Pot ale from a pilot-scale malt whisky distillery was treated using a mesophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) digester. Stable operation was observed at organic loading rates (OLRs) of 5.46 kg COD/m3 day or less when the pot ale was diluted with tap water. Digester failure occurred when undiluted pot ale was used, even though OLR was less than 5 kg COD/m3 day. Overall performance was worse than that observed previously when UASB digesters were used to treat pot ale from a different source supplemented with trace elements. A substantial proportion of effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) was present as volatile fatty acids (VFA), particularly during periods of reactor stress, indicating that overall performance was limited by the rate of VFA conversion. Wastewater alkalinity rose during digestion. The sludge which developed in the reactor was flocculent but did not form compact granules.  相似文献

Summary The effect of partial pre-acidification of carbohydrate containing wastewaters on anaerobic digester performance was investigated. The influent was a 1% (w/v) glucose solution in a mineral salts medium imposing carbon-limited growth conditions. Up to 13% of the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) was added as volatile fatty acids (VFA).In all cases, addition of VFA to the glucose medium resulted in significant increases in the maximum specific COD-conversion rates of the sludge (both with respect to continuous feeding and following a shock loading), as compared with values found on digestion of glucose media alone.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of waste activated sludge (WAS) has been regarded as the rate limiting step of anaerobic sludge digestion. Therefore, in this study, the effect of ultrasound and hydraulic residence time during sludge hydrolysis was investigated with the goal of enhancing methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD). WAS was ultrasonically disintegrated for hydrolysis, and it was semi-continuously fed to an anaerobic digesters at various hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The results of these experiments showed that the solids and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies when using ultrasonically disintegrated sludge were higher during AD than the control sludge. The longer the HRT, the higher the removal efficiencies of solids and COD, while methane production increased with lower HRT. Sludge with 30% hydrolysis produced 7 × more methane production than the control sludge. The highest methane yields were 0.350 m(3)/kg volatile solids (VS)(add) and 0.301 m(3)/kg COD(con) for 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge, respectively. In addition, we found that excess ultrasound irradiation may inhibit AD since the 50% hydrolyzed sludge produced lower methane yields than 16 and 30% hydrolyzed sludge.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of increasing p-nitrophenol (PNP) concentrations on the performance of anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) (chemical oxygen demand (COD), removals, volatile fatty acid (VFA), p-aminophenol (PAP) and methane gas productions) was investigated through 240 days. The PNP concentrations were raised to 700 from 10 mg/L corresponding to PNP loading rates of 0.97 and 67.9 g/m3 day. The PNP and COD removal efficiencies were 99 and 90% at PNP loading rates as high as 33.9 g/m3 day, respectively, through the acclimation of anaerobic granular sludge. After this loading rate, the removal efficiencies decreased to 79%. The COD removal efficiencies were high in compartment 1 (E = 78–93%) while a small amount of COD removal was achieved in compartments 2 and 3. The PNP removal efficiencies were approximately 90% in all PNP loading rates except for loading rate of 0.97 g/m3 day. The maximum PNP removal efficiency was measured as 99% at a loading rate of 8.32 g/m3 day. The optimum PNP loading rate for maximum COD, PNP removals and methane yield was 8.32 g/m3 day. The total, methane gas productions and methane percentages were approximately 2160–2400 mL/day and 950–1250 mL/day and 44–52% for the PNP loading rates varying between 4.36 and 33.9 g/m3 day, respectively. For PNP loading rates varying between 33.9 and 67.9 g/m3 day, the total, methane gas productions and methane percentages were approximately 2160 and 960 mL/day and 44%, respectively. The highest total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) concentrations were found in the first compartment with fluctuated values varied between 50 and 200 mg/L indicating the acidogenesis. p-Aminophenol was found as the main intermediate through anaerobic degradation of PNP which later was broken down to phenol and ammonia.  相似文献

In this study wastewaters of a sunflower oil factory in Elazig (Turkey) were investigated in a pilot-scale mesophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor by determination of removal of total lipids (TL) and fatty acids (FA). The removal efficiencies of TL and FA (linoleic, oleic, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arashidic, behenic and other FA) were above 70% at organic loading rates (OLR) between 1.6 and 7.8 kg COD/m(3)d and at optimum hydraulic retention times of 2.0 and 2.8 day. The conversion rate of removed COD to methane was between 0.16 and 0.354 m(3) CH(4)/kg COD.  相似文献

