An experimental system incorporating a computerized micro-impedance unit has been used to make direct measurements of the activity of copepod cephalic appendages. As the appendages are used to both propel the copepod through water and handle particles, it follows that appendage activity reflects feeding behaviour. To investigate the sensory feeding behaviour of copepods, their activity was recorded with food stimuli varying in size and chemical composition. Sample impedance traces are given for the appendage movements of Temora longicornis in the presence of: 1 — filtered seawater; 2 — beads; 3 — phytoplankton cells; 4 — dissolved free amino acids. The normal appendage movements shown in filtered seawater were modified when copepods were offered particles and dissolved chemicals. Results show that chemical and mechanical stimuli are responsible for the recognition and selection of food. Impedance traces distinguish between behavioural responses such as: antennule flicks, leg kicks, combing, handling and rejection of particles. Spectral analyses of traces have demonstrated that differences in beat pattern are significant.Paper presentation, at the Third International Conference on Copepoda. Fragrances, male display and mating behaviour of Euglossa hemichlora: a flight cage experiment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. Male euglossine bees (Apidae: Euglossini) collect volatile substances (fragrances) from floral and nonfloral sources and store them in hair‐filled cavities in their hind tibiae. Over time, males accumulate large quantities of complex and species‐specific blends of fragrances. Various hypotheses have been put forward to explain this behaviour, including the idea that fragrance stores reflect the genetic quality of individual males and have evolved through sexual selection and female choice. Clear support of this hypothesis is lacking, largely because male–female interactions are both rare and difficult to observe in nature. Here, we report a flight cage experiment performed in Panama that permitted mating between virgin females (raised from brood cells) and males captured in the forest at fragrance baits. In the cage, eight individually marked males defended small territories around vertical perch sites and showed a characteristic display, which included a previously unreported ‘leg‐crossing’ movement, possibly related to fragrance release. A total of six copulations and three copulatory attempts by Euglossa hemichlora were observed and partly recorded on video. The copulations, all of which were initiated by the female landing on a male perch, were short (4–10 s) and showed no signs of the transfer of chemical substances from male to female. In some cases, the male hovered directly over the female before descending to mount her, possibly facilitating fragrance evaluation by the female. After the experiment, the contents of the males' hind legs were analysed by gas chromatography‐mass spectroscopy, which detected complex mixtures of terpenoids and aromatics (totalling 70 different compounds) dominated by hexahydrofarnesyl acetone, farnesene epoxide, ocimene and p‐dimethoxy benzene. Individual total amounts of fragrances were neither related to display activity or perch occupancy by given males, nor to the frequency of matings achieved. Display activity was the only positive correlate of mating frequency. Generally, individuals had uniformly large amounts of stored fragrances in comparison to a previous study of three other species of Panamanian Euglossa. 相似文献

Two different host-vector expression systems, designed for cell surface display of heterologous receptors on Staphylococcus xylosus and Staphylococcus carnosus, respectively, were compared for the surface display of four variants of a 101 amino acid region derived from the G glycoprotein of human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Surface localization of the different chimeric receptors was evaluated by a colorimetric assay and by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. It was concluded that the S. carnosus system was better both in the ability to translocate inefficiently secreted peptides and in the number of exposed hybrid receptors. The potential use of the described staphylococci as live bacterial vaccine vehicles or alternatives to filamentous phages for surface display of protein libraries is discussed. 相似文献

Tiger moths and the threat of bats: decision-making based on the activity of a single sensory neuron
John M. Ratcliffe James H. Fullard Benjamin J. Arthur Ronald R. Hoy 《Biology letters》2009,5(3):368-371
Echolocating bats and eared moths are a model system of predator–prey interaction within an almost exclusively auditory world. Through selective pressures from aerial-hawking bats, noctuoid moths have evolved simple ears that contain one to two auditory neurons and function to detect bat echolocation calls and initiate defensive flight behaviours. Among these moths, some chemically defended and mimetic tiger moths also produce ultrasonic clicks in response to bat echolocation calls; these defensive signals are effective warning signals and may interfere with bats'' ability to process echoic information. Here, we demonstrate that the activity of a single auditory neuron (the A1 cell) provides sufficient information for the toxic dogbane tiger moth, Cycnia tenera, to decide when to initiate defensive sound production in the face of bats. Thus, despite previous suggestions to the contrary, these moths'' only other auditory neuron, the less sensitive A2 cell, is not necessary for initiating sound production. However, we found a positive linear relationship between combined A1 and A2 activity and the number of clicks the dogbane tiger moth produces. 相似文献

A sex-ratio distortion factor was found at high frequency in D. simulans strains from Seychelles and New Caledonia. This factor is poorly or not expressed within those strains which are resistant to it. Its presence was detected by crossing females from New Caledonia or the Seychelles with males from a different geographic origin. Most of the F1 males obtained produced an excess of females (up to 99%) in their progeny. The two strains are infected with Wolbachia, but these micro-organisms are not involved in the sex-ratio distortion. The sex-ratio factor is shown to be an X-linked meiotic driver; nuclear resistance factor(s) act by suppressing the drive. It is likely that the same X-located driver invaded the two populations, which subsequently developed resistance factor(s) against it. 相似文献

