Increasing specific leaf weight (SLW) may improve leaf apparent photosynthesis (AP) in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] but screening for SLW and AP is laborious. The Objectives of this study were (i) to determine the time course of SLW and chlorophyll concentration in experimental lines selected for differences in SLW and (ii) to evaluate the potential use of the Minolta 502 SPAD meter as a rapid estimator of SLW, AP and chlorophyll concentration in leaves of soybean. In 1991 and 1992, sixteen experimental lines representing extremes in SLW were grown at Urbana, IL, and West Lafayette, IN, with three replications at each location. SPAD values, SLW and AP were measured at the R2 (full flower), R4 (full pod) and R5 (beginning seed) growth stages. In 1992 SLW, SPAD values and chlorophyll concentration were measured weekly. Seasonal patterns of SPAD values, SLW, and chlorophyll concentration were very similar through R5. After R5, SLW continued to increase but SPAD values and chlorophyll concentration declined. SPAD values and SLW were highly correlated at the R2, R4 and R5 stages at both locations and in both years. Environmental conditions during this research were not suitable for maximum AP expression, which is likely why AP and SPAD values were correlated only at the R4 growth stage at Urbana in 1992. SPAD measurements were consistent across diverse environments and effectively separated the high SLW lines from the low SLW lines. Use of leaf meters to provide an instantaneous assessment of leaf chlorophyll has become common, but calibration of meter output into direct units of leaf chlorophyll concentration has been difficult and an understanding of the relationship between these two parameters has remained elusive. We examined the correlation of soybean (Glycine max) and maize (Zea mays L.) leaf chlorophyll concentration, as measured by organic extraction and spectrophotometric analysis, with output (M) of the Minolta SPAD-502 leaf chlorophyll meter. The relationship is non-linear and can be described by the equation chlorophyll (mol m–2)=10(M0.265), r 2=0.94. Use of such an exponential equation is theoretically justified and forces a more appropriate fit to a limited data set than polynomial equations. The exact relationship will vary from meter to meter, but will be similar and can be readily determined by empirical methods. The ability to rapidly determine leaf chlorophyll concentrations by use of the calibration method reported herein should be useful in studies on photosynthesis and crop physiology.Abbreviations Chl- chlorophyll - M- SPAD-502 meter value  相似文献

We report effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (Ca) on leaf area index (LAI) of a Florida scrub‐oak ecosystem, which had regenerated after fire for between three and five years in open‐top chambers (OTCs) and was yet to reach canopy closure. LAI was measured using four nondestructive methods, calibrated and tested in experiments performed in calibration plots near the OTCs. The four methods were: PAR transmission through the canopy, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), hemispherical photography, and allometric relationships between plant stem diameter and plant leaf area. Calibration experiments showed: (1) Leaf area index could be accurately determined from either PAR transmission through the canopy or hemispherical photography. For LAI determined from PAR transmission through the canopy, ecosystem light extinction coefficient (k) varied with season and was best described as a function of PAR transmission through the canopy. (2) A negative exponential function described the relationship between NDVI and LAI; (3) Allometric relationships overestimated LAI. Throughout the two years of this study, LAI was always higher in elevated Ca, rising from, 20% during winter, to 55% during summer. This seasonality was driven by a more rapid development of leaf area during the spring and a relatively greater loss of leaf area during the winter, in elevated Ca. For this scrub‐oak ecosystem prior to canopy closure, increased leaf area was an indirect mechanism by which ecosystem C uptake and canopy N content were increased in elevated Ca. In addition, increased LAI decreased potential reductions in canopy transpiration from decreases in stomatal conductance in elevated Ca. These findings have important implications for biogeochemical cycles of C, N and H2O in woody ecosystems regenerating from disturbance in elevated Ca.  相似文献

