The main publications on Cretaceous Bivalves of Alcide d’Orbigny are the Paléontologie française – Terrains crétacés. III. Lamellibranches (1843–1847) and the Prodrome de stratigraphie universelle, vol. II (1850). The importance and influence of these publications for today’s taxonomic palaeontology are discussed. It is shown that the Paléontologie française continues to be one of the major 19th-century papers but that the Prodrome is only rarely referred to.  相似文献

Seeds and fruits of Early Cretaceous (Barremian-Aptian) angiosperms from the Famalic?o locality in Portugal were analyzed to establish seed and fruit size (volume) distributions and to infer the proportion of animal-dispersed fruits. On the basis of a sample of 106 angiosperm fruit and seed taxa, the average seed size was 0.78 mm3 (range 0.02-6.86 mm3), whereas the average fruit size was 2.06 mm3 (range 0.12-8.34 mm3). Variation in seed size among taxa is smaller than in modern plant communities, but within-taxon variation is similar to that known for extant plants. No significant difference in the size of "fleshy" versus other fruits was observed. The proportion of fleshy fruits was 24.5%. This high figure was surprising and indicates that the significance of animal dispersal during an early stage in angiosperm evolution has been underestimated. We suggest that reptiles and multituberculates, and perhaps other mammals and birds as well, were the likely seed dispersers and that the early angiosperms from Famalic?o probably were herbs or small shrubs that inhabited a semiopen coniferous woodland.  相似文献

Many hypotheses have been advanced to explain the K/Pg extinctions, yet none closely examines the likely interactions between dinosaurs and contemporary taxa within their communities. The diversity of predators of dinosaur nests and hatchlings increased toward the end of the Cretaceous. In addition to large snakes having been found fossilized in the act of foraging in dinosaur nests, mammals and birds had also evolved new forms potentially capable of exploiting this resource. The constraints on mammal size and niche diversity lessened prior to the K/Pg boundary. Using comparisons of predator/prey size ratios between extant species and known fossils, we demonstrate that mammalian and avian clades had members large enough to prey on dinosaur eggs and hatchlings. We argue that the reproductive strategy of obligatory nest defense was likely practiced by most non-avian dinosaur species. This strategy was highly susceptible to the increasing numbers of mammalian, avian, and reptilian predators, which rendered this strategy obsolete. Continued selection against large oviparous species in the Cenozoic has limited this life-history strategy to habitats that provide concealment – primarily grasslands, a habitat that did not exist until the Miocene. We urge the evaluation of multiple, perhaps synergistic, hypotheses when considering extinction events of this magnitude.  相似文献

Dinosaur track assemblages from the Houcheng Formation in the small continental Shangyi Basin of northern Hebei Province, China bridge a gap in the record of vertebrates from this unit and enrich our knowledge of ichnofaunas from the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary. Their stratigraphic position between the Middle Jurassic Yan-Liao Biota and the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Biota gives them a special importance. New discoveries allow a re-assessment of theropod and possible ornithopod tracks that are present with several trackways. Seventy-three footprints were examined and documented. Despite their smaller size, the tridactyl mesaxonic theropod tracks show morphological similarities with the ichnogenus Therangospodus known from the Upper Jurassic deposits of North America, Europe, and Central Asia. The possible ornithopod tracks lack an associated manus imprint, suggesting a bipedal trackmaker. These possible ornithopod tracks from the Houcheng Formation provide evidence for the presence of small basal ornithopods or basal Cerapoda in the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous in this region. The depositional environment was the margin of an extensive shallow lake with fluctuating water levels under seasonally dry climate.  相似文献

The foraminiferal contents of three surface sections [Gebel Tarboul, Wadi Tarfa (WT) and Bir Dakhl (BD) sections] in southern Galala area, North-Eastern Desert, Egypt, have been studied in detail and used in biostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy of the upper Cretaceous–Paleogene successions. Sixty-nine planktonic foraminiferal species belonging to 23 genera have yielded 17 biozones. They are given in ascending order: Globotruncana aegyptiaca Interval Zone (IZ), Gansserina gansseri IZ, Contusotruncana contusa–Racemiguembelina fructicosa IZ, Abathomphalus mayaroensis IZ, P1c, P2, P3, P3a, P3b, P4, P4a, P4b, P4c, P5, E1, E2, E3, E4 and E5. Moreover, local and widespread regional hiatus was detected in the pelagic to hemipelagic sequence during Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary in southern Galala Sub-basin. This hiatus corresponds to the Early Maastrichtian–Early Eocene in Gebel Tarboul, the interval between Late Maastrichtian–Early Paleocene throughout WT sequences and Late Maastrichtian–Late Paleocene in BD section.  相似文献