The anaerobic treatment of saline effluents using halophilic and halotolerant microbial consortia is of major interest. Inhibition of anaerobic digestion is known to occur at high salt content. However, it seems that the suitable adaptation of an anaerobic sludge makes possible the treatment of saline wastewater. In this study, a non-saline anaerobic sludge was inoculated in two anaerobic batch reactors operating with a different substrate (distillery vinasse and ethanol) and subjected to increasing NaCl concentrations. The performance of the digesters appeared to be highly dependent on the nature of the substrate, and a similar level of inhibition (i.e. around 90% of the specific loading rate and specific methanogenic activity) was stated at 10 g l−1 of NaCl with distillery vinasse and 60 g l−1 of NaCl with ethanol. The characterization of the microflora and its adaptation to increasing NaCl conditions were also investigated using molecular tools based on the analysis of genomic 16S rDNA. The microbial communities revealed a high diversity that could be maintained in both reactors despite the increase in NaCl concentrations.  相似文献

The feasibility of using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for the treatment of dairy wastewaters was explored. Two types of UASBs were used--one operating on anaerobic sludge granules developed by us from digested cowdung slurry (DCDS) and the other on the granules obtained from the reactors of M/s EID Parry treating sugar industry wastewaters. The reactors were operated at HRT of 3 and 12 h and on COD loading rates ranging from 2.4 kg per m3 of digester volume, per day to 13.5 kg m(-3) d(-1). At the 3 h HRT, the maximum COD reduction in the DCDS-seeded and the industrial sludge-seeded reactors was 95.6% and 96.3%, respectively, better than at 12 h HRT (90% and 92%, respectively). In both the reactors, the maximum, the second best, and the third best COD reduction occurred at the loading rates of 10.8, 8.6 and 7.2 kg m3 d(-1), respectively. At loading rates higher than 10.8 kg, the reactor performance dropped precipitously. Whereas in the first few months the reactors operating on sludge from EID Parry achieved better biodegradation of the waste, compared to the reactors operated on DCDS, the performance of the latter gradually improved and matched with the performance of the former.  相似文献

The toxicity of formaldehyde (FA) in batch assays, using volatile fatty acids (VFA) as co-substrate, and the continuous anaerobic treatment of wastewaters containing FA in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors was investigated. In batch studies, FA exerted a 50% methanogenic toxicity on VFA at concentrations of around 100 mg/l, 2.5 times lower than values reported with sucrose. Although at FA concentrations higher than 200 mg/l methanogenesis was completely inhibited, a partial recovery of the bacterial activity was observed after 250 h when the FA had been removed from the medium. The continuous anaerobic degradation of FA at concentrations up to 2 g/l, using 1.6 g/l of glucose as co-substrate, was studied in a UASB reactor. A stable and efficient operation was observed at organic loading rates (OLR) of 6.0 g COD/l·d and with a COD/FA ratio as low as 1.4. A synthetic substrate with the same characteristics as the effluents produced during fibreboard adhesives manufacturing (based on urea-FA), i.e. 0.95 g FA/l and 0.35 g urea/l, was treated in a UASB reactor. The applied OLR and nitrogen loading rate (NLR) were 3.45 g COD/l·d and 0.58 g N/l·d, respectively. COD removal efficiencies were maintained at 90–95%, FA and urea being completely degraded.  相似文献

Background

A modified laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was used to obtain methane by treating hydrous ethanol vinasse. Vinasses or stillage are waste materials with high organic loads, and a complex composition resulting from the process of alcohol distillation. They must initially be treated with anaerobic processes due to their high organic loads. Vinasses can be considered multipurpose waste for energy recovery and once treated they can be used in agriculture without the risk of polluting soil, underground water or crops. In this sense, treatment of vinasse combines the elimination of organic waste with the formation of methane. Biogas is considered as a promising renewable energy source. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum organic loading rate for operating a modified UASB reactor to treat vinasse generated in the production of hydrous ethanol from sugar cane molasses.

Results

The study showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 69% at an optimum organic loading rate (OLR) of 17.05 kg COD/m3-day, achieving a methane yield of 0.263 m3/kg CODadded and a biogas methane content of 84%. During this stage, effluent characterization presented lower values than the vinasse, except for potassium, sulfide and ammonia nitrogen. On the other hand, primers used to amplify the 16S-rDNA genes for the domains Archaea and Bacteria showed the presence of microorganisms which favor methane production at the optimum organic loading rate.

