Twenty lakes in the Matamek and nearby watersheds were sampled in the summer of 1983 for water chemistry and surficial sediments. Thirty-two physical and chemical variables, including pH, alkalinity, cations and metal concentrations were measured on samples from the epilimnion and hypolimnion of each lake. In three lakes, two to four replicate cores were collected to estimate spatial variability of the sediment flora.All lakes were acidic (pH 4.59 to 5.80), highly colored and poorly buffered. Aluminum and magnesium concentrations reached 494 and 70 µg l-1, respectively. The pH of the lakes appears to be declining, as indicated by a comparison of our results with those from a survey done in 1970. An empirical chemical model based on the alkalinity/sulfate ratio and the regression of pH on calcium also indicated that these lakes may be undergoing acidification.Analyses of the diatom flora of the surficial sediments showed strong dominance of 6 species that cooccurred with a large number of rare species (in all, 229 taxa were found). Variability among samples within a lake was as high as among lakes. Calculation of Nygaard's alpha index for each sample and the regression of its log-transformed value on surface pH yielded a relationship that was significantly from other published models. The regression model was applied to a down-core analysis of the diatom flora of the sediments of two lakes. Although the large confidence intervals on pH values predicted by the model obscured any evidence of pH change with sediment depth, there was a significant increase of acidophilous and a decrease of circumneutral species over time, suggesting that a change in the flora, possibly correlated with pH, is taking place.In making comparisons among lakes, the surficial-sediment flora did not provide clear evidence of a relationship with the pH of surface water. Indices computed from the surficial-sediment flora are apparently insensitive to differences in pH over a narrow range, particularly when the lakes being compared are similar chemically. Nygaard's alpha index is shown to be unduly sensitive to outliers. The currently accepted assumption of a progressive linear change in communities may be inadequate for the quantification of acidification processes. Other models, derived from catastrophe theory, may prove more fruitful.  相似文献

The diatom flora and limnology of lakes in the Amery Oasis,East Antarctica   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The diatom flora of three lakes in the ice-free Amery Oasis, East Antarctica, was studied. Two of the lakes are meltwater reservoirs, Terrasovoje Lake (31 m depth) and Radok Lake (362 m depth), while Beaver Lake (>435 m depth) is an epishelf lake. The lakes can be characterized as cold, ultra-oligotrophic and alkaline, displaying moderate (Radok and Terrasovoje lakes) to high (Beaver Lake) conductivities. There was no diatom phytoplankton present in any of the three lakes. While 34 benthic diatom taxa were identified from modern and Holocene sediments of Terrasovoje and Radok lakes, a 30-cm long sediment core recovered in Beaver Lake was barren. Five species (Luticola muticopsis, Muelleria peraustralis, Pinnularia cymatopleura, Psammothidium metakryophilum, P. stauroneioides) are endemic to the Antarctic region. All identified taxa are photographically documented and brief notes on their taxonomy, biogeography and ecology are provided. The most abundant diatom taxa are Amphora veneta, Craticula cf. molesta, Diadesmis spp, M. peraustralis and Stauroneis anceps. More than 190 taxa, belonging to 33 genera, were observed on mosses collected on Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Antarctica. Six assemblages could be identified. Habitat type and moisture content of the samples appeared to be the major factors in separating the communities. It was clear that diatom communities growing on mosses found in rivers and brooks are different from assemblages on rocks and in stagnant pools. The Diadesmis contenta assemblage was bound to dry mosses growing on rocks whereas the Eunotia paludosa var. paludosa community preferred acid stagnant pools, situated in the larger valleys. The other four assemblages are typical for circumneutral waterbodies, with the Fragilaria maillardii and the Fragilaria vaucheriae-Fragilaria germainii assemblages found in running water and the Fragilaria pinnata var. pinnata and the Achnanthes confusa-Achnanthes aueri assemblages in more stagnant water. Weighted averaging and calibration were used to develop a statistical transfer function to infer the moisture content of moss samples from the diatom assemblages. Accepted: 29 March 1999  相似文献

