Abstract

Wounds on a juvenile tuatara discovered dead on Lady Alice Island, Chickens group, Hauraki Gulf, appear to have been inflicted by kiore. Flesh was stripped from the right abdominal wall of the tuatara exposing its ribs and liver, and part of its tail and eight digits were missing.  相似文献

Abstract

Observations on Stephens Island, Cook Strait, in December 1978 show that although the tuatara is generally most active at night, many animals spend much of the day at or beyond burrow entrances, apparently to increase their body temperature. During the day, tuataras tend to move further from burrows which are under shaded forest than from those in open pasture. By day, mean body temperatures (±SE) ranged from 17.2±0.5°C in forest shade to 24.6±1.1°C in full sunlight; the maximum body temperature recorded was 26.3°C. The significance of these observations is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract: Estimates of population size are necessary for effective management of threatened and endangered species, but accurate estimation is often difficult when species are cryptic. We evaluated effectiveness of mark–recapture techniques using the Lincoln–Peterson estimator for predicting true census size of a population of tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus), a burrowing reptile that is a conservation priority in New Zealand. We found that Lincoln–Peterson estimates ( = 85) were accurate for predicting the census size (N = 87) after only a 3-day mark–recapture survey. We recommend this method as a cost-effective way to accurately estimate population size for isolated, inaccessible tuatara populations, because it requires limited personnel, expertise, and time, and has low environmental impact on fragile sites.  相似文献

Abstract

Results from a survey of the tuatara populations on Hongiora and Ruamahua-iti Islands, conducted in March 1986, do not support an earlier report that the Hongiora population is declining (Crook 1973). On Hongiora, 49 captures were made of 43 tuatara over 12 man-hours, and on Ruamahua-iti, 67 captures of 60 tuatara were made over 12.5 man-hours. The mean body lengths of Hongiora tuatara (male=250.4 mm, female=220.8 mm) were significantly larger than those of Ruamahua-iti animals (male= 187.6mm, female= 179.3 mm). We question the interpretation that the smaller average size of tuatara on Ruamahua-iti Island indicates that they are younger than those on Hongiora Island.  相似文献

Anthropogenic habitat fragmentation — ubiquitous in modern ecosystems — has strong impacts on gene flow and genetic population structure. Reptiles may be particularly susceptible to the effects of fragmentation because of their extreme sensitivity to environmental conditions and limited dispersal. We investigate fine-scale spatial genetic structure, individual relatedness, and sex-biased dispersal in a large population of a long-lived reptile (tuatara, Sphenodon punctatus) on a recently fragmented island. We genotyped individuals from remnant forest, regenerating forest, and grassland pasture sites at seven microsatellite loci and found significant genetic structuring (RST = 0.012) across small distances (< 500 m). Isolation by distance was not evident, but rather, genetic distance was weakly correlated with habitat similarity. Only individuals in forest fragments were correctly assignable to their site of origin, and individual pairwise relatedness in one fragment was significantly higher than expected. We did not detect sex-biased dispersal, but natural dispersal patterns may be confounded by fragmentation. Assignment tests showed that reforestation appears to have provided refuges for tuatara from disturbed areas. Our results suggest that fine-scale genetic structuring is driven by recent habitat modification and compounded by the sedentary lifestyle of these long-lived reptiles. Extreme longevity, large population size, simple social structure and random dispersal are not strong enough to counteract the genetic structure caused by a sedentary lifestyle. We suspect that fine-scale spatial genetic structuring could occur in any sedentary species with limited dispersal, making them more susceptible to the effects of fragmentation.  相似文献

Abstract

Tree wetas (Hemideina crassicruris) were studied in kohekohe (Dysoxylum spectabile) forest on Stephens Island, Cook Strait, between 5 and 17 January 1978. Mark and recapture observations suggested a population density of at least 5300 wetas ha?1 and a biomass of 42 kg ha?1. Activity of wetas increased with temperature and humidity. Tuataras are important predators on Stephens Island and probably deter wetas from moving onto the forest floor. The enlarged head and jaws of male wetas are associated with head-on fights for occupancy of galleries. Single, adult males occupy galleries with a harem of up to 9 females. Stridulation was associated with agonistic encounters and was most frequent shortly before dawn. Seventeen percent of males and 42% of females were damaged. Moulting, copulation, and oviposition were observed, and females carried up to 96 mature eggs. Stephens Island tree wetas reach larger sizes overall, and males have relatively larger heads, than in other populations of the Cook Strait region. The number and size of galleries and the presence or absence of predators may be important determinants of weta population density, sex ratio, harem formation, and activity on the ground.  相似文献