Conclusions

The modified UASB reactor proposed in this study provided a successful treatment of the vinasse obtained from hydrous ethanol production.Methanogen groups (Methanobacteriales and Methanosarcinales) detected by PCR during operational optimum OLR of the modified UASB reactor, favored methane production.

Anaerobic digestion of wastewater from a distillery industry having very high COD (1,10,000-1,90,000 mg/L) and BOD (50,000-60,000 mg/L) was studied in a continuously fed, up flow fixed film column reactor using different support materials such as charcoal, coconut coir and nylon fibers under varying hydraulic retention time and organic loading rates. The seed consortium was prepared by enrichment with distillery spent wash in a conventional type reactor having working capacity of 3 L and was used for charging the anaerobic column reactor. Amongst the various support materials studied the reactor having coconut coir could treat distillery spent wash at 8d hydraulic retention time with organic loading rate of 23.25 kg COD m(-3)d(-1) leading to 64% COD reduction with biogas production of 7.2 m3 m(-3)d(-1) having high methane yield without any pretreatment or neutralization of the distillery spent wash. This study indicates fixed film biomethanation of distillery spent wash using coconut coir as the support material appears to be a cost effective and promising technology for mitigating the problems caused by distillery effluent.  相似文献

The thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) of sewage sludge has often been found to be less stable than mesophilic treatment. In comparison to mesophilic digesters, thermophilic reactors treating sludge are generally characterized by relatively high concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the effluent along with poor effluent quality, indicating a lower level of process stability. However, reviewing the literature related to the procedure for obtaining a thermophilic inoculum, it seems that most of the problems associated with the instability and the accumulation of organic intermediates are the result of the manner in which the thermophilic sludge has been obtained. In this paper, the different options available for obtaining an anaerobic digester operating at thermophilic temperature (55°C) have been reviewed. In this light, rapid heating to the target temperature followed by the development of thermophilic microorganisms, which can be determined by VFA dropping to ≤500?mg acetic acid L?1 before increasing the organic loading rate (OLR), has been determined the most suitable means of establishing TAD.  相似文献

A study of anaerobic digestion of piggery wastewater was carried out in a laboratory-scale sludge bed reactor as a secondary treatment. The effect of organic volumetric loading rates (BV) in the range of 1.0-8.1 g TCOD/ld on the process performance was evaluated. The best results were obtained at BV equal to or lower than 4 g TCOD/ld. At higher BV values, the removal efficiency of the process decreased suddenly. A linear relationship was found between the effluent SCOD and the TVFA/alkalinity ratio (P). A relationship was found among the different operational variables (BV , removal efficiency, effluent soluble COD, soluble COD removal rate (R), retention factor (phi), specific microbial growth rate (mu), methane production rate per volume of reactor and per volume of waste treated--QM and qM, respectively) and the corresponding regression equations were obtained. An increase of BV determined a decrease of removal efficiency, phi and qM and an increase of effluent soluble COD, mu, R and QM. The value of the maximum specific microbial growth rate (muM) determined through the equation that correlated BV and mu was found to be 0.19 d(-1). This value was of the same magnitude as those reported in other works of anaerobic digestion of piggery waste.  相似文献

Debarking wastewaters of the forest industry contain high concentrations of tannins that are inhibitory to methane bacteria. The tannins can be polymerized to nontoxic colored compounds by the applications of an autoxidation pretreatment, enabling the anaerobic treatment of easily biodegradable components in the wastewater. The continuous anaerobic treatment of untreated and autoxidized pine bark extract was studied in laboratory-scale columns packed with a granular sludge bed. The autoxidation doubled the conversion efficiency of bark extract COD to methane (from 19 to 40%). After 5 months of operation, anaerobic treatment of the autoxidized extracts was feasible at high influent concentrations (14 g COD/L) and loading rates (26 g biodegradable COD/L . d) with 98% elimination of the biodegradable fraction. The detoxification pretreatment polymerized the toxic tannins to poorly biodegradable high molecular weight tannins and humic compounds which were not eliminated during anaerobic treatment. Although the original tannins of the untreated extract were eliminated by 60%, they were not biodegraded to volatile fatty acids and methane but instead were transformed to phenolic degradation intermediates (phenol, p-cresol, 3-phenyl-propionate, and carboxycyclohexane). Therefore, the autoxidation pretreatment did not decrease the content of readily biodegradable substrates which accounted for 53% of the extract COD. The recalcitrant COD expected in the effluents of reactors treating autoxidized debarking waste-water can be effectively separated by calcium precipitation prior to anaerobic treatment.  相似文献

