A study on the forest association and phenology of wild coffee ( Coffea canephora Pierre) was conducted in Kibale forest, Uganda. Nested quadrats were used to enumerate tree species, including coffee and herbaceous plants associated with forest and coffee stands. A total of 150 coffee trees was marked along transects and monthly scans carried out to score for fruits, flowers, leaves and leaf insect damage. Pre- and post-dispersal predation levels and coffee yield estimates were made by examining fruits from trees, forest floor and seasonal fruit falls into demarcated plots. In the forest, wild coffee stands are associated with low-quality forest types in terms of timber species (about 10.5 canopy species/study site) and low stocking densities of trees ≥ 50 cm d.b.h. (average 38 trees ha−1 for each site) and poor forest regeneration. In the forest, wild coffee reproductive phases overlap with ripening, coinciding with flower bud and flower production. The variable peak ripening season falls between November and April. The wild coffee yields are generally low (average of 3.5 intact fruits 16 m−2 month−1), with low insect fruit/seed damage (4–19%) but high levels of wastage due to monkeys, bats and birds.  相似文献

Primary productivity of algal epiphytes on the surfaces of Phragmites, Potamogeton , and Nuphar was measured seasonally from June 1978, through June 1979, in the littoral zone of Lake Ohrid, using 14C methodology. Surface areas of individual macrophytes were determined throughout the study period through the use of a non-miscible surfactant and a calibration curve of surfactant weight versus known, calculated surface areas.
Mean total surface area available for epiphytic colonization during the study period was 1.032 m2 macrophyte surface per m2 of littoral zone for Phragmites , 0.810 m2 for Potamogeton , and 0.167 m2 for Nuphar . Seasonal rates of mean primary productivity of algal epiphytes on Phragmites from the surface to the light-compensation depth ranged from 84–1406 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1; ranges for epiphytes on Potamogeton and Nuphar were 77–586 and 69–268 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1, respectively. Maximum rates were observed typically during June; minimum rates were observed typically during August to December. Mean daily productivity rates over the 12 month period were for epiphytes on Potamogeton 167.0, on Nuphar 100.4 and on Phragmites 671.2 mg C m−2 littoral zone d−1. Calculated annual production for epiphytes on Nuphar was 36.65, on Potamogeton 60.95 and on Phragmites 245.0 g C m−2 littoral zone yr−1. Epiphytic production data were typically considerably higher than production data obtained for littoral and pelagial planktonic algae and compare favorably with published data for epiphytic and periphytic production in Lawrence Lake, Marion Lake, and Borax Lake.  相似文献

Sun bear ( Helarctos malayanus ) frugivory and fruiting phenology was investigated in a lowland dipterocarp forest in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Two mast fruiting events, both coinciding with El Niño/Southern Oscillation events, occurred 4 years apart, resulting in large fluctuations in fruit availability. Sun bear fruit availability decreased from 13 trees ha−1 fruiting month−1 during the mast fruiting to 1.6 trees ha−1 fruiting month−1 during the intermast period. Almost 100% of sun bear diet consisted of fruit during mast fruiting period, whereas sun bear diet was predominantly insectivorous during intermast periods. The majority of sun bear fruit trees displayed 'mast-fruiting' and 'supra-annual' fruiting patterns, indicating sporadic productivity. Sun bears fed on 115 fruit species covering 54 genera and 30 families, with Ficus (Moraceae) being the main fallback fruit. The families Moraceae, Burseraceae, and Myrtaceae contributed more than 50% to the sun bear fruit diet. Sun bear fruit feeding observations were unevenly distributed over forest types with more observations in high-dry forest type despite fewer fruiting events, possibly due to a side-effect of high insect abundance that causes bears to use these areas more intensively. The possible evolutionary pathways of sun bears in relation to the Sundaic environment are discussed.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 489–508.  相似文献