In many vernal pools, visibility is very poor because of the turbidity from suspended clay particles. For predatory species like Branchinecta gigas, these conditions can be detrimental to successful prey capture. In vernal lakes in central California, B. gigashave developed specialized hunting modes to capture anostracan prey in pools of low visibility. The position of their body, the kinematics of their locomotion, and their reduced eye size suggested the possibility of novel sensory structures on their antennae and/or their cercopods designed to enhance their prey capture abilities. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, we investigated the presence and design of sensory setae on the antennae and cercopods of B. gigas. On both males and females, there are dense patches of sensilla along the length of the antennae. They are oriented ventrally and slightly anteriorly. These antennal setae appear to be chemosensory in structure and position; they resemble antennal setae of other branchiopods. However, the setae of the cercopods are unusual in their morphology and location on the appendage. The cercopods, which are bent over the head in the hunting position, have a linear arrangement of specialized setae on their ventral side. They are jointed setae with an anterior crown of protective spines. The setal joint only permits limited abduction either toward the head in the hunting position or ventrally when swimming. These setae appear to be mechanosensory in function and may be adaptations to a raptorial lifestyle. They correlate well with the behavioral components of hunting in B. gigasand their complex prey capture mechanism. 相似文献

The evolution of cryptic spider silk: a behavioral test 总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1
Phylogenetic patterns of change in spider silk coloration provideinsight into the selective pressures directing evolution ofsilks. Trends toward evolution of silks with low reflectanceof ultraviolet (UV) light suggest that reduced UV reflectancemay be an adaptation to reduce visibility of webs to insectprey. However, a test of the visibility of primitive and derivedspider silks is lacking. Several genera of orb-weaving spidersinclude conspicuous designs of silk, called "stabilimenta,"at the center of their webs. Due to their large size, stabilimentapresent signals that insects can use to avoid webs. Unlikeother silks in the orb web, which reflect little UV light, evolutionarily derived stabilimentum silk retains a bright UV
reflectance. But, unlike primitive silks, stabilimentum silkalso reflects large amounts of blue and green light. We comparedthe visibility of primitive tarantula silks and derived stabilimentumsilks to insects by using the ability of honey bees to learnto forage at targets of spider silk. We found that the uniquespectral properties of stabilimentum silk render it crypticto insects and that primitive silks are more visible to bees. Our findings support a hypothesis that the coloration of stabilimentumsilk is an adaptation to reduce the ability of insects to avoidwebs and that ancient biases in the color vision of insectshave acted upon the evolution of spider silk coloration throughsensory drive. But our findings question the emphasis on UVreflectance alone for visibility of spider silks to insects. 相似文献

In order to identify basic aspects in the process of tactile perception, we trained rats and humans in similar object localization tasks and compared the strategies used by the two species. We found that rats integrated temporally related sensory inputs ('temporal inputs') from early whisk cycles with spatially related inputs ('spatial inputs') to align their whiskers with the objects; their perceptual reports appeared to be based primarily on this spatial alignment. In a similar manner, human subjects also integrated temporal and spatial inputs, but relied mainly on temporal inputs for object localization. These results suggest that during tactile object localization, an iterative motor-sensory process gradually converges on a stable percept of object location in both species. 相似文献

Dynamic sexual signals often show a diel rhythm and may vary substantially with time of day. Diel and short-term fluctuations in such sexual signals pose a puzzle for condition capture models of mate choice, which assume a female preference for male traits that reliably reflect a male's quality. Here we experimentally manipulated the food supply of individual male field crickets Gryllus campestris in their natural habitat in two consecutive seasons to determine (i) the effect of male nutritional condition on the fine-scaled variation of diel investment in acoustic signalling and (ii) the temporal association between the diel variation in male signalling and female mate-searching behaviour. Overall food-supplemented males signalled more often, but the effect was only visible during the daytime. In the evening and the night, signal output was still high but the time spent signalling was unrelated to a male's nutritional condition. Females' mate-searching behaviour also showed a diel rhythm with peak activity during the afternoon, when differences among calling males were highest, and where signal output reliably reflects male quality. These findings suggest that males differing in nutritional condition may optimize their investment in signalling in relation to time of day as to maximize mating success. 相似文献

A wide variety of pollutants (for example, heavy metals, organic compounds such as pesticides, hydrocarbons and oil dispersants, radioactive materials, excessive nutrients, acids, litter, silt, temperature and explosions) can influence the function of sense organs, and so influence behaviour by reducing or changing sensory information reaching the brain. Experiments show that so-called sublethal effects of pollutants occur at much lower concentration thresholds than lethal effects, yet subethal effects may well be lethal in the long term. Although a considerable amount of work has been done on marine invertebrates, practically all the work on fish is on freshwater species. 相似文献

This article introduces recent advances in the machine analysis of facial expressions. It describes the problem space, surveys the problem domain and examines the state of the art. Two recent research topics are discussed with particular attention: analysis of facial dynamics and analysis of naturalistic (spontaneously displayed) facial behaviour. Scientific and engineering challenges in the field in general, and in these specific subproblem areas in particular, are discussed and recommendations for accomplishing a better facial expression measurement technology are outlined. 相似文献

