatively more disputes for territory and attract more females. Wing colour has also been regarded as a mechanism that influences agonistic behaviour between males, as wing pigmentation might be regarded as a sign of male quality. In this study, we analysed whether a set of male physical (body size and wing colour), physiological (body fat content) and behavioural (disputes between males) characteristics were involved in the territory defence and mating behaviour of the neotropical dragonfly Zenithoptera lanei Santos, 1941 (Anisoptera: Libellulidae). Males were characterised as territorial whenever they warded‐off other males and remained in the same place within the pond for two consecutive days. In general, these territorial males were larger and had more abdominal and thoracic fat, engaged in pursuits more frequently, spent more time on sexual behaviour and female guarding, and mated more in comparison to subordinate males. By evaluating whether the percentage of wing area covered by black ink influenced male behaviour, we found that territorial males tended to act aggressively towards other males whose wings were partially painted, and sexually towards females irrespective of wing area painted. In Z. lanei, both body size and fat content play a role in defining territoriality. By subduing competitors and dominating preferred locations within high‐quality sites, these males are likely to be visited by females and engage in mating.  相似文献

Synopsis In both Malacoctenus hubbsi and Malacoctenus macropus, males defended preferred oviposition sites from both other males and potential egg predators. In M. hubbsi, adult females were larger than adult males. Larger M. hubbsi males were not associated with territory parameters that were correlated with higher mating success, and male size was not correlated with mating success. Male size did affect mating success when territory parameters were statistically controlled for, but the failure of large males to associate with better territories eliminated any mating advantage for larger males. In M. macropus, males are larger than females. Larger males defended preferred oviposition sites, and had higher mating success than did smaller males. Male M. macropus also had much higher site fidelity than male M. hubbsi. These results suggest that the evolution of the differences in site fidelity and sexual size dimorphism between these two species may be due to sexual selection acting differentially in these two species.  相似文献

Abstract. The effect of temperature on male sexual displays is well documented but its role in mediating the differential mating success of males is less well established. Male sagebrush crickets Cyphoderris strepitans Morris and Gwynne occur in high‐elevation sagebrush meadows in mountainous areas of the western U.S.A., and often are observed singing at temperatures as low ?8 to ?4 °C to attract sexually receptive females. Males exhibit differential mating success based on their previous mating experience: virgin males have a higher probability of obtaining a mating than do non‐virgin males of securing an additional mating. This differential mating success is mediated in part by an unusual form of nuptial feeding behaviour. Females feed on males’ hind wings at mating and the costs imposed on males as a consequence of this behaviour constrain male mating success. In the present study, to determine whether sagebrush crickets are capable of some degree of thermoregulation, and also to investigate whether this ability is influenced by male mating experience, thoracic temperatures of males of varying mating status were measured in relation to ambient temperature throughout the breeding season. A full factorial model examining the effect of site of capture, mating status, body mass and ambient temperature reveals that only ambient temperature has a significant effect on thoracic temperature after controlling for all other factors. It is concluded that differences in the calling times of virgin and non‐virgin males and their ability to secure mates does not result from differences in their ability to cope physiologically with low temperatures.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Mature crayfish, collected from an Irish lake before breeding had started, were held in breeding combinations and their mating and brooding activities observed.
2. All mating attempts were initiated by the male. A single mating led to spawning within 6 days but a subsequent mating cancelled the effects of the first. Males mated more often when there were more females present. Males lacking a major cheliped mated less often than did normal males.
3. Larger males mated more often than did smaller males, and although males showed no female size preference, matings were less frequent and generally unsuccessful when males were much larger than females; the female was usually killed. Large females mated successfully with smaller males.
4. Females held at high densities with a larger male mated earlier than at low densities. However, aggression also increased with density; at high densities males fought and killed females.
5. Males held in pairs without females fought; in occasional mating attempts spermatophores were not positioned correctly. Paired females rarely fought; all spawned normally although unmated. Although their eggs soon died and were removed during grooming, brooding behaviour continued for at least 2 months.
6. Brooding females held in pairs shed pleopodal eggs during aggressive encounters. Females held singly showed a lower initial rate of egg loss.  相似文献