Summary Germinable seed stores of 5- and 8-year-old rehabilitated bauxite mine pits in south-west Western Australia were assessed before and after burning. These seed stores were compared to those of adjacent unmined Jarrah ( Eucalyptus marginata ) forest, to identify at what age fire can be reintroduced, in order to measure restoration success and reduce fire hazard. Soils were sampled in early summer (before fire) and late autumn (after fire). Before fire, the mean topsoil seed bank of 5-year-old sites was 2121 seeds per m2 while 8-year-old sites had a mean of 1520 seeds per m2. Only the 5-year-old sites were significantly different from the forest mean of 1478 seeds per m2 for the same season. After summer burns (and possibly due to seasonal effects) topsoil seed banks of rehabilitated areas (sampled in autumn) decreased by an average of 53 per cent. Topsoil seed banks of 5–8-year-old sites were resistant to lower intensity burns, with 362 seeds per m2 of native species surviving mild burns and 108 seeds per m2 of native species surviving after an intense summer fire. The topsoil seed reserve of 5–8-year-old rehabilitated areas had a high proportion of annual weed species while the forest sites had high levels of subshrubs and native annuals. Low-intensity burns did not alter the composition of life-forms in the soil seed bank, while intense burns favoured annual weed and shrub species. The results indicate that it is not appropriate to introduce fire to rehabilitated areas before 8 years, due to limited fuel reduction benefits and possible adverse effects on obligate seeding species. The large proportion of weed species in the soil seed bank of young rehabilitated areas is a concern, and remains a major consideration for future disturbance of these areas.  相似文献

We studied consumption of wild fruits by redwings Turdus thacus coburnt at two sites on the southwest coast of Iceland, just prior to the autumn migration During this period the principal study site offers c 800000 fruits ha−1 most of these are of Empetrum nigrum (c 90% of fresh weight), but fruits of Vaccimum uliginosum. Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Vaccimum myrtillus and Rubus saxatilis are also present Redwings regularly consumed the fruits of all these species except R saxatilis At both study sites E nigrum fruits were the most important component of the redwing diet (70 - 80% of fruits ingested), followed by V uliginosum (c 20%) Neither species was consumed as predicted on the basis either of overall relative abundance of fruits or of relative frequency of occurrence of fruiting plants in two hundred 0 3 m2 plots In another forty 0 3 m2 plots, the number of E nigrum fruits consumed over a seven-day penod was not significantly correlated with the number of fruits initially present Empetrum nigrum seed width is positively correlated with fruit size, and the mean width of seeds in droppings suggests that redwings prefer large E nigrum fruits (which have a higher pulp-to-seed weight ratio) to small E nigrum fruits Despite the predominance of E nigrum, redwing droppings tend to contain a mix of seeds of different species, the most frequent combination being E nigrum and V uliginosum  相似文献

Changes in species composition, stem abundance, and basal area of trees taller than or equal to 10 m in a medium altitude tropical rain forest at the Ngogo study area, Kibale National Park, Uganda are described for the period between 1975 and 1998 ( n  = 23 years). Two enumeration episodes were conducted in 263 plots of 5 m by 50 m during 1975–80 and 1997–98. During this period, species richness decreased by 3% (from 92 to 89). Species diversity (H') also declined slightly from 2.97 to 2.86. The number of trees recorded in the sample plots decreased by 8% (from 2545 to 2329), while basal area decreased from 49.48 m2 ha−1 to 48.68 m2 ha−1. However, stem abundance and basal area increased for some species.  相似文献

An investigation covering hydrography, chemistry, vascular and cryptogamic plants, nitrogen fixation, phytoplankton biomass and production, and zooplankton was carried out from April to November 1976 in tarn in W Norway, The volume of the tarn was 18000 m3 and the turnover time about 30 d. Temperature ranged between 3.6 and 23.4°C and pH between 4.8 and 5.5. Nuphar luteum and Carex rostrata were the two dominating vasculars-with biomasses of 117 and 97 g m−2, respectively The biomass of the bryophytes ( Sphagnum spp.) was about 510 g m−2 and the production of the order 0.2–2.1 μg (mg d.w.)−1h−1. Nitrogen fixation in association with Sphagnum spp. was estimated at 25 g yr−1 for the whole tarn. Phytoplankton was dominated by diatoms, green algae and chrysophyceans. The chlorophyll a content ranged from 2 to 20 mg m−3 and the carbon assimilation rates from 0.03 to 20 mg C m−3h−1 at 0–4 m depths. Production in the period was of the magnitude 22 g C m−2. The copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis was the most common netzooplankter. Large numbers of rotationrians were found during summer.  相似文献

