Plant growth, biomass allocation and autofragmentation were investigated in response to root and shoot competition in the submersed macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum L. growing in two sediment environments. Biomass accumulation and allocation were significantly affected by sediment fertility, with a higher total biomass observed in fertile sediment (average: 4.69 g per plant vs. 1.12 g per plant in infertile sediment). Root-to-shoot ratios were 0.34 and 0.06 in the infertile and fertile sediments, respectively, reflecting the high investment placed on roots under infertile conditions. In the presence of root, shoot, and full competition, whole plant biomass decreased by 18%, 12% and 24% in the infertile sediments, and 23%, 25% and 33% in the fertile sediments, respectively. Root weight ratios (RWRs) increased with root competition by 38% (P < 0.001) and 12% (P = 0.002), while leaf weight ratios (LWRs) decreased with shoot competition by 6% (P = 0.042) and 5% (P = 0.001) in the infertile and fertile sediments, respectively. A total of 406 autofragments were harvested in the fertile sediments, but none were obtained from the infertile sediments. In the control, autofragment number and biomass was 166% and 175% higher compared to the competition treatment. Root and shoot competition resulted in a 21% (P = 0.043) and 18% (P = 0.098) decrease in the autofragment biomass, respectively. These results indicated that M. spicatum responds to different sediment fertility by changing its allocation patterns. Moreover, both root and shoot competition influenced plant growth and autofragmentation, while sediment nutrient availability played an important role in M. spicatum autofragmentation.  相似文献

In this study we examine the influence of non-monsoon sediment arrival on the high-diversity SE Indian seagrass meadows of the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. We used a gradient-based approach to examine the influence of increasing sediment loads on species composition and shoot density. In addition, for the ubiquitous seagrass (Cymodocea serrulata), we tested the influence of sediment on its biomass and productivity. We identified three sites in Palk Bay and four sites in Gulf of Mannar (SE India) along a gradient of sediment input. At each of the seven locations, sediment traps were deployed to measure sedimentation rates. Nine seagrass cores were taken systematically along 50 m transects at a constant sub-tidal depth to measure shoot density and biomass. A few shoots of C. serrulata were marked to estimate the above ground seagrass growth rate. Our results indicate that sedimentation rates that ranged from 8.6 to 62.4 mg DW cm−2 d−1 could not explain species composition of the meadow or shoot density of the observed species. C. serrulata was, by far, the most abundant species and present in all sediment conditions. Sedimentation rates did not alter shoot elongation rates in C. serrulata, ranging from 1.54 ± 0.29 SD to 0.25 ± 0.02 SD cm d−1, but in contrast, increased vertical rhizome elongation rate. This increase was reflected in an increase in below ground biomass along the sediment gradient (R2 = 0.582, p = 0.01). C. serrulata appears to be able to adapt to the sediment dynamics in this area by allocating resources to rhizomes and roots to counteract burial and stabilizing sediments. Given that siltation is one of the most important threats to seagrass meadows, understanding the species-specific adaptive mechanisms of seagrass species in these high-sediment, high diversity South Asian meadows is an important first step in ensuring their long-term survival and functioning.  相似文献

Decline of submersed macrophytes has occurred in eutrophic lakes worldwide. Little is known about effects of nutrient enrichment on biomechanical properties of submersed macrophytes. In a 30-day experiment, Myriophyllum spicatum was cultured in aquaria containing two types of sediment (mesotrophic clay vs. fertile loam) with contrasting water NH4 + concentrations (0 vs. 3.0 mg L?1 NH4–N). The plant growth, shoot and root morphology, stem biomechanical properties, and stem total nonstructure carbohydrates content (TNC) were examined. The NH4 +-enriched water, particularly combined with the fertile sediment, caused adverse effects on M. spicatum as indicated by reductions in the growth, stem biomechanical properties (tensile force, bending force and structural stiffness), and TNC content. These results indicate that increased sediment fertility and water NH4 +-enrichment made the plant more fragile and vulnerable to hydraulic damage, particularly for the upper stem, implying that M. spicatum was prone to uprooting and fracture by hydraulic force, and the broken fragment from parent shoot of M. spicatum might have low-survival potential due to its low-TNC content. This may be a mechanical aspect for the decline of submersed macrophytes and makes it more difficult to restore submersed vegetation in the eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