对4月份至11月份金叶银杏‘万年金'( Ginkgo biloba ‘Wannianjin')32个半同胞子代无性系与亲本的叶色差异进行比较;比较了不同色系叶片的色素含量和比值及叶色参数(L*、a*和b*)的变化,分析了叶色参数与叶片色素含量的相关性;并观察了不同色系的叶绿体超微结构。结果表明:32个半同胞子代无性系可被分为金黄、浅黄、草绿和蓝绿4个色系。随时间推移,草绿和蓝绿色系叶片的总叶绿素( Chl)、叶绿素a( Chla)、叶绿素b( Chlb)和类胡萝卜素( Car)含量均呈“双峰型”变化趋势,Car/Chl和Car/Chla比值的变幅均较小;而金黄和浅黄色系叶片的上述色素含量呈“升高—降低—升高”变化趋势,Car/Chl和Car/Chla比值总体呈“迅速下降—相对稳定—缓慢升高”的变化趋势。各色系叶片的上述色素含量在夏季均不同程度下降,Car/Chlb比值变化差异较大,且金黄和浅黄色系的各色素含量均低于草绿和蓝绿色系。随时间推移,金黄和浅黄色系叶片的L*、a*和b*值以及草绿和蓝绿色系叶片的L*和b*值均先降低后升高,后2个色系的a*值则先升高后下降;并且,前2个色系的L*和b*值总体上显著高于后2个色系,而a*值则总体上低于后2个色系。金黄色系的Chla和Chl含量与L*和a*值显著负相关,而其Car/Chl和Car/Chla比值则与L*、a*和b*值显著或极显著正相关;浅黄色系的Chlb含量与a*值显著负相关,其Car/Chla比值与L*和b*值以及Car/Chlb比值与a*值均显著正相关;草绿色系的Chla含量与L*值显著负相关,其Car/Chla比值与L*和b*值以及Car/Chlb比值与a*值均显著正相关;这3个色系叶片的其余指标间以及蓝绿色系叶片的各指标间均无显著相关性。观察结果显示:金黄和浅黄色系的叶绿体基粒片层发育不健全,基粒片层可见但排列较疏松,且无明显垛叠,分布范围小而稀疏;蓝绿和草绿色系叶绿体的基粒类囊体垛叠层数均较多,基粒片层发达且排列紧致、整齐,分布范围大而稠密。综合分析结果表明:‘万年金'4个色系半同胞子代无性系叶片的呈色差异和叶色变化由多种因素控制,其中,Car/Chl和Car/Chla比值高且叶绿体基粒片层发育不健全是叶片呈黄色的主要原因。  相似文献

Thirty-three Phytophthora meadii isolates were obtained from different Hevea brasiliensisclones grown in different climatic regions in Sri Lanka. Growth, morphology and pathogenicity of the isolates were compared. Growth and pathogenicity levels varied among the isolates. Some isolates obtained from moderately susceptible rubber clones were highly pathogenic, compared to isolates obtained from resistant clones. Highly pathogenic isolates produced a higher number of sporangia on agar at 27 ± 2°C. It was impossible to group isolates according to the clone or the region from where they were obtained.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Determining climate change feedbacks from tropical rainforests requires an understanding of how carbon gain through photosynthesis and loss through respiration will be altered. One of the key changes that tropical rainforests may experience under future climate change scenarios is reduced soil moisture availability. In this study we examine if and how both leaf photosynthesis and leaf dark respiration acclimate following more than 12 years of experimental soil moisture deficit, via a through‐fall exclusion experiment (TFE) in an eastern Amazonian rainforest. We find that experimentally drought‐stressed trees and taxa maintain the same maximum leaf photosynthetic capacity as trees in corresponding control forest, independent of their susceptibility to drought‐induced mortality. We hypothesize that photosynthetic capacity is maintained across all treatments and taxa to take advantage of short‐lived periods of high moisture availability, when stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthesis can increase rapidly, potentially compensating for reduced assimilate supply at other times. Average leaf dark respiration (Rd) was elevated in the TFE‐treated forest trees relative to the control by 28.2 ± 2.8% (mean ± one standard error). This mean Rd value was dominated by a 48.5 ± 3.6% increase in the Rd of drought‐sensitive taxa, and likely reflects the need for additional metabolic support required for stress‐related repair, and hydraulic or osmotic maintenance processes. Following soil moisture deficit that is maintained for several years, our data suggest that changes in respiration drive greater shifts in the canopy carbon balance, than changes in photosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