Two 1 ha plots of undisturbed upper montane rain forest in southern Ecuador were sampled for all trees with a dbh ≥ 5 cm. An extraordinarily high α-diversity for a forest near treeline is described. The "non-ridge forest" plot at 2900 m elevation has 75 species and 28 families ha-1 and is believed to represent an advanced stage of succession whereas, the "ridge forest" plot at 2700 m elevation with 90 species and 38 families ha-1 has a more rapid turn-over rate probably due to a more unstable environment. Downslope forces (soil creep) are discussed as a possible cause for 32–44% of all trees being inclined more than 30° in the moderately steep terrain (average slope 20° in both study plots). The plot of "non-ridge forest" is characterized by a much greater biomass whether expressed as basal area (44 m2 versus 15 m2) or stem volume (214 m3 versus 52 m3), while the density is equally high (2310 versus 2090 trees ha-1) in both plots. Families with Family Importance Value >25 / ha-1 are Clusiaceae, Cunoniaceae, Melastomataceae, Myrsinaceae, and Ternstroemiaceae.  相似文献

The photosynthetic contribution of a fruit to its carbon requirement throughout ontogeny and under different growing conditions was quantified in cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L. cv. Corona). In addition, the effects of shading on fruit dry matter accumulation and the diurnal course of the elongation rate were studied. Fruit darkening had no photomorphogenic effect on fruit growth, while the cumulative photosynthetic contribution of a fruit to its own carbon requirement ranged from 1 to 5%. During the day there was always a net CO2 efflux. The photosynthetic rate per fruit, calculated as the difference between rates of CO2 exchange in light and dark, increased during fruit ontogeny, while the photosynthetic rate per unit fruit surface area declined. The latter was not dependent on fruit size. The photosynthetic activity per unit surface area of fruits was estimated to be about 20–30% as efficient as that of leaves. The rate of calculated photosynthesis was reduced by 60–65% when the photosynthetically active radiation incident on the fruit decreased from 200 to 50 μmol m−2 s−1. Temperature (20–30°C) had no pronounced effect on the rate of calculated fruit photosynthesis when fruits of the same developmental stage (temperature sum) were compared. However, the relative photosynthetic contribution of a fruit to its carbon requirement increased when temperature decreased. Moreover, this contribution increased when irradiance increased or fruit growth was reduced by competing fruits. During fruit ontogeny the daily photosynthetic contribution was highest (up to 15%) in young and old fruits, with a small growth rate.  相似文献

The dispersion of salmon and trout of 0 +, 1 + and 2 + age classes was examined by electrofishing 12 sections of a stream in Perthshire, Scotland at the end of the growing season in September to October in 1972 and 1976. In 1972 sections ranged in surface area from 21 to 122 m2 and had volumes of 5.0–17.3 m3 and when surveyed in 1976 surface areas were 15–106 m2 and volumes 2.1–6.7 m3. In 1976 widths and areas of sections were 63–87% of the values for 1972, depths were 39–68% and volumes 28–52% of the earlier values. These differences were due to 1976 being drier and warmer. In both years, all sections contained 0 + and 1 + age classes of salmon and trout and some sections contained 2 + age salmon and trout. The total density of fish in a section ranged from 1.9 to 3.9 m−2 in 1972 and from 3.72 to 6.08 m−2 in 1976. There was an inverse relationship, significant in 1972 only, between the density of 0 + salmon and that of 1 + trout in the different sections. Densities of both 0 + and 1 + salmon in the sections were inversely correlated, and those of 0 + and 1 + trout were directly correlated, with area of water deeper than 10 cm.  相似文献