Soil diatom communities from Ile de la Possession (Crozet,sub-Antarctica)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An ecological study of soil diatoms on Ile de la Possession (Crozet Archipelago, sub-Antarctica) was carried out during the austral summer of 1998/1999. Both diatom and chemistry data were collected. A highly diverse diatom flora of 230 taxa, belonging to 39 genera were identified from 104 samples. Several of them are considered to be new. The most abundant genera were Diadesmis, Achnanthes and Pinnularia. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to classify the samples based on their chemical characteristics. Moisture and nutrients were the main factors separating three groups of samples: dry fellfield soils, soils influenced by marine animals and mesic valley soils. Species assemblages correspond well with this division. Forward Selection with Monte Carlo permutations was used to reduce the number of significant variables. The analysis selected moisture, phosphate and sulphate concentrations. Based on the analysis, the same three groups of the PCA were found. Weighted averaging and calibration were used to develop a statistical transfer function to infer the moisture content of soils from the diatom assemblages.  相似文献

The diversity, ecology and biogeography of diatoms in lakes, seepage areas and streams on the Ulu Peninsula, a large ice-free area in the northern part of James Ross Island (Weddell Sea), were studied. A diverse diatom flora of 123 taxa was observed, dominated by several Nitzschia taxa, Psammothidium papilio, Eolimna jamesrossensis, Fragilaria capucina and Fistulifera saprophila. The results from the similarity and diversity analysis suggest James Ross Island to be biogeographically positioned within the Maritime Antarctic region, yet with some affinities with the flora of Continental Antarctica, as shown by the presence of Luticola gaussii and Achnanthes taylorensis. Based on our data, James Ross Island can thus be located close to the boundary of the two main Antarctic biogeographical regions. Diatom communities present in streams and seepage areas could be clearly distinguished from those in lakes, the latter being much more species rich. Based on the multivariate analysis, conductivity and nutrients were selected as the two main environmental factors determining the diatom composition in the Ulu Peninsula lakes. The revised taxonomy of the Antarctic diatom flora induced the construction of a transfer function for water conductivity in the studied lakes that can be applied in further palaeoecological studies.  相似文献

Diatom assemblages from sediment trap samples collected during ten intervals between October 2003 and October 2005 in Sacrower See (NE Germany) were related to limnological and meteorological data. Sacrower See is a dimictic, 38 m deep, hypertrophic lowland lake (29.5 m a.s.l.). We identified distinct seasonal and interannual changes of diatom assemblages for the studied period. Diatoms showed a typical seasonal succession for temperate, dimictic, and eutrophic lakes. Stephanodiscus parvus, S. hantzschii, S. neoastraea, and S. alpinus had high accumulation rates during winter and spring, whereas species of the genera Stephanodiscus, Fragilaria, and Nitzschia were the predominant diatoms during summer and autumn. In a Canonical Correspondence Analysis, precipitation, air and water temperatures, epilimnetic calcium, pH, and total phosphorus concentrations together explained 70% of the variance of the diatom data. Interannual variability in the diatom assemblages during the two sampled years mainly seems to reflect changes in the total phosphorus concentration and temperature and secondarily the onset of the growing season and of stratification. Limnological gradients of small, oligotrophic, and low conductance lakes in northern New England were defined by principal components analysis; relationships of sedimented diatom species to the gradients were investigated by correlation analysis. Diatom distributions were most strongly related to the gradient of pH and alkalinity and the covarying variables, conductance, Mg, Ca, total Al, and exchangeable Al. Weaker relationships to lake morphology, dissolved organic carbon and water color, altitude and marine aerosol inputs, and the distinctive water chemistry of some New Hampshire lakes were also present. Results for 16 taxa of importance in our studies of lake acidity are given in detail and are compared to results from other regions of eastern North America. Planktonic taxa were absent below pH 5.5, with the exception of the long form of Asterionella ralfsii var. americana Korn. The two forms of this taxon differed ecologically: the long form (>45μm) had an abundance weighted mean (AWM) pH 4.90 and occurred mostly in lakes that were deep relative to transparency; the short form (<45μm)had an AWM pH and occurred on lakes that were shallow relative to transparency. The ecological advantage of a “splitter” approach to diatom taxonomy was demonstrated by examination of other taxa as well, including Tabellaria flocculosa (Roth) Kütz. Summary Samples were collected monthly from the bottom of the littoral of three freshwater dune lakes on the West coast of the Netherlands. Although there was great similarity in the diatom flora of these waters differences were also found. It appeared that Quackjeswater and Breede Water had the greatest number of species in common. The relation between the differences in diatom flora and the differences in the chemical constitution of the water is not clear. It was the first time thatNavicula lagerstedtii andN. toulaae were observed in the Netherlands.  相似文献