Lianas are abundant in seasonal tropical forests, where they avoid seasonal water stress presumably by accessing deep‐soil water reserves. Although lianas are favoured in seasonal environments, their occurrence and abundance are low in semiarid environments. We hypothesized that lianas do not tolerate the great water shortage in the soil and air characteristic of semiarid environments, which would increase the risk of embolism. We compared the rooting depth of coarse roots, leaf dynamics, leaf water potential (ψleaf), embolism resistance (P50) and lethal levels of embolism (P88) between congeneric lianas that occur with different abundances in two semiarid sites differing in soil characteristics and vapour pressure deficit in the air (VPDair). Regardless of soil texture and depth, water availability was restricted to the rainy season. All liana species were drought deciduous and had superficial coarse roots (not deeper than 35 cm). P50 varied from ?1.8 to ?2.49 MPa, and all species operated under narrow safety margins against catastrophic (P50) and irreversible hydraulic failure (P88), even during the rainy season. In short, lianas that occur in semiarid environments have lower resistance to cavitation and limit carbon fixation to the rainy season because of leaf fall in the early dry season. We suggest that leaf shedding and shallow roots impairing carbon gain and growth in the dry season may explain why liana abundance is lower in semiarid than in other seasonally dry environments.  相似文献

在研究光合作用相关基因的过程中,获得了一个叶片为黄心(yellow heart,yh)的突变株,与野生型拟南芥(Col 0)相比,其新生叶片发黄,突变表型由隐性单基因控制。采用图位克隆及其精细定位技术,将yh突变基因定位在1号染色体的INS1_55_342与INS1_56_34区间,物理距离约为676 kb。通过测序得知yhAt1g64790第44个内含子剪接处有4个碱基的缺失,导致内含子剪切位点的变化。RT PCR分析显示,该基因表达降低,是At1g64790基因的一个新等位突变。研究表明,yh突变体与叶绿体的发育相关,可为进一步探究植物叶绿体和叶片发育机制提供新的遗传材料。  相似文献

The tropical rainforest mesocosm within the Biosphere 2 Laboratory, a model system of some 110 species developed over 12 years under controlled environmental conditions, has been subjected to a series of comparable drought experiments during 2000–2002. In each study, the mesocosm was subjected to a 4–6 week drought, with well‐defined rainfall events before and after the treatment. Ecosystem CO2 uptake rate (Aeco) declined 32% in response to the drought, with changes occurring within days and being reversible within weeks, even though the deeper soil layers did not become significantly drier and leaf‐level water status of most large trees was not greatly affected. The reduced Aeco during the drought reflected both morphological and physiological responses. It is estimated that the drought‐induced 32% reduction of Aeco has three principal components: (1) leaf fall increased two‐fold whereas leaf expansion growth of some canopy dominants declined to 60%, leading to a 10% decrease in foliage coverage of the canopy. This might be the main reason for the persistent reduction of Aeco after rewatering. (2) The maximum photosynthetic electron transport rate at high light intensities in remaining leaves was reduced to 71% for three of the four species measured, even though no chronic photo‐inhibition occurred. (3) Stomata closed, leading to a reduced ecosystem water conductance to water vapour (33% of pre‐drought values), which not only reduced ecosystem carbon uptake rate, but may also have implications for water and energy budgets of tropical ecosystems. Additionally, individual rainforest trees responded differently, expressing different levels of stress and stress avoiding mechanisms. This functional diversity renders the individual response heterogeneous and has fundamental implications to scale leaf level responses to ecosystem dynamics.  相似文献