Investigating the mating system of a population provides insight into the evolution of reproductive patterns, and can inform conservation management of threatened or endangered species. Combining behavioural and genetic data is necessary to fully understand the mating system and factors affecting male reproductive success, yet behavioural data are often difficult to collect for threatened species. In the present study, we use behavioural data and paternity analyses to characterize the mating system of a high density population of a long-lived, ancient reptile (tuatara, Sphenodon punctatus ). We further investigate the phenotypic traits (including body size, body condition, tail length, and ectoparasite load) that affect male reproductive success. Our behavioural data reflect a seasonally monogamous system with low levels of polyandry and polygyny that are consistent with male mate guarding. Male reproduction is highly skewed (only 25–30% of males are successful), and body size is the primary predictor of male reproductive success. Based on the genetic data, multiple paternity was found in only 8% of clutches, and the results of the paternity analyses showed monandrous clutches from socially polyandrous females. Our behavioural and genetic results revealed complexities in female mating patterns that support the potential for cryptic female choice or sperm competition. This warrants further experimental investigation into the mechanisms underlying reptile fertilization and the disparities between social and genetic polyandry in wild populations.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 161–170.  相似文献

Using treatments that mimic high and low availability of reproductive males, it was found that female three‐spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus, previously shown to adjust their mate choices when male mates were rare, did not alter their reproductive investment strategies. These results suggest that plasticity in investment is perhaps limited by physiological requirements or dependent on relatively extreme mate availability regimes. The probability of becoming reproductive, number of clutches per season (per female), initial clutch size and mass and the timing of reproduction were all independent of the experience a female had with mate availability. This suggests that pre‐copulatory plasticity in reproductive strategies may contribute more to variation in the strength and direction of sexual selection than reproductive investment in offspring.  相似文献

The effects of carcass size and male presence on clutch size in Nicrophorus quadripunctatus were examined. Male presence increased clutch size and improved the female's ability to produce replacement clutches. Clutch size was also related to carcass size. There was a negative correlation between number of clutches and clutch size for most carcass sizes. We conclude that N. quadripunctatus is potentially iteroparous and hypothesize that reproductive energy is reserved for brood failure.  相似文献

Clutch size of nine‐spined stickleback Pungitius pungitius from Airolo and Dog Bone Lakes, Alaska, showed small but significant differences between lakes and across 2 years. Life‐history traits in birds, such as lifespan, age at maturity, and rate of reproduction, vary across environments and in combinations imposed by trade‐offs and limitations of physiological mechanisms. A plethora of studies have described the diversity of traits and hypothesized selection pressures shaping components of the survival–reproduction trade‐off. Life‐history variation appears to fall along a slow–fast continuum, with slow pace characterized by higher investment in survival over reproduction and fast pace characterized by higher investment in reproduction over survival. The Pace‐of‐Life Syndrome (POLS) is a framework to describe the slow–fast axis of variation in life‐history traits and physiological traits. The POLS corresponds to latitudinal gradients, with tropical birds exhibiting a slow pace of life. We examined four possible ways that the traits of high‐elevation birds might correspond to the POLS continuum: (i) rapid pace, (ii) tropical slow pace, (iii) novel elevational pace, or (iv) constrained pace. Recent studies reveal that birds breeding at high elevations in temperate zones exhibit a combination of traits creating a unique elevational pace of life with a central trade‐off similar to a slow pace but physiological trade‐offs more similar to a fast pace. A paucity of studies prevents consideration of the possibility of a constrained pace of life. We propose extending the POLS framework to include trait variation of elevational clines to help to investigate complexity in global geographic patterns.  相似文献

Many colour morphs have been recognized in the Rhinogobius brunneus complex. A recent electrophoretic study has revealed that some of the colour morphs are well differentiated from each other genetically. In Okinawa, egg-size and life-history variation has been found in addition to the colour variation in this species complex. To clarify the nature of this life-history variation, gobies of a fluviatile morph with large eggs as well as three other amphidromous morphs with small eggs, inhabiting a single stream sympatrically in Okinawa, were analysed by electrophoresis and the females were also used for comparison of egg and clutch sizes. Electrophoretic data for 34 loci showed that each morph was separated by a fixed-allele difference for at least one locus, indicating that the four morphs which occurred sympatrically are reproductively isolated from each other. However, Nei's genetic distance between the fluviatile morph and one of the amphidromous morphs was much smaller (0.026) than distances among amphidromous gobies (0.323-0.480). Egg size of the former was by far the largest among the four. These results imply that speciation of the fluviatile morph accompanied by the egg-size increase has been completed rapidly without considerable genetic differentiation.  相似文献