Grazing by oligochaetes and snails on epiphytes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
SUMMARY. 1. The isotope 33P was used to assess the effect of grazitig by oligochaetes (mainly Stylaria lacttstris L.) and the snail, Lymnaea peregra (Muller), on epiphytes within an Equisetum fluviatile L. stand.
2. Two 1 m2 polystyrene enclosures were set up within the emergent macrophyte zone of the lake. At the start of the experiment 33P-solution was mixed with the water in both tanks. Algal and animal samples for 33P- analysis were collected during the peak occurrence of epiphytes in June.
3. Phosphorus release rates from the animals through defaecation and excretion were measured in the laboratory. The grazing rate of oligochaetes was 2.2–4.1 mg P m−2 (of bottom) d−1 of which about two - thirds was released and recycled. The oligochaete density ranged from 13,400 to 20,900 m−2. The snails (25 ind. m−2) grazed 1.2-1.5 mg P m−2d−1of whieh about a quarter was released through defaecation and excretion.
4. Daily consumption by the oligochaetes and snails corresponded to 22–45% of the average phosphorus uptake by the epiphytes.  相似文献

Yolk-sac pike fry were stocked at densities of 0.74 – 81.4 m−2 in two ponds, each divided into eight sectors (mean area 155.8 m2). Growth and survival were recorded from May to December 1985. The growth rates were variable within each sector. The size-range of sampled fish increased throughout the year, but showed no significant correlation with density. Fry survival was initially density-independent but switched by late June/July to density-dependence, ranging from 0.5 to 43.6% of initial stocking numbers. The highest mean daily mortality rates occurred during May-July. The final survival in December ranged between sectors from 0.059 to 11.25% of the starting stock densities. The final biomass per unit area of pike surviving in December was not related to initial stocking density. In Pond 1 the mean biomass produced was 2.21 gm−2 and in Pond 2 was 3.49gm−2.
Pike fry < 30 mm fed only on invertebrates; those 30–100 mm took a wide range of invertebrates, cyprinids. sticklebacks and other pike. Cannibalism occurred at most densities between 5.45 and 81.4 fish m−2.
Where attempts are made to increase pike production in managed populations by releasing small fry, an upper stock density of 5 fry m−2 is advised if large, density-dependent mortalities are to be avoided.  相似文献

Power-law relationships have been estimated between fecundity and fish length, weight and age for pike from two gravel pit lakes (Main Lake and St Peter's Lake) in Buckinghamshire, England. Relative fecundity, estimated at 17.6 eggs g−1 for Main Lake pike and 19.4 g−1 for St Peter's Lake pike, did not differ significantly between the lakes. Population fecundity for the Main Lake was estimated at 10.6 million eggs and 6.4 million eggs in 1986 and 1987, respectively.
Experimental work involving samples of eggs from 18 artificially fertilized Main Lake female pike showed a significant relationship between egg diameter and female length, and a significant difference between mean egg diameters for 41-cm and 101-cm females. No significant relationships were found between mean egg size and mean fry size, nor between fry length and adult length. Mean size differences between newly hatched, 18-day-old and 41-day-old fry from the 41-cm and 101-cm females were not significant.
Samples of eggs taken at 2-day intervals from 6 April to 5 May in a pike spawning area of the Main Lake revealed clumped distributions of eggs, with average egg densities ranging from 1 to 47 eggs per 0.071 m2 (14–671 m 2) on sand and silt substrata. The maximum egg density of 51 per 0.071 m2 (729 m−2) was found on flooded grass. The stages of development of the eggs were identified over the sampling period. Survival from stage 1 to fry was estimated at 3–6%. Egg losses were estimated at 9–10% day−1.
Egg survival experiments gave overall hatching success rates of 11 % on sand/silt compared with 2.5% on aquatic plants (1986), and 18.9% on undisturbed sand/silt compared with 7.9% on disturbed sand/silt (1987). The effect of siltation on egg hatching is discussed.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Two predictive models were employed along with intensive field sampling to estimate production of black flies ( Simulium spp.) on snags (submerged wood) in three blackwater streams on the Georgia Coastal Plain of the southeastern U.S.A. One model predicts daily growth rate from temperature and hydrograph pattern; the other predicts habitat abundance (of snags) from river height.
2. In the sixth order Ogeechee River, annual production was twice as high in 1982 (7.1 g dry mass [=DM] m−2 of snag surface) as in 1983 (3.6 g DM m−2). When converted to production per m2 of river bottom, values were 35–40% of the snag surface estimates. Annual production was much lower in fourth order Black Creek (1982, 1.3 g DM m−2 of snag surface) and much higher in the sixth order Satilla River (1975, 15.6–40.0 g DM m−2).
3. There was a distinct bimodal pattern of black fly production in the Ogeechee River in both years, with peaks occurring in winter and summer. Similar bimodal patterns of production were found in Black Creek and in the Satilla River. Although there appears to be an intrinsic component to the bimodal pattern, production peaks (growth rate and biomass) appear to be associated with initial stages of flooding.
4. Annual production/biomass ratios (37–85) are the highest reported for black fly populations. The variation of annual P/B ratios among sites was more strongly dependent on the temporal distribution of standing stock biomass than on differences in growth rates. Variation in production among sites appears to be due to differences in current velocity, hydro-graph variability, and abundance of coexisting consumers.  相似文献