Although rare, dinosaurs are well preserved in calcareous nodules of the Santana Formation (Early Cretaceous, ?Albian) of the Araripe Basin, in northeastern Brazil. So far, including only a spinosauroid and three coelurosaurs, the dinosaur fauna appears depauperate. High theropod diversity in assemblages where other dinosaurs are rare or absent is not unique to the Santana Formation. It is seen also in several other assemblages, including Solnhofen and the Maevarano Formation of Madagascar. We consider several factors, including the occurrence of intraguild predation, the possibility that small theropods could subsist in marginal environments, and reliance on coastal resources, that may have been responsible for this apparent ecological imbalance. A new coelurosaur from the Santana Formation, here formally named Mirischia asymmetrica, is shown to be distinct from Santanaraptor placidus [Kellner, A.W.A. () “Short note on a new dinosaur (Theropoda, Coelurosauria) from the Santana Formation (Romualdo Member, Albian) northeastern Brazil”, Boletim do Museu Nacional, Nova Serie, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil 49, 1–8]. Other theropods from the Santana Formation are briefly reviewed. Mirischia is a compsognathid, more similar to the European Compsognathus than to the Asian Sinosauropteryx.  相似文献

The 13C/12C ratios of leaves of the conifer morphotype Frenelopsis were measured to decipher the influences of water and salt stress on stomatal density (SD), epidermal cell density (ECD) and stomatal index (SI). Three morphospecies were analyzed: F. ugnaensis from freshwater fluvio-lacustrine deposits (Upper Barremian), F. turolensis and alata from coastal deposits (Lower-Middle Albian and Upper Albian respectively). The cuticle δ13C values show a large variation from ? 28‰ to ? 21‰. Comparison with previously published marine carbonate δ13C records indicate that the difference in cuticle δ13C between the different deposits are mainly due to difference in CO2-plant isotope fractionation rather than to change in isotopic composition of inorganic carbon in the atmosphere and ocean. The less negative δ13C and wide range in δ13C of F. turolensis and alata (? 27.5 to ? 21‰), compared to F. ugnaensis, (? 28 to ? 25‰) are interpreted as a result of salt and/or water stress. The data as a whole yield a good relationship between the 13C/12C ratio and SD (r = 0.67, n = 42, p < 0.001), SI (r = 0.53, n = 41, p < 0.001), hence suggesting that the differences in SD and SI between the three morphospecies are related to freshwater/saline environment. Looking at single morphospecies, the SD of F. ugnaensis decreases with increasing δ13C value (r = ? 0.57, n = 15, p = 0.026) as well as a decrease of SI (r = ? 0.62, n = 15, p = 0.013), possibly reflecting warmer and drier conditions. Average SI of F. alata does not significantly change with δ13C and inferred soil salinity in contrast to SD (p < 0.01).  相似文献

Tethyan microencrusters and microbial crusts, most of them previously unknown in Japanese Mesozoic biotas, are present in the uppermost Jurassic–lowermost Cretaceous Torinosu Limestone distributed in southwestern Japan. They construct reefal facies together with reef-forming metazoans. Bacinella irregularis and Lithocodium aggregatum are quantitatively most important, while subordinate constituents include Thaumatoporella parvovesiculifera, Koskinobullina socialis , Iberopora bodeuri , Girvanella sp. and Tubiphytes morronensis. They are especially common in the shallow-water reefal facies, but appear micritic in outcrops. Microencrusters and microbial crusts can only be recognized in thin sections, and they grow around the reef building metazoans and form bindstone. Each microencruster exhibits some specific spatial distribution associated with its paleoecology. Similarities with the taxonomic composition of the upper Jurassic Tethyan microencruster association imply that the community extended geographically at least to the Tethyan gateway where the Japanese Island Arc was located.  相似文献