Factors related to aggressive nest protection behaviour: a comparative study of Holarctic Waders 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Data on 12 factors presumed to influence the distribution of aggressive nest defence in 111 species of waders (incubation-sharing by the parents, number of parents present near the nest, incubation time, nest habitat, breeding latitude, body mass, wing loading, wing structure, detectability on the nest, predator regime, coloniality and alternative prey) were collected from literature and field researchers. Body mass and number of parents present on the nest territory (within response range when avian predators appear) explain 50% of the variation in aggressive defence behaviour. The results support the notion that ecological conditions like predation pressure are important in shaping wader parental care systems, with implications for mating systems. Altogether, the investigated factors explain around 70% of the variation in the samples. Future research on the level of individuals is suggested in order to explain the remaining variation. 相似文献

Variation in predation risk and vole feeding behaviour: a field test of the risk allocation hypothesis 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Many prey animals experience temporal variation in the risk of predation and therefore face the problem of allocating their time between antipredator efforts and other activities like feeding and breeding. We investigated time allocation of prey animals that balanced predation risk and feeding opportunities. The predation risk allocation hypothesis predicts that animals should forage more in low- than in high-risk situations and that this difference should increase with an increasing attack ratio (i.e. difference between low- and high-risk situations) and proportion of time spent at high risk. To test these predictions we conducted a field test using bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) as a prey and the least weasel (Mustela nivalis nivalis) as a predator. The temporal pattern and intensity of predation risk were manipulated in large outdoor enclosures and the foraging effort and patch use of voles were measured by recording giving-up densities. We did not observe any variation in feeding effort due to changes in the level of risk or the proportion of time spent under high-risk conditions. The only significant effect was found when the attack ratio was altered: the foraging effort of voles was higher in the treatment with a low attack ratio than in the treatment with a high attack ratio. Thus the results did not support the predation risk allocation hypothesis and we question the applicability of the hypothesis to our study system. We argue that the deviation between the observed pattern of feeding behaviour of bank voles and that predicted by the predation risk allocation hypothesis was mostly due to the inability of voles to accurately assess the changes in the level of risk. However, we also emphasise the difficulties of testing hypotheses under outdoor conditions and with mammals capable of flexible behavioural patterns. 相似文献

To study the relationship between the individual and social thermoregulatory behaviour, we used honeybee workers and American cockroaches. Single insects or groups of 10-20 individuals were placed in a temperature gradient chamber, and their thermal preference was recorded for 48 h under natural summer photoperiod. Single bees showed diurnal changes in selected ambient temperature, which culminated at 14:00 reaching 34+/-2 degrees C, and then slowly decreased, reaching a nocturnal minimum of 28+/-2 degrees C at 04:00. In contrast, the zenith of temperature selected by groups of bees (31+/-1 degrees C) was reached at 04:00 and the nadir (29+/-2 degrees C) was recorded at 14:00. Groups of bees clustered together during the night time, and dispersed during intense day time activity. Such changes were absent in groups of cockroaches. Cockroaches selected an ambient temperature of 30+/-1 degrees C both during day and night. In conclusion, there is a striking analogy in the diurnal thermal behaviour between a colony of bees and mammals. During their nychthemeral rest phase, both of them select higher temperatures than during the activity phase and, simultaneously, they reduce their overall surface area of heat loss to conserve metabolic heat. Therefore, the colony behaves as a homeothermic superorganism. In contrast, a single bee, isolated from the colony, utilizes a heterothermic strategy to save energy for a morning warm up. 相似文献

Abstract. The aim of this study was to characterize the vibratory signals produced by the parasitoid Sympiesis sericeicornis Nees (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) while foraging on apple leaves infested by one of its hosts, the spotted tentiform leafminer Phyllonorycter malella (Ger.) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae). This leafminer changes its behaviour as a function of the parasitoid's behaviour to escape parasitization. We propose that the leafminer uses vibrations triggered by the parasitoid to detect the presence of its enemy. We measured vibrations produced by a foraging parasitoid on a mine with a laser vibrometer.By recording concurrently the behaviour of the parasitoid on video, vibrations could be assigned to particular behaviours.Subsequently, vibrations were characterized by their dominant frequencies and intensities. The behaviours Landing and Take-off both produced strong impact-like vibrations characterized by an initial irregular phase during which frequencies up to 25 kHz occurred followed by a slow decaying regular phase.Vibrations elicited by Moving, Standing and Probing showed no clear temporal pattern.During Probing , dominant frequencies of up to 5.6 kHz were observed frequently at intensities well above the background noise (>10 dB).During Moving and Standing , vibrations were more scarce and of lower frequencies and intensities.Due to their impact-like nature, vibrations produced by Landing and Take-off are probably not specific to the parasitoid.Vibrations produced by Moving and Standing are difficult to detect and not reliable because of their non-specificity.Therefore, only Probing provides a reliable and detectable source of information for the host. The vibrations elicited during Probing could account for the evasive behaviour that is observed in this and other leafminers. 相似文献