Abstract. Germination responses of redroot pigweed ( Amaranthus retroflexus L.) seeds to ethylene were determined at 25, 30, 35, or 40° C after preincubation at various temperatures (15–35° C) for different periods (0.5–32 d). After 7 d preincubation, seeds showed a log-linear germination response to ethylene concentration in most of the temperature treatments. Sensitivity to ethylene increased with longer preincubation; response thresholds of 0.03−0.09 cm3 m−3 were observed after 32 d, compared to 0.18−1.6 cm3 m−3 after 7 d of preincubation. Preincubation at 15 or 20° C generally enhanced germinability, whereas 25 or 30° C produced secondary dormancy, which was readily broken with ethylene. Temperature during preincubation also significantly influenced the slope of the dose-response curve. The responses of preincubated redroot pigweed seeds to ethylene suggested that, in the field, seeds would probably not lose their sensitivity to this gas during prolonged burial in soil.  相似文献

The forest on the strictly protected island Vorsø in Horsens Fjord has since 1952 been examined every ten years to discover the number, basal area, wood volume and aboveground biomass of the species. This paper describes the results from 1982 and the development up to that. The dominating species are Fraxinus excelsior, Ulmus glabra and Fagus sylvatica. The two forests, "Vesterskov" (6.09 ha) and "Østerskov" (2.48 ha) respectively, were, in 1982, still immature. Their number of stems per ha were: 756 and 509; basal area: 38 m2 and 45 m2. volume: 544 m3 and 615 m3; biomass 207 t and 268 t. The annual increase 1972–1982 was respectively 8.8 m3/ha and 0.3 m3/ha. The impact of the cormorant ( Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis ) is especially in "Østerskov" increasing, since the colony here was established in 1976. The succession of the forest is discussed in relation to the disturbance by the cormorants.  相似文献

A population of Rumex obtusifolius L. seeds imbibed for 24 h at 25°C exhibits a sigmoid logarithmic fluence-response relationship for stimulation of germination by red light (R), 11.0 μmol m−2 being necessary for 50% of the response. After 24 h imbibition at 35°C the fluence-response relationship for stimulation of germination by R is biphasic. For 50% response the very sensitive phase (very low fluence-response) requires 4.7 − 10−2μmol m−2 whereas the less sensitive phase (low fluence-response) requires 4.0 μmol m2. A few seconds of far-red light (FR) satisfies the germination requirement of the sensitive seeds after 24 h at 35°C. However, a longer period of FR (2 h) results in low germination. The fluence-response relationship for induction of these seeds by R is sigmoid, 4.8 μmol m−2 being necessary for 50% response, demonstrating that 2 h FR desensitizes the sensitive proportion of the seed population induced by 24 h at 35°C. A proportion of the seed population can be further sensitized by 60 min at 35°C following this desensitization.  相似文献

