Connections among species-abundance (i-m i ), species-frequency (i-F i ), and species-sample size (S n -n) relationships were examined on the basis of the mapping data of a natural forest in Thailand. The spatial distribution of individual trees without any discrimination of species was nearly random. Provided that the spatial distribution of each species was random, thei-m i and thei-F i relationship was reconstructed from each other in terms of the total number of species (S) and the total number of individuals (N) in the data. The number of species (S n ) in a subsample consisting ofn individuals was then obtained from thei-F i relationship. Logarithm ofS n increased with logn and showed a convex curve through the origin. The values of diversity indices based onN andS(orn andS n ) were affected by sample size. These trends were further examined on the basis of 944 data sets of biotic communities and three mathematical models of anS-N relationship. The properties of species-area relation were discussed in the light of these results.  相似文献

The theory of organismic sets, developed in previous papers (Bull. Math. Biophysics,29, 139–152; 389–393; 643–647) is further generalized. To conform better with some biological and sociological facts the basic definitions are made more general. The conclusion is reached that every organismic setS o is in general the union of three disjoined subsetsS o1 ,S o2 andS o3 . Of these the subsetS o1 , called the “core” is equivalent to an organismic set defined in previous publications. Its functioning is essential for the functioning ofS o . The subsetsS o2 andS o3 , taken alone, are not organismic sets. The first of them is responsible for such biological or sociological functions which are not necessary for the “immediate” survival ofS o but which are important for adaptation to changing environment and are therefore essential for a “long range survival.” The second one,S o3 , is responsible for biological or social functions which are irrelevant for the survival ofS o . Biological and sociological examples ofS o2 andS o3 are given. In addition to the fundamental theorem established in the first of the above mentioned papers, three new conclusions are derived. One is that in organismic sets of order higher than zero not all elements are specialized. The second is that every organismic set of order higher than zero is mortal. The third is that with increasing specialization the intensities of some activities in some elements ofS o are reduced. Again the biological and sociological examples are given. At the end some very general speculations are made on the possible relation between biology and physics and on the possibility of “relationalizing” physics.  相似文献

Aim Studies have typically employed species–area relationships (SARs) from sample areas to fit either the power relationship or the logarithmic (exponential) relationship. However, the plots from empirical data often fall between these models. This article proposes two complementary and hybrid models as solutions to the controversy regarding which model best fits sample‐area SARs. Methods The two models are and , where SA is number of species in an area, A, where z, b, c1 and c2 are predetermined parameters found by calculation, and where d and n are parameters to be fitted. The number of parameters is reduced from six to two by fixing the model at either end of the scale window of the data set, a step that is justified by the condition that the error or the bias, or both, in the first and the last data points is negligible. The new hybrid models as well as the power model and the logarithmic model are fitted to 10 data sets. Results The two proposed models fit well not only to Arrhenius’ and Gleason’s data sets, but also to the other six data sets. They also provide a good fit to data sets that follow a sigmoid (or triphasic) shape in log–log space and to data sets that do not fall between the power model and the logarithmic model. The log‐transformation of the dependent variable, S, does not affect the curve fit appreciably, although it enhances the performance of the new models somewhat. Main conclusions Sample‐area SARs have previously been shown to be convex upward, convex downward (concave), sigmoid and inverted sigmoid in log–log space. The new hybrid models describe successfully data sets with all these curve shapes, and should therefore produce good fits also to what are termed triphasic SARs.  相似文献