Males of the Japanese goby Rhinogobius sp. OR (orange type) establish nests under stones in streams. They provide care to egg masses until hatching. We carried out field observations and a field experiment in a natural stream to examine the effect of male body size on brooding success. An experiment excluding guarding males indicated that their presence has a positive effect on nest defense. Field data showed that male body size was positively correlated with the size of the egg mass that was initially found at the nest. Furthermore, a sequential increase in egg mass size seen in the nests of larger males indicated that multiple females spawned during a single breeding cycle of larger males. To examine male brooding success, two dependent variables, egg mass persistence (days from initial egg mass to disappearance or hatching) and hatching success were analyzed. The results indicated that the variation found in both dependent variables was significantly explained by two independent variables, namely, initial egg-mass size and the number of matings. It is also suggested that male body size indirectly influenced brooding success through positive correlations with these independent variables.  相似文献

Among a variety of fish mating systems, promiscuity with random-mating seems to be most prevalent. However, detailed studies of promiscuity have been rare due partly to the peculiar difficulty in examination of male mating and reproductive success in the random mating. Females of the armoured catfish Corydoras aeneus (no sexual dimorphism other than size of males > females) spawn 10–20 egg-clutches with multiple males at a time, but an entire egg clutch is inseminated by sperm of a single male. We studied mating system of this fish in aquarium. Males had neither mating territories nor monopolized females, never being aggressive against rival males. Evidence of female preference for certain male traits including size was not detected. Females mated a male in proportion to his relative courtship frequency among males. Courtship frequency was not related to male size, and male mating success was not different between small and large males. Clutch size and insemination rate were different neither between small and large males nor between frequently and less frequently courting males. Thus, the male reproductive success will not be related to the male size, but directly to courtship frequency, indicating the random mating in this fish. There seemed to be fecundity advantage with size in female, and the consequent sexual difference in energy allocation will be responsible to the sexual dimorphism. We also discuss the low male-GSI in this promiscuous fish in which sperm competition hardly occurred.  相似文献

The social organization of the sexually dimorphic and dichromatic Crescent Honeyeater Phylidonyris pyrrhoptera (Latham 1801) was studied at Wilsons Promontory National Park between January 1994 and January 1997. All breeding attempts at one site were followed during the spring and summer of 1996. Most pairs were multibrooded, with pair-bonds maintained throughout the study. Breeding males held well-defined territories. Females, although generally restricting their activities to within their mate’s territory, visited other males’ territories more frequently than did their mates and did so close to the time of egg laying. Males aggressively chased intruding males, but appeared to permit intrusions by non-mate females. Circumstantial evidence suggests some males may kill neighbour’s nestlings. Female Crescent Honeyeaters are solely responsible for nest construction and incubation. While both sexes attended nestlings, males contributed to parental care significantly less than females. Males also provided significantly less parental care than has been reported for monomorphic species of honeyeater. Single syllable calls are given throughout the year. Peaks in the rate of double and multisyllable calls corresponded with peaks in breeding activity. Only males were observed uttering loud multisyllable calls. In contrast to predictions arising from sexual selection theory and observations of the mating system of sexually dimorphic hummingbirds, the population of Crescent Honeyeaters studied exhibited a socially monogamous mating system. However, the very limited male role in parental care and non-observance of male territory boundaries by females suggest the genetic mating system may not be one of monogamy.  相似文献

Males of the non-territorial damselfly Enallagma hageni have two alternative tactics for finding mates: (1) they search the banks of the pond for unmated females (searching tactic), or (2) wait at oviposition sites for females that resurface prematurely from underwater oviposition (waiting tactic). Although the searching tactic yielded more fertilizations than the waiting tactic, for time invested, the waiting tactic became increasingly successful later in the reproductive season due to changes in female oviposition behaviour. The two tactics can be maintained in the population because males can mate by the waiting tactic during the afternoon when few females are available to searchers. Among males visiting the breeding site an equal number of times, males mating by a mixture of tactics were as successful as males mating only by the main tactic. Because marked males were found to use both tactics, these behaviours are interpreted as evidence of behavioural plasticity within individuals, representing one conditional evolutionary strategy.  相似文献