Thirty-six programs have been set up to revegetate the degraded lake wetlands in east China since 2002. Most projects however faced deficiency of submerged macrophyte propagules. To solve the problem, alternative seedling sources must be found besides traditional field collection. This paper deals with an in vitro propagation protocol for two popularly used submerged macrophytes, Myriophyllum spicatum L. and Potamogeton crispus L. Full strength Murashige and Skoog-based liquid media (MS) plus 3% sucrose in addition to 0–2.0 mg l−1 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and 0–1.0 mg l−1 indoleacetic acid (IAA) were tried for shoot regeneration. Meanwhile, full, half or quarter strength MS in addition to 0, 0.1 or 0.2 mg l−1 naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) were tested for root induction, respectively. Results indicated that both species had the ability of regeneration from stem fragments in MS without further regulators. However, the addition of 2.0 mg l−1 BA with 0.2 or 1.0 mg l−1 IAA in MS drastically stimulated the regeneration efficiency of M. spicatum, while the addition of 2.0 mg l−1 BA with 0.2 or 0.5 mg l−1 IAA in MS significantly stimulated that of P. crispus. For root induction, full strength MS in combination with 0.1or 0.2 mg l−1 NAA was preferred by M. spicatum, and the same MS without or with 0.1 mg l−1 NAA was preferred by P. crispus. Seedlings of each species produced from tissue culture room had a 100% survival rate on clay, sandy loam or their mixture (1:1) in an artificial pond, and phenotypic plasticity was exhibited when the nutrient levels varied among the three types of sediments. This acclimation of seedlings helped develop the shoot and root systems, which ensured seedling quality and facilitated the transplantation. Our study has established an effective protocol to produce high quality seedlings for lake revegetation programs at a larger scale. Since the two species we tested represent different regeneration performances in nature but shared similar in vitro propagation conditions, this study has indicated a potentially wide use of the common media for preparing seedlings of other submerged macrophytes.  相似文献

The relationship between male infertility and AZFc micro-deletions that remove multiple genes of the Y chromosome varies among countries and populations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence and the characteristics of different Deleted in azoospermia (DAZ) gene copy deletions and their association with spermatogenic failure and male infertility in Tunisian men. 241 infertile men (30.7% azoospermic (n = 74), 31.5% oligozoospermic (n = 76) and 37.7% normozoospermic (n = 91)) and 115 fertile healthy males who fathered at least one child were included in the study. Three DAZ-specific single nucleotide variant loci and six bi-allelic DAZ-SNVs (I–VI) were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–restriction fragment length polymorphism and PCR. Our findings showed high frequencies of infertile men (73.85%) and controls (78.26%) having only three DAZ gene copies (DAZ1/DAZ2/DAZ3 or DAZ1/DAZ3/DAZ4 variants); so deletion of DAZ2 or DAZ4 were frequent both in infertile (36.5% and 37.3%, respectively) and fertile groups (33.9% and 44.3%, respectively) and removing DAZ4 copy was significantly more frequent in oligospermic than in normospermic men (p = 0.04) in infertile group. We also report for the first time that simultaneous deletion of both DAZ2 and DAZ4 copies was significantly more common in infertile men (12.4%) than in fertile men (4.3%) (p = 0.01). However, deletions of DAZ1/DAZ2 and DAZ3/DAZ4 clusters were very rare. Analysis of DAZ gene copies in Tunisian population, suggested that the simultaneous deletion of DAZ2 and DAZ4 gene copies is associated with male infertility, and that oligospermia seems to be promoted by removing DAZ4 copy.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 on the biomass, photosynthesis, protein and phenolic concentrations and content of Plantago maritima and Armeria maritima. This enabled us to test the protein competition model (PCM) for predicting C allocation to phenolics. Three contrasting responses to elevated CO2 (600 μmol CO2 mol−1) between the two study species were observed. (1) In P. maritima, plant biomass increased and the maximum carboxylation rate of Rubisco (Vc,max) was decreased. However, in A. maritima, shoot biomass decreased and the Vc,max of Rubisco was unchanged. (2) The total phenolic content increased in P. maritima but decreased in A. maritima. (3) Protein concentrations and content decreased in P. maritima and root protein concentrations and content increased in A. maritima. We conclude that C and N allocation to phenolics and proteins is species- and organ-specific and the PCM predictions were correct when phenolics and proteins were expressed on a per plant content basis.  相似文献