In the “Eastern Pontides” (NE Turkey), the intense volcanic activity accompanying carbonate-siliceous sedimentation during the Late Cretaceous period ensured the occurrence of thick volcano-sedimentary sequences. Seventy-one radiolarian species belonging to 26 genera were identified from five stratigraphic sections of the Upper Cretaceous sequences between Trabzon and Giresun areas in NE Turkey. These species were obtained from the lower Turonian–lower Coniacian strata of the Çe?meler Formation, the Coniacian–lower Santonian strata of the Elmal? Dere Formation and the upper Santonian strata of the Ça?layan Formation. Coniacian–Campanian fauna, consisting of planktonic foraminifera Hedbergella, Marginotruncana, Globotruncana, Whiteinella and biserial heterohelicids as well as radiolarians, was recovered from the red pelagic limestones of the Elmal? Dere Formation known as marker horizon.  相似文献

A report on the pterosaurian remains from the Lower Cretaceous of Anoual, Morocco, is presented. The material consists of teeth possibly documenting two groups. One of them cannot be clearly established but might be ornithocheirid, while the most numerous teeth are reminiscent of those of gnathosaurine. This possible attribution might be consistent with a Berriasian age for the calcareous lens containing the microvertebrate assemblages of Anoual.  相似文献

The Cenomanian–Turonian (Upper Cretaceous) Galala and Maghra el Hadida formations of the Southern Galala Plateau in Wadi Araba (northern Eastern Desert, Egypt) represent marine depositional systems developing in response to the early Late Cretaceous transgression at the southern margin of the Neotethyan Ocean in tropical paleolatitudes. A facies analysis (litho-, bio- and microfacies) of these successions shows the presence of 22 facies types (FTs, six are related to the Galala Formation, while the Maghra el Hadida Formation is represented by 16 FTs). The Galala Formation was deposited in a fully marine lagoonal environment developing in response to a latest Middle to early Late Cenomanian transgression. The rich suspension- and deposit-feeding macrobenthos of the Galala Formation indicate meso- to eutrophic (i.e., green water) conditions. The facies types of the uppermost Cenomanian–Turonian Maghra el Hadida Formation suggest deposition on a homoclinal carbonate ramp with sub-environments ranging from deep-subtidal basin to intertidal back-ramp. Major and rapid shifts in depositional environments, related to (relative) sea-level changes, occurred in the mid-Late Cenomanian, the Early–Middle Turonian boundary interval, the middle part of the Middle Turonian and the Middle–Late Turonian boundary interval.  相似文献

“Lo Hueco” (Cuenca, Spain) is an upper Campanian–lower Maastrichtian Fossil-Lagerstätte that has provided more than 8,500 well-preserved macrofossils, including titanosaur sauropod dinosaurs. Although the facies and fossil record point to both fresh and brackish or marine water influences, a detailed study of the sulphate-bearing layers of the site through petrography, fluid inclusions, and isotopes has been undertaken to evaluate the possible marine influence. The two main sulphate units of the “Lo Hueco” site consist chiefly of bimodal micro- to meso- lenticular gypsum crystals that grew displacively in a clayey-carbonate sediment. The well-preserved lenticular gypsum crystals are primary, as demonstrated by the presence of the original twinning and the absence of hydration textures or anhydrite relicts. Primary fluid inclusions of the lenticular gypsum crystals indicate a vadose environment of formation, with salinities between 1,800 and 14,000 ppm, pointing to a brackish but non-marine environment. Furthermore, gypsum exhibits 87Sr/86Sr values between 0.708034 and 0.708120, which are higher than those from marine evaporites of Campanian–Maastrichtian age, indicating a clear influence of fresh water. Gypsum δ 34S VCDT values (18.1 to 19.0 ± 0.5 ‰) and δ 18OVSMOW values (11.0 to 15.2 ± 0.5 ‰), on the other hand, are typical isotopic values recorded in marine evaporites of this age. This apparent contradiction between fluid inclusion and Sr isotopic data is probably the result of some recycling from Upper Cretaceous evaporites. Based on all these observations, the sulphate-bearing layers are interpreted as probably formed in a near-coastal saline mudflat of a playa lake. As a whole, this study highlights the importance of combining different proxies when dealing with evaporites formed in brackish-water environments.  相似文献