Phenology of Tree Species in Bolivian Dry Forests   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Phenological characteristics of 453 individuals representing 39 tree species were investigated in two dry forests of the Lomerío region, Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The leaf, flower, and fruit production of canopy and sub–canopy forest tree species were recorded monthly over a two–year period. Most canopy species lost their leaves during the dry season, whereas nearly all sub–canopy species retained their leaves. Peak leaf fall for canopy trees coincided with the peak of the dry season in July and August. Flushing of new leaves was complete by November in the early rainy season. Flowering and fruiting were bimodal, with a major peak occurring at the end of the dry season (August–October) and a minor peak during the rainy season (January). Fruit development was sufficiently long in this forest that fruiting peaks actually tended to precede flowering peaks by one month. A scarcity of fruit was observed in May, corresponding to the end of the rainy season. With the exception of figs (Ficus), most species had fairly synchronous fruit production. Most canopy trees had small, wind dispersed seeds or fruits that matured during the latter part of the dry season, whereas many sub–canopy tree species produced larger animal– or gravity–dispersed fruits that matured during the peak of the rainy season. Most species produced fruit annually. Lomerio received less rainfall than other tropical dry forests in which phenological studies have been conducted, but rainfall can be plentiful during the dry season in association with the passage of Antarctic cold fronts. Still, phenological patterns in Bolivian dry forests appear to be similar to those of other Neotropical dry forests.  相似文献

The available data on climate over the past century indicate that the earth is warming. Important biological effects, including changes of plant and animal life cycle events, have already been reported. However, evidence of such effects is still scarce and has been mostly limited to northern latitudes. Here we provide the first long‐term (1952–2000) evidence of altered life cycles for some of the most abundant Mediterranean plants and birds, and one butterfly species. Average annual temperatures in the study area (Cardedeu, NE Spain) have increased by 1.4 °C over the observation period while precipitation remained unchanged. A conservative linear treatment of the data shows that leaves unfold on average 16 days earlier, leaves fall on average 13 days later, and plants flower on average 6 days earlier than in 1952. Fruiting occurs on average 9 days earlier than in 1974. Butterflies appear 11 days earlier, but spring migratory birds arrive 15 days later than in 1952. The stronger changes both in temperature and in phenophases timing occurred in the last 25 years. There are no significant relationships among changes in phenophases and the average date for each phenophase and species. There are not either significant differences among species with different Raunkiaer life‐forms or different origin (native, exotic or agricultural). However, there is a wide range of phenological alterations among the different species, which may alter their competitive ability, and thus, their ecology and conservation, and the structure and functioning of ecosystems. Moreover, the lengthening of plant growing season in this and other northern hemisphere regions may contribute to a global increase in biospheric activity.  相似文献

以疏花卫矛(Euonymus laxiflorus)、丝棉木(E.maackii)和卫矛(E.alatus)3种卫矛属植物为试验材料,测定叶片转色期叶色参数和相关生理生化指标,探讨各项指标的变化规律和内在联系,为优良色叶植物的筛选提供依据。结果表明:(1)转色期,疏花卫矛的明亮度参数L~*和色素参数b~*(黄/蓝)呈上升趋势,色素参数a~*(红/绿)变化不大;丝棉木的L~*和b~*呈先上升后下降的单峰曲线,a~*呈上升趋势;卫矛的L~*和b~*变化不大,a~*呈上升趋势。(2)3种植物的叶绿素含量在转色期呈明显下降趋势;疏花卫矛的花色素苷相对含量、花色素苷/叶绿素的值较为平稳,类胡萝卜素/叶绿素的值呈上升趋势;丝棉木和卫矛的花色素苷相对含量、花色素苷/叶绿素的值均呈上升趋势,类胡萝卜素/叶绿素的值保持平稳。(3)3种植物苯丙氨酸解氨酶(PAL)活性呈下降趋势,查尔酮异构酶(CHI)活性呈先上升后下降的单峰曲线;卫矛的过氧化物酶(POD)和多酚氧化酶(PPO)活性保持平稳,疏花卫矛和丝棉木的POD活性呈上升趋势,疏花卫矛的PPO活性保持平稳,丝棉木的PPO活性呈下降趋势。(4)疏花卫矛和卫矛的可溶性糖和淀粉的质量分数呈先上升后下降的单峰曲线,丝棉木的可溶性糖和淀粉的质量分数呈上升趋势。(5)相关性分析显示,疏花卫矛呈现黄色主要是因为叶绿素的分解,丝棉木和卫矛呈现红色是因为花色素苷的合成,可溶性糖、淀粉、CHI对花色素苷的合成有一定作用,POD对叶片呈现红色有促进作用,PAL和PPO活性对花色素苷的合成无显著影响。  相似文献