Tolerance and remedial function of submersed macrophyte Vallisneria spiralis to phenanthrene in freshwater sediments were investigated by manipulating initial phenanthrene concentrations in sediments from 8 to 80 mg kg−1 dry sediment. The biomass growth of V. spiralis on phenanthrene-spiked sediments was not adversely affected until initial phenanthrene concentrations in sediments increased to 80 mg kg−1 dry sediment. V. spiralis might evolve adaptive mechanisms to toxic contaminants in sediment, and then could change the growth patterns in order to decrease the toxicity on its growth. The removal efficiencies of phenanthrene from the planted sediments were 18% higher than those from the sediments without plant even under an initial phenanthrene concentration of 80 mg kg−1 dry sediments. The enhanced removal of phenanthrene in sediments by the plant might be achieved mainly by the synergism between plant roots and microbes in the rhizosphere.  相似文献

Plant growth, biomass allocation, root distribution and plant nutrient content were investigated in the submerged macrophyte Potamogeton crispus growing in heterogeneous sediments. Three experimental sediments heterogeneous in nutrient content and phosphorus release capacity were used: sandy loam with low nutrient content (A), clay with intermediate nutrient content (B), and clay with high nutrient content (C). Biomass accumulation was significantly affected by the sediment type, and was highest in clay C (1.23 mg per plant dry weight) but lowest in sandy loam (0.69 mg per plant dry weight). The root:shoot ratios in treatments A, B and C were 0.30, 0.14 and 0.09, respectively. P. crispus allocated more biomass to roots in sandy loam compared with the other sediments. The average root numbers in sediments A, B and C were 16, 19 and 20, respectively, and the total root lengths in sediments A, B and C were 238.84, 200.36 and 187.21 cm, respectively. Almost 90% of the root biomass was distributed in the 0–15 cm depth in sediments B and C, compared with 64.53% in sediment A. The rank order of plant nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the sediment types was C > B > A. These results indicate that both sediment structure and nutrient availability influence the growth and distribution of the root system of P. crispus.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, water level and burial depth on seed germination of two submerged species, Myriophyllum spicatum and Potamogeton malaianus, were investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. There was no significant difference in final germination of M. spicatum among water level treatments, but P. malaianus germinations at 1 cm and 12 cm water levels were better than at 0 cm water level at temperatures of 20 °C and 30 °C. Little to no germination was observed for either species at the temperature of 10 °C. At 15 °C, however, germination increased significantly to 66.3-70.6% for M. spicatum and to 29.4-48.1% for P. malaianus under all three water level treatments. Increased temperature from 15 °C to 30 °C had no significant effect on the final germination of M. spicatum except at the 1 cm water level, but enhanced significantly the germination of P. malaianus. Analysis of the mean time to germination revealed that M. spicatum was a faster germinator relative to P. malaianus. The two species’ germination differed markedly in response to burial depth. Germination percentage of M. spicatum was 71.3% at 0 cm burial depth, but decreased to 5.0% and to 2.5% at depths of 1 cm and 2 cm, respectively; whereas germination percentages of P. malaianus were 40.0%, 23.8%, 12.5%, 7.5% and 1.3% at depths of 0 cm, 1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm and 5 cm, respectively. We concluded that the two species respond differently to germination strategies. The findings provided further insight into how germination strategy contributes to the seed bank formation and species invasion.  相似文献

The uptake kinetics of phosphate (Pi) by Myriophyllum spicatum was determined from adsorption and absorption under light and dark conditions. Pi uptake was light dependent and showed saturation following the Michaelis-Menten relation (in light: V = 16.91 × [Pi](1.335 + [Pi]), R2 = 0.90, p < 0.001; in the dark: V = 5.13 × [Pi](0.351 + [Pi]), R2 = 0.77, p < 0.001). Around 77% of the loss of Pi in the water column was absorbed into the tissue of M. spicatum, and only 23% was adsorbed on the surface of the plant shoots. Our study shows that M. spicatum shoots have a much higher affinity (in light: 3.9 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1; in the dark: 3.7 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1) and Vmax (maximum uptake rate, shoot light) for Pi uptake than many other aquatic macrophytes (in light: 0.002-0.23 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1; in the dark: 0.002-0.19 μmol g−1 dw h−1 μM−1), which may provide a competitive advantage over other macrophytes across a wide range of Pi concentrations.  相似文献