Anaerobic acetate degradation at 70 degrees C and at 55 degrees C (as a reference) was studied by running laboratory upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors inoculated with mesophilic granular sludge. In UASB reactors fed with acetate-containing media (3 g of chemical oxygen demand [COD] per liter, corresponding to 47 mM acetate) approximately 50 days was needed at 70 degrees C and less than 15 days was needed at 55 degrees C to achieve an effluent COD of 500 to 700 mg/liter. In the UASB reactors at both 70 and 55 degrees C up to 90% of the COD was removed. Batch assays showed that sludges from two 70 degrees C UASB reactors, one run at a low effluent acetate concentration and the other run at a high effluent acetate concentration, exhibited slightly different responses to temperatures in the range from 37 to 70 degrees C. Both 70 degrees C sludges, as well as the 55 degrees C sludge, produced methane at temperatures of 37 to 73 degrees C. The 55 degrees C sludge exhibited shorter lag phases than the 70 degrees C sludges and higher specific methane production rates between 37 and 65 degrees C.  相似文献

Anaerobic acidogenesis of primary sludge: the role of solids retention time   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This research investigates the effect of solids retention time (SRT) on the acid-phase anaerobic digestion of primary sludge. A series of experiments were conducted using two continuous-flow 3-L units with the following configuration: a completely mixed reactor (CMR) with clarifier and solids recycle and an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Results show that C(2) to C(5) volatile fatty acids (VFA) were the predominant compounds formed. At a constant hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 h, variation in SRT from 10 to 20 days resulted in a slight increase in VFA production in both systems, but at a shorter SRT (5 days) a drastic drop in acid production was observed. In addition, the percent distribution of VFA was to some extent affected by the change in SRT. On the other hand, organic matter degradation [measured by the chemical oxygen demand (COD) specific solubilization rate or the percent volatile suspended solids (VSS) reduction] appeared to be independent of SRT, at least in the range investigated. The percent soluble COD in the form of VFA, however, increased steadily with increasing SRT, approaching the 90% level at 20 days. The remaining soluble COD in the effluent from these systems may be mainly attributed to metabolic intermediates and unused soluble substrate. (c) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

An acetic-acid-based synthetic wastewater of different organic concentrations was successfully treated at 35 degrees C in anaerobic downflow fixed-film reactors operated at high organic loading rates and short hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Substrate removal and methane production rates close to theoretical values of complete volumetric chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and maximum methane conversion were obtained. A high concentration of biofilm biomass was retained in the reactor. Steady-state biofilm concentration increased with increased organic loading rate and decreased HRTs, reaching a maximum of 8.3 kg VFS/m(3) at a loading rate of 17 kg COD/m(3) day. Biofilm substrate utilization rates of up to 1.6 kg COD/kg VFS day were achieved. Soluble COD utilization rates at various COD concentrations can be described by half-order reaction kinetics.  相似文献