Summary In hybrid breeding programs, testcross evaluation of lines can be done during the early stages of selfing (early testing) or delayed until the lines are near-homozygous. To evaluate the usefulness of early testing, the expected genetic and phenotypic correlations between testcross performance at different selfing generations were examined. The genetic correlation (r GnGn ) between testcross performance of S n and S n , (n>n) individuals or lines is equal to the square root of the ratio of their testcross genetic variances, and it is a function of the inbreeding coefficients (F) at the two selfing generations, i.e., r GnGn=[(1+F n )/(1+F n )]0.5. The genetic correlation between testcross performance of lines and their directly descended homozygous (n=) lines is 0.71 for S1; 0.87 for S2, 0.93 for S3, 0.97 for S4, 0.98 for S5, and 0.99 for S5 lines. The effectiveness of early testing is limited mainly by nongenetic effects. The square root of testcross heritability at generation n sets the upper limit on the correlation between phenotypic value at generation n and genotypic value at homozygosity. The probabilities of correctly retaining S n individuals or lines that have superior testcross performance at homozygosity (n=) indicate that early testing should be effective in identifying lines with above- and below-average combining ability. However, the risk of losing lines with superior combining ability is high if strong (best 10%) selection pressure is applied during early testing. If only a small proportion of lines is retained based on testcross performance and/or if the heritability of the trait is low, selfing for two or three generations prior to testcrossing may be desirable to increase the likelihood of retaining lines that perform well at homozygosity. Abstract: Rat medullary brain segments containing primarily nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) were used for superfusion studies of evoked transmitter release and for isotherm receptor binding assays. Isotherm binding assays with [3H]CGS-21680 on membranes prepared from NTS tissue blocks indicated a single high-affinity binding site with a KD of 5.1 ± 1.4 nM and a Bmax of 20.6 ± 2.4 fmol/mg of protein. The binding density for [3H]CGS-21680 on NTS membranes was 23 times less than comparable binding on membranes from striatal tissue. Electrically stimulated (1 min at 25 mA, 2 ms, 3 Hz) release of [3H]norepinephrine ([3H]NE) from 400-µm-thick NTS tissue slices resulted in an S2/S1 ratio of 0.96 ± 0.02. Superfusion of single tissue slices with 0.1–100 nM CGS-21680, a selective adenosine A2a receptor agonist, for 5 min before the S2 stimulus produced a significant concentration-dependent increase in the S2/S1 fractional release ratio that was maximal (31.3% increase) at 1.0 nM. However, superfusion of tissue slices with CGS-21680 over the same concentration range for 20 min before the S2 stimulus did not alter the S2/S1 ratio significantly from control release ratios. The augmented release of [3H]NE mediated by 1.0 nM CGS-21680 with a 5-min tissue exposure was abolished by 1.0 and 10 nM CGS-15943 as well as by 100 nM 8-(3-chlorostyryl)caffeine, both A2a receptor antagonists, but not by 1.0 nM 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine, the A1 receptor antagonist. Taken together, these results suggest that CGS-21680 augmented the evoked release of [3H]NE in the NTS via activation of presynaptic A2a receptors within the same concentration range as the binding affinity observed for [3H]CGS-21680. It was also apparent that this population of presynaptic adenosine A2a receptors in the NTS desensitized within 20 min because the augmenting action of CGS-21680 on evoked transmitter release was not evident at the longer interval.  相似文献

The interest for lanthanide circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been quickly growing for 10 years. However, very few of these studies have involved correlation between the dissymmetry factor (glum) and the chemical modifications in a series of chiral ligands. Four polymeric compounds of Eu(III) were prepared by using a series of binaphtyl derivatives for which the size of the π system as well as the number of stereogenic elements (i.e., the binaphtyl moiety) are modulated. The resulting {[Eu(hfac)3((S)/(R)-Lx)]}n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)3((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-Lx)]}n (x = 2 and 4) have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction by comparison with the X-ray structures on single crystal of the Dy(III) analogs. In solution, the structure of the complexes is deeply modified and becomes monomeric. The nature of the ligand induces change in the shape of the CPL spectra in CH2Cl2 solution. Furthermore, a large |glum| = 0.12 of the magnetic-dipole transition for the [Eu(hfac)3((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-L2)] complex involving the ligand with three stereogenic elements and an extended ?? system has been measured. This report also shows CPL measurements in solid state for the series of {[Eu(hfac)3((S)/(R)-Lx)]}n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)3((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-Lx)]}n (x = 2 and 4) polymers.  相似文献

Novozyme 435 could be a highly efficient catalyst in the asymmetric acylation of (R,S)-3-n-butylphthalide in tetrahydrofuran–hexane solvents. The effect of various reaction parameters such as agitation velocity, water content, mixed media, temperature, concentration of Novozyme 435, molar ratio of acetic anhydride to (R,S)-3-n-butylphthalide, reaction time, enantiomeric excess of substrate (eeS), enantiomeric excess of product (eeP), and enantioselective ratio (E) were studied. Tetrahydrofuran markedly improved (R,S)-3-n-butylphthalide conversion, enantiomeric excess of remaining 3-n-butylphthalide, and enantiomeric ratio. The optimum media were 50% (v/v) tetrahydrofuran and 50% (v/v) hexane. Other ideal reaction conditions were an agitation velocity of 150 rpm, 0.4% (v/v) water content, temperature of 30°C, 8 mg/mL dosage of Novozyme 435, 8:1 (0.4 mmol: 0.05 mmol) molar ratio of acetic anhydride to (R,S)-3-n-butylphthalide, and a reaction time of 48 hr. Under the optimum conditions, 96.4% eeS and 49.3% conversion of (R,S)-3-n-butylphthalide were achieved. In addition, enantiomeric excess of the product was above 98.0%.  相似文献