Folate pathway is expected to play an important role in spermatogenesis since it is involved in DNA synthesis, repair and methylation. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between male infertility and the MTHFR (C677T and A1298C) and MTRR (A66G) polymorphisms. A group of 300 males was recruited in this study from different Jordanian infertility clinics. Of these, 150 cases of infertile men that included oligozoospermia cases (n = 45), severe oligozoospermia (n = 71) and azoospermia (n = 34) were studied. The other 150 males were age matched fertile controls. Genotyping of MTHFR and MTRR polymorphisms was performed using PCR-RFLP technique. The results showed an association between MTHFR 677TT genotype and male infertility (P < 0.05). However, the distribution of MTHFR A1298C and MTRR A66G genotypes were not different between the fertile and infertile groups (P > 0.05). In addition, none of the examined polymorphisms was related to any of the semen parameters in the infertile group. In conclusion, this study showed that MTHFR C677T polymorphism is associated with male infertility in Jordanians.  相似文献

Current knowledge about the abundance, growth, and primary production of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson is biased towards shallow (depth <3 m) meadows although this species also forms extensive meadows at larger depths along the coastlines. The biomass and primary production of a C. nodosa meadow located at a depth of 8–11 m was estimated at the time of maximum annual vegetative development (summer) using reconstruction techniques, and compared with those available from shallow meadows of this species. A depth-referenced data base of values at the time of maximum annual development was compiled to that end. The vegetative development of C. nodosa at 8–11 m depth was not different from that achieved by shallow (depth <3 m) meadows of this species. Only shoot density, which decreased from 1637 to 605 shoots m−2, and the annual rate of elongation of the horizontal rhizome, which increased from 23 to 71 cm apex−1 year−1, were different as depth increased from <3 to 8–11 m. Depth was a poor predictor of the vegetative development and primary production of C. nodosa. The biomass of rhizomes and roots decreased with depth (g DW m−2 = 480 (±53, S.E.) − 32 (±15, S.E.) depth (in m); R2 = 0.12, F = 4.65, d.f. = 35, P = 0.0381) which made total biomass of the meadow to show a trend of decrease with depth but the variance of biomass data explained by depth was low. The annual rate of elongation of the horizontal rhizome showed a significant positive relationship with depth (cm apex−1 year−1 = 18 (±5.1, S.E.) + 5.0 (±1.33, S.E.) depth (in m); R2 = 0.50, F = 14.07, d.f. = 14, P = 0.0021). As shoot size and growth did not change significantly with depth, the reduction of shoot density should drive any changes of biomass and productivity of C. nodosa as depth increases. The processes by which this reduction of C. nodosa abundance with depth occur remain to be elucidated.  相似文献

Nomenclature: follows Flora Europea (Tutin et al. 1964–1980). Since the extension of the irrigation system, the water regime of most of the permanent marshes of the Camargue (southern France) have been intensively controlled. Considerable quantities of nutrient rich Rhone water are pumped into these marshes, leading to lower salinities and a higher biomass production and consequently an increasing organic matter concentration of the sediments. Myriophyllum spicatum has become abundant in these permanent marshes since large quantities of freshwater entered these systems. It has displaced Potamogeton pectinatus in several of these marshes. The different factors likely to influence the distribution of P. pectinatus and M. spicatum were investigated experimentally. The impact of Cl- concentrations between 0 and 6 g l-1 on the biomass production of both species was tested. P. pectinatus appears to be more salt tolerant than M. spicatum. The influence of sediment quality on the biomass production of both species was investigated using six sediments differing in organic matter concentration. Compared to P. pectinatus, M. spicatum had a lower total biomass production when grown on sediments with low organic matter concentration (2–4% organic matter) and a higher biomass production on sediments with relatively high organic matter concentration (9–13% organic matter).Nitrogen addition to the sediments yielded an increased biomass production of P. pectinatus and M. spicatum. On some sediments M. spicatum needed higher concentrations of nitrogen than P. pectinatus to increase its biomass production. The creation of freshwater marshes by the introduction of irrigation water, resulting in lower salinities and an increase in sediment organic matter concentration, stimulates the biomass production of M. spicatum. As M. spicatum grows less well on poor sediments and at higher salinities it seems to be unable to displace P. pectinatus in more natural systems in the Camargue.  相似文献