The Upper Cenomanian–Lower Turonian litho-stratigraphic units of the Danubian Cretaceous Group of the proximal Bodenwöhrer Senke (Regensburg, Eibrunn and Winzerberg formations, the latter consisting of a lower Reinhausen Member and an upper Knollensand Member), have been investigated with a focus on facies analysis and sequence stratigraphy. Analyses of litho-, bio-, and microfacies resulted in the recognition of 12 predominantly marine facies types for the Eibrunn and Winzerberg formations. Petrographic and paleontological properties as well as gradual transitions in the sections suggest that their depositional environment was a texturally graded, predominantly siliciclastic, storm-dominated shelf. The muddy–siliceous facies types FT 1–3 have been deposited below the storm wave-base in an outer shelf setting. Mid-shelf deposits are represented by fine- to medium-grained, bioturbated, partly glauconitic sandstones (FT 4–6). Coarse-grained, gravelly and/or shell-bearing sandstones (FT 7–10) developed in the inner shelf zone. Highly immature, arkosic coarse-grained sandstones and conglomerates (FT 11 and 12) characterize an incised, high-gradient braided river system. The Winzerberg Formation with its general coarsening- and thickening-upward trend reflects a regressive cycle culminating in a subaerial unconformity associated with a coarse-grained, gravelly unit of marine to fluvial origin known as the “Hornsand” which is demonstrably diachronous. The overlying Altenkreith Member of the Roding Formation signifies the onset of a new transgressive cycle in the early Middle Turonian. The sequence stratigraphic analysis suggests that the deposition of the Upper Cenomanian and Lower Turonian strata of the Bodenwöhrer Senke took place in a single cycle of third-order eustatic sea-level change between the major sequence boundaries SB Ce 5 (mid-Late Cenomanian) and SB Tu 1 (Early–Middle Turonian boundary interval). The southeastern part of the Bodenwöhrer Senke was flooded in the mid-Late Cenomanian (Praeactinocamax plenus transgression) and a second transgressive event occurred in the earliest Turonian. In the central and northwestern parts of the Bodenwöhrer Senke, however, the initial transgression occurred during the earliest Turonian, related to pre-transgression topography. Thus, the Regensburg and Eibrunn formations are increasingly condensed here and cannot be separated anymore. Following an earliest Turonian maximum flooding, the Lower Turonian Winzerberg Formation filled the available accommodation space, explaining its constant thickness of 35–40 m across the Bodenwöhrer Senke and excluding tectonic activity during this interval. Rapid sea-level fall at SB Tu 1 terminated this depositional sequence. This study shows that Late Cenomanian–Early Turonian deposition in the Bodenwöhrer Senke was governed by eustatic sea-level changes.  相似文献

The Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous Tuchengzi Formation is widespread in North China. Its clastic deposits indicate a tropical, dry, and hot paleoclimate, different from the subtropical, humid, and seasonal climate in the early Middle Jurassic. The sudden environmental change from the Middle to Late Jurassic resulted in a rapid disappearance of the Yanliao/Daohugou Biota, with more than 90% of the species of the Yanliao/Daohugou Biota dying out and replaced by the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota. Eolian sandstones with large-scale cross-bedding occur within the uppermost part of the Tuchengzi Formation in North China. The sandstones are stratigraphically higher than the tuff previously dated as 139 Ma. We obtained two SHRIMP zircon U/Pb ages from the tuff beds. One sample was collected from the tuff in the basal Tuchengzi Formation in northern Hebei and the other from the tuff intercalated in the eolian cross-bedded sandstones in the uppermost Tuchengzi Formation in western Liaoning. Our results show that 154 Ma is the oldest age constraint for the Tuchengzi Formation and 137 Ma is the youngest age estimate of the formation, providing an age constraint for the transition from the Yanliao Biota to the Jehol Biota.  相似文献