水晶艺建兰(Cymbidium ensifolium)因其叶片上呈现出白色透明状,犹如水晶而得名,观赏价值高,但是其形成机理不明确。该研究以建兰‘铁骨水晶’为试验材料,通过对水晶叶片和绿色叶片进行显微结构和超微结构观察,并结合转录组测序等方法,探索建兰水晶艺叶片形成的原因。结果表明:(1)建兰‘铁骨水晶’水晶叶片比绿色叶片薄,叶肉细胞数量减少,形状不规则,且叶绿体含量少;水晶叶片的表皮气孔数量较绿色叶片显著减少;水晶叶片的叶肉细胞中叶绿体结构发育不良,叶绿体双膜和类囊体膜模糊,细胞中存在着大量的嗜锇颗粒。(2)转录组数据分析显示,水晶叶片中与光合作用-天线蛋白、光合作用等代谢途径相关的基因表达量显著下降,而与色素合成代谢途径相关的基因表达量上升。研究推测,建兰水晶艺叶形成的原因可能是由于与光合作用相关的基因表达量降低,导致叶绿体发育不良,叶绿素合成受阻,从而形成白色透明状叶片。  相似文献

This work tests the hypothesis that sclerophylls (i.e. hard-leaved species) would be less efficient than malacophylls (i.e. soft-leaved species) in terms of water transport through the stem as well as within the leaf blade. Mean leaf surface area (AL), leaf specific mass (LSM) as well as shoot (KWL), stem (KSL) and leaf (KLL) hydraulic conductances were measured in eight Mediterranean evergreen sclerophylls and eight temperate deciduous malacophylls. No difference was observed between the two groups in terms of KLL and of the contribution of leaves to the overall shoot hydraulic resistance. Leaves represented in all cases 48 to 90 % of the shoot hydraulic resistance, suggesting that the sclerophyllous habitus does not per se lead to low efficiency in water transport within the leaf blade. A weak negative relationship (r2 = 0.252) appeared to exist between KSL and LSM. This might provide an explanation for the lower growth rates of sclerophylls with respect to malacophylls.  相似文献

在室内条件下 ,初步研究了寄主挥发物、叶色和表皮毛在美洲斑潜蝇寄主选择中的作用。在嗅觉仪试验中 ,寄主叶片挥发物对美洲斑潜蝇雌成虫没有明显的引诱作用 ;在叶色反应试验中 ,美洲斑潜蝇雌成虫在叶子圆片上停留的时间明显大于在滤纸圆片上停留的时间 (p<0 .0 1) ,其在有叶片区域分布的数量明显多于空白对照 (p <0 .0 1) ;在表皮毛试验中 ,美洲斑潜蝇在无毛叶片上的产卵量明显大于在有毛叶片上的产卵量 (p <0 .0 1)。上述结果表明 ,在对寄主的定向和定位过程中 ,美洲斑潜蝇的视觉起着重要的作用 ,而嗅觉不起作用 ;叶片表皮毛有抑制产卵的作用  相似文献

Bacillus thuringiensis isolates with different spectral activities were not equally efficacious when applied to cabbage at the same number of IUs/ha for protection against larvae of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni. Preparations of the isolates were standardized against T. ni larvae. Variety galleriae isolates (HD-196 and HD-153) were the most efficacious per applied IU, and a K-73 type variety kurstaki (HD-73) was the least efficacious per applied IU. A variety thuringiensis (HD-264) and a K-1 type variety kurstaki (HD-1) were intermediate in efficacy per applied IU. Speed of kill and, to some extent, differences in the amount of food consumed appear to be responsible for the differences in efficacy per applied IU. When more potent B. thuringiensis isolates are discovered and developed, the recommended field dosages for the new isolates must be determined by actual field experimentation rather than by extrapolation from existing HD-1 data.  相似文献