We developed an equation for estimating Arundo donax shoot dry weight from shoot length. The equation, shoot dry weight (g) = 14.254 (standard error = ±0.275) × shoot height2 (m), was as effective at explaining a high proportion of total variation in shoot dry weight (R2 = 0.90) as more complicated equations containing additional morphometric parameters. Tested against two independent datasets, the equation provided accurate estimates of dry weight for shoots ranging from 0.3 to 7.06 m height (dataset 1, P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.87, N = 29; dataset 2, P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.82, N = 192). The equation provides aboveground biomass estimates from stem counts and heights more rapidly than harvest methods.  相似文献

Geospatial and field data were merged to characterize the invasion of an exotic macrophyte into a large (∼6192 ha), reservoir, the Chippewa Flowage, Wisconsin, USA. Multi-scale analyses provided data for quantitative models of human, abiotic and biotic influences that would explain the presence and abundance of Myriophyllum spicatum L., a widespread, aquatic species. Human and abiotic factors were analysed in a geographic information system and additional abiotic and biotic factors were sampled at 2778 sample points. Using multivariate logistic and multiple linear regressions the relationships between 29 factors and the species’ presence and abundance were quantified. M. spicatum occurred at 181 of 992 vegetated points. M. spicatum abundance was significantly influenced by two geospatial variables (wave action and water-level drawdown) and two site variables (water depth and native species presence). Separate models for shallow and deep water explained 32% and 30% of M. spicatum abundance, respectively (compared to 22.8% using all 181 points). The species’ vertical distribution (range = 0.30-4.27 m) was related to depth of winter drawdown (∼1.3 m on average) and to water depth (an indicator of decreasing light), as well as to shading by floating-leaved macrophytes. Spatial extrapolation of model predictions for M. spicatum presence indicated that a total 940 hectares are at risk for M. spicatum invasion (∼15% of the Chippewa Flowage; about 2.5 times larger than the current distribution).  相似文献

Myriophyllum spicatum and Potamogeton crispus are common species of shallow eutrophic lakes in north-eastern Germany, where a slow recovery of the submersed aquatic vegetation was observed. Thus, the characterisation of the root oxygen release (ROL) as well as its implication for geochemical processes in the sediment are of particular interest. A combination of microelectrode measurements, methylene blue agar and a titanium(III) redox buffer was used to investigate the influence of the oxygen content in the water column on ROL, diel ROL dynamics as well as the impact of sediment milieu. Oxygen gradients around the roots revealed a maximum oxygen diffusion zone of up to 250 μm. During a sequence with a light/dark cycle as well as alternating aeration of the water column, maximum ROL with up to 35% oxygen saturation at the root surface occurred under light/O2-saturated conditions. A decrease to about 30% was observed under dark/O2-saturated conditions, no ROL was detected at dark/O2-depleted conditions and only a weak ROL with 5–10% oxygen saturation at the root surface was measured under light but O2-depleted water column. These results indicate, that during darkness, ROL is supplied by oxygen from the water column and even during illumination and active photosynthesis production, ROL is modified by the oxygen content in the water column. Visualisation of ROL patterns revealed an enhanced ROL for plants which were grown in sulfidic littoral sediment in comparison to plants grown in pure quartz sand. For both plant species grown in sulfidic littoral sediment, a ROL rate of 3–4 μmol O2 h−1 plant−1 was determined with the Ti(III) redox buffer. For plants grown in pure quartz sand, the ROL rate decreased to 1–2 μmol O2 h−1 plant−1. Hence, aside from the oxygen content in the water column, the redox conditions and microbial oxygen demand in the sediment has to be considered as a further major determinant of ROL.  相似文献

The relationship between male infertility and microdeletions in the Y chromosome that remove multiple genes varies among countries and populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the different types of Chromodomain protein, Y-linked 1 (CDY1) gene deletions and their effect on male infertility and spermatogenesis in Tunisian men. A total of 241 infertile men with different spermatogenic impairments and 115 fertile men were included in this study. We determined the prevalence of CDY1a and CDY1b copy deletions by PCR-RFLP using PvuII as restriction endonuclease. Results: Among the 356 Tunisian individuals, 93.25% had the two copies (CDY1a and CDY1b) of CDY gene (91.2% in infertile patients and 97.3% in fertile men). We also found that deletion of CDY1b was significantly more frequent in infertile patients (azoo/oligospermic and normospermic) than in fertile men (7% vs 1.7% respectively; p value = 0.02). However, deletion of CDY1a copy was very rare, and was detected in only one fertile man and four normospermic infertile patients. Our findings showed that deletion of CDY1b copy gene is a significant risk factor for male infertility independent of sperm concentration, whereas deletion of CDY1a gene seems to have no effect on fertility in the Tunisian population.  相似文献