Males ofTrichogramma sp., a gregarious parasitoid which attacks eggs of the yellow-legged tussock mothIvela auripes (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), are polymorphic for wings. In mating within host eggs, no difference in mating success was observed between winged (large) males and wingless (small) males, whereas in mating outside eggs, the former were superior to the latter. Some wingless males were observed to perform sneaking copulation on egg masses. In the 1-male brood, which is thought to be founded by 1 mother wasp, the male size tended to decrease as the number of females per brood increased. But in the 2-male brood, which is assumed to be added with 1 more smaller male produced by the second mother wasp in double parasitism, the larger male did not reduce his size, compared with the male of the 1-male brood with an equal number of females. This phenomenon can be explained reasonably by a version of the kin-selection theory: When there is only 1 male in a host egg, he transfers resources in the egg to his sister females, but, when another male appears, he decides to act to the females less altruistically.  相似文献

Birds move between breeding locations to gain a better territory, avoid competition or reduce the deleterious effect of inbreeding. We investigated breeding site fidelity in a small European passerine, the penduline tit (Remiz pendulinus). This species has an exceptionally diverse breeding system, in which both males and females may have up to 5–7 mates in a single breeding season, and the eggs are incubated by a single parent: either the male or the female. We investigated the movements of males and females within three breeding seasons in Southern Hungary (2002–2004). Males moved for shorter distances between breeding sites (116 m, 63–333 m; median, lower quartile–upper quartile) than females (942 m, 415–2,382 m). Movements of males and females were consistent between years, and they were repeatable between subsequent nests of males, but not of females. Taken together, our results suggest that adult male penduline tits are more site-faithful than adult females. We suggest that this difference has an implication on their breeding ecology since male parental behaviour (desert/care) is expected to be influenced by local mating opportunities, whilst female parental behaviour is likely to depend on the mating opportunities in a large area around their breeding site.  相似文献

The effect of dominance on the mating behaviour of both females and males was investigated for the communally breeding pukeko (Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus). Pukeko are polygynandrous with most groups consisting of three to 7 breeding males and one or two breeding females that lay eggs in a single nest. Linear dominance hierarchies are well established within breeding groups. Alpha females were involved in more copulations than beta females, but this difference did not appear to be a result of dominance status. There was also no evidence of egg tossing or egg destruction by breeding females. There was no positive correspondence between dominance rank of males and their frequency of sexual activity or copulations during the prelaying or laying periods. Dominants did interrupt matings by subordinates, but both qualitative and quantitative analyses of behaviour found no evidence of mate guarding. Furthermore dominants were no more likely to interrupt a copulation involving a subordinate male than they were to passively observe it or not react at all. This led us to suggest that males tended to behave indifferently toward mating competitors. As a result, multiple paternity is predicted to be high in pukeko groups. We also question the standard interpretation that males are behaving cooperatively in communal groups rather than coactively.  相似文献

Lifetime mating success of male azure damselflies (Coenagrion puella) was measured in a natural population. The major determinant of mating success is the number of days a male spends at the breeding site, which is mostly determined by a male's adult lifespan. Long-lived males have a higher mating rate than short-lived males, and daily mating rate increases with age up to 6 days, then falls. Large males live longer, but have a lower daily mating rate than small males. These effects of size are very weak, accounting for no more than 2% of the daily variance in mating success. The only overall effect of size on lifetime mating success is that males at both extremes of the size distribution are more likely to fail to mate. Chance differences in the number of females encountered are sufficient to account for the remaining variance in mating success. The weather is also shown to have a major effect on mating success. We draw attention to the ways in which it may be misleading to draw conclusions about the action of sexual selection from studies of daily, rather than lifetime, reproductive success. We provide evidence to support the view that variance in male reproductive success is neither evidence for sexual selection, nor a measure of its intensity.  相似文献