We analyzed diatom and water chemistry data collected by The Academy of Natural Sciences from 47 rivers throughout the eastern United States to address several ecological questions. How does the composition of diatom assemblages vary over large regional scales? What are the most important environmental factors affecting assemblage composition and how does their influence vary among regions and with spatial scale? How do distributions and autecological characteristics of individual taxa vary spatially? What are the implications of answers to these questions for use of diatoms as water quality indicators? Data for 186 samples at 116 sites were collected from 1951 to 1991 on moderate- to large-sized rivers ranging from Maine to Texas as part of Academy monitoring and survey programs, most initiated and implemented by Dr. Ruth Patrick. Several sites were highly impaired by point and non-point source pollution. Diatom assemblages grouped into four main categories, based on multivariate analyses. Group membership correlated equally well with intermediate-scale geographic regions and water chemistry: (1) Northeastern US rivers with lower alkalinity and hardness, and pH 6.5–7.8; (2) Primarily dilute coastal plain rivers in the southeastern United States with the lowest average pH (5.5–7.3) of all sites and some with high DOC; (3) Rivers within and west of the Appalachian Mountains, generally having higher pH (>7.5) than those in other regions, but with relatively low chloride concentrations; and (4) Gulf Coast rivers with the highest chloride (>100 mg l?1), hardness (>250 mg l?1), and pH of rivers in all the groups. Hardness, pH, alkalinity, and Cl explained most of the variation among diatom assemblages, based on ordination analysis. Factors related to water quality problems, such as BOD, P, NH4, and turbidity explained much less variability at the eastern US scale, but were more important in the four intermediate-scale regions. Diatom taxa abundance-weighted mean values for water chemistry characteristics varied among the four intermediate-scale regions, often greatly, and in proportion to the average measured values for each region. Design of calibration data sets for development of water quality indicators should account for spatial scale in relation to species dispersal, regional geochemistry and habitat types, and human-influenced water chemistry characteristics.  相似文献

We explored statistical relationships between the composition of littoral diatom assemblages and 21 chemical and physical environmental variables in 69 lakes and 15 river sites in the lowland of northeastern Germany. Canonical correspondence analysis with single treatment and with forward selection of environmental variables was used to detect 11 important ecological variables (dissolved inorganic carbon [DIC], Na + , total phosphorus [TP], dissolved organic carbon [DOC], total nitrogen [TN], pH, oxygen saturation, dissolved iron, SO42 ? , NH4 + , soluble reactive silicium) and maximum water depth or Ca2 + or soluble reactive phosphorus that most independently explain major proportions of the total diatom variance among the habitats. Monte Carlo permutation tests showed that each contributed a significant additional proportion (P < 0.05) of the variance in species composition. Together, these 11 most important environmental variables explained 34% of the total variance in species composition among the sites and captured 73% of the explained variance from the full 21 parameters model. Weighted‐averaging regression and calibration of 304 indicator taxa with tolerance down‐weighting and classic deshrinking was used to develop transfer functions between littoral diatoms and DIC, pH, TP, TN, and Cl ? . The DOC:TP ratio was introduced and a weighted‐averaging model was developed to infer allochthonous DOC effects in freshwater ecosystems. This diatom‐DOC/TP model was significant (P < 0.001) and explained 7.6% of the total diatom variance among the sites, surpassing the inferential power of the diatom‐TP‐transfer function (7.3% explained variance). The root‐mean‐square errors of prediction of the models were estimated by jack‐knifing and were comparable with published data sets from surface sediment diatom samples. The data set of littoral diatoms and environmental variables allows use of the diatom‐environmental transfer functions in biomonitoring and paleolimnological approaches across a broad array of natural water resources (such as floodplains, flushed lakes, estuaries, shallow lakes) in the central European lowland ecoregion.  相似文献