The potential of near infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with partial least squares regression to predict Miscanthus xgiganteus and short rotation coppice willow quality indices was examined. Moisture, calorific value, ash and carbon content were predicted with a root mean square error of cross validation of 0.90% (R2 = 0.99), 0.13 MJ/kg (R2 = 0.99), 0.42% (R2 = 0.58), and 0.57% (R2 = 0.88), respectively. The moisture and calorific value prediction models had excellent accuracy while the carbon and ash models were fair and poor, respectively. The results indicate that near infrared spectroscopy has the potential to predict quality indices of dedicated energy crops, however the models must be further validated on a wider range of samples prior to implementation. The utilization of such models would assist in the optimal use of the feedstock based on its biomass properties.  相似文献

Both substrate type and plant–plant interaction can greatly influence the growth and establishment of plants. In order to assist the re-vegetation of submerged macrophytes, the growth of Hydrilla verticillata with increasing equi-distance neighboring plant density on two substrate types (sediment and sand, representing high- and low-nutrient level, respectively) was assessed in monoculture stands. The results showed that substrate type greatly changed the biomass allocation patterns of the target plants, with a smaller root mass ratio on sediment compared to sand (0.70 vs. 3.11%). However, interaction between substrate type and neighboring density was observed. At low density, growth on sediment greatly increased plant height (43.90 vs. 22.10 cm), leaf biomass (216.63 vs. 68.41 mg), and total biomass (298.39 vs. 121.77 mg) when compared to growth on sand. However, at high density, no significant effect of the substrate type was found in those parameters. On sediment, high neighboring density greatly decreased the height, root number, total root length, root mass, and total biomass, implying large intraspecific plant–plant competition. However, such competition can be greatly reduced in infertile environments. Therefore, when the plants were grown on sand, neighboring density showed little effect on the height (22.10–26.53 cm), total root length (21.34–40.50 cm), and root biomass (3.14–6.27 mg). Total biomass and root number significantly increased by 50% and 115%, respectively, at high density compared to low density on sand, suggesting that facilitation rather than competition was occurring. Therefore, plant–plant interaction can vary from competition in fertile environments to facilitation in infertile environments. In summary, neighboring density should be manipulated according to the environmental nutrient level, so as to reduce intraspecific competition or increase intraspecific facilitation, and finally enhance the initial growth and establishment of H. verticillata in re-vegetation activities.  相似文献

The present study employed simultaneously methods to investigate particle and solute transport and reaction rates in sandy sediments inhabited by two worms (2500 m− 2) with different feeding modes. Heteromastus filiformis is a head-down deposit-feeder and the main activities exerted by this worm are transport of particles as faecal pellets from subsurface to surface sediments and burrow ventilation. Marenzelleria viridis is a surface deposit-feeder that actively searches for food by burrowing near the sediment surface, producing a network of ventilated galleries in this zone. M. viridis exhibited 1.5 to 2.2 times higher particle mixing rates (Db = 3.3 to 4 × 10− 3 cm− 2 d− 1) compared to H. filiformis. In M. viridis treatments, continuous advection (eddy diffusion) was the major factor influencing solute transport resulting in apparent diffusion rates (Da = 2.2 cm− 2 d− 1), which were 3 times higher than molecular diffusion within the sediment. In H. filiformis inhabited sediments, the transport of solutes was discontinuous and driven by a surprisingly high nonlocal exchange (α = 1.1-1.3 d− 1), emphasizing its strong irrigation effects. Accordingly, the enhancement of solute fluxes was more pronounced for H. filiformis compared to M. viridis. Depth integrated TCO2 production derived from diagenetic modelling, which takes into account three reaction zones, is in good agreement with rates obtained from measured fluxes, indicating the applicability of both approaches to get reliable rates. However, the reaction rates showed that the presence of animals had a modest effect on microbial carbon oxidation. The results proved that transport conditions are deeply related to feeding modes. Exchange of solutes was the most important transport process by H. filiformis, while M. viridis affected both mixing and solute transport.  相似文献