Earth system climate sensitivity (ESS) is the long‐term (>103 year) response of global surface temperature to doubled CO2 that integrates fast and slow climate feedbacks. ESS has energy policy implications because global temperatures are not expected to decline appreciably for at least 103 year, even if anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions drop to zero. We report provisional ESS estimates of 3 °C or higher for some of the Cretaceous and Cenozoic based on paleo‐reconstructions of CO2 and temperature. These estimates are generally higher than climate sensitivities simulated from global climate models for the same ancient periods (approximately 3 °C). Climate models probably do not capture the full suite of positive climate feedbacks that amplify global temperatures during some globally warm periods, as well as other characteristic features of warm climates such as low meridional temperature gradients. These absent feedbacks may be related to clouds, trace greenhouse gases (GHGs), seasonal snow cover, and/or vegetation, especially in polar regions. Better characterization and quantification of these feedbacks is a priority given the current accumulation of atmospheric GHGs.  相似文献

Paleostratigraphic estimates of divergence time for nine independent cladogenic events within Mammalia, ranging from 14 to 130 million years, were regressed against Tamura–Nei-corrected 12S rRNA transversions. Relative rate-adjusted distances were also regressed against paleostratigraphic divergence times. The resulting equations were used to estimate interordinal divergence times within Eutheria and Metatheria for a data set that includes representatives of all orders in each infraclass. Without the adjustment for rate variation, divergence times range from 34 to 156 million years for placental orders, versus 32 to 86 million years for marsupial orders. With rate adjustments, the range of divergence estimates decreases to 53 to 133 million years for placentals versus 40 to 79 million years for marsupials. The effect of rate adjustments is most noticeable for carnivores and perissodactyls, where rates are slow, and proboscideans, where rates are fast. In agreement with studies based on nuclear genes, both unadjusted and rate-adjusted estimates of sequence divergence indicate that the majority of placental orders originated before the terminal Cretaceous extinction. Exceptions include the perissodactyl–carnivore split and cladogenesis among paenungulate orders. Most marsupial orders, in turn, may have originated in the early Tertiary although didelphimorphs, at least, appear to have split from other lineages in the late Cretaceous. Marsupial divergence times based on 12S rRNA data are in good agreement with estimates based on single-copy DNA hybridization and disagree with the suggestion of Hershkovitz (1992) that Dromiciops separated from other marsupials in the Jurassic.  相似文献

Investigation of the Mesozoic seed plant Leptostrobus Heer from the Yangcaogou Formation of the Late Triassic and the Yixian Formation of the Early Cretaceous, Liaoning Province, China, provides new Insight Into Its general morphology and geographical distribution. The materials of L. cancer from the Yixian Formation described herein are later than all the past findings of this species and add to the record of L. cancer during the Early Cretaceous. Based on well-preserved specimens, the specific diagnosis Is slightly emended and the reconstructlon of L. cancer Is perfected. The materials from the Yangcaogou Formation of the Late Triassic are placed in L. spheericus, in addition, we review the history of investigation of the genus Leptostrobus since its establishment in 1876 and discuss the main characteristics of each species.  相似文献

A new partial skeleton of the Cretaceous “symmetrodontan” mammal Zhangheotherium quinquecuspedens from the Yixian Formation of Liaoning, China has shed light on the dental and skeletal features of this taxon. The new fossil is a juvenile individual of late growth stage, preserved with interesting features of the premolar replacement. This fossil also provides new information on the vertebral column, the pelvis, the hindlimb and pes. Zhangheotherium has a typical diphyodont replacement of its premolars that is characterized by an alternating pattern (p1 → p3 → p2). This alternating replacement of premolars is a derived condition shared by Dryolestes, Slaughteria, and some basal eutherians, and differs from the plesiomorphic sequential replacement of anterior postcanines in eutricondontans, in most multituberculates and in stem mammaliaforms. The calcaneus and astragalus in the ankle joint of Zhangheotherium lack superposition. This shows that the trechnotherian clade, of which Zhangheotherium is a basal taxon, has retained the primitive condition of mammaliaforms in which the astragalus is in juxtaposition with the calcaneus. Coupled with recent evidence from the earliest metatherians and eutherians, this suggests that the superposition of astragalus and calcaneus evolved in parallel in metatherians and eutherians.  相似文献