A simple theoretical model of a Darwinian system (a periodic system with a multiplication phase and a selection phase) of entities (initial form of polymer strand, primary mutant and satellite mutants) is given. First case: one mutant is considered. One individual of the mutant appears in the multiplication phase of the first generation. The probabilities to find N mutants WnM(N) after the multiplication phase M of the n-th generation (with probability δ of an error in the replication, where all possible errors are fatal errors) and WnS(N) after the following selection phase S (with probability β that one individual survives) are given iteratively. The evolutionary tree is evaluated. Averages from the distributions and the probability of extinction WS(0) are obtained. Second case: two mutants are considered (primary mutant and new form). One individual of the primary mutant appears in the multiplication phase of the first generation. The probabilities to find Np primary mutants and Nm of the new form WnM(Np, Nm) after the multiplication phase M of the n-th generation (probability ε of an error in the replication of the primary mutant giving the new form) and WnS(Np, Nm) after the following selection phase S (probabilities βp and βm that one individual each of the primary mutant and of the new form survives) are given iteratively. We measured adult oviposition preference, larval growth, and feeding behaviour of the crucifer specialist Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) on plants of Brassica napus (L.) cv. Express (Brassicaceae), grown under three different sulphur regimes. The nutrient solutions used were the following: one sulphur‐free (S0), one normal sulphur (Sn, normal field concentration), and one sulphur‐rich (S+, double concentration of Sn). Females laid more eggs on Sn than on S0 plants, while only a slight, non‐significant difference was observed between Sn and S+ plants. Moreover, the development time from hatching to emergence was significantly shorter, and adults were heavier on Sn than on S0 plants. Comparing these same two parameters from Sn and S+ plants, we found a shorter development time on plants rich in sulphur, although this trend was not statistically significant. Larval feeding preferences were tested in a dual choice assay using leaf discs. A significantly higher number of larvae preferred leaf discs of Sn plants than those of S0 plants. Furthermore, the larvae preferred S+ to Sn discs. An optimal supply of sulphur to oilseed rape is necessary for a good seed harvest, and it also plays an important role in acceptance by P. xylostella of the host plant. Maintaining higher levels of sulphur in the plant nutrient solution benefits insect performance, both at the adult and larval stage.  相似文献

4-Chloro-2-butynyl N-(3-chlorophenyl)carbamate (Barban) is a herbicide whose alkaline hydrolysis leads quantitatively to 3-chloroaniline, after releasing the chlorine atom from the ester group. The dechlorination step proceeds via a nucleophilic substitution reaction of the type Sn2-Sn2 corresponding to an attack by hydroxide ion at the carbon atoms that are a and y to the chlorine atom. The 4-hydroxy-2-butynyl and 2-oxo-3-butenyl N-(3-chlorophenyl)carbamates thus formed are hydrolysed to the N-(3-chlorophenyl)carbamic acid which, on decarboxylation, gives 3-chloroaniline.  相似文献

Copper and other transition metal ions and their complexes are catalysts for the decomposition of nitrosothiols. In this way they catalyze the biological functions of nitrosothiols. The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of two nitrosothiols, S-nitrosothiolactic acid and S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), with copper(I) are reported. The kinetics of the reaction of Cu(MeCN) n + (n=0–3) with the nitrosothiols were studied. The results indicate that Cu+ aq is the active species in the GSNO system, with k(Cu+ aq+GSNO)=(9.4 ±2.0)×107 dm3 mol−1 s−1 . The results also indicate that the Cu(MeCN) n + (n=0–3) complexes react with S-nitrosothiolactic acid. Transient species are formed in these processes. The results suggest that these species contain copper(I) and thiol. The results shed light on the catalytic role of copper complexes in the decomposition of S-nitrosothiols. <Matthiola tricuspidata> R. Br.: karyological and embryological studies. — Karyological and embryological observations on specimens of Matthiola tricuspidata R. Br. (Cruciferae) from Siracusa (Sicily) are reported. The chromosome number, 2n = 14, is confirmed, its karyotype having the following features:

z = 2n = 14 = 2M1 + 2M3 2 + 2M3 + 2M4 + 2S1 + 2S2 + 2S3

A mutant metaphase is reported. The mutation concerns only one chromosome of pair 2S1. The development of the megagametophyte follows the normal or Polygonum type. The three antipodal cells disappear very soon. The hypostase is probably connected with the xerotermic habitat in which the species lives. The endosperm is of the nuclear type.  相似文献

1 Oilseed rape plants (Brassica napus) (L.) (Brassicaceae) were grown under different levels of sulphur supply and tested for the oviposition preference and larval performance of cabbage root flies Delia radicum (L.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae). 2 Adult females laid more than three‐fold as many eggs on control Sn (normal field concentration) than on sulphur‐free S0 plants. By contrast, no significant difference was observed between control and double normal concentration (S+) plants. 3 The larval performance was evaluated using three additional, intermediate sulphur levels between S0 and Sn, and the plants were infected with equal numbers of eggs. The percentage pupation at the end of larval feeding ranged from 6% (S0) to 32% (Sn or S+) and the average number of pupae, or of emerging flies, was significantly correlated with sulphur application. 4 The weight of emerging males and females was correlated with plant sulphur supply. 5 The duration of development from eggs to adult emergence was approximately 2 days longer in females than in males. Females originating from plants with a normal or higher sulphur supply tended to emerge 1–2 days earlier.  相似文献

Wide-compatibility (WC) is one of the most important traits in rice, which can overcome the fertility barrier in the indica/japonica hybrids, and hence to make it possible to utilize the higher yield potential of inter-subspecific hybrids. The S 5 n gene located on chromosome 6 has been previously reported to be responsible for the wide-compatibility in rice. Here we report the precise location of the S 5 n gene. In the first-pass mapping, the S 5 n gene was restricted within a 200 kb region by using a population of 242 isogenic lines in combination with high-density markers developed in the S 5 region. In the fine mapping, the S 5 region was further saturated with newly developed markers and more isogenic lines (549 in total) were investigated. Eventually, the S 5 n gene was mapped within a 50 kb region delimited by the left marker J13 and the right marker J17. One BAC clone screened from the BAC library of the WC rice variety 02428 covered the whole S 5 region. Sequence analysis of the 50 kb region revealed two candidate genes, coding an aspartyl protease and a hypothetical protein. This result would greatly accelerate both cloning and marker-assisted selection of this important S 5 n gene. Qing Ji and Jufei Lu have contributed equally to this paper.  相似文献

To estimate the heritabilities of growth‐related traits in large yellow croaker, Larimichthys crocea, three independent full‐factorial crosses were created by crossing four males × four females, seven males × three females and four males × three females (set 1, set 2 and set 3). At 13 months post‐hatch, the juveniles were collected from three cross sets and measured for body mass (M), standard length (LS) and body height (HB). In addition, the parentage of the juveniles was assigned by genotyping six or seven polymorphic microsatellite loci. Out of the 959 juveniles, 99·6% could be assigned to a single parental pair. Heritabilities of growth‐related traits were estimated for individual and combined sets with the pedigrees reconstructed by using microsatellite genotypes. The heritability estimates at 13 month‐old were 0·02–0·30 for M, 0·02–0·25 for LS and 0·03–0·36 for HB. These results showed that the heritabilities of M, LS and HB were different among three sets, which suggested that different breeding strategies should be adopted for different sets.  相似文献