The anaerobic transformation and degradation of nitrophenols by granular sludge was investigated in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors continuously fed with a volatile fatty acid (VFA) mixture as the primary substrate. During the start-up, subtoxic concentrations of 2-nitrophenol (2-NP), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and 2, 4-dinitrophenol (2, 4-DNP) were utilized. 4-NP and 2, 4-DNP were readily converted to the corresponding aromatic amine; whereas 2-NP was converted to nonaromatic products via intermediate formation of 2-aminophenol (2-AP). These conversions led to a dramatic detoxification of the mononitrophenols because the reactors treated the nitrophenolics at the concentrations which were over 25 times higher than those that caused severe inhibition. VFA removal efficiencies greater than 99% were achieved in both reactors at loading rates greater than 11.4 g COD per liter of reactor volume per day even at volumetric loading of mononitrophenols up to 910 mg/L . d.The sludges obtained from each of the reactors at the end of the continuous experiments were assayed for their specific nitrophenol reducing activity in the presence of different primary substrates. Reduction rates of 45 and 26 mg/g volatile suspended solids per day were observed for 2-NP and 4-NP, respectively, when utilizing the VFA mixture as primary substrate. Hydrogen, an interspecies-reduced compound, and substrates that provide interspecies-reducing equivalents-such as butyrate, propionate, and ethanol stimulated nitrophenol reduction, whereas acetate and methanol did not. Anaerobic batch biodegradability tests with the 2-NP-adapted sludge revealed that its corresponding aromatic amine, 2-AP, was degraded to methane at a specific rate of 14.5 mg/g VSS . d. Acetate was observed to be the major intermediate during 2-AP degradation in the presence of a specific methanogenic inhibitor 2-bromoethanesulfonate. The results of this study indicate that UASB reactors can be applied to rapidly detoxify and, under certain circumstances, degrade nitroaromatic compounds. (c) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The effect of influent DO/COD (dissolved oxygen/chemical oxygen demand) ratio on the performance of an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) containing GAC was studied. A high influent DO concentration was found to have adverse impacts on organic removal efficiency, methane production, and effluent suspended solids (SS) concentration. These problems resulted with a DO/COD ratio of 0.12, but not at a lower ratio of 0.05. At first organic removal appeared satisfactory at the higher DO/COD ratio at a hydraulic retention time of 0.30 h, but soon a rapid growth of oxygen-consuming zoogloeal-like organisms resulted, eventually causing high effluent SS concentrations. The influent DO also had an inhibitory effect, resulting in a long recovery time for adequate methanogenic activity to return after influent DO removal began. With the growing interest in anaerobic treatment of low COD wastewaters, the increased possibility of similar adverse DO effects occurring needs consideration.  相似文献

The application of the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength soluble wastewaters using ethanol as a model substrate was investigated in laboratory-scale reactors at 30oC. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was above 80% at organic loading rates up to12 g COD/L . d with influent concentrations as low as 100 to 200 mg COD/L. These results demonstrate the suitability of the EGBS reactor for the anaerobic treatment of low-strength wastewaters. The high treatment performance can be attributed to the intense mixing regime obtained by high hydraulic and organic loads. Good mixing of the bulk liquid phase for the substrate-biomass contact and adequate expansion of the substrate-biomass contact and adequate expansion of the sludge bed for the degassing were obtained when the liquid upflow velocity (V(up)) was greater than 2.5 m/h. Under such conditions, an extremely low apparent K(s) value for acetoclastic methanogenesis of 9.8 mg COD/L was observed. The presence of dissolved oxygen in the wastewater had no detrimental effect on the treatment performance. Sludge piston flotation from pockets of biogas accumulating under the sludge bed occurred at V(up) lower than 2.5 m/h due to poor bed expansion. This problem is expected only in small diameter laboratory-scale reactors. A. more important restriction of the EGSB reactor was the sludge washout occurring at V(up) higher than 5.5 m/h and which was intensified at organic loads higher than 7 g COD/L. d due to buoyancy forces from the gas production. To achieve an equilibrium between the mixing intensity and the sludge hold-up, the operation should be limited to an organic loading rate of 7 g COD/L d. and to a liquid up-flow velocity between 2.5 and 5.5 m/h (c) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Two continuous stirred tanks reactors (CSTR) and four anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AFBR) were used to study the treatment of a synthetic meat waste during single-and two-stage anaerobic treatment. Four configurations were investigated; a single-stage CSTR and AFBR and the two-stage systems CSTR-AFBR and AFBR-AFBR. Startup of the anaerobic reactors was achieved within 50 days by use of a regime that included stepped increases in influent COD, methanol substitution of the substrate, and addition of essential trace metals such as cobalt and nickel. Two-stage reactors removed up to 85% of influent COD concentrations of 5000 mg/L, whereas the single-stage AFBR and CSTR removed 76 and 9%, respectively. The proportion of methane in the effluent gases increased as the influent COD concentration was increased. Volumetric production of methane was greatest for the first stage of the AFBR-AFBR system. Solids retention times calculated for the AFBRs ranged from 7 to 12 days, sufficient to support methanogenesis. The AFBRs and two-stage systems were more resistant to an influent pH shock from the operating value of pH 6.8 down to pH 3 than the CSTRs and single-stage reactors. It was concluded that high-rate anaerobic treatment systems were applicable to meat industry wastewaters and that two-stage digestion produced a better quality effluent.  相似文献