Quantitative ecological monitoring of African lakes is needed to understand growing human pressures on ecosystems. Diatom-based indices are routinely used for this purpose elsewhere in the world, but have not yet been produced for the flora of African freshwater lakes. Here we tested the applicability of the European diatom indices on the biomonitoring system of Lake Hawassa, Ethiopia. Physico-chemical and benthic diatom sampling was done at nine sites with different degrees of human disturbance along the lakeshore area from February to November 2015 and 2016. A percentage disturbance score (PDS) was calculated at each site and categorised from no evident disturbance (0–25%) to high disturbance (75–100%). Based on this criterion and selected physico-chemical parameters, the sampling sites categorized into minimal, moderate and high disturbance. Seventeen diatom indices were calculated using Omnidia software version 5.3. Out of a total of 17 indices that were calculated using the Omnidia software, six were selected as potential metrics. The diatom indices had a high discrimination efficiency and were significantly correlated with most the environmental parameters (r > 0.6; p < 0.05). Among these, the trophic diatom index (TDI) and generic diatom index (IDG) showed the best potential to discriminate the three clustered sites, based on their ecological classification. Accordingly, although robust locally based indices are needed, the TDI and IDG diatom indices could be used in monitoring of water quality in tropical African rift lakes.  相似文献

This study focused on the spring-fed upper reaches of the economically important Great Fish River with the aim of determining if diatoms could be used for biomonitoring in semi-arid conditions in southern Africa. Five sites were monitored monthly from 2010 to 2012. Of the 269 diatom taxa belonging to 51 genera identified, the dominant taxa were mostly those considered to be pollution-tolerant: Amphora pediculus, Craticula buderi, Fragilaria biceps, Nitzschia frustulum, Nitzschia paleacea, Planothidium lanceolatum and Rhopalodia gibba. A number of diatom-based numerical indices were used to infer water quality, including the generic diatom index, the specific pollution sensitivity index, the biological diatom index, and percentage pollution-tolerant valves, which forms part of the UK trophic diatom index. All index scores showed the Great Fish River to be impacted, and showed significant correlations of diatom species abundance with pH, NO3-N, electrical conductivity, NH4-N and CaCO3. Analysis revealed EC and NO3-N as the main environmental drivers affecting diatom community composition, followed by pH and PO4-P. The percentage of diatom deformities at all sites was high, at 3.5%. Diatom indices showed the river to be impacted by decades of agricultural activity, which was confirmed by chemical water analysis. Thus diatom indices can be used for biomonitoring in semi-arid areas.  相似文献

Arctic oases are regions of atypical warmth and relatively high biological production and diversity. They are small in area (<5 km2) and uncommon in occurrence, yet they are relatively well studied due to the abundance of plant and animal life contained within them. A notable exception is the lack of research on freshwater ecosystems within polar oases. Here, we aim to increase our understanding of freshwater diatom ecology in polar oases. Diatoms were identified and enumerated from modern sediments collected in 23 lakes and ponds contained within the Lake Hazen oasis on Ellesmere Island, and compared with diatom assemblages from 29 sites located outside of the oasis across the northern portion of the island. There were significant differences in water chemistry variables between oasis and northern sites, with oasis sites having higher conductivity and greater concentrations of nutrients and related variables such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Taxa across all sites were typical of those recorded in Arctic freshwaters, with species from the genera Achnanthes sensu lato, Fragilaria sensu lato, and Nitzschia dominating the assemblages. A correspondence analysis (CA) ordination showed that oasis sites generally plotted separately from the northern sites, although the sites also appear to plot separately based on whether they were lakes or ponds. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) identified specific conductivity, DOC, and SiO2 as explaining significant (< 0.05) and additional amounts of variation in the diatom data set. The most robust diatom‐based inference model was generated for DOC, which will provide useful reconstructions on long‐term changes in paleo‐optics of high Arctic lakes.  相似文献