Summary A population genetic model is proposed for the reproduction of self-incompatible inbred lines in which incompatibility is controlled by 1–4 loci. From theoretical considerations it was expected that: a) with the random matings of lines In, (obtained by self-pollination of n generations), some lines would be cross-incompatible (all the plants within these lines would be homozygous for S-genes) and the rest would be cross-compatible (retain heterozygosity for one or more S-genes); b) in the case of random matings of Unes InGm (obtained by self-pollination of n generations and by random pollination for m generations), some lines would be cross-incompatible (heterozygous for one S-gene) and the rest would be cross-compatible (retain heterozygosity for two or more S-genes); c) the relative proportion of sterile plants, obtained by random pollination of cross-compatible lines, would be related to the number of segregating S-loci and to the generation in which the lines are studied.Forty-four inbred lines of sugar beet derived from self-incompatible plants of a population were analysed. Comparisons of the observed values with the theoretically expected ones demonstrated that: a) of 18 In (I1-I4) lines, 6 were cross-incompatible (homozygous for S-genes) and 12 were cross-compatible having one S-locus segregating in 7 lines and two S-loci segregating in 5 lines; b) of 22 InG1 (I2G1 and I3G1) lines, one line was self-fertile, 7 lines were cross-incompatible (heterozygous for one S-loci) and 14 lines were cross-compatible (heterozygous for two S-loci).No line was found to have three or more segregating S-loci. The results of this population genetics analysis of self- and cross-incompatibility in sugar beet comply with diallel analysis data on sugar beet incompatibility and indicates that it is under the gametophytic control of two basic S-loci.  相似文献

Δ53β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity transforms biologically inactive Δ53β hydroxy steroids into the active Δ43-keto products (e.g. pregnenolone to progesterone). Using a cytochemical procedure which allows for the continuous microdensitometric monitoring of an enzyme reaction as it proceeds and a well described cytochemical assay for Δ53β HSD we have analysed the initial velocity rates (Vo) for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) binding to this enzyme in regressing (i.e. 20α hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase positive) corpus luteum (CL) cells in unfixed tissue sections (5 μm) of the dioestrous and proestrous rat ovary. The results are mean ± S.E.M. The relationship between DHEA concentration (0 to 50 μM) and Δ53β HSD activity in the dioestrous corpora lutea was sigmoidal and had an atypical 1/Vo versus 1/S plot, the x intercept being positive. Using a 1/Vo versus 1/S2 plot the Vmax was determined to be 1·0 ± 0·08 μmol min?1 mg?1 CL (n = 6). The Hill constant was 2·7 ± 0·02 (n = 6) suggesting a high degree of positive co-operativity for DHEA binding. The S concentration for half maximal activity was 17 ± 1 μmoles (n = 6). In the corpora lutea cells of the proestrous ovary, the Vmax for DHEA transformation was unchanged (0·95 ± 0·04 μmol min?1 mg?1, n = 3) whilst the S0·5 was significantly increased to 27 ± 0·1 (p < 0·01, n = 3). The Hill constant remained positive being 2·9 ± 0·2 (n = 3). NAD+ binding to 3β HSD in regressing corpora lutea of the proestrous ovary has been demonstrated previously to be hyperbolic and fit the classical Michaelis-Menten model.1 Extending the analysis of NAD+ binding to the regressing corpus luteum of the dioestrous rat ovary revealed similar kinetic characteristics to that seen with the proestrous enzyme, the apparent Vmax and Km being 0·84 ± 0·04 μmol min?1 mg?1 CL (n = 3) and 27 ± 7 μmol 1?1 (n = 3) respectively. The Hill constant was 1·1 ± 0·03 (n = 3), indicating no co-operativity of co-factor binding.  相似文献

The method of minimum evolution reconstructs a phylogenetic tree T for n taxa given dissimilarity data d. In principle, for every tree W with these n leaves an estimate for the total length of W is made, and T is selected as the W that yields the minimum total length. Suppose that the ordinary least-squares formula S W (d) is used to estimate the total length of W. A theorem of Rzhetsky and Nei shows that when d is positively additive on a completely resolved tree T, then for all WT it will be true that S W (d) > S T (d). The same will be true if d is merely sufficiently close to an additive dissimilarity function. This paper proves that as n grows large, even if the shortest branch length in the true tree T remains constant and d is additive on T, then the difference S W (d)-S T (d) can go to zero. It is also proved that, as n grows large, there is a tree T with n leaves, an additive distance function d T on T with shortest edge ε, a distance function d, and a tree W with the same n leaves such that d differs from d T by only approximately ε/4, yet minimum evolution incorrectly selects the tree W over the tree T. This result contrasts with the method of neighbor-joining, for which Atteson showed that incorrect selection of W required a deviation at least ε/2. It follows that, for large n, minimum evolution with ordinary least-squares can be only half as robust as neighbor-joining.  相似文献