Studies of avian species have shown that maternal effects mediated by the transfer of egg hormones can profoundly affect offspring phenotype and fitness. We previously demonstrated that the injection of a physiological amount of testosterone (T) in the eggs of ring‐necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) disrupted the covariation among male morphological traits at sexual maturity and positively affected male mating success. Here, we investigate whether egg T exposure affected adult male circulating T levels at the onset of the breeding season (reflecting gonadal maturation), and the relationship between circulating T and male traits. Egg T exposure did not affect pre‐mating plasma T. T levels were not associated with the expression of secondary sexual and non‐sexual traits or socio‐sexual behaviour (social rank, overall fighting ability and mating success). However, wattle brightness decreased with increasing circulating T in males hatched from T‐eggs (T‐males) but not among control males. In dyadic encounters during the peak mating period, control males with higher pre‐mating T levels had higher chances of being dominant over other control males. However, higher pre‐mating T levels did not predict success in male‐male competition in encounters involving T‐males. We suggest that the long‐term effects of egg T on male phenotype do not originate from differential gonadal maturation according to egg T treatment. Rather, prenatal androgens may have priming effects on functioning of target tissues, translating into differential phenotypic effects according to androgen exposure during embryonic development.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of prior sexual experience and of female receptivity on the probability that male guppies will court females with high or low intensity displays or attempt rape. There were no differences in behaviour between males with a history of high copulation success and those with low copulation success. Males with receptive females exhibited higher levels of high intensity displays and fewer rape attempts than males with unreceptive females, regardless of prior experience. The results are discussed in terms of sexual selection and the selective advantage of behavioural plasticity in which different sexual behaviour patterns are chosen with respect to the probability of a successful mating at a given time.  相似文献

  1. Females of many species select mates based on important morphological and performance traits. This behaviour likely facilitates reproductive success thus exhibiting sexual selection. Most such studies have evaluated a single morphological variable, and only a minority of them studies the effects of behaviour and performance (functional capacity: Irschick et al., Evolutionary Ecology Research, 10 , 177–196, 2008) at all.
  2. This study compares male morphological and performance traits differing in three variables that may correlate with fitness: condition index, flight ascent speed and resistance to torpor in relation to male mating success in the parasitoid wasp species Alabagrus texanus (Braconidae), a species where males swarm about emerging virgin females that display both choosy and non-choosy behavioural phenotypes.
  3. Males that successfully mated with choosy females exhibited higher condition indices and somewhat stronger resistance to torpor than other males. Conversely, males that mated with non-choosy females did not differ in any trait from other males we measured. Early-arriving males did not have higher condition indices or greater mating success than other males.
  4. Thus, both morphological and performance traits contributed to male success, which acted through female choice, indicating a role for sexual selection. Patterns of choice further differed among females, independent of male traits.

The breeding behaviour of a Common toad ( Bufo bufo ) population was studied at a breeding pond on Portland, Dorset. Major toad movements towards the breeding pond occurred on warm, wet nights when the temperature did not fall below 6°C. Males arrived earlier than females resulting in an initially exaggerated sex ratio which then slowly reduced as the breeding season progressed. No size assortative pairing was found although large males were more successful at mating than small males. Although males demonstrated no ESS (evolutionary stable strategy) in searching for a female between sites within the pond evidence suggesting the existence of one between the pond and an undefined area surrounding it was found.  相似文献

Extremely divergent traits between males and females are often the result of different requirements and behaviours of the sexes and will evolve relatively rapidly under selection forces. Sexual dimorphism in Rhopalapion longirostre is predominately manifested in the length and structure of the rostrum. To estimate how sexual selection shapes mating success in this weevil we compared paired and unpaired individuals collected from three populations in Austria. The mating process in this species is complex and lengthy. Statistical analyses based on detailed observations of their mating behaviour revealed that matched pairs show functional affinities in body size. Females and males with larger elytra, as well as males with large overall body size, are favoured mating partners, while males that are too small have no mating success. This arrangement ensures copulation and consequently successful egg deposition. For efficient egg channel boring into the flower buds of the host plant, Alcea rosea, the extremely long female rostrum is a crucial tool. Natural selection promotes longer rostra in females whereas sexual selection favours the shorter rostra in males.