The ecology of cavity nesting in passerine birds has been studied extensively, yet there are no phylogenetic comparative studies that quantify differences in life history traits between cavity‐ and open‐nesting birds within a passerine family. We test existing hypotheses regarding the evolutionary significance of cavity nesting in the Old World flycatchers (Muscicapidae). We used a multi‐locus phylogeny of 252 species to reconstruct the evolutionary history of cavity nesting and to quantify correlations between nest types and life history traits. Within a phylogenetic generalized linear model framework, we found that cavity‐nesting species are larger than open‐nesting species and that maximum clutch sizes are larger in cavity‐nesting lineages. In addition to differences in life history traits between nest types, species that breed at higher latitudes have larger average and maximum clutch sizes and begin to breed later in the year. Gains and losses of migratory behaviour have occurred far more often in cavity‐nesting lineages than in open‐nesting taxa, suggesting that cavity nesting may have played a crucial role in the evolution of migratory behaviour. These findings identify important macro‐evolutionary links between the evolution of cavity nesting, clutch size, interspecific competition and migratory behaviour in a large clade of Old World songbirds.  相似文献

The negative relationship between offspring number and offspring size provides a classic example of the role of trade-offs in life history theory. However, the evolutionary transitions in egg size and clutch size that have produced this negative relationship are still largely unknown. Since body size may affect both of these traits, it would be helpful to understand how evolutionary changes in body size may have facilitated or constrained shifts in clutch and egg size. By using comparative methods with a database of life histories and a phylogeny of 222 genera of cichlid fishes, we investigated the order of evolutionary transitions in these traits in relation to each other. We found that the ancestral large-bodied cichlids first increased egg size, followed by a decrease in both body size and clutch size resulting in the common current combination of a small-bodied cichlid with a small clutch of large eggs. Furthermore, lineages that deviated from the negative relationship between clutch and egg size underwent different transitions in these traits according to their body size (large bodied genera have moved towards the large clutch/small egg end of the continuum and small bodied genera towards the small clutch/large egg end of the continuum) to reach the negative relationship between clutch size and egg size. Our results show that body size is highly important in shaping the negative relationship between clutch size and egg size.  相似文献

Understanding phenotypic diversity requires not only identification of selective factors that favor origins of derived states, but also factors that favor retention of primitive states. Anurans (frogs and toads) exhibit a remarkable diversity of reproductive modes that is unique among terrestrial vertebrates. Here, we analyze the evolution of these modes, using comparative methods on a phylogeny and matched life‐history database of 720 species, including most families and modes. As expected, modes with terrestrial eggs and aquatic larvae often precede direct development (terrestrial egg, no tadpole stage), but surprisingly, direct development evolves directly from aquatic breeding nearly as often. Modes with primitive exotrophic larvae (feeding outside the egg) frequently give rise to direct developers, whereas those with nonfeeding larvae (endotrophic) do not. Similarly, modes with eggs and larvae placed in locations protected from aquatic predators evolve frequently but rarely give rise to direct developers. Thus, frogs frequently bypass many seemingly intermediate stages in the evolution of direct development. We also find significant associations between terrestrial reproduction and reduced clutch size, larger egg size, reduced adult size, parental care, and occurrence in wetter and warmer regions. These associations may help explain the widespread retention of aquatic eggs and larvae, and the overall diversity of anuran reproductive modes.  相似文献

The life cycle of the nine-spined stickleback Pungitius pungitius from Airolo Lake, Alaska, was studied using samples taken during 1993–1994 and 1997–1998. Pungitius pungitius was actively reproducing in late May and ceased reproductive activities by late June. Spawning adults were 2+ years old. Contrary to an earlier report, the data indicate that an individual female oviposits all of her ovulated eggs ( i.e. an entire clutch) into a male's nest during one spawning episode. There was a trade-off between clutch size and egg size without concomitant variation in clutch mass between two years. The results are compared to those from other studies.  相似文献