Abstract

Mediterranean karst springs are affected by strong climatic seasonality, with long, dry and hot summers and are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures. In Sardinia (western Mediterranean Sea, Italy), they are largely unexplored and their biocoenoses are mostly unknown. The diatom flora from two substrates (cobbles and macrophytes) in eight springs of different areas of the island was investigated in summer 2016 and winter 2017. A total of 162 diatom taxa (58 genera) were found of which 27 (17 genera) only on cobbles and 26 (18 genera) only on macrophytes. The most abundant species from both substrates were Achnanthidium minutissimum, Amphora indistincta, Amphora pediculus, Cocconeis euglypta, Planothidium frequentissimum and P. lanceolatum. Overall, 67 taxa (40 genera) were recorded in single sites and some of these taxa showed high affinity with specific environmental conditions. Hydrological stability (water flow permanence), discharge and nutrients were the main environmental factors influencing diatom assemblages. Our results suggest that diatoms can reflect important local factors related to the vulnerability of these spring ecosystems and underline the importance of their preservation both for biodiversity and water quality maintenance.  相似文献

Summary In conclusion, the present study reveals that the algal flora and particularly the diatoms are richly developed in the type of habitat hitherto investigated under conditions broadly stated in the introduction. This observation is supported by the fact that as many as 101 diatoms representing 20 of the commonly available fresh water genera, are recorded in two small samples from such a small body of water, besides several unicellular, colonial and filamentous forms of algae.Of the diatom content noted here, analysis shows that a large bulk of them was fairly represented and the genera Nitschia and Navicula appeared prominent. Further, 6 diatoms which make here new records for India, extend their further range of geographical distribution and three new species are added to science. The qualitative frequency data is also being expressed in the introduction.  相似文献

Eleven representatives of diatom algae of the class Centrophyceae from the genera Aulacoseira (1), Conticribra (1), Cyclotella (5), Discostella (1), Stephanodiscus (2), and Thallasiosira (1) have been found in the phytoplankton of 5 volcanic lakes (Bakening volcano, Kamchatka). Stephanodiscus popovskayae, a species new for science, has been discovered in all the lakes, and a species new for the flora of Russia, Cyclotella gordonensis, has been found only in three lakes. The closest similarity in the composition of centric diatoms has been revealed between the lakes of a single water system: Lake Medvezh’e and Lake Verkhneavachinskoe.  相似文献

The study of phytoplankton from rivers and lakes in the southeastern part of the West Siberian Plain and the eastern macrosclope of the Polar Ural by scanning electron microscopy has revealed 25 taxa of Bacillariophyta from the class Centrophyceae (seven Aulacoseira, one Cyclostephanos, four Cyclotella, two Discostella, one Melosira, one Puncticulata, seven Stephanodiscus, and two Thalassiosira), including new species for the flora of the investigated bodies of water. The revision of the species composition of Centrophyceae in bodies of water and watercourses in the southeast part of the West Siberian Plain has allowed more exact identifying the taxonomic spectrum of this class. At present, the list includes 55 species, varieties and forms. During first studies conducted in rivers and lakes of the Lyapin River basin (Polar Ural) 16 species of centric diatoms that belong to the genera Aulacoseira, Cyclostephanos, Cyclotella, Discostella, Puncticulata, and Stephanodiscus have been recorded.  相似文献

In rivers, lakes, and streams located in the region of the northern slope of the Polar Ural, 15 species of centric diatoms belonging to genera Aulacoseira, Cyclotella, Discostella, Melosira, and Stephanodiscus have been recorded. The species Cyclotella tripartita, Stephanodiscus hantzschii, S. minutulus, Aulacoseira tenella, Cyclotella arctica, C. ocellata, Stephanodiscus alpinus, and S. cf. niagarae, which are new for the flora of the region, have been found.