The effect of fruit removal on gas exchange, water relations, chlorophyll and non-structural carbohydrate content of leaves from mature, field-grown plum trees ( Prunus domestica L. cv. Stanley) was determined over 2 consecutive growing seasons. Removal of fruits during stage II of fruit development decreased CO2 assimilation rate within 24 h from 12.6 to 8.5 μmol m-2 s-1 in 1986, and from 12.1 to 10.2 μmol m-2 s-1 in 1987. Depression of net photosynthesis persisted for at least 5 days and was greatest in the early afternoon. Recovery of the CO2 assimilation rate to pretreatment levels coincided in defruited trees with vegetative growth that was more than 5-fold that of fruiting trees in the first 6 weeks after fruit removal in 1986. Estimated photorespiration was similar in both fruiting and defruited trees. The stomatal contribution to the decrease of CO2 assimilation rate, calculated from assimilation/intercellular CO2 curves, ranged from 31 to 46%. Defruiting did not affect leaf water potential, but decreased leaf osmotic potential. Leaf levels of chlorophyll, fructose, glucose, sorbitol and sucrose were not affected by defruiting, whereas starch content increased up to 51% in leaves of defruited trees within 24 h after fruit removal. However, because of the small starch pool present in plum leaves (<1.9% dry weight) it is unlikely that starch accumulation was responsible for the observed decline in CO2 assimilation rate after fruit removal. The decrease of CO2 assimilation rate is discussed in relation to the hypothesis of assimilate demand regulating photosynthesis through a feedback mechanism.  相似文献

Backcalculated lengths at the end of the first growth season in wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar differed significantly between parr smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 years over a period of 11 years (i.e. 1983–1993). Mean body lengths of the respective age groups at the end of the first growth period were 11·1, 6·2 and 4·7 cm, respectively. The mean percentage distribution of fish smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 was 14, 78 and 7%, and the mean smolt age was 1·95 years. Mean lengths at smolting of age groups 1, 2 and 3 were 13·6, 15·8 and 17·5 cm, respectively. Females outnumbered males among the downstream migrating smolts with a mean sex ratio (females/ males) estimated at 1·61, with a significant female surplus in 7 of the 11 years sampled. Of the smolts sampled, 14% exhibited enlarged gonads indicative of parr maturation, and all were males (37% of the parr males sampled). Mean annual smolt density from 1975 to 1996 was 13·4 individuals 100 m−2 ranging between 0·3–31 smolts 100 m−2. Mean densities (100 m−2) of the smolts aged 1, 2 and 3 years were 1·5, 9·3 and 0·9 fish, respectively. Mean annual biomass for the 22-year period (1975–1996) was estimated at 437 g 100 m−2, with a range of variation from 136 to 683 g 100 m−2. Smolt age 2 made up 81% of the mean annual biomass (355 g 100 m−2) and smolt age 1 and 3, 8% (35 g 100 m−2) and 11% (47 g 100 m−2), respectively.  相似文献

The effect of fruiting on carbon fixation and retention in leaves was monitored by measuring net photosynthesis (Pn) and total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) on a seasonal basis on mature fruiting and non-fruiting sweet cherry trees ( Prunus avium L. cv. Bing). Pn was also measured diurnally during stages II and III of fruit development. Pn rates increased to between 18 and 20 mg CO2 dm-2 h-1 during stage II of fruit development and were maintained until harvest. Diurnally, Pn increased in the morning to 20 mg CO2 dm-2 h-1 and this rate continued until sunset. Leaf carbohydrate levels decreased in both fruiting and non-fruiting trees beginning at the equivalent of stage II of fruit growth. Carbohydrates were lower in leaves and woody portions of current, 1- and 2-year-old shoots of fruiting trees. Although differences were found in levels of non-structural carbohydrates, no differences in Pn were found in fruiting vs non-fruiting plants on either a seasonal or a diurnal basis. Pn rates in swet cherry in the field were primarily affected by ontogeny and environment and not by sink strength.  相似文献
